How Does Genetics Affect The Achievement Of Food Security...
7.1 Introduction
Throughout the report the focus has been on how genetics can contribute to the achievement of food
security in the developing world through crop improvement. However, there have been other non
scientific factors involved in the implementation of the science in the development context. For certain
examples such as the use of genetic science to increase the productivity in terms of yield increase of a
crop (chapter 4), it could be argued that the non scientific factors such as governance and investment
are equally important as science for the achievement of food security as one would not work without
the other. Some of the non scientific factors mentioned were present in more than one chapter and
therefore formed a key theme ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He co leads a research group which investigates the genomics and evolution of the plants and animals
with a focus on crops and has experience working on projects in collaboration with developing
countries (recently in Ethiopia).
I have therefore looked at the potential of genetics to meet various aspects of the SDG goal, and used
that analysis to identify a number of non scientific factors associated with the potential of the science
to make a significant impact. I have then, in turn, used that analysis to design a semi structured
interview with Professor Heslop Harrison. This chapter will therefore discuss the various themes that
have emerged including an analysis of those of the chapters, along with insight provided by an expert
in the field of agricultural plant science.
FACTORS THEMES
The factors and themes in this chapter have come from the issues identified in the conclusion of the
various chapters, as well as targets 2.a, 2b.c and 2.c of SDG 2. These factors/ themes are therefore the
outcome of my thoughts and the work carried out so far in the project.
7.3 ECONOMIC POLITICAL FACTORS
1. Governance Investments
Target 2.a focuses on the importance of investing in agriculture in terms of rural infrastructure,
agricultural research and technology (including gene banks) to increase agricultural productivity
capacity, especially in least developed countries. This target is

The Power Of A Nuclear Reactor
There are many ways to create power. Many of the modern power production systems are very costly
to run. Some create power in ways that pollute the earth, and others use renewable resources. With
new and upcoming ways to create power, prices for power are dropping. Nuclear Energy is a rising
way to create large amounts of efficient power.
A long process goes into creating Nuclear energy. Uranium is the product, found in most rocks, that
powers the nuclear reactors. The uranium then goes through a process known as nuclear fission. As
uranium breaks down or decays, it produces heat inside the earth s crust. A similar process generates
heat inside a nuclear reactor (Emirates, par. 5). The uranium then goes through a process called
nuclear fission. Nuclear fission is the process of splitting a nucleus in two. Inside the uranium fuel
pellets, there are millions of uranium nuclei (Emirates, par.6). Many people believe that uranium is the
only way power is made in a nuclear reactor. But there are many forms of power that come out of
nuclear fission. The nuclear fusion then heats water to a boiling point to create steam. The steam in
turn, spins large turbine blades that drive electrical generators (Nuclear, par. 11). During that whole
process, multiple ways of creating power are output. A great output would be the production of
hydrogen. Hydrogen is a good source of power for various reasons. Although hydrogen is abundant in
the universe, it must be produced from

Why Is John Proctor Hung In The Crucible
The Story Of Witchcraft
In the story the crucible (1952), Arthur Miller, John Proctor was the one most responsible for the
witchcraft hysteria in the crucible because John Proctor knew beforehand bud didn t spoke out until
toward the end where he confessed but chooses the route to be hung. Why did John Proctor toward the
end chooses to be hung? Was John Proctor really the witch who started this hysteria? Briefly, John
Proctor was the one most responsible for the witchcraft hysteria in the crucible .
In The Crucible John Proctor knew he(John Proctor) and Abigail Williams were the witches who
caused the witchcraft hysteria because John Proctor and Abigail Williams had an affair and none of
them wanted to speak about it because they will be charged with adultery and witchcraft. In scene 3 in
the court the judges almost found out about their affair so John Proctor lied to not get charged with
adultery and abigail lied too, to not get the secret out. Furthermore , John Proctor and Abigail

What Is The Relationship Between Morality And Morality
Freedom and morality is connected to each other. We have freedom to do things and to decide things
for ourselves. But morality teaches us to choose from the right and the wrong behavior. Morality is
concerned about the values, conducts, and principles of a certain person while freedom is being able to
make your own decisions and getting it done. These two have a big relationship with each other
because they must be given importance in our lives. What is the deeper relationship between freedom
and morality? And what can be done to have them both? Morality falls under the concept of dictum
which tells us, to do good and to avoid evil. It can be observed in our everyday living. We can see it
even in the simplest act that a person is doing. For example, a student decides to study and take a
review at night. Morality comes in because that student has a choice and she has chosen to do the
good thing rather than doing other things. Morality and ethics both focuses on the human conduct. It
deals with the standards of right doings and the wrong ones. But there is also a big difference between
the two. Morality talks about the right and wrong doings while ethics are the moral principles.
Meaning ethics is can be considered under morality. It is like a step where a person chooses from
doing the right or wrong thing. When she already had a decision and she stands for it, ethics will come
on its way. The moral ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We always have the freedom to do things but we often forget about choosing the right from the wrong
doings. We become selfish that we only think of our own good and pleasure. In that case, freedom
leads us to different paths in our lives. It can slowly destroy us and the plans we have for the future.
So it only means that with freedom, we should have the responsibility. We should possess the
responsibility to be morally aware of the things and the choices that we will pick up and make for

