5. MANIPURI
Living place: At present they live in
different places of Sylhet Division, like
Kamalganj, Sreemongal, Kulaura and
Baralekha thanas of Moulvi Bazar
district; Chunarughat thana of Habiganj
district and Chhatak thana of
Sunamganj district.
Population: According to the 1991
population census, there were about
25,000 Manipuris in Bangladesh.
6. Mother-language: The mother-tongue of the
Manipuris belongs to the Kuki-chin group of
the Tibeto-Burman sub-family of the
Mongolian family of languages. It is called
Meithei.
Culture : Manipuri culture has a rich and
colourful tradition where dance and music
play a vital role. Rasa dance is the finest
product of their culture. Festivals of the
Manipuris are accompanied by the
consumption of alcoholic beverages.

8. Working nature: Manipuri men and women
work together in the field. Men clear the
jungles and till the soil, while the women sow
seeds and do the transplanting. They
celebrate seed planting and crop harvesting in
their own colourful way.
9. RAJBANGSHI
Living place :They live mostly in Rangpur,
Dinajpur and Rajshahi districts and a small
number of them in Bogra and Mymensingh.
Population :In 1991, their total population was a
little more than five thousand.
Religion :Rajbangshis have their own religious
rites and rituals . Many are animists, while others
worship nature, including mountains, rivers,
forests and the soil. Their religious festivals are
full of indigenous songs and dances.

11. Main profession :Agriculture is the main
profession of the Rajbangshi. They are also
involved in the fishing industry
Family structure : The father is the head of the
family and only male children inherit the
property of their father after his death as a
result of a strong patriarchal bias.
12. KHASIA
Living place :At present they live in
Bishwamvarpur, Tahirpur and Chhatak in
Sunamganj.
Population :According to the census in 1991,
the total number of Khasias in Bangladesh was
12,300; but the Bangladesh Khasia Society
claims the number to be around 30,000.

14. Village name: They call their villages Punji.
Food habit : They have healthy dieting habits
but they don't eat beef. In wedding feasts they
eat of rice and dry fish followed by alcohol.
15. Family structure: Their social system based on
matriarchy, Khasia girls choose their own
bridegrooms from tribes other than their own.
Men live in their wives' houses and their
offspring are known by their maternal names.
Language:Their language Khasi is the
northernmost Austroasiatic language. The
Khasia language does not have an alphabet.
They are bilingual and can speak Khasia as
well as Bangla.
16. TRIPURA
Living place: Chittagong Hill Tracts, especially
in Ramgarh and Khagrachhari.

17. Religion:
• Mainly Hindus though their beliefs and
religious practices are different from those
of caste Hindus in many aspects.
• They worship the god Shiva and the
goddess Kali along with 14 other gods and
goddesses. They also believe in a number of
evil spirits, incorporeal beings and demons

19. Marriage Culture:
• Follows a custom of arranged marriage which is
traditionally not allowed within one's group.
Before marriage the bridegroom takes up
residence in the bride's home for two years and
becomes a member of her family.
Popular festivals:
• Bwisu (celebrate at the end of the current year
and the beginning of the new year),
• Durga Puja, Navaratri, Vijayadashami, Dol Jatra
(Holi), Pous Sankranti, Ashokashtmi, Diwali
Garia, Ker Ganga and Gajan.
20. MARMA
Living place: Three hill districts of Rangamati,
Bandarban and Khagrachari, coastal districts
of Cox's Bazar and Patuakhali.
Population: 1,57,301(According to the 1991
census).
Dress code: Thami, Angi.

Nuclear family.
Husband is the head of the household, the
wife also has a significant role in the family.
Main occupation: Agriculture is the main
occupation of the Marmas but Jhum
cultivation is their primary agricultural
pursuit. They also supplement their food
requirement by gathering tree leaves, roots,
and tubers from the hill forests.
23. MANDI
Language: The Mandi language is called
Achichik Katha. It does not have any written
alphabet.
Religion: Mandis follow their own religion,
Sangshareq, which has roots in agriculture.

Location: Found in the Mymenshingh
Natrokona and Serpur Division Bangladesh.
Class: Paramarthi and Byayabchadi.
Language: Eastern Indo Aryan Language
closely related to Asame and Bengali.
Religion: Hinduism.
26. Chakma
Living Place : The living place of chakma is
Rangamati , Bandarban and Khagrachari.
Population : About 300,000 chakma people
live in our country.
Village Name : The name of chakma village
is ‘Adam’.
27. Village Head Name : The village head name is
‘Karbari’.
Religion : Chakmas are Buddhists.
Festival : The most important festivals of s
chakma are Bizu, Alphaloni and Buddha
Purnima.
28. Marriage System : In marriage system of chakma ,
bridegroom goes to bride’s house and bride goes to
in-laws house. After finishing the “Chunulang” puja
the marriage ceremony is held.
29. RAKHAIN
Population : About 207,000 Rakhain people
live in our country.
Religion : Majority of Rakhain people are
Buddhists.
Language : Rakhain (formerly Arakanese).

31. Festivals : They observe the spring festival and
the Baisaki, Maghi Purnima, Prabarana
Purnima and Shangrain (greatest).
Religion Ceremony : The birth anniversary of
Gautam Buddha is one of their major religious
ceremonies.
32. SANTAL
Living Place: Santals are largely seen in the northern
districts of Dinajpur, Naogaon, Thakurgaon, Panchagar,
etc.
Festival: Nobanno.
Characteristics: By nature, they are very peace loving,
honest, industrious and trustworthy people.
33. MURONG
Living place: Murongs live in Lama, Ruma,
Alikadam and Thanchi upazilas near Chimbuk
Mountain of Bandarban district. Chittagong
Hill Tracts.
Population: About 22000.
Profession: The main profession of the
Murongs is jhum cultivation and lumbering
wood from the jungle.
34. Religion: Most Murongs are Buddhists and some are
Christian converts.
Culture: Murongs love songs and dances. They use
homemade musical instruments, which are made of
bamboo. The flute is the dominant instrument.
