Why have a
Faculty Development Programme ?
Today
T ~ This is an
O ~ Opportunity to
D ~ Do
A ~ A Work, better than
Y ~ Yesterday.
If a society recognises
the central role of education
to sustain its future
democratic destiny …
start improving the
quality and performance
of the Faculty.
It is hoped that this session
will spark and fuel discussion
on the scope for further
improvement and greater commitment.
M. A. D.
In case you are ready to
Make A Difference
Please raise your hands.
I want
4
Volunteers,
Please
Attitudes,
Skills
and
Knowledge – and
much more importantly,
ACTIONS
“we want our teachers
to be highly effective.”
A teacher can be
highly qualified
but still
not very effective.
Change happens,
whether we take action or not.
Resistance to change …
is not a positive thing, particularly,
when change is for the better.
Take an active part.
If you do not,
the change will happen
without you.
The five biggest challenges are:
1. Quality education
2. Lack of Problem oriented education
3. Lack of art education (i.e. we are training head
more as compared to hand and heart)
4. Education is moving away from humanity and
human relations
5. More dependence on machines and computers-
( machines becoming more dearer and
important than life)
The Scenario
Innovative Methodologies
in Teaching
Today,
information and communications technologies (ICTs)
infiltrate classrooms around the world
at an exceedingly rapid pace.
In the wake of this influx,
Teachers face growing challenges
as they teach a very “wired”—
and more and more “wireless”—
generation of students using technology
that is evolving every day.
“Today’s digital students
think of ICT
as something akin to oxygen;
they expect it,
it’s what they breathe and
it’s how they live.”
Are you Ready ?
21st Century Pedagogy
Builds – Technological, Information and
Media Fluencies
Teaches – Contextuality
Is – Inter-disciplinary
Works – Collaboratively
Uses – Project based Learning
Fasters – Problem Solving
Is assessed – Transparently
Develops – Thinking Skills
MIND MAP
to explain concepts in an innovative way.
Make students familiar with Mind Maps,
to help them ~ make notes.
Mind Maps
help the teaching and learning process,
by linking the different aspects,
using only key words and images.
makes it easier ~ to remember and review
because of their visual quality.
~ to link and cross-reference
different elements of the map.
Z TO A APPROACH
This approach attempts to explain
the application part
of a particular concept first,
and then explain the theory, and
then further effects of such applications.
Teachers
firstly must learn
self – learning and then
teach learners
Teach How To Learn
“Learning” is an abstract concept to many.
By helping students understand
the art of learning,
the techniques of learning,
as well as the different learning
styles, they will be empowered by
the process.
Some Observations on
Teaching and Learning Methods
1. The emphasis in most Institutions is on
exam oriented "learning".
2. The prevalent 'direct teaching' method
discourages student curiosity, questioning,
innovation and feedback.
3. Innovation in teaching and learning aimed at
development of creative and original thinking
skills is rare
4. There is very little learning from first principles
(cause-effect learning)
Some Observations on
Teaching and Learning Methods
5. Few teachers relate learning to actual
phenomena in nature (development of
physical intuition)
6. There is very little focus on application of
knowledge and development of relevant
practical skills.
7. There are few incentives and opportunities for
creative, collaborative and hands-on learning.
8. Most teachers display a distinct lack of
imagination and initiative in interpreting and
enriching textbook learning.
Some Observations on
Teaching and Learning Methods
9. The "factory based" approach combined with the
race to secure a graduate degree, has
produced a large number of "graduates"
without effective thinking, application,
teamwork and leadership skills, - with far
reaching consequences
10. The lead-time for training and retraining new
recruits in industry as well as the cost of such
training is increasing.
11. Productivity throughout the economic system is
low
So, with such a
Big Problematic Situation –
What can I do,
as a Single Person ?
Some Observations on
Teaching and Learning Methods
12. Accelerating expectations combined with a lack
of productive opportunity has created a
potentially volatile situation.
