6. TOKYO
Tokyo is Japan's capital and the world's most populous metropolis with 37
million inhabitants. Located in the Kanto region, on the largest island of Japan
(Honshu).
Prior to 1868, Tokyo was known as Edo. A small casttle town in the 16th
century, Edo became Japan's political center in 1603. A few decades later,
Edo had grown into one of the world's most populous cities. With the Meiji
Restoration of 1868, the emperor and capital moved from Kyoto to Edo,
which was renamed Tokyo ("Eastern Capital").
Large parts of Tokyo were destroyed in the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923
and in the air raids of 1945.
Today, the city hosts 51 of the Fortune Global 500 companies, the highest
number of any city in the world.

The current Imperial Palace is located on the former site of Edo Castle, a large park area surrounded by moats and massive stone walls in the center of Tokyo, a short walk from Tokyo Station. It is the residence of Japan's Imperial Family.
Edo Castle used to be the seat of the Tokugawa shogun who ruled Japan from 1603 until 1867. In 1868, the shogunate was overthrown, and the country's capital and Imperial Residence were moved from Kyoto to Tokyo. In 1888 construction of a new Imperial Palace was completed. The palace was once destroyed during W.O.II, and rebuilt in the same style, afterwards.
The Imperial Palace East Gardens are open to the public throughout the year except on Mondays, Fridays and special occasions.
Senso-ji, also known as Asakusa Kannon Temple, is a Buddhist temple located in Asakusa. It is one of Tokyo’s most colorful and popular temples.
The legend says that in the year 628, two brothers fished a statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, out of the Sumida River, and even though they put the statue back into the river, it always returned to them. Consequently, Sensoji was built nearby for the goddess of Kannon.
The temple was completed in 645, making it Tokyo’s oldest temple.
A shopping street of over 200 meters, called Nakamise, leads from the outer gate to the temple's second gate, the Hozomon.
The Tokyo Skytree is a new television broadcasting tower and landmark of Tokyo. It is the centerpiece of the Tokyo Skytree Town in the Sumida City Ward, not far away from Asakusa. With a height of 634 meters (634 can be read as "Musashi", a historic name of the Tokyo Region), it is the tallest building in Japan and the second tallest structure in the world at the time of its completion. A large shopping complex with aquarium is located at its base.
The middle floor has the Musashi Sky Restaurant, which serves French-Japanese fusion cuisine, while the lowest floor features a cafe and some glass panels on the ground from where you can look all the way down to the base of the tower.