The Diet And Foraging Behavior
Diet and Foraging Behavior
Capuchins are generally frugivorous with fleshy fruits making up 53.9% of their diet. The other half
of their diet is made up of 16% seeds, 13.9 % corn, 11.1% flowers, 6.3 % leaves, and 1.5% roots.
These primates forage together in large groups; and have a preference for fleshy fruits is thought to be
a way of eliminating competition for food, as there is evidence that other species avoid the fruits
capuchins eat (Galetti and Pedroni 1994). While chimpanzees and capuchins share the diet of seeds,
leaves, and fruits; the diet of the chimp is incredibly variable. Although primarily frugivorous their
diet includes: bark, resin, stems, pith, insects, eggs, and occasionally soil (Goodall 1986).The usually
highly social chimpanzee prefers to forage alone with males spending most of their day foraging for
food and females spending more than half of their day resting. There is also evidence of groups of
chimpanzees hunting and eating various large mammals including: bushpigs, colobus monkeys, and
baboons (Boesch Boesch 1989).
Capuchins and chimpanzees both utilize tools in order to obtain foods. Capuchins have utilized anvil
stone tool technology, in which a nut is placed on a hard surface (anvil) and pounded upon using a
large stone (hammer) until the shell cracks (Fragaszy 2004).On the other hand, chimpanzees not only
use the hammer and anvil technology, they also create their own tools. Chimpanzees have been known
to use sticks, stems, and

Parallel Myths
There are over 4,000 religions in the world today. How can there possibly be that many different
versions of creation? Because of the possibility of parallel myths. This essay will look to The
Thoughts of Brahma, Brahma is Lonely, The King, the Hawk, and the Pigeon, as well as Gautama and
the Elephant. Analysis of these short stories and comparison to basic Christian and non theistic views
will show the similarity and how close to the truth the selections could be. The Thoughts of Brahma
appear to be very similar to the Christian Genesis 1. In The Thoughts of Brahma, the Hindu god
Brahma created the world, similar to how the Christian Lord created Earth. Both stories begin in

In the story, the King Vrishadarbha was asked by a pigeon for protection from a hawk. The hawk in
the story represents temptation, as it tries to get to its prey by any means. The hawk explains that if the
king is so honorable, he would either give the pigeon to the hawk or let the hawk eat him. The king, in
return, kept to his promise and gave his own flesh in place of the pigeon. In the end, it was unveiled
that this was a test from Indra, the leader of devas, and the king was restored and brought to heaven
for being honorable and keeping his word. While it may not be an absolute truth, it is much more
likely that good things will follow people who do good deeds and keep promises given. This was by

The Theory Of Evolution In Aimee Bender s The Rememberer
The theory of evolution is a pivotal idea that influences the way that all species are seen, including
humans. The theory of evolution was established by Charles Darwin, and it presents the idea that
species adapt to fit new environments and changes can occur over time. If evolution allows organisms
to adjust over time to adapt to their environment, couldn t the opposite situation occur? The idea of
devolution is covered by Aimee Bender in her engaging story The Rememberer . Bender relates her
story to the idea of devolution by using her lover Ben to constantly devolve into different animals
throughout the story. The story begins with Ben being a human and immediately he devolves to
different animals. She reveals how the relationship was with Ben when he was human , and how it
evolved to the tragedy that it became. The more Ben devolves the weaker their relationship becomes,
until Ben completely disappears. Bender uses symbolism and the idea of devolution to illustrate the
physical and mental deterioration of a loved one, and as an outlet to ease her grief.
The use of symbolism is visible throughout the entire story. Bender uses different animals as stages to
her physical and mental deterioration. Bender is happy and contempt when her lover is human
however when her relationship takes a turn for the worse, she begins depicting Ben as different
animals devolving to a meaningless being. Bender has a tornado of emotions towards Ben but it is
evident that she truly loves him. When their relationship weakens Bender becomes dismal and
heartbroken, and in order to deal with her sorrow she uses symbolism to depict her lover devolving
with their relationship. It is clear when she is describing Ben, she begins with an ape, to monkey, to
turtle, and finally a salamander. She devolves Ben to an animal based on his significance in their
relationship. The symbolism is present from the beginning but gains significance when she states,
When I go to the kitchen, I peer in the pan and see he s some kind of salamander now. He s small
(Bender 2). When Ben becomes the salamander he is practically gone from the relationship, and is
when her mental and physical deterioration is at its peak. The symbolism also plays a separate

Frankenstein Literary Analysis Essay
Frankenstein Literary Analysis Friends will determine the direction and quality of your life.
Loneliness is a battle that all people will once face at a certain point in their life; it is how they handle
it that determines the outcome of that battle. In Mary Shelley s Frankenstein loneliness is the most
significant and prevailing theme throughout the entire novel. Shelley takes her readers on a wild
journey that shows how loneliness can end in tragedy. Robert Walton is the first character introduced
that is lonely. I desire the company of a man who could sympathize with me, whose eyes would reply
to mine. (Shelley 10) Walton tries to mend his loneliness by writing letters to his sister, but it is just
not enough. Communicating ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was dark when I awoke; I felt cold also, and half frightened as it were instinctively, finding myself
so desolate (Shelley 68) For the monster it is the constant rejection and its abandonment by
Frankenstein at birth that leads it to loneliness and extreme anxiety. In all probability, the creature was
reaching out, as a small child does to their mother, but his ugly appearance only frightened Victor into
running away (Coulter) The main reason for its rejection is the monster s outward appearance. The
rejection by humans in general and specifically by its creator only increases the monsters feelings of
loneliness, emotional abandonment, and, as a result, anger. The loneliness of the Creature leads it to
unbelievable acts of violence, the first one being the killing of Frankenstein s youngest brother
William. The monster describes its terrible act in detail: I gazed on my victim, and my heart swelled
with exultation and hellish triumph: clapping my hands, I exclaimed, I too can create desolation; my
enemy is not impregnable; this death will carry despair to him, and a thousand other miseries shall
torment and destroy him (Shelley 97). Shelley is trying to teach the world a lesson by illustrating that
the monster is not just a scientific project, the monster is a living emotional being. Frankenstein even
further rejects the

