Use of Fungus Bricks in Construction Sector
This is Tufail Ali Zubedi, Owner of SPMC Consultants, which is one of Pakistan’s leading
environmental consulting firms. We specialize in developing customized environmental
friendly solutions. This is my reaction on reading the synopsis of one of your student Ms.
Urooba Khan.
I feel that Ever since Hazrat Adam came to Earth, man is in a constant struggle to survive
against the natural elements such as rain, storms, hunger cold. One of his best product of his
survival instinct was the creation of shelter. First in the form of caves, then to trenches and
ultimately using natural resources in create his home.
The struggle still continues forprofessionalslike usto createhomes frommaterials available
in our nature. Especially in the present era of shifting and changing climate; we shoulder our
responsibility to shift towards sustainable construction processes that are both economical
and have a reduced ecological footprint.
Construction Sector is having a hugh impact on the climate. Construction sector
contribute 39% of the world’s carbon footprint by consuming alot of energy and emitting
carbon dioxide.
One such effort is the use of organic brick for non-load bearing structural component bound
by roots of Mycelium fungus roots brought to our attention by one of your student Ms.
Urooba Khan. From the information she has shared, it seems that the project is a bankable
project with clear return on investment and environmental benefits.
We wish her and all your students best of luck in developing environmental friendly
technological impacts and look forward to seeing your efforts bloom into flowers and fruits
for our future generations.

Fungi brick has attracted a lot of interest in building and construction. Benefits of using this
material are as follows:
Is biodegradable material
Offer an exciting opportunity to upcycle agricultural waste into a low-cost,
sustainable, and biodegradable material alternative.
Could potentially reduce the use of fossil fuel dependent materials.
Low-density, making them very light compared to other materials used in
construction.
They also have excellent thermal and fire-resistant properties.
They can also be used as an insulation material in buildings and in interior walls.
They can expand under a wide range of environmental conditions and therefore
allows a fast, easy, low-cost and energy material production
