Wave Gangs Research Paper
At 15, AC joined a friend s neighborhood gang called Hoodstarz. Sahiah was also a member, but by
2011 she had left to run with a different crew, the Wave Gang. Their friends think her switch had to do
with a new boyfriend who was in the Waves, and that, to make good on it, she decided to shoot one of
her former allies from Hoodstarz.
So it was that AC, home for Easter break, encountered Sahiah as he tried to ride his bike down Bristol
Street.
Cho! he yelled out to her.
Woo! she and the boys with her replied.
Any Brownsville teenager who happened to hear the exchange would have immediately understood.
Cho was the Hoodstarz greeting, the equivalent of AC flashing a gang sign; Woo was the Wave Gang s
code word. Sahiah and the Waves were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People used to walk out of their homes without the fear of their children being harmed. However, the
increase of gang violence in Brownsville, has lead many people to fear being outside of their homes,
due to the fear of being robbed or murdered. Wave Gang and Hood Starz are two popular gangs in
Brownsville, and are believed to be the blame for six homicides and thirty two shooting episodes in
2012 (Kormanik). These gangs strictly focus on being in control of certain streets and buildings in
Brownsville, which leads them to viciously mark their territory. For example, in October of 2012 there
was a rooftop episode in which these two gangs were shooting from roof to roof. As a result, Zurana
Horton was fatally shot and murdered while attempting to shield her children from the bullets, leaving
residents of Brownsville terrified (Kormanik). Residents do not feel comfortable allowing their
children to play outside because they feel that gangs have terrorized their neighborhood. This is a
major issue because it should never be acceptable for people to feel uncomfortable in a place where
they pay thousands of dollars for rent. Teenagers are turning to gangs simply because they are bored
and are not occupied. They are not in school or involved in any sort of enrichment programs. Although
several gangs came together to march in solidarity with clergy for peace, gang violence and the use of
guns have rapidly increased. There are so many shootings that occur on a daily basis that cops are
struggling to convict the murders of the crimes committed (News 12). Furthermore, in 2014,
Brownsville was the lead for New York City shootings. The 73rd Precinct, which is located in
Brownsville, New York has logged more shooting victims than any other precinct. As mentioned
before, the reason for this is because children are

There are many various conditions and diseases affecting the endocrine system. Here we will discuss
several and describe the endocrine gland, hormone, target tissue, symptoms, causes, and treatment
options. The human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) test is done to check for the hormone hCG in blood
or urine (Staff, 2012). The hCG hormone is made during pregnancy by the placenta or can be
abnormally made by certain tumors. The hCG test can be performed to test if a woman is pregnant or
not, as part of a screening test for birth defects, in a woman who may have abnormal tissue growth in
her uterus, a molar pregnancy, or a cancer in the uterus rather than a normal pregnancy. HCG levels

Later it was discovered that anabolic steroids could facilitate the growth of skeletal muscle which led
to abuse by bodybuilders, weightlifters, and athletes in other sports. Abuse of anabolic steroids can
cause acne, breast development in men, heart attacks, and liver cancer. Most side effects are reversible
if the abuser stops taking the drugs, but some are permanent, such as voice deepening in females.
Possible health consequences for men are infertility, shrinking of the testicles, and male pattern
baldness while with women enlargement of the clitoris, and excessive growth of body hair can
happen. It can affect the musculoskeletal cardiovascular system, liver, skin, cause infection, and have
psychiatric effects such as rage, aggression, mania, and delusions. Treatment of anabolic steroid abuse
uses medications to restore the hormonal system after its disruption, and medication to target specific
withdrawal symptoms. To reduce the risk of ovarian or breast cancer some choose to have a procedure
done known as an oophorectomy. This is a removal of your ovaries on each side of your uterus that
contain eggs and secrete the hormones that control your reproductive cycle. This greatly reduces the
amount of hormones estrogen and progesterone circulating in your body which is the hormones breast
and ovarian cancers need to grow. Though a generally safe procedure with small risk complications

Operation Barbarossa Book Review
The Second World War was history s most brutal conflict ever witnessed over the course of mankind.
The conflict bred a whole sleuth of technological innovations, death and destruction, large scale
genocides, and completely reshaped the world afterwards. It set the path for a prolonged nuclear arms
race between capitalist and communist countries and had huge implications for third world countries
that are still affected by the events of the war today. Of all the fronts of the war; whether it be the
Pacific Theatre which pitted the Allies against the fanatical and suicidal Japanese army or Western
Europe with the Allied invasion of Normandy and Operation Overlord. No front of the war proved to
be more costly and devastating than the Eastern Front ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In an excerpt from The Journal of Historical Review by Daniel Michaels, he examines the divisive
historical climate of the Eastern Front in modern times amongst many historians. Daniel Michaels
cites a wide array of accounts from different historians to greatly detail the tactics and actions
employed by both the German and the Soviet military during World War II; going as far as to discuss
the estimated military might in terms of the amount of personal and armor of both sides. Michaels
establishes several differing topics regarding the front, from propaganda, to the controversy of
whether or not Operation Barbarossa was a suicidal plan from the very start, and whether or not Stalin
was an effective military leader for the Soviets. In one such instance, Michaels discusses a claim made
by Russian historian, Viktor Suvorov, in his novel known as Suicide where he claims that the mere
notion of the Wehrmacht attacking the Soviets might as well been, as the title states, suicide. Michaels
merely paraphrases the novel s main idea, stating that Suvorov argued that Hitler and the Nazi
leadership were irresponsible in launching a war against the much larger, better prepared, and better
armed Soviet Union in the absurd belief that the USSR could be defeated in 90 days July August
September. Hitler and the German high command unpardonably underestimated the strength of the
Soviet armed forces, which Stalin had been building up since the mid 1920s (Michaels). The division
over the validity of the argument that the Germans had no chance at defeating the Soviets still remains
somewhat contentious even today, and Michaels creates discussions out of several more topics
regarding the decisive front of World War

College Debt And Student Completion And Attendance

College Debt and Student Completion and Attendance In mid 2010 higher education debt surpassed
credit card debt at $830 billon dollars(Clemmitt 877 900). Debt has become an increasing problem for
students who want to attend college. As more students try to further their education, tuition rises and
so does the amount of loans taken out each year. According to Belkin, Students attending public four
year institutions this academic year are paying an average of $12,620, up $220 from last year, for
tuition, room and board, meaning that tuition is only growing not decreasing from previous
years(Belkin n.p.). Many people debate over whether they should attend college and be in debt or if
they should get a job somewhere that allows them to live a comfortable life debt free. Two thirds of
college graduates have to take out loans in order to get through college(Dwyer, McCloud, Hodson
1133 1155). Many people question, Does rising college debt limit who attends and completes college?
, while many people have different opinions on this particular subject, I believe that it depends on the
student and their situation if college debt limits who attends and completes college because it depends
on their financial stability, it depends on if they are borrowing the right amount and it depends on if
their degree provides them with the means to pay back their loans, however, many people would
disagree with me and say that yes, college

Dallas Cowboys Fandom Discourse Community
Joining into a fandom discourse community has more extravagant depth than the simplistic claiming a
team and representing them solely on game night. Authentic members develop deep emotional
investment into the events that circulate around their team. Whether it be voluntary or unknowingly,
these passionate individuals over any given subject or matter often find themselves surrounded with or
acquainted with those of similar connotation. This is how discourse communities are developed,
through this unification of individuals over common interests. As a Cowboys fan myself i ve had the
experience of being shoulder to shoulder next to a stranger sharing excitement and roaring with joy as
if we ve known one another our whole lives. The bonds you can make through this discourse
community is what gives it importance. The Dallas Cowboys NFL football team are a prime example
of a fandom discourse community. They aren t solely influencing people in the Dallas,Texas area but
fans are extended all around the U.S. As a member of a fandom discourse community, it is more than
just cheering for the team passionately, it involves knowing the team and showing that you are an
authentic fan. To receive the credibility and status of a fan you must do more than simply go out and
purchase the gear while the team is performing at a prosperous rate. It s deeper than those adorned in
the jersey of the current most popular team. It s about loyalty, it s about the history, and hoping for a