Lithium Ion Batteries And Its Effects
Lithium ion batteries were introduced commercially during the early 1990 s as the desire for smaller
and more lightweight rechargeable batteries grew with the increased demand for the improvement of
portable electronic devices (Yoshino, 2012). Prior to this there were commercially available
rechargeable batteries already on the market, predominately in the form of lead acid (PbA), Nickel
Cadmium (NiC) and Nickel Metal hydride (NiMH) batteries. The development of the Lithium ion (Li
ion) battery began due to the knowledge of lithium s low redox reaction rate and high energy to
weight ratio (Wu, 2015), which, it was believed would make Li ion batteries a good option for
introducing smaller, more energy rich batteries to the growing market. ... Show more content on

Through the continuous research and development in the chemistry of Li ion batteries the components
have been extensively studied in an attempt to find the best materials to ensure a battery with a high
energy capacity and safety features. There are a wide range of cathode materials available for use in a
Li ion battery. Those with a good level of stability at high temperatures, insolubility in the electrolyte
and good electrical conductivity (Chakrabarti, 2008) being the ideal choice for the cathode. In general
cathodes consist of lithium metal oxides and these layered or intercalated oxides containing nickel,
cobalt and manganese are those which have been studied most extensively. Both cobalt and nickel
have a high voltage, making these metals excellent options for the cathode, however, the availability
of cobalt is quite limited. Manganese is a low cost substitution but it has limited cycling behaviour,
hence mixtures of these metals are combined to provide a cathode with a high thermal threshold, good
rate capabilities and availability with low toxicity and low cost (Claus, 2008). Recent studies have
highlighted polyoxyanion structures, such as Lithium Iron Phosphate, as options for the cathode
material, providing high electrochemical performances as well as nontoxicity (Chakrabarti, 2008). As
with cathode materials, there are many options for the material of the anode, with each providing
different advantages. The Anode requires a high and reversible

Petrol Station Scene Analysis
In the Petrol Station scene, William Shakespeare s important theme of violence is amplified and
discussed through Baz Luhrmann s filmic interpretation. The theme of conflict between the
Montagues and the Capulets is a constant and crucial idea throughout the play. Baz Luhrmann has
highlighted the traditional Shakespearean language by modifying the setting to a modern context,
therefore the audience is able to relate to the text. Furthermore, the setting choice of a petrol station
provides the film with the ability to effectively enhance the dramatic language revealed in the play.
Irony and contrast are also really essential in drawing the audience s attention to the violence in
Romeo and Juliet. Tybalt states, What, drawn, and talk of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The relentless and dangerous feud between the Montagues and Capulets is elaborated in Romeo +
Juliet through the contrast in tone, speed and style of music when these two different parties are
introduced. The Montagues are introduced with is light and airy music, however, the music is altered
to a heavy western style when the Capulets enter the scene. The musical elements create anticipation
among the audience as they foreshadow the imminent fight. Furthermore, the distinctive difference in
race between the Latino Capulet boys and Anglo Saxon Montague boys represents and symbolises the
conflict between the two houses. Reinforcing the ongoing war between the Montagues and Capulets,
Baz Luhrmann has applied corresponding camera shots of the two contrasting family crests which are
opposite primary colours. Therefore, Luhrmann makes reference to the conflict theme exploited in
Shakespeare s work. (link) Baz Luhrmann has successfully enhanced the audience s appreciation of
Shakespearean text in the scene Death on a Summer s Day. Mercutio is a dominate and opinionated

Imagery In The Black Cat
Edgar Allan Poe who wrote The Black Cat along with a bunch of other literary works is naturally a
master at creating imagery as well as a certain mood that he wants his readers to get into their minds.
The mood of this story would definitely be fright and uneasiness, Poe develops this mood by adding
certain characters, events, places, and describing words to the story. Examples of these would be the
black cat, murders, the cellar in the old building, and words such as swooning to bring certain effects
into the scenes. I took from my waistcoat pocket a pen knife, opened it, grasped the poor beast by the

Reasons For Police Brutality
As recent incidents of police brutality plague our nation toward minority groups, especially that of
African Americans, the question asked by many is if such deadly force necessary, and what other
actions could have led to a better outcome? Although our primary thought is to blame police officers
for death, we must realize that sometimes deadly action is necessary and anyone put in a similar
situation would act the same way. According to the U.S Supreme Court in the 1985 case, Tennessee vs
Garner, police force can only be used when, [the] suspect is a significant threat to officer or others.
Later, in the case of Graham vs. Connor, the Supreme Court ruled that officers who use force must be
judged on the totality of circumstances and a standard of objective reasonableness. Force must be
judged from the perspective of a reasonable officer on the scene, rather than with the 20/20 vision of
hindsight; however, this does not excuse police brutality, and officers must face penalties for taking
someone s life. Cases such as, Eric Garner, Michael Brown, and Tamir Rice illustrate when police
need to be punished for their actions and be held accountable for violence against citizens. Although
clearly outlined for what would be a just reason for necessary force, many cases that involved police
brutality can be blamed on tactics that relate to broken windows and a need for different policies and
methods. To begin with, many incidents to police brutality occur because of lack of

