The Poem Not Waving But Drowning By Stevie Smith
The poem Not Waving But Drowning by Stevie Smith is a three stanza twelve lines imagery poem
that uses extended metaphor to illustrate the story. By using different characters and figurative
language it helps the reader recreate, analyzes and better interpret the tragic events that is going. The
poem is about a man who is very distress but to the outside world has decided to portray a man who is
happy with life and have no worries in fear of judgment. His attempt to masked and self medicate his
illness just made things worst. He probably made people envious, intimidated and uncomfortable to
get to know him better on a deeper level in fear of his judgements. His relunctuancy to communicate
his sorrows and pain, eventually brings him to his death. Smith illustrates the deadly affect depression
can have on someone in her poem that presents conflicts between life and death concerning depression
and suicide. The poem structure form is free verse because it does not have a consistent rhythm
throughout the entire poem. The poem consist of three characters the protagoinist, the dead man and
society which all plays a virtal role in conveying the imagery of the tragic event. In stanza one and
two the dead man, society and protagoinist are introduced. The tragic event seems to take place out
where swimming is allowed and where the dead man drowned. As the tiltle leads us to believe but
further into the poem portrays a different scenario as this poem can be interpret in many

The Reid Technique, By John E. Reid
The Reid technique, developed by John E. Reid, has been a widely used technique in acquiring
confessions from suspected criminals. While many users of the Reid technique have praised it, calling
it the best interrogation procedure (Rodgers, 2015), the Reid technique has come under fire from
several critics, claiming that it risks obtaining inherently unreliable confessions (Gallini 2009). The
purpose of this essay will be to critically discuss the impact of the Reid technique, and its use by
police officers to obtain confessions. It is important to discuss the Reid technique as it has recently
received criticism for its use in obtaining false confessions from suspects, especially children or those
with a lower IQ. Firstly, this essay will focus on the positive impacts of the Reid technique, and how it
can be used as an effective method of interrogation in order to get a confession from a suspect.
Furthermore, this essay will then state the negative impacts of using the Reid technique, and how it
use has been involved in several false confessions. Finally, this essay will then state a possible
alternative to the Reid technique in the PEACE interrogation technique, which has been used with
great success in many countries. Overall, this essay will argue that while the Reid technique does have
positive impacts, there are more suitable alternatives to interrogating suspects. The Reid technique
seeks to evaluate a person s truthfulness independent from a polygraph

Akan Drum
The perspective of the American slave trade as taught in school, often finds its point of reference from
what has been written by the Anglo Saxons and other European countries. To come across what it is
the slaves saw and felt and the persecution that they experienced, the oral passing of the experiences
they had is mostly all that historians obtain in regards to the slave s experiences. Though, a single
object, an Akan drum, helps to tell their story not with words, but with the rhythm of their trials.
African participation in the slave trade, consisted of two groups of African people: those who were
sold as slaves, and those who captured slaves in order to trade with European countries for goods.
Slaves were not able to bring items with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The drum was something so much more than an instrument; it was their life line to their roots and the
only thing they had from their land. The drums also played a fundamental part of slave culture and
community once when they arrived to America. The use of drums was a source of entertainment but
also began to be used to announce rebellion against the plantation owners. The cultures of Europe and
Africa were merged together through the slave trade; often slave owners would have sexual relations
with slaves and have children that began the merging of these two cultures. Moreover, this drum had a
unique characteristic of being stretched over the drum in North American deer skin. The relationship
between Native Americans and African Americans is often not discussed, but is seen through this
drum due to the use of deer skin. Intermarriage between Natives and the slaves was quite common and
shows once again the mixing of cultures. A simple drum conceived in the wild of Africa, shares its
silent story of the hidden lives of the slaves of North America. It melody mixed three cultures that are
now one, and the beating of modern drums in jazz and blues gives reminder of a culture that once in
bondage but now enjoys the rhythm of

Zen Cultural Stereotypes
Most of the time when I am exploring a different environment, my coping skills used for this type of
endeavor require me to be patient, open minded, and self aware. As expressed earlier, I had to leave
my enclosed bubble and try something different from my normal routine, which in fact guided me to a
new path of consciousness.
My previous perceptions and stereotypes of the Zen culture was totally wrong. In my misguided
illusion, I had envisioned a rigid and closed pseudo philosophy, limited to just Asian culture and
martial arts; shrouded in mystery. I guess this was my first impression, especially since I grew up
watching a lot of martial arts movies during the early 80 s (Kung Fu theater, channel 5). In fact, the

Ambush By Tim O Brien Summary
War Changes People (A Discussion of 3 Messages from Ambush) Sometimes the smallest things can
be the biggest surprises. Tim O Brien is an award winning fiction writer. He wrote a short story,
Ambush, about a man, Tim, who has gone to war and ended up throwing a grenade and killing another
soldier. He felt very guilty and ever since has always remembered it. The soldiers also carry stories:
stories that connect the past to the future ... (Calloway). These stories are never forgotten and will
forever be known and thought about. Many events that happen in this story come out surprising to the
readers. In Ambush, by Tim O Brien, there are 3 important messages or big surprises. The biggest and
most obvious surprise in Tim O Brien s story, Ambush, is when Tim threw the back the grenade,
killing the other soldier. This was a big surprise because the man wasn t into killing people and never
really wanted to kill anybody. He was really shocked that he did that and felt guilty afterwards. In
Ambush, by Tim O Brien he says, There was no thoughts about killing (O Brien 812). It was never his
goal to kill the guy, but it was his duty and mission as a soldier. Later, his friend then told him that it
was a good kill and to think about if the roles were reversed. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

young, but able to make the connection that her dad fights in wars and must have at least killed
someone. He didn t know how to respond because he wanted to keep his daughter s mind pure and

Developments in the Constuction of Aircrafts
Early design aircrafts were manufactured from many materials with poor properties that would
develop problems in the aircraft s life and performance. In early aircrafts, such as the Wright Flyer,
were constructed from Stika spruce, which is a natural type of fibrous composite material. This
material gave the aircraft many issues, one of them being fungal rot which then imposing a change in
the design of aircraft material. This then brought the introduction of other alternate materials; such as
aluminium, which was a boost in aircraft performance and operational life. As the evolvement of the
aerospace industry reaches the 1970s, the use of composite materials has increased rapidly. By this
time, other materials were introduced to the development of an efficient aircraft such as steel and
titanium. Composite materials are defined as materials that are created from two or more components
with considerably different chemical or physical properties. They are designed in such a way, that
when combined together, can produce materials with characteristics completely different from the
component being as an individual. The new materials may be used and desired due to its positive
reasons such as: Stronger material Lighter weight And also less in costs when compared to the
previous traditional material As mentioned above, composite materials are now being used in a wide
range in the Aircraft Industry. They have now allowed the engineers to design and overcome difficult

The Structures And Functions Of Different Lipocalins
This paper mainly deals with a small family of proteins Lipocalins . The structures and functions of
different lipocalins have been widely discussed. The structural similarity, physiological functions,
synthesis, their number of amino acid residues, secondary structures of each lipocalin has been widely
analyzed throughout this paper.
Lipocalins are a family of proteins which contribute various physiological role in small molecules.
Lipocalins are found to take part in binding, storage or sequestration of many low molecular weight
compounds which shows poor solubility and easy decomposition, thereby stabilizing them and playing
an important role. In humans lipocalins are present as secretory proteins in blood, genital secretions
and tears.
About Lipocalins: Lipocalins are small monomeric proteins with 150 180 residues, having compact
fold with central eight ÎČ strands. There are four loops which connect the ÎČ strands and forms a cup
shaped cavity. Different lipocalins can accommodate different chemical ligands (lipids, steroids,
vitamins, cofactors etc.) of various shapes and sizes, depending on the length of the amino acid
sequence of the loops. The name Lipocalins were given to a group of proteins comprising of the
human α1 acid glycoprotein, α1 microglobulin, serum/plasma retinol binding protein, and bovine ÎČ
lactoglobulin on the basis of sequence homologies, disulfide bonds, functional similarities and their
ability to bind with +complex lipophilic substances in

Causes Of Imperialism In The 19th Century
Imperialism There is an impressive change by the 19th century by the domination of one country over
another group of people, Imperialism.
Imperialism is most of the times also refers as Colonialism, however it have different meanings, first,
Imperialism is the control of the political and economic, formally or informally and Colonialism its
means the control of one nation over another one. Moreover, on one hand, Colonialism its the conquer
of a country and the exploration of resources of its country, and on the other hand Imperialism is the
creation of one empire and the expansion. While Colonialism means to describe the settlement of
places such as India, Australia, Algeria, Brazil... controlled by the Europeans, Imperialism means
when a foreign government governs a territory with no settlement, for example, in the dominations of
the 19th century. The Age of New Imperialism started in the 1870 s to 1914, however before this there
was a called Old Imperialism, from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century, by this years European
countries were trying to explore the New World. They have gained territories in the coast of China and

