We help lots of different types of clients build connected products but today I am going to specifically talk about buildings. And buildings are a special case because, they already have tons of traditional IoT functionality. e.g. lighting systems that come on based on motion are common, security and alarm systems. Whilst these systems aren’t necessarily internet connected, making them so isn’t actually that much of a leap, the devices are already there.
Wait Yodit, you are an open data startup, what does open data have to do with buildings. Actually a lot. Tracking a sensor type isn’t really intelligence. Intelligence comes when you have lots of variables. Air Quality inside a building is affected by air quality outside a buildings. What we think of ourselves is being able to lower the risk of execution by enabling a commons of data to be available to enable you to create your own products.
And here is the why really, big companies are starting to understand that sick buildings cost them money in that people get drowsy. Operational efficiency of buildings is hugely important from understanding utilisation information, i.e. how many people are regularly using this space. Is the design of our spaces well thought out, now they can use data to design better spaces because it costs them money to have people that aren’t comfortable and it costs them money, especially in big cities. If you are talking about hospitals and places where lots of people come and go, intelligent signs with waiting times, taking into account traffic and bus information to route people around is really important. We are seeing lots of companies experiment with digital concierge services which is really hot desking on steriods. I am come into an office, and I am routed to a free desk but near my team rather than separately, it might also create a micro climate that i like by turning up the heating system up and down for me.
And this is new . We work with a lot of the big companies and others to enable them to create their own products. Some are around green buildings, others around operational efficiency. And it’s getting to a stage where you can take people through a repeatable process of systems design, that is heavily borrowed from the lean startup movement. And we need to get these companies start to think like startups. It means actually getting them to let go of the ways that they traditionally create products, i.e. by committee but much more in an experimental and iterative way.
we held an event recently and asked major buildings and asset holders to come along. And you can quickly see that iot is an integration problem, it’s an intergration issue on many levels, from data, hardware to software and systems. Stitching data sets together from multiple systems from environment to new sensors is the key. The issues are data is hard to access.
and it’s quickly apparent that it’s not a one system or one platform solution! An ecosystem approach is so much better, so that is what we are trying to do. We are trying to find people with a common mindset that bealieve in taking a collaborative approach to soliving problems and looking to solve real problems. From the guys at OpenTRV to ubuntu snappy. That are confident enough in the value they bring to not try to own the whole space,

So a mid talk Now a bit of soul searching? What exactly is IoT really? lBuilding Management Companies have been doing IoT for years from Hvac Systems to lighting to security control modules.
These are nargly protocols with XML goodness that we haven’t seen for years. well established and well embedded. reliability is a huge factor, down times are not optional, you can not tell the canary wharf estate that oh our cloud service is down and your air con is not going to work. but there are no open source libraries to work with them, and have sat and neglected by the mainstream tech community. If you need to interface with them you need to buy propertietary hubs to interface with them. And we are going to change all this soon.
We asked a client if we could hack their building, and they said sure. What is the worst the could happen. You will be surprised to know that there is no emacs mode for BMS systems. but these systems aren’t going anywhere, these are 15-20 yr contracts, they wiill outlast your startup. So we had to find a way to work with them.

every thing sits in silos, good luck mate if you want to your security systems to talk to your lighting controls because omg it’s never going to happen. as an aside, in 2015 nearly 2016 some IoT companies are still trying to restrict their customers access to their own data. If you are doing this you are george bush, what do you think of that black and white. in 2016 if you aren’t making systems that intergrate with others, you are letting your customers down, companies like ours, matts and dara’s will each your lunch money.
