The Xbox 360 And Wii
Video games have been around for many years and have slowly developed into a common hobby for
many young adults. In fact, more than 1.2 billion people are playing video games worldwide. The
original gaming console by Magnavox has evolved tremendously over the last decade and has been
developed by many different companies. Although there is an innumerable amount of consoles in the
world, two iconic consoles are the Microsoft s XBOX 360 and the Nintendo s Wii. The XBOX 360
and Wii are two very popular gaming consoles that are different in appearance, the applications and
services they provide, and the amount of games and accessories they each have available. When
compared to each other, the XBOX 360 and Wii have multiple differences when it comes to the way
each console looks. The Nintendo Wii is a very small and compact device. The console developers
managed to keep the Wii as small as possible by incorporating only one Universal Serial Bus also
known as a USB port. The Wii console is available in a variety of colors, but the most common and
standard color is white. Compared to the small size and compact aspects of the Wii, the XBOX 360 is
extremely different. The XBOX is close in size to a toaster oven and can be purchased in black and
white. Unlike the Wii, the XBOX has multiple USB ports. When designing the XBOX 360, Microsoft
kept the gamer in mind and tried to provide them with an easy and resourceful device. The overall
appearance of both consoles varies and depending

Sam Westing Quotes
Sam Westing was found dead in the book, The Westing Game, By Ellen Raskin. Everyone is on the
lookout for his murderer. James Shin Hoo is the perfect candidate as his murderer, He is full of
resentment, selfishness, and a bitter attitude. James Shin Hoo is the probable murderer. In the book,
James Shin Hoo Claims he has an airtight alibi for the night the body was found dead. He says that he
was in his restaurant. However it never states in the book that Sam Westing was killed the night he
was found dead. James Shin Hoo easily could have killed Sam Westing before the night he was found
dead. In addition, James Shin Hoo reeks of resentment and selfishness. He sued Sam Westing for
stealing his invention. He remarked to his son that he was

House Of The Seven Gables Metaphors
The House of the Seven Gables is a metaphorical, symbolic, and romantic. The house and the
characters are all symbols for something greater and can be linked back to society. These symbols still
have influence today, because the problems the Pyncheon family faced still goes on today. That
problem that plagued the family for generation is greed. Indeed, Greed is the main crisis in the story.
The curse of Colonel Pyncheon affected the entire family for generations. Judge Pyncheon continued
this curse by acting upon his greed. This leads to him dying in the same why the Colonel did. This
whole thing started when Matthew Maule s land became ...exceedingly desirable in the eyes of a
prominent and powerful personage (Hawthorne 5). That powerful ... Show more content on

The two of them also represent something else. They represent all the good and bad that you can
inherit from your ancestors. It s true, you may get their wealth and assets, but if you are unlucky, you
are almost certain to get their debts as well. Poor Hephzibah represents the unlucky inheritor. She lost
her wealth and fallen to a working class state. Her situation is the perfect symbol for economic
change. She was once an aristocrat, as she refers to herself as a woman instead of a lady, who is forced
to work in a store in her own house because of her loss of wealth. She begins to feel hatred for the
wealthy because of this, for what good end, in the wisdom of providence, does that women live. Must
the whole world toil, that the palms of her hands may be kept white and delicate? (Hawthorne 55).
This is ironic because Hephzibah was once wealthy herself, But I was born a lady, and have always
lived one no matter in what narrowness of means, always a lady. (Hawthorne 45). To feel bitterness
for the person, who she used to be, shows how far Hephzibah has fallen and how important money is.
Luckily, money didn t affect her morality completely as she immediately regrets her thinking. Of
course, this wouldn t be the only time that Hephzibah s morality would be

Army Signal Corps
Started on June 21, 1860 and formally recognized as a branch of the US military on March 3, 1863,
the Signal Corps of the United States Army has had a varied and honored history. Although it began
simply by today s standards, with the use of flags and torches at its inception, through contemporary
times it continues to innovate and embrace technology in order to keep commanders informed and
warfighters communicating. What started as the vision of one man in the mid nineteenth century has
transformed today into an entire branch composed of tens of thousands of Soldiers, Noncommissioned
Officers, Warrants Officers, and Commissioned Officers. The US Army Signal Corps has had a direct

The US Army Signal Corps sent training teams to Vietnam, as well as provided training for
Vietnamese officers in the US. Communist insurgent groups began attacking in South Vietnam, killing
two Americans in 1959. It was during this time that the Army began using atmospheric scatter
technologies, bouncing radio waves off different layers of the atmosphere in order to communicate
beyond line of sight up to 400 miles away. (3) This system was modified to form the tactical
communications backbone for ground troops, where standard Army multi channel radios were utilized
in addition to the new troposcatter radios. Throughout the Vietnam Conflict, though, communication
between the geographically separated ground units and camps was improved through the introduction
of better radio equipment and radio retransmit systems. The milestone achieved in the Vietnam
Conflict, from a signal perspective, was the propagation of high quality commercial communications
to the Soldier in the field. In the years following the Vietnam Conflict and the draft, the Army
downsized yet again, contracting to an all volunteer force. In July of 1973, the Army placed all of its
branch schools under the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), and the Army consolidated its
signal training to its training site at Fort Gordon, Georgia. (SOURCE) On October 1, 1974 Fort

The Alaska Earthquake Research Paper
An earthquake with a magnitude of 9.2 occurred in the northwestern state of Alaska in 1964. It was so
powerful that it made fishing boats in Louisiana, which is a southeastern state in the U.S., sink.
Magnitude is the amount of energy that s given off during an earthquake. What exactly is an
earthquake?
Our planet has four main layers, which are: the inner core, outer core, mantle, and crust. The inner
core is the center, or middle, of Earth. The crust is the top layer, and it s the layer we walk on. Both the
mantle s top area and the entire crust have many pieces in them, kind of like the pieces of a jigsaw
puzzle.
The pieces that make up the crust and mantle are called tectonic plates. They re always slowly
moving, and they can slide past each other or even bump into one another. The edges of these pieces,
or plates, are called plate boundaries. They have lots of faults, which are the surfaces where they slip
past each other, and these faults are where most earthquakes happen. ... Show more content on

When the plate moves far enough, a fault unsticks, or breaks apart the edges, which causes an
earthquake. Basically, earthquakes are what happens when two plates suddenly bump into one another
or slide past each other, usually along a fault.
The reason the earth shakes during an earthquake is because of stored energy. When the edges are
stuck together but the plates continue to move, the energy that would usually make the pieces slide
past each other becomes stored or saved. When the rough edges unstick, this stored energy is released
in every direction in seismic

