The Pros And Cons Of Banned Books
In 1982, First Amendment Rights activist Judith King began Banned Books Week in order to bring
banned books to the attention of the American public (Revolvy, 2017, ¶2). A banned book is a piece of
literature that was banned from schools or libraries due to its controversial content. Some of these
controversial topics include racism (seen in Huckleberry Finn), damaging lifestyles (such as drug use,
co habitation without marriage, etc), or presence of witchcraft (seen in Harry Potter). The books with
this content have been banned in order to prevent controversies in the classroom and stop students
from forming their own opinions that could be different from that of their peers. However, controversy
is a very important potential learning ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, the Spanish Inquisition in 1478 drove out all non Catholics in Spain in an attempt to
purify the Spaniards. A modern day example of religious intolerance is in the Middle East. Blasphemy
laws are an example of religious discrimination, as blasphemy in this context is essentially the practice
of any religion other than Islam. According to Huffington Post, These laws... often carry with them a
mandatory death sentence. Allegations of blasphemy are often presented with no evidence, because to
reproduce the evidence would be to reproduce the blasphemy. This is evidence that practicing a
religion other than Islam in the Middle East comes with a large risk that many are unwilling to take,
which is why Christianity only makes up 4% of the entire Middle East (Ben Mei, 2017, ¶1).
Nevertheless, learning about this type of religious discrimination and about religions in general is an
important aspect of a student s life. By learning about other religions from a nonbiased perspective,
students are far less likely to discriminate against religions other than their own and can reduce bias
later on in life. This is perfectly summarized by the Washington Post when it states, The study of
religion from an academic, nondevotional perspective in primary, middle, and secondary school is
critical for decreasing

Code Switching In Education
While working with the HCZ school system I found Hartigan and Du Bois s articles applicable; most
of the staff members had the black middle class toolkit. They were able to code switch with the
students as a means of communication in order to get the students to perform at higher standards. Staff
was able to communicate effectively with students as they created lesson plans they were personally
passionate about, and topics students could relate to. Students were consistently engaged and teachers
were able to create lesson plans that they were passionate about and that the students would latch onto.
HCZ staff used code switching while working with the students in order to prepare them to advance to
college in the future. HCZ has created a model ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
School systems that create classes that actively discuss racial and ethnic identity and history serve as
an empowering dynamic. The documentary Precious Knowledge presented a battle over Ethnic
Studies classes that were offered at Tucson Unified School District (TUSD) in Arizona during 2009.
Divisive issues were not the product of these discussions, but a reluctance of white Americans who
held the social, political, and economic privilege. The Ethnic Studies classes that were offered at
TUSD empowered the Mexican American students in the community by allowing them to learn more
about their history, who they were, and how they fit into the social structure in the U.S. society. The
classes taught the students about the systematic structures within the United States, providing students
with a holistic understanding of the racial and ethnic issues relating to their personal social political
position, as well as others in the sociopolitical system. Courses similar to these are critical for students
from underrepresented backgrounds and whites to engage in at the high school level because they
push both whites and marginalized groups to understand a new perspective from a young

The Effects Of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome On Infants
Professor Sandmire
Bio 440
30 April 2015 The Effects of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome on Infants
Abstract
Fetal alcohol syndrome is caused when women during their pregnancy drink alcohol and cause
developmental problems that can affect the fetus and infant for the rest of his or her life. Fetal alcohol
syndrome can cause facial abnormalities, mental retardation, and a significant decrease in overall
growth of the fetus.1 There are numerous studies about prevalence of fetal alcohol syndrome, and its
effects on physical, neurological, and socioemotional functions of children. Many studies highlight
that the risk of fetal alcohol increases by the amount of alcohol a woman drinks during her pregnancy.
Many studies also support the idea that the more alcohol that is consumed during pregnancy, the
greater the severity of the associated abnormalities that are found in the child. Because there is no cure
for fetal alcohol syndrome, researchers have tried to achieve successful prevention plans by studying
several options that could be implemented. The work that has been done to try and help children who
have fetal alcohol syndrome is extensive but allows for further research.2
Introduction
Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is a disorder that develops in a child when a woman drinks alcohol
during a pregnancy.2 It is usually characterized by many abnormalities like deficient growth, cognitive
dysfunction that usually causes behavioral and mental issues, and a very specific set of facial

The Great Gatsby And Death Of A Salesman
Ambition. It is a vital characteristic required for an individual wanting achieve their goals. Being
ambitious alone is crucial to success as it is the drive that propels one toward it. It is and always will
be a human trait. Perhaps that is why the theme of ambition has been so prevalent in literature. It is the
dominant theme in The Great Gatsby by F.Scott Fitzgerald, William Shakespeare s Macbeth, Death of
a Salesman by Arthur Miller and The Wolf of Wall Street by Jordan Belfort. In this essay, I will
discuss the two ways over ambition can cause an individual s downfall. The first is setting
unattainable goals which we can see in The Great Gatsby and Death of a Salesman. The second is
trying to achieve your goals unethically, seen in Macbeth and in The Wolf of Wall Street . The idea of
ambition and striving for achievement is highly valued by our society today. However, many people
forget that too much of anything can be catastrophic.
Ambition is a theme that many books attempt to touch on, yet very few are truly able to explore it.
F.Scott Fitzgerald s The Great Gatsby published in 1925 is a prime example of a novel that eloquently
presents this theme. The story follows Jay Gatsby, the ambitious self made man. Gatsby s desire is to
be reunited with his lost love, Daisy Buchanan. His ambitious journey toward his green light leads
him from poverty to wealth, but in the end, it is also the cause of his untimely death. Gatsby s over
ambition is shown in his obsession

Othello And Iago Relationship Analysis
One of the major components in Othello, that Shakespeare incorporated throughout the play, is
relationships. These relationships are driven by different motivations and give each individual
something unique. Each character contributes disparate factors to their relationships and change from
scenario to scenario. The presentation of different relationships in Othello represents many of the
underlying motifs of the play. Othello and Iago s relationship, the most prominent relationship,
represents the duality of the play. Othello believes that Iago is helping him and guiding him to be a
better person; however, Iago is using Othello to get his way. Iago is annoyed that he didn t receive
promotion from general Othello ( Relationships in Othello ). Iago is dissatisfied with Othello s choice
because he believes he deserves the promotion. Iago becomes vengeful and devises a plan to enact his
revenge. I follow him to serve my turn upon him (Shakespeare). Iago is shown to only serve Othello
for his own purposes. Othello cannot see through the facade that Iago has put up and follows him
blindly. Othello trusts Iago totally as Iago has a reputation in Venice for being very honest (
Relationships in Othello ). Moreover, Othello calls Iago Honest Iago on multiple occasions in the play.
Othello is shown to believe that Iago is honest and trustworthy by Shakespeare to emphasize the
duality of the relationship between Iago and Othello. Their relationship is a major aspect in

