Red’s Redemption- Shawshank Redemption
The Shawshank Redemption follows the lives of Ellis Red Redding and Andy Dufresne and their
twenty year stint at the Shawshank State Penitentiary. Red (a guilty man) is serving a life sentence for
murder, Andy (an innocent man) is serving consecutive life sentences for the murder of his wife and
her lover. Throughout the film, Red and Andy form an unlikely friendship that transcends age, race,
and class boundaries that ultimately leads to Red s spiritual redemption and freedom.
The film is set up for a classic white and black pairing with a magical negro narrative, however, The
Shawshank Redemption subverts expectations. Red defies the cinema stereotype of the mystical black
man or the Magical Negro because he is portrayed with dignity, because he is the main character and
everyman, because he is not extraordinarily wise or supernatural (though he does give advice, it is not
his only or main role in the text), and he survives the film having learned a lesson from a white
character. This denunciation is significant because it is a rejection of common black/white race
relation stereotypes, and because it is a landmark replacement of negative stereotypes with positive
realisms in cinema.
Celebrated director Spike Lee coined the term at a Yale conference during which he addressed race

Ernest Hemingway uses his unique writing style to captivate audiences with A Clean, Well Lighted
Place. Mainly through a few short pieces of carefully crafted dialogue that not only establish setting
and push the thin plot but also convey the central theme of existentialism. Hemingway s use of plot is
brilliant. Hemingway has a way of structuring his stories as to not confuse the reader. Hemingway s
plot keeps the story moving at a quick pace, and makes the story read smoothly. A Clean, Well Lighted
Place is a short story that contains mostly of dialogue. It is hard to identify what it is about
Hemingway s plot that works so well. Barbra A. Archana states, The simple story line is so deftly
handled with controlled techniques that the outcome leaves an indelible effect. The mere four page
story, evocatively chiseled and crafted, remains a chilling little masterpiece (Archana 3). Barbra A.
Archana s thoughts can help a reader of Hemingway s work appreciate his work s plot. In Hemingway
s story, the reader first sees an old deaf man sitting by himself in a café drinking away his troubles.
The story tells us that the old man had recently attempted to hang himself, but failed when his niece
saved him. Hemingway has a way of making A Clean, Well Lighted Place more than just a simple
story. The focus of the story is two waiters, differing in age. The two waiters spend the story trying to
predict the reasons that were contributing to the old man s depression. The story begins in a unique
way. It begins in such a way that there is no way the reader can predict the upcoming conflict. As the
plot moves forward the reader learns more about the old man. The reader, at first imagines a conflict is
about to arise between the drunken, old man and a couple of tired waiters, but the real conflict is much
more philosophical in nature. As the waiters discuss the old man s pitiable life, the reader becomes
aware of their opposing views of life. By the end of the story, the reader is no longer focusing on the
old man or the younger waiter but rather on the older waiter and the existential concepts he comes to

Achebe portrays the life of the Ibo tribe before the first touch of the white men. Before the colonial
infiltration the Ibo had a very cyclic view of time. Their beleifs and rituals were practiced the same rit
at the same time every year. Where as the white man s traditions and view of time were much more
linear. Right from the Ibo s first encounter with the whites, the reader can observe the cycle as being
unchangeably altered. It is the coming of thei missionaries which brings the disruption. After
thousands of years of unviolated and untouched traditions, Okonkwo returns after just seven years of
exile and finds his village turned upside down. In addition, the Ibo people fail to recognize him as a
leader. Their new religon and government and trading stores were very much in the people s eyes and