Decision Making Decision Analysis
In chapter 12, the book offered 7 strategies to improve decision making efforts. These strategies were
broken in to two separate groups, the first three are broad sweeping changes, and the last four are
techniques to improve decisions we are making. Managers are measured on the decisions that they are
making. A good manager will know what it takes to make sound, and reasonable decisions. Decisions
define who we are, and they can have profound effects on others, so we must choose wisely when it
comes to the final result. The first strategy, using decision analysis tools, states that we must rely on
procedures to make decisions. A good example of this would be buying a car, we must weigh the
financial obligations with the need for the new ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is the process of using one or more lessons learned to debias our thought process. Tough
decisions can be made when we are faced with similar problems that have a similar outcome.
Focusing on one problem by itself can lead to us only focusing on one aspect of a decision, and
nothing else. Again, this is a trap, and the more we see, the more we can make informed decisions.
Strategy five is take an outsiders view. This states that an outsiders view tends to be less biased and
more generalized, therefore the decisions are somewhat easier. A good example is when we assume
that we can do something better than the last person, only to be surprised that we cannot. Strategy six
is understand bias in others. It is a fact that as leaders we must work with others that make decisions.
We must analyze past decisions, and try to find better ways to do things in the workplace. Leveraging
things like comparisons, estimation, and prediction can all help make more sound decisions. Strategy
seven is make wiser and more ethical decisions. A simple example of this is when a company forces a
manager to look at capabilities over a stereotype, therefore eliminating any bias toward a specific
person or persons. This can lead to better performing staff, and more work

A statement that stuck out to me was that people are more important than things. This is an idea that
seems to have been innate for me. Since I was young, I always cared a lot about the people in my life,
and that has translated to how I am now. I value friendships so much. I believe that yes, you have your
family and they should always be there and support you, but having friends creates such more stable
foundation in the relationships that you have. You can make a lot of money and buy whatever you
want, but money does not equate happiness. I appreciate the people who are in my life and all the
experiences we have shared together, which I will continue to reminisce about and keep forever.
Money or things could not give me all those experiences. Sometimes I feel like people are so driven
by their need for a sense of achievement and wealth/power that they push people away and give up
any chance of building their friendships and enjoying the fruits of life that you can only get through
your interaction with people. These people just end up alone, and that is something I do not want to

Christian Theism In A New Hope And A New Hope
What would you think is the most loved and cherished movies of all time? If you asked most people
Star Wars would be very high on that list of most beloved movies of all time, and I would personally
agree. Despite what you think of these movies there is obviously a message behind each of these
movies that teach the audience a lesson beyond the watching of the movies. The original trilogy of
Star Wars models an almost perfect example of Christian theism. Obviously, we should start looking at
the first movie of the trilogy, A New Hope , to find the similarities between Star Wars and Christian
theism. Luke Skywalker is introduces to the audience as the protagonist that wants to accomplish
memorable deeds in his young life. He wants to do good things for everyone, and that is the first
parallel is, the tangible good and evil. There are two sides of the Force in the Star Wars universe, a
light side and a dark side, or in other words good and evil. On the light side you are supposed to be
selfless, loyal, and responsible. The dark side on the other hand is all about selfishness, destruction of
relationships, and getting others to do what you want for you. In the theistic worldview good is what
God deems it to be, loving your neighbor, giving to the poor, and following the set rules of God. Evil
is whatever goes against God, including hating other, envy, and getting what you want at the expense
of others. Someone needs to save people from the destruction that evil brings into

Throughout history, dancing has become a part of the world from many reasons. A specific date and
time could not distinguish when dancing became a part of the human race. Nevertheless, in history,
there were dissimilar paintings and carvings of movements, which depicted a form of dancing. In the
modern period, dancing is recognized for entertainment. In the ancient era, the Greeks believed in
having a great time and celebrating. They also enjoyed music and dance as their form of
entertainment. However, this paper will discuss information on dancing in the ancient era and how it
was vital for tradition, spiritual gatherings, and apart of social events.

Each event sometimes have a different dance or ritual. In the ancient Greek period, everyone had to
worship their god and obey what they say. If they were not obeyed, they would be punished. This
period was drastically different from the modern period. However, the modern period has adapted
several similar things. For instance, many people have specific dances for special occasions, such as
weddings. There are other dances for worship, such praise dancing in the modern time. There are also
dances in the modern time period for social celebrations. For example, graduations. When a family is
celebrating their graduation, most of the time there is music, family, and fun. They do certain line
dances that are either older or present of that time. This is what makes the modern period and ancient
period very similar, but different in many ways.
Nevertheless, the ancient Greek have many ways of doing things. They had their own way of
worshipping, celebrating, and mourning through dancing alone. From the beginning of the movements
that were painted on the carved items, allowed dance to lead a pathway to the ancient Greek who put
those movements into action. Although they had stipulations on the dances through gender, they still