Diversity In A Diverse Society
What is diversity ? Diversity means difference. The fact or quality of being diverse. People s
differences can be many and varied. People are different in the way they look, dress, behave, believe
and worship; where they work; how they live; age, gender, Sexual orientation, Marital status, Politics,
Religion, Disability, Socio economic differences, Family structure, Health, Values, Race, Culture,
National origin, Ethnic group yet also have many similarities. In a diverse society people need to
tolerate and value differences in people so that we can continue to be individuals. Diversity allows
people to contribute to society. The more people are economically active, the more successful is the
economy and this then benefits everyone. Diversity

Research Paper On Palm Oil
Research: Palm oil should we use it? By Annabel Pezzutti. Issue Palm oil is one of the world s most
popular edible vegetable oil. Palm oil is used in most goods available at your local supermarket. This
particular oil is affordable but it comes at an immense cost to our environment. Palm oil has been
connected to many human rights, animal, and environmental violations yet organisations and
companies all over the world persist in using this particular oil in just about everything, in fact this
popular oil is in about half of all products on store shelves. Including products like soap, snacks,
laundry detergent, cosmetics, and even ice cream. Scientific explanation Palm oil is extracted from the
fruit of the oil palm tree, Elaeis guineensis, which prospers in fairly humid tropical climates. Most
Palm oil production occurs in just two countries, Malaysia and Indonesia, but now is spreading all
over the tropics, including Africa. To produce these plantations, deforestation has to occur and this
process results in a loss of biodiversity and a loss of habitat. The Human act of deforestation affects
the water systems too, as rainforests produce 30% of the planet s fresh water. When forestry is
demolished water isn t expelled into the atmosphere and the stability is lost. This leads to a drier
climate and soil because there are no trees to transpire to the ground. why we shouldn t use It Palm oil
too is not sustainably sourced and until there is verification that changes

Community Policing Within The United States Department Of...
Over time the policing community has faced many different changes to be able to keep up with the
new times. The system has adapted many new techniques and a different approach to how they solve
problems. Community policing has taken on a number of definition, but put simply it is a working
partnership with a community that helps make the area a better environment to subside in. The main
goals of community policing is to reduce neighborhood crime, help reduce fear of crime and enhance
the quality of life in the community. The United States Department of Justice has defined community
policing as a philosophy that focuses on crime and social disorder through the delivery of police
services that includes aspects of traditional law enforcement, as well as prevention, problem solving,
community engagement, and partnerships. However, community policing can be looked at as not so
much a strategy, but a philosophy about how things should be done. According to The Unites States
Department of Justice At its core, community oriented policing is based on law enforcement and the
community joining together to identify and address issues of crime and social disorder. With new
advances and community oriented policing, law enforcement is taking steps in the right direction.
Over the course of the semester there have been many instances in which shows that new technology
advances have proven to be nothing but beneficial for law enforcement. In an article written by Ron

Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 as these are both relevant to those covered within lectures. We will begin
with Key Stage 2 and The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien looking for examples as to why this would be
considered Key Stage Two. The same process will be followed with The Silmarillion by the same
author for Key Stage 3. Once the key stages have been confirmed for each piece of literature we can
then begin to compare the texts and determine what elements of each make them unsuitable for
classification into alternative key stages. The results of such a comparison may show some unexpected

It is now listed as Key Stage 2 and for the purposes of this assignment we shall be examining the piece
with this level in mind. It is essentially a simple story of a Hobbit who reluctantly undertakes a great
adventure with a band of dwarves and a wizard to assist in the regaining of treasure lost to a dragon in
times gone by. However, the trials faced during this journey and it s descriptive manner mean that the
book is far from simple at times and it would be fair to assume that this would place it at the higher
end of Key Stage 2 readership, perhaps aged 10 to 11 as it is commonly accepted that children read
books typically written approximately 2 years older than their own age. Using Christopher Booker s
theory of The Seven Basic Plots and taking each of the seven individually we see many examples of

Security to Stop Computer and Internet Crimes
Introduction
The computer and the Internet are important tools used by many people all around the world.
Usually the computer and internet are used for information. In today s society it is being used
for unlawful activities. It is being used to distribute child pornography, money laundering, credit
card fraud; identify theft, and all other types of crimes. Hackers are people who use their computer
skills to harm society. They are responsible for a great deal of these crimes. Information gathered by
hackers are available to anyone with the right type of computer skills. The less security you have on
your information has helped hackers gain access to information and destroyed people s lives,
corporations, and businesses. In this essay I plan to discuss security to stop computer and internet
crime, protecting your computer, and what security methods that have been put into place to prevent
computer crime. I will look into the following areas: What is computer crime? What are the different
types of computer crime? What to do to prevent hacking and protect computers?
Computer Crime
Computer crimes are on the rise 1 in 10 Americans have had to experience some form of attack
on their computer system. If you are connected to the internet in any shape, form, or fashion

Stereotypes Of Dumb Blondes
Blondes do not deserve the reputation society has given them. Contrary to popular belief, the dumb
blonde jokes are nothing but inaccurate and long drawn out. It s no secret that blondes are given a bad
name based on their physical appearance. The media has done a great deal of prolonging this idea into
the brains of millions. Television shows and radio broadcasts are most commonly to blame for much
of these blonde hair stereotypes. These media outlets have especially taken a certain comedic point of
view for portraying the role of blondes in society. People try to define blondes by using derogatory
terms like stupid, moronic, and brainless, but little do they know that hair color has absolutely no
effect on the way a person thinks or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Extensive media sources, as well as literary sources, have been notorious for establishing a certain
stereotype of an individual based on physical appearance. This image centers on ones weight, height,
hair color, and overall physical beauty. It is reported that these particular attributes may affect ones
personal career. No one knows quite why this is the case, but there have been several studies that
involve these works, linking whether there is a direct correlation with these results or if it comes down
to a discriminative nature. Among some of the most interesting studies, are the ones that deal with bias
in the workplace. According to a journal from Labour Economics, Blonde women with no work
experience earn 6% 9% less than their non blonde counterparts (Dechter 2015). The findings show
that blondes can have positive, as well as negative, effects in the workplace. The stronger negative
effect of blonde hair color is commonly apparent in sales (Dechter 2015). This theory has proven to be
true by the sheer presence of customer discrimination, thus showing a lack of blondes in the sales
profession (Dechter 2015). Both negative and positive preferences for blondeness are in line with the
prejudices of the blonde stereotype , which attributes a series of positive and negative characteristics
to young blonde women but not to young blonde men (Dechter 2015). Based on a study in the UK in
2006, scientists analyzed 500 CEOs and discovered that blondes were very underrepresented
compared to men and women with other hair colors (Dickinson 2012). A separate study done in 1996,
concluded that after the subjects displayed headshots in their resume during a job interview, blondes
were greatly undermined (Dickinson 2012). Although all the resumes were identical, the blonde
applicants were rated as less competent

