43. “(…) some of the following aspects of Barcelona: a vibrant, beautiful,
cosmopolitan city with a mild climate that attracts a seemingly
continuous stream of travellers (many of which decide to stay), an
array of great technical and business schools, talent, a ‘connected’
Spanish market that could readily be targeted if only for starters, high
smartphone penetration country-wide, an active local community
with members who very regularly meet up to share knowledge, well-connected
to the rest of the world in terms of transportation, and a
generally supportive local government.

“If nothing else, Barcelona.IO, a nonprofit community of startups that
hosts pitch days and startup fairs, is an example of Barcelona's
embrace of startup culture. In July, the organization hosted a sold out
event (…) where angel investors and business leaders met and
mingled. Still, investment in the city is limited, in spite of serving as
home base to budding companies such as eyeOS(…) and Mobbeel.

44. “In the past year, the Catalan capital has proved itself a hub for global
businesses -- online travel company eDreams ODIGEO was valued at
£945 million after going public in April, and software portal Softonic
announced 125 million monthly users (an IPO is rumoured).
"Superstars like these make Barcelona important, because they're
world leaders," says Christopher Pommerening of Active Venture
Partners. The city's appeal is partly down to Spanish government
incentives such as simplifying the visa process for entrepreneurs
outside the EU.
