Question 1.
When X died in 1940, believing himself to be a failure, it almost seems as if he was forgotten.
Y was critically acclaimed but it never sold well during his lifetime. Years of heavy drinking
had taken their toll on him.
Ironically, X’s funeral was much like the funeral of his most famous protagonist: Here’s how
it is described in the novel:
“A little before 3, the Lutheran minister arrived from Fleshing, and I began to look
involuntarily out the windows, for other cars. So did A’s father. And as the time passed,
and the servants came in and stood waiting in the hall, his eyes began to blink anxiously;
and he spoke of the rain in a worried, uncertain way. The minister glanced several times at
his watch, so I took him aside and asked him to wait for half an hour. But it wasn’t any
use; nobody came.”
And the
answer is ...
F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby
Question 2.
Identify the poem and the poet.

And the
answer is ...
Rashmirathi, Ramdhari Singh Dinkar
Question 3.
Until recently X, 43, and the only child of a particle physicist and an electronics engineer,
was a successful computer programmer, and wrote code for the hugely popular 1995 game
Warcraft II, and more recently worked for Mobile-Iron, a company that works with big firms
to make sure their employees’ mobile phones synchronise with their corporate systems.
In 2009 he began posting the story on his website, chapter by chapter. 'I wasn’t
writing for a mainstream audience,’ he says. 'I was writing for this core group of
extremely technical dorks like me.’ As the serial progressed, he picked up around
3,000 readers, who would send corrections if he got the technicalities slightly wrong.
What was truly astounding was that he didn’t have any contacts in the core industry at
that time - “I didn’t know anyone in ____, so all my research was on Google.”
And the
answer is ...
Andy Weir, The Martian
Question 4.
The unfaithful husband who wants a divorce. The clever, well-known wife, beloved by the
public. The strange, misleading clues. A money belt stuffed full of cash. Headline news.
Thousands of volunteers helping with the search. The sudden reappearance and the public
thanks from the loving couple… and the lingering uncertainty about what really happened.
That’s the plot of _________’s American film thriller X. Oddly enough, it’s also what
happened to Y in real life, in 1926.
X’s writer, of course, is a fan of Y – how could she not be? Y’s books are still third on the all-
time bestseller lists, as it were, after the Bible and Shakespeare.
And the
answer is ...
Gone Girl, Agatha Christie
Question 5. [1/2]
If you went to school in UP/Bihar/Rajasthan in the 1980s and ’90s, you would have
discovered him in debate competitions. Born in Bijnore, UP, in 1933, he studied in
Allahabad University. But most of his literary life was spent in Bhopal, where he was
employed by All India Radio as a scriptwriter. While he wrote novels, poetry and short
stories to great acclaim in the early years, he is most remembered for bringing the Hindi
ghazal to the fore with his celebrated collection Saaye Mein Dhoop.
In school, it was a tradition to start or end the debates with a taali-maar line of Hindi or
Urdu poetry, and he seemed to have a monopoly there. A defeatist argument would end
with:
Kahaan toh tayy tha chiragaan har ek ghar ke liye,
kahaan charaag mayassar nahin shahar ke liye.
Question 5. [2/2]
And an aggressive, revolutionary topic would conclude by proclaiming:
Ho gayi hai peer parvat si, pighalni chaahiye,
iss Himalaya se koi Ganga niklani chaahiye.
His subtle jab at Indira Gandhi’s dictatorial ways went like:
“Mat kaho aakaash mein kohra ghana hai,
yeh kisi ki vyaktigat aalochana hai.”
His poetry was brought again into forefront by being used as the lyrics of one of the popular
songs of a recent movie that went on to win at the Cannes. Filmfare and National awards
(first movie to do so). Give me the movie, song, poet.
And the
answer is ...
Dushyant Kumar, Masaan, Tu kisi rail si