The Impact of Acronyms Use in Facebook on Language
Based on the observations and results that I gathered for 2 weeks, I found out that most of my
participant who uses Facebook daily uses acronym to update their status, provide feedback or
comment, chatting with other users, to give out information or to post personal details through
Facebook. For my research, I found out 5 most common acronyms used by my participants which are
BT, FYI, TQ, BTW, and FB. When asked about this, my sample gives out different opinion and reason
on why they tend to use this acronym when using Facebook.
In my view, they use acronym to shorten the sentence when they update their status in Facebook via
Facebook mobile as well as to reduce the time taken to type the full sentence. When asked about
whether using acronym limited the use and application of languages, they did not think about it at all.
For example, Mr. K from Evidence 4 stated that he does not care about language when he update his
status or chat with his friend in Facebook. For him, he only cares about using correct form of language
when he was in a formal environment, as an example, speaking to his English lecturer.
Moving on, from the findings or results that I have gathered, I place my focus on only 5 acronyms in
order to narrow my observation. However, I will discuss the 5 acronyms more in the view of semantic.
Semantically, all five acronyms mentioned in my research have different meaning. As I set my
observation throughout the 2 weeks period of time, I place my studies of

Lighting and Themes in 127 Hours
There are plenty of films based on a true story and various ways to use lighting as a part of Mise en
Scéne to make all of those films seem more realistic or in sometimes unrealistic whichever is the
director s and cinematographer s take on the story. Danny Boyle s take on Aron Ralston s true story of
cutting his arm off to live has been to make it as realistic as it possibly can be. The film was shot on
and off set, mostly in constructed set of the canyon where Aron Ralston, portrayed by James Franco,
was trapped with his arm pinned between a large boulder and the canyon wall. The scene of which
lighting and themes this essay will discuss about starts from the point where James Franco s character
has just freed himself and starts running ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Josef von Sternberg has said that the proper use of light can embellish and dramatize every object
(Josef von Sternberg as quoted in Bordwell 2010, p. 131). As much as the lighting in this scene is used
to state Franco s character s state of mind it is also used to dramatize the scene and character s
struggle. This applies throughout the whole film and not just in this particular scene. Lighting
intensifies Franco s character s facial expressions as well as during his run through the canyon the
lighting is darkened and more shadowy most of the time to create realistic condition but it also adds
the feeling of length to the run.
In the part of the scene where the character is running through the canyon the lighting changes
constantly between darker and lighter. It is darker when he struggles and lighter on the easier parts of
the distance between his trap and freedom.
In the shots that are taken in the canyon the light is colder than in the ones that are taken outside. The
fill light is used to soften the contrast of shadows on characters face while he is in the canyon
(Pramaggiore and Wallis 2011, p. 111). For the first half of the scene, placed in the canyon, light is
constantly coming from above as sunlight between the cracks of the earth to the canyon. Franco s
character also keeps looking up to the sunlight after he has been freed from his trap. The character has
done that many times before in the film as desperately hoping to be free and now he

Childhood Bulimia Nervosa
Background: Eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating are life threatening
conditions that affect a person s emotional and physical health. Anorexia nervosa is the intense fear of
gaining weight and having an abnormally low body weight. Individuals restrict the amount of food
they consume. Bulimia Nervosa is eating large amounts of food and getting rid of the extra calories by
force vomiting or misusing laxatives. Abuse during childhood has long been hypothesized to be a risk
factor for the development of eating disorders (Harlow, Rayworth, and Wise, 2004). The purpose of

Sustainability: Consumer Perceptions and Marketing Strategies
Seonaidh McDonald1* and Caroline J. Oates2 1 Aberdeen Business School, The Robert Gordon

ABSTRACT Studies of green consumer behaviour, in particular purchasing and disposal, have largely
focused on demographics and/or socio demographics, with mixed and frequently contradictory results.

These issues have been tackled differently in each area of literature. In the waste management
literature there has been a move away from trying to describe the recycler by means of their attitudes
and towards identifying them in terms of concrete actions. In the marketing literature, a different
approach has been taken. Here, one response to these problems is to focus on consumers perceptions
of green issues, rather than their identifiable characteristics. This is a key point, which, if understood,
would allow marketers to take a different perspective on segmentation, based less on the mass market
approach of demographics and more on consumer beliefs. One example of such an approach is a study
by Straughan and Roberts (1999), who focused on perceived consumer effectiveness (PCE) as an
insight into ecologically conscious consumer behaviour (ECCB). PCE was found by Straughan and
Roberts to be a key indicator in explaining ECCB. The researchers emphasize that even if respondents
are concerned about the environment, they are unlikely to be proactive unless they have the belief that
individuals can be effective. Consumers may believe they are informed about the

effectiveness of virtual schooling with regards to standardized testing. In my experience, students who
exclusively learn through virtual schools do not perform as well on state mandated high stakes tests as
their face to face peers. The dependent variable for this study would be the test scores. Independent