The Electrolaryngograph ( Egg ) Is A Non Invasive Device...
The electrolaryngograph (EGG) is a non invasive device used to measure phonatory behaviour,
specifically vocal fold contact during speech (Abberton, Howard, Fourcin, 1989; Baken Orlikoff,
2000; Mooshammer, 2010). The operation of the device involves the placement of two electrodes
superficially to the thyroid cartilage at an approximate level to the position of the vocal folds on either
side of the subject s larynx (Baken Orlikoff, 2000; Winstanley Wright, 1991). Time varying
impedance between the vocal folds is monitored by the voltage exchange from one electrode to the
other, which occurs relative to the vocal fold vibrations, and is displayed as an output waveform (Lx =
Larynx excitation) as a function of time (Abberton et al., 1989; Baken Orlikoff, 2000; Mooshammer,
2010; Winstanley Wright, 1991). Maximal impedance occurs when the vocal folds are abducted, and
minimal impedance occurs when the vocal folds are adducted (Baken Orlikoff, 2000; Mooshammer,
2010).
As many as six different voice qualities have been reported in the literature, however, in this analysis,
only modal, creaky, and breathy voice will be discussed (Abberton et al., 1989; Baken Orlikoff, 2000;
Laver, 1980; Mooshammer; 2010). Modal voice is characterised as the quality that includes the range
of fundamental frequencies normally used for speaking and singing; its laryngeal characteristic is a
neutral mode of phonation, with moderate adductive tension (Laver, 1980). The Lx waveform of

The defendants Glen Sebastian Burns and Atif Ahmad Rafay were accused to have committed
aggravated first degree murder in Washington State. In a confession to an undercover RCMP officer in
British Columbia, posing as a mob boss, it is clamed that Burns was a contract killer hired by Rafay to
kill his parents so that Rafay could get insurance money for their deaths. It is claimed that Burns beat
the victims with a baseball bat while Rafay watched (para.10). They threw their cloths away and took
a bath to wash away the blood. The accused claim that the alleged confession was a lie to gain the
confidence of who they thought was a Mob Boss (para.11). They were to be extradited to the United

nullified on a 2 1 decision by the British Columbia Court of Appeal.
The Minister of Justice appealed the British Columbia Court of Appeal s decision to nullify the
extradition without assurances to the Supreme Court of Canada.
The Supreme Court of Canada s Decision
The Supreme Court of Canada (SCC) said in regards to the section 12 of the charter claim, that in R. v.
Schmidt, Judge La Forest J. concluded that the charter cannot be used to govern how criminal
proceedings in a foreign country are to be conducted (para.51) and therefore the respondents section
12 charter claim was rejected.. However, the SCC decided that s.7 of the charter was relevant to the
case, and made their decision based on the interpretation of s. 7. The SCC found that s.7 evidently was
the real issue they had to deal with (para.31). The minister in this case, depended on the courts
agreeing that the precedent in Kindler and Ng applied to this case. In Kindler and Ng the courts
allowed for the accused to be extradited without assurances by the Minister of Justice. In Kindler, the
courts decided that each extradition case, where convictions could result in the death penalty, each
hearing should be reviewed on a case by case basis known as the balancing process (para.65). The
respondents claim that unlike Kindler and Ng, which were decided nearly 10 years

International Economics And The Field Of International...
I would like to mention some courses that I have taken at Knox College that not only have encouraged
me to take up the particular field of study as a major, but have also fortified me to volunteer and intern
in the field of international development. These courses are: International Economics (Manisha

Economics (Steve Cohn, Professor) and Environmental Ethics (Bill Young, Professor). These
particular courses had a great impact on my decision to pursue a major in Economics and a double

In International Economics, I had written a research paper on low income nations and their
dependence on primary commodities for exports and its vulnerability to price shocks. I had carried out
my research only keeping applied economics in perspective, therefore, I could not really understand as
to why these low income countries, although having a wide variety of natural resources readily
available for production and consumption, still struggling to alleviate themselves from poverty and
poor health. The reality and the real life scenario of such situations was explained to me in the

The Benefits of Seal Oil

would actually spend the money to try one of these supplements. In some cultures, these supplements
are ingested as part of a daily, natural diet, leading researchers to find why these cultures have lower
instances of certain diseases. For example, villages in Northern Alaska have an incredibly low
instances of heart diseases, despite having predominantly fatty diets. Researchers have found this to be
due to a diet rich in fish and seal [8]. Because I am interested in village medicine in Alaska as a career,

They all enter the cell via the membrane and increase the fluidity of the plasma membrane, increasing
overall cell health, and they all form unsaturated fats [3]. Unsaturated fats are made up of many

Summary Of Fantasyland, How America Went Haywire
Author Kurt Anderson mostly blames a certain group of people in his book Fantasyland, How
America went Haywire. In a nutshell, Protestants are the problem. Anderson spends chapter after
chapter, starting with Martin Luther and continuing through American history of how Protestant
beliefs have been detrimental to America. In his view which comes across as snide and derisive, they
are the bane of American existence because they believe in magic and supernatural things and have
left most of reason behind. Anderson practically sneers (many words are in italics for emphasis) when
he writes of Protestants. Certainly, some Protestants may be gun nuts, and preppers but not all. Most
of my Protestant friends don t own a gun and they send their children to public school. (Anderson is
not a fan of homeschooling or private religious education).
I found Anderson to be one of those people who believes his way is the only way to live. He
chronicles that taking illegal drugs taught him character. This is a rather strange way to build
character, hard work and helping others is what I was taught by my baby boomer Protestant parents.
He lives in Brooklyn, I believe, and feels that the American s dream of a pastoral setting (the suburbs )
has ruined the entire country. This is a great big land and not everyone wants to or needs to live on top
of each other in a city. Yes, Americans have many cars, but my husband and I take public
transportation to the city from our suburban home. The author

Tales In The Canterbury Tales
All three articles have several things in common but also have several thing which distincts them from
the others. Lawrence, Pratt, and Meyer Lee all share a different idea of how the tales in the canterbury
tales were written. They all have different arguments on how the ordering and the editing of the tales
were. Some of them Along with that they also argue about the manuscripts and the order that the
manuscripts can be in due not knowing dates on when it was written. Furthermore, they also introduce
the idea of having discussions of the tales because they don t just want their audience to read the tales,
but they also want hear assumptions and open more discussion. In the Sequence of the Tales by
Lawrence, he discusses his view based off what Furnival s beliefs are. Lawrence is actually one of the
only editors that agrees with Furnival s order but doesn t agree with his reasoning in choosing that
order. Lawrence uses the letter grouping such as, A, B, B1, B2, to group the tales and he believes this
is the best way to order them (Lawrence, 93). He believes this is the best way because some stories
could have been moved around to keep a sequence going on in the story. He also doesn t agree with
Furnival s method about relating the tales to Chaucer s trip to Canterbury. Although the tales were not
finished, Chaucer was able to have parts that showed fluidity (Lawrence, 99). There is a three in a half
day method in which Lawrence believed all stories fit into, but

Whaling In Japan
Part III: What I Learned Whaling has become a popular topic with in the last few decades. It has been
going on for centuries and was finally band in 1931 (Matera 3). But this didn t stop the Japanese at all.
By researching my topic I found that I did not know a lot about whaling, which made me want to dig
even deeper. At the beginning of this process, I looked into Whaling. I already knew that there was a
war going on between Japan and the United States because of the show Whale Wars, but I didn t know
any background information. I was always curious before but now I actually had a reason to do
research. In Part I of this project it asked me to describe everything I knew, assumed, and imagined
about whaling. During Part one I knew that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I went to the Scottsdale Community College library website and searched whaling. All the sources I
chosen was through Academic Search Premier. Every thing that I read put me in a new perspective
about my topic. I learned that whaling has been going on since the eleventh century, and commercial
whaling became illegal in 1931 (Matera 3). I found out that the United States actually whaled at some
point but it was not for the meat, it was for the whale oil. During the eighteenth and nineteenth
centuries, whaling started to become a problem. During this time Japan started to be the main whaling
country, this is when everything flipped upside down ( Greenpeace Says Japan Ready for Whaling. ).
In another source I was reading, I found out that in the 1980s, eight countries joined the International
Whaling Commission (IWC) to stop the world from whaling (Hyder 10). I also looked more into the
Sea Shepherds. The Sea Shepherds are a full volunteer based program to go out into the artic and try
and save as many whales as they can. Every year they go out and face Japan s whaling fleet, which are
five boats against the SS three. I learned that Japan got very hostile in the last couple tours (Kita 3).