The Benefits Of Genetic Counseling
What is genetic counseling? What is a genetic counselor? Those questions and more are some things I
remember thinking about in my sophomore year chemistry class. I was so intrigued, yet I had no idea
what any of it meant. At the time, I had no idea how common they were, and just how much genetics
advanced every day while I was clueless.
Our genes are what make us who we are. Humans share 99.5% of our DNA with each other. That
means that every piece of DNA that makes us different is only .5% of our total DNA. A nucleus is a
large organelle of a cell that holds almost all of the cell s DNA (Tortora, Grabowski). In the nucleus of
every human cell, DNA is tightly packaged into a structure called a chromosome (U.S. National
Library of Medicine). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By definition, genetics is a term that refers to the study of genes and the role genes play inheritance:
the way traits and conditions are passed down from parent to offspring. Genetics help families and

inherited and what to do about these diseases. (National Human Genome Research Institute). These
diseases are caused by mistakes in DNA, or mutations. Genetic counselors use different tests to find
these mistake, diagnose disease, and help patients treat and cope with their

What Is A Special Experience Essay
I woke up in the middle of a what seems to be a forest. Careful observation might tell me that
something about this forest seems odd compared to the forests that I have seen and perhaps allow me
to think more clearly about the situation. But I wasn t able to, as the memory of what happened just
moment ago came back to me.
...
I was sitting in class as the students one by one walked to the teacher s podium and got their abilities
checked.
Special abilities or traits came into existence about a millennium ago and by now everyone was
already used to them. During the last year of high school, the people used a special stone, which came
into existence along with the abilities, to unlock or activate the abilities in said students.

doesn t seem like they feel anything unusual. Am I the only one feeling these tremors?
Hey, teach, isn t the ground moving?
An earthquake? But I don t feel anything like that at all.
The tremors get stronger, making me lose balance and fall to the ground.
What s happening?
The teacher is trying to tell me something, but I can t hear her properly over all this noise of the
earthquake.
A crack opens up in the floor beneath me and I see all darkness through it. Impossible. We re on the

Use Of Foreshadowing In William Goldman s The Princess Bride
William Goldman the author of The Princess Bride uses the foreshadowing technique anticipation
both within the story and in his asides to create an edge of your seat reading experience. The concept
of foreshadowing can be seen in three areas of the book love, pain and the interjections of Goldman.
In the first chapter of the book when Buttercup is seventeen, she and Wesley declare their love to one
another followed by the immediate departure of Wesley with these parting words I ll send for you
soon. Believe me (64). Buttercup eagerly awaits the return of Wesley and is devastated when she hears
of his death after a year of waiting. When she finally meets Wesley again she is twenty one. Later on

One of my theories, he said somewhat later, is that pain involves anticipation (259). Count Rugen says
this to Wesley in the Zoo of Death before leaving Wesley with the machine that had just made the wild
dog scream. Even the way the Count says it to Wesley by pausing creates anticipation. Wesley resides
on the fifth floor of the Zoo of Death, the one Humperdink left the empty in hopes of someday finding
something worthy, something as dangerous and powerful as he was(...)so he kept the great cage of the
fifth level always in readiness (75). Prince Humperdink anticipated a monster worthy of filling the
fifth level. Westley occupies the fifth level for about three months enduring all methods of torture
from Count Rugen. Wesley knows almost as soon as he arrives in the Zoo of Death that he will die
there, and he does at the hands of Prince

Siddhartha By Hermann Hesse, Siddhartha Essay
In the short story Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse, Siddhartha, the protagonist of the story was led on a
journey to reach enlightenment. Through his many realizations occurring in stages and phases,
Siddhartha experienced emotional, mental and physical changes. These stages marked the journey
Siddhartha underwent, and the destined metamorphism developed as he followed the path of
enlightenment.
In Siddhartha s first phase, Siddhartha, a wealthy Brahmin found that even though everyone loved
him, he could not bring himself joy and please himself (Hesse). This discontent was spurred by the
fact that the wise Brahmins had shared the majority and the best of their wisdom with him; yet, he was
not satisfied nor did this quench his thirst for knowledge but only fueled it (Hesse). Questions arose,
about sacrifices, happiness and Atman, did he who possessed so much wisdom live a blessed life
(Hesse)? At this moment in Siddhartha s life, he was without peace and he wanted to find answers to
these many questions. Focused and hellbent on the journey to enlightenment, Siddhartha made an
audacious decision to go to the Samanas [and] become a Samana (Hesse). Through hours of an
impasse between Siddharth and his father, his father finally agreed to let Siddhartha continue his life
journey that began with becoming a Samana. Through this phase, Siddhartha learned he was
unsatisfied with practices such as sacrificing, and that he had already achieved the wisdom obtainable

Racial Tension and The Declaration of Independence
The past is never dead. It s not even past. Requiem of a Nun by William Faulkner. In a speech given
by commander in chief, president Barack Obama he uses this quote as an example to describe the
racial situation that plagues contemporary America. Over two hundred years ago a document was
signed promising no guaranteeing that every man was entitled to life, liberty and the pursuit of
happiness. This document found that it was self evident, that all men were created equal and that they
are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights (life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness).