The Pagan Origins of Christianity Essay
The first part of this paper will explore the mystery religions, the reasons behind their popularity, and
the Hellenistic world in which they grew that began with Alexander the Great. Next, their
characteristics and connections first with Judaism and later with Christianity will be more deeply
discussed. In the second part it will be shown that the mystery religions helped to clear the pathway
for the Christianization of the Greco Roman world by men such as Paul the Apostle. Finally, the
Emperor Constantine s role in this story will be mentioned, during whose reign the mystery religions
declined and Christianity became the major religion of Europe and the near east. The paper will

After learning these mysteria, members were considered reborn or born again. Christianity in fact
began along these lines of practice. Its most important ceremony, the Mass or Eucharist, in which the
body and blood of Christ were symbolically eaten in the forms of bread and wine, was forbidden to all
but a select few who had completed three levels of initiation. Most early Christians, whether of Jewish
or Gentile origin, would have been familiar the concept of mysteria. Throughout the Mediterranean
world, religious communities based on this idea of secret teachings thrived.
Another common element in the mystery religions was their tendency to worship the divine on what
we today would think of as a higher spiritual level than standard Greek and Roman religions did. The
idea of a spiritual world as separate from the material world, first promoted by Plato, was fully
adopted by the mystery religions and provided them with a basis for belief in life after death.
Conversely, ancient Greco Roman religion and Judaism contained nothing that addressed this new
concept of separate worlds. Traditional public worship in both Jewish and Gentile communities
generally emphasized the material world in its requests for good crops, healthy children and success in
business. Worship in a closed

Same Sex Marriage Should Be Legalized . The Same Sex Marriage
Same sex marriage should be legalized
The same sex marriage has been widely debated in many countries for a long time. It is
an important issue because it concerns basic moral and human rights. People all over the world
come to the United States in search of freedom and equality. Being able to marry anyone, no
matter the gender, is a freedom of right, but if that freedom of right is taken away from people
than there is no equality. Homosexual people in the United States are people that deserve
freedom and equality and taking away their right to marriage is taking away their equality with
the rest of Americans. Even though certain religions are against same sex marriage, same sex ... Show

Writing for the majority, Justice
Anthony Kennedy states that no union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the
highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. Kennedy goes on to say that gay
and lesbian couples ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them
that right. ( Nasci1). I think this amendment protects the rights of homosexuals. Same sex
marriage should be legal because all individuals have the same right in society; same sex couples
can constitute a good based family. It is just a way to make official a common union nowadays,
even there are religious issue; because it is not related to polygamy; and because love matters
and it does not differ in nature according to the sex of its object or the person who experiences it.
Prior to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling, same sex marriage is only legal in some states.
Some states do not agree with same sex marriage. Same sex marriage was legal in 36 states and
the District of Columbia. In 19 of those states. (Nascri). I think same sex marriage should be
legal. The state should not say anything about agreeing to an adult s way of life. If two people
love each other and want to get married, regardless of their partner s color, religion, nationality or
gender, they should be allowed to do so love and marriage should be purely a personal choice.

Durkheim s Account of the Importance of Rituals in Modern...
Durkheim s account of the importance of rituals in modern society
Durkheim s theories on ritual are an integral part of his work on religion, outlined in his book The
Elementary Forms of Religious Life . Rites are defined by Durkheim as determined modes of action
(Durkheim, 1915, pg. 36). They are ceremonies that are active expressions of particular beliefs or
aspects of a religion. It is necessary to consider and assess the theories on religion before examining
and assessing those on rites and ritual specifically. Durkheim studied Australian totem tribes in order
to uncover the elementary forms of religious life and to gain something of an insight into the origins
and functions of religion. He believed that religions served a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

However, a flag is also an example of the profane; it has a material existence. The sacred is thus
projected onto this profane object and despite it merely being a piece of fabric it represents much more
to the people. It represents the feelings of patriotism and community and closeness (Cuff et al. 2006).
A totem is a profane object or animal that is seen as sacred, and is worshipped by all members of a
religious society. Because all the individuals of a religious society follow the same duties and rituals
associated with the totem, they are morally bound to one another (Giddens, 1972, pg. 227). He
theorised that religion and ritual produced categories of understanding ; the basic categories, which
cover the ways in which objects are perceived; for instance all objects can be seen to occupy time and
space. These categories are also perceived in the same way by all the members of the society, so
religion also influences the very basis by which people think about the world. The concept of moral
unity is still observable in religious communities today, especially in smaller cultures. However, larger
industrialised societies tend to be more divided and there are more varieties in belief in a given
society. Furthermore, the increase in secularisation has meant that the functional aspects of religion, as
outlined by Durkheim have not had an effect on those who are not religious. The example, of the
national flag; however, indicates that

Figurative Language In Jeanne Duprau s The City Of Ember
In Jeanne DuPrau s book The City of Ember it takes place in a very dark city without power or
electricity and nobody s happy. And when two kids are presented with the opportunity to help save
their city and risk their lives, they are the ones who want to do so. They go on this journey and hit
many obstacles on the way but they have the mindset to never give up and it may or may not help
them. One theme that can be supported throughout the book is that when someone risks their life for
others they can earn great respect from other people and other peers.
The theme in the story The City of Ember is shown early on in the book and it is represented by using
author s craft. The author s craft that is being used in the book is figurative language, such as similes
and metaphors. She uses figurative language in many different ways that can support the theme. For
example Fear had settled over the city. Lina felt it like a cold chill (Duprau 85). This is a good
example of figurative language and it also supports the theme. This is a good example, because it is
describing how bad the city is and also how Lina realized she needed to take charge in saving the city.
Duprau also uses another good example of figurative language towards the beginning also. For
instance it states in the book Once they are out the door, Lizzie said goodbye and scurried away as if
Linas bad luck were a disease that she might catch (Duprau 58). This is a good representation because
it is leading up to the

A Brief Overview of Porn and the 20th Century
Porn and technology:
Pornography has, more than any other type of media, been on the bleeding edge of technology.
Pushing new mediums to their limit, usually in the last way they were ever intended to be used (Gross,
2010). We start off the 20th Century with the Half tone printing process being only two decades old.
This was the first process that allowed images to be inexpensively reproduced. Magazines were the
leading pornographic medium, and they were only available by mail. Then, with the advent of film,
the Stag films were first produced in Germany and Latin America. With the arrival of do it yourself
film equipment in the 1940 s anyone could make a film. The problem was it required a lab to make
mass copies, and since porn was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This concept was later perfected with webcams and credit cards, giving the user full control over a

Accepting Porn: Since the accidental discovery of the first pornography at Pompii in 1592 porn has
had a bad reputation. It is a Victorian word first defined by Webster as Licentious painting or literature
. From its very beginning pornography was outlawed and banned from the public. In the beginning of
the 20th century one could be jailed for even viewing a stag film. This may of hurt the quality of porn
but it the principal of supply and demand stayed intact, and there was always an overwhelming
demand. The way that demand has been supplied has changed drastically throughout the 20th century.
Porn went from socially unacceptable to a social phenomenon. Public opinion, slowly, overturned
government rule. The main reason porn became more acceptable was because masturbation became
more socially acceptable (Paul, 2005). In the early 1900 s we see masturbation as an act someone took
shame in, because it meant that person didn t have anyone to have sex with. In modern times
masturbation is said to be healthy by health care professionals and although it is not spoken of often, it
is accepted. When porn was first discovered by the Victorians within the Roman ruins of Pompii there
was a major fear that the lower educated, working class would do nothing all day but sit at home and

Nuclear Waste Management Essay
The disposal of nuclear waste is quickly becoming the most important issue facing the environmental
community today. Nearly twenty percent of our nation s electricity is being supplied by approximately
100 nuclear power plants that are operating in the United States. Currently, most of the nuclear waste
created by these power plants is being housed temporarily in storage facilities and although the total
amount of nuclear waste produced in one year is small, the need to find a permanent method of
disposing this waste is rapidly growing. The problem is everyone wants to live the lifestyle nuclear
power provides, but no one wants to pay the price. Where do we put the waste and who should have to

