INTRODUCTION
Plant breeding is the science of altering the genetic
pattern of plants to increase their value. It has been practiced
for thousands of years, since near the beginning of human
civilization and it is now practiced worldwide by individuals
such as gardeners and farmers, or by ably professional plant
breeders. It can be accomplished through variety of
techniques. Plant breeding can benefit us a lot and helps our
society. Poverty, the lack of basic capacity to participate
effectively in society, remains the most critical social problem
that needs to be addressed, plant breeding may have a
colossal effect in our society because it helps in maintaining
food supply and it also does reduce malnutrition, hunger and
food shortage.
TOMATO
The tomato is an edible, colored red fruit. The
tomato is consumed in diverse ways, including raw,
as an ingredient in many dishes. Tomatoes are one
of the most common garden fruits that are planted
because they grow fast and it’s proficient for plant
breeding.
FEATURES OF MARIMAR AND DIAMANTE
MARIMAR
Heat tolerant variety and execute well in off-
season planting. Marimar is very firm and the
fruits are plum shaped, very stiff with an
average size of 30- 35 grams. It is a good
tolerance to foliar diseases makes this variety
suitable for off-season planting.
DIAMANTE
An advanced hybrid variety for year round
tomato production in the Philippine lowlands.
This variety is heat tolerant allowing for better
fruit set under hot conditions. The fruits are high
round in shape, over 40 grams in weight and
have a very thick flesh. It has a high level of
resistance to bacterial wilt.
•STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
This study aims to develop a new variety of
tomato or a high yield tomato.
Specifically, it seeks the answer to the following
questions:
1. How many fruit yielded by the controlled group?
2. How heavy does the fruit yielded by the
controlled and experimental group?
3. Is there a significant difference between the fruit
yielded for the uncontrolled group and
experimental group in terms of the weight and
numbers?
•HYPOTHESIS OF THE STUDY
From the statement of the problem stated,
hypothesis is hereby presented:
There is no significant difference between
the fruit yield by the uncontrolled and
experimental group in terms of the weight and
numbers.
•SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This study will be one of the solution on the
problems malnutrition, food shortage and poverty
in the country. The results of the study will be of
great help or benefit to the following people:
• Students
• Parents
• Teachers
• Government
• Agriculturists
• Community
• Future researchers
HOW PLANT BREEDING BENEFITS;
STUDENTS:
If they have the knowledge about Plant Breeding,
in the future, they already have a background study
about this certain topic that can help their education.
PARENTS:
Plant Breeding benefits parents by decreasing
their time and energy in preparing different dishes
using the ingredients that are already bred.
TEACHERS:
If they know more about this particular topic, they
will have the capability to give immersed information
to their students.
HOW PLANT BREEDING BENEFITS;
GOVERNMENT:
This benefits the government’s economy and reduces
different social problems that needs to be addressed such
as hunger and food shortage.
AGRICULTURISTS:
Plant Breeders/Agriculturists will have the opportunity
to make a difference in lives across the world by improving
plants for food.
COMMUNITY:
It benefits the community by supplying food to the
increasing population.
FUTURE RESEARCHERS:
They can use it to have a more profound idea about the
subject and then later on develop and produce new variety
of plants.
SCOPE AND DELIMINATION
This research is about plant breeding tomatoes
and we used two variety of seeds, Marimar and
Diamante. There is a controlled group and
experimental group. We should be able to breed
these tomatoes and observe them.
MATERIALS:
•Black plastic pots
•Black palay husk
•Soil
•Tomato Seeds
•Shovels
ACTIVITIES
August 27,2013
We started preparing for the Unified Project. We will be
planting tomatoes.
September 3-4, 2013
We cleaned the side part of the school where we'll put the
plants, we took pictures and it's a bit hard cleaning it because
there's a lot of big and long bamboos scattered.
September 10-11, 2013
We put soil in the black plastic pots where we’ll be planting
and crushed soils and after a day , we placed the burned palay
husk together with the soil that we mixed.
September 16-20 ,2013
For a week, we observed the plants and watered them too but
we only have 2 plastic pots that have plants on them, there were
no plants that grew on the third plastic pot because the soil is clay.