Violent Index Crimes
The city of Boston experienced a momentous spike in violent crimes from the years 2004 to 2006.
Violent Index crimes consist of robbery, aggravated assault, forcible rape, non negligent manslaughter
and murder. These crimes, predominately robberies and assaults committed with guns, rose by nine
percent; the percentage of homicides also increased by 23. The communities experiencing these
crimes were mainly those of minorities such as Dorchester, Mattapan and Roxbury. Abruptly, the
residents of Boston began losing faith in the Boston Police Department and their capabilities to keep
them safe. In order to gain back civility Commissioner Davis and the Boston Police Department
enforced a policing program called Safe Street Teams. SST officers were ... Show more content on

They implemented community outreaches to deter the population from crime in a positive way rather
than through fear or punishment and they increased surveillance and security through their SSTs. The
study does not reflect Rational Choice Theory because the SSTs are attempting to control crime
through fear, classical theories do not apply to this study. However, it does reflect Routine Activities
Theory. Routine Activity is defined as crime and victimization are highest in places where three
factors come together in time and place: motivated offenders, suitable or attractive targets and absence
of a guardian, (Intro to Criminology, page 70). In these urban areas all three factors certainly come
into play. Motivated offenders such as gangs or mislead youth, attractive targets such as places with
broken locks (that the SSTs repaired) and before the SSTs there was an absence of a constant guarding
authorities only coming when called for specific crimes. According to this study, the Neoclassical
approach is more successful in crime prevention of all sorts whether personal, property, etc. because
crime is not black and white. There are always conditions to consider when convicting someone of a
crime such as be age, mental capacity and number of offenses. Classical is far too broad to properly

Violence on Television Essay
quot; There was murderers going around killing lots of people and stealing
jewelry. quot; This quote comes from the mouth of an eight year old girl after
watching the evening news on television. The eight year old girl claims
that she is afraid quot;when there is a murder near because you never know if
he could be in town quot; (Cullingford, 61). A recent report from the National
Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) pools evidence from over 2,500 studies
within the last decade on over 100,000 subjects from several nations to
show that the compiled evidence of television s influence on behavior is so
quot;overwhelming quot; that there is a consensus in the research community that
quot;violence on television does lead to aggressive ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The media argument that high ratings
correspond with the public s best interest is simply not valid. Even the
American Medical Association agrees that the quot;link between televised
violence and later aggressive behavior warrants a major organized cry of
protest from the medical profession quot; (Palmer, 122). The issue of the
public s infatuation with television can be paralleled with that of a young
child and his desire for candy and quot;junk foods. quot; The child enjoys eating
such foods, though they produce the harmful effects of rotting away at his
teeth. With a parent to limit his intake of such harmful sweets, however,
the child is protected from their damage. Similarly, the American public
desires to view violent programs at the risk of adapting induced aggressive
behaviors. Because the networks refuse to act as a quot;mother, quot; and to limit
the amount of violence shown on television, there are no restrictions to
prevent television s violent candy from rotting away at the teeth of
society.
Harry Skornia claims that quot;it is naive and romantic to expect a
corporation to have either a heart of a soul in the struggle for profits
and survival quot; (34). But who, then, is to take responsibility for the
media s actions if not the industry itself? Because there has not been any
sufficient answers to this question so far,

CONCEPTS AND DEFINITIONS OF DISABILITY The contemporary conception of disability
proposed in the WHO International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) views
disability as an umbrella term for impairments, activity limitations and participation restrictions.
Disability is the interaction between individuals with a health condition (e.g. cerebral palsy, Down
syndrome or depression) and personal and environmental factors (e.g. negative attitudes, inaccessible
transportation, or limited social supports). Long ago there was great confusion over the meaning of
terms such as impairment, handicap, or disability. Then, in 1980, the WHO provided great service by
offering a clear way of thinking about it all in a little book ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Measurements of quality of life extend the disability focus beyond the ability to perform activities of
daily living to include a broad range of functioning (work, home, play) and also the person s feelings
of satisfaction and well being. This is necessarily a qualitative and subjective concept, judged by the
patient in terms of the extent to which they are able to do the things they wish to do. In this medical
context, quality of life is distinct from wealth or possessions, and to amke this clear you may see the
term health related quality of life. Reflecting these evolving ideas, the WHO revised its Impairment,
Disability and Handicap triad in 2001, re naming it the International Classification of Function (ICF).
This classification system provides codes for the complete range of functional states; codes cover
body structures and functions, impairments, activities and participation in society. The ICF also
considers contextual factors that may influence activity levels, so function is viewed as an interaction
between health conditions (a disease or injury) and the context in which the person lives (both
physical environment and cultural norms relevant to the disease). It establishes a common language
for describing functional states that can be used in comparing across diseases and countries. The ICF
therefore uses positive language, so that activity and participation

Downsizing Case Study
Introduction Carl, (2003) argued that, the recent economic crisis has led to an increased use of
downsizing by corporations to manage costs. In the case of high technology workers, the direct cost of
downsizing is so expensive because of employees compensations and other benefits. This type of
compensation is typically comprised of some combination of the following: benefits payouts, costs of
administrative processing amongst others. On the other hand indirect costs include law cases from
affected employees, loss of productivity by employees low morale for survivors of downsizing and
others. Griffin, (2002) opines that, there are many alternatives of downsizing the employees in the
organization. There are other ways of cutting the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A company should have a method of informing the employees when they are earmarked for
downsizing using a consistent communication strategy. The role of human resource manager is to
make sure that, employees facing downsizing should be treated with Outmost respect and dignity
similar to one offered to them when they were being welcomed in the employment. HR should also
keep unfettered focus on employees job performance and use the layoff as an opportunity to get rid of
poor performers. There should be consistent and steady communication communications to affected
employees, transparency and truthfulness. According to Casio, (2003) there are various steps taken by
the management to preserve the morale of the downsizing drive survivors. The company is expected to
treat the departing employees in a fair and humane manner. Miller, (2008) adds that those employees
who survive the downsizing are exposed to signals which provide a clue of how they are likely be
treated when faced with such ordeal. How the organization treat to leaving employees have an impact
on those employment not affected in the company. In addition the company management might
articulate a vision outlining the advantages of downsizing. This will highly likely preserve the morale
of the left employees. A number of studies focusing on relationship between stress and downsizing
have been conducted. Some organization reported that, laid off employees are

The Role Of Journalism And Its Impact On Society Essay
In a contemporary society, the role of journalism is a varied one that covers many different aspects of
people s lives. As more and more outlets spring up around the world, many more stories are able to be
covered by different outlets, and this means that journalism takes on a more and more important role
in a contemporary society. Much of our lives centre on political and social happenings, and
journalistic outlets are the public s way of finding all the information on these event. Journalism also
provides us with a way of finding out which of these stories are important and deserve our attention,
and which stories can be ignored. The important role of journalism can be well observed in the recent
coverage of the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) in both New Zealand and around the
world. This is a ground breaking economic deal, and holds a great deal of importance for the 800
million citizens of the countries involved, as well as the rest of the world. With worldwide coverage of
this deal, it is inevitable that different types of reporting occurs, and that different outlets will provide
different accounts. With so many different journalism outlets around the world and locally, many have
to have a way of standing out from the crowd. This means that some extremely different coverage of
very similar stories can occur. However it can also simply be down to different ownership, differing
political views, and different socio economic environments. Two outlets with