Question 2.
Recently ranked number eight in The Hollywood Reporter’s list of 100 favorite movie quotes
of all time, X recently made this statement :
“Every day for 40 fucking years,” he said in introducing the film, “at least one of you has
come up to me and said – what do you think – ‘___ ______ __ ___’”
X made up the entire sequence on the spot. As Schrader pointed out, he wrote a vague
description of what would go on in the scene.
“The script said he looks in the mirror and plays like a cowboy, pulls out his gun, talks to
himself,” Schrader said. “So Bob called me and said, ‘What does he say?’ and I said, ‘Well,
act like you’re a kid and you got that little holster and cap gun and you’re standing there.’ He
took it from there.
And the
answer is ...
Robert De Niro, You talkin to me?
Question 3.
X, the modern name, has been variously interpreted as "Mound of the Dead Men"
in Sindhi, and as "Mound of Mohan" (where Mohan is Krishna). The city's original
name is unknown. Based on his discoveries made in recent times, Iravatham
Mahadevan speculates that the city's ancient name could have been Kukkutarma
("the city [-rma] of the cockerel [kukkuta]"). Cock-fighting may have had ritual
and religious significance for the city, with domesticated chickens bred there for
sacred purposes, rather than as a food source. X may furthermore have been a
point of diffusion for the eventual worldwide domestication of chickens.

At the verge of becoming one of the greatest actress of her generation, a young X fell in love with Y, 14
years her senior and a legend amongst his peers.
“I learned more about acting from Y than anybody,” Al Pacino has said. “All I wanted to do was work with
Y for the rest of my life. He was my acting partner.” He was known among directors as “20 Questions,”
because he wanted detailed back story on all his characters. And then there were his unusual looks, so
perfect for the misfits of ’70s cinema: attenuated frame, high forehead, prominent nose. Sad, black eyes.
They were the envy of the New York theater world — she the most naturally gifted actress in generations,
he the most naturally gifted actor, legendary director Joe Papp their patron — until one day in May 1977,
when Y was diagnosed with cancer.
X’s strength of character is particularly lauded for how she took care of him during this period, but
ultimately lost him. Friends and relatives say that this incident left deep scars on X.
Question 5.

Question 1.
Earlier this month, X, owned by Y, opened its first standalone store in Infiniti mall in Malad,
a suburb in Mumbai.
The 1,000 square feet store with rose gold fittings caters to 25-26-year-old women’s western
wear market with styles that are inspired by international trends, catwalks and Instagram.
Like the international fast fashion brands Zara and H&M, it refreshes 10% of its collection
every week by adding new pieces and phasing out 10% as well.
The store comes with a selfie booth, or a large Android screen, which allows consumers to
browse through the collection, click pictures and even print the picture or post it on social
media sites like Facebook and share with friends on WhatsApp.

answer is ...

Question 2.
X Group plc is a British alternative investment management business. The company manages about US
$72.3 billion (30 September 2014) and employs over 1,200 people in 14 locations worldwide and is
headquartered at Riverbank House in London.
The company was founded in 1783, by James X, a barrel maker. The following year the company secured
the contract to supply the Royal Navy with the rum for its daily “rum tot”, a tradition under which all
sailors were allocated a daily ration of rum. The company moved into rum and sugar broking, and then
later expanded into other commodities such as coffee and cocoa. Throughout the nineteenth century and
into the twentieth, it became a major market participant in commodity exchanges; and the firm’s
twentieth century partners established the company as a broker to third parties.
This venture prompted a move into financial services, which the company increasingly concentrated on.
In 2000, the commodity trading companies went private with the result that X became exclusively a
financial services company

Question 1.
In 1978, when X chose the constituency, it not only put the picturesque Y on the global map,
but also gave X political rebirth.
Apart from being a pivotal moment for X, this election is widely regarded for one of the
defining slogans of the Indian political landscape, It was was either penned down by the
party-poet Srikant Verma or Devraj Urs (disputed), and was a sharp diatribe against the
opposition.
The slogan is structured thus:
“__ _____, ___ _______
Y, Y!”
And the
answer is ...
Indira Gandhi, Chikmagalur
Ek Sherni, Sau Langoor, Chikmagalur, Chikmagalur!
Question 2.
Contrary to common perception, this was inspired by two real life events as acknowledged by the
creator - “No matter how much I make up, there’s stuff in history that’s just as bad, or worse”
One was a case called The Black ________. The king of Scotland invited the young Earl of
Douglas to Edinburgh Castle for a feast. Then at the end of the feast, [the king's men] started
pounding on a single drum. They brought out a covered plate and put it in front of the Earl and
revealed it was the head of a black boar — the symbol of ______. And as soon as he saw it, he
knew what it meant”.
"The larger instance was the Glencoe _________. Clan MacDonald stayed with the Campbell
clan overnight and the laws of hospitality supposedly applied. But the Campbells arose at midnight
and did something strange.”
What did these two events inspire ?