Romanticism And The Romantic Era
Romanticism was a literary movement that swept through virtually every country of Europe, the
United States, and Latin America that lasted from about 1750 to 1870. This period included
philosophy, art, music, literature. Romantics believed that men and women should not be guided by
rules placed on them by society but led by warm emotions that promoted a sense of freedom. William
Blake was one of the poets that began the Romantic Age who promoted self expression but was
weighed down by the importance and standards of religion. (Forward, 2014) Literary work during
Romanticism had a strong emphasis in implementing nature, emotion over logic, imagination over
reason, and no division between art and literature. These works placed focus on human personality
affected by political and social causes. These became dominant themes in romantic poetry which
made literature much more complex. (Wartz The Romantic Era 1999)
During the same time, the Victorian Era was present in Britain which was stricken with poverty.
Unlike the romanticism era, Victorians did not have much belief and faith in nature because they knew
it would not help diminish poverty and other worldly issues. Though romanticism is very emotional,
Victorian pieces are more complicated and sort of withdrawn. Victorian pieces also focus more on
turning political issues into art and capturing individual experiences. These two eras set the foundation
for artistic styles, literary schools, as well as, social, political and religious movements that flourished.
It was a time of prosperity, broad imperial expansion, and great political reform. Contrasting to that
was the horrible reality of child labor which persisted throughout the period. When a bill was passed
stipulating that children under nine could not work in the textile industry, this in no way applied to
other industries.
In the late eighteenth and nineteenth century, child labor in England was prominent after the Great
Fire of London in 1666. ( Children As Chimney Sweeps In England A Terrible Chapter In History )

Human Connection In Night By Elie Wiesel
The Importance of Human Connection Human connection impacts lives around the world every day.
The need for human connection is essential to our survival, especially in times of hardship. Keeping
people sentient even in the worst situations, human connection gives people a reason not to give up. In
Night, One Survivor Remembers, and experiences today, human connection contributes greatly to
health and survival by motivating us to withstand suffering. In the novel, Night, Elie Wiesel and his
father are motivated to survive for each other through their human connection during the Holocaust.
Elie s father demonstrates how much he values his connection with Elie when he lets Franek punish
him meaninglessly so that Elie can keep his gold crown. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Larimore M. D. once had to find the source of a lady s death out in the country. He had to investigate
the lady, who was pale and calmly sat in a rocking chair in the heart of her old home. Larimore
concludes that without connections with other people, bad health and even death can ensue. He writes
about how the time you spend in interaction with others can dramatically affect your physical health .
Those who have no connections with others are at greater risk for life threatening illnesses and even
death. Enhancing relationships and reducing loneliness will lead to better health and therefore a better
life. Liberators International s experiment also encourages human connection to reduce stress from the

Theories Of Group Dynamics
CHAPTER 3:
THEORETICAL BACKGROUND POF THE STUDY:
1. THE FUNDAMENTALS OF GROUP DYNAMICS:
Group dynamics refers to the interactions between people who are talking together in a group setting.
Group dynamics can be studied in different settings, in classroom settings, and in social settings.
Any time there are three or more individuals interacting or talking together, there are group dynamics.
Another definition of group dynamics is the extent to which the team members in the group are
actively participating in decision making, sharing their ideas about the tasks, motivating co
employees.
Team and group dynamics are important is given to these dynamics plays a key role in overall success
of an organization.

The complexity of large groupings is partially because they are made up of interrelated subgroups. As
the size of a group increases, the need for more organization or leadership also often becomes more
obvious.
German sociologist GEORG SIMMEL argued that as the group becomes greater, the individual
becomes separated and grows more alone, isolated and segmented.
Simmel s view was somewhat ambiguous with respect to group size. On one hand, he believed that the
bigger the group the better for the individual. In a larger group it would be harder to exert control on
an individual, but there is a possibility of the individual becoming distant impersonal.
Group dynamics can be referred to group development and movement in time towards its goals
substantiated by the interaction and communication of group members and the external influences. It
considers the set of social and psychological processes and phenomena that take place during the
whole life cycle of the group.
Group dynamics covers all stages of group development starting from its creation, functioning,
development, stagnancy, regress and break up. Based on the mentioned definitions, in the given work

Thirsting for Power
Monica Rivera
Power is defined the ability to do something or act in a particular way, especially as a faculty or
quality. Each and every person possesses some type of power over another thing. Some people are
content with not having any power whatsoever and then there are people whose entire lives revolve
around that thirst and need for power. The latter is a description of two famous people in history,
Malcolm X and Julius Caesar. Thirsting for power and wanting to much of a good thing can be very
self destructive. This thirst for power can cause people to be blinded but the reality of what is going on

However, much of the conquest was an act of aggression prompted by personal ambition (not unlike
the conquests of Alexander the Great). Fighting in the summers, he would return to Cisalpine Gaul
(northern Italy) in the winters and manipulate Roman politics through his supporters, (Kebric).
After this and many more complex events and elections Caesar would continue to plunder neighboring
territories and occupy them. This is how the rise of the Roman Empire, the strongest and longest
lasting empire began. Caesar would publicly deny his want to be idolized as a King but acted in ways
that suggested he wanted to be idolized more of a God than a Monarch. It was this attitude and his
thirst for more power, more territory that would lead his enemies to assassinate him in 44 BC.
Caesar attended the last meeting of the Senate before his departure, held at its temporary quarters in
the portico of the theater built by Pompey the Great (the Curia, located in the Forum and the regular
meeting house of the Senate, had been badly burned and was being rebuilt). The sixty conspirators, led

The World s Total Fertility Rate
What to Expect When No One is Expecting Reflective Analysis As our global population count
continues to exponentially climb, many people are under the impression the world is overpopulated. A
lot of society wonders how we will be able to sustain such a large population. An overpopulated planet
could cause or enhance problems such as natural resource depletion, global climate change, and
starvation. The majority of people believe overpopulation is our world s most crucial problem,
including me. Or at least I did before I read What to Expect When No One is Expecting. This book
definitely made me think twice. What to Expect When No One is Expecting, by Jonathan Last, argues
how overpopulation will not be a challenge for future generations. In fact, the book shares how
married couples are not having enough babies. Statistically, in the last forty years, the world s total
fertility rate (TFR) has decreased from 6.0 to 2.52. Meaning, the average woman is having 4.48 less
children in her lifetime. At first glance, this statistic seems like a good thing, but in reality it is
expected to have a devastating effect. What to Expect When No One is Expecting convinced me the
world doesn t have an overpopulation problem by explaining how economics is a major cause of the
lowered fertility rates, and consequently, because there are less babies, the economy will take the
biggest hit. Today, in America, the TFR stands at 1.93 and continues to fall. However, the average

Julius Caesar And The Civil War Essay
The Civil War, consisting in large part of Caesar s own account of the conflict between himself and
Pompey, explores the origins of the war, the manner in which it was carried out, and most importantly
the role of pivotal figures on both sides of the struggle. Prior to his records ending and
supplementation by military officers, Caesar makes a case for his involvement in and perhaps
triggering of the war, one which would transform the social and political landscape of the Roman
empire as battles and campaigns were waged from Spain to Italy, Africa to Asia Minor. Caesar walks a
fine line between historian, strategist and orator as he attempts to record historical events, martial
decisions, and persuade an audience respectively. Despite his efforts to remain impartial, as evidenced
by his admission that the Pompeians were winning at Dyrrachium, Caesar consistently presents
himself as a charismatic and skilled general and leader, jeopardizing the integrity of the text as
objective material and allowing it to be a propagandist account of sorts. Ultimately, Caesar uses
anecdotal evidence, the presentation of his personal thoughts, and juxtaposition with his opposition to
paint his side of the war in a positive and just light. When reading The Civil War, it is critical to
understand what Julius Caesar was attempting to accomplish by recording a narrative of his war, on
and off the battlefield, with Pompey and his forces. Every author creates their work with bias, be it

in widespread forest fires and haze. In Indonesia rainfall decreases up to 60% compared to normal

Simakobu s are medium sized colobines with a 6.6 month estimated gestation time. The typical living
groups are one male, three females, two juveniles and one to two infants. Data was collected from
2006 to 2008, 373 census days with 11 births and 1787 feeding points. Infant groups were measured
for size, motor skills and colour against a three point scale.
Siberut ecology displays no distinct annual variation, the climate is warm and wet with an absence of
dry season. Fruit is available nine months out of the whole year. Simokubu feeding is characterized by
strong annual variation with fruit intake peaking in June and September. Simokobu reproduction
exhibits moderate annual variation and a moderate peak in October. The conceptions coincided with
peaks in unripe fruit as there is high costs in lactation due to costs of the physical environment. The
seasonal effects are because of the environmental seasonality due to the preference of fruit. Giving
birth occurs approximately six months after fruit availability peaks. This happens due to conceiving
occurring at good condition which supports the idea of Simakobu s being capital breeders.