Effects Of Depression On High Income Countries
Depression, in general, affects more than 340 million people around the world and is reported to be
the highest cause of disability in high income countries (Demissie). 15% to 85% of mothers can
experience postpartum blues with postpartum depression rates between 11.7% and 20.4% in the
United States alone (Ersek). This depression can occur at anytime from post delivery up to one year
(Ersek). Giving birth comes with a wide variety of changes including physical, emotion and social.
There are very high levels of sex hormones in circulation which cause increased ligament, joint and
muscle laxity (Norman). Many women lose their social contacts due to upcoming life changes, must
take time off work, and must stop previous hobbies (Norman). Relationship factors, hormone changes,
sleep deprivation and support deeply effect a woman s self esteem and confidence during and after
pregnancy (Norman). [Daley et al.] states that symptoms of postpartum depression include decreased
mood, fatigue, anxiety, thoughts of self harm and poor mother infant interactions(change wording).
Women with post partum depression have been reported to be at an increased risk for substance abuse,
are more likely to miss gynecological and child health appointments, are more non compliant with
medical recommendations and are less likely to use preventative safety items like car seats and outlet
covers (Ersek). Researchers state that women with postpartum depression are less likely to breastfeed

midwives both have a standard that they all need to be aware of and know when working with women
in antenatal, birth and post natal. They need to both be able to help assist the women in choosing a
mode of care that is suitable for her needs. (Ranzcog.edu.au, 2011) Obstetric care is defined by the

Is Golf A Sport Essay
People keep wondering if golf is a sport, and the answer is yes. This is true for three reasons.Pro golfers
are considered athletes by many people, physical training helps with a golfers performance, and golf
requires coordinated muscle use.All these things make a golfer an athlete, and an athlete is someone
who plays some sort of sport so that technically makes golf a sport. Now lets get into some detail to
why golf should be considered a real sport.
The first reason why golf should be considered a sport is because many people call pro golfers
athletes. An example of this would be, The associated press has named a golfer as its female athlete of
the year 24 times ( https://golf.procon.org/ ).If she plays golf and has been named female athlete of the
year, then that makes her an athlete which makes golf a real sport.Another example from them is,
Golfer Tiger Woods is the richest athlete in history and was the first athlete to surpass 1 billion dollars

change largely impactful on the English language it poses no threat and should not be considered as

Although there is much criticism directed towards millennials and younger generations when it comes
to texting, Crystals makes it clear that text like abbreviations have been used in English for centuries.
Acronyms such as LOL, LOML, BRB (laugh out loud, love of my life, be right back) can be dated
back to 1618 at the introduction of the term IOU in place of I owe you . The history of abbreviations
can be dated back to Anglo Saxon tribes. Humphrys argument poses that texting poses a threat to
literacy in our society, Crystal refutes this by giving examples of how word alterations and
abbreviations similar to that of texting have been used for centuries by those with an adequate
understanding of language for sake of brevity and creativity. In addition, Eric Partridge published a
Dictionary of Abbreviations in 1942. Containing many text like examples, such as agn again , mth
mouth , and gd good . Symbols and number in writing have been used for a long while as well. There
are called rebuses and they have been used since the middle centuries to create puzzles, surnames, or
conventional representation. Not only is the use of these abbreviations that we see in texting
something as old as the English language itself, the criticism associated with is is also something that
is as equally ancient. Crystal (2008) explains:
English has had abbreviated words ever since it began to be written down. Words such as exam, vet,

Ernest Hemingway and Masculinity Essay
Ernest Hemingway and Masculinity
Ernest Hemingway, viewed as an American hero of his time, wrote novels that enrich the minds of his
readers, creating a lasting image that goes far beyond the actual content of the story. But while reading
Hemingway, I learned that his style was far from complex. Through pre meditated sentence structure,
he creates a rhythm that parallels the action in the story. He wants the sentences themselves to be easy
to understand, so the reader can use more energy focusing on the symbolism Hemingway s stories
create. He skillfully places symbols and metaphors throughout his novels. In his own writing,
Hemingway doesn t explain in detail his metaphors. Rather, he forces the reader to discover the ...

He compares sexually ability as a part of the masculine man. By having his main character Jake
Barnes impotent, Hemingway depicts a loss of masculinity that is common throughout his novels. He
also contrasts men and women who hold onto their masculinity and men who lose it. Through his
metaphors Hemingway uses empathy to draw the reader closer to the characters as they feel for their
suffering.
War, usually thought of as a masculine fight for glory, is reversed in Hemingway s writings. Instead of
men showing their masculinity, he portrays a war that takes away men s masculinity through injuries
that deprive them the rest of their lives.
Truly, A Farewell to Arms and For Whom the Bell Tolls force the reader to question the need for
sacrificing a man s life for a war. Is war worth dying over? The reader should note Robert Jordan s
suicide mission in trying to make this decision for himself. Jordan understood that there was little
hope of survival, and he cringed at the thought of not getting to live out his life with his new love
Maria. But in the end, he takes the heroes path and blows up the bridge, which costs him his life.
Not only did Jordan s efforts go in vain, since the bridge was far behind enemy lines and didn t do
much damage to the movement of the Fascists, but Jordan s allies, the Spanish Republic, never made
the offensive. The tragic death of Jordan leaves the reader wondering,

Persuasive Essay On Prohibition Of Drugs
Laws that prohibit the possession and use of street drugs are important as their aim is to protect the
user, those around them, and society in general from undue harm. There has been a great push during
the last 10 years to legalize marijuana and decriminalize other drugs such as cocaine and heroin on the
basis that the recreational user, and even the hard core addict, may not be causing significant harm to
anyone, beyond their own personal health. In this sense, drug use is viewed as a personal choice and
drug laws trample on personal freedoms without sufficient reason. Additionally, minorities are found
to be arrested and convicted of drug crimes at disproportionate rates when compared to the
demographics of those who use illegal drugs, which some see these type of laws as a tool of legal
oppression, instead of a valid punitive function. Still, there remains sufficient reasons to maintain laws
against the possession and use of controlled substances, such as marijuana, cocaine, and heroin;
though there is a compelling argument for the lessening of the amount punishment of the majority of
users that are caught with small amounts of street drugs. This paper seeks to put forward valid reasons
for the continued prohibition of drugs, while also making a case for the softening of incarceration
policies.
Some argue that the use of mind or mood altering substances is a matter of personal expression. They
assume the philosophical stance that what one individual finds enlightening as a means of helping
them to reach their best personal self, may be a hindrance to others (Mill, 2014). They view the
consumption of a substance as a personal freedom, in their pursuit to find fulfillment and contentment
in life. The argument that drug use is a personal choice has some merit, but loses traction when it is
compared to the reasons societies were formed, how they function, and the benefits the individual
obtains from membership. A society is where individuals and groups come together to establish rules,
accomplish common goals, and provide for the public welfare, while also allowing space for the
pursuit of personal interests (Stone, 2002). Healthy and productive communities allow the promotion
of self interest, but cannot do

