DRAMA & ARTS IN EDUCATION
Drama games and strategies engage students in learning
through lively and fun activities. They can be adapted to
teach language at all levels as well as developing
teamwork, self-confidence and communication skills.
Drama strategies can be used as everyday teaching tools for a wide
range of subjects. They can illuminate the human dimension of
subject areas, such as how scientific progress may impact on
individuals and communities. Drama is particularly useful when
working on cross-curricular themes as it naturally bridges subject
areas. If children take on the roles of archaeologists in Egypt, drama
can link history, geography, mythology and art as well as the
mathematics of pyramids and the science of building them. Real
education implies reflection, introspection and action, with a deep
relationship between the Head, Heart and Hand. Drama and art helps
the student teacher to understand the self and to realize it as a form
of self expression and for enhancing creativity.

real-life events that changed everything forever.
4. काई पो चे: The film title Kai Po Che! is originally a Gujarati phrase that means
"I have cut" which refers to Makar Sankranti (known as Uttarayan in Gujarat) where
one of the competitors uses his kite to cut off another competitors' kite and yells "Kai
Po Che!"
Kai Po che एक गुजराती स्लैंग है। जो पतंगबाजी क

6. ‘Kai Po Che’, is a story of male bonding in the time of the devastating Gujarat earthquake
and the disturbing Godhra riots.Three close friends - Govind, Ishaan and Omi -- seem
inseparable. But can they overcome the odds to stay together for life?
Based on Chetan Bhagat's The 3 Mistakes of My Life, in his second outing, Abhishek
Kapoor raises the bar by giving us a thoroughly enjoyable film that showcases the
strong emotions between the three protagonists ( the major characters in a play,
film) who are boisterous, ballistic and at times plain bored. The film captures their
trials and tribulations in the post-college, pre-what-career-to-pursue period. They have
two passions -- cricket and their camaraderie. And two of them (Ishaan and Omi) also
have concerned parents who want them to find direction quickly. They find temporary
succour when they turn their passion for the sport into a business venture; opening a
store selling sports equipment. The rebellious Ishaan sobers down a bit as he lands an
opportunity to impart cricket coaching to the neighbourhood boy, Ali.
Suddenly, tragedy strikes in the form of the 2001 Gujarat earthquake and the 2002
Godhra riots. Both these calamities expose the chinks in the armour of the friendship
between the boys. They also throw open the can of worms that brought to light the
tainted Hindu-Muslim hatred, one of the darkest chapters in the history of Gujarat.
7. Storyline and message
Govind lives by math, probability and profit, Omi by his loyalties, allegiances and
conveniences, while Ishaan is all heart, selfless and easily angered. Yet, they all have
echoes of each other and end up shaping each other to do exactly the opposite of who they
are, by the time the film winds up.
Abhishek Kapoor and Chetan Bhagat pull this off with refreshing restraint and sublime
subtlety and continuously keep us at the edge of the seat with a compelling, unpredictable
narrative that’s brewing with the tension and volatility of an India torn between capitalists,
politicians and dreamers.
This is us. The real middle class India. Real people, not stars. Real houses, not sets. Real
clothes not fancy pants. You’ll fall in love with everything about India. And Gujarat.
Kai Po Che is everything that Rock On and 3 Idiots were, put together — dreams and
aspirations, friendship standing test of time, the pursuit of excellence, a commentary of our
education system and a coming-of-age film with not a single moment of dishonesty. We
haven’t seen stronger characterisation, economy in words, visuals or time, in recent
mainstream films.
The three leads are a revelation. Rajkumar Yadav, Amit Sadh and Sushant Singh Rajput are
the best things to happen to Hindi cinema in a while — intense performers with an electric
8. There are four types of drama,
they are comedy, tragedy,
tragicomedy and melodrama.
Daniel Eagan of the Film Journal International complimented the film, praising its authenticity .
He praised the use of real situations mixed with the film's narrative, particularly complimenting
the film's focusing on the character development during the events rather than overuse of
special effects. He appreciated the films use of "universal themes", and praised the way India
was portrayed; describing this narrative on India as "on brink of the future, and yet still divided
by wealth and poverty, by class and religion." He likewise admired the acting of the film, stating
that all of the main characters "give strong performances." He completes his review by stating
"this is a film whose scope, detail and appealing characters deserve a wide audience.“