13. Cultural enrichment of students, a key
education objective, is not happening
Learning Pedagogy
Conventional Vs. Modern
Pedagogy
is the discipline that deals with
the theory and practice of education.
It is concerned with the
study and practice of how best to teach.
21st Century Learning needs
~ Experience
~ Reflect
~ Connect
~ Create
The use of innovative methods
has the potential
not only to improve education,
but also to empower people,
strengthen governance and
galvanize the effort to achieve
the human development goal for the country.
Two pedagogical ideas
Learner empowerment –
actively involving students in learning
development and processes of ‘co-creation’
Future-facing education –
refocusing learning towards engagement and
change processes that help people to consider
prospects and hopes for the future across the
globe.
Need for updating
Teachers’ Knowledge

Skills for Modern Teachers
~ Organisation
~ Tolerance
~ Social
~ Innovative
~ Commitment
~ Open for Questioning
~ Preparation / Practice
~ Technology Enthusiast
Providing teachers
with an open, flexible learning environment
where inquiries are shared,
interventions devised collaboratively and
reflections based on both self and peer observations,
can lead to the development of
a robust, continuously improving
community of practice.
Knowledge of Faculty
[ Basic Concepts ]
The Health, Strength, Depth and Wealth
lies in the Roots
21st Century Teachers Understand
~ What are digital literary skills
and why they are important
~ How to create and develop
a collaborative learning culture
~ How to make the most of the mobile devices
Students carry with them, anyway
~ The value of creating a
Personal Learning Environment
~ The Learning should be an engaging process
with no boundaries
~ How to use cloud-based services
Shifts noticed ? / Unnoticed ?
~ Teaching Adults – [not children]
~ Student centered – [not Teacher centered]
~ Knowledge Oriented – [Syllabus Oriented]
~ Practice Oriented – [Theory oriented]
Moral Values
[ Teachers and Students ~
and the Gap ]
Need for conducting specially designed
Teacher Induction Programmes, and
Student Induction Programmes,
where emphasis is laid on
Values, Ethics and such other value-oriented
requirements.
"Parents are in a terribly
difficult position today. In so many
families both parents have to work,
and teenagers, particularly, wind up
at home alone.
It's not a big mystery
why many get in trouble."
Involvement of Teachers
[ in taking classes and
in Valuation ]
Let us Discuss
Discipline and Penalty
Is Discipline necessary ?
Student Psychology
[ honestly speaking, not my area ]
The Question is not
Whether I can hear.
The Question is
Whether you are interesting enough.
Speed
Restlessness and
Urgent gratification
Our system provides for Uniformity
~ the brightest and the not so smart are
Expected to Learn at the same speed
Parent’s views:
I want the College,
to ready my children for the future,
to give them real options for
what follows after graduation.
I want the College to help my children
grow up to be
happy, prosperous, and
decent citizens.”

~ Trust and Accountability
Finding Solutions to the Problems:
As the problems facing teachers today
are many and varied,
so are the solutions.
Just as there is no one problem,
there is no one solution.
Students Learn Differently
There Are Seven Learning Styles
Visual: Using sight
Auditory: Using songs or rhythms
Verbal: Speaking out loud the information
Kinesthetic: Using touch and taste
to explore the information
Logical: A more mathematical approach
to concepts
Interpersonal: Learning in groups
Intrapersonal: Learning alone
Let Them Teach –
to each other and to the class
One of the most effective methods
for absorbing knowledge is
to teach the knowledge back to another.
Provide students with ample opportunity
to give lectures, presentations.
Create Hunger And Curiosity
When students are interested in a subject,
their ability to learn greatly increases.
They will have more focus,
tenacity,
initiative,
engagement, and
investment in the material.
Our job as teachers is to
take students to the edge of
their comfort zone and invite
them to step out.
Teach students about the
Learning Pit.
Often, when students
start a new project they seem to
be clear of the task and have a
positive outlook towards the
completion.
However somewhere
along the learning journey,
they get stuck, unsure, confused
and the work gets hard.
These are signals to suggest learning is
about to occur!