The three selected sites were Hanford, Washington; Deaf Smith County, Texas; and Yucca Mountain,
Nevada. The Yucca Mountain Project is now being put through the necessary steps for completion.
Yucca Mountain is located on government owned land in a remote area of Nevada. The proposed plan
is the first national permanent waste facility and will cost an estimated 6.3 billion dollars. The project
will include borrowing massive tunnels through the mountain s inner rock and then placing the storage
tanks inside. Obviously, there is much public concern over the project. One of the largest concerns is
the possibility of seismic activity rupturing the tunnel and/or canisters. At present, the 104th US
Congress, house Resolution 1924 proposed to make Hanford, Washington, the western US site for
temporary storage, and it would be by default the permanent disposal place of spent nuclear fuel from
US reactors. This resolution stemmed from a growing recognition that Yucca Mountains, in Nevada, is
a less than brilliant location for this purpose. The US government has no fallback position should the
project at Yucca Mountain fail. Yucca Mountain is not a sound solution for the disposal of spent
nuclear fuel. The decision to site Yucca Mountain as a waste repository was based on politics, not
science. There continues to be much controversy over the issue and many questions regarding the

Horniman Horticulture
Background
Horniman Horticulture is a whole sale nursery business that has been owned by Maggie and Bob for
three years. They have seen an increase in business and number of plants grown at the nursery and are
expecting demand to continue to grow. In 2005, the business s profit margin was expected to grow to
5.8% up from 3.1% in 2003. This projected growth seems accurate considering Maggie s conservative
approach with the companies cash balance. Handling the finances, Maggie dislikes debt financing
because of her fear of holding too much inventory and thus not being able to make interest payments.
Since the business relies on good weather conditions with some mature plants taking years to grow,
severe weather can destroy this inventory. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Past 2004, net working capital in 2005 was $97,200 which is 1.6x the net income of $60,800. If they
continue to increase their net working capital like they have in the past, the projected net working
capital for 2006 would be $235,900 which would cause them a negative cash balance of 193,000.
When you look at the balance sheet in Exhibit B we can see that the current assets have increased 19%
and total assets increased 14.4%. This is due primarily to the increase in inventory and accounts
receivable. In the four years from 2002 to 2005 inventory has increased 8.7% and accounts receivable
has increased 16.4%. Due to this, the cash balance has decreased from $120,100 all the way down to
$9,400. In addition in 2005, the cash balance went below their comfort level of $10,000 down to
$9,400. This is not meeting their expectation of their 8% minimum of total revenue target.
Financial Ratio Analysis Even though their business was growing significantly, and they were
experiencing a steady increase in revenues, they were seeing a huge decrease in their cash. The reason
for this is because of their recent change to an increase in business from small nurseries. By looking at
the financial ratios, even though they are increasing in sales, you can tell that they are relaxed on their
accounts receivable and credit terms. Each year it takes them longer to collect their money. This is due
to the fact that the carrying cost of inventory is harder for the

The Secret Of NIMH Film Analysis
The Secret of NIMH plays with many different filming techniques in order to tell an amazing story.
The story is centered around a widowed mouse, Mrs. Brisby, who s child has fallen ill. Timmy, one of
her children, has fallen ill with ammonia and cannot be moved until he recovers. This is a problem
through because it s almost time for the farmer to begin plowing the fields. If the family does not
move they will be killed by the tractor. The tension and emotion of this film is excellently enhanced
by the lighting, music, shot length and color of each scene. Early on it is plain to see what Mrs. Brisby

The music increases in tempo and becomes louder in order to raise tension. Time is running out as her
home begins to sink. The tempo of the music acts as a clock, ticking away the time Mrs. Brisby and
the rats have to save the children. It mimics her own heart beat as she becomes fearful for their lives.
Once she uses the magic of the stone the music goes from being a terrible thunder to a voice of
triumph. The change in music makes the audience feel the tension release by going from a loud
foreboding sound to a quiet gentle sound. Mrs. Brisby will save her children and everything will be all
right. The lighting also cues the audience in on when the danger has passed. Along with the music the
shots become increasingly low lighted. The light goes dim and gradually becomes darker with every
shot. Once the home had sunken all the way down the light on Mrs. Brisby fades. It is as if her very
life, her will and hope vanish at the presumed loss of her children. The lighting shows the audience
what she feels: sadness, hopelessness, despire and lost. When she uses the stone and its magic the shot
is abruptly interrupted by rays of bright light, turning the scene from low key lighting to high key
lighting. The light is Mrs. Brisby s bravery, returning her hope and allowing her the will to save her
family. It is that beam of light that inspires hope in Mrs. Brisby and she uses it to pull her home from

Inhumanity In Ww1
On June 28th, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated; his death would be the
spark that ignited World War I. Spanning over the course of four years, World War I, due to new
military technologies and the horrors of trench warfare, saw unprecedented levels of carnage and
destruction. Soldiers in the trenches were surrounded by inhumanity and depravity ; they could not
escape the overwhelming boredom, the desire to kill, and the constant threat of disease and shellfire

This concept is clearly captured within the novel when Stephen states This is not a war, this is an
exploration of how far men can be degraded (Faulks 145). During battle, men have to let go of what
they once believed to be right and just in order to survive. Notably, this issue presents itself when the
enemy evolves from a conceptual being into a human, which causes soldiers to realize that they are
killing men who are no different from them. In order to such avoid moral conflicts, soldiers had to
detach themselves from the harsh realities of the war. For instance, Jack, unlike Weir and Brennan,
forces himself to disconnect from his emotions in order to avoid shell shock. Although he destroys
feelings toward his fellow soldiers and the enemy, when faced with the prospect of his own death,
Jack cannot bury his emotions: The indifference he had cultivated, however, was to the extermination
of the enemy, his colleagues, and his friends; he was not [...] indifferent to the prospect of his own
death (Faulks 127). Faulks reveal of Jack s desire to preserve his own life demonstrates the moral
irregularities soldiers faced during the war. Some soldiers, like Jack, are able to disregard the
importance of human life if it results in their own survival; therefore, Faulks suggests that not only
does war lead men to question their own morals but will also destroy these

Masculinity In Macbeth Throughout The Play
In the beginning of the play, Macbeth has a different view of being masculine then Lady Macbeth.
Readers can see that in the beginning of the play Macbeth has some morals and strength as a man
when he says, Macbeth at this point is saying that a real man would not murder for power, they earn
the power. Lady Macbeth changes his idea of masculinity when she keeps telling Macbeth what kind
of man he has to be, and she accuses Macbeth of not adhering to the typical male stereotype that he
should want to be. Lady Macbeth throughout the play teases and provokes her husband. Lady Macbeth
does this knowing that once she pushes hard enough, Macbeth will break and will be desperate to
prove his manhood by doing whatever Lady Macbeth wants. To get Macbeth

Glaciers-The Identity Of A Glaicer
The Identity of a Glaicer Glaciers have helped define the topography of earth for many years. A
glacier is a large mass of ice that has been compacted of snow and ice for a long period of time. The
ice age we will be focusing on is the Pleistocene era, which was a period that began about 2.5 million
years ago and ended about 10,000 years ago (513). This was the most recent ice age where it helped
formed our present day lands. During this time, ice covered about 19 million square miles which was
about 1/3 of earth s land surface (515). Many parts of all the continents were covered with ice and that
had a great effect on our topography due to the glaciers it created. The two primary types of glaciers
are continental ice sheets and mountain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The moraines is a general term for glacier deposited landforms composed of till (526). The features
usually are irregular and is normally longer than wider. The three types of moraines in glacial
deposition of ice sheets are terminal, recessional and ground. Terminal moraine is the front part of a
glacier where all the power is. Although glaciers may appear to stop moving forward, the internal part
of the glacier continues to give strength to its movement. Recessional moraine is right behind the
terminal moraine where the ice would spread out putting pressure out to the edges in bulges. The last
type is called ground moraine and that is when large quantities of till are laid down from underneath
the glacier rather than from its edge (527). A feature we see from the glaciers deposition is an
elongated hill (527) called a drumlin. These long, small hills that are usually in groups, are much
smaller than moraines but still made predominantly of

