Theme Of Disillusionment In The Great Gatsby
Robert Frost once said, Nothing gold can stay . This idea was clearly elucidated in F. Scott
Fitzgerald s, The Great Gatsby, a novel focused on Jay Gatsby, a famously wealthy young man
and his never changing love for Daisy. Set in the 1920s, the thought of moving west continued
to prosper as many Americans hoped to gain wealth and have an opportunity to set their own
path to greatness. However, many struggled in achieving their American Dreams and constantly
wish for a time when America could revert back to its truest beauty. Gatsby is portrayed as a
character who is fixated on his seventeen year old dream to marry the prize of his life. On the
other hand, Fitzgerald challenges this and instead proves his view of the reality of America
through his style of writing. The reality that nothing in the past can stay but most Americans
ignore it, foolishly still believing that what was once innocent and beautiful can exist forever.
Therefore, Fitzgerald s theme that disillusionment had plagued Americans, blinding them from the
reality and corruption, is often conveyed through the use of repetition, verbs, and imagery, to
prove this point. One way that Fitzgerald proved his idea of disillusionment was by repeating one
specific word in a sentence. He often uses it to represent a certain duration of time. For example,
he repeats the word beyond twice in a sentence when describing Gatsby s expectations of Daisy, It
had gone beyond her, beyond everything (95). This clearly

The M4 Sherman was the main tank used by the United States during World War II. The M4

North Africa. Sherman tanks were not as armored as the Panzer IV. Armored Fighting Vehicles, or
tanks, might have been the best known fighters of World War II. The purpose of tanks is to
provide support to infantry and act as a vehicle for large scale artillery and armored protection. The

Kant s Views On Freedom Essay
In the following paper, I will outline how my understanding of freedom has changed since reading
Immanuel Kant s An Answer to the Question: What is Enlightenment? Firstly, I will state the
views that I held on freedom before I read the text, framing them within a political context by
labelling myself as a civil libertarian and explaining what that means. Subsequently, I will provide
my interpretation of Kant s views on freedom through the positive and negative senses and how,
for Kant, that there ought to be a distinction between the public and private use of reason, as it
constitutes a necessary limit on freedom in order to foster enlightenment. Then, I will outline how
Kant s views on freedom have changed my understanding of freedom, stating that they have only
strengthened it, though it has taken on a new degree of nuance as I agree that there ought to be
such a distinction between the two uses of reason. I will also disagree with Kant by arguing that
the citizenry must have the right to dissolve an authoritarian government, as it is necessary to
preserve enlightenment. Finally, I will highlight a paradox that presents itself in Kant s writings,
highlighting it through the contemporary example of Edward Snowden s disruptive usage of his
public reason. Prior to reading the text, my views on freedom were framed around my experience
with regards to paying attention to politics. I have always fancied fashioning my own viewpoints
on a slew of topics, and freedom is

Religion Based Laws And Islamic Law Essay
In much of Northern Africa (e.g. Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt and Libya), Islamic law exists
as the foundation of these regional countries. Within many of these predominantly Islamic African
nations, political law and Islamic law intertwine. With this being said, all homosexual conduct is
criminalized in Northern countries such as Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt and Libya. Morality
laws, which are religion based laws, tremendously limit the freedom of expression of LGBT
individuals ( Sexual Orientation Laws In The World Overview ). People are detained for infraction
of Islamic values. They are often harassed, arrested, and tortured (e.g. whipped, beaten, burned)
whether for a confession or simply as punishment. There is no regulatory order of conduct for these
police operations, as it is simply stated that they are to defend their countries cultural values (In a
Time of Torture). With the unjust enforcement of brutal social control upon civilians, one can begin
to understand the obstacles of participation in the African LGBT Rights Movement. Especially in
countries where the law not only excludes the protection of LGBT individuals, but outrightly
condemns it, little to no public participation in the movement is observed. As previously noted, 38
of 54 African countries criminalize homosexuality. While the penal code of African countries
commonly entails imprisonment for a variable amount of years (up to life term), in some countries,
the death penalty is

Americ Pain Vs Gain
America: Pain vs Gain The late 19th century of America is best known for the increase of goods
made by machine. Prior to this movement, industries were run primarily by highly skilled
craftspeople. As 19th century America progressed, it became increasingly difficult to make a
living as a craftsperson; it became easier to work in a factory under wage labor. This movement
was viewed quite differently from many different people. There were a great deal of positive
aspects, but a great deal of negative ones as well. Many historical figures documented their views
of this movement in writing; among these are Andrew Carnegie with Andrew Carnegie Hails the
Triumph of America in 1885, and Henry George with Henry George Dissects the Paradox of
Capitalist Growth in 1879. Among the people who viewed the rise of industrial America as great
was Andrew Carnegie. In Andrew Carnegie Hails the Triumph of America, Carnegie lists ethnicity,
equality, education, and the superiority of the conditions under which [America] has developed (2)
as the causes that led to the rapid growth of America. Throughout his essay, Carnegie continuously
praises the conditions of industrial America and looks forward to the wonderful future it holds. At
no point in his writing does Carnegie take into consideration the hardships that the rise of industrial
America could cast upon people; he merely viewed the positive aspects. Unlike Carnegie, Henry
George addresses both the positive and the negative

A Short Note On Engine Aircraft And Its Impact On The...
The B707 was the first aircraft developed by Boeing in 1958, it is a narrow body , mid size and a
four turbo fan engine aircraft ( Pratt Whitney ) . Some people call it ( seven oh seven ) and it
has different modules ( series ) that contains different capacity from 140 189 passengers .The
Boeing 787 was produced in 2007 , it is a long range , wide body , twin turbo fan engine ( GEnx
or Rolls Royce ) aircraft . Passenger s seat varies from 242 335 dependant on the series of the
aircraft. Of course both aircrafts varies from the internal structures ,but almost the same design for
the outer structure (body shape ) , and I ll demonstrate the differences and similarities between both
aircrafts , from structure design to the innovations made to the B787 , that surely made us look at
the Boeing industry in a different perspectives.