At this point the key is to teach students
the strategies to get themselves out of ‘The Pit.”
This may include: persisting, thinking flexibly, using
past knowledge, using your senses, finding humour, asking for
help, working with others and questioning.
These are some of the Thinking Dispositions that are
the rungs of the ladder used to climb out of ‘The Pit”.
Once out of the pit and the project is completed, it
important to take time to reflect on the journey and the next
steps.
STUDENTS GET BORED EASILY
Students today are exposed to all forms of
media, thanks to smartphone and social
media - designed to be highly engaging and
addictive.
When children are exposed to such an
interactive environment at home, they get
easily bored and distracted if the lesson in
class, as it is usually not engaging or
interactive enough. Gone are the days when
teachers could teach a lesson using a text
book.
STUDENTS IN THE SAME CLASS
AT DIFFERENT ACADEMIC LEVELS
A teacher is faced with a situation
where the academic levels vary for many
students.
This is a major challenge that results in more
attention to students lagging behind and
complaints from students,
who find class lessons “too easy”,
leading to inattention, and may be indiscipline.
The five biggest challenges are:
1. Quality education
2. Lack of Problem oriented education
3. Lack of art education (i.e. we are training head
more as compared to hand and heart)
4. Education is moving away from humanity and
human relations
5. More dependence on machines and computers.(
machines becoming more dearer and
important than life)
Teaching
Unmotivated and
Under-motivated
College Students:
Problems,
Challenges, and
Considerations
The Truth About Technology
Rewiring students’ brains,
making it tougher to reach and teach them.
“easily distracted generation with short attention
spans”
Digital technologies
“do more to distract students than to help them
academically.”
Can we integrate this technology, with Teaching ? –
a big Challenge
To bridge the ever-widening gap between the
Teacher and Student Community, Managements
must consider having a system of Advisor /
Counsellor / Mentoring. As per a survey, such a
person should have:
1. should be experienced and well trained by the
institution, regarding graduation
requirements, general studies and other
major requirements
2. should act as both a mentor and a friend
3. should be open minded and trustworthy
[ contd ]
Felt need for Advisor / Counsellor / Mentor
4. should be career oriented in their field of
profession
5. should prepare for each advising session and
should review student file prior to meeting
6. should allocate a longer period
7. should get involved with student personal life
as far as a student feels comfortable
8. should assist student to plan for a proper career
objective
9. should be familiar with most programs and
services that institution offers
[ contd ]
Felt need for Advisor / Counsellor / Mentor
10. should be willing to discuss with students out
of offered office hours
11. should be resourceful
12. should assist student to choose classes and to
determine major/minor, if any.
13. should assist student in internship
opportunities / grooming them for placements
14. should inform students about their academic
progress as well as their academic problems
Felt need for Advisor / Counsellor / Mentor
Adult Learners are said to learn best . . .
~ When they want or need to learn
something
~ in a non-threatening environment
~ When the individual learning style
needs are met
~ When their previous experience is
valued and utilized
~ When there are opportunities for them
to have control over the learning
process
[ contd ]
Adult Learners are said to learn best . . . [ contd ]
~ When there is active participation in
the process
~ When sufficient time is provided for
assimilation of new information
~ When there is an opportunity to
practice and apply what they have
learned
~ When there is a focus on relevant
problems and practical applications
~ When there is feedback to assess
progress towards their goals.
Students’ attention span
In the conventional chalk-talk lecture
students assume a purely passive role
and their concentration
fades off after 15-20 minutes.
Strike while the iron is hot
Learning
must be relevant to students.
Learning
includes practical applications.
Content must be
specific, concise and fast.
Students are hungry for information and will
search for it on their own
if teachers do not present
what they perceive to be relevant.
They want to be taught
how and where to find what they need and
when they need it.

2015 Oct 17 – Problems faced by Teachers - Faculty Development Programme - Aurora Degree and PG College, Hyderabad [Please download and view to appreciate better the animation aspects]

  • 1.