answer is ...
The Red Wedding, G.R.R. Martin
Question 3. <Pictures included>
X was founded in the early 2000s by the supreme leader and it was decreed that all
buildings are to be built with white marble. In 2013, X made a record in the Guinness book
of records as the city with the largest number of buildings decorated with white marble
(4514 million square meters).
The city was built virtually from scratch, and at great expense. No other city in the former
Soviet Union was showered with this much money. Broad avenues, huge plazas, stupendous
buildings – we have already seen all of this proudly displayed in 50-s era Moscow and in
other Soviet cities. Replete with out of scale construction and vast distances that are difficult
to traverse by foot, it is the architecture aligned with the regime. It suppresses people,
showing the insignificance of the individual compared to the surroundings. Ideology
propaganda through art, while it seemed appropriate 70 years ago, looks strange in the
modern world.
And the
answer is ...
Ashgabat, Turkmenistan
Question 4.
A certain sect of people ( as of March 31, 2015 - 183,519) are referred to as hibakusha, which translates
literally as “____-________-______”.
According to the law, there are certain recognized categories of hibakusha: 1) Immediate 2) Within two
weeks or within 2 kms 3) Indirect 4) By birth
Studs Terkel's book The Good ___ includes a conversation with two hibakusha. The postscript observes:
“There is considerable discrimination in _____ against the hibakusha. It is frequently extended toward
their children as well: socially as well as economically. "Not only hibakusha, but their children, are
refused employment," says Mr. Kito. "There are many among them who do not want it known that they
are hibakusha."
Two of the most famous hibakusha are Sadako Sasaki and Tsutomu Yamaguchi. Who exactly are the
hibakusha?

Question 5.
The ___ ___ was a military operation undertaken in Australia over the latter part of 1932 to
address public concern over a hostile opponent running amok in the Campion district of Western
Australia.
The operation was conducted under the command of Major G.P.W. Meredith of the Seventh Heavy
Battery of the Royal Australian Artillery, with Meredith commanding a pair of soldiers armed with
two Lewis guns and 10,000 rounds of ammunition.
A specialist’s account of the a particular failure of the Australian attempt goes thus:
“The machine-gunners' dreams of point blank fire into serried masses of the enemy were soon
dissipated. The enemy command had evidently ordered guerrilla tactics, and its unwieldy army
soon split up into innumerable small units that made use of the military equipment uneconomic.
A crestfallen field force therefore withdrew from the combat area after about a month.”

Question 4.
This classic duet was partly improvised by A at the time of recording and B, determined to
show A how he would sing the duet better, got into the mood of the song and immortalized
it.
Legend also has it that B was upset by the fact that in the picturisation of the song, the
singing competition between the two heroes was won by the one, for whom the background
singing was done by A.
B didn't like the fact that a classically trained singer like himself would have to lose, though
only on-screen, to an untrained singer.
And the
answer is ...
Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey, Ek Chatur Naar, Padosan
Question 5.
When Sylvester Stallone set out to find a central track for Rocky, he really wanted to use this song, but the
1970s British rock band denied him permission to do so. Ultimately he had to settle for Eye of the Tiger.
In what can be termed as supreme irony, this song is used to train medical professionals to provide the
correct number of chest compressions per minute while performing CPR. The bassline has close to 110
beats per minute, and 100–120 chest compressions per minute are recommended by the British Heart
Foundation, and endorsed by the Resuscitation Council (UK).
The use of this song thus has been often criticized:
“Sure, it might have 100 beats per minute. But is that the message the clinician should have in her head
when trying to resuscitate someone?”