Essay on Hypochondriasis as A Mental Disorder
Hypochondriasis as A Mental Disorder
Headache = Tumor. Cough = Tuberculosis. Mole = Skin Cancer. Such is the thought process of a
hypochodriac. As defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual IV (DSM IV), hypochondriasis is
an unrealistic interpretation of one s bodily sensations as abnormal, leading to the fear and belief that
one has a serious disease (1). This preoccupation with having a serious medical condition is one of the
somatoform disorders and may be considered more as a symptom than a disease. In fact,
hypochondriacal symptoms often appear as a part of other mental disorders, including forms of
depression or schizophrenia (2). For this reason, a close investigation of hypochondriacal behavior is
necessary to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With numbers such as these, the issue of understanding more about these symptoms has become
important within the medical world. These pursuits have resulted in four etiologic theories regarding
hypochondriasis, a combination of which could hold the answers to this disorder.
The first of these theories relates to the amplification of normal bodily sensations, or when individuals
...attribute pathologic meanings to normal somatic sensations and functions. An example of this would
be to attribute swollen lymph nodes to a malignant disease, as opposed to a simple viral infection. The
consequences mostly affect the individual s psychological and behavioral well being, which leads to
the focus of the second theory. Based on Freud s psychodynamic hypotheses, there is a belief that
unconscious conflicts are the result of traumatic or frustrating childhood experiences being
reawakened in adult life by similar stress or frustration. Consequently, particularly high stress/tension
situations could arouse subconscious feelings of guilt, anxiety, and fear for a person, and their inability
to express these emotions verbally may lead to physical manifestations of conflict.
The remaining two theories take a more behavioral oriented approach. The third

Michael Klare Blood And Oil Summary
Michael Klare s Blood and Oil Michael Klare has written an interesting and very relevant book,
dealing as it does with the politics of oil, US foreign policy, the Middle East, and the causes of

willingness to use military force in order to secure its supplies of oil have been a major mistake. His

foreign policy in the Middle East and the oceans of crude oil that lie beneath the region s soil. Klare
traces oil s impact on international affairs since World War II, revealing its influence on the Truman,
Eisenhower, Nixon, and Carter doctrines. He shows how America s own wells are drying up as our
demand increases; by 2010, the United States will need to import sixty percent of its oil. Since most of
this supply will have to come from violently anti American zones, our dependency is bound to lead to
recurrent military involvement. Ultimately, the cost of oil will be measured in blood: the blood of
American soldiers who die in combat, the blood of the many other casualties of oil related violence,
including the victims of terrorism. Klare believes that if America does not reduce its dependency on
imported oil it will have to increase its military presence in the Middle East, stationing permanent
garrisons in countries like Iraq and facing the need to take further measures to support the Saudi
Arabian regime and possible action in central Asian countries like Kazakhstan. He believes that the
US military budget will therefore have to increase if the current policies remain in place, and claims
that, the American military is being used more and more for the protection of overseas oil fields and

Conduct is Excellence. The excellence credo is further highlighted in the 2005 Code of Conduct as
The Power of Quality (Caterpillar, 2005 p. 11). Caterpillar is trying to impart to the stakeholders and
their employees that they strive for excellence in everything they do. Caterpillar has built a line of

Sekaran Bougie Research Process
A Comparative Assessment of an Journal Article in regards to the Sekaran Bougie Research Process
Figure 1 Sekaran Bougie Research Process Abstract The analysis will represent a comparative
assessment of an article that appeared in the Journal of Sports Media, Volume 3, Number 1, Spring
2008 entitled Interactive Media and Sports Journalists: The Impact of Interactive Media on Sports
Journalists (Wigley Meirick, 2008). This analysis will focus on the first two steps of the eleven step
research process outline by Sekaran Bougie (Sekaran Bougie, 2010). These steps involve observation
and the preliminary data gathering. Therefore, this analysis will focus mainly on the introductory
information and the literature review that the analyzed study outlines in the article. Introduction In
regards to conducting research for use in business, much of the research is geared toward ultimately
being used as the basis for decision making. Therefore it is vital that the research follows a purely
rational process to eliminate as much subjectivity as possible in order to obtain the most effective
results. The first step in the research process begins with observation (Sekaran Bougie, 2010).
Observation is the step in which a significant amount of creativity can be used to identify potential
research problems or gaps in the current body of literature. This phase is comparatively loosely
defined because the observations can be made in a variety of ways and from