Marina Abramovic and Ulay is often called the grandmother of performance art In 2005(?), after
parting ways with Ulay both romantically and artistically, Marina Abramovic started a new group of
work Seven Easy Piece. In this work she mostly reenacted performances both hers and other artists

desire to find herself a new voice by using those of others. Contrary to her past work she is not the

created before meeting Ulay is particularly interesting as it express the desire to trace back who she
was before her heavily emotional collaboration. Abramovic and Ulay s time together had indeed been

My Journey To The World Essay
Gateway To The World
Traveling isn t in everyone s favor, but it sure is in mine. British novelist, Lawrence Durrell once
quoted, Travel can be one of the most rewarding forms of introspection. The reason I enjoy traveling
is because it takes me on a journey for finding my inner self. Before traveling, I ve always been closed
minded at how I viewed the world, but once I got a bigger look at how the world works, my thoughts
and I, myself have changed. It all begins on a sweltering day in Schertz, Texas. My mom had received
a phone call that was certain to come at some point. The person on the other side of the phone
informed her that we would have to travel to Turkey and live there for 2 years. Since I was 5 years old
at the time, I thought traveling to foreign countries every now and then was normal for every family.
There were trucks coming and going, suit case zippers zipping, and chaos all around me. One month
later, I m was on a plane headed to this unknown country that was too far away for the impatient self
that I am. Eager to march out of the plane, I was at last at the final destination. As I looked around the
Adana Airport, people looked different and their clothing was divergent as they wore dilapidated shirts
and pants. Entering the real world of Turkey, transportation mainly consisted of grimy metro buses
and bikes. The atmosphere smelled like thousands of Burger King Whoppers were trampled on with a
side of six week old onion rings. After all the luggage

peasant woman by the name of Caterina Amadori. Young Leo moved into his father s estate when he
was about five years old. The artist was raised by his stepmothers and his father on the estate. Leo had

The Causes And Effects Of Human Trafficking In Michigan
Human Trafficking in Michigan It is dark outside, and you are driving back home from work. Your
stomach starts to growl from hunger, so you decide to take the next exit to get something to eat. The
town you stop at is a little creepy, but your hunger is unbearable. You pull into the parking lot, and
start walking to the door. You are immediately followed by two guys slightly larger than you. You start
to walk faster, but unfortunately they catch up and are now standing in front of you. You are scared
because they are taking you back to their car. What is going to happen to you? Why are there not more
police patrolling this area at night? Why is this happening to me? Human trafficking can happen in a
blink of an eye especially when people are doing everyday things. According to The Michigan
Department of Health and Human Services it is known to be the second largest criminal enterprise
after drugs. There are many forms of trafficking such as human trafficking, sex trafficking, and labor
trafficking. ( Human Trafficking )
Michigan has seen a sixteen percent increase in reported human trafficking cases. Polaris, an
organization that helps fight human trafficking across the globe, released the data from the National
Human Trafficking Resource Center, stating that there were 152 Michigan Human Trafficking cases
reported in 2015. They included 122 of sex trafficking and 18 cases of labor trafficking. In 2014, 131

Breaking the Cycle Essay
Crimes committed by youthful offenders in our nation have gone from a troubling statistic that would
have been barely noticed even 25 years ago to a problem of pandemic proportions. The responsibility
for this falls on every citizen and we must all bite the bullet and agree to properly fund programs that
can help to prevent crime, properly rehabilitate prisoners, and save the youth of our nation at the same
time.
Youth gangs have existed in various forms since at least the 19th century, although the nature and
extent of their activity has evolved over time. Over the past 25 years in particular, gangs have
expanded rapidly both in size and their areas of operation. Gangs today are more violent, their
activities are more widespread and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Maybe the readers may think it s no big deal because they have not crunched the numbers . I challenge
those readers to look at the following statistics and then try to honestly say it is no big deal . The
average annual operating cost per State inmate in 2001 was $22,650, or $62.05 per day. Among
facilities operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, it was $22,632 per inmate, or $62.01 per day. (
Stephan, 2004) What logically thinking person would not want an extra $62.01 a day going to hire
new teachers for our local schools? Who among us would not want that extra money going to fix the
potholes on our city s streets or add an extra street light downtown? How do we get those dollars out
of the prison system and back into the public coffers where the can be better used? Once again the
signs seem to point to rehabilitation and crime prevention. Why should we focus our attention on the
youth of our nation? I think the answer to that is plain to see and that answer is crime prevention
programs targeted towards youth. If we can prevent the first crime from happening we don t lose yet
another precious life to a downward spiral of violence and crime. What do we do about the ones we
were not able to reach before they entered the prison system? We have to provide rehabilitation
programs for these offenders, whether the programs are inside prison or after they are released. We
need to show these offenders that there are options

Change is the law of Nature:
Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change
anything. George Bernard Shaw. Let us change our mind and be ready to make changes for the future
generation. The trends in technology are growing rapidly. We should set our mind to adopt those
changes.
Only when we are ready to accept changes, we could develop the interest in knowing things. Being a
teacher it is always essential to get updated with subject and technology. So that the expectation of

Children observe many new inventions and growth of technology in which they live with. So their

When There Are There Boundaries Research Paper
There has been boundaries between different lands for many of years. The land that has been
boundary can be as different from two different land lords all the way too two different countries or
kingdoms. Humans are not the only ones who creat these boundaries, fish and other reptiles are also
known to create boundaries. Boundaries can be shown in three ways. There is the corner monuments
that can be physically found on the property while there are also just written boundaries where a
surgery will in detail write down the property lines. Then there is by the law where just a common
understanding of where the location is. There are also 10 principles to understand when it come to
boundaries and surveying them to help us understand how it stands. These boundaries have caused
conflicted in many counties such as in America and in England, and also many people have died
because of them. Boundaries are taking to a literal point where one believes if they are on one side of
the line they believe in one way while on the other the believe in another way. Like in the book the
example was a bar on the Canadian and American border where in Canadian they would serve at

The Idea Of Studying Abroad

most students have always dreamt of, and I happen to fall in that category of students. For me, Asian

student who is interested in a healthcare profession, specifically being a physician assistant. I believe

called Two Koreas, and learned a lot about the history of North and South Koreas. Luckily, the CIEE
Summer Korean studies will allow me to visit Korean organizations, temples, museums, and historic
sites that were mentioned in that class.
I strongly feel that it is important to value and respect all countries and their cultures. Therefore, I am
aiming for students on my campus to have more exposure to Asian countries. Also, as the Vice
President of All Students Interested in Asia, I have the responsibility of informing them about Asian
countries and their traditions. After this abroad program, I hope to broaden their perspectives on South
Korean culture by demonstrating its distinct, unique characteristics. I aspire to enlighten people with
my studying abroad experience in hopes of gaining respect for different Asian cultures. It would also
be incredible if sharing my experience can help others find their passion in learning about a culture of
their interest. Because South Korea has many appealing aspects, such as its pop culture and historical
sites, I believe that studying abroad here will allow me to accomplish my goal of educating others
about the wonderful qualities of one out of many Asian cultures.