Nitrogen as a Fertilizer, Nutrient, or Pollutant Essay
Nitrogen as a Fertilizer, Nutrient, or Pollutant
Nitrogen can always be a fertilizer, nutrient, or pollutant depending on the circumstances and the
environment it is in. As a fertilizer, nitrogen can be extremely useful in aiding the growth of many
plants. As a nutrient, nitrogen is essential to many plants growth and survival. As a pollutant, nitrogen
can not only affect the plant at the given time but be very detrimental many years down the road. No
matter where you go nitrogen will always be either a fertilizer, nutrient, or pollutant.
Nitrogen can be considered as both a fertilizer and nutrient under the right constraints. I will use citrus

Research has shown that nitrogen deficiencies this severe in oranges will result in considerable yield
losses.
As you can see from this quote nitrogen is not only a needed nutrient but also a valuable fertilizer.
Citrus plants constantly need nitrogen to promote optimal growth and yield. Nitrogen is often readily
available in well or ground water. Nitrogen can also be accessible through organic matter. You have to
be careful though because some organic matter can actually be low in nitrogen. Nitrogen stored in the
soil or present in organic amendments can substitute for chemical sources. However, some organic
amendments can be sufficiently low in nitrogen (as those derived from yard waste), that their
microbial degradation can actually induce a temporary nitrogen deficiency in a grove that would
otherwise have sufficient nitrogen. There are also several ways nitrogen can be applied that many
people may not think of. When most farmers or people think of fertilizing they think of a tractor
pulling a sprayer with wet fertilizer, or a truck spreading dry fertilizer. But with citrus plants you can t
really pull a sprayer or drive a truck through your crop. You have to use more non conventional
methods of application. The two most commonly used forms of application are by plane and through
there irrigation systems. They apply nitrogen year round because it is such a useful fertilizer and
nutrient and takes such a large amount to keep the

Could anybody ask for a better name then Sleepy Hollow for this town. All the people of the town are
sleepy and inactive. There is also a hollow along the Hudson River which is right up close to the town.
In this short story of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Irving captures the setting well through

first couple paragraphs it shows how much Irving wants us to get the creepy and scared feeling. Not
far from this village, perhaps about two miles, there is a little valley or rather lap of land among high
hills, which is one of the quietest places in the world (1). This is saying that even around the village it

Renewable Energy Is An Energy
INTRODUCTION:
Renewable energy is an energy that is generated from natural resources such as sunlight, rain, wind,
tides and geothermal heat that are renewable (not be depleted when used). In the year 2008, at about
19% of the total global energy consumed came from the renewable energy sources and with 13%
coming from traditional biomass and 3.2% from the hydroelectricity. New renewable energy sources
such as small hydro, modern biomass, solar, geothermal, wind and some bio fuels have accounted for
another 3% and these are growing rapidly. The renewable share in electricity generation is 18% and
the 18% comprises of 15% of hydroelectricity and the rest 3% from new renewable energy sources.
In the renewable energy sources, Wind power is growing at a rate of 30% annually, the capacity of
wind power installed worldwide is 158 GW in 2009 which is widely used in Europe, Asia and the
United States. By the end of 2009, PV (Photovoltaic) installations surpassed 21 GW and photovoltaic
power stations are most popular in Germany and Spain and solar thermal power stations are operated
in US and Spain, the largest of these have the capacity of 354 MW. Largest geothermal power station
installed in the world is The Geysers in California with a rated capacity of 750 MW. Brazil has one of
the largest renewable energy programs in the world that involves production of ethanol fuel from

His techniques revolved around passive and calm responses instead of wild and violent responses to

He chose to set a feel for his scenes unknown , then have the actors improvise what was going to
happen (Behr). Coppola also had these actors make lists of what they felt that their characters should
do in different situations (Behr). This caused an effect of the script writing itself, as well as creating a
deeper rift between it and the source material. Marlon Brando, who portrayed Kurtz, fed the fire of
deep confusion where the script was concerned. Both Heart of Darkness, and Milius original script, as
well as Coppola s later interpretation of these, called for the character of Kurtz to be a frail, sickly, and
dying man. Brando, however, refused to get into shape as Coppola had requested. Brando was in fact
so fat during filming that he was shy about it (Behr). Coppola first suggested that he rewrite the script
to accommodate the character to Brando by setting him up as a gluttonous, man consumed by his own
evil excesses (Behr). Brando refused to be undignified in his portrayal, so the filming, as well as the
writing remained stagnant for days on end. In the end Coppola merely set Brando and Sheen free to
improvise for three weeks, leaving him with an incoherent batch of footage that, with the exception of
the death lines of The Horror! The Horror! (Conrad) had little to do with the script, or the novel. Time

A Brief Note On Science And The Nineteenth Century
Faith v.s Science
Sunya Hassan
History 10
Faith vs. Science in the Nineteenth Century
Throughout history, the comparison of faith and science have caused debate between our historians.
However, they can agree that the nineteenth century was somewhat of a blurred line in American
history to determine where the population s allegiance laid. While the Second Great Awakening riled
up a lot of devout Baptists and Methodists, science had also taken a toll with the Industrial Revolution.
Which is still one of the most significant economic changes in American history to date. And although
Darwin s finds did not occur in the US, the effects of his theory of evolution made men and women in
the states question their beliefs and faith in religion. Technological developments also created issues
for the church as they were losing grip of power on their believers. Even though religion played a
large role in the early nineteenth century, given the facts, science and innovation captured the interest
of America s people and undermined their faith. Although faith was not the leading candidate for
winning over the allegiance, faith in religion runs deep down to the foundations of America. The early
settlers, such as the pilgrims, ran from Europe to practice their own faith without the accusation of
heresy. Puritanism was a religious reform movement that sought to purify the Church of England.

Analysis Of The Movie Casablanca
Intro
Casablanca, first released on January 23rd, 1943 is undoubtedly one of the masterpieces of Classical
Hollywood film. Written and released in the midst of World War Two it explores themes such as love,
desire and especially sacrifice. Although the love story of the protagonists is the cause and catalyst for
most of the narrative, one would not necessarily associate it with the conventional Classical
Hollywood love story. Rather as a fabula based on the principle of the importance of sacrifice in order
to overcome a common enemy, in this case the Nazis. Casablanca does indeed contain many of the
common characteristics identified with the Classical Hollywood film. An example being the the way
director, Michael Curtiz used a mainly chronologically ordered narrative structure and the utilisation
of a Cause and Effect chain. In this essay I will looking at the various ways I believe this film does fall
into the criteria of a Classical Hollywood narrative and also how some could perceive that it does not.
From the opening sequence one can establish that Casablanca obeys the elementary principles used in
the Classical Hollywood narrative structure. In the initial minutes of the film the audience is
introduced via a voice over of the various political happenings prior to the films start such as Hitler s
occupation of Europe and the surge of refugees who fled the Nazi s to Casablanca. The use of
narration presents the audience with a simple introduction which the rest of

For example, there is less mass in the Universe than predicted. While some have confidently expected
that the missing mass would be located, it has yet to be found. Could the next few years throw up a
completely new theory of how the Universe started? Robotics and artificial intelligence, commonly
known as AI, are two related fields of research which promise much. One of the best known schemes
is the Cog Project a humanoid robot that can act, talk and even look like a person. Hans Moravec, an
AI pioneer, believes that by 2030 robots will be able to visualise tasks and assess the consequences of
their actions. By 2040 robots should be able to reason at least as efficiently as people. Moravec even
envisages a world where robots will display superhuman reasoning . By 2050, emotions will be
commonplace because they will help machines to bond with their human masters. All this, however,
raises an intriguing question: will robots be so similar to us that they, too, will start wondering where
they came from? As well as showing awareness of the world, will they be aware of themselves? In
other words, will they be self conscious? By the middle of the next century, we may even begin to
wonder whether such advanced robots, with their enormous mental capacities and physical strength,
pose a threat to their human inventors. The cyborg the fusion of man and machine is another plausible
prospect in our lifetime. Doctors have already devised silicon chips

It s A Wonderful Life Analysis
An Unexpected Christmas Surprise Frank Capra s 1946 movie, It s a Wonderful Life, has turned into
one of the most beloved holiday films and has become ingrained into American culture, which is quite
remarkable since it was originally not intended to be considered a Christmas movie. It s a Wonderful
Life keeps coming back each and every year on DVD, commercials, and on television. It is even
routinely broadcasted twice on NBC, and almost everyone can recite little Zuzu Bailey s famous
words from the very end of the movie, every time a bell rings an angel gets his wings. It s a Wonderful
Life follows the life of George Bailey, played by the well beloved and Oscar winning actor, James
Jimmy Stewart, and much of the films success is due to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Director Frank Capra as I said, did not depict the movie to be a holiday film, and according to Stephen
Cox, In fact, he saw it as a cinematic remedy to combat what he feared was a growing trend toward
atheism and to provide hope to the human spirit . It s a Wonderful Life was Capra s first post war film.
Capra, an Italian born director, spent his time during WWII creating propaganda films for the U.S.
military. In Barry Grant s essay, It s a Wonderful Life showed director s loss of innocence , Grant
shares that Capra Made from 1943 1945, Why We Fight [which] was a series of seven documentaries
that aimed to coax the country out of its pre war isolationism and to motivate soldiers for impending
combat . Prior to the war, Capra made a series of comedies that showed his faith in people , including
the films, Meet John Doe, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, and Mr. Deeds Goes to Town. Yet Capra s
movie, It s a Wonderful Life, shows the innocence that he lost from the war and the dark impact it had
upon him, which would explain why Capra thought his film was a film to combat atheism and to
provide hope to people in dark times. It s a Wonderful Life was Capra s first movie where he depicted
a character (George Bailey) that had lost all

As for metal, it has many uses. In fact, modern civilization has thrived off of things where iron is used
like: buildings, car frames, bridges, and much more.
Is this element rare? Where can it be found?
Iron is the fourth common element. It can be found in Earth s crust and core. There is an abundant
amount of iron that can be found in the stars.
How easy is it to extract and use this element?
It is a long process to extract Iron to get it from an ore to its final product. In the beginning stages, an
iron ore is heated along with limestone and pure carbon in a furnace that reaches temperatures ranging
up to 1,500°C (2,700°F); this process helps remove oxygen from iron ore. The limestone is used to
erase imperfectirons.
Is your element found in the human body? If so, what function does it perform?
Iron is a mineral found in the human body. It is a part of the protein hemoglobin of a cell, which
transports oxygen from our lungs throughout our bodies.
With what elements does it react? Are these chemical compounds beneficial or harmful?
When Iron reacts with oxygen, it starts to rust.
Why did you choose your element s sidekick or nemesis? What makes your superhero element want to
combine with or repulse this other element?
I chose carbon as her sidekick because when combined, it creates carbon steel, making Iron stronger
by not being susceptible to rusting. Iron s parents died shortly right

