In 2020, the education and working world transformed a decade.
The signs
were already
there, but
we would
not have
seen them
until at least
2030.
In education, we still haven’t adjusted to
Smartphones existing.
Now that this world has opened, we can’t go back.
We must move into the new reality.
We can’t pretend that attending lecture IN PERSON is the only “real” option.
Professors can’t pretend that there’s NO WAY to “make up” a missed lecture.
We can’t pretend that there is NO WAY to attend class from home.
Students can’t pretend that they have NO WAY to do groupwork if they can’t meet in person.
Faculty can’t pretend there’s NO WAY to teach if they are out of town.
We can’t pretend that the ONLY options are Online, F2F, and Hybrid.
In education, everyone now understands how hard it is to teach online.
In the world, ONLINE learning has taken a huge reputation hit.
We can’t ignore the fact that some of our faculty have NO pedagogical training.
Parents and students are questioning whether the CLASSES are worth the cost.
The world has discovered that the SOCIAL component of college has some serious gravitas for young people.
Millions of people have lost jobs that might NOT be coming back.
Some jobs are being DISPLACED by our newfound discovery of existing technology.
Technology like Artificial Intelligence continues to RACE ahead.

So what does a “nimble snail” actually look like?
1. People should be
able to attend
college for one year
and be able to
upgrade their job.
Ask Students: What skills will help you move
up in your job or move to a different job?
2. Revisit and re-
emphasize the
Associates Degree.
With an Associates Degree, a student can leave
academia for a few years and easily come back.
An Associate’s
Degree is more easily
transferable ...
to another institution
or another discipline.
3. Be prepared to
teach upgraded
skills when AI
replaces workers.
Projected Job Disruptions due to AI
Studies at Oxford: 47% of American jobs are at high risk of automation, up to 20
million manufacturing jobs worldwide will be lost to robots by 2030
McKinsey Global Institute: Between 40 million and 160 million women worldwide
may need to transition between occupations by 2030
WEF: automation will displace 75 million jobs but generate 133 million new ones
worldwide by 2022 (prediction in 2018)
Forrester predicts job losses of 29% by 2030 with only 13% job creation to
compensate

  • 2. In 2020, the education and working world transformed a decade.
  • 3. The signs were already there, but we would not have seen them until at least 2030.
  • 4. In education, we still haven’t adjusted to Smartphones existing.
  • 5. Now that this world has opened, we can’t go back. We must move into the new reality.
  • 6. We can’t pretend that attending lecture IN PERSON is the only “real” option.
  • 7. Professors can’t pretend that there’s NO WAY to “make up” a missed lecture.
  • 8. We can’t pretend that there is NO WAY to attend class from home.
  • 9. Students can’t pretend that they have NO WAY to do groupwork if they can’t meet in person.
  • 10. Faculty can’t pretend there’s NO WAY to teach if they are out of town.
  • 11. We can’t pretend that the ONLY options are Online, F2F, and Hybrid.
  • 12. In education, everyone now understands how hard it is to teach online.
  • 13. In the world, ONLINE learning has taken a huge reputation hit.
  • 14. We can’t ignore the fact that some of our faculty have NO pedagogical training.
  • 15. Parents and students are questioning whether the CLASSES are worth the cost.
  • 16. The world has discovered that the SOCIAL component of college has some serious gravitas for young people.
  • 17. Millions of people have lost jobs that might NOT be coming back.
  • 18. Some jobs are being DISPLACED by our newfound discovery of existing technology.
  • 19. Technology like Artificial Intelligence continues to RACE ahead.
  • 20.   • 26. 1. People should be able to attend college for one year and be able to upgrade their job.

  • 29. Ask Students: What skills will help you move up in your job or move to a different job?
  • 30. 2. Revisit and re- emphasize the Associates Degree.
  • 31. With an Associates Degree, a student can leave academia for a few years and easily come back.
  • 32. An Associate’s Degree is more easily transferable ... to another institution or another discipline.
  • 33. 3. Be prepared to teach upgraded skills when AI replaces workers.
  • 34. Things I’ve learned in the last four years Customer Relationship Management Software Project Management and PM Software Accounting Management Software SaaS accounting Virtual Meeting and Webinar software Software ticket management software Social media management software UI/UX design and management software Contractor management software Customer Service management software How to write a term sheet How to make a pitch deck Software to manage the cap tables for our stock Work with a lawyer to write a patent Determine sales tax nexus in any state we do business in Determine the best cloud server platform for us Figure out GDPR and how it applies to us Documentation management software and processes
  • 39. 4. Rethink depth of knowledge.
  • 41. Strictly deals with the level of information or skill depth, not the ability to perform higher cognitive level activities. EXISTENCE SUPPORTED INDEPENDENT LIFETIME

  • 43. 5. Streamline the existing courses to make space to teach more relevant material at the right depth.
  • 44. Curriculum Drift New skills and fields emerge that need to be learned for a discipline.
  • 45. Curriculum Bloat New knowledge, research, and desires from other schools bloat the curriculum from within.
  • 47. Curriculum needs continual tuning If there is no space to do innovative things, innovative things don’t happen.
  • 48. 6. People want re- training with social accountability. Embrace Remote Learning!
  • 49. Remote learning curriculum must be well-designed. The ”remote” part needs to be active.
  • 51. 7. Get more creative about how you use adjunct faculty.
  • 52. Find a way to “qualify” expertise for hiring adjunct faculty.
  • 53. Faculty of 5, 10, 15, 20+ years have very little relevant experience in business outside of Academia. Almost ALL of your students will go out and work in some kind of business.
  • 54. Map out what new niche classes need teaching and find out where you have staffing needs.
  • 55. 7. Expertise is a moving target. Make the courses themselves more flexible by splitting the credits into fixed and variable.

  • 61. Suppose a student wants to do English Comp with an Entertainment theme?
  • 62. 8. The “NEW” Liberal Arts Education? Stack 3 pods and one specialty year or certificate.
  • 63. For example: Each ”pod” can cross the same set of disciplines. •Science •Communication •Humanities / Culture •Business / Government •Logic / Math / Philosophy

  5. Adults with jobs don’t want to drive to campus for classes, but do like the regularity and accountability of classes with an actual instructor and community.
  6. Who DOES have relevant business experience?
  7. It’s not CAN YOU TEACH IT, but HAVE YOU ACTUALLY DONE IT?