The researcher will use the population of Longview, Missouri to collect the data for this program
evaluation. The current population will be pulled from seven public schools and three private schools.
The population will be approximately 4,000 students from public and private schools on the Longview
area. The methods that will be used to collect this data will be the use of a survey, focus groups, and
historical data collected from local law enforcement and the board of education. The data will be
collected pre program implementation and post implementation for comparison purposes. The
researcher s direction of this study is to develop sample sizes that will represent the population of
students in grades K 12th grades. The methodology used to identify this population will be purposive
sampling. Purposive sampling is when a researcher picks the participants on purpose, as they are
considered the most appropriate for the study. As noted earlier, the purpose of this study is to
determine whether the Longview Drug Education program will have a positive or negative impact on
students drug use. Therefore, participants must be in the city of Longview school system and be in
grades K 12th grade. Due to the time restraints and cost issue, the survey will be only distributed to
the children meeting the earlier criteria. The survey will include question pertaining the objectives of
the program. For the purpose of this evaluation, the researcher elected to do web based survey.

all of the bodies burning, the fear in Thomas heart, and the utter terror all around him could not be

Three hours later, another 529 Lancasters approached the city, but this time they were armed with
firebombs. Another onslaught by 311 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B 17 Flying Fortress

of Dresden was burning. Flames of thousands of fires consumed air from outside and sucked it in with
the force of a hurricane, spreading the fire and suffocating thousands of victims (Steele 2). Most of
Dresden s baroque buildings fell to the ground. Several people were cowering by the entrance, wrote
one of the victims, Others were on the steps. You could recognise that the corpses had human shapes,

Greek Alphabet
Many scholars have yet to prove the origin of Greek alphabet. However, one fact is for certain: the
origin of Greek alphabet does not mean the origin of the writing system to the Greek language. Not a
completely new invention, the Greek alphabet is undoubtedly from a script that the Semitic peoples of
Levantine coast used. Originally fashioned by ethnic Phoenician groups, the source alphabet is
connected to the Ugaritic groups of writing systems that developed around the city of Ugarit (Powell
2009: 230). Nevertheless, the source alphabet and the Greek alphabet work differently as the Greek
alphabet had specific signs for vowels that Phoenicians did not. Hence, regarding such differences and
the adaptations of the original source ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, due to the earliest alphabetic inscription from Gabii being dated to 775 and no other
inscriptions yet discovered before the eighth century, such argument to push the date is diminishing,
though not completely eliminated (Powell 2009: 236). In historical terms, with contacts between the
Aegean and the outside world growing during the eighth century and evidence for Phoenician settlers
in the Aegean and Greeks in northern Syria, it is most probable that the origin of Greek alphabet is
from the early eighth century BC.
In addition to the how, where, and when of this alphabet s origin, the reason for its invention is also
vague. Moreover, according to Wilson, this question of why the Greeks adopted and adapted the north
west Semitic script has received relatively little scholarly attention (Wilson 2009: 548). Though
theories of mercantile and poetic origins exist, these theories still pose problems and other
explanations such as for ownership denotation have been offered that need to be further studied.
Hence, this research project intends to undertake the step to investigate the ownership theory as an
explanation for why the Greeks adopted and adapted the alphabet of the Phoenicians.
Hence, it is essential to understand the problems that the existing knowledge of the reason the
monetary and poetic origins generates. The monetary origin begins

The Character of Lady Catherine de Bourgh In Pride and...
Although typically overlooked by the inattentive reader, the minor character can serve a myriad of
literary roles from adding to the overall story elements to distinguishing the character s impact on the
plot. In Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, minor characters play a paramount role in advancing the
plot, reinforcing Austen s tone, and uniquely contributing to the work as a whole. Surprisingly, the
impact of a certain minor character upon the work is illuminated as well as expatiated when analyzed.
Lady Catherine de Bourgh has a much greater impact on the plot, characters, and theme of Pride and
Prejudice that her minor role would suggest. In this way, she advances the plot, emphasizes the theme
of social expectations, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Similar to the way Austen defied social standards by writing in a time of prejudice against female
authors, Elizabeth defies the traditional social conventions of marriage by refusing Mr. Collins s
proposal, as well as by ignoring Lady Catherine s demands. Elizabeth sarcastically brushes off Lady
Catherine s threats to ruin her if she accepts Darcy s proposal as heavy misfortunes (305) and
distances herself from the situation by declaring that it will have no affect on [her] (305). In addition
to advancing the plot and contributing to the theme, Lady Catherine de Bourgh provides a satirical
image of the aristocracy, as well a foil to Mrs. Bennett through her immoderate pride and arrogance.
Lady Catherine s actions and beliefs as an aristocrat extend far past acceptable decorum to the point
that her immodesty satirizes her as an archaic relic spewing only hot air. Upon her arrival at the
Bennett household, she rudely scorns the Longbourn estate by referring to it as a very small park
(302). Lady Catherine also dispraises Elizabeth s upbringing by obnoxiously asserting that without a
governess [she] must have been neglected (142). Elizabeth underscores the hilarity of her ladyship s
assumptions by assuring her that had not been the case (143). Lady Catherine foolishly assumes that
her high social status will enable her to dissuade Elizabeth from marrying Darcy, and her declamation
to Elizabeth that honor, decorum, prudence,

United States V. Melgar Case Study
Even If This Court Was To Find That Ms. Brie s Authority to Consent Was Ambiguous, This Court
Must Still Find that the District Court Properly Denied the Defendant Appellant s Motion.
1. The district court correctly held that ambiguity should not defeat her reasonable apparent authority
because allowing it to do so would impose an unreasonable burden on police officers.
The district court s holding that allowing ambiguity to defeat apparent authority would unreasonably
burden police officers by forcing them to clarify the consenter s authority over every container within

AAnalysis On Wound Management
Wound management is one of the cornerstones for nursing care however, effective wound care extends
far beyond the application of the wound itself. Nurses may be required to assess, plan, implement, and
evaluate wound care; therefore, order to fill these roles it s critical to have an understanding of the
several different areas of wound care such as, integumentary system, classification of wounds, wound
procedures, and documentation. Knowledge in each of these areas will allow nurses to make well
informed decisions about wound care, and as a result play an active part in wound healing.
Integumentary System
The integumentary system or skin is our body s largest organ, which weighs 20 pounds or more,
accounting for about 16% of total body weight (Thibodeau, 2014, p.93). According to Thibodeau
(2014 p. 145) the: number of structures fitting into 1 square inch of skin: 500 sweat glands; more than
1000 nerve endings; yards of tiny blood vessels; nearly 100 sebaceous glands; 150 sensors for
pressure, 75 for hot, 10 for cold; and millions of cells.
The integumentary system can be broken down into three main categories the Epidermis, Dermis, and
Subcutaneous layer each of which contain certain specialized skin derivatives including hair, nails,
and several kinds of glands.
The outer most layer of the skin or Epidermis contains stratified squamous, keratinized, epithelial
tissue; which lacks blood vessels, and the cells are packed closely together (Sloane, 1994, p.85)

Justice Should Not Be A Solution
Justice Is Up To Us From the very beginning, people have fought. Rather it be over food, shelter, land,
or money, these disagreements have remained ever present in our societies. Where there is
disagreement, there must eventually be a solution. Most of the time this solution can come from the
individual, or individuals, involved in the disagreement. When necessary, a third, impartial party is to
step in and fairly decide what is to happen. Out of all the commotion, no one ever stops to think, What
do I want to happen here, or better yet, How do I want this to happen? In a country christened land of
the free, home of the proud, it is appropriate to assume that everyone gets a fair trial, that everyone is
treated equally in the eyes of the law, and that the government does everything in its power to protect
the innocent and prosecute the bad guys. But that s not exactly the way things work in America. In the
land of the free, home of the proud, the court rooms continue to be influenced by personal prejudice
and the poor, the uneducated, and the mentally ill continue to remain unrepresented. In efforts to better
the nation, the principle of the nation must be upheld and the values of America must be preserved.
Throughout the history of America, prosecution has persisted. From the moment that white men
arrived, confrontation over the ownership of other humans has existed. Some saw this ownership as
fair, others did not. It wasn t until after many long years of war, and

