Although George Orwell is more commonly known for his works such as 1984 or Animal Farm,
another one of his great short stories is Shooting and Elephant. The story discusses a time in which
George is faced with a difficult decision dealing with what the people near him wanted and what he

Being born in the Machine that is imperialism, showed Orwell the flaws of the politically oppressing a
group of people. He was born to Eric Arthur Blair, but was quickly taken to England and never had
much contact with his father until he retired and returned to England. He was sent to boarding school
and there he began to realize the difference between having money and not. After leaving the boarding
school, the next stop for orwell was college in which he got a scholarship to both Eaton and
Wellington college. This was a huge success for him but landed him in a proverbial writers block. He
wanted to continue his studies but his family was not able to financially help him. So instead he
decided to follow in his father s footsteps and joined the imperial guard. These five years were said to
be awful for George, but it is where he got the inspiration to write this short story. Orwell had a
difficult time after his stint in the guard as well. Coming out, he landed a job as a dishwasher and
struggled to keep himself afloat as he tried to get many stories published. He and his wife then moved
to Spain and joined the civil war that was brewing in the country at the time. He was nearly fatally
wounded from a gunshot he received while he was in the militia, but he survived. Unfortunately, he
was now labeled as a traitor and had to flee the country. When returning to England the couple
adopted a son and George contracted tuberculosis. He had to fight it throughout the rest of his life
leaving him sickly all the time. At this point in Orwell s life, he began to settle down. He became a
critic and took on a few writing assignments until he landed a job as a BBC producer. During this time
WWII was happening just a few countries away and he found himself more of a propagandist rather

press, despite the bill having strong support in the House of Commons. Will and Kate, the publicly
popular and more politically savvy pair, pull strings (with questionable morality) to keep the palace
together, both for themselves and posterity. Prince Harry is off running around on the town, drinking
too much and continuing his famous shenanigans, until he meets and falls in love with Jess, a
republican who is strongly against the monarchy. One of Jess s previous boyfriends threatens to
release nude pictures of her to the gossip rags to extort money out of the royal family. This problem
could be easily solved by the passage of the bill in Parliament that Charles is still blocking, even as he

Poverty, a faulty and inadequate education system, police brutality, drugs and violence are a few of the
issues that plague the community that raised me. At a very young age, I was exposed to all these social
issues and they have shaped and influenced who I am today. Being a victim to these issues, growing
up was not easy, but I always hoped that I could make a change. As a young Mexican American
woman, daughter of immigrant parents and victim to numerous social issues complicating my ability
to succeed, I was never sure how I would ever be able to accomplish anything, all I knew is that I

Problem Statement: In many school districts throughout the United States, Black males are more
likely than any other group to be suspended and expelled from school (Meier, Stewart, England,
1989). Youth of color are disproportionately likely to grow up in poor, disadvantaged neighborhoods
characterized by high levels of psychosocial stressors and inadequate supportive resources; Poverty
and racial minority status correlate with an increased risk of high school dropout, teen pregnancy,
substance abuse, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs)(Ssewamala, et. al, 2011). Affected with
such a threatening collection of social and economic adversities, it is amazing that the experience of
Black males in education, in relation to attainment and gauges of academic performance have not been
analyzed more closely. I propose to do a qualitative research study that explores: 1. Educational
attachment in the Black male community in the Bronx. On the rise, or failing below the average? 2.
What are the barriers to educational attainment for Black men living in the Bronx? 3. If there are

Education is an influential and impactful topic that is always a subject on the minds of the public and
for politicians. I believe that education would have an overall beneficial component because when
more people are educated in a book self and street self manner, they are more likely to be better
prepared for what the world has in store for them. So, I agree with James Heckman, the known Nobel
Price winning economist, who proposes that the earlier that kids are able to receive proper money to
obtain an education, the better return for giving back to the community and spreading efficiency in
those that they may interact with in the world (Smith, History of U.S. policies on child care, 2015).
So, even positive reinforcement, which has been learned in various psychology courses, comes into
