Introduction Before December of 1991, The Soviet Union lived under communism rule. Under this rule, people had very limited rights. The government held all the power, and controlled almost every aspect of a person’s everyday life.

Background Information The Soviet Union had a communist government from 1917 to 1991. The Soviet Union was known as one of the largest communist organizations in the world.

Communism falls under socialism ideology. It controls all aspects of every single persons life whether it be going to the grocery store, to the way people think. It’s much like enslavement because people are forced to live in fear. Everything was controlled by the government. Communism

Who? The Soviet Union What? The fall of the Soviet Union When? December 25th, 1991 Where? The Soviet Union One major reason was because in 1985, Saudi Arabia no longer supported oil prices. That resulted in the Soviet Union losing 20 billion dollars a year. The Soviet Union tried making new policies to help, but they simply were not enough. Why?

The Fall December 1991: the world watched as the Soviet Union broke up into fifteen different independent countries. The fall was caused by a victorious fight from West. The fall of the Soviet Union showed that capitalism had advantage over socialism. This ended the Cold War. On December 25th, 1991, Mikhail Gorbachev, resigned as the leader of the Soviet Union. He had tried everything in his power to save the Union, such as giving the citizens freedom of speech in 1985. Although, after they had gotten that freedom, all it was used for is to criticize Mikhail because he was failing to improve their economy.

Economic Causes of the Fall Lack of good information left all citizens of the Soviet Union suspicious about the propaganda of the government controlled media. Policy failures that Mikhail Gorbachev had designed all failed. Which resulted in the Soviet Union becoming very weak. *Interesting Fact!* Living under communism rule, all people had only two television channels to watch.

Communism: Good or Bad? Good? Bad? -Everyone is treated equally -You have no personal freedoms -Very little crime rate, because all the laws are so stern -Focuses too much on a group, instead of one single person -There is good investments in education -Everything belongs to the government -All the laws are very strict -Everyone is employed

Growing up in Communist Rule Your childhood years are when a person first becomes aware of being under the communist system. In school, all students are forced to either minimize or completely eliminate the words “I” and “me” because they are supposed to refer everything to “The State’s” As the young person enters college, and is becoming a young adult, they have to make some decisions: - Withdraw from all religion - The young person leave their parents to serve “The State” They learn that, there are no individual rights. There is no freedom of religion, assembly, or speech. There is no free media, and no right of privacy. The government can easily look at your email account, and cell phone history and inbox. The government controls all forms of communication.

After Communism ended… Lives became so much more stress free. All personal rights were granted back to every person that lost them under communist rule. All people had their freedoms back, and had much better living conditions.