Pre-Litigation Research Paper
Pre Litigation: What Happens Before Filing a Lawsuit?
Going to court is usually the last step in a long process of trying to settle a dispute. There are
usually several steps taken before a lawsuit is even filed with the courts. These steps help both
parties prepare for the lawsuit. It also opens up opportunities to settle the dispute without the need to
go to court.
Notice
When one party has a complaint or dispute with another party, the first step in the process is formal
notification. This often comes in the form of a notice letter sent by the injured party s attorney to
the other party, his attorney, and his insurance company. This notice outlines what the dispute is
about. It may also request information on insurance coverage, policy ... Show more content on

The demand can take several forms. It may be a claim that goes to the other party s insurance
company. It may be a letter going straight to the other party demanding compensation for the injury.
The demand may be a simple letter or it may be a multi page document with copies of the
information gathered during the investigation.
Trying to Settle
The formal demand usually brings an opportunity to settle the case before filing suit. In many cases,
these settlement negotiations are informal, involving discussions between the attorneys, insurance
representatives, and clients. It may be a time when one party makes a settlement offer.
Counteroffers and settlement rejections can also happen.
More formal dispute resolution solutions are also available, including mediation. With mediation, a
neutral third party works with the injured party and the defendant to reach a negotiated settlement.
If a case cannot be settled, the next step is to file a formal lawsuit.

Jeanette Winterson s Story Of A Mother Story
In Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal, Jeanette Winterson reflects on why she had to
become a writer. Winterson s, alternative to not writing her life story would be losing herself in
the narrow mesh of her adoptive mother s story (698): Winterson experiences a power struggle
between her adoptive mother s narrative and her needs to preserve her personal story. Winterson s
mother story is one of severe unhappiness and resentment, or an unlived life as Winterson describes
it (695). Through her adoption, Winterson was thrust into a dysfunctional familyand suffered
extensive abuse at the hands of her angry mother. Winterson alludes the strength she has been
forced to gain in order to survive. In a chaotic and abusive household, she was forced to become
a bare knuckle fighter to endure the pandemonium (696). As Winterson says about her family
dynamic, the one who wins is the one who hits the hardest (696). Winterson s life experiences
portray a struggle to exist as she suggests, she has been fighting alone her whole life without
anything to help her or back her up. Often being forced to fend for herself, thus revealing her need
to preserve her story and prevent it from drowning in the tragic narrative of her mother. While
Winterson s descriptive literary devices paint a picture of the pain and suffering she endured as an
adopted child, the reader may struggle while interpreting the true source of her childhood pain.

Legalizing Marijuana Essay
What exactly is marijuana? Marijuana, also known as pot or hemp, is a naturally grown
substance that contains THC. THC changes how the brain works and gives the user a high that
relieves many different pains and even helps erase bad memories. The hemp plant can be found
in just about any place, but has to be kept in heat. Marijuana is from a naturally grown plant so
why not be able to use it legally? Well, there are many reasons against the legalization of
marijuana and there are also many very good reasons to legalize it for medical and recreational
use. So to the government and everyone against legalizing marijuana, too bad! It s natural and
people are going to smoke no matter what the laws are, so why not just make it legal? Making the...

In strict medical terms, marijuana is far safer than many foods we commonly consume. For
example, eating ten raw potatoes can result in a toxic response...It is physically impossible to eat
enough marijuana to induce death. (Young, Francis 1) Obviously if alcohol and cigarettes can be
sold, marijuana can be too.
A massive number of people who smoke marijuana would be willing to pay just to smoke, resulting
in making profit. The number of people globally who had used cannabis in 2008 is estimated
between 129 and 191 million, or 2.9 percent to 4.3 percent of the world s population ages fifteen
to sixty four. (World Drug Report 9) Pot smokers are willing to pay to smoke while the drug is
illegal, so they would pay to smoke if it was legal too. All of the people who would pay to smoke
marijuana would result in a huge profit which would benefit our government and country. Now
think about some other reasons that marijuana should be legal. One of the big reasons it should be
legalized is for the people who use it medically.
The people who are terminally ill or have a serious illness have so much trouble getting what they
want and need just to feel good and live life the way they want without all their pain. If marijuana
was legal, these people wouldn t have to go through tests and stages just to get a natural drug that

Glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) is an uncommon developmental cyst of the jaw thought to arise

a tendency to subepithelial fibrous tissue formation, multiple cysts and the absence of

Psychology And The Legal System. Paper 1. With Recent...
Psychology and the Legal System
Paper 1With recent legislative issues making the news, one topic that has received a great deal of
attention is that of indeterminate sentencing. This is the imposition of a sentence with no
mandatory release date or set period of sentence to be served. Instead, one s sentence length is
determined by the inmate s conduct while in prison. Upon successful completion of requirements
the inmate may be returned to society, but it is possible that they will be kept behind bars for the
remainder of his/her natural life. There are many issues that have come to light with indeterminate
and determinate sentencing, such as how successful was the inmate? Is there really rehabilitation
for sex offenders or drug ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The problem with indeterminate sentencing is that it often puts too much power into the hands of
the parole board which then can lead to arbitrary and discriminatory results. It has been seen that
minorities and prisoners without connections receive overly harsh decisions of the parole boards
while less deserving offenders are being released early.(Portman, 2017) Even with some of the
issues at hand indeterminate sentencing is making a comeback. This is now happening even more
as our prisons are becoming overcrowded. In turn, allowing more room for judicial or parole board
discretion. Prosecutors are exercising discretion when they decide which of many arrests to charge
and for what particular crime. Juries exercise discretion in not convicting defendants who killed
under circumstances that may have justified their actions. A jury may opt to exercise discretion
when it deliberates the fate of the alleged perpetrator. Parole boards also have the opportunity to
excise discretion when they decide whether to commute a death sentence to life
imprisonment.(Greene, E., Heilbrun, K. 2014 pg. 10 11) This is being seen in many states where
rehabilitation is available and viewed as a reasonable attainable outcome for offenders.Determinate
sentencing began to spread widely during the 1970s and 1980s and is now the rule in many states.
(Portman, 2017) In the late 1970s, a rising crime rate, concern over individual rights, and a distrust
of the government in the wake of