The Sociological Impacts Of Ali Unal And The Spread Of Islam
However, Ali Unal implies there are many benefits and burdens that can be accomplished by
participating in a polygamous relationship. Alongside reducing the possibility of any extramarital
affairs, it also deals with the situation of gender ratios as many countries may have a larger female
population as compared to their male counterparts. Ali Unal s translation is in complete contrast to the
view proposed by Muhammad Asad. The Turkish author highlights the religious and historical
significance of polygamy in spreading the message of Islam. The argument was forwarded that the
marriages of Prophet Muhammad allowed for the development of deeper ties across Arabia even
amongst various tribes who trusted the Prophet for guidance as a result of the formation of new
relationships (Ünal, 2008).If one was to argue for the permissibility of polygamy, it may be implied
that polygamy could spread the essence of Islam through such a way that individuals can interpret the
Quran through the positive actions from the spouses. It is evident both Muhammad Asad and Ali Unal
highlight Surah 4:3 but Ali Unal emphasises the positive sociological impact such relationship can
possess.
The counter view to the above point provides a crucial shift towards the idea that polygamy perhaps
should not be permissible in Muslim communities. It is stated in the Quran, 4:129
Ye are never able to be fair and just as between women, even if it is your ardent desire

Analysis Of Woman Holding A Balance
Exploring Depth with Vermeer Woman Holding a Balance is a Northern European piece of art painted
by Johannes Vermeer between the dates of 1662 and1665. This painting was created out of oils. This
fascinating piece of art uses light and color to depict its depth and space. Woman Holding a Balance
has so much to interpret as far as depth and space through the form and structure of the artwork. This
piece of art is formed from blue, gray, white, and yellow colors giving it a harmonious act to it.
Vermeer created this piece of art as a woman holding a balance with her right hand. As we analyze this
painting starting off from the top left portion, there is a window with light entering the space to which
this woman is in. The window is covered by a yellow curtain. Next to the window is a dark, framed
mirror, which is close to a black color. Underneath the mirror, Vermeer painted a table with gray and
yellowish pearls laid down over it. There is also a dark blue piece of cloth resting on the top left
portion of the table. Right in front of the table we have the woman holding the scale, and she is
wearing a blue and white jacket with a hoodie that gently falls over to the sides of her head. In
addition, on the far back part of the painting, right behind the woman, Vermeer painted The Last
Judgment . The Last Judgement shows Christ with his arms extended on judgment day with people
looking up at him from beneath. All this, as far as the window, table, pearls, woman,

could just be to get a dream job or go somewhere in the world. I believe that it is worth is to dream. In
the end a dream gives someone something to work for at life and to keep pushing on for it also makes
them feel good to look forward to something in the future say that they finally get to go to that place
that they have dreamt of going to the anticipation of them going there make them feel good about
themselves because they worked so hard for it. In class we read books about dreams we read
documents about dreams and how some people believe in dreams and how some people don t. We

I believe it is worth it to dream because it gives a person something to work for. Some people believe
that if somebody just sits around and dreams, then it will come true. Some people now how dreams
work, they have to work for a dream rather than just sitting and waiting their whole life. We can also

Increase Student Achievement And Increase Teacher...
Abstract This topic brief is going to look at performance pay and if this type of program can be used
to increase student achievement and increase teacher accountability with maintaining a positive
culture. This is currently a hot topic in many states and there are states that are looking to adopt this
program and some states are dropping it. In some schools this type of program has proven to raise
student achievement, but people argue that although these schools have had success, there is little
evidence that shows that the results are sustainable for long term success.
Keywords: student achievement, merit pay, teacher accountability
Performance Pay Program I chose to focus on this topic because it is a topic that I have strong feelings
about when it comes to education. It is a topic that is highly debated in our country and is a program
that is said to fix the problem that some say we have in public education. In fact, we see this topic
being discussed by the President and Secretary of Education as they have instituted the 4.3 billion
dollar Race to the Top to enforce student achievement data into teacher evaluations and help enforce
the concept of pay for performance. In this paper, we are going to look at performance pay and how
we use student achievement to base a teacher s effectiveness and if it is truly an effective way of
helping increase our nation s educational success. The United States is usually compared to other

nice reason why it s difficult to call for help (the condo is housed on an island and the police are
across the bridge.) The movie also effectively flips the protagonists around halfway through, which is
rarely seen in a slasher

The Roles Of Women In The American Civil War
The American Civil War was a four year long war which consisted of the Union (with states such as
Maine, New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, and others) and the Confederacy (which consisted of
states such as Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, and others). This war lasted between
the twelfth of April, 1861 and the ninth of May, 1865. Estimated death count throughout the entirety
of the war is estimated between sixty five thousand and eighty five thousand. That s nearing on almost
a million American lives, with brothers and fathers fighting one another in the brutal and heart
wrenching war. Many states in the north, the Union states, had completely industrialized themselves,
most with huge factories with hard workers in those factories ... Show more content on

They felt as if they were important, as if they finally held some amount of power, and yet at the same
time they didn t because they still weren t equal with males at that time. This sparked a movement
which would last over a century until women would finally get what they were fighting for. This just
shows that maybe women didn t ever have a specific role in the American Civil War. Sure, they were
supposed to be the mothers, the sisters, the wives, and yet so many women went beyond what others
wanted them to be. They became fighters. They became soldiers. They became nurses. They became
spies. They became smugglers. These women were casted into a long four year play with the role to be
the worriers who cared for the warriors, until they decided that the damsel in distress wasn t the part

Examples Of Machiavellian Characters In The Governor
Machiavellian Character Essay: The Governor Brian Blake, also known as The Governor, presented a
terror far greater than cannibalistic zombies throughout seasons two and three of the hit show, The
Walking Dead. He was psychotic; driven mad by the death of his daughter. Using his position as
governor within a small group of survivors and refugees of the zombie apocalypse, he manipulated,
terrorized, lied, cheated, many people in order to secure and maintain his position of power. Out of the
list given in the prompt for this paper, The Governor matches at least seven of the twelve
Machiavellian characteristics. The concepts exhibited most strongly in The Governor, however, are the
concepts of the end justifies the means and the use of force to avoid danger. In the midst of a zombie
apocalypse, the prioritization of self preservation above all else is understandable. However, even
when he had the resources to help himself and nearly 100 other people, The Governor still slaughtered
people who posed even the slightest threat to his position of power. Machiavelli writes for although
the act condemn the doer, the end may justify him. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He uses force to protect both his position as a leader in within his community of refugees, and he uses
force to keep himself out of physical danger. He himself says, after he killed is right hand man the
man who was arguably his most loyal supporter in this life, you kill or die, or die and kill. In several
instances, this has been the case. In one particular instance, The Governor and his supporters happen
upon a group of survivors, all of whom were members of the military, and killed them all without a
second thought; he stole all their weapons and food. Throughout his lifespan in the series, The
Governor has looked out solely for himself. He meticulously manipulates people in order to maintain
his position of power, and to preserve his

Analysis Of Albert Camus BookThe Plague
Shaver 1
I would rather live my life as if there is a God and die to find out there isn t, than live as if there isn t
and to die to find out that there is.
Albert Camus, The Fall
In Albert Camus novel The Plague, the author employs three main characters the narrator, Tarrou, and
Father Paneloux to represent extremist views on religion and science in culture. The narrator, Rieux,
most closely resembles Camus own perspective while Tarrou and Father Paneloux represent the
radical views of the two opposite sides. Tarrou lives a life strictly reliant on science and throws faith to
the void; Father Paneloux being the man of religion has no consideration for the world of science.
Rieux often finds himself leaning more towards Tarrou, but with a fuller understanding of Camus
philosophy one can surmise that Rieux is not entirely opposed to the faith culture, and thus excluding
Camus from a full blown postmodernist view (Brizee Oct, 2017). The character of Father Paneloux is
introduced as a stalwart champion of Christian doctrine, (Camus 92) thus leaving the reader with no
curiosity about the qualification of this man from a religious point of view. It is this character s
challenges and responses to hardship that reveal his loyalty to the faith based world that is so
commonly overlooked in Camus novel. The sermons of Father Paneloux are perhaps to be considered
the strongest example of his faith in the face of the plague. The nature of the first sermon is blunt and