Lord Of Flies Book Vs Lord Of The Flies
The Inner Beast Emerges
The beast that lies inside of us all shows what it can do when it has a chance too.
By Daniel Frankel
The Lord of the Flies is a 250 page novel written by Sir William Golding. It was first published in
1954 and since then, has become a worldwide success. A quote from Golding was The right
impression is the one that rises to the reader the first time he reads the book , This was perfectly suited
for his book, as his book was a best seller. The movie based on the novel Lord of the Flies was first
made in 1963 in black and white, then made again in colour in 1990 by Harry Hook. The movie has
many deviations from the book however the storyline is basically the same and proved a success by
grossing just under $14 million in the box office, making it a major film for the time period. Because
this novel was such a success schools all around are still studying it in senior English.
The Lord of the flies novel, starts at a reasonable pace and doesn t let the reader lose interest. Sir
William Golding writes very descriptively and creates the images very clearly. For example his hair

a group of British school boys are stranded on an uninhabited island. Trying to maintain structure, the
boys elect Ralph to be the leader, a position, Ralph, feels a duty as the eldest to fulfil. However, one of

Histone Code Hypothesis
The replacement of somatic histones with testis specific variants in early haploid germ cells is
undoubtedly an essential step for promoting chromatin remodeling during spermiogenesis, and it is
believed to involve the histone code. The histone code hypothesis proposes that combinations of
histone modification could serve as specific signals that recruit protein domains to alter chromatin
structure to either promote or suppress gene transcription (Turner, 2002). There is evidence for the
involvement of the histone code in chromatin remodeling as stage specific histone modifications have
been reported to occur during spermiogenesis, namely histone H4 acetylation, histone H3 methylation
and phosphorylation, and histone H2A ubiquitination (Song ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Protamines are 50 amino acid long, cysteine and arginine rich proteins that bind tightly to the negative
DNA backbone. As with TPs, PRMs are transcribed in round spermatids and only appear in late
spermiogenesis to complete chromatin condensation. Their positive charge stabilizes the chromatin as
it abolishes electrostatic repulsion between proximal chromatin strands, forming toroids loops (Cho et
al., 2003). Further chromatin compaction occurs during epididymal transit during which PRMs form
disulfide bridges between cysteine residues to form a semi crystalline chromatin (Carrell et al., 2007).
Two PRMs have been identified, PRM1 and PRM2, both of which are present in human and mouse
germ cells, but only PRM1 exists in the rat. There are two critical differences dissociate the two
protamines, both structurally and functionally. First, PRM2 binds longer stretches of DNA, which
renders the chromatin less compacted. Second, PRM2 coordinates one zinc atom, which in the case of
humans makes zinc deficiency an important issue (Balhorn, 2007). However, this difference does not
make one PRM more essential than the other. In fact, the PRMs must be present in equal ratio, as a
change in this ratio leads to diminished semen quality and low fertility potential in humans (Balhorn,
2007). Xenobiotics are chemicals that an organism is exposed to that are

The Shift From Modernity To Postmodernity
Modernity
Describe the main features of the shift from modernity to postmodernity
Post modernity or post modernism as coined during the counter culture era of the 1960s and 70s has
been highly contestant, ever since it was first used describe the death of modern architecture and art
during the same period. It is this debate of being in a state of modernity or post modernity that will
lead me to describe the shifts in cultural, economic and political views and values that demonstrates a
shift in values from modern to post modern views sociy. This shift to post modernity has been highly
influenced through the works of postmodern artists and architects and academics such as Focult
(Venn, C., Featherstone, M. 2006), Burroughs, Barthelme, Rauschenberg and Cage (Clarke, S. 2006),
who all describe modernity being an exhausted idea, due to the shift of values changing society to a
period of post modernity.
In this essay I will argue that we are now living in a new age of post modernity by describing and
explaining the transition of modernity to post modernity by analysing the social dimensions that
modernity has shifted from to postmodernity. I will also look at the main features of both modernity
and postmodernity and explore their features to draw the conclusion that postmodernity is not a new
era but a new social movement of different views and perspectives.

The Incident Of The Fort Hood Shooting
On November 5, 2009, the public gained knowledge about an incident that took place at an U.S. Army
installation. Maj. Nidal Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, fatally shot 13 people and injured more than 30
others. He was facing a deployment to one of the many war zones overseas (McFadden, 2009). There
are many reports about this incident and what actually took place. From what I ve gathered, Hasan
went into a processing center where soldiers go before and after they come back from deployment.
After Hasan s shooting rampage, he was finally stopped when Army Military Police (MP) officers
shot him a total of four times. He is now paralyzed from the waist down due to the shooting. The Fort
Hood shooting marked the worst shooting ever to take place on a military installation state side, to
record. There was almost no structural damage because he used hand guns instead of bombs, or what
we call weapons of mass destruction.
This attack is classified as a terrorist attack simply because of what the intention was at the beginning.
In my own words, terrorist(s) is someone or groups that have different beliefs and want to force their
belief onto you by any means necessary, which may include killing if one doesn t comply. The local,
state, and federal, as well as military, officers communicated well with each other and responded to
the shooting in record breaking time. All of the injured personnel were transported to four different
hospitals, to include the base hospital as well.

Human are eligible to be perfect . Human makes mistakes in life as they are not angel and unwillingly

Statutory Rape And The Age Of Consent
According to the California Law, statutory rape is having sexual relations with a child or minor
anyone who is below the age of consent. Committing this crime can result in imprisonment and cause
the defendant to be charged with a felony even if they weren t previously aware of the age of the
victim at the time in which the act was done. When a statutory rape case is being evaluated, the victim
must be under the age of 18 or under the age of consent and the one presenting the case must have
proof that sexual intercourse occurred. The reason why this law was put into play was because in the
eyes of the government it is believed that unless one is over the age of consent, they are physically and
mentally incapable of giving consent to any sexual activities. Although the amendment states that all
men are created equal, there is still an existing gender bias favoring women when it comes down to
who commits the crime.
Statutory Rape is a very foggy law when it comes to the specifics and the crime can still be committed
even if both people engaging in sexual acts are below the age of consent as well. Statutory rape is a
state sex crime that can be charged as a felony or misdemeanor offense and may be punishable by
incarceration, fine, probation, and/or registry as a sex offender, depending on the state and
circumstances of the incident (Findlaw,1). 17 year old Alan Jepsen from Sheboygan, Wisconsin was at

