Gallup research shows 70% of the American workforce is disengaged. They say that mission and purpose driven organizations experience higher rates, but what can we do to make that higher? The answer lies in a highly sophisticated management technique called #MBSN or management by sticky notes. Tom Hood, CEO of the MACPA and Business Learning Institute shares the why and how of MBSN in this special session on "collaboration made easy. Particpation and collaboration leads to engagement which increases trust (7 X according to Gallup) and ultimately yields to the holy grail of engaged people who give you their discretionary effort. Tom provides exempts of how they have used this at the Maryland Association of CPAs and in their strategic planning work. They used this to design and facilitate the grassroots future forums during the CPA Horizons 2025 project.

I was privileged to be a senior leader in the product development team at Spotify from 2013 until 2016. I joined the company right after the adoption of the now well-known "Spotify Model." As a Tribe Lead and then Alliance Lead, I helped in the models' evolution as the company grew to over 800 developers across five offices on two continents. My time at Spotify was instructive in many ways, and since leaving, I have adopted the lessons I learned as a CTO in multiple companies. While the squads/chapters/tribes/guilds model as a method for scaling agile development is what people focus on, the ideas and values that inspired that model are valuable and applicable across a wide range of organizations. I share those ideas and values in this talk—their application at Spotify and how I have applied them in different organizations since.

Slides from the sixth workshop with the children and staff at Lubuto Library at Ngwerere in Lusaka, Zambia. We started our second week with a workshop focusing on sound. A brief overview of analog vs. digital sound recording was delivered. Then we worked on recording, editing and exporting sound in Audacity. Finally, we ended with a demonstration of the MakeyMakey banana piano. The eight days of workshops I am delivering are funded by a USAID/WorldVision grant from the All Children Reading Challenge. In May 2011, I thought about experimenting a new concept to get things done in the L&D space: engage different experts to deliver outcomes, with no hierarchical reporting, no minimum required contributions and no monetary reward. On paper it looked like it was doomed to fail. By end the end of 2012 the results were mind blowing and kept improving in 2013, so in March 2014, I thought to extend this concept of 'circles' to drive employee engagement and develop a relevant employee value proposition for our staff. In Oct 2014, I've been told this may be called 'holacracy' - one of the latest management trend - an approach where we "grant special protection to employees to experiment with ideas. It is governance of the organization, through the people, for the purpose. It enables the organization to find and express its deepest creative capacity." Presented at Organisational Learning Consortium, Sydney 26 November 2014. For all of Agile’s strengths, it’s not inherently a user centered method. We’re challenged to find ways to integrate UX into agile development, and the Design Sprint or Sprint Zero has become an accepted way to do this. But Sprint Zero isn’t the solution. It’s a workaround. It makes design a different kind of sprint, and silos UX away from the work of the “real” team. This isn’t even an agile way to work, and it’s not the best route to designing excellent user experiences. We need a revolution.