Hinduism Essay
Hinduism
Hinduism cannot be described as an organized religion. One individual did not found Hinduism.
Hinduism is God centered and therefore one can call Hinduism as founded by God. Hinduism is based
upon Eternal Principles. If a great scientist like Einstein discovered or realized laws of physics,
Hinduism would call him a great Rishi (Maharshi or seer of truth.) Such seers of truth are not confined
to any one age or country. Self realized persons like Jesus Christ would be called Rishis (seers) and
their teachings would be readily acceptable to those who properly understand the principles of
Hinduism . From the ancient times, many great Rishis achieved self realization through such means as
meditation and they realized ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The classical theory is now being rejected by increasing numbers of archeologists and religious
historians. Since Hindus believe that Hinduism pertains to all human beings many timelines begin
with the creation of life and includes major human accomplishments.
The Om is to Hindus As the cross is to Christians. It is made up of three Sanskrit letters, aa, au and ma
which, when combined, make the sound Aum or Om. The most important symbol in Hinduism, it
occurs in every prayer and invocation to most deities begins with it. As the symbol of piety, Om is
often found at the head of letters, pendants, enshrined in every Hindu temple and family shrines. This
symbol is actually a sacred syllable representing the Brahman or the Absolute the source of all
existence. Brahman, in itself, is incomprehensible so a symbol becomes mandatory to help us realize
the Unknowable. The syllable Om occurs even in English words having a similar meaning, for
instance, omniscience , omnipotent , omnipresent . Thus Om is also used to signify divinity and
authority. Its similarity with the Latin M as also to the Greek letter Omega is discernable. Even the
word Amen used by Christians to conclude a prayer seems to be akin to Om.
Second in importance only to the Om, the Swastika, a symbol that looks like the Nazi emblem, holds a
great religious significance for the Hindus. Swastika is not a syllable or a letter, but a pictorial

Venus s Greenhouse Effect
Despite being so similar in size to Earth, Venus is a very unique and interesting planet. Venus has a
very thick atmosphere and severe greenhouse effect, making it stand out in our solar system. Add info
from middle paragraphs. Before going into detail, let s look at some basic statistics and facts of Venus.
The second planet from the sun has an average distance of 0.72 AU. It has a similar size to Earth with
a radius of 6051 kilometers and a mass 82% that of Earth s. It is composed of rocks and metals and
has an average density of 5.24 g/cm3. Unlike most other planets, Venus has zero moons. Mainly due
to its very severe greenhouse effect, Venus has a searing average surface temperature of 740 K or

Its size made it retain a lot of heat, causing large volcanism. This caused a sizable amount of
outgassing, shooting a heavy amount of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, resulting in Venus s huge
greenhouse effect. Venus has an atmosphere consisting almost completely of CO2 and almost no
oxygen, making it impossible to breathe. The dense atmosphere of Venus reflects almost all blue light
away, making the sky look reddish orange. Slow rotation of Venus generates a weak Coriolis Effect,
creating small amounts of wind and no hurricane like storms. In fact, the highest wind speed ever
recorded on the planet is a light 6 kilometers per hour. Rainfall never occurs on Venus because any
droplets that were to form evaporate before hitting the ground. Circulation on the planet is so efficient
that the surface temperature is nearly the same over the entire planet. There are no seasons because of
the minimum axis tilt. The planet s very strong convection sends hot air upward making the
troposphere an astounding 400 degrees hotter than the surface. Sometimes, sulfuric acid forms acid
rain that falls through the troposphere but evaporates at least 30 kilometers before reaching the

The Prevention Of The Flu Season Brings Up A Lot Of...
We all know that the Flu season brings up a lot of queries about the disease prevention. The next
question is where we can find a reliable source of information. This will then lead us to look for a
website that is credible. While there are several accurate and reliable information, I chose Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention, also known as CDC. This is one of the operating bodies of the
Department of Health that deals mainly on the identification, prevention, control of diseases and
promotion of health education to improve the health of the citizens of the United States of America.
Numerous search engines in the web world can be utilized to access the website, URL

a trusted website because of its reputation of providing factual health information about disease
control and prevention. CDC is one of the government agency that provides guidelines in terms of
disease control and prevention. Analysis of Websites
Evaluation of websites entails a host of criteria for them to be considered credible. By merely looking

A Brief Look at Image Segmentation
Mei wang, Xiao Wei Wu, Hsiung Cheng Lin, Jian ping wang(2012) discussed the idea of following.
Today medical images are widely used. To achieve a clear and noise free images Image segmentation
is essential point. In this paper a new image segmentation method that is proportion of foreground to
background is used also called PFB. Using this method on human brain image we experiment the
result that the number of iteration steps for the threshold T is reduced. Using this method over
segmentation and discontinuities also can be avoided. Finally proposed a new method using both
Thresholding image segmentation and edge detection segmentation algorithm based on the Proportion
of Foreground to Background. After this the basic principal is define in this paper. Proportion of
Foreground to Background Algorithm combine the traditional iterative algorithm. Anita Khanna, Dr.
Manish Shrivastva(2012) In their paper they used unsupervised technique of segmentation which is
simple and give satisfactory result. We use Ultrasound (US) images and apply unsupervised
segmentation technique. There is a problem to segment Ultrasound image because of low contrast and
high speckle noise. In this paper we use different unsupervised technique like Thresholding; k means
cluster technique and expectation maximization and compare all the result. Ultrasound images are
texture feature image and expectation maximization (EM) technique gives best result of segmentation.