  • 2. How Does Genetics Affect The Achievement Of Food Security... 7.1 Introduction Throughout the report the focus has been on how genetics can contribute to the achievement of food security in the developing world through crop improvement. However, there have been other non scientific factors involved in the implementation of the science in the development context. For certain examples such as the use of genetic science to increase the productivity in terms of yield increase of a crop (chapter 4), it could be argued that the non scientific factors such as governance and investment are equally important as science for the achievement of food security as one would not work without the other. Some of the non scientific factors mentioned were present in more than one chapter and therefore formed a key theme ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He co leads a research group which investigates the genomics and evolution of the plants and animals with a focus on crops and has experience working on projects in collaboration with developing countries (recently in Ethiopia). I have therefore looked at the potential of genetics to meet various aspects of the SDG goal, and used that analysis to identify a number of non scientific factors associated with the potential of the science to make a significant impact. I have then, in turn, used that analysis to design a semi structured interview with Professor Heslop Harrison. This chapter will therefore discuss the various themes that have emerged including an analysis of those of the chapters, along with insight provided by an expert in the field of agricultural plant science. FACTORS THEMES The factors and themes in this chapter have come from the issues identified in the conclusion of the various chapters, as well as targets 2.a, 2b.c and 2.c of SDG 2. These factors/ themes are therefore the outcome of my thoughts and the work carried out so far in the project. 7.3 ECONOMIC POLITICAL FACTORS 1. Governance Investments Target 2.a focuses on the importance of investing in agriculture in terms of rural infrastructure, agricultural research and technology (including gene banks) to increase agricultural productivity capacity, especially in least developed countries. • 3. The Power Of A Nuclear Reactor There are many ways to create power. Many of the modern power production systems are very costly to run. Some create power in ways that pollute the earth, and others use renewable resources. With new and upcoming ways to create power, prices for power are dropping. Nuclear Energy is a rising way to create large amounts of efficient power. A long process goes into creating Nuclear energy. Uranium is the product, found in most rocks, that powers the nuclear reactors. The uranium then goes through a process known as nuclear fission. As uranium breaks down or decays, it produces heat inside the earth s crust. A similar process generates heat inside a nuclear reactor (Emirates, par. 5). The uranium then goes through a process called nuclear fission. Nuclear fission is the process of splitting a nucleus in two. Inside the uranium fuel pellets, there are millions of uranium nuclei (Emirates, par.6). Many people believe that uranium is the only way power is made in a nuclear reactor. But there are many forms of power that come out of nuclear fission. The nuclear fusion then heats water to a boiling point to create steam. The steam in turn, spins large turbine blades that drive electrical generators (Nuclear, par. 11). During that whole process, multiple ways of creating power are output. A great output would be the production of hydrogen. Hydrogen is a good source of power for various reasons. Although hydrogen is abundant in the universe, it must be produced from ... • 5. What Is The Relationship Between Morality And Morality Freedom and morality is connected to each other. We have freedom to do things and to decide things for ourselves. But morality teaches us to choose from the right and the wrong behavior. Morality is concerned about the values, conducts, and principles of a certain person while freedom is being able to make your own decisions and getting it done. These two have a big relationship with each other because they must be given importance in our lives. What is the deeper relationship between freedom and morality? And what can be done to have them both? Morality falls under the concept of dictum which tells us, to do good and to avoid evil. It can be observed in our everyday living. We can see it even in the simplest act that a person is doing. For example, a student decides to study and take a review at night. Morality comes in because that student has a choice and she has chosen to do the good thing rather than doing other things. Morality and ethics both focuses on the human conduct. It deals with the standards of right doings and the wrong ones. But there is also a big difference between the two. Morality talks about the right and wrong doings while ethics are the moral principles. Meaning ethics is can be considered under morality. It is like a step where a person chooses from doing the right or wrong thing. When she already had a decision and she stands for it, ethics will come on its way. The moral ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We always have the freedom to do things but we often forget about choosing the right from the wrong doings. We become selfish that we only think of our own good and pleasure. In that case, freedom leads us to different paths in our lives. It can slowly destroy us and the plans we have for the future. So it only means that with freedom, we should have the responsibility. We should possess the responsibility to be morally aware of the things and the choices that we will pick up and make for ... • 6. The Diet And Foraging Behavior Diet and Foraging Behavior Capuchins are generally frugivorous with fleshy fruits making up 53.9% of their diet. The other half of their diet is made up of 16% seeds, 13.9 % corn, 11.1% flowers, 6.3 % leaves, and 1.5% roots. These primates forage together in large groups; and have a preference for fleshy fruits is thought to be a way of eliminating competition for food, as there is evidence that other species avoid the fruits capuchins eat (Galetti and Pedroni 1994). While chimpanzees and capuchins share the diet of seeds, leaves, and fruits; the diet of the chimp is incredibly variable. Although primarily frugivorous their diet includes: bark, resin, stems, pith, insects, eggs, and occasionally soil (Goodall 1986).The usually highly social chimpanzee prefers to forage alone with males spending most of their day foraging for food and females spending more than half of their day resting. There is also evidence of groups of chimpanzees hunting and eating various large mammals including: bushpigs, colobus monkeys, and baboons (Boesch Boesch 1989). Capuchins and chimpanzees both utilize tools in order to obtain foods. Capuchins have utilized anvil stone tool technology, in which a nut is placed on a hard surface (anvil) and pounded upon using a large stone (hammer) until the shell cracks (Fragaszy 2004).On the other hand, chimpanzees not only use the hammer and anvil technology, they also create their own tools. This essay will look to The Thoughts of Brahma, Brahma is Lonely, The King, the Hawk, and the Pigeon, as well as Gautama and the Elephant. Analysis of these short stories and comparison to basic Christian and non theistic views will show the similarity and how close to the truth the selections could be. In the story, the King Vrishadarbha was asked by a pigeon for protection from a hawk. The hawk in the story represents temptation, as it tries to get to its prey by any means. The king, in return, kept to his promise and gave his own flesh in place of the pigeon. In the end, it was unveiled that this was a test from Indra, the leader of devas, and the king was restored and brought to heaven for being honorable and keeping his word. • 9. The Theory Of Evolution In Aimee Bender s The Rememberer The theory of evolution is a pivotal idea that influences the way that all species are seen, including humans. The theory of evolution was established by Charles Darwin, and it presents the idea that species adapt to fit new environments