Boards are responsible for the fiscal health of the nonprofit organizations they serve. Not only must they give, but it is essential that they take part in fund development. Many volunteers are uncomfortable in this role. This session will equip staff with tools to train board members about the fundraising cycle and how they can be involved in different phases based on their comfort levels. It will include tips on face to face solicitations.

- Why should I give? HDM is an iconic gem and a Smithsonian Affiliate that welcomes nearly 200,000 visitors annually to explore the cultural and natural history of the region through immersive exhibitions and programs relating to wildlife, living history, art and more! But I am more interested in supporting causes for youth, why should I give? HDM serves 12,000 students annually through hands-on learning opportunities in the STEM field and beyond. Our education team makes a concerted effort to reach out to Title I schools that have a high percentage of need. We aim to close both the opportunity and achievement gaps through informal learning. We also provide professional development to teachers in a variety of subjects, which has long-term impact on students. I am also interested in human services. Why should I give? You may be surprised to know that HDM has many access initiatives and welcomes approximately 12,000 people free of charge each year. For example, we partner with Neighbor Impact’s HeadStart program to provide low-income pre-school students and their families free year-long memberships and gas cards to overcome transportation cost barriers. We are also part of the NEA’s Blue Star program in which we welcome active duty military and their families free of charge. We additionally host multiple Free Days, Senior Days, deliver free programs through our area libraries, and provide guest passes to local health & human service agencies for their clients. That sounds great, but I am on a fixed income, why should I give? Giving is easy at HDM. For example, you can become a sustainer by giving monthly or quarterly at a level that is comfortable for you. You may also want to consider contributing other assets such as appreciated stock or perhaps even an IRA distribution. There are many ways you can support the Museum’s mission.