Comparison of The Crucible And Don t Ask, Don t Tell
In the most publicized gay bashing, the dead body of Adam R. Schindler Jr., an American naval
radioman, was found battered and disfigured in a public toilet in a park in Japan where he had
been serving [Sterngold]. After revealing his homosexuality to his peers in the army, he had been
left unrecognizably mutilated and beaten to death. In response, in 1993, the Clinton administration
initiated Don t Ask, Don t Tell [DADT] which meant that military officers could not investigate a
soldier s sexual preference without reason and a soldier should not voluntarily disclose it
[McGowan 4]. Historically, the US military had never directly banned gays, only their actions of
sodomy, but a change occurred during the World Wars after the Christian

Pre DADT, everything was blamed on them, from ship explosions to natural disasters [Frank 31]
thereby adding to the belief that gay men were hindrances to the military and inferior beings.
Similarly, in Salem, the people first being accused of witchcraft were lower class, unchristian like
women such as Tituba, the slave, and Goody Osbourn, a midwife who had helped in the naissance
of three newborn babies who all shriveled in her hands [Miller 47]. The stereotypical witch is
based on them. They were not highly esteemed in town, and as women were given even less
importance. The villagers were adamant about pursuing witches because they felt the same
sentiment towards the suspects as they did towards the two women; they were destroying their
ideal of a New Jerusalem. In result, the misconception of the cross dressing, AIDS invested gay and
the poor, unchristian female witch promotes the negative policies. The homophobic DADT and the
persecution of witchcraft in The Crucible are established by religious influences in the government.
Christian officials in present day America view their opposition to homosexuality in the armed
forces as part of a larger effort to preserve and expand the Christian character of the military and
the nation [Frank 35], believing that it is a transgression against God and society [Frank 3]. Though
the ban is justified by the excuse that gays weaken the military, the true reasoning behind the policy

Family movie nighttime, the smell of butter and cheese from the popcorn makes me hungry. Pop,

Light out, blankets out, pillows out popcorns out, TV on, it is time for the movie. Every weekend,

Statistics Experiment Essay
Statistics Experiment
For my maths coursework I will be conducting an investigation into statistics. I had a choice for
this coursework of both statistics on year 10 to 11 school children, and facts about them and
also their likes in terms of sport and subjects at school. I chose not to do this project on that
information; instead I chose data on 100 different cars, the reason for this is that I like cars more
and may perhaps pursue it as a career. I did not want to do a project on data that I have no interest in.
The 100 different cars have data under the following headings, Car number in order from 1 to 100,
the make of the car, the price when new of the car, the current second hand price, ... Show more

For my coursework I will be hopefully conducting a total of 3 different investigations into this
survey, though this may change to 2 or 4. My aim is to look for a correlation in the separate
investigations and perhaps if I can draw any conclusions or maybe find a formula or prediction
for a particular investigation that will work for all or most cars. E.g. if from mileage, price when
new and age I can calculate the current second hand price.
My investigation will be:
The frequency of mileage in my sample, if there is a relationship between the second hand price and
age of a car, and finally if there is relationship between the age and percentage loss of a car.
I will be taking a sample of 20 cars; I will take every 5th car in the database. I will show the data in
terms of tables, a tally chart, and by way of bar, and scatter graphs with a line of best fit if
applicable.
To improve my investigation I will take a sample of 5 cars, which will not be included in my final
investigation, but this 5 car sample is to test my investigation techniques, and to allow me to
foresee and problems and practise in investigating statistics.
I will not be able to take all 100 cars and will have to do my investigations on different samples of
the survey, I hope to take 1/5 of the cars, and I will do my investigations on 20 cars. I

The Female Characters Of Women And Prejudice
In War and Peace, the female protagonist Natasha is depicted as beautiful and fresh young
woman who attracts many suitors. However, a close reading of the novel reveals that Natasha s
beauty derives from her inner spirit and liveliness, aspects that disguise her impulsive behavior.
Natasha can get away with her imprudence because her behavior is seen as product of her love
for life and her free spirt, and her beauty and liveliness allow her to do things that were not
socially accepted, such as kissing Boris or visiting Prince Andrew in bed in the middle of the night.
Like Elizabeth from Austen s Pride and Prejudice, Natasha s looks are enhanced by other qualities
such as her ability to sing and dance, her wit and her compassion, in the end showing that what is
perceived as beauty in femalecharacters is a reflection of these characters behavior and interior
qualities.
In War and Peace, Tolstoy creates a female protagonist who, like Elizabeth Bennet from Austen s
Pride and Prejudice, is not at first admired for her physical appearance, but rather for her beauty of
spirit. When we first read about teenager Natasha, the narrator stresses that her attractiveness is not
physical; it is Natasha s joie de vivre that makes her stand out:
The little girl with her black eyes and wide mouth was not pretty but she was full of life. In the
wild dash her bodice had slipped from the bare childish shoulders and the black curls tossed back
in confusion. She had thin bare arms, little legs

Social Inquiry And A Natural Human Activity
Human beings seek a general understanding of their environment or the world around them. This is
what is known as inquiry and it is a natural human activity. People recognize that present
circumstances usually affect the future and as such, they need to make decisions regarding their
present situation to have a better future compared to the present circumstance. Such needs push
them to inquire about both the present and the future situations to develop and give them a better
chance of having a comfortable life. Through social inquiry, people ask questions, they gather the
information and examine the background to most of the important societal events and ideas
(Pollner, 2010).
There exist differences and similarities between social ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Social inquiry is a systematically way of thinking. It is a way that the mind revels if a circumstance
or situation is true or false even when other things point to the same outcome.
Social inquiry is where the situations are broken down and looking at it to determine why such
occurrences happened or took place. Assumptions is what we humans do on a daily basis, not
following it up or trying to understand the circumstance behind it (Greene, 2007). Everyday
assumptions are made mainly because we as individuals have been brought up to believe that
situation or circumstance to be true. Most of the situations are what human beings have been
brought up understanding it that way. Everyday assumptions are made from what human beings
learn on a daily basis. They are based on who people interact with such as environment. As such, the
difference in regard to social inquiry arises. Where everyday assumption depends on what human
beings learn and their interaction to different phenomena, social inquiry tries to understand better
through different methods of research. Another difference between the two is the people
understand. Everyday assumption changes over time. In a certain period, the assumption may mean
something, however, in another period it changes meaning to mean a totally different thing. Social
inquiry however rests its case when a conclusion is reached about the situation or circumstance. The
matter can only be revisited if it is felt that the investigation or