The Ways Dickens Creates Mystery and Suspense in The...
Describe the ways Dickens creates mystery and suspense in The
Signalman
The Signalman by Charles Dickens, also known as No1 Branchline , is part of the collection of short
railway stories that are included in
Mugby Junctions , published in 1866. These stories appear to have been written post the tragic
Staplehurst, Kent train crash, in which
Dickens was involved, but escaped unhurt. Following the accident,
Dickens suffered from what we would call today, Post Traumatic Stress
Disorder. This may have contributed to the reflective and supernatural nature of The Signalman .
The story of The Signalman is a mysterious tale about a character that stumbles upon an isolated train

Questions are raised about the recipient s identity~ is he the signalman?
Following the first line, he looks around to face the tunnel~ looked down the line . A natural response
to …below there would be to glance upwards. Again Dickens constitutes the inexplicable, building up
the tension and suspense.
The actions of the signalman are nondescript, his body language is unusual, and provokes the narrator
to heed that there was something remarkable in his manner . His figure is described as foreshortened
and shadowed which pronounces as sinister and uncanny. Whilst the narrator looks down on the steep
cutting he is steeped in the glow of an angry sunset , giving the influence that he is unable to see
things clearly? The angry sunset is an example of personification that
Dickens relates. However, it also evokes dispute about the narrator s state of mind. In a sunset he sees
anger~ is this normal? He is indeed of a petulant nature.
Almost immediately the landscape evolves into jeopardy as a vague vibration arouses and quickly
erupts into a violent pulsation and an oncoming rush . These effective adjectives that Dickens uses
assist the tension of the narrative. He also sustains mystery by withholding vital information involving
the sensations and what is causing them. An aspect of uncertainty arises. A significant lexical set of
speed is easily detected, for example, rapid , rush ,
skimming that convey peril and a feeling

International Law
The Role of an Individual in International Law
Student`s name:
Institution of Learning:
The Role of an Individual in International Law At a glance, one may assume that individuals do not
play a significant role in international law. International law may seem too broad to encompass
individuals in any society. This is because that international law has no jurisdiction. It applies
regardless of the local jurisdiction sometimes even overriding local legislation. Courts may use
international law to pass judgement on tricky cases. However, individuals play a significant role in
international law. International law focuses mainly on the individual. It ensures that individuals get
justice mostly in situations when the national ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is because some parties such as women had limited rights compared to other citizens of the same
country. One of the rights that young sovereign nations denied women in their territory is suffrage.
However, parties that had limited rights gradually gained their rights albeit after undergoing long
durations of painful struggle.[2] However, the individual still played a significant part in international
law even before the formation of the United Nations. Even before the formation of the United Nations,
there was a humanitarian law that sought to reduce the effects of war on civilians and combatants.
Humanitarian law also had rules that dictated how states should treat aliens by granting them
protection. However, the individual was usually associated with the state of residence and not
regarded as an autonomous entity in international law. During the Second World War, the link between
sovereignty, citizenship and rights that citizens of sovereign states had was apparent. Sovereign states
did not always protect the rights of their citizens, as they did not prevent other nations from inflicting
atrocities on some of their citizens. However, the Second World War made protection of human rights
a core issue of various sovereign states and the international community. The Second World War led to
the formation of many sovereign states.[3] As more and more states became sovereign, the

of reefs that are just waiting to be explored. Just a short walk away is the Casa area which offers Seal
Rock where you can see some of the best wildlife in the area such as sea lions and seals as they frolic

Family Dynamics Paper
Family Roles and Dynamics Family roles and dynamics play a critical role in behavior problems, such
as addiction. Family communication and functioning is important to understand when working with an
addict and their family. By looking at a family s dynamics and interactions, counselors can begin to
understand why the client is behaving in such ways (Van Wormer Davis, 2013). The counselors can
identify a client s problem area by examining the family interactions with each other (Van Wormer
Davis, 2013). Each family will consist of different communication styles, functioning, and conflict
resolution (Epstein, Hill, Bailey, Hawkins, 2013). When counselors examine the family as a whole,
they are able to understand problems arise as they do. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The counselor will observe each family member, and decide which role they actively play in (Van
Wormer Davis, 2013). For example, are there members in the family who can be classified as
enablers? Does the enabler family member contribute to the client s addiction without realizing it? The
counselor can help clients and family members identify the roles they play and how it affects each
other (Van Wormer Davis, 2013). Role playing can be a helpful technique to not only the client, but
also the family as a whole (Van Wormer Davis, 2013). Unique Characteristics When family members
are a part of an individual s treatment process, it can be an essential factor. One of the unique
characteristics of having families partake in addiction treatment is the resiliency (Van Wormer Davis,
2013). Every family member can benefit from treatment. Family members can work on
communication skills, underlying emotions, and acceptance (Van Wormer Davis, 2013). The family as
a whole can build resiliency and overcome the disease of addiction. Ethical

Relationship Between Antthropometrics And Ergonomics
Human Factors, Anthropometrics, Ergonomics and
Their Relationship with Design
There are few situations in which a product is designed specifically for a single individual. For
example, luxury items that are custom built for people with a great deal of money. Moreover, there a
number of individuals who rely on these luxury custom built items due to disabilities and unique
physical characteristics. However, the majority of the products and spaces today are designed with the
whole population in mind. These products must be designed to be adequate for a population of users.
Most of the time with adjustability or a range of heights and sizing.

