5. Chapter 1 – Preparation for SelfPromoting
Your Music
Getting Started
It is not easy being an unpopular musician, but it is even harder to manage an
unpopular band. Before you even hope to get enough traction needed in order for your
band’s music to be heard, make sure you have the following things:
Specific Goals – Starting out in a big industry such as the music industry can be very
intimidating for starters. There are so much to learn, so many people to know, and so
many experiences to gain before you can succeed. This is why when starting out in the
industry, it is important to take one step at a time and not to do too many things at once
without seeing results from any of them.
Specific Audience – It is a fact that there are many types of music that can be very
difficult to sell in today’s market. But if you know who to target and hit the bull’seye,
then you may find the break that will kickoff
your promotion.
The Talent – Finally, you have to make sure you have a marketable band filled with
talented musicians. Is the band rehearsing well? Is everyone in the band confident with
their own music? The truth is, not everyone in the music industry will experience
significant success – especially those who lack the confidence in themselves.
The Name – Only bands and artists with clear identities and consistent sound will be
able to grow its audience with the possibility of developing a dedicated fan base. You
can’t risk being “just another rock band” or “hip hop artist” without having a set identity
that will separate you from the mediocre crowd. However, not all identities will be
appealing to the market at first. The only option you have is to be consistent once
you’ve found your niche and your target audience. Create stickers, posters, digital
artwork, and always make your name memorable. In time, people will begin to
recognize your brand of music when they associate certain images or art styles.
However, this doesn’t mean that your band should not be adaptable to necessary
changes in the long run. Also remember to try to be as original as you can. Even though
it is impossible today to come up with stuff that is 100% unique, it is relatively easy to
come up with your band’s version of the derivation.
The Content – Before you should focus on promotion, make sure that there is a
substantial amount of content to promote. Make sure you have high quality recorded
songs, videos, photos, and information about the band and its members. Now, you don’t
have to share all these resources at one time especially for bigger projects such as
6. music videos or press kits. Just make sure they are always secure and ready to be used
whenever required.
Discovering your music
Even if you’ve already written 10 or more songs, there’s a chance that even you still
haven’t fully discovered what your band will be in the long run. While being consistent
with your niche and your target audience is important, try to experiment as much as you
can and do not rush being loved by all your listeners. Remember that even the most
popular bands today are still experimenting with new sounds, but they still try to be
consistent with their genre and their brand.
Setting a Specific Goal
Again, being specific with your goals and taking one step at a time is extremely crucial.
There are three suitable ways for you to make your first move in selfpromotion;
have a
single, perform in a show, or have a website.
By choosing between these three, all sorts of confusion will be removed. Your band will
now have a clear direction once your objectives are set. For example, if the method you
have chosen is to have a band website, then your primary goals are to build the website
and to promote the website to get more traffic. There are many ways to attract traffic to
your band’s website using social media marketing. This will be discussed in later
chapters. What’s important now is for you to have a definite plan.
Remember to act small and humble when starting out. Do not overspend in promotional
materials or fantasize about getting a tour when you’re only just beginning. This is all
about risk management – act and make decisions that are appropriate to the current
state of the band. Smaller steps first and when you get significant results with what
you’re doing, it is easier to risk bigger campaigns such as tours, record deals, and so
on.
As with all great undertakings in life, it all begins with having a plan. By setting goals for
your band, then you’ve already done this for yourself.
Music Promotional Habit #1: Keep your list of contacts!
Never skimp on collecting contact details of people who can help you. Remember that
the entire industry is built with people, so you will need people in order to survive. You
don’t really need to act immediately once you acquired a specific contact detail. Just
hold on to them and keep in touch – who knows when they will be of great help. See the
next chapter about the people to know some of the most important types of contacts in
the music industry.

Creating a Press Kit
A press kit is a musthave
item for any musician who wishes to have a name in the
industry. It is something that you should consider as a primary objective even if it should
not be completed as soon as possible.
Here are a few things you should remember when creating a press kit:
Make sure you have finalized your artist name! An artist name is ideally easy to
remember, short, appealing, and has relevance with the music genre.
8. Plan the budget for your press kit accordingly! A professionallymade
press kit will
take around $200 to over $1,000 in investment for promotional media, demo CDs, high
quality recordings, and so on. You may also need to hire a manager or a professional
photographer for building your press kit.
Choose your best songs to include in your demo! Ideally, you should settle for only
3 or even fewer songs in your demo CD. While you can record your songs at home with
recording software, it is always better to have a professional recording company do it for
you instead.
Create an excellent band/artist logo! Aim to use logos that are simple but memorable
and impactful. You don’t have to go for over complicated stuff with lots of deep
meanings. Just give a clear hint of the concept behind you and your music.
Create a fact sheet and a writeup!
Other than the music itself, your press kit should
include relevant information about you. This includes interesting backstories from the
band members’ music history and background (including education). A fact sheet, on
the other hand, focuses on the artist’s life as a performer. It includes sales figures, sizes
of past shows, concert venues and dates, and so on. This is one of the things in your
press kit that may take time to be made interesting.
Package your press kit! A lot of artists try to invest more money on the packaging just
to make it appear unique and attractive. However, you should focus more on what’s
inside rather than the outside. Just make sure that your packaging is large, easy to
open, and durable to make it convenient for agents to handle.