The Ascent Of Mount Ventoux Summary
The Renaissance was a cultural, economic, and political movement that emerged in Italy in the
fifteenth century. The Renaissance marked the leap from the Medieval era to the Modern Age and
brought with it a great cultural transformation, not only of the arts, but also of the sciences, letters
and forms of thought. Francesco Petrarch and Giovanni Pico Della Mirandola were two Renaissance
men who changed the ideals and ways of seeing the world that emerged during the Medieval Age.
In the letter The Ascent of Mount Ventoux , Petrarch describes his human experience when he
climbed Mount Ventoux with his brother and his two servants. The reason why Petrarch wanted
to achieve this goal was for the simple fact of living a personal experience. Petrarch declared that
my only motive was the wish to see what so great an elevation had to offer. This statement allows

In medieval thought, everything revolved around god and the church, where personal motives had
no purpose if they had no relationship with any divine being. Petrarch s personal experience had
no purpose in glorifying or seeking God, but rather in discovering truth and happiness on his own.
This new way of thinking was considered part of the Renaissance because Petrarch uses reason as a
source of knowledge, and seeks the truth through personal reflection and research.
On the other hand, Giovanni had to analyze and question a concept different from Petrarch. For
Giovanni, the idea of Abdala the Sarraceno and Hermes Trismegisto that man is an intermediary
between creatures and interpreter of nature by sense, reason and intelligence, are not enough to
understand the condition of human nature. In the Oration on the Dignity of Man written in 1486,
Giovanni explains to us why man is the most fortunate and prestigious being in the world, and why
the human being is an intermediary between animals and angels

Sam Houston was the president of the new nation, but he knew very quickly that Texas would

Imagery In The Perils Of Indifference By Elie Wiesel
Holocaust survivor and writer, Elie Wiesel in his influential speech The Perils of Indifference,
claims that indifference is the root of all evil and inhumanity all pain and all tragedy has
resulted because of indifference. He supports his claim by highlighting the reason for World
Wars, Civil Wars, Assassinations, Bloodbaths, and Tragedy indifference (Wiesel par. 5) .
Specifically, Wiesel uses imagery to paint an image of what the innocent victims of indifference
experience. The poor children [that] perish because of the indifference in a man s soul; until
they see the children s pain and agony and hear their pleas, until one of them dies because of the
violence, disease and famine, then one will notice the dangers of indifference (Wiesel par. 23) .
Further, the author flashbacks to past events that have left humans without a soul. He mentions
how one day he woke up in a place of eternal infamy, Buchenwald. Remembering the day he is
captured and the day he is free[ed] (Wiesel par. 1) . The problem now is that there [i]s no joy in
his heart; he becomes a victim of indifference the metal torture (Wiesel par. 1) . Wiesel s purpose
is to inform humanity of the dangers indifference holds in order to encourage humans to continue
to hope for a world without indifference no pain, no horror. He establishes a critical tone for
readers by using stylistic devices such as imagery, flashbacks and rhetorical questions in order to
achieve his purpose that indifference is monstrous and dangerous. Wiesel s message about the
inhumanity of indifference and the importance of resistance is still relevant today.
1999 marks the year Elie Wiesel presents the White House with his speech The Perils of
Indifference. He argues that to be indifferent is to be inhumane (Wiesel par 11) . Four years later
genocide in Darfur occurs; the first genocide of the 21st century (Darfur Genocide) . This genocide
claims the lives of at least 300,000 innocent people and displaced 3 million more people (Darfur
Genocide) . Meanwhile, according to Sudan Backgrounder, With the international community

Rhetoric In Socrates The Gorgias
The Gorgias is a dialogue in which Socrates expresses his ideas with others about rhetoric. From
the dialogue, it can be argued that the philosopher is a mortal enemy of rhetoric. He condemns it on
ethical and epistemic grounds. Socrates argues that rhetoric is not a real knowledge because it is
not a legitimate art, and that the teachers of rhetoricare nothing but fraudsters. In addition, he
asserts that rhetoric is ethically bankrupt and its main objective is to gratify the ignorant and
enhance its experts power to practice it. It tends to manipulate ignorant individuals into believing on
imaginative things. Therefore, Socratesargues that it is not real art, because a real art should depict
a purified rationalism and knowledge that maintains the changeless good. As a result, Socrates
draws a sharp line between rhetoric and real art or knowledge.
In his argument with Polus, Socrates seems to provide a level ground for both charges against
rhetoric. Socrates asserts that rhetoric is an emperia and a knack based experience. It is a piece
of flattery whose objective is to gratify and provide pleasure, and that it degenerates ethically

Why Tortoise s Shell Is Not Smooth
Treat others the way you want to be treated is a famous saying that people usually tell children. I
believe this goes perfectly with the story, Why the Tortoise s Shell is Not Smooth because the
Tortoise decided to trick the birds, and the birds ended up tricking the Tortoise. Tortoise was
invited to the people of the sky s feast and ended up changing his name to All of you during his
speech, so then when he asked who the meal was for the sky god said, For all of you. I believe
that the Tortoise shows traits of being dishonest, he also shows that he is a heartless man. At the
end of the story he also shows that also slightly being unwise character. I believe that the Tortoise
is dishonest because he told the birds at the beginning of the story that he was a changed man
and he wouldn t ruin the feast. But when he arrived to the feast the Tortoise was offered to speak
in front of the birds because they thought he was a great orator. Tortoise told the birds that his
new name was All of You . So when the people of the sky said the meal was for All Of You, the