Copyright Law And Plagiarism
Most people have heard about Copyright laws and plagiarism, but not everyone knows the full extent
of the protection Copyright laws provide, or the penalties of plagiarizing. First I will go over
Copyright law, what can be Copyrighted, what having a Copyright lets you do, the penalties of
Copyright infringement, and fair use. Next I will go over plagiarism, what can be plagiarized, the
punishments of plagiarism, and the techniques that can be used to avoid plagiarism. And finally I will
go into how Copyright law and plagiarism relate to each other, as well as talking about the public
domain.
First let s look at what Copyright laws protect and the penalties of infringing upon Copyrighted work.
Copyright is a form of protection granted by the government which protects original works of
authorship, such as books, song, movies, computer software, and more, from being stolen. However
facts, ideas, systems, or methods of operation, cannot be Copyrighted. Having a Copyright lets you
reproduce your work, make related works, make copies, and perform or display the work publicly. The
penalties of infringing upon a Copyrighted work are, the infringer may be taken to court, be forced to
pay the damages or lost profits the copyright infringing work cost the creator or the profits the
infringer made off of the stolen work. They could also be forced to pay all attorney fees and court
costs, have the illegal work impounded, and may be jailed. However, most of the time the Copyright

  • 2. Wave Gangs Research Paper At 15, AC joined a friend s neighborhood gang called Hoodstarz. Sahiah was also a member, but by 2011 she had left to run with a different crew, the Wave Gang. Their friends think her switch had to do with a new boyfriend who was in the Waves, and that, to make good on it, she decided to shoot one of her former allies from Hoodstarz. So it was that AC, home for Easter break, encountered Sahiah as he tried to ride his bike down Bristol Street. Cho! he yelled out to her. Woo! she and the boys with her replied. Any Brownsville teenager who happened to hear the exchange would have immediately understood. Cho was the Hoodstarz greeting, the equivalent of AC flashing a gang sign; Woo was the Wave Gang s code word. Sahiah and the Waves were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... People used to walk out of their homes without the fear of their children being harmed. However, the increase of gang violence in Brownsville, has lead many people to fear being outside of their homes, due to the fear of being robbed or murdered. Wave Gang and Hood Starz are two popular gangs in Brownsville, and are believed to be the blame for six homicides and thirty two shooting episodes in 2012 (Kormanik). These gangs strictly focus on being in control of certain streets and buildings in Brownsville, which leads them to viciously mark their territory. For example, in October of 2012 there was a rooftop episode in which these two gangs were shooting from roof to roof. As a result, Zurana Horton was fatally shot and murdered while attempting to shield her children from the bullets, leaving residents of Brownsville terrified (Kormanik). Residents do not feel comfortable allowing their children to play outside because they feel that gangs have terrorized their neighborhood. This is a major issue because it should never be acceptable for people to feel uncomfortable in a place where they pay thousands of dollars for rent. Teenagers are turning to gangs simply because they are bored and are not occupied. They are not in school or involved in any sort of enrichment programs. Although several gangs came together to march in solidarity with clergy for peace, gang violence and the use of guns have rapidly increased. There are so many shootings that occur on a daily basis that cops are struggling to convict the murders of the crimes committed (News 12). Furthermore, in 2014, Brownsville was the lead for New York City shootings. The 73rd Precinct, which is located in Brownsville, New York has logged more shooting victims than any other precinct. As mentioned before, the reason for this is because children are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Here we will discuss several and describe the endocrine gland, hormone, target tissue, symptoms, causes, and treatment options. The human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) test is done to check for the hormone hCG in blood or urine (Staff, 2012). The hCG hormone is made during pregnancy by the placenta or can be abnormally made by certain tumors. The hCG test can be performed to test if a woman is pregnant or not, as part of a screening test for birth defects, in a woman who may have abnormal tissue growth in her uterus, a molar pregnancy, or a cancer in the uterus rather than a normal pregnancy. Later it was discovered that anabolic steroids could facilitate the growth of skeletal muscle which led to abuse by bodybuilders, weightlifters, and athletes in other sports. Abuse of anabolic steroids can cause acne, breast development in men, heart attacks, and liver cancer. Most side effects are reversible if the abuser stops taking the drugs, but some are permanent, such as voice deepening in females. Possible health consequences for men are infertility, shrinking of the testicles, and male pattern baldness while with women enlargement of the clitoris, and excessive growth of body hair can happen. It can affect the musculoskeletal cardiovascular system, liver, skin, cause infection, and have psychiatric effects such as rage, aggression, mania, and delusions. Treatment of anabolic steroid abuse uses medications to restore the hormonal system after its disruption, and medication to target specific withdrawal symptoms. To reduce the risk of ovarian or breast cancer some choose to have a procedure done known as an oophorectomy. This is a removal of your ovaries on each side of your uterus that contain eggs and secrete the hormones that control your reproductive cycle. This greatly reduces the amount of hormones estrogen and progesterone circulating in your body which is the hormones breast and ovarian cancers need to grow. The conflict bred a whole sleuth of technological innovations, death and destruction, large scale genocides, and completely reshaped the world afterwards. It set the path for a prolonged nuclear arms race between capitalist and communist countries and had huge implications for third world countries that are still affected by the events of the war today. In an excerpt from The Journal of Historical Review by Daniel Michaels, he examines the divisive historical climate of the Eastern Front in modern times amongst many historians. Daniel Michaels cites a wide array of accounts from different historians to greatly detail the tactics and actions employed by both the German and the Soviet military during World War II; going as far as to discuss the estimated military might in terms of the amount of personal and armor of both sides. Michaels establishes several differing topics regarding the front, from propaganda, to the controversy of whether or not Operation Barbarossa was a suicidal plan from the very start, and whether or not Stalin was an effective military leader for the Soviets. In one such instance, Michaels discusses a claim made by Russian historian, Viktor Suvorov, in his novel known as Suicide where he claims that the mere notion of the Wehrmacht attacking the Soviets might as well been, as the title states, suicide. Michaels merely paraphrases the novel s main idea, stating that Suvorov argued that Hitler and the Nazi leadership were irresponsible in launching a war against the much larger, better prepared, and better armed Soviet Union in the absurd belief that the USSR could be defeated in 90 days July August September. Hitler and the German high command unpardonably underestimated the strength of the Soviet armed forces, which Stalin had been building up since the mid 1920s (Michaels). The division over the validity of the argument that the Germans had no chance at defeating the Soviets still remains somewhat contentious even today, and Michaels creates discussions out of several more topics regarding the decisive front of World War ... • 5. College Debt And Student Completion And Attendance Thalia Arreola Cynthia Burns English 102 20 April 2015 College Debt and Student Completion and