  • 2. Welcome Enthusiastic Participants of Faculty Development Programme Aurora Degree and PG College Prof. V. Viswanadham
  • 5. Why have a Faculty Development Programme ?
  • 6. Today T ~ This is an O ~ Opportunity to D ~ Do A ~ A Work, better than Y ~ Yesterday.
  • 7. If a society recognises the central role of education to sustain its future democratic destiny … start improving the quality and performance of the Faculty.
  • 8. It is hoped that this session will spark and fuel discussion on the scope for further improvement and greater commitment. M. A. D.
  • 9. In case you are ready to Make A Difference Please raise your hands. I want 4 Volunteers, Please
  • 10. Attitudes, Skills and Knowledge – and much more importantly, ACTIONS
  • 11. “we want our teachers to be highly effective.” A teacher can be highly qualified but still not very effective.
  • 12. Change happens, whether we take action or not. Resistance to change … is not a positive thing, particularly, when change is for the better. Take an active part. If you do not, the change will happen without you.
  • 13. The five biggest challenges are: 1. Quality education 2. Lack of Problem oriented education 3. Lack of art education (i.e. we are training head more as compared to hand and heart) 4. Education is moving away from humanity and human relations 5. More dependence on machines and computers- ( machines becoming more dearer and important than life) The Scenario
  • 15. Today, information and communications technologies (ICTs) infiltrate classrooms around the world at an exceedingly rapid pace. In the wake of this influx, Teachers face growing challenges as they teach a very “wired”— and more and more “wireless”— generation of students using technology that is evolving every day.
  • 16. “Today’s digital students think of ICT as something akin to oxygen; they expect it, it’s what they breathe and it’s how they live.” Are you Ready ?
  • 17. 21st Century Pedagogy Builds – Technological, Information and Media Fluencies Teaches – Contextuality Is – Inter-disciplinary Works – Collaboratively Uses – Project based Learning Fasters – Problem Solving Is assessed – Transparently Develops – Thinking Skills
  • 18. MIND MAP to explain concepts in an innovative way. Make students familiar with Mind Maps, to help them ~ make notes. Mind Maps help the teaching and learning process, by linking the different aspects, using only key words and images. makes it easier ~ to remember and review because of their visual quality. ~ to link and cross-reference different elements of the map.
  • 19. Z TO A APPROACH This approach attempts to explain the application part of a particular concept first, and then explain the theory, and then further effects of such applications.
  • 20. Teachers firstly must learn self – learning and then teach learners
  • 21. Teach How To Learn “Learning” is an abstract concept to many. By helping students understand the art of learning, the techniques of learning, as well as the different learning styles, they will be empowered by the process.
  • 22. Some Observations on Teaching and Learning Methods 1. The emphasis in most Institutions is on exam oriented "learning". 2. The prevalent 'direct teaching' method discourages student curiosity, questioning, innovation and feedback. 3. Innovation in teaching and learning aimed at development of creative and original thinking skills is rare 4. There is very little learning from first principles (cause-effect learning)
  • 23. Some Observations on Teaching and Learning Methods 5. Few teachers relate learning to actual phenomena in nature (development of physical intuition) 6. There is very little focus on application of knowledge and development of relevant practical skills. 7. There are few incentives and opportunities for creative, collaborative and hands-on learning. 8. Most teachers display a distinct lack of imagination and initiative in interpreting and enriching textbook learning.
  • 24. Some Observations on Teaching and Learning Methods 9. The "factory based" approach combined with the race to secure a graduate degree, has produced a large number of "graduates" without effective thinking, application, teamwork and leadership skills, - with far reaching consequences 10. The lead-time for training and retraining new recruits in industry as well as the cost of such training is increasing. 11. Productivity throughout the economic system is low
  • 25. So, with such a Big Problematic Situation – What can I do, as a Single Person ? Some Observations on Teaching and Learning Methods 12. Accelerating expectations combined with a lack of productive opportunity has created a potentially volatile situation. 13. Cultural enrichment of students, a key education objective, is not happening
  • 27. Pedagogy is the discipline that deals with the theory and practice of education. It is concerned with the study and practice of how best to teach.