Archaeologists found more than 23 shipwrecks which doubled the number of shipwrecks discovered
around Greece. Many people wondered why there were so many shipwrecks around one area. There
are thirteen islands between Ikaria and Samos and it is believed that the area is a major Mediterranean
shipping route. Many of the wrecks had clay vessels which were used to transport and trade goods
between civilizations. The forty five known wrecks span from around 525 BC to 1850 AD. Inside
many of the cargo holds, there were clay vessels that transported goods to areas of Italy, North Africa,
Egypt, and other areas. The team plan on continuing the exploration until 2018. A couple of the rare
wrecks dated to be around 525 480 BC were around the Archaic Greek Period. There also was black
glazed pottery found in some wrecks that belong to the Hellenistic Greeks. This tpe of pottery was
used and produced in the Classical and Hellenistic periods. Eventually this black glazed ware would

Introduction to Statistics and Research Arkansas State University
Abstract
It is of utmost importance to the Harmony Creek Middle School that they conduct research into how
their students are learning in different classrooms. They believe that their teachers may need to
develop the same methodology in their classroom instruction in order to achieve the highest math
scores possible. I will investigate Harmony Creek Middle School test scores based on a number of
factors: classroom methods of teaching, gender, race, socioeconomic status and teacher student race. I
will use the ANOVA as well as the t test to investigate this. I will begin with my introduction in which
I will give more information about the teachers. Next, a review of literature on the aspects and
research that has been obtained on each method of instruction used at Harmony Creek Middle School
will be discussed and reported on. Finally, I will take a look at the results, and I will give my
recommendations to the school.
Is there a correlation between test scores and methods of teaching for students based on gender, race,
or economics?

Zachary Taylor Inaugural Address
Zachary Taylor became the 12th president of the United States in 1849. He served in office for until
1850, 16 months after becoming president, since he died in office from a gastrointestinal condition
(Editors). Taylor was a great nominee for president because he appealed to the North and the South.
The North respected his long military history, while in the South, he was popular for owning slaves.
The reason for the Inaugural Address is for the new president to establish what he believes in and the
tasks he will complete for the country. The dialect of President Taylor s Inaugural Address is simple,
since he was not the best student. Instead of going into law and furthering his education, he chose to
go into the military.

In the Inaugural Address, Mr. Taylor wanted to secure encouragement and protection to the great
interests of agriculture, commerce, and manufactures, this would reduce the public debt. Commerce
would help improve the rivers and harbors as well.
Zachary Taylor refers to President George Washington multiple times. He alludes to Washington s
farewell address when he states how Washington wanted us to abstain from entangling alliances with
foreign nations. Washington was also mentioned as the Father of his Country. He sees Washington as a
patriot and a role model. Taylor would see Washington as a role model since he is known as a national
war hero for his battles in the Mexican War (Editors).
President Taylor only alludes to God once at the end of his speech. This is different from the founding
presidents because their speeches mentioned God numerous times. Zachary Taylor s short presidency
foreshadowed the Civil War. In February of 1850, Southern leaders threatened secession and Taylor s
response was that it was an act of rebellion against the Union, he would hang ... with less reluctance
than he had hanged deserters and spies in Mexico

“What Role Do Minor Parties Perform in the Australian...
The role of the minor parties within the Australian political system can be as their title suggests, quite
minor. On the other hand, a minor party can influence the political proceedings of this country in more
ways than one. Minor parties can highlight socio economic problems that quite often fly under the
radar of the larger political parties, or simply can broaden electoral debate. Often spawning from a
social, or in the case of the Greens, an environmental movement, minor parties tend to only last
through one election, due to a lack of support and relevance in the mainstream social fabric. The
minor parties can become crucial players come election time, due to Australia s law of Compulsory
preferential voting. Jaensch (1983, p.21) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, if the Federal Liberal party needed preferences in marginal seats in Tasmania, a deal
could be negotiated with the Greens, which could see protection of the old growth forest areas of the
state. In reality this can backfire, as it did for the Labor party during the 2004 Federal election. Latham
and the Labor party stated they would protect the Old grow forest areas from logging practices, in an
attempt to win votes. This lead to a revolt by the unions, and those involved in the logging industry,
claiming that Labor had abandoned them.
The second rule that Sartori created was, A party qualifies for relevance whenever its existence, or
appearance, affects the tactics of party competition and particularly when it alters the direction of the
competition by determining a switch from centripetal to centrifugal competition either leftward,
rightward, or in both directions of the governing oriented parties (1983, p.19). This rule further
highlights the importance of minor party preferences, and the role they have in the Australian system.
As an extension of Sartori s two criteria for minor party relevance, a third rule is often highlighted due
to Australia s application of preferential voting on the electoral system. This third rule as quoted by
Jaensch (1983, p.21) states that A minor party can be discounted as irrelevant whenever its preferences

Essay on Make-up of Life-giving Cells
What is a cell? A cell is the structural, functional and biological unit of all organisms (biology
online.org). The millions of cells that compose the body give life. These cells work together in
synergy to perform the bodily functions God has given man to maintain homeostasis. The cells that
work in harmony consist of an array of cells such as, epidermal, nerve, or muscle. As these various
cells work together they form a biological machine to give life. Before the discovery the cell, many
had their theory of what composed life. Greek philosophers believed that everything consisted of
water, earth, fire, and air called the classical elements (about.com). Charles Darwin erroneously
theorized that they regarded as simple bags of an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The nucleolus is where the ribosomes or protein factories are manufactured. From its production it is
exported through the nuclear pores and into the cytoplasm to begin its protein manufacturing. The
second major part of the eukaryotic cell is the cytoplasm. This serves as the cell s fluid medium or
matrix. This jellylike fluid allows the organelles or little organs to float within it. Cytoplasm also
contains many dissolved chemicals. The cytoplasm and organelles use the properties within it to create
chemical reactions to produce energy as well as recycling. To give added structure to the cell, the
cytoplasm contains a cytoskeleton to prevent being squashed. The cytoskeleton is composed of large,
hollow rods called microtubules. This gives rigidity like a buildings steel beams. These beams also
hold the organelles in place. The hollow rods act as highways for transporting goods around the cell.
The proteins from the ribosomes or protein factories can be packaged into a special container where
they are shipped by the microtubules. At the center of the microtubules is the centrosome. This
structure is where the microtubules branch off, which is near the middle of the cell. The centrosome is
called the organizing center because it can break down the microtubules and allow the organelles to
move around. At the center of the centrosome is where the commands are made called the centrioles, a
pair of cylindrical structures. A major part of the

Merciless Death in The Jilting of Granny Weatherall
In The Jilting of Granny Weatherall, Katherine Anne Porter gives readers a glimpse of the thoughts of
a woman about to die. Lying in her bed in her daughter Cornelia s house, eighty year old Granny
Weatherall drifts in and out of consciousness. Through her thoughts of events both current and
bygone, it is learned that Granny has worked hard all her life, and frequently tells herself that she did a
good job. She thinks of events that made her stronger: digging holes for fence posts, riding country
roads in the winter when women had their babies (311), taking care of sick animals and sick children.
Though Granny Weatherall tries to assure herself that her life has been ... Show more content on

She tells herself that she must go through that box, because the thought of her children finding out
how silly she had been once (310) disturbs her. She never specified what was to be done with the
amethyst set or her land. She had six bottles of wine that she intended to give to Sister Borgia for her
dyspepsia (314). Granny begins to panic when she becomes aware that although she had spent so
much time preparing for death (310), it took her by surprise.
By the time her final hours arrive, Granny Weatherall has grown tired of people treating her like a
child. Cornelia constantly whispers to people about her as if she cannot hear. Cornelia warns people
that Granny is getting childish and they d have to humor her (310), and she often reminds anyone
within hearing distance of Granny s age. Doctor Harry is also prone to speaking to Granny in a tone
that she interprets as condescending, prompting her to reprimand him to show some respect for his
elders. The type of behavior displayed by Cornelia and Doctor Harry leaves Granny terribly annoyed.
Between all the other odds and ends that come to her mind, Granny most often thinks of those she
loved who were no longer with her. She thinks of John, the father of her children, who would be a
child beside her if she saw him now (311), indicating that he had died at a rather young age. She
remembers Hapsy, her daughter, who appears to her during her last