11. What is drama
an exciting, emotional, or unexpected event or circumstance.
a play for theatre, radio, or television.
Drama definition is a narrative presented by actors/actor on a stage
through dialogue/monologue and live action. Usually, dramas are
stories that are acted. Through the combination of performance, music,
dance, props, etc; the audience is able to feel like a part of the action.
This is what makes drama a unique genre of literature. Of course, you
can also read drama; however, you will get the full impression of what
the author intended to show only when you visit a theater.
12. Using Drama in Mathematics teaching
Maths makes a lot more sense when it is applied to
real or fictional situations
For younger children, this can be through role-play in shop or restaurant
situations.
Journeys across the sea, through space or around the world offer potential for
acting and storytelling which can include mathematical activities such as
calculating journey times and duration, quantities of food and fuel and recording
of temperature.
Mathematical patterns can be demonstrated and explored through physical
movement and dance.
Pupils are more likely to remember geometric shapes if they have made them
with their own material
13. Using drama in Science and Technology
Science learning can be extended through activities using dance, mime, movement
and objects to explore physical forces such as gravity, friction or magnetism, or
to represent the action of molecules, planets, geological phenomena or electrical
circuits. A journey through the body gives great potential for storytelling and drama.
Pupils can model food chains or create human bar graphs to display living
representations of scientific results. The human aspect of science is particularly
suitable for exploration through drama. Where do you stand? helps to dissect moral
dilemmas. Role play, improvisation and teacher in role can explore how human
activity affects living things and the environment, highlighting controversial
ethical issues. This can lead on to improvised drama such as the enacting of
documentary TV programmes, debates and discussions. Technology can help to
extend and develop drama activities through the use of multimedia, such as
photography, video, animation and sound recording.
14. Bringing Fairy Tales to Life through Drama
Classroom activity:
Just a Minute
Age: 10 to adult
Players: Small Groups
Time: 20 minutes
Skills: Improvisation, Devising
Give each group ten minutes to prepare a one-minute
performance of a fairy tale. Rehearsal isn’t important.
Focus on making sure the group all know the story, cast
the characters and away you go! The fun is in trying to
fit everything in to a minute – be strict and use a timer.
15. Ti Phulraani
Ti Phulraani, loosely translated, means ‘The Flower Queen’ and is an
adaptation of George Bernard Shaw’s acclaimed play, Pygmalion.

In the original play, a professor accepts a challenge to teach a
flower seller (girl) language and etiquette so that she can pass off as
royalty. In this version, a Marathi language professor tries to bring
about refinement in a simple flower-selling girl so that she can be
easily accepted into higher society. The role of this flower seller was
glorified by the late actress, Bhakti Barve-Inamdar. Her sassy
monologues from this play are even memorable today and a source
of pleasure. This play appeals to all age groups.

16. George Bernard Shaw
George Bernard Shaw is famous for his role in
revolutionizing comedic drama. He was also a
literary critic and a prominent British
socialist. Shaw's most financially successful work,
Pygmalion, was adapted into the popular
Broadway musical My Fair Lady. He won the Nobel
Prize for Literature in 1925
17. Ammaldar by P.L.Deshpande is based
on Nikolai Gogol's Inspector General
Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol was a Ukrainian-born
Russian writer. He contributed to Russian literature
through his magnificently crafted dramas, novels
and short stories. He was one of the major
proponents of the natural school of Russian literary
realism. His notable works include Evenings on a
Farm Near Dikanka, The Government
Inspector and “The Portrait”.
18. All The Best
The play is a humorous take on three friends – one who is deaf, one who
can’t speak and one who is blind – and the situations that arise when they fall
in love with the same girl.
A modern perspective towards the hardships in the love life of the physically
challenged.
This play has been translated into Gujarati and Hindi, and a movie has been
made in Bollywood based on the original.
The source of wit is the ploys and plans of the three to capture the heart of
this girl. In a society which regards physical handicap as a nuisance, making it
highly impossible for them to find a job or a matrimonial match, let alone love,
this play deals with the issues in a lighter, livelier way.
19. Katyar Kaljaat Ghusali
Katyar Kaljat Ghusali is a Marathi musical play (sangeet natak),
originally released in 1967, that was so popular that more than 1,000
shows were staged within a short period of time. The play was written
by Purushottam Darvhekar. The story depicts the clash of
two gharanas (schools) of Indian classical music.
The play had beautiful pieces of classical music by the then-popular
classical musicians. These pieces are immortal in the history of
Hindustani classical, even today. The plot of the play becomes more
intriguing when good music is fused together with a suspenseful
storyline.