The first unmistakable difference they have is the fact that the Big Island is home to two active

possibility that they could still erupt in the future. Although the Big Island is larger than the other
seven Hawaiian islands combined, the Big Island is also the youngest Hawaiian island. With that said,
O ahu is the third oldest and the third largest island of all eight of them. Looks can be deceiving in this
case. Lastly, the Big Island also has some of the largest scientific telescopes that sit on Mauna Kea. On
the island of O ahu, there are no telescopes that sit on any of the inactive volcanoes. Overall, the
distinct differences between O ahu and the Big Island include one island having active volcanoes, their

The husband seemed very helpless without her in his life When we held each other, I had no past at
all, no present but her body, no future but to lie there and not let her go. (Butler, 1995, pg189). He was
aware that his wife engaging in an affair with another man, but he accepted it because he was more
fearful of losing her, even though he wanted to know he would never confront her with the truth. He
knew he was a fool for her because he had to remind himself how he is not stupid and how he has to
lock himself into the bathroom in order to hide his rage. His life was similar living as a human and a
bird. As a human he locked himself inside the bathroom and as a bird he was locked inside a cage and
in both situations he was unable to express how he feels because there was something always holding
him back. The last thing he wanted was for his wife to hate him by bringing up other men she is

Football s Influence On American Culture
High School is closer to the core of the American experience than anything else I can think of. Kurt
Vonnegut
America, the quintessential melting pot, allows us to experience an extraordinary amount of variety in
people when it comes to ethnicity, culture, language, personality, work ethic, and background.
High School consists of all different experiences. Sports have a huge impact on culture in many
countries, but America has uniquely created and enjoyed its own. Obviously, sports such as football
have a tremendous affect on American culture. The Football Friday Night tradition starts in high
school and continues into adulthood with college ball on Saturdays and professional ball on Sundays.

Stokely Carmichael Kwame Toure, better known as Stokely Carmichael, was one of the most
prominent civil rights figures in our history. Born in Trinidad, he became a citizen at the age of 13.
Stokely and his family moved to an Italian and Jewish neighborhood where he was one of the few
African Americans. He attended one of the most prestigious high schools, Bronx High School of
Science where he remained one of the few faces of color among his white elite counterparts.
Carmichael became very popular around his classmates, attending parties, dating white women, and
playing sports. While Stokely was aware of the racial tensions that ensued, he never realized until later
in life how differently he was perceived from his white counterparts. One evening upon graduating
high school, Stokely finally felt his calling to join the movement. Carmichael was watching a
television newscast that showed young African Americans protesting the racial injustices. When I first
heard about the Negroes sitting in at lunch counters I thought they were a bunch of publicity hounds.
He watched as these people were knocked off stools, ketchup thrown in their hair, and sugar thrown in
their eyes. After this he decided to join the Congress of Racial Equality. The Congress of Racial
Equality, otherwise known as CORE, was a leading civil rights activist groups. In the early 1960s

Social stereotypes and happiness
The story of the movie The Pursuit of Happyness directed by Gabriele Muccino portrays a family who
struggles with finding enough money to pay taxes and afford living expenses. The movie takes a place
in San Francisco during the 80s. The two main characters are the father Chris Gardner and his son
Christopher, Will Smith and Jaden Smith respectively. Gardner tries to support his family. But every
time he attempts to make things better, they always end up worse. Gardner in the story wonders on

In another perspective, fatherhood for Gardner is like a job for him. Because he loses his wife, he
needs to provide joy, fun and help for his son Christopher which is not an easy job to do. Those
fathers, who spend more time with their children, have a better life than others who spend most of
their time working and gaining money. However, being a father as a single parent like Chris gives him
the enthusiasm to do his best and replace his wife s role to have a better life with his son. Yet, this
decreases the happiness that Gardner possesses. According to Scott Coltrane, a sociologist at the
University of California, points out that Father s style of parenting has changed too. Fathers are
beginning to look more like mothers (qtd. in Cullen and Grossman). Before Linda leaves the family,
she works double shifts to make more money to afford the living expenses and to help her husband. So
Chris is the one who takes more care of their son than the mother, Linda. Gardner seems to be happier
being close to his son. There are many scenes in the movie that show how Gardner and Christopher
are happy of being together. Nonetheless, there is only one scene that Christopher not even misses his
mother; instead he asks did mom leave because of me? (The Pursuit of Happyness). This indicates that
Gardner does a great job of being a single parent that makes his son, not remembering his mother. For
fathers, home

How Peacekeeping Operations Evolved Over Time Essay
International peacekeeping efforts are a relatively new feature in military strategy. They have their
roots in earlier conflicts, most notably the First Schleswig War between Denmark and Prussia in 1849
1850. A combined force of 3,800 troops from both Sweden and Norway with the intent of maintaining
law and order and keeping the peace were assembled, while an armistice was worked out. This set the
precedent for peacekeeping operations that would become more commonplace in the twentieth
century. After the First World War, the League of Nations was established, the predecessor of what
would later become the United Nations. The League was established in large part to hopefully avoid
another world war as devastating as the Great War, as it was called. The League of Nations ultimately
disbanded, giving way to the United Nations, but peacekeeping operations increased and evolved to
encompass broader and more complex conflicts, including civil wars, which were ignored by the
League out of respect for a nation s sovereignty. This brief summary will address how peacekeeping
operations evolved over time and how these operations, or a specific operation, shapes the view of
peacekeeping operations by the American people. The League of Nations was established as a means
to ensure international peace and security through collective consultation and action. The early
peacekeeping operations largely depended on precedents, which established the rules and strategies to
be followed in

How To Brush Your Teeth Research Paper
Getting kids to brush their teeth well is a constant battle. You know how vital good oral health habits
are, but it s hard to convince your child when there are so many more interesing things to do. The
good news is that toothbrushing doesn t have to be monotonous or boring. Here are six tips to make
the experience more pleasant for both of you: 1. Let Your Child Pick a Toothbrush There is an almost
endless variety of toothbrushes to choose from. They come in practically any color imaginable and
feature a wide variety of popular characters. Allow your child the freedom to pick any style of brush
that he or she likes. If you can t find the perfect brush in a local store, you re almost sure to find what

Offer a Reward Turn brushing into a positive experience by offering a reward for a job well done. If
your child brushes for two minutes without complaining, offer a little something special. It could be
anything that your child likes, from stickers to extra screen time. The key is to tailor the reward to
your child, so that it s something he or she wants to strive for. 5. Have a Dance Party Why not brush
your teeth with your child and turn it into a fun time for both of you? Turn on some upbeat music and
dance around while you brush your teeth together. You ll be setting a great example, getting some
exercise and making sure that your little one s teeth get clean all at the same time. 6. Sound the Alarm
Instead of setting a standard timer to go off after two minutes of brushing, get creative. Do something
silly, like ring a bell, blow a whistle or play a ringtone on your phone. Your child will be so busy
anticipating the next alarm that he ll forget to complain about how long he has to brush. Convincing
kids to brush their teeth is definitely a challenge. It can leave even the most patient parents with frayed
nerves, but it doesn t have to be that way. By getting a little creative and silly, toothbrushing time can
become something to look foward to each day instead of something that both of you

