As I read Black Beauty, I thought about how lucky I am to live in a permanent, loving home.
Anna Sewell is the Author of Black Beauty. Her purpose for writing this story was to tell the
readers to appreciate their loving and caring families. The story Black Beauty, goes through Black
Beauty s life in his point of view. He goes through a lot of good times and bad times but never
loses hope that things will get better. This story taught me to never forget how fortunate I am to

One of my least favorite scenes in this story was when Black Beauty saw Ginger pulling a
carriage. She was looking very worn out and sick. It was only when Ginger s carriage stopped
next to his that he noticed she was in terrible condition. He talked to her and she told him that
her Master s plans was just to work her until she drops dead. She even said how she wished she
would just die already so she could be out of her misery. Black Beauty was heartbroken by this,
and so was I. This is one of those scenes in the book when I think Anna Sewell was trying to
communicate to her readers how unlucky the horses were back then. By telling her readers about
the cruelty of Ginger s owner, she was also communicating how lucky we all are to not be in those
kinds of cruel situations.
Horses are one of the most loving and loyal creatures. Unfortunately, some people don t see that
side of them. They only see the aggressive side. What they don t know is that by treating them
like machines, they re causing the aggressiveness. Horses are incredibly loving and willing to do
what you ask of them; but only if you love, and care for them back. It makes me so sad to see
horses in pain. It is also a tragedy that because these people are mistreating their horses they don t
know what it is like to have a strong bond with them. Having a strong connection and affection for a
horse is one of the best kinds of love.

The patient I cared for today, was admitted into the NICU on October 17th. He was experiencing
respiratory distress, has breathed (aspirated) meconium into the lungs around the time of birth. The
neonate had stabilized, so the nurse and I were preparing for the family to discharge from the
hospital. The immediate needs that were verbalized by the patient were hunger cries and soiled
diaper/ angry cries. Immediate needs from the family were instruction on how much formula to feed
the baby and circumcision care once discharged home. During my clinical experience, the patient
experienced pain from the circumcision process. The healthcare team members alleviated the
physical suffering by administrating lidocaine pain medication and giving the baby sugar water. I
think the only improvement that I would make to these interventions would be to administer the
lidocaine earlier so that it could be more effective in the patient s pain management. Long term
needs for the patient were speech therapy in order to improve the baby s feeding technique,
infection prevention, and teaching measures for the parents. The needs could be met through
referral to a speech therapist upon discharge from the hospital, teaching family members proper
handwashing, and educating parents on subject matters.