Silver In The 18th Century Dbq
Silver in the 16th century and early 18th century was a product that was widely used and traded
across the world both as a currency and a feature in households and stores. The trade of silver
included large scale social and economic effects that spread around the world, impacting large
centralized governments such as the chinese, to smaller, less organized areas in the americas. Silver
allowed the early modern age to flourish, and grow economically, socially, and in global trade.
Silver had a profound effect on the global economy, for example, silver backed nearly all of Chinas

of the usage of silver in this time period. However I believe that the point of view in this passage
is slightly swayed by the fact that the author is a county official who is most likely wealthy and
he may simply be referring to his own greed. In document 5 it shows how silver was eventually
used as a currency and people were no longer able to keep tabs as they had to pay with silver up

it was affecting the cities that began to use it. In document 7 silver can clearly be seen affecting
social lives through the increased demand for foreign products. With a higher demand for these
products there is a much higher demand for the silver to purchase the goods. I believe the purpose
of this document is important because it shows the relationship between the different countries in

So, the pyramids were ways to protect the pharaoh s body so that they could live on in the
afterlife(Barrow). The pyramids were built by cutting up large blocks into smaller more movable
blocks. Then they were pushed up ramps and put in there right spot on the pyramid. There was an
estimated 20,000 workers and took about 23 years just to build The Great Pyramid of
Giza(Ancient). The pyramids took so long to build that when a pharaoh came into power, he started
construction on his pyramid right away(Ancient). The pyramids are built mostly out of
limestone(Ancient), because they had so much of it in that time.
There are about 138 pyramids in Egypt(Ancient). Some are huge and some very small compared to
the Great Pyramid of Giza. It is 480 feet tall and was made out of about 2.3 million blocks of
limestone(Ancient). One thing that is very interesting is that the bases of the pyramids are perfect
squares and they didn t have any of the machines that we have today(Ancient). Something nobody
knows is that In 2006, Michel Barsoum undertook extensive chemical and x ray analysis of both the
external and internal sections of pyramid stones...Results that some portions of...pyramids are
actually made from concrete...(Logan). Inside the pyramids there is many things. The most
common things to find in a pyramid is the pharaoh and any treasures or possessions that his family

Baroque Music Vs Classical Music
There are many ways to distinguish compositions. They can be grouped in different time periods
and genres. For us to know what time period to associate them with, we must be able to recognize
the many characteristics of the different time periods. There are many time periods of music; two
of these musical periods were Baroqueand Classical. Each time period has its own differences. The
Baroque period began in the year 1650 and lasted 150 years. Baroque musichad much
ornamentation. One example of this is George Frederic Handel s oratorio Messiah, No. 18:
Rejoice Greatly . This oratorio has three parts Christmas, Easter, and Redemption. No. 18
Rejoice Greatly is part of the Christmas section. It has a form of da capo aria A B A . The second
A includes a great deal of embellishment. In No. 18 there is a soprano vocal solo and orchestra.
Although the Baroque time period embellishes musicand is very ornamental, the music of the
Classical time period is very simple and is of proportion and balance.... Show more content on

The term classic means timeless beauty or refers to something of highest quality. The music of
the Classical period certainly lived up to this definition. New forms were developed in this time
period. An example of this is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart s Eine kleine Nachtmusik (A Little
Night Music), K. 525 Movement I. This piece has a form of sonata allegro. It is a form that the
Classical time period established. This piece is fast because it is movement I. It is also in duple
meter. It uses a rocket theme and also contains a string orchestra. It has sudden dynamic changes
and a homophonic texture. Along with these little differences, the Baroque and Classical time
periods have some greater differences and

Jane Austen Gender Roles
In Jane Austen s novel, Sense and Sensibility, the emphasis on different dominant values rendered a
foundational perceiving for audiences as an insight of Georgian Era. Her constant establishment of
property and propriety throughout the writing embodies a specified description of daily life in the
nineteenth century. As well as writing about conventional marriages and male domination in the
society, the audio extract of XXXXX, incorporated with discussions that Austen mentioned
correspond in perceptions. Her personal preferences inside the novelendorsed opinions that are
against traditional values, which expressed a unique understanding in the context of Regency Era.
Austen s satire on the role of women leads to an introspection of this stereotypical, yet
subconscious behavior that displays a dishonest and duplicitous performance in the novel. Her
disapproval of these female character s immoral actions implied her admiration on propriety, but
also vaguely critiques this kind of idea that encourages incorrect morals. As well as Austen s
exposure on gender roles, XXXX s oral reinforces her concepts by stating ...... In Sense and
Sensibility, Mrs. John Dashwood is satirized as a greedy and apathetic villain, thus her scheming
actions characterized herself into an antagonist in the novel. At the moment when Mrs. John
Dashwood is planning the part of heritage belongs to Dashwood sisters, she unfolds her voracity by
constantly diminishing the amount without obeying the last word

Irish Hibernophobia
Though most Irish emigrants left their homes in search of a better lives free from persecution, those
who settled in the United States typically found equal levels of persecution yet, chose to remain
stateside because of the opportunities for work and the new found sense of community among Irish
immigrants in the United States. The first immigrant to enter the United States through Ellis Island,
Annie Moore, was a 15 year old from County Cork. Since the colonial times, Irish immigrants have
been ever present in the United States; however, also ever present is hibernophobia, or anti Irish
sentiment.
From the Norman Invasion in the late 12th century until the formation of the Irish Free State in
1922, Ireland was either under direct English rule or subject to direct British political
involvement. Under British rule, the Irish were stereotyped as stupid, half human savages and
later, as lazy, idle drunkards (Judd). Not so much changed in terms of hibernophobia for those
who left Ireland for the United States. In fact, several new stereotypes were born. The Irish were
again labeled lazy drunkards, an ironic stereotype because of the contradicting occupational
stereotypes of the Irish being policemen, lawyers, firefighters, and bartenders which are well
paying, steady jobs that could not be held by lazy drunkards. The Irish were also stereotyped as
violent because of the prevalence of usually criminal gangs such as the Dead Rabbits and The
Westies and events such as Bloody