Smith s Attack On Mercantilism
Smith s Attack on Mercantilism Smith needed individuals to practice thrift, diligent work and edified
self interest. He thought the act of illuminated self hobby was regular for the dominant part of
individuals. In his celebrated illustration, a butcher does not supply meat in view of good encourage
goals, but rather on the grounds that he benefits by offering meat. In the event that the meat he offers
is poor, he won t have rehash clients and therefore, no benefit. Along these lines, its in the butcher s
enthusiasm to offer great meat at a value that clients are willing to pay, so that both sides advantage in
every exchange. Smith accepted that the capacity to think long haul would control most organizations
from mishandling clients. At the point when that wasn t sufficient, he looked to the legislature to
uphold laws. Stretching out upon self enthusiasm for exchange, Smith saw thrift and reserve funds as
imperative ethics, particularly when investment funds were utilized to contribute. Through
speculation, industry would have the cash flow to purchase more work sparing hardware and support
advancement. This innovative jump forward would expand returns on contributed capital and raise the
general way of life. Smith censured how the English Parliament had passed laws that disabled
organized commerce and ruined the development of national riches. These laws forced high import
obligations, offered appropriations to supported organizations, and conceded imposing business

Speech Sounds Octavia Butler Analysis
Octavia Butler, the author of Speech Sounds and many other short stories, is a well known author for
her feminist point of view which might be attributed to her father who died when she was young and
her mother taking on the role as the father figure as well as the mother figure. After the bus stop,
Valerie Rye, the protagonist in this short story who goes by Rye for a lot of the short story, met
Obsidian who Rye assumes his name to be; also, he used to be a LAPD officer. Rye immediately trusts
Obsidian to drive her to Pasadena to see what is left of her family. In Octavia Butlers Speech Sounds,
the men and women have reverse gender roles throughout this short story than we are used to because
men in our world tend to have more power over women. After the bus came to a full and complete
stop, Rye left the bus and she saw Obsidian who was a big man, young, nearly bearded with dark thick
hair (Butler 409). It was unusual because the Obsidian was wearing a Los Angeles Police Department
uniform even though LAPD had been dismantled many years ago, and replaced with neighborhood
watchmen along with armed men. Police officers, in today s world, either male or female, are assumed
to be indestructible even though we know that they get hurt some times in their line of work. Also,
they are believed to be trustworthy and dependable for our needs. After Obsidian and Rye were
driving in their car and were disturbed by the un named man and woman who ran out of a

Peace Like a River Essay
Life can be viewed as a battle field, a constant fight between good and evil. In Leif Enger s Peace Like

the good and evil characters, and though based around family, love, and brotherhood, the novel mainly
focused on the conflict between these characters.
This student felt that it was fair to classify the Lands along with Roxanna Cowley, The Shultzs and Dr.