Attendance In mid 2010 higher education debt surpassed credit card debt at $830 billon dollars(Clemmitt 877 900). Debt has become an increasing problem for students who want to attend college. As more students try to further their education, tuition rises and so does the amount of loans taken out each year. According to Belkin, Students attending public four year institutions this academic year are paying an average of $12,620, up $220 from last year, for tuition, room and board, meaning that tuition is only growing not decreasing from previous years(Belkin n.p.). Many people debate over whether they should attend college and be in debt or if they should get a job somewhere that allows them to live a comfortable life debt free. Two thirds of college graduates have to take out loans in order to get through college(Dwyer, McCloud, Hodson 1133 1155). Many people question, Does rising college debt limit who attends and completes college? , while many people have different opinions on this particular subject, I believe that it depends on the student and their situation if college debt limits who attends and completes college because it depends on their financial stability, it depends on if they are borrowing the right amount and it depends on if their degree provides them with the means to pay back their loans, however, many people would disagree with me and say that yes, college ... Authentic members develop deep emotional investment into the events that circulate around their team. Whether it be voluntary or unknowingly, these passionate individuals over any given subject or matter often find themselves surrounded with or acquainted with those of similar connotation. This is how discourse communities are developed, through this unification of individuals over common interests. As a Cowboys fan myself i ve had the experience of being shoulder to shoulder next to a stranger sharing excitement and roaring with joy as if we ve known one another our whole lives. The bonds you can make through this discourse community is what gives it importance. The Dallas Cowboys NFL football team are a prime example of a fandom discourse community. They aren t solely influencing people in the Dallas,Texas area but fans are extended all around the U.S. As a member of a fandom discourse community, it is more than just cheering for the team passionately, it involves knowing the team and showing that you are an authentic fan. To receive the credibility and status of a fan you must do more than simply go out and purchase the gear while the team is performing at a prosperous rate. In the second part it will be shown that the mystery religions helped to clear the pathway for the Christianization of the Greco Roman world by men such as Paul the Apostle. Christianity in fact began along these lines of practice. Its most important ceremony, the Mass or Eucharist, in which the body and blood of Christ were symbolically eaten in the forms of bread and wine, was forbidden to all but a select few who had completed three levels of initiation. Most early Christians, whether of Jewish or Gentile origin, would have been familiar the concept of mysteria. Throughout the Mediterranean world, religious communities based on this idea of secret teachings thrived. Another common element in the mystery religions was their tendency to worship the divine on what we today would think of as a higher spiritual level than standard Greek and Roman religions did. The idea of a spiritual world as separate from the material world, first promoted by Plato, was fully adopted by the mystery religions and provided them with a basis for belief in life after death. Conversely, ancient Greco Roman religion and Judaism contained nothing that addressed this new concept of separate worlds. Traditional public worship in both Jewish and Gentile communities generally emphasized the material world in its requests for good crops, healthy children and success in business. It is an important issue because it concerns basic moral and human rights. People all over the world come to the United States in search of freedom and equality. Being able to marry anyone, no matter the gender, is a freedom of right, but if that freedom of right is taken away from people than there is no equality. I think this amendment protects the rights of homosexuals. Same sex marriage should be legal because all individuals have the same right in society; same sex couples can constitute a good based family. • 12. Durkheim s Account of the Importance of Rituals in Modern... Durkheim s account of the importance of rituals in modern society Durkheim s theories on ritual are an integral part of his work on religion, outlined in his book The Elementary Forms of Religious Life . Rites are defined by Durkheim as determined modes of action (Durkheim, 1915, pg. 36). They are ceremonies that are active expressions of particular beliefs or aspects of a religion. It is necessary to consider and assess the theories on religion before examining and assessing those on rites and ritual specifically. Durkheim studied Australian totem tribes in order to uncover the elementary forms of religious life and to gain something of an insight into the origins and functions of religion. He believed that religions served a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, a flag is also an example of the profane; it has a material existence. The sacred is thus projected onto this profane object and despite it merely being a piece of fabric it represents much more to the people. It represents the feelings of patriotism and community and closeness (Cuff et al. 2006). A totem is a profane object or animal that is seen as sacred, and is worshipped by all members of a religious society. Because all the individuals of a religious society follow the same duties and rituals associated with the totem, they are morally bound to one another (Giddens, 1972, pg. 227). He theorised that religion and ritual produced categories of understanding ; the basic categories, which cover the ways in which objects are perceived; for instance all objects can be seen to occupy time and space. These categories are also perceived in the same way by all the members of the society, so religion also influences the very basis by which people think about the world. The concept of moral unity is still observable in religious communities today, especially in smaller cultures. However, larger industrialised societies tend to be more divided and there are more varieties in belief in a given society. Furthermore, the increase in secularisation has meant that the functional aspects of religion, as outlined by Durkheim have not had an effect on those who are not religious. The example, of the national flag; however, indicates that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. Figurative Language In Jeanne Duprau s The City Of Ember In Jeanne DuPrau s book The City of Ember it takes place in a very dark city without power or electricity and nobody s happy. And when two kids are presented with the opportunity to help save their city and risk their lives, they are the ones who want to do so. They go on this journey and hit many obstacles on the way but they have the mindset to never give up and it may or may not help them. One theme that can be supported throughout the book is that when someone risks their life for others they can earn great respect from other people and other peers. The theme in the story The City of Ember is shown early on in the book and it is represented by using author s craft. The author s craft that is being used in the book is figurative language, such as similes and metaphors. She uses figurative language in many different ways that can support the theme. For example Fear had settled over the city. Lina felt it like a cold chill (Duprau 85). This is a good example of figurative language and it also supports the theme. This is a good example, because it is describing how bad the city is and also how Lina realized she needed to take charge in saving the city. Duprau also uses another good example of figurative language towards the beginning also. For instance it states in the book Once they are out the door, Lizzie said goodbye and scurried away as if Linas bad luck were a disease that she might catch (Duprau 58). This is a good representation because it is leading up to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