The Rights Of Human Rights And Animal Rights
Animals are not suppose to be used as food, clothing, entertainment, experimentation or any other
purpose and that animals deserve consideration and what is in their best interests. Animal right is a
movement that tends to protect animals from being used and abuse by humans. This includes the use
of animals for anything that causes them pain and suffering, such as medical experiments,
imprisonment in circuses and zoos, and fur production. Animal rights support the idea that all animals
are to be treated humanely and away from pain, suffering or murder. They shouldn t be used as food,
fur or entertainment. Animal rights seek to promote treatment of living beings through legislation,
protest campaigns, research public events and other techniques such as celebrity spokesman ship.
Animals are also the creatures living on earth with us. If people say animals should be killed and
served us as food, then why don t we eat human? Human have the same nutrition that could be served,
there s no point to say that killing human is criminal but killing animal is legal. Animals have the right
to live in condition that in benefit and satisfy their nature needs, which include freedom, enough space
and environment. But people draw negative attention to animal related issue; they give out the wholly
false information. For example on one website there was a picture of some sheep gathered into a
holding yard and the caption said that, this is now sheep live all the time. They totally fail to mention
the green field in the picture, with no doubt, it is where the sheep will not be returned once they have
been sheared, or even killed. In today s society, people create some organization for fighting their
government toward freedom and rights. They are fortunate because they have ability to speak for
themselves. How about animals? People are always taking advantages from animals by killing and
entertaining, and sadly they don t have a voice to fight against it. Some of you might say, if animals
cannot be killed for food, everyone will need to become vegetarian, and getting the right amount of
protein per day will be more difficult. And from the traditional Christian view, they also think that god
has created animals for the use of

  • 2. The Poem Not Waving But Drowning By Stevie Smith The poem Not Waving But Drowning by Stevie Smith is a three stanza twelve lines imagery poem that uses extended metaphor to illustrate the story. By using different characters and figurative language it helps the reader recreate, analyzes and better interpret the tragic events that is going. The poem is about a man who is very distress but to the outside world has decided to portray a man who is happy with life and have no worries in fear of judgment. His attempt to masked and self medicate his illness just made things worst. He probably made people envious, intimidated and uncomfortable to get to know him better on a deeper level in fear of his judgements. His relunctuancy to communicate his sorrows and pain, eventually brings him to his death. Smith illustrates the deadly affect depression can have on someone in her poem that presents conflicts between life and death concerning depression and suicide. The poem structure form is free verse because it does not have a consistent rhythm throughout the entire poem. The poem consist of three characters the protagoinist, the dead man and society which all plays a virtal role in conveying the imagery of the tragic event. In stanza one and two the dead man, society and protagoinist are introduced. The tragic event seems to take place out where swimming is allowed and where the dead man drowned. • 3. The Reid Technique, By John E. Reid The Reid technique, developed by John E. Reid, has been a widely used technique in acquiring confessions from suspected criminals. While many users of the Reid technique have praised it, calling it the best interrogation procedure (Rodgers, 2015), the Reid technique has come under fire from several critics, claiming that it risks obtaining inherently unreliable confessions (Gallini 2009). The purpose of this essay will be to critically discuss the impact of the Reid technique, and its use by police officers to obtain confessions. It is important to discuss the Reid technique as it has recently received criticism for its use in obtaining false confessions from suspects, especially children or those with a lower IQ. Firstly, this essay will focus on the positive impacts of the Reid technique, and how it can be used as an effective method of interrogation in order to get a confession from a suspect. Furthermore, this essay will then state the negative impacts of using the Reid technique, and how it use has been involved in several false confessions. Finally, this essay will then state a possible alternative to the Reid technique in the PEACE interrogation technique, which has been used with great success in many countries. Overall, this essay will argue that while the Reid technique does have positive impacts, there are more suitable alternatives to interrogating suspects. The Reid technique seeks to evaluate a person s truthfulness independent from a polygraph ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