The Importance Of My Day
I start my day by walking in door number 2, walking through the lengthy Jr. High hallway, and
entering the cafeteria. When I get into the cafeteria, I usually see my buddy, Sami. After a few
minutes, my other pals, Bridget and Libby come, closely followed by Addie. The bell rings at
precisely 8:05 and there is a mad rush as the Jr. High students rush to their lockers. Everybody
starts hurriedly putting their belongings in their lockers to make it to their 1st period classes on
time. My first period is Language Arts. When I get to Mrs. Harrison s class I set my possessions
down on my desk, which is the first one next to the side white board. I then go talk with my
friends for the next 3 5 minutes. By this time, my other friend, Sophie, is there as well. She
arrives at school later than the rest of us because her brother drives her and refuses to get to
school any earlier than necessary. Usually around 8:14 and 30 seconds, I rush to my seat to be
their on time. You can hear the chime of the intercom coming on, and we all stand to say the
Pledge of Allegiance. The announcements continue with; events for the day, what is for lunch,
birthdays, and a joke of the day. As the intercom clangs off, Mrs. Harrison comes to the front of
the room to begin class. Depending on what we are doing, we might check an assignment from a
prier day, read a story, take a quiz, or do a worksheet. Sometimes, when I am finished with my
work, I become bored because I have no more work to do. If we

Symptoms Of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome
There are many diseases all around the world that affect our loved ones. One in particular that is
common among many hospitals is Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, also known as ARDS.
Originally it was called Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome but realized that was not accurate
because it not only affects adults but children also. ARDS is defined as the acute onset of
respiratory failure, bilateral infiltrates on chest radiograph, hypoxemia as defined by a PaO2
/FiO2 ratio ≤200 mmHg, and no evidence of left atrial hypertension or a pulmonary capillary
pressure (Fanelli et al., 2013) It can also include cyanosis, tachypnea, dyspnea, reduced
respiratory compliance and an arterial blood gas showing respiratory alkalosis with evidence of
hypoxemia. Out of the many pulmonary disorders out there, ARDS is one of the most difficult
diseases to manage and has a high mortality rate that comes with it. For this condition to occur,
many things have to take place in the body. First the pulmonary capillaries and alveoli epithelial
tissues become inflamed. This results in absorbency of these layers of tissues which then leads to
plasma, which is abundant in protein, to escape out of the capillaries and into the alveolar space.
After the trauma to the alveolar lining occurs, this allows fluid into the alveoli, which then results
in pulmonary edema. During this whole process damage to two different types of cells is being
done. Type I and II of the alveolar epithelial cells. Type II