This information can contribute to the design and evaluation of tasks, jobs, spaces, and environments
to make them the most compatible with the limitations, disabilities, and needs of the general
population.
In conclusion, Anthropometrics is the study of the sizes of people in relation to products and spaces
manufactured. Human Factors or Ergonomics is the relationship between people and the products in
which they use. Moreover, Anthropometric data is used to help designers and design products meet
ergonomic needs.
Although Anthropometrics and Ergonomics are primarily scientific fields, designers should be aware
of these human factors to ensure their product and spaces are safe and socially responsible. These
studies allow designers to accommodate the vast majority of the population so as many people as
possible can use and interact with the product or space. Good designers observe these qualities first
because no one wants to use or own a product that carries out a task poorly or dangerously. In
conclusion, designers should always rely on and research anthropometric and ergonomic data when
designing functional spaces and

Statement Of Purpose For A Robot
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
Motion Engaged , as it displayed, the robot turned around and moved towards the fourteen year old,
whose fathomless curiosity waited for answers to a thousand questions regarding the mysterious
object. Just one thought kept coming back to me which one of them was a miracle, the components
that made the robot alive, or the man who knew exactly what to do with them. Both, I finally
concluded. If god has blessed us with semiconductors, it is man, who in his conquest for progress has
discovered in these materials the means of putting his dreams to shape.
My interest in VLSI is deep rooted. Even before I began studying it as a Science I remember reading
about the gadgets in magazines. From the invention of the first silicon transistor to the microchip
invented by Texas Instruments, from the first vacuum tubes and integrated circuits, to the Intel
microprocessor and the present day C.P.U. every event has been a milestone which I have not only
read about but also savoured for how it has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was the time to water the seeds of VLSI that were sown earlier. In 2010, I completed my schooling
from Ahlcon International School, Delhi. This marked the culmination of a 12 year period of brilliant
schooling and I must admit that much of what I have gone on to do and achieve is the result of those
years. In August 2011, I enrolled for a 4 year Bachelor s Program at Jaypee Institute of Information
Technology, Noida and opted for Electronics and Communication as my Major. I have spent the past
few years in an atmosphere of proactive and vibrant academics. Amidst students drawn from every
corner of India and a faculty of highly qualified and widely travelled mentors, I have flowered. I
remember my teacher, Professor Satyendra Kumar, walk into the first class of Basic Electronic
Devices and Circuits and write on the board The Next Big Thing Is Really Small. And I knew I was in