To come across what it is the slaves saw and felt and the persecution that they experienced, the oral passing of the experiences they had is mostly all that historians obtain in regards to the slave s experiences. Though, a single object, an Akan drum, helps to tell their story not with words, but with the rhythm of their trials. African participation in the slave trade, consisted of two groups of African people: those who were sold as slaves, and those who captured slaves in order to trade with European countries for goods. The drum was something so much more than an instrument; it was their life line to their roots and the only thing they had from their land. The drums also played a fundamental part of slave culture and community once when they arrived to America. The use of drums was a source of entertainment but also began to be used to announce rebellion against the plantation owners. The cultures of Europe and Africa were merged together through the slave trade; often slave owners would have sexual relations with slaves and have children that began the merging of these two cultures. Moreover, this drum had a unique characteristic of being stretched over the drum in North American deer skin. The relationship between Native Americans and African Americans is often not discussed, but is seen through this drum due to the use of deer skin. Intermarriage between Natives and the slaves was quite common and shows once again the mixing of cultures. A simple drum conceived in the wild of Africa, shares its silent story of the hidden lives of the slaves of North America. It melody mixed three cultures that are now one, and the beating of modern drums in jazz and blues gives reminder of a culture that once in bondage but now enjoys the rhythm of ... As expressed earlier, I had to leave my enclosed bubble and try something different from my normal routine, which in fact guided me to a new path of consciousness. My previous perceptions and stereotypes of the Zen culture was totally wrong. In my misguided illusion, I had envisioned a rigid and closed pseudo philosophy, limited to just Asian culture and martial arts; shrouded in mystery. I guess this was my first impression, especially since I grew up watching a lot of martial arts movies during the early 80 s (Kung Fu theater, channel 5). In fact, the only thing similar to ... Tim O Brien is an award winning fiction writer. He wrote a short story, Ambush, about a man, Tim, who has gone to war and ended up throwing a grenade and killing another soldier. He felt very guilty and ever since has always remembered it. The soldiers also carry stories: stories that connect the past to the future ... (Calloway). These stories are never forgotten and will forever be known and thought about. Many events that happen in this story come out surprising to the readers. In Ambush, by Tim O Brien, there are 3 important messages or big surprises. The biggest and most obvious surprise in Tim O Brien s story, Ambush, is when Tim threw the back the grenade, killing the other soldier. This was a big surprise because the man wasn t into killing people and never really wanted to kill anybody. He was really shocked that he did that and felt guilty afterwards. In Ambush, by Tim O Brien he says, There was no thoughts about killing (O Brien 812). It was never his goal to kill the guy, but it was his duty and mission as a soldier. • 7. Developments in the Constuction of Aircrafts Early design aircrafts were manufactured from many materials with poor properties that would develop problems in the aircraft s life and performance. In early aircrafts, such as the Wright Flyer, were constructed from Stika spruce, which is a natural type of fibrous composite material. This material gave the aircraft many issues, one of them being fungal rot which then imposing a change in the design of aircraft material. This then brought the introduction of other alternate materials; such as aluminium, which was a boost in aircraft performance and operational life. As the evolvement of the aerospace industry reaches the 1970s, the use of composite materials has increased rapidly. By this time, other materials were introduced to the development of an efficient aircraft such as steel and titanium. Composite materials are defined as materials that are created from two or more components with considerably different chemical or physical properties. They are designed in such a way, that when combined together, can produce materials with characteristics completely different from the component being as an individual. The new materials may be used and desired due to its positive reasons such as: Stronger material Lighter weight And also less in costs when compared to the previous traditional material As mentioned above, composite materials are now being used in a wide range in the Aircraft Industry. • 8. The Structures And Functions Of Different Lipocalins This paper mainly deals with a small family of proteins Lipocalins . The structures and functions of different lipocalins have been widely discussed. The structural similarity, physiological functions, synthesis, their number of amino acid residues, secondary structures of each lipocalin has been widely analyzed throughout this paper. Lipocalins are a family of proteins which contribute various physiological role in small molecules. Lipocalins are found to take part in binding, storage or sequestration of many low molecular weight compounds which shows poor solubility and easy decomposition, thereby stabilizing them and playing an important role. In humans lipocalins are present as secretory proteins in blood, genital secretions and tears. About Lipocalins: Lipocalins are small monomeric proteins with 150 180 residues, having compact fold with central eight ÎČ strands. There are four loops which connect the ÎČ strands and forms a cup shaped cavity. Different lipocalins can accommodate different chemical ligands (lipids, steroids, vitamins, cofactors etc.) of various shapes and sizes, depending on the length of the amino acid sequence of the loops. The name Lipocalins were given to a group of proteins comprising of the human α1 acid glycoprotein, α1 microglobulin, serum/plasma retinol binding protein, and bovine ÎČ lactoglobulin on the basis of sequence homologies, disulfide bonds, functional similarities and their ability to bind with +complex lipophilic substances in ... • 10. The Electrolaryngograph ( Egg ) Is A Non Invasive Device... The electrolaryngograph (EGG) is a non invasive device used to measure phonatory behaviour, specifically vocal fold contact during speech (Abberton, Howard, Fourcin, 1989; Baken Orlikoff, 2000; Mooshammer, 2010). The operation of the device involves the placement of two electrodes superficially to the thyroid cartilage at an approximate level to the position of the vocal folds on either side of the subject s larynx (Baken Orlikoff, 2000; Winstanley Wright, 1991). Time varying impedance between the vocal folds is monitored by the voltage exchange from one electrode to the other, which occurs relative to the vocal fold vibrations, and is displayed as an output waveform (Lx = Larynx excitation) as a function of time (Abberton et al., 1989; Baken Orlikoff, 2000; Mooshammer, 2010; Winstanley Wright, 1991). Maximal impedance occurs when the vocal folds are abducted, and minimal impedance occurs when the vocal folds are adducted (Baken Orlikoff, 2000; Mooshammer, 2010). As many as six different voice qualities have been reported in the literature, however, in this analysis, only modal, creaky, and breathy voice will be discussed (Abberton et al., 1989; Baken Orlikoff, 2000; Laver, 1980; Mooshammer; 2010). Modal voice is characterised as the quality that includes the range of fundamental frequencies normally used for speaking and singing; its laryngeal characteristic is a neutral mode of phonation, with moderate adductive tension (Laver, 1980). In a nutshell, Protestants are the problem. Anderson spends chapter after chapter, starting with Martin Luther and continuing through American history of how Protestant beliefs have been detrimental to America. In his view which comes across as snide and derisive, they are the bane of American existence because they believe in magic and supernatural things and have left most of reason behind. Anderson practically sneers (many words are in italics for emphasis) when he writes of Protestants. Certainly, some Protestants may be gun nuts, and preppers but not all. Most of my Protestant friends don t own a gun and they send their children to public school. (Anderson is not a fan of homeschooling or private religious education). I found Anderson to be one of those people who believes his way is the only way to live. He chronicles that taking illegal drugs taught him character. This is a rather strange way to build character, hard work and helping others is what I was taught by my baby boomer Protestant parents. Lawrence, Pratt, and Meyer Lee all share a different idea of how the tales in the canterbury tales were written. They all have different arguments on how the ordering and the editing of the tales were. Some of them Along with that they also argue about the manuscripts and the order that the manuscripts can be in due not knowing dates on when it was written. Furthermore, they also introduce the idea of having discussions of the tales because they don t just want their audience to read the tales, but they also want hear assumptions and open more discussion. In the Sequence of the Tales by Lawrence, he discusses his view based off what Furnival s beliefs are. Lawrence is actually one of the only editors that agrees with Furnival s order but doesn t agree with his reasoning in choosing that order. Lawrence uses the letter grouping such as, A, B, B1, B2, to group the tales and he believes this is the best way to order them (Lawrence, 93). He believes this is the best way because some stories could have been moved around to keep a sequence going on in the story. He also doesn t agree with Furnival s method about relating the tales to Chaucer s trip to Canterbury. Although the tales were not finished, Chaucer was able to have parts that showed fluidity (Lawrence, 99). Every year they go out and face Japan s whaling fleet, which are five boats against the SS three. I learned that Japan got very hostile in the last couple tours (Kita 3). They were ramming into the SS boats, even the little speedboat, which was an eighth of the size of their ship. • 22. Romanticism And The Romantic Era Romanticism was a literary movement that swept through virtually every country of Europe, the United States, and Latin America that lasted from about 1750 to 1870. This period included philosophy, art, music, literature. Romantics believed that men and women should not be guided by rules placed on them by society but led by warm emotions that promoted a sense of freedom. William Blake was one of the poets that began the Romantic Age who promoted self expression but was weighed down by the importance and standards of religion. (Forward, 2014) Literary work during Romanticism had a strong emphasis in implementing nature, emotion over logic, imagination over reason, and no division between art and literature. These works placed focus on human personality affected by political and social causes. These became dominant themes in romantic poetry which made literature much more complex. (Wartz The Romantic Era 1999) During the same time, the Victorian Era was present in Britain which was stricken with poverty. Unlike the romanticism era, Victorians did not have much belief and faith in nature because they knew it would not help diminish poverty and other worldly issues. Though romanticism is very emotional, Victorian pieces are more complicated and sort of withdrawn. Victorian pieces also focus more on turning political issues into art and capturing individual experiences. These two eras set the foundation for artistic styles, literary schools, as well as, social, political and religious movements that flourished. It was a time of prosperity, broad imperial expansion, and great political reform. Contrasting to that was the horrible reality of child labor which persisted throughout the period. When a bill was passed stipulating that children under nine could not work in the textile industry, this in no way applied to other industries. In the late eighteenth and nineteenth century, child labor in England was prominent after the Great Fire of London in 1666. ( Children As Chimney Sweeps In England A Terrible Chapter In History ) After this massive fire in London, chimneys had to be built slimmer due to new regulations to keep the city safer. The complexity of large groupings is partially because they are made up of interrelated subgroups. As the size of a group increases, the need for more organization or leadership also often becomes more obvious. German sociologist GEORG SIMMEL argued that as the group becomes greater, the individual becomes separated and grows more alone, isolated and segmented. Simmel s view was somewhat ambiguous with respect to group size. On one hand, he believed that the bigger the group the better for the individual. In a larger group it would be harder to exert control on an individual, but there is a possibility of the individual becoming distant impersonal. Group dynamics can be referred to group development and movement in time towards its goals substantiated by the interaction and communication of group members and the external influences. It considers the set of social and psychological processes and phenomena that take place during the whole life cycle of the group. Group dynamics covers all stages of group development starting from its creation, functioning, development, stagnancy, regress and break up. Each and every person possesses some type of power over another thing. Some people are content with not having any power whatsoever and then there are people whose entire lives revolve around that thirst and need for power. The latter is a description of two famous people in history, Malcolm X and Julius Caesar. Thirsting for power and wanting to much of a good thing can be very self destructive. Fighting in the summers, he would return to Cisalpine Gaul (northern Italy) in the winters and manipulate Roman politics through his supporters, (Kebric). After this and many more complex events and elections Caesar would continue to plunder neighboring territories and occupy them. This is how the rise of the Roman Empire, the strongest and longest lasting empire began. Caesar would publicly deny his want to be idolized as a King but acted in ways that suggested he wanted to be idolized more of a God than a Monarch. It was this attitude and his thirst for more power, more territory that would lead his enemies to assassinate him in 44 BC. Caesar attended the last meeting of the Senate before his departure, held at its temporary quarters in the portico of the theater built by Pompey the Great (the Curia, located in the Forum and the regular meeting house of the Senate, had been badly burned and was being rebuilt). • 26. The World s Total Fertility Rate What to Expect When No One is Expecting Reflective Analysis As our global population count continues to exponentially climb, many people are under the impression the world is overpopulated. A lot of society wonders how we will be able to sustain such a large population. An overpopulated planet could cause or enhance problems such as natural resource depletion, global climate change, and starvation. The majority of people believe overpopulation is our world s most crucial problem, including me. Or at least I did before I read What to Expect When No One is Expecting. This book definitely made me think twice. What to Expect When No One is Expecting, by Jonathan Last, argues how overpopulation will not be a challenge for future generations. In fact, the book shares how married couples are not having enough babies. Statistically, in the last forty years, the world s total fertility rate (TFR) has decreased from 6.0 to 2.52. Meaning, the average woman is having 4.48 less children in her lifetime. At first glance, this statistic seems like a good thing, but in reality it is expected to have a devastating effect. What to Expect When No One is Expecting convinced me the world doesn t have an overpopulation problem by explaining how economics is a major cause of the lowered fertility rates, and consequently, because there are less babies, the economy will take the biggest hit. Today, in America, the TFR stands at 1.93 and continues to fall. However, the average American couple ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 27. Julius Caesar And The Civil War Essay The Civil War, consisting in large part of Caesar s own account of the conflict between himself and Pompey, explores the origins of the war, the manner in which it was carried out, and most importantly the role of pivotal figures on both sides of the struggle. Prior to his records ending and supplementation by military officers, Caesar makes a case for his involvement in and perhaps triggering of the war, one which would transform the social and political landscape of the Roman empire as battles and campaigns were waged from Spain to Italy, Africa to Asia Minor. Caesar walks a fine line between historian, strategist and orator as he attempts to record historical events, martial decisions, and persuade an audience respectively. Despite his efforts to remain impartial, as evidenced by his admission that the Pompeians were winning at Dyrrachium, Caesar consistently presents himself as a charismatic and skilled general and leader, jeopardizing the integrity of the text as objective material and allowing it to be a propagandist account of sorts. Ultimately, Caesar uses anecdotal evidence, the presentation of his personal thoughts, and juxtaposition with his opposition to paint his side of the war in a positive and just light. When reading The Civil War, it is critical to understand what Julius Caesar was attempting to accomplish by recording a narrative of his war, on and off the battlefield, with Pompey and his forces. Infant groups were measured for size, motor skills and colour against a three point scale. Siberut ecology displays no distinct annual variation, the climate is warm and wet with an absence of dry season. Fruit is available nine months out of the whole year. Simokubu feeding is characterized by strong annual variation with fruit intake peaking in June and September. Simokobu reproduction exhibits moderate annual variation and a moderate peak in October. The conceptions coincided with peaks in unripe fruit as there is high costs in lactation due to costs of the physical environment. The seasonal effects are because of the environmental seasonality due to the preference of fruit. Giving birth occurs approximately six months after fruit availability peaks. You have to be careful though because some organic matter can actually be low in nitrogen. Nitrogen stored in the soil or present in organic amendments can substitute for chemical sources. However, some organic amendments can be sufficiently low in nitrogen (as those derived from yard waste), that their microbial degradation can actually induce a temporary nitrogen deficiency in a grove that would otherwise have sufficient nitrogen. There are also several ways nitrogen can be applied that many people may not think of. When most farmers or people think of fertilizing they think of a tractor pulling a sprayer with wet fertilizer, or a truck spreading dry fertilizer. But with citrus plants you can t really pull a sprayer or drive a truck through your crop. You have to use more non conventional methods of application. Coppola also had these actors make lists of what they felt that their characters should do in different situations (Behr). Marlon Brando, who portrayed Kurtz, fed the fire of deep confusion where the script was concerned. Both Heart of Darkness, and Milius original script, as well as Coppola s later interpretation of these, called for the character of Kurtz to be a frail, sickly, and dying man. Brando, however, refused to get into shape as Coppola had requested. Brando was in fact so fat during filming that he was shy about it (Behr). Coppola first suggested that he rewrite the script to accommodate the character to Brando by setting him up as a gluttonous, man consumed by his own evil excesses (Behr). Brando refused to be undignified in his portrayal, so the filming, as well as the writing remained stagnant for days on end. A Brief Note On Science And The Nineteenth Century Faith v.s Science Sunya Hassan History 10 Faith vs. Science in the Nineteenth Century Throughout history, the comparison of faith and science have caused debate between our historians. However, they can agree that the nineteenth century was somewhat of a blurred line in American history to determine where the population s allegiance laid. While the Second Great Awakening riled up a lot of devout Baptists and Methodists, science had also taken a toll with the Industrial Revolution. Which is still one of the most significant economic changes in American history to date. And although Darwin s finds did not occur in the US, the effects of his theory of evolution made men and women in the states question their beliefs and faith in religion. Technological developments also created issues for the church as they were losing grip of power on their believers. Even though religion played a large role in the early nineteenth century, given the facts, science and innovation captured the interest of America s people and undermined their faith. Although faith was not the leading candidate for winning over the allegiance, faith in religion runs deep down to the foundations of America. The early settlers, such as the pilgrims, ran from Europe to practice their own faith without the accusation of heresy. Casablanca does indeed contain many of the common characteristics identified with the Classical Hollywood film. An example being the the way director, Michael Curtiz used a mainly chronologically ordered narrative structure and the utilisation of a Cause and Effect chain. In this essay I will looking at the various ways I believe this film does fall into the criteria of a Classical Hollywood narrative and also how some could perceive that it does not. From the opening sequence one can establish that Casablanca obeys the elementary principles used in the Classical Hollywood narrative structure. In the initial minutes of the film the audience is introduced via a voice over of the various political happenings prior to the films start such as Hitler s occupation of Europe and the surge of refugees who fled the Nazi s to Casablanca. The use of narration presents the audience with a simple introduction which the rest of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