  • 7. Question 1. When X died in 1940, believing himself to be a failure, it almost seems as if he was forgotten. Y was critically acclaimed but it never sold well during his lifetime. Years of heavy drinking had taken their toll on him. Ironically, X’s funeral was much like the funeral of his most famous protagonist: Here’s how it is described in the novel: “A little before 3, the Lutheran minister arrived from Fleshing, and I began to look involuntarily out the windows, for other cars. So did A’s father. And as the time passed, and the servants came in and stood waiting in the hall, his eyes began to blink anxiously; and he spoke of the rain in a worried, uncertain way. The minister glanced several times at his watch, so I took him aside and asked him to wait for half an hour. But it wasn’t any use; nobody came.”

  • 13. Question 3. Until recently X, 43, and the only child of a particle physicist and an electronics engineer, was a successful computer programmer, and wrote code for the hugely popular 1995 game Warcraft II, and more recently worked for Mobile-Iron, a company that works with big firms to make sure their employees’ mobile phones synchronise with their corporate systems. In 2009 he began posting the story on his website, chapter by chapter. 'I wasn’t writing for a mainstream audience,’ he says. 'I was writing for this core group of extremely technical dorks like me.’ As the serial progressed, he picked up around 3,000 readers, who would send corrections if he got the technicalities slightly wrong. What was truly astounding was that he didn’t have any contacts in the core industry at that time - “I didn’t know anyone in ____, so all my research was on Google.”

  • 16. Question 4. The unfaithful husband who wants a divorce. The clever, well-known wife, beloved by the public. The strange, misleading clues. A money belt stuffed full of cash. Headline news. Thousands of volunteers helping with the search. The sudden reappearance and the public thanks from the loving couple… and the lingering uncertainty about what really happened. That’s the plot of _________’s American film thriller X. Oddly enough, it’s also what happened to Y in real life, in 1926. X’s writer, of course, is a fan of Y – how could she not be? Y’s books are still third on the all- time bestseller lists, as it were, after the Bible and Shakespeare.

  • 19. Question 5. [1/2] If you went to school in UP/Bihar/Rajasthan in the 1980s and ’90s, you would have discovered him in debate competitions. Born in Bijnore, UP, in 1933, he studied in Allahabad University. But most of his literary life was spent in Bhopal, where he was employed by All India Radio as a scriptwriter. While he wrote novels, poetry and short stories to great acclaim in the early years, he is most remembered for bringing the Hindi ghazal to the fore with his celebrated collection Saaye Mein Dhoop. In school, it was a tradition to start or end the debates with a taali-maar line of Hindi or Urdu poetry, and he seemed to have a monopoly there. A defeatist argument would end with: Kahaan toh tayy tha chiragaan har ek ghar ke liye, kahaan charaag mayassar nahin shahar ke liye.
  • 20. Question 5. [2/2] And an aggressive, revolutionary topic would conclude by proclaiming: Ho gayi hai peer parvat si, pighalni chaahiye, iss Himalaya se koi Ganga niklani chaahiye. His subtle jab at Indira Gandhi’s dictatorial ways went like: “Mat kaho aakaash mein kohra ghana hai, yeh kisi ki vyaktigat aalochana hai.” His poetry was brought again into forefront by being used as the lyrics of one of the popular songs of a recent movie that went on to win at the Cannes. Filmfare and National awards (first movie to do so). Give me the movie, song, poet.

  • 27. Question 2. Recently ranked number eight in The Hollywood Reporter’s list of 100 favorite movie quotes of all time, X recently made this statement : “Every day for 40 fucking years,” he said in introducing the film, “at least one of you has come up to me and said – what do you think – ‘___ ______ __ ___’” X made up the entire sequence on the spot. As Schrader pointed out, he wrote a vague description of what would go on in the scene. “The script said he looks in the mirror and plays like a cowboy, pulls out his gun, talks to himself,” Schrader said. “So Bob called me and said, ‘What does he say?’ and I said, ‘Well, act like you’re a kid and you got that little holster and cap gun and you’re standing there.’ He took it from there.