and changes can occur over time. If evolution allows organisms to adjust over time to adapt to their environment, couldn t the opposite situation occur? The idea of devolution is covered by Aimee Bender in her engaging story The Rememberer . Bender relates her story to the idea of devolution by using her lover Ben to constantly devolve into different animals throughout the story. The story begins with Ben being a human and immediately he devolves to different animals. She reveals how the relationship was with Ben when he was human , and how it evolved to the tragedy that it became. The more Ben devolves the weaker their relationship becomes, until Ben completely disappears. Bender uses symbolism and the idea of devolution to illustrate the physical and mental deterioration of a loved one, and as an outlet to ease her grief. The use of symbolism is visible throughout the entire story. Bender uses different animals as stages to her physical and mental deterioration. Bender is happy and contempt when her lover is human however when her relationship takes a turn for the worse, she begins depicting Ben as different animals devolving to a meaningless being. Bender has a tornado of emotions towards Ben but it is evident that she truly loves him. When their relationship weakens Bender becomes dismal and heartbroken, and in order to deal with her sorrow she uses symbolism to depict her lover devolving with their relationship. It is clear when she is describing Ben, she begins with an ape, to monkey, to turtle, and finally a salamander. She devolves Ben to an animal based on his significance in their relationship. The symbolism is present from the beginning but gains significance when she states, When I go to the kitchen, I peer in the pan and see he s some kind of salamander now. He s small (Bender 2). When Ben becomes the salamander he is practically gone from the relationship, and is when her mental and physical deterioration is at its peak. The symbolism also plays a separate ... In all probability, the creature was reaching out, as a small child does to their mother, but his ugly appearance only frightened Victor into running away (Coulter) The main reason for its rejection is the monster s outward appearance. The rejection by humans in general and specifically by its creator only increases the monsters feelings of loneliness, emotional abandonment, and, as a result, anger. The loneliness of the Creature leads it to unbelievable acts of violence, the first one being the killing of Frankenstein s youngest brother William. The monster describes its terrible act in detail: I gazed on my victim, and my heart swelled with exultation and hellish triumph: clapping my hands, I exclaimed, I too can create desolation; my enemy is not impregnable; this death will carry despair to him, and a thousand other miseries shall torment and destroy him (Shelley 97). • 14. Lithium Ion Batteries And Its Effects Lithium ion batteries were introduced commercially during the early 1990 s as the desire for smaller and more lightweight rechargeable batteries grew with the increased demand for the improvement of portable electronic devices (Yoshino, 2012). Prior to this there were commercially available rechargeable batteries already on the market, predominately in the form of lead acid (PbA), Nickel Cadmium (NiC) and Nickel Metal hydride (NiMH) batteries. The development of the Lithium ion (Li ion) battery began due to the knowledge of lithium s low redox reaction rate and high energy to weight ratio (Wu, 2015), which, it was believed would make Li ion batteries a good option for introducing smaller, more energy rich batteries to the growing market. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Through the continuous research and development in the chemistry of Li ion batteries the components have been extensively studied in an attempt to find the best materials to ensure a battery with a high energy capacity and safety features. There are a wide range of cathode materials available for use in a Li ion battery. Those with a good level of stability at high temperatures, insolubility in the electrolyte and good electrical conductivity (Chakrabarti, 2008) being the ideal choice for the cathode. In general cathodes consist of lithium metal oxides and these layered or intercalated oxides containing nickel, cobalt and manganese are those which have been studied most extensively. Both cobalt and nickel have a high voltage, making these metals excellent options for the cathode, however, the availability of cobalt is quite limited. Manganese is a low cost substitution but it has limited cycling behaviour, hence mixtures of these metals are combined to provide a cathode with a high thermal threshold, good rate capabilities and availability with low toxicity and low cost (Claus, 2008). Recent studies have highlighted polyoxyanion structures, such as Lithium Iron Phosphate, as options for the cathode material, providing high electrochemical performances as well as nontoxicity (Chakrabarti, 2008). As with cathode materials, there are many options for the material of the anode, with each providing different advantages. The Anode requires a high and reversible ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Reasons For Police Brutality As recent incidents of police brutality plague our nation toward minority groups, especially that of African Americans, the question asked by many is if such deadly force necessary, and what other actions could have led to a better outcome? Although our primary thought is to blame police officers for death, we must realize that sometimes deadly action is necessary and anyone put in a similar situation would act the same way. According to the U.S Supreme Court in the 1985 case, Tennessee vs Garner, police force can only be used when, [the] suspect is a significant threat to officer or others. Later, in the case of Graham vs. Connor, the Supreme Court ruled that officers who use force must be judged on the totality of circumstances and a standard of objective reasonableness. Force must be judged from the perspective of a reasonable officer on the scene, rather than with the 20/20 vision of hindsight; however, this does not excuse police brutality, and officers must face penalties for taking someone s life. Cases such as, Eric Garner, Michael Brown, and Tamir Rice illustrate when police need to be punished for their actions and be held accountable for violence against citizens. Although clearly outlined for what would be a just reason for necessary force, many cases that involved police brutality can be blamed on tactics that relate to broken windows and a need for different policies and methods. These strategies were broken in to two separate groups, the first three are broad sweeping changes, and the last four are techniques to improve decisions we are making. Managers are measured on the decisions that they are making. A good manager will know what it takes to make sound, and reasonable decisions. Decisions define who we are, and they can have profound effects on others, so we must choose wisely when it comes to the final result. The first strategy, using decision analysis tools, states that we must rely on procedures to make decisions. This is the process of using one or more lessons learned to debias our thought process. Tough decisions can be made when we are faced with similar problems that have a similar outcome. Focusing on one problem by itself can lead to us only focusing on one aspect of a decision, and nothing else. Again, this is a trap, and the more we see, the more we can make informed decisions. Strategy five is take an outsiders view. This states that an outsiders view tends to be less biased and more generalized, therefore the decisions are somewhat easier. A good example is when we assume that we can do something better than the last person, only to be surprised that we cannot. Strategy six is understand bias in others. It is a fact that as leaders we must work with others that make decisions. We must analyze past decisions, and try to find better ways to do things in the workplace. Leveraging things like comparisons, estimation, and prediction can all help make more sound decisions. Strategy seven is make wiser and more ethical decisions.