For example, there is less mass in the Universe than predicted. While some have confidently expected that the missing mass would be located, it has yet to be found. Could the next few years throw up a completely new theory of how the Universe started? Robotics and artificial intelligence, commonly known as AI, are two related fields of research which promise much. One of the best known schemes is the Cog Project a humanoid robot that can act, talk and even look like a person. Hans Moravec, an AI pioneer, believes that by 2030 robots will be able to visualise tasks and assess the consequences of their actions. By 2040 robots should be able to reason at least as efficiently as people. Moravec even envisages a world where robots will display superhuman reasoning . By 2050, emotions will be commonplace because they will help machines to bond with their human masters. All this, however, raises an intriguing question: will robots be so similar to us that they, too, will start wondering where they came from? As well as showing awareness of the world, will they be aware of themselves? In other words, will they be self conscious? By the middle of the next century, we may even begin to wonder whether such advanced robots, with their enormous mental capacities and physical strength, pose a threat to their human inventors. The Study of Methods of Instruction and Their Influence on Diverse Students Test Scores Is there a correlation between test scores and methods of teaching for students based on gender, race, or economics? By Monica Ross July 29, 2016 Introduction to Statistics and Research Arkansas State University Abstract It is of utmost importance to the Harmony Creek Middle School that they conduct research into how their students are learning in different classrooms. They believe that their teachers may need to develop the same methodology in their classroom instruction in order to achieve the highest math scores possible. I will investigate Harmony Creek Middle School test scores based on a number of factors: classroom methods of teaching, gender, race, socioeconomic status and teacher student race. I will use the ANOVA as well as the t test to investigate this. I will begin with my introduction in which I will give more information about the teachers. Next, a review of literature on the aspects and research that has been obtained on each method of instruction used at Harmony Creek Middle School will be discussed and reported on. Finally, I will take a look at the results, and I will give my recommendations to the school. Taylor was a great nominee for president because he appealed to the North and the South. The North respected his long military history, while in the South, he was popular for owning slaves. The reason for the Inaugural Address is for the new president to establish what he believes in and the tasks he will complete for the country. • 48. “What Role Do Minor Parties Perform in the Australian... The role of the minor parties within the Australian political system can be as their title suggests, quite minor. On the other hand, a minor party can influence the political proceedings of this country in more ways than one. Minor parties can highlight socio economic problems that quite often fly under the radar of the larger political parties, or simply can broaden electoral debate. Often spawning from a social, or in the case of the Greens, an environmental movement, minor parties tend to only last through one election, due to a lack of support and relevance in the mainstream social fabric. The minor parties can become crucial players come election time, due to Australia s law of Compulsory preferential voting. Jaensch (1983, p.21) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, if the Federal Liberal party needed preferences in marginal seats in Tasmania, a deal could be negotiated with the Greens, which could see protection of the old growth forest areas of the state. In reality this can backfire, as it did for the Labor party during the 2004 Federal election. Latham and the Labor party stated they would protect the Old grow forest areas from logging practices, in an attempt to win votes. This lead to a revolt by the unions, and those involved in the logging industry, claiming that Labor had abandoned them. The second rule that Sartori created was, A party qualifies for relevance whenever its existence, or appearance, affects the tactics of party competition and particularly when it alters the direction of the competition by determining a switch from centripetal to centrifugal competition either leftward, rightward, or in both directions of the governing oriented parties (1983, p.19). This rule further highlights the importance of minor party preferences, and the role they have in the Australian system. As an extension of Sartori s two criteria for minor party relevance, a third rule is often highlighted due to Australia s application of preferential voting on the electoral system. This third rule as quoted by Jaensch (1983, p.21) states that A minor party can be discounted as irrelevant whenever its preferences ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 49. Essay on Make-up of Life-giving Cells What is a cell? A cell is the structural, functional and biological unit of all organisms (biology online.org). The millions of cells that compose the body give life. These cells work together in synergy to perform the bodily functions God has given man to maintain homeostasis. The cells that work in harmony consist of an array of cells such as, epidermal, nerve, or muscle. As these various cells work together they form a biological machine to give life. Before the discovery the cell, many had their theory of what composed life. From its production it is exported through the nuclear pores and into the cytoplasm to begin its protein manufacturing. The second major part of the eukaryotic cell is the cytoplasm. This serves as the cell s fluid medium or matrix. This jellylike fluid allows the organelles or little organs to float within it. Cytoplasm also contains many dissolved chemicals. The cytoplasm and organelles use the properties within it to create chemical reactions to produce energy as well as recycling. To give added structure to the cell, the cytoplasm contains a cytoskeleton to prevent being squashed. The cytoskeleton is composed of large, hollow rods called microtubules. This gives rigidity like a buildings steel beams. These beams also hold the organelles in place. The hollow rods act as highways for transporting goods around the cell. The proteins from the ribosomes or protein factories can be packaged into a special container where they are shipped by the microtubules. At the center of the microtubules is the centrosome. This structure is where the microtubules branch off, which is near the middle of the cell. The centrosome is called the organizing center because it can break down the microtubules and allow the organelles to move around. At the center of the centrosome is where the commands are made called the centrioles, a pair of cylindrical structures. A major part of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 51. The Rights Of Human Rights And Animal Rights Animals are not suppose to be used as food, clothing, entertainment, experimentation or any other purpose and that animals deserve consideration and what is in their best interests. Animal right is a movement that tends to protect animals from being used and abuse by humans. This includes the use of animals for anything that causes them pain and suffering, such as medical experiments, imprisonment in circuses and zoos, and fur production. Animal rights support the idea that all animals are to be treated humanely and away from pain, suffering or murder. They shouldn t be used as food, fur or entertainment. Animal rights seek to promote treatment of living beings through legislation, protest campaigns, research public events and other techniques such as celebrity spokesman ship. Animals are also the creatures living on earth with us. If people say animals should be killed and served us as food, then why don t we eat human? Human have the same nutrition that could be served, there s no point to say that killing human is criminal but killing animal is legal. Animals have the right to live in condition that in benefit and satisfy their nature needs, which include freedom, enough space and environment. But people draw negative attention to animal related issue; they give out the wholly false information. For example on one website there was a picture of some sheep gathered into a holding yard and the caption said that, this is now sheep live all the time. They totally fail to mention the green field in the picture, with no doubt, it is where the sheep will not be returned once they have been sheared, or even killed. In today s society, people create some organization for fighting their government toward freedom and rights. They are fortunate because they have ability to speak for themselves. How about animals? People are always taking advantages from animals by killing and entertaining, and sadly they don t have a voice to fight against it. Some of you might say, if animals cannot be killed for food, everyone will need to become vegetarian, and getting the right amount of protein per day will be more difficult. And from the traditional Christian view, they also think that god has created animals for the use of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