We start off the 20th Century with the Half tone printing process being only two decades old. This was the first process that allowed images to be inexpensively reproduced. Magazines were the leading pornographic medium, and they were only available by mail. Then, with the advent of film, the Stag films were first produced in Germany and Latin America. Accepting Porn: Since the accidental discovery of the first pornography at Pompii in 1592 porn has had a bad reputation. It is a Victorian word first defined by Webster as Licentious painting or literature . From its very beginning pornography was outlawed and banned from the public. In the beginning of the 20th century one could be jailed for even viewing a stag film. This may of hurt the quality of porn but it the principal of supply and demand stayed intact, and there was always an overwhelming demand. The way that demand has been supplied has changed drastically throughout the 20th century. Porn went from socially unacceptable to a social phenomenon. Public opinion, slowly, overturned government rule. The main reason porn became more acceptable was because masturbation became more socially acceptable (Paul, 2005). In the early 1900 s we see masturbation as an act someone took shame in, because it meant that person didn t have anyone to have sex with. In modern times masturbation is said to be healthy by health care professionals and although it is not spoken of often, it is accepted. When porn was first discovered by the Victorians within the Roman ruins of Pompii there was a major fear that the lower educated, working class would do nothing all day but sit at home and ... Yucca Mountain is located on government owned land in a remote area of Nevada. The proposed plan is the first national permanent waste facility and will cost an estimated 6.3 billion dollars. The project will include borrowing massive tunnels through the mountain s inner rock and then placing the storage tanks inside. Obviously, there is much public concern over the project. One of the largest concerns is the possibility of seismic activity rupturing the tunnel and/or canisters. At present, the 104th US Congress, house Resolution 1924 proposed to make Hanford, Washington, the western US site for temporary storage, and it would be by default the permanent disposal place of spent nuclear fuel from US reactors. This resolution stemmed from a growing recognition that Yucca Mountains, in Nevada, is a less than brilliant location for this purpose. The US government has no fallback position should the project at Yucca Mountain fail. Yucca Mountain is not a sound solution for the disposal of spent nuclear fuel. In 2005, the business s profit margin was expected to grow to 5.8% up from 3.1% in 2003. This projected growth seems accurate considering Maggie s conservative approach with the companies cash balance. When you look at the balance sheet in Exhibit B we can see that the current assets have increased 19% and total assets increased 14.4%. This is due primarily to the increase in inventory and accounts receivable. In the four years from 2002 to 2005 inventory has increased 8.7% and accounts receivable has increased 16.4%. Financial Ratio Analysis Even though their business was growing significantly, and they were experiencing a steady increase in revenues, they were seeing a huge decrease in their cash. The reason for this is because of their recent change to an increase in business from small nurseries. The change in music makes the audience feel the tension release by going from a loud foreboding sound to a quiet gentle sound. Mrs. Brisby will save her children and everything will be all right. The lighting also cues the audience in on when the danger has passed. Along with the music the shots become increasingly low lighted. The light goes dim and gradually becomes darker with every shot. Once the home had sunken all the way down the light on Mrs. Brisby fades. It is as if her very life, her will and hope vanish at the presumed loss of her children. The lighting shows the audience what she feels: sadness, hopelessness, despire and lost. When she uses the stone and its magic the shot is abruptly interrupted by rays of bright light, turning the scene from low key lighting to high key lighting. The light is Mrs. Brisby s bravery, returning her hope and allowing her the will to save her family. It is that beam of light that inspires hope in Mrs. Brisby and she uses it to pull her home from the mud. It is when she faces the darkest times that her bravery shines the brightest, both visually and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Spanning over the course of four years, World War I, due to new military technologies and the horrors of trench warfare, saw unprecedented levels of carnage and destruction. Soldiers in the trenches were surrounded by inhumanity and depravity ; they could not escape the overwhelming boredom, the desire to kill, and the constant threat of disease and shellfire (Slade 1583). The war claimed the lives of more than 16 million people, and those who survived beyond the battlefield were forever altered. This concept is clearly captured within the novel when Stephen states This is not a war, this is an exploration of how far men can be degraded (Faulks 145). During battle, men have to let go of what they once believed to be right and just in order to survive. Notably, this issue presents itself when the enemy evolves from a conceptual being into a human, which causes soldiers to realize that they are killing men who are no different from them. In order to such avoid moral conflicts, soldiers had to detach themselves from the harsh realities of the war. For instance, Jack, unlike Weir and Brennan, forces himself to disconnect from his emotions in order to avoid shell shock. Although he destroys feelings toward his fellow soldiers and the enemy, when faced with the prospect of his own death, Jack cannot bury his emotions: The indifference he had cultivated, however, was to the extermination of the enemy, his colleagues, and his friends; he was not [...] indifferent to the prospect of his own death (Faulks 127). Faulks reveal of Jack s desire to preserve his own life demonstrates the moral irregularities soldiers faced during the war. Some soldiers, like Jack, are able to disregard the importance of human life if it results in their own survival; therefore, Faulks suggests that not only does war lead men to question their own morals but will also destroy these ... A glacier is a large mass of ice that has been compacted of snow and ice for a long period of time. The ice age we will be focusing on is the Pleistocene era, which was a period that began about 2.5 million years ago and ended about 10,000 years ago (513). This was the most recent ice age where it helped formed our present day lands. During this time, ice covered about 19 million square miles which was about 1/3 of earth s land surface (515). However, one fact is for certain: the origin of Greek alphabet does not mean the origin of the writing system to the Greek language. Not a completely new invention, the Greek alphabet is undoubtedly from a script that the Semitic peoples of Levantine coast used. Originally fashioned by ethnic Phoenician groups, the source alphabet is connected to the Ugaritic groups of writing systems that developed around the city of Ugarit (Powell 2009: 230). However, due to the earliest alphabetic inscription from Gabii being dated to 775 and no other inscriptions yet discovered before the eighth century, such argument to push the date is diminishing, though not completely eliminated (Powell 2009: 236). In historical terms, with contacts between the Aegean and the outside world growing during the eighth century and evidence for Phoenician settlers in the Aegean and Greeks in northern Syria, it is most probable that the origin of Greek alphabet is from the early eighth century BC. In addition to the how, where, and when of this alphabet s origin, the reason for its invention is also vague. Moreover, according to Wilson, this question of why the Greeks adopted and adapted the north west Semitic script has received relatively little scholarly attention (Wilson 2009: 548). Though theories of mercantile and poetic origins exist, these theories still pose problems and other explanations such as for ownership denotation have been offered that need to be further studied. Similar to the way Austen defied social standards by writing in a time of prejudice against female authors, Elizabeth defies the traditional social conventions of marriage by refusing Mr. Collins s proposal, as well as by ignoring Lady Catherine s demands. Elizabeth sarcastically brushes off Lady Catherine s threats to ruin her if she accepts Darcy s proposal as heavy misfortunes (305) and distances herself from the situation by declaring that it will have no affect on [her] (305). In addition to advancing the plot and contributing to the theme, Lady Catherine de Bourgh provides a satirical image of the aristocracy, as well a foil to Mrs. Bennett through her immoderate pride and arrogance. Lady Catherine s actions and beliefs as an aristocrat extend far past acceptable decorum to the point that her immodesty satirizes her as an archaic relic spewing only hot air. Nurses may be required to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate wound care; therefore, order to fill these roles it s critical to have an understanding of the several different areas of wound care such as, integumentary system, classification of wounds, wound procedures, and documentation. Knowledge in each of these areas will allow nurses to make well informed decisions about wound care, and as a result play an active part in wound healing. Integumentary System The integumentary system or skin is our body s largest organ, which weighs 20 pounds or more, accounting for about 16% of total body weight (Thibodeau, 2014, p.93). Out of all the commotion, no one ever stops to think, What do I want to happen here, or better yet, How do I want this to happen? But that s not exactly the way things work in America. In the land of the free, home of the proud, the court rooms continue to be influenced by personal prejudice and the poor, the uneducated, and the mentally ill continue to remain unrepresented. Alongside reducing the possibility of any extramarital affairs, it also deals with the situation of gender ratios as many countries may have a larger female population as compared to their male counterparts. Ali Unal s translation is in complete contrast to the view proposed by Muhammad Asad. The Turkish author highlights the religious and historical significance of polygamy in spreading the message of Islam. The argument was forwarded that the marriages of Prophet Muhammad allowed for the development of deeper ties across Arabia even amongst various tribes who trusted the Prophet for guidance as a result of the formation of new relationships (Ünal, 2008).If one was to argue for the permissibility of polygamy, it may be implied that polygamy could spread the essence of Islam through such a way that individuals can interpret the Quran through the positive actions from the spouses. It is evident both Muhammad Asad and Ali Unal highlight Surah 4:3 but Ali Unal emphasises the positive sociological impact such relationship can possess. The counter view to the above point provides a crucial shift towards the idea that polygamy perhaps should not be permissible in Muslim communities. You had Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, A Nightmare on Elm Street and Silent Night, Deadly Night just to name a few. Today isn t about those little hits, but instead, it s about the even littler guy, the low budget slasher known as The Mutilator (aka Fall Break). Directed by Buddy Cooper, a man who loved slasher films and just wanted to make a fun movie, The Mutilator is a hidden horror gem that deserves to be more recognized than it is. It provides the gore, a bit of nudity and a fun vibe throughout the 86 minute runtime. What more can you ask for in a slasher flick? The Mutilator was presented cut for the longest time, but thankfully Arrow Video searched and searched for the full uncut version and provided it to us on an amazing ... After the initial opening story setup involving a child named Ed cleaning a rifle for his dad s birthday and accidentally shooting his mother with more precision than a trained sniper, we jump ahead a few years to catch up with the little boy, now a full grown college kid. The movie then proceeds to play out like a 80s sitcom, with a theme song that will drive you utterly insane. Ed, along with a group of friends are heading out to his dad s condo to close it up for the winter and hijinks are going to be had. We re going to see the kids play monopoly and drinking games. They are going to make out and fool around. They are going to run on the beach, whilst the instrumental version of the theme song drives even further into your brain. It s a rather bizarre setup for a slasher film, but in the end, The Mutilator is just that, a slasher film. It keeps the locations small, utilizing the condo effectively, and providing a nice reason why it s difficult to call for help (the condo is housed on an island and the police are across the bridge.) The movie also effectively flips the protagonists around halfway through, which is rarely seen in a slasher ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This just shows that maybe women didn t ever have a specific role in the American Civil War. Sure, they were supposed to be the mothers, the sisters, the wives, and yet so many women went beyond what others wanted them to be. They became fighters. They became soldiers. They became nurses. They became spies. They became smugglers. • 43. Examples Of Machiavellian Characters In The Governor Machiavellian Character Essay: The Governor Brian Blake, also known as The Governor, presented a terror far greater than cannibalistic zombies throughout seasons two and three of the hit show, The Walking Dead. He was psychotic; driven mad by the death of his daughter. Using his position as governor within a small group of survivors and refugees of the zombie apocalypse, he manipulated, terrorized, lied, cheated, many people in order to secure and maintain his position of power. • 44. Analysis Of Albert Camus BookThe Plague Shaver 1 I would rather live my life as if there is a God and die to find out there isn t, than live as if there isn t and to die to find out that there is. Albert Camus, The Fall In Albert Camus novel The Plague, the author employs three main characters the narrator, Tarrou, and Father Paneloux to represent extremist views on religion and science in culture. The narrator, Rieux, most closely resembles Camus own perspective while Tarrou and Father Paneloux represent the radical views of the two opposite sides. Tarrou lives a life strictly reliant on science and throws faith to the void; Father Paneloux being the man of religion has no consideration for the world of science. Rieux often finds himself leaning more towards Tarrou, but with a fuller understanding of Camus philosophy one can surmise that Rieux is not entirely opposed to the faith culture, and thus excluding Camus from a full blown postmodernist view (Brizee Oct, 2017). The character of Father Paneloux is introduced as a stalwart champion of Christian doctrine, (Camus 92) thus leaving the reader with no curiosity about the qualification of this man from a religious point of view. It is this character s challenges and responses to hardship that reveal his loyalty to the faith based world that is so commonly overlooked in Camus novel. The sermons of Father Paneloux are perhaps to be considered the strongest example of his faith in the face of the plague. The nature of the first sermon is blunt and ...