  • 3. Theme Of Disillusionment In The Great Gatsby Robert Frost once said, Nothing gold can stay . This idea was clearly elucidated in F. Scott Fitzgerald s, The Great Gatsby, a novel focused on Jay Gatsby, a famously wealthy young man and his never changing love for Daisy. Set in the 1920s, the thought of moving west continued to prosper as many Americans hoped to gain wealth and have an opportunity to set their own path to greatness. However, many struggled in achieving their American Dreams and constantly wish for a time when America could revert back to its truest beauty. Gatsby is portrayed as a character who is fixated on his seventeen year old dream to marry the prize of his life. On the other hand, Fitzgerald challenges this and instead proves his view of the reality of America through his style of writing. The reality that nothing in the past can stay but most Americans ignore it, foolishly still believing that what was once innocent and beautiful can exist forever. Therefore, Fitzgerald s theme that disillusionment had plagued Americans, blinding them from the reality and corruption, is often conveyed through the use of repetition, verbs, and imagery, to prove this point. One way that Fitzgerald proved his idea of disillusionment was by repeating one specific word in a sentence. He often uses it to represent a certain duration of time. For example, he repeats the word beyond twice in a sentence when describing Gatsby s expectations of Daisy, It had gone beyond her, beyond everything (95). This clearly ... • 7. Kant s Views On Freedom Essay In the following paper, I will outline how my understanding of freedom has changed since reading Immanuel Kant s An Answer to the Question: What is Enlightenment? Firstly, I will state the views that I held on freedom before I read the text, framing them within a political context by labelling myself as a civil libertarian and explaining what that means. Subsequently, I will provide my interpretation of Kant s views on freedom through the positive and negative senses and how, for Kant, that there ought to be a distinction between the public and private use of reason, as it constitutes a necessary limit on freedom in order to foster enlightenment. Then, I will outline how Kant s views on freedom have changed my understanding of freedom, stating that they have only strengthened it, though it has taken on a new degree of nuance as I agree that there ought to be such a distinction between the two uses of reason. I will also disagree with Kant by arguing that the citizenry must have the right to dissolve an authoritarian government, as it is necessary to preserve enlightenment. Finally, I will highlight a paradox that presents itself in Kant s writings, highlighting it through the contemporary example of Edward Snowden s disruptive usage of his public reason. Prior to reading the text, my views on freedom were framed around my experience with regards to paying attention to politics. I have always fancied fashioning my own viewpoints on a slew of topics, and freedom is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Religion Based Laws And Islamic Law Essay In much of Northern Africa (e.g. Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt and Libya), Islamic law exists as the foundation of these regional countries. Within many of these predominantly Islamic African nations, political law and Islamic law intertwine. With this being said, all homosexual conduct is criminalized in Northern countries such as Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt and Libya. Morality laws, which are religion based laws, tremendously limit the freedom of expression of LGBT individuals ( Sexual Orientation Laws In The World Overview ). People are detained for infraction of Islamic values. They are often harassed, arrested, and tortured (e.g. whipped, beaten, burned) whether for a confession or simply as punishment. There is no regulatory order of conduct for these police operations, as it is simply stated that they are to defend their countries cultural values (In a Time of Torture). With the unjust enforcement of brutal social control upon civilians, one can begin to understand the obstacles of participation in the African LGBT Rights Movement. Especially in countries where the law not only excludes the protection of LGBT individuals, but outrightly condemns it, little to no public participation in the movement is observed. As previously noted, 38 of 54 African countries criminalize homosexuality. While the penal code of African countries commonly entails imprisonment for a variable amount of years (up to life term), in some countries, the death penalty is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Americ Pain Vs Gain America: Pain vs Gain The late 19th century of America is best known for the increase of goods made by machine. Prior to this movement, industries were run primarily by highly skilled craftspeople. As 19th century America progressed, it became increasingly difficult to make a living as a craftsperson; it became easier to work in a factory under wage labor. This movement was viewed quite differently from many different people. There were a great deal of positive aspects, but a great deal of negative ones as well. Many historical figures documented their views of this movement in writing; among these are Andrew Carnegie with Andrew Carnegie Hails the Triumph of America in 1885, and Henry George with Henry George Dissects the Paradox of Capitalist Growth in 1879. Among the people who viewed the rise of industrial America as great was Andrew Carnegie. In Andrew Carnegie Hails the Triumph of America, Carnegie lists ethnicity, equality, education, and the superiority of the conditions under which [America] has developed (2) as the causes that led to the rapid growth of America. Throughout his essay, Carnegie continuously praises the conditions of industrial America and looks forward to the wonderful future it holds. At no point in his writing does Carnegie take into consideration the hardships that the rise of industrial America could cast upon people; he merely viewed the positive aspects. Trying to Settle The formal demand usually brings an opportunity to settle the case before filing suit. In many cases, these settlement negotiations are informal, involving discussions between the attorneys, insurance representatives, and clients. It may be a time when one party makes a settlement offer. Counteroffers and settlement rejections can also happen. More formal dispute resolution solutions are also available, including mediation. Winterson s, alternative to not writing her life story would be losing herself in the narrow mesh of her adoptive mother s story (698): Winterson experiences a power struggle between her adoptive mother s narrative and her needs to preserve her personal story. Winterson s mother story is one of severe unhappiness and resentment, or an unlived life as Winterson describes it (695). Through her adoption, Winterson was thrust into a dysfunctional familyand suffered extensive abuse at the hands of her angry mother. Winterson alludes the strength she has been forced to gain in order to survive. In a chaotic and abusive household, she was forced to become a bare knuckle fighter to endure the pandemonium (696). • 19. Legalizing Marijuana Essay What exactly is marijuana? Marijuana, also known as pot or hemp, is a naturally grown substance that contains THC. THC changes how the brain works and gives the user a high that relieves many different pains and even helps erase bad memories. The hemp plant can be found in just about any place, but has to be kept in heat. Marijuana is from a naturally grown plant so why not be able to use it legally? Well, there are many reasons against the legalization of marijuana and there are also many very good reasons to legalize it for medical and recreational use. So to the government and everyone against legalizing marijuana, too bad! It s natural and people are going to smoke no matter what the laws are, so why not just make it legal? Making the... (Young, Francis 1) Obviously if alcohol and cigarettes can be sold, marijuana can be too. A massive number of people who smoke marijuana would be willing to pay just to smoke, resulting in making profit. The number of people globally who had used cannabis in 2008 is estimated between 129 and 191 million, or 2.9 percent to 4.3 percent of the world s population ages fifteen to sixty four. (World Drug Report 9) Pot smokers are willing to pay to smoke while the drug is illegal, so they would pay to smoke if it was legal too. All of the people who would pay to smoke marijuana would result in a huge profit which would benefit our government and country. Now think about some other reasons that marijuana should be legal. One of the big reasons it should be legalized is for the people who use it medically. The people who are terminally ill or have a serious illness have so much trouble getting what they want and need just to feel good and live life the way they want without all their pain. If marijuana was legal, these people wouldn t have to go through tests and stages just to get a natural drug that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Psychology and the Legal System Paper 1With recent legislative issues making the news, one topic that has received a great deal of attention is that of indeterminate sentencing. This is the imposition of a sentence with no mandatory release date or set period of sentence to be served. Instead, one s sentence length is determined by the inmate s conduct while in prison. Upon successful completion of requirements the inmate may be returned to society, but it is possible that they will be kept behind bars for the remainder of his/her natural life. There are many issues that have come to light with indeterminate and determinate sentencing, such as how successful was the inmate? Is there really rehabilitation for sex offenders or drug ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The problem with indeterminate sentencing is that it often puts too much power into the hands of the parole board which then can lead to arbitrary and discriminatory results. It has been seen that minorities and prisoners without connections receive overly harsh decisions of the parole boards while less deserving offenders are being released early.