  • 2. The Xbox 360 And Wii Video games have been around for many years and have slowly developed into a common hobby for many young adults. In fact, more than 1.2 billion people are playing video games worldwide. The original gaming console by Magnavox has evolved tremendously over the last decade and has been developed by many different companies. Although there is an innumerable amount of consoles in the world, two iconic consoles are the Microsoft s XBOX 360 and the Nintendo s Wii. The XBOX 360 and Wii are two very popular gaming consoles that are different in appearance, the applications and services they provide, and the amount of games and accessories they each have available. When compared to each other, the XBOX 360 and Wii have multiple differences when it comes to the way each console looks. The Nintendo Wii is a very small and compact device. The console developers managed to keep the Wii as small as possible by incorporating only one Universal Serial Bus also known as a USB port. The Wii console is available in a variety of colors, but the most common and standard color is white. Compared to the small size and compact aspects of the Wii, the XBOX 360 is extremely different. The XBOX is close in size to a toaster oven and can be purchased in black and white. Unlike the Wii, the XBOX has multiple USB ports. When designing the XBOX 360, Microsoft kept the gamer in mind and tried to provide them with an easy and resourceful device. The overall appearance of both consoles varies and depending ... James Shin Hoo is the perfect candidate as his murderer, He is full of resentment, selfishness, and a bitter attitude. James Shin Hoo is the probable murderer. In the book, James Shin Hoo Claims he has an airtight alibi for the night the body was found dead. He says that he was in his restaurant. However it never states in the book that Sam Westing was killed the night he was found dead. James Shin Hoo easily could have killed Sam Westing before the night he was found dead. • 4. House Of The Seven Gables Metaphors The House of the Seven Gables is a metaphorical, symbolic, and romantic. The house and the characters are all symbols for something greater and can be linked back to society. These symbols still have influence today, because the problems the Pyncheon family faced still goes on today. That problem that plagued the family for generation is greed. Indeed, Greed is the main crisis in the story. The curse of Colonel Pyncheon affected the entire family for generations. Judge Pyncheon continued this curse by acting upon his greed. This leads to him dying in the same why the Colonel did. This whole thing started when Matthew Maule s land became ...exceedingly desirable in the eyes of a prominent and powerful personage (Hawthorne 5). That powerful ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The two of them also represent something else. They represent all the good and bad that you can inherit from your ancestors. It s true, you may get their wealth and assets, but if you are unlucky, you are almost certain to get their debts as well. Poor Hephzibah represents the unlucky inheritor. She lost her wealth and fallen to a working class state. Her situation is the perfect symbol for economic change. She was once an aristocrat, as she refers to herself as a woman instead of a lady, who is forced to work in a store in her own house because of her loss of wealth. She begins to feel hatred for the wealthy because of this, for what good end, in the wisdom of providence, does that women live. Must the whole world toil, that the palms of her hands may be kept white and delicate? (Hawthorne 55). This is ironic because Hephzibah was once wealthy herself, But I was born a lady, and have always lived one no matter in what narrowness of means, always a lady. (Hawthorne 45). To feel bitterness for the person, who she used to be, shows how far Hephzibah has fallen and how important money is. Luckily, money didn t affect her morality completely as she immediately regrets her thinking. Of course, this wouldn t be the only time that Hephzibah s morality would be ... • 5. Army Signal Corps Started on June 21, 1860 and formally recognized as a branch of the US military on March 3, 1863, the Signal Corps of the United States Army has had a varied and honored history. Although it began simply by today s standards, with the use of flags and torches at its inception, through contemporary times it continues to innovate and embrace technology in order to keep commanders informed and warfighters communicating. What started as the vision of one man in the mid nineteenth century has transformed today into an entire branch composed of tens of thousands of Soldiers, Noncommissioned Officers, Warrants Officers, and Commissioned Officers. The US Army Signal Corps has had a direct impact on every conflict fought since the civil war, including ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The US Army Signal Corps sent training teams to Vietnam, as well as provided training for Vietnamese officers in the US. Communist insurgent groups began attacking in South Vietnam, killing two Americans in 1959. It was during this time that the Army began using atmospheric scatter technologies, bouncing radio waves off different layers of the atmosphere in order to communicate beyond line of sight up to 400 miles away. (3) This system was modified to form the tactical communications backbone for ground troops, where standard Army multi channel radios were utilized in addition to the new troposcatter radios. Throughout the Vietnam Conflict, though, communication between the geographically separated ground units and camps was improved through the introduction of better radio equipment and radio retransmit systems. The milestone achieved in the Vietnam Conflict, from a signal perspective, was the propagation of high quality commercial communications to the Soldier in the field. In the years following the Vietnam Conflict and the draft, the Army downsized yet again, contracting to an all volunteer force. In July of 1973, the Army placed all of its branch schools under the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), and the Army consolidated its signal training to its training site at Fort Gordon, Georgia. • 6. The Alaska Earthquake Research Paper An earthquake with a magnitude of 9.2 occurred in the northwestern state of Alaska in 1964. It was so powerful that it made fishing boats in Louisiana, which is a southeastern state in the U.S., sink. Magnitude is the amount of energy that s given off during an earthquake. What exactly is an earthquake? Our planet has four main layers, which are: the inner core, outer core, mantle, and crust. The inner core is the center, or middle, of Earth. The crust is the top layer, and it s the layer we walk on. Both the mantle s top area and the entire crust have many pieces in them, kind of like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. The pieces that make up the crust and mantle are called tectonic plates. They re always slowly moving, and they can slide past each other or even bump into one another. The edges of these pieces, or plates, are called plate boundaries. They have lots of faults, which are the surfaces where they slip past each other, and these faults are where most earthquakes happen. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the plate moves far enough, a fault unsticks, or breaks apart the edges, which causes an earthquake. Basically, earthquakes are what happens when two plates suddenly bump into one another or slide past each other, usually along a fault. The reason the earth shakes during an earthquake is because of stored energy. When the edges are stuck together but the plates continue to move, the energy that would usually make the pieces slide past each other becomes stored or saved. When the rough edges unstick, this stored energy is released in every direction in seismic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Violent Index Crimes The city of Boston experienced a momentous spike in violent crimes from the years 2004 to 2006. Violent Index crimes consist of robbery, aggravated assault, forcible rape, non negligent manslaughter and murder. These crimes, predominately robberies and assaults committed with guns, rose by nine percent; the percentage of homicides also increased by 23. The communities experiencing these crimes were mainly those of minorities such as Dorchester, Mattapan and Roxbury. Abruptly, the residents of Boston began losing faith in the Boston Police Department and their capabilities to keep them safe. In order to gain back civility Commissioner Davis and the Boston Police Department enforced a policing program called Safe Street Teams. SST officers were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They implemented community outreaches to deter the population from crime in a positive way rather than through fear or punishment and they increased surveillance and security through their SSTs. The study does not reflect Rational Choice Theory because the SSTs are attempting to control crime through fear, classical theories do not apply to this study. However, it does reflect Routine Activities Theory. Routine Activity is defined as crime and victimization are highest in places where three factors come together in time and place: motivated offenders, suitable or attractive targets and absence of a guardian, (Intro to Criminology, page 70). In these urban areas all three factors certainly come into play. Motivated offenders such as gangs or mislead youth, attractive targets such as places with broken locks (that the SSTs repaired) and before the SSTs there was an absence of a constant guarding authorities only coming when called for specific crimes. According to this study, the Neoclassical approach is more successful in crime prevention of all sorts whether personal, property, etc. because crime is not black and white. There are always conditions to consider when convicting someone of a crime such as be age, mental capacity and number of offenses. Classical is far too broad to properly and fairly deter ... • 8. Violence on Television Essay quot; There was murderers going around killing lots of people and stealing jewelry. quot; This quote comes from the mouth of an eight year old girl after watching the evening news on television. The eight year old girl claims that she is afraid quot;when there is a murder near because you never know if he could be in town quot; (Cullingford, 61). A recent report from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) pools evidence from over 2,500 studies within the last decade on over 100,000 subjects from several nations to show that the compiled evidence of television s influence on behavior is so quot;overwhelming quot; that there is a consensus in the research community that quot;violence on television does lead to aggressive ... Even the American Medical Association agrees that the quot;link between televised violence and later aggressive behavior warrants a major organized cry of protest from the medical profession quot; (Palmer, 122). The issue of the public s infatuation with television can be paralleled with that of a young child and his desire for candy and quot;junk foods. quot; The child enjoys eating such foods, though they produce the harmful effects of rotting away at his teeth. With a parent to limit his intake of such harmful sweets, however, the child is protected from their damage. Similarly, the American public

  • 10. Essay special education CONCEPTS AND DEFINITIONS OF DISABILITY The contemporary conception of disability proposed in the WHO International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) views disability as an umbrella term for impairments, activity limitations and participation restrictions. Disability is the interaction between individuals with a health condition (e.g. cerebral palsy, Down syndrome or depression) and personal and environmental factors (e.g. negative attitudes, inaccessible transportation, or limited social supports). Long ago there was great confusion over the meaning of terms such as impairment, handicap, or disability. Measurements of quality of life extend the disability focus beyond the ability to perform activities of daily living to include a broad range of functioning (work, home, play) and also the person s feelings of satisfaction and well being. This is necessarily a qualitative and subjective concept, judged by the patient in terms of the extent to which they are able to do the things they wish to do. In this medical context, quality of life is distinct from wealth or possessions, and to amke this clear you may see the term health related quality of life. Reflecting these evolving ideas, the WHO revised its Impairment, Disability and Handicap triad in 2001, re naming it the International Classification of Function (ICF). This classification system provides codes for the complete range of functional states; codes cover body structures and functions, impairments, activities and participation in society. The ICF also considers contextual factors that may influence activity levels, so function is viewed as an interaction between health conditions (a disease or injury) and the context in which the person lives (both physical environment and cultural norms relevant to the disease). It establishes a common language for describing functional states that can be used in comparing across diseases and countries. The ICF therefore uses positive language, so that activity and participation ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

