Novel and rare sudden onset stimuli are known to attract attention in different situations. Previously
Yantis Jonides (1990) have shown novel sudden onsets capture attention mainly when attention is
diffuse, and Neo Chua (2006) have shown rare sudden onsets capture attention so long as attention is
not already pre deployed to a stationary target. The current study aims to examine the interaction
between rarity of a novel, sudden onset and attention pre deployment by cues or stationary targets, and
how this interaction affects the attentional capture of novel sudden onsets. In doing so, a better
understanding of how these stimuli affect attentional processes may be established. Based upon the
experimental findings, it is proposed that when a sudden onset stimulus is both rare and novel, the
attentional capture processes when perceiving these stimuli are influenced by perceptual load and
modes of attention. Implications of these findings are discussed further in the paper.

Bierce breaks up the story by firstly explaining what is happening at that moment, it then moves to a
description of Farquhar, and lastly the story moves to Farquhar s distorted perception of his reality and
his death. The story is well descripted which helps the reader understand what is going on, the
descriptions also allow the reader to know what is going on around Farquhar and what he is seeing.
The story is written in third person narrative, which is an omniscient narrator. As a reader, the narrator
gave lots of information but left a big chunk of information out. Throughout the whole story, we get
all our information from the narrator. The only thing the narrator did not inform us about is that half
the of the story was not real. I believe this was done to show the readers that your perception is not

who has childlike tendencies. Sook refers to Capote as Buddy throughout the story. Buddy and Sook
share a home with other relatives, who throughout the story, berate them with harsh words and are

unbreakable friendship between the two. Capote manages to pen a captivating memoir of his last
Christmas with Sook using an engaging writing style with an enthralling use of vivid language. One of
the ways Capote captivates his readers is by using vivid language to make us feel joyful, giddy and
excited. My dancing shadow rollicks on the walls; our voices rock the chinaware; we giggle: as if
unseen hands were tickling us (23). Notably, the way this passage is composed gives the reader a
sense of silliness as we imagine the auditory impulsively of loud singing. His whimsical language is
taken a step further with his use of ...unseen hands were tickling us (23), as it makes the reader
visualize being tickled until they are out of breath. Another way he uses imagery is with, ...the
beginnings of dawn splash us like cold water... (36). This makes the reader feel as though they are
being abruptly splashed with cold water. Capote wanted to grasp the urgency of waking up Christmas
morning and capture the excitement of not wanting to make waste of time. Capote uses vivid language
to make us feel cheerful; likewise, he also uses it to make us feel the heaviness of heartache within the

Employee Holidays
Most employees, whether part time or full time are legally entitled to 5.6 weeks of paid annual leave.
More annual leave may be agreed as part of an employee s contract. A week of leave should allow