  • 30. Question 3. X, the modern name, has been variously interpreted as "Mound of the Dead Men" in Sindhi, and as "Mound of Mohan" (where Mohan is Krishna). The city's original name is unknown. Based on his discoveries made in recent times, Iravatham Mahadevan speculates that the city's ancient name could have been Kukkutarma ("the city [-rma] of the cockerel [kukkuta]"). Cock-fighting may have had ritual and religious significance for the city, with domesticated chickens bred there for sacred purposes, rather than as a food source. X may furthermore have been a point of diffusion for the eventual worldwide domestication of chickens.

  • 36. At the verge of becoming one of the greatest actress of her generation, a young X fell in love with Y, 14 years her senior and a legend amongst his peers. “I learned more about acting from Y than anybody,” Al Pacino has said. “All I wanted to do was work with Y for the rest of my life. He was my acting partner.” He was known among directors as “20 Questions,” because he wanted detailed back story on all his characters. And then there were his unusual looks, so perfect for the misfits of ’70s cinema: attenuated frame, high forehead, prominent nose. Sad, black eyes. They were the envy of the New York theater world — she the most naturally gifted actress in generations, he the most naturally gifted actor, legendary director Joe Papp their patron — until one day in May 1977, when Y was diagnosed with cancer. X’s strength of character is particularly lauded for how she took care of him during this period, but ultimately lost him. Friends and relatives say that this incident left deep scars on X. Question 5.
  • 40. Question 1. Earlier this month, X, owned by Y, opened its first standalone store in Infiniti mall in Malad, a suburb in Mumbai. The 1,000 square feet store with rose gold fittings caters to 25-26-year-old women’s western wear market with styles that are inspired by international trends, catwalks and Instagram. Like the international fast fashion brands Zara and H&M, it refreshes 10% of its collection every week by adding new pieces and phasing out 10% as well. The store comes with a selfie booth, or a large Android screen, which allows consumers to browse through the collection, click pictures and even print the picture or post it on social media sites like Facebook and share with friends on WhatsApp.
  • 43. Question 2. X Group plc is a British alternative investment management business. The company manages about US $72.3 billion (30 September 2014) and employs over 1,200 people in 14 locations worldwide and is headquartered at Riverbank House in London. The company was founded in 1783, by James X, a barrel maker. The following year the company secured the contract to supply the Royal Navy with the rum for its daily “rum tot”, a tradition under which all sailors were allocated a daily ration of rum. The company moved into rum and sugar broking, and then later expanded into other commodities such as coffee and cocoa. Throughout the nineteenth century and into the twentieth, it became a major market participant in commodity exchanges; and the firm’s twentieth century partners established the company as a broker to third parties. This venture prompted a move into financial services, which the company increasingly concentrated on. In 2000, the commodity trading companies went private with the result that X became exclusively a financial services company
  • 46. Question 3. The firm was founded by German lawyer Jürgen X in 1977 and joined by novelist/lawyer Ramón Y in 1986 (both pictured on the left). It later added a third director, Swiss lawyer Christoph Zollinger. It specializes in commercial law, trust services, investor advisory, intellectual property protection among other services. Previous to gaining worldwide attention they have worked with clients like the President of Argentina, Commerzbank and Petrobas.
  • 50. Question 4. Text for the Ad: "During the Second World War, Czechs dismantled their _____ and hid them amongst household objects so they wouldn't be confiscated and used to continue fueling the Nazi war machine. These 'parted out' _____ became symbols of hope that one day freedom would prevail and they could be put back together to reclaim their rightful home—the ____ ____."

