This chapter is a brief consideration of typical input and output devices used with
PLCs.
2.1 Input devices
ď‚· The term sensor is used for an input device that provides a usable output in
response to a specified physical input (Thermocouple).
ď‚· The following are some of the more common terms used to define the performance
of sensors
o Accuracy: is the extent to which the value indicated by a measurement
system or element might be wrong.
o Range: The range of variable of system is the limits between which the
input can vary.
o Response Time: It is the time taken by the sensor to reach and settle down
to the steady-state value.
o Sensitivity: The sensitivity indicates how much the output of an instrument
system or system element changes when the quantity being measured
changes by a given amount, i.e. the ratio output/input.
o Stability: Its ability to give the same output when used to measure a
constant input over a period of time.
o Repeatability: the ability of a measurement system to give the same value
for repeated measurements of the same value of a variable.
o Reliability: the probability that it will operate to an agreed level of
performance, for a specified period, subject to specified environmental
conditions.
2
The following are examples of some of the commonly used PLC input devices and their sensors.
2.1.1 Limit Switches
ď‚· Switches are available with normally open (NO) or normally closed (NC) contacts or can
be configured as either by choice of the relevant contacts.
ď‚· The term limit switch is used for a switch which is used to detect the presence or
passage of a moving part. It can be actuated by a cam, roller or lever.
Limit switches actuated by: (a) lever, (b) roller, (c) cam
2.1.2 Proximity switches
ď‚· Proximity switches are used to detect the presence of an item without making contact.
ď‚· A proximity switch that can be used with metallic and non-metallic objects is the capacitive
proximity switch.
Reed switch
2.1.3 Photoelectric sensors and switches
a. Transmissive type b. Reflective type
Photoelectric sensors
ď‚· In transmissive type the object breaks a beam of light and stops it reaching the detector.
ď‚· In reflective type the object reflects a beam of light onto the detector.
3
2.1.4 Encoders
An encoder is used for providing a digital output as a result of angular or linear displacement.
ď‚· An increment encoder detects changes in angular or linear displacement from some
datum position.
ď‚· An absolute encoder gives the actual angular or linear position.
2.1.5 Position/displacement sensors
ď‚· The term position sensor is used for a sensor that gives a measure of the distance
between a reference point and the current location of the target, a displacement sensor
being one that gives a measure of the distance between the present position of the
target and the previously recorded position.
2.1.6 Temperature sensors
 A simple form of temperature sensor which can be used to provide an on–off signal
when a particular temperature is reached is the bimetal element. The device is not very
accurate but is commonly used in domestic central heating thermostats.
ď‚· Another form of temperature sensor is the resistive temperature detector (RTD). The
electrical resistance of metals or semiconductors changes with temperature. The
change, however, is non-linear. The output of circuit is an analogue signal which is a
measure of the temperature.
2.1.8 Other Sensors
Pressure Sensors, Liquid Level Detectors, Fluid Flow Sensors.
Smart sensors (integrated with buffering and conditioning circuitry)

2.2 Output devices
The output ports of a PLC are of the relay type or optoisolator with transistor or triac types
depending on the devices connected to them which are to be switched on or off.
Outputs are specified as being of relay type, transistor type or triac type
1. With the relay type, the signal from the PLC output is used to operate a relay and is able
to switch currents of the order of a few amperes in an external circuit. The relay not
only allows small currents to switch much larger currents but also isolates the PLC from
the external circuit. Relays are, however, relatively slow to operate. Relay outputs are
suitable for a.c. and d.c. switching. They can withstand high surge currents and voltage
transients.
2. The transistor type of output uses a transistor to switch current through the external
circuit. This gives a considerably faster switching action. It is, however, strictly for d.c.
switching and is destroyed by overcurrent and high reverse voltage. As a protection,
either a fuse or built-in electronic protection is used. Optoisolators are used to provide
isolation.
3. Triac outputs, with optoisolators for isolation, can be used to control external loads
which are connected to the a.c. power supply. It is strictly for a.c. operation and is very
easily destroyed by overcurrent. Fuses are virtually always included to protect such
outputs.