British novelist, Lawrence Durrell once quoted, Travel can be one of the most rewarding forms of introspection. The reason I enjoy traveling is because it takes me on a journey for finding my inner self. Before traveling, I ve always been closed minded at how I viewed the world, but once I got a bigger look at how the world works, my thoughts and I, myself have changed. It all begins on a sweltering day in Schertz, Texas. My mom had received a phone call that was certain to come at some point. The person on the other side of the phone informed her that we would have to travel to Turkey and live there for 2 years. Since I was 5 years old at the time, I thought traveling to foreign countries every now and then was normal for every family. There were trucks coming and going, suit case zippers zipping, and chaos all around me. One month later, I m was on a plane headed to this unknown country that was too far away for the impatient self that I am. Eager to march out of the plane, I was at last at the final destination. As I looked around the Adana Airport, people looked different and their clothing was divergent as they wore dilapidated shirts and pants. How do we get those dollars out of the prison system and back into the public coffers where the can be better used? Once again the signs seem to point to rehabilitation and crime prevention. Why should we focus our attention on the youth of our nation? I think the answer to that is plain to see and that answer is crime prevention programs targeted towards youth. If we can prevent the first crime from happening we don t lose yet another precious life to a downward spiral of violence and crime. High School consists of all different experiences. Sports have a huge impact on culture in many countries, but America has uniquely created and enjoyed its own. Obviously, sports such as football have a tremendous affect on American culture. The Football Friday Night tradition starts in high school and continues into adulthood with college ball on Saturdays and professional ball on Sundays. High school reflects the adult experience. • 31. Bronx High School Of Science Stokely Carmichael Kwame Toure, better known as Stokely Carmichael, was one of the most prominent civil rights figures in our history. Born in Trinidad, he became a citizen at the age of 13. Stokely and his family moved to an Italian and Jewish neighborhood where he was one of the few African Americans. He attended one of the most prestigious high schools, Bronx High School of Science where he remained one of the few faces of color among his white elite counterparts. Carmichael became very popular around his classmates, attending parties, dating white women, and playing sports. While Stokely was aware of the racial tensions that ensued, he never realized until later in life how differently he was perceived from his white counterparts. One evening upon graduating high school, Stokely finally felt his calling to join the movement. Carmichael was watching a television newscast that showed young African Americans protesting the racial injustices. When I first heard about the Negroes sitting in at lunch counters I thought they were a bunch of publicity hounds. He watched as these people were knocked off stools, ketchup thrown in their hair, and sugar thrown in their eyes. After this he decided to join the Congress of Racial Equality. The Congress of Racial Equality, otherwise known as CORE, was a leading civil rights activist groups. The Pursuit of Happyness Essay Social stereotypes and Happiness The Pursuit of Happyness 11/21/2012 Instructor: Prof. Kristin Little Author: Tareq Naseer Alsamarh Social stereotypes and happiness The story of the movie The Pursuit of Happyness directed by Gabriele Muccino portrays a family who struggles with finding enough money to pay taxes and afford living expenses. The movie takes a place in San Francisco during the 80s. The two main characters are the father Chris Gardner and his son Christopher, Will Smith and Jaden Smith respectively. Gardner tries to support his family. But every time he attempts to make things better, they always end up worse. Gardner in the story wonders on how to be happy? He earns his money by selling the bone density ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In another perspective, fatherhood for Gardner is like a job for him. Because he loses his wife, he needs to provide joy, fun and help for his son Christopher which is not an easy job to do. Those fathers, who spend more time with their children, have a better life than others who spend most of their time working and gaining money. However, being a father as a single parent like Chris gives him the enthusiasm to do his best and replace his wife s role to have a better life with his son. Yet, this decreases the happiness that Gardner possesses. According to Scott Coltrane, a sociologist at the University of California, points out that Father s style of parenting has changed too. Fathers are beginning to look more like mothers (qtd. in Cullen and Grossman). Before Linda leaves the family, she works double shifts to make more money to afford the living expenses and to help her husband. So Chris is the one who takes more care of their son than the mother, Linda. Gardner seems to be happier being close to his son. There are many scenes in the movie that show how Gardner and Christopher are happy of being together. Nonetheless, there is only one scene that Christopher not even misses his mother; instead he asks did mom leave because of me? (The Pursuit of Happyness). This indicates that Gardner does a great job of being a single parent that makes his son, not remembering his mother. For fathers, home ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. How Peacekeeping Operations Evolved Over Time Essay International peacekeeping efforts are a relatively new feature in military strategy. They have their roots in earlier conflicts, most notably the First Schleswig War between Denmark and Prussia in 1849 1850. A combined force of 3,800 troops from both Sweden and Norway with the intent of maintaining law and order and keeping the peace were assembled, while an armistice was worked out. This set the precedent for peacekeeping operations that would become more commonplace in the twentieth century. After the First World War, the League of Nations was established, the predecessor of what would later become the United Nations. The League was established in large part to hopefully avoid another world war as devastating as the Great War, as it was called. The League of Nations ultimately disbanded, giving way to the United Nations, but peacekeeping operations increased and evolved to encompass broader and more complex conflicts, including civil wars, which were ignored by the League out of respect for a nation s sovereignty. This brief summary will address how peacekeeping operations evolved over time and how these operations, or a specific operation, shapes the view of peacekeeping operations by the American people. The League of Nations was established as a means to ensure international peace and security through collective consultation and action. The early peacekeeping operations largely depended on precedents, which established the rules and strategies to be followed in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. Speech Sounds Octavia Butler Analysis Octavia Butler, the author of Speech Sounds and many other short stories, is a well known author for her feminist point of view which might be attributed to her father who died when she was young and her mother taking on the role as the father figure as well as the mother figure. After the bus stop, Valerie Rye, the protagonist in this short story who goes by Rye for a lot of the short story, met Obsidian who Rye assumes his name to be; also, he used to be a LAPD officer. Rye immediately trusts Obsidian to drive her to Pasadena to see what is left of her family. In Octavia Butlers Speech Sounds, the men and women have reverse gender roles throughout this short story than we are used to because men in our world tend to have more power over women. After the bus came to a full and complete stop, Rye left the bus and she saw Obsidian who was a big man, young, nearly bearded with dark thick hair (Butler 409). It was unusual because the Obsidian was wearing a Los Angeles Police Department uniform even though LAPD had been dismantled many years ago, and replaced with neighborhood watchmen along with armed men. Police officers, in today s world, either male or female, are assumed to be indestructible even though we know that they get hurt some times in their line of work. Also, they are believed to be trustworthy and dependable for our needs. After Obsidian and Rye were driving in their car and were disturbed by the un named man and woman who ran out of a ... In the novel, there was a constant fight taking place between the good and evil characters, and though based around family, love, and brotherhood, the novel mainly focused on the conflict between these characters. This student felt that it was fair to classify the Lands along with Roxanna Cowley, The Shultzs and Dr. Nokes as the good characters. After the two murders Superintendent Holgren began to treat Jeremiah differently, as he allowed his opinion to determine whether or not Jeremiah deserved the job. Holgren made work even more difficult and disagreed with everything that Jeremiah did. Jeremiah, being the calm person that he was, never retaliated with negative words. He allowed Holgren to mistreat him, even in front of the staff and students in the school. Holgren finally resorted to firing Jeremiah in front of everyone, but Jeremiah simply touched his face and walked away. The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing (Budha). Jeremiah did nothing but simply left things in God s hands. He allowed Holgren to make a fool out of himself and surprisingly, he healed Holgren s face from those unsightly sores. Once again good triumphed over evil.