(Portman, 2017) Even with some of the issues at hand indeterminate sentencing is making a comeback. This is now happening even more as our prisons are becoming overcrowded. In turn, allowing more room for judicial or parole board discretion. Prosecutors are exercising discretion when they decide which of many arrests to charge and for what particular crime. Juries exercise discretion in not convicting defendants who killed under circumstances that may have justified their actions. A jury may opt to exercise discretion when it deliberates the fate of the alleged perpetrator. Parole boards also have the opportunity to excise discretion when they decide whether to commute a death sentence to life imprisonment.(Greene, E., Heilbrun, K. 2014 pg. 10 11) This is being seen in many states where rehabilitation is available and viewed as a reasonable attainable outcome for offenders.Determinate sentencing began to spread widely during the 1970s and 1980s and is now the rule in many states. However, a close reading of the novel reveals that Natasha s beauty derives from her inner spirit and liveliness, aspects that disguise her impulsive behavior. Natasha can get away with her imprudence because her behavior is seen as product of her love for life and her free spirt, and her beauty and liveliness allow her to do things that were not socially accepted, such as kissing Boris or visiting Prince Andrew in bed in the middle of the night. Like Elizabeth from Austen s Pride and Prejudice, Natasha s looks are enhanced by other qualities such as her ability to sing and dance, her wit and her compassion, in the end showing that what is perceived as beauty in femalecharacters is a reflection of these characters behavior and interior qualities. In War and Peace, Tolstoy creates a female protagonist who, like Elizabeth Bennet from Austen s Pride and Prejudice, is not at first admired for her physical appearance, but rather for her beauty of spirit. When we first read about teenager Natasha, the narrator stresses that her attractiveness is not physical; it is Natasha s joie de vivre that makes her stand out: The little girl with her black eyes and wide mouth was not pretty but she was full of life. Assumptions is what we humans do on a daily basis, not following it up or trying to understand the circumstance behind it (Greene, 2007). Everyday assumptions are made mainly because we as individuals have been brought up to believe that situation or circumstance to be true. Most of the situations are what human beings have been brought up understanding it that way. Everyday assumptions are made from what human beings learn on a daily basis. They are based on who people interact with such as environment. As such, the difference in regard to social inquiry arises. Where everyday assumption depends on what human beings learn and their interaction to different phenomena, social inquiry tries to understand better through different methods of research. Imagery In The Perils Of Indifference By Elie Wiesel Holocaust survivor and writer, Elie Wiesel in his influential speech The Perils of Indifference, claims that indifference is the root of all evil and inhumanity all pain and all tragedy has resulted because of indifference. He supports his claim by highlighting the reason for World Wars, Civil Wars, Assassinations, Bloodbaths, and Tragedy indifference (Wiesel par. 5) . Specifically, Wiesel uses imagery to paint an image of what the innocent victims of indifference experience. The poor children [that] perish because of the indifference in a man s soul; until they see the children s pain and agony and hear their pleas, until one of them dies because of the violence, disease and famine, then one will notice the dangers of indifference (Wiesel par. 23) . Further, the author flashbacks to past events that have left humans without a soul. He mentions how one day he woke up in a place of eternal infamy, Buchenwald. Remembering the day he is captured and the day he is free[ed] (Wiesel par. 1) . The problem now is that there [i]s no joy in his heart; he becomes a victim of indifference the metal torture (Wiesel par. 1) . Wiesel s purpose is to inform humanity of the dangers indifference holds in order to encourage humans to continue to hope for a world without indifference no pain, no horror. He establishes a critical tone for readers by using stylistic devices such as imagery, flashbacks and rhetorical questions in order to achieve his purpose that indifference is monstrous and dangerous. From the dialogue, it can be argued that the philosopher is a mortal enemy of rhetoric. He condemns it on ethical and epistemic grounds. Tortoise was invited to the people of the sky s feast and ended up changing his name to All of you during his speech, so then when he asked who the meal was for the sky god said, For all of you. I believe that the Tortoise shows traits of being dishonest, he also shows that he is a heartless man. At the end of the story he also shows that also slightly being unwise character. I believe that the Tortoise is dishonest because he told the birds at the beginning of the story that he was a changed man and he wouldn t ruin the feast. But when he arrived to the feast the Tortoise was offered to speak in front of the birds because they thought he was a great orator. Tortoise told the birds that his new name was All of You . So when the people of the sky said the meal was for All Of You, the Tortoise would get all the food. This is why I believe the Tortoise is a dishonest person.... Silver In The 18th Century Dbq Silver in the 16th century and early 18th century was a product that was widely used and traded across the world both as a currency and a feature in households and stores. The trade of silver included large scale social and economic effects that spread around the world, impacting large centralized governments such as the chinese, to smaller, less organized areas in the americas. Silver allowed the early modern age to flourish, and grow economically, socially, and in global trade. Silver had a profound effect on the global economy, for example, silver backed nearly all of Chinas economy back in the day and silver quickly became the core of China s economic life. Jobs were focused towards silver production, foods and goods could be bought with silver coins, etc. This is mainly shown in documents 1,5, and 7. For example on document 1 it shows the social effects of the usage of silver in this time period. However I believe that the point of view in this passage is slightly swayed by the fact that the author is a county official who is most likely wealthy and he may simply be referring to his own greed. In document 5 it shows how silver was eventually used as a currency and people were no longer able to keep tabs as they had to pay with silver up front. I believe the purpose of this document is important due to the growing use of silver and how it was affecting the cities that began to use it. In document 7 silver can clearly be seen affecting social lives through the increased demand for foreign products. With a higher demand for these products there is a much higher demand for the silver to purchase the goods. Jane Austen Gender Roles In Jane Austen s novel, Sense and Sensibility, the emphasis on different dominant values rendered a foundational perceiving for audiences as an insight of Georgian Era. • 49. Irish Hibernophobia Though most Irish emigrants left their homes in search of a better lives free from persecution, those who settled in the United States typically found equal levels of persecution yet, chose to remain stateside because of the opportunities for work and the new found sense of community among Irish immigrants in the United States. The first immigrant to enter the United States through Ellis Island, Annie Moore, was a 15 year old from County Cork. Since the colonial times, Irish immigrants have been ever present in the United States; however, also ever present is hibernophobia, or anti Irish sentiment. From the Norman Invasion in the late 12th century until the formation of the Irish Free State in 1922, Ireland was either under direct English rule or subject to direct British political involvement. Under British rule, the Irish were stereotyped as stupid, half human savages and later, as lazy, idle drunkards (Judd). Not so much changed in terms of hibernophobia for those who left Ireland for the United States. In fact, several new stereotypes were born. The Irish were again labeled lazy drunkards, an ironic stereotype because of the contradicting occupational stereotypes of the Irish being policemen, lawyers, firefighters, and bartenders which are well paying, steady jobs that could not be held by lazy drunkards. The Irish were also stereotyped as violent because of the prevalence of usually criminal gangs such as the Dead Rabbits and The Westies and events such as Bloody ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When I get into the cafeteria, I usually see my buddy, Sami. After a few minutes, my other pals, Bridget and Libby come, closely followed by Addie. The bell rings at precisely 8:05 and there is a mad rush as the Jr. High students rush to their lockers. Everybody starts hurriedly putting their belongings in their lockers to make it to their 1st period classes on time. My first period is Language Arts. • 51. Symptoms Of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome There are many diseases all around the world that affect our loved ones. One in particular that is common among many hospitals is Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, also known as ARDS. Originally it was called Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome but realized that was not accurate because it not only affects adults but children also. ARDS is defined as the acute onset of respiratory failure, bilateral infiltrates on chest radiograph, hypoxemia as defined by a PaO2 /FiO2 ratio ≤200 mmHg, and no evidence of left atrial hypertension or a pulmonary capillary pressure (Fanelli et al., 2013) It can also include cyanosis, tachypnea, dyspnea, reduced respiratory compliance and an arterial blood gas showing respiratory alkalosis with evidence of hypoxemia. Out of the many pulmonary disorders out there, ARDS is one of the most difficult diseases to manage and has a high mortality rate that comes with it. For this condition to occur, many things have to take place in the body. First the pulmonary capillaries and alveoli epithelial tissues become inflamed. This results in absorbency of these layers of tissues which then leads to plasma, which is abundant in protein, to escape out of the capillaries and into the alveolar space. After the trauma to the alveolar lining occurs, this allows fluid into the alveoli, which then results in pulmonary edema. During this whole process damage to two different types of cells is being done. Type I and II of the alveolar epithelial cells. Type II ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
