Due to the internet, the traditional way we all do sales and marketing has changed significantly.
And it is most likely the way you are going about marketing your business, is all wrong.

Here's a quick look at my mood board, as to why I do what I do. If you don’t have a mood board, they are great to help you with your goals, and well worth a try
Initially, I was the black sheep of a family of it geeks, moving away from a career in IT, towards one in sports and fitness, where I trained the celebs and royalty,
however never straying too far, I developed several computer fitness and analysis programs.
After not too long, I re-joined the fold, working for Sun Alliance and RBS as developer, project manager and then Programme manager.
My team delivering the first online life insurance platform.
Moooving on I started Smart cow, initially as a price comparison website, placing thousands of google adds every day,
then building websites and finally, after realising that websites are almost pointless unless they can actually be found, I moved on to helping business website be found online, through full digital marketing.
Now the goal is to build Smart Cow digital marketing, with Smart Training (delivering digital marketing online courses) and Smart Productions (providing video production as 80% of web content is consumed by video). The goal is to be in a position where we can sell in 5 years

As mentioned, The internet has changed the way we buy and sell physical products and services, whether Business to buisness or business to consumer.
As recent as 10 years ago, salesmen would push their products on to their unsuspecting victims. And tell them, of all the features, and why they need to buy a product or service, but with no comparisons.
However the Internet has changed all that. The salesman is now generally the last person in the process.

You are right BNI is fantastic at getting leads and this is done by referrals and in all honesty referal leads from someone who recommends you at BNI are a better quality than the initial lead you will get through digital marketing. The issue is reach, your referal network is limited and not working all the time, which is perfect for the majority or our members. However for firms ambitious to grow much larger Digital marketing compliments this and is the way forward for expansion, it is working for you all the time and also has an almost unlimited reach.
Phil - I thought digital marketing was social media, is this not the case then?
Yup, social media marketing is only one small, but important, cog in the marketing wheel. Organic social media, i.e. Your day to day post are generally most effective at brand awareness. Paid Social media can be much more targeted in the lead acquisition. But as you can see once you have the contact details, you also have a lot of work to gain and nurture clients