  • 28. 21st Century Learning needs ~ Experience ~ Reflect ~ Connect ~ Create
  • 29. The use of innovative methods has the potential not only to improve education, but also to empower people, strengthen governance and galvanize the effort to achieve the human development goal for the country.
  • 30.
  • 31. Two pedagogical ideas Learner empowerment – actively involving students in learning development and processes of ‘co-creation’ Future-facing education – refocusing learning towards engagement and change processes that help people to consider prospects and hopes for the future across the globe.
  • 32. Need for updating Teachers’ Knowledge [ Using Library Resources ]
  • 33. Skills for Modern Teachers ~ Organisation ~ Tolerance ~ Social ~ Innovative ~ Commitment ~ Open for Questioning ~ Preparation / Practice ~ Technology Enthusiast
  • 34. Providing teachers with an open, flexible learning environment where inquiries are shared, interventions devised collaboratively and reflections based on both self and peer observations, can lead to the development of a robust, continuously improving community of practice.
  • 35. Knowledge of Faculty [ Basic Concepts ]
  • 36. The Health, Strength, Depth and Wealth lies in the Roots
  • 37. 21st Century Teachers Understand ~ What are digital literary skills and why they are important ~ How to create and develop a collaborative learning culture ~ How to make the most of the mobile devices Students carry with them, anyway ~ The value of creating a Personal Learning Environment ~ The Learning should be an engaging process with no boundaries ~ How to use cloud-based services
  • 38. Shifts noticed ? / Unnoticed ? ~ Teaching Adults – [not children] ~ Student centered – [not Teacher centered] ~ Knowledge Oriented – [Syllabus Oriented] ~ Practice Oriented – [Theory oriented]
  • 39. Moral Values [ Teachers and Students ~ and the Gap ]
  • 40.
  • 41. Need for conducting specially designed Teacher Induction Programmes, and Student Induction Programmes, where emphasis is laid on Values, Ethics and such other value-oriented requirements.
  • 42. "Parents are in a terribly difficult position today. In so many families both parents have to work, and teenagers, particularly, wind up at home alone. It's not a big mystery why many get in trouble."
  • 43. Involvement of Teachers [ in taking classes and in Valuation ]
  • 47. Student Psychology [ honestly speaking, not my area ]
  • 48. The Question is not Whether I can hear. The Question is Whether you are interesting enough.
  • 50. Our system provides for Uniformity ~ the brightest and the not so smart are Expected to Learn at the same speed
  • 51. Parent’s views: I want the College, to ready my children for the future, to give them real options for what follows after graduation. I want the College to help my children grow up to be happy, prosperous, and decent citizens.”
  • 52. 21st Century Learning Culture ~ Inclusiveness ~ Courage to Act ~ Flexibility ~ Systems Perspective ~ Empowerment ~ Social Responsibility ~ Talent Development ~ Ownership ~ Ethics ~ Values-Driven ~ Evidence-based ~ Creativity ~ Innovation ~ Transparency ~ Trust and Accountability
  • 53.
  • 54. Finding Solutions to the Problems: As the problems facing teachers today are many and varied, so are the solutions. Just as there is no one problem, there is no one solution.
  • 55. Students Learn Differently There Are Seven Learning Styles Visual: Using sight Auditory: Using songs or rhythms Verbal: Speaking out loud the information Kinesthetic: Using touch and taste to explore the information Logical: A more mathematical approach to concepts Interpersonal: Learning in groups Intrapersonal: Learning alone
  • 56. Let Them Teach – to each other and to the class One of the most effective methods for absorbing knowledge is to teach the knowledge back to another. Provide students with ample opportunity to give lectures, presentations.
  • 57. Create Hunger And Curiosity When students are interested in a subject, their ability to learn greatly increases. They will have more focus, tenacity, initiative, engagement, and investment in the material.