PLC input and output devices

  • 1. 1 This chapter is a brief consideration of typical input and output devices used with PLCs. 2.1 Input devices ď‚· The term sensor is used for an input device that provides a usable output in response to a specified physical input (Thermocouple). ď‚· The following are some of the more common terms used to define the performance of sensors o Accuracy: is the extent to which the value indicated by a measurement system or element might be wrong. o Range: The range of variable of system is the limits between which the input can vary. o Response Time: It is the time taken by the sensor to reach and settle down to the steady-state value. o Sensitivity: The sensitivity indicates how much the output of an instrument system or system element changes when the quantity being measured changes by a given amount, i.e. the ratio output/input. o Stability: Its ability to give the same output when used to measure a constant input over a period of time. o Repeatability: the ability of a measurement system to give the same value for repeated measurements of the same value of a variable. o Reliability: the probability that it will operate to an agreed level of performance, for a specified period, subject to specified environmental conditions.
  • 2. 2 The following are examples of some of the commonly used PLC input devices and their sensors. 2.1.1 Limit Switches ď‚· Switches are available with normally open (NO) or normally closed (NC) contacts or can be configured as either by choice of the relevant contacts. ď‚· The term limit switch is used for a switch which is used to detect the presence or passage of a moving part. It can be actuated by a cam, roller or lever. Limit switches actuated by: (a) lever, (b) roller, (c) cam 2.1.2 Proximity switches ď‚· Proximity switches are used to detect the presence of an item without making contact. ď‚· A proximity switch that can be used with metallic and non-metallic objects is the capacitive proximity switch. Reed switch 2.1.3 Photoelectric sensors and switches a. Transmissive type b. Reflective type Photoelectric sensors ď‚· In transmissive type the object breaks a beam of light and stops it reaching the detector. ď‚· In reflective type the object reflects a beam of light onto the detector.
  • 3. 3 2.1.4 Encoders An encoder is used for providing a digital output as a result of angular or linear displacement. ď‚· An increment encoder detects changes in angular or linear displacement from some datum position. ď‚· An absolute encoder gives the actual angular or linear position. 2.1.5 Position/displacement sensors ď‚· The term position sensor is used for a sensor that gives a measure of the distance between a reference point and the current location of the target, a displacement sensor being one that gives a measure of the distance between the present position of the target and the previously recorded position. 2.1.6 Temperature sensors ď‚· A simple form of temperature sensor which can be used to provide an on–off signal when a particular temperature is reached is the bimetal element. The device is not very accurate but is commonly used in domestic central heating thermostats. ď‚· Another form of temperature sensor is the resistive temperature detector (RTD). The electrical resistance of metals or semiconductors changes with temperature. The change, however, is non-linear. The output of circuit is an analogue signal which is a measure of the temperature. 2.1.8 Other Sensors Pressure Sensors, Liquid Level Detectors, Fluid Flow Sensors. Smart sensors (integrated with buffering and conditioning circuitry)
  • 4. 4 2.2 Output devices The output ports of a PLC are of the relay type or optoisolator with transistor or triac types depending on the devices connected to them which are to be switched on or off. Outputs are specified as being of relay type, transistor type or triac type 1. With the relay type, the signal from the PLC output is used to operate a relay and is able to switch currents of the order of a few amperes in an external circuit. The relay not only allows small currents to switch much larger currents but also isolates the PLC from the external circuit. Relays are, however, relatively slow to operate. Relay outputs are suitable for a.c. and d.c. switching. They can withstand high surge currents and voltage transients. 2. The transistor type of output uses a transistor to switch current through the external circuit. This gives a considerably faster switching action. It is, however, strictly for d.c. switching and is destroyed by overcurrent and high reverse voltage. As a protection, either a fuse or built-in electronic protection is used. Optoisolators are used to provide isolation. 3. Triac outputs, with optoisolators for isolation, can be used to control external loads which are connected to the a.c. power supply. It is strictly for a.c. operation and is very easily destroyed by overcurrent. Fuses are virtually always included to protect such outputs. Relay used as an output device