  • 57. Question 1. In 1978, when X chose the constituency, it not only put the picturesque Y on the global map, but also gave X political rebirth. Apart from being a pivotal moment for X, this election is widely regarded for one of the defining slogans of the Indian political landscape, It was was either penned down by the party-poet Srikant Verma or Devraj Urs (disputed), and was a sharp diatribe against the opposition. The slogan is structured thus: “__ _____, ___ _______ Y, Y!”
  • 59. Indira Gandhi, Chikmagalur Ek Sherni, Sau Langoor, Chikmagalur, Chikmagalur!
  • 60. Question 2. Contrary to common perception, this was inspired by two real life events as acknowledged by the creator - “No matter how much I make up, there’s stuff in history that’s just as bad, or worse” One was a case called The Black ________. The king of Scotland invited the young Earl of Douglas to Edinburgh Castle for a feast. Then at the end of the feast, [the king's men] started pounding on a single drum. They brought out a covered plate and put it in front of the Earl and revealed it was the head of a black boar — the symbol of ______. And as soon as he saw it, he knew what it meant”. "The larger instance was the Glencoe _________. Clan MacDonald stayed with the Campbell clan overnight and the laws of hospitality supposedly applied. But the Campbells arose at midnight and did something strange.” What did these two events inspire ?
  • 62. The Red Wedding, G.R.R. Martin
  • 63. Question 3. <Pictures included> X was founded in the early 2000s by the supreme leader and it was decreed that all buildings are to be built with white marble. In 2013, X made a record in the Guinness book of records as the city with the largest number of buildings decorated with white marble (4514 million square meters). The city was built virtually from scratch, and at great expense. No other city in the former Soviet Union was showered with this much money. Broad avenues, huge plazas, stupendous buildings – we have already seen all of this proudly displayed in 50-s era Moscow and in other Soviet cities. Replete with out of scale construction and vast distances that are difficult to traverse by foot, it is the architecture aligned with the regime. It suppresses people, showing the insignificance of the individual compared to the surroundings. Ideology propaganda through art, while it seemed appropriate 70 years ago, looks strange in the modern world.

According to the law, there are certain recognized categories of hibakusha: 1) Immediate 2) Within two weeks or within 2 kms 3) Indirect 4) By birth Studs Terkel's book The Good ___ includes a conversation with two hibakusha. The postscript observes: “There is considerable discrimination in _____ against the hibakusha. It is frequently extended toward their children as well: socially as well as economically. "Not only hibakusha, but their children, are refused employment," says Mr. Kito. "There are many among them who do not want it known that they are hibakusha." Two of the most famous hibakusha are Sadako Sasaki and Tsutomu Yamaguchi. Who exactly are the hibakusha?
  • 73. Question 5. The ___ ___ was a military operation undertaken in Australia over the latter part of 1932 to address public concern over a hostile opponent running amok in the Campion district of Western Australia. The operation was conducted under the command of Major G.P.W. Meredith of the Seventh Heavy Battery of the Royal Australian Artillery, with Meredith commanding a pair of soldiers armed with two Lewis guns and 10,000 rounds of ammunition. A specialist’s account of the a particular failure of the Australian attempt goes thus: “The machine-gunners' dreams of point blank fire into serried masses of the enemy were soon dissipated. The enemy command had evidently ordered guerrilla tactics, and its unwieldy army soon split up into innumerable small units that made use of the military equipment uneconomic. A crestfallen field force therefore withdrew from the combat area after about a month.”

This classic duet was partly improvised by A at the time of recording and B, determined to show A how he would sing the duet better, got into the mood of the song and immortalized it. Legend also has it that B was upset by the fact that in the picturisation of the song, the singing competition between the two heroes was won by the one, for whom the background singing was done by A. B didn't like the fact that a classically trained singer like himself would have to lose, though only on-screen, to an untrained singer.

  • 89. Question 5. When Sylvester Stallone set out to find a central track for Rocky, he really wanted to use this song, but the 1970s British rock band denied him permission to do so. Ultimately he had to settle for Eye of the Tiger. In what can be termed as supreme irony, this song is used to train medical professionals to provide the correct number of chest compressions per minute while performing CPR. The bassline has close to 110 beats per minute, and 100–120 chest compressions per minute are recommended by the British Heart Foundation, and endorsed by the Resuscitation Council (UK). The use of this song thus has been often criticized: “Sure, it might have 100 beats per minute. But is that the message the clinician should have in her head when trying to resuscitate someone?”