  • 58. Our job as teachers is to take students to the edge of their comfort zone and invite them to step out. Teach students about the Learning Pit. Often, when students start a new project they seem to be clear of the task and have a positive outlook towards the completion. However somewhere along the learning journey, they get stuck, unsure, confused and the work gets hard.
  • 59. These are signals to suggest learning is about to occur! At this point the key is to teach students the strategies to get themselves out of ‘The Pit.” This may include: persisting, thinking flexibly, using past knowledge, using your senses, finding humour, asking for help, working with others and questioning. These are some of the Thinking Dispositions that are the rungs of the ladder used to climb out of ‘The Pit”. Once out of the pit and the project is completed, it important to take time to reflect on the journey and the next steps.
  • 60. STUDENTS GET BORED EASILY Students today are exposed to all forms of media, thanks to smartphone and social media - designed to be highly engaging and addictive. When children are exposed to such an interactive environment at home, they get easily bored and distracted if the lesson in class, as it is usually not engaging or interactive enough. Gone are the days when teachers could teach a lesson using a text book.
  • 61. STUDENTS IN THE SAME CLASS AT DIFFERENT ACADEMIC LEVELS A teacher is faced with a situation where the academic levels vary for many students. This is a major challenge that results in more attention to students lagging behind and complaints from students, who find class lessons “too easy”, leading to inattention, and may be indiscipline.
  • 62. The five biggest challenges are: 1. Quality education 2. Lack of Problem oriented education 3. Lack of art education (i.e. we are training head more as compared to hand and heart) 4. Education is moving away from humanity and human relations 5. More dependence on machines and computers.( machines becoming more dearer and important than life)
  • 64. The Truth About Technology Rewiring students’ brains, making it tougher to reach and teach them. “easily distracted generation with short attention spans” Digital technologies “do more to distract students than to help them academically.” Can we integrate this technology, with Teaching ? – a big Challenge
  • 65. To bridge the ever-widening gap between the Teacher and Student Community, Managements must consider having a system of Advisor / Counsellor / Mentoring. As per a survey, such a person should have: 1. should be experienced and well trained by the institution, regarding graduation requirements, general studies and other major requirements 2. should act as both a mentor and a friend 3. should be open minded and trustworthy [ contd ] Felt need for Advisor / Counsellor / Mentor
  • 66. 4. should be career oriented in their field of profession 5. should prepare for each advising session and should review student file prior to meeting 6. should allocate a longer period 7. should get involved with student personal life as far as a student feels comfortable 8. should assist student to plan for a proper career objective 9. should be familiar with most programs and services that institution offers [ contd ] Felt need for Advisor / Counsellor / Mentor
  • 67. 10. should be willing to discuss with students out of offered office hours 11. should be resourceful 12. should assist student to choose classes and to determine major/minor, if any. 13. should assist student in internship opportunities / grooming them for placements 14. should inform students about their academic progress as well as their academic problems Felt need for Advisor / Counsellor / Mentor
  • 68. Adult Learners are said to learn best . . . ~ When they want or need to learn something ~ in a non-threatening environment ~ When the individual learning style needs are met ~ When their previous experience is valued and utilized ~ When there are opportunities for them to have control over the learning process [ contd ]
  • 69. Adult Learners are said to learn best . . . [ contd ] ~ When there is active participation in the process ~ When sufficient time is provided for assimilation of new information ~ When there is an opportunity to practice and apply what they have learned ~ When there is a focus on relevant problems and practical applications ~ When there is feedback to assess progress towards their goals.
  • 71. In the conventional chalk-talk lecture students assume a purely passive role and their concentration fades off after 15-20 minutes.
  • 72.
  • 73. Strike while the iron is hot
  • 74. Learning must be relevant to students. Learning includes practical applications. Content must be specific, concise and fast. Students are hungry for information and will search for it on their own if teachers do not present what they perceive to be relevant. They want to be taught how and where to find what they need and when they need it.
  • 75. What was your score at the beginning of the session ? What do you want your score to be in 5 years from now ?
  • 76. Begin – to Make a Difference, from Today