  • 2. The Pros And Cons Of Banned Books In 1982, First Amendment Rights activist Judith King began Banned Books Week in order to bring banned books to the attention of the American public (Revolvy, 2017, ¶2). A banned book is a piece of literature that was banned from schools or libraries due to its controversial content. Some of these controversial topics include racism (seen in Huckleberry Finn), damaging lifestyles (such as drug use, co habitation without marriage, etc), or presence of witchcraft (seen in Harry Potter). The books with this content have been banned in order to prevent controversies in the classroom and stop students from forming their own opinions that could be different from that of their peers. However, controversy is a very important potential learning ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, the Spanish Inquisition in 1478 drove out all non Catholics in Spain in an attempt to purify the Spaniards. A modern day example of religious intolerance is in the Middle East. Blasphemy laws are an example of religious discrimination, as blasphemy in this context is essentially the practice of any religion other than Islam. According to Huffington Post, These laws... often carry with them a mandatory death sentence. Allegations of blasphemy are often presented with no evidence, because to reproduce the evidence would be to reproduce the blasphemy. This is evidence that practicing a religion other than Islam in the Middle East comes with a large risk that many are unwilling to take, which is why Christianity only makes up 4% of the entire Middle East (Ben Mei, 2017, ¶1). Nevertheless, learning about this type of religious discrimination and about religions in general is an important aspect of a student s life. By learning about other religions from a nonbiased perspective, students are far less likely to discriminate against religions other than their own and can reduce bias later on in life. This is perfectly summarized by the Washington Post when it states, The study of religion from an academic, nondevotional perspective in primary, middle, and secondary school is critical for decreasing ... Staff was able to communicate effectively with students as they created lesson plans they were personally passionate about, and topics students could relate to. School systems that create classes that actively discuss racial and ethnic identity and history serve as an empowering dynamic. The documentary Precious Knowledge presented a battle over Ethnic Studies classes that were offered at Tucson Unified School District (TUSD) in Arizona during 2009. Divisive issues were not the product of these discussions, but a reluctance of white Americans who held the social, political, and economic privilege. The Ethnic Studies classes that were offered at TUSD empowered the Mexican American students in the community by allowing them to learn more about their history, who they were, and how they fit into the social structure in the U.S. society. The classes taught the students about the systematic structures within the United States, providing students with a holistic understanding of the racial and ethnic issues relating to their personal social political position, as well as others in the sociopolitical system. Courses similar to these are critical for students from underrepresented backgrounds and whites to engage in at the high school level because they push both whites and marginalized groups to understand a new perspective from a young ... • 4. The Effects Of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome On Infants Professor Sandmire Bio 440 30 April 2015 The Effects of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome on Infants Abstract Fetal alcohol syndrome is caused when women during their pregnancy drink alcohol and cause developmental problems that can affect the fetus and infant for the rest of his or her life. Fetal alcohol syndrome can cause facial abnormalities, mental retardation, and a significant decrease in overall growth of the fetus.1 There are numerous studies about prevalence of fetal alcohol syndrome, and its effects on physical, neurological, and socioemotional functions of children. Many studies highlight that the risk of fetal alcohol increases by the amount of alcohol a woman drinks during her pregnancy. Many studies also support the idea that the more alcohol that is consumed during pregnancy, the greater the severity of the associated abnormalities that are found in the child. Because there is no cure for fetal alcohol syndrome, researchers have tried to achieve successful prevention plans by studying several options that could be implemented. The work that has been done to try and help children who have fetal alcohol syndrome is extensive but allows for further research.2 Introduction Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is a disorder that develops in a child when a woman drinks alcohol during a pregnancy.2 It is usually characterized by many abnormalities like deficient growth, cognitive dysfunction that usually causes behavioral and mental issues, and a very specific set of facial ... • 5. The Great Gatsby And Death Of A Salesman Ambition. It is a vital characteristic required for an individual wanting achieve their goals. Being ambitious alone is crucial to success as it is the drive that propels one toward it. It is and always will be a human trait. Perhaps that is why the theme of ambition has been so prevalent in literature. It is the dominant theme in The Great Gatsby by F.Scott Fitzgerald, William Shakespeare s Macbeth, Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller and The Wolf of Wall Street by Jordan Belfort. In this essay, I will discuss the two ways over ambition can cause an individual s downfall. The first is setting unattainable goals which we can see in The Great Gatsby and Death of a Salesman. The second is trying to achieve your goals unethically, seen in Macbeth and in The Wolf of Wall Street . The idea of ambition and striving for achievement is highly valued by our society today. However, many people forget that too much of anything can be catastrophic. Ambition is a theme that many books attempt to touch on, yet very few are truly able to explore it. F.Scott Fitzgerald s The Great Gatsby published in 1925 is a prime example of a novel that eloquently presents this theme. The story follows Jay Gatsby, the ambitious self made man. Gatsby s desire is to be reunited with his lost love, Daisy Buchanan. His ambitious journey toward his green light leads him from poverty to wealth, but in the end, it is also the cause of his untimely death. Gatsby s over ambition is shown in his obsession ... • 6. Othello And Iago Relationship Analysis One of the major components in Othello, that Shakespeare incorporated throughout the play, is relationships. These relationships are driven by different motivations and give each individual something unique. Each character contributes disparate factors to their relationships and change from scenario to scenario. The presentation of different relationships in Othello represents many of the underlying motifs of the play. Othello and Iago s relationship, the most prominent relationship, represents the duality of the play. Othello believes that Iago is helping him and guiding him to be a better person; however, Iago is using Othello to get his way. Iago is annoyed that he didn t receive promotion from general Othello ( Relationships in Othello ). Iago is dissatisfied with Othello s choice because he believes he deserves the promotion. Iago becomes vengeful and devises a plan to enact his revenge. I follow him to serve my turn upon him (Shakespeare). Iago is shown to only serve Othello for his own purposes. Othello cannot see through the facade that Iago has put up and follows him blindly. Othello trusts Iago totally as Iago has a reputation in Venice for being very honest ( Relationships in Othello ). Moreover, Othello calls Iago Honest Iago on multiple occasions in the play. Othello is shown to believe that Iago is honest and trustworthy by Shakespeare to emphasize the duality of the relationship between Iago and Othello. Their relationship is a major aspect in ... • 8. Research Paper On Palm Oil Research: Palm oil should we use it? By Annabel Pezzutti. Issue Palm oil is one of the world s most popular edible vegetable oil. Palm oil is used in most goods available at your local supermarket. This particular oil is affordable but it comes at an immense cost to our environment. Palm oil has been connected to many human rights, animal, and environmental violations yet organisations and companies all over the world persist in using this particular oil in just about everything, in fact this popular oil is in about half of all products on store shelves. Including products like soap, snacks, laundry detergent, cosmetics, and even ice cream. Scientific explanation Palm oil is extracted from the fruit of the oil palm tree, Elaeis guineensis, which prospers in fairly humid tropical climates. Most Palm oil production occurs in just two countries, Malaysia and Indonesia, but now is spreading all over the tropics, including Africa. To produce these plantations, deforestation has to occur and this process results in a loss of biodiversity and a loss of habitat. The Human act of deforestation affects the water systems too, as rainforests produce 30% of the planet s fresh water. When forestry is demolished water isn t expelled into the atmosphere and the stability is lost. This leads to a drier climate and soil because there are no trees to transpire to the ground. why we shouldn t use It Palm oil too is not sustainably sourced and until there is verification that changes ... The system has adapted many new techniques and a different approach to how they solve problems. Community policing has taken on a number of definition, but put simply it is a working partnership with a community that helps make the area a better environment to subside in. The main goals of community policing is to reduce neighborhood crime, help reduce fear of crime and enhance the quality of life in the community. The United States Department of Justice has defined community policing as a philosophy that focuses on crime and social disorder through the delivery of police services that includes aspects of traditional law enforcement, as well as prevention, problem solving, community engagement, and partnerships. However, community policing can be looked at as not so much a strategy, but a philosophy about how things should be done. According to The Unites States Department of Justice At its core, community oriented policing is based on law enforcement and the community joining together to identify and address issues of crime and social disorder. With new advances and community oriented policing, law enforcement is taking steps in the right direction. However, the trials faced during this journey and it s descriptive manner mean that the book is far from simple at times and it would be fair to assume that this would place it at the higher end of Key Stage 2 readership, perhaps aged 10 to 11 as it is commonly accepted that children read books typically written approximately 2 years older than their own age. It s no secret that blondes are given a bad name based on their physical appearance. The media has done a great deal of prolonging this idea into the brains of millions. Television shows and radio broadcasts are most commonly to blame for much of these blonde hair stereotypes. These media outlets have especially taken a certain comedic point of view for portraying the role of blondes in society. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Extensive media sources, as well as literary sources, have been notorious for establishing a certain stereotype of an individual based on physical appearance. This image centers on ones weight, height, hair color, and overall physical beauty. It is reported that these particular attributes may affect ones personal career. No one knows quite why this is the case, but there have been several studies that involve these works, linking whether there is a direct correlation with these results or if it comes down to a discriminative nature. Among some of the most interesting studies, are the ones that deal with bias in the workplace. According to a journal from Labour Economics, Blonde women with no work experience earn 6% 9% less than their non blonde counterparts (Dechter 2015). The findings show that blondes can have positive, as well as negative, effects in the workplace. The stronger negative effect of blonde hair color is commonly apparent in sales (Dechter 2015). This theory has proven to be true by the sheer presence of customer discrimination, thus showing a lack of blondes in the sales profession (Dechter 2015). Both negative and positive preferences for blondeness are in line with the prejudices of the blonde stereotype , which attributes a series of positive and negative characteristics to young blonde women but not to young blonde men (Dechter 2015). Based on a study in the UK in 2006, scientists analyzed 500 CEOs and discovered that blondes were very underrepresented compared to men and women with other hair colors (Dickinson 2012). A separate study done in 1996, concluded that after the subjects displayed headshots in their resume during a job interview, blondes were greatly undermined (Dickinson 2012). For my research, I found out 5 most common acronyms used by my participants which are BT, FYI, TQ, BTW, and FB. When asked about this, my sample gives out different opinion and reason on why they tend to use this acronym when using Facebook. In my view, they use acronym to shorten the sentence when they update their status in Facebook via Facebook mobile as well as to reduce the time taken to type the full sentence. When asked about whether using acronym limited the use and application of languages, they did not think about it at all. For example, Mr. K from Evidence 4 stated that he does not care about language when he update his status or chat with his friend in Facebook. For him, he only cares about using correct form of language when he was in a formal environment, as an example, speaking to his English lecturer. Lighting and Themes in 127 Hours There are plenty of films based on a true story and various ways to use lighting as a part of Mise en Scéne to make all of those films seem more realistic or in sometimes unrealistic whichever is the director s and cinematographer s take on the story. Danny Boyle s take on Aron Ralston s true story of cutting his arm off to live has been to make it as realistic as it possibly can be. The film was shot on and off set, mostly in constructed set of the canyon where Aron Ralston, portrayed by James Franco, was trapped with his arm pinned between a large boulder and the canyon wall. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Josef von Sternberg has said that the proper use of light can embellish and dramatize every object (Josef von Sternberg as quoted in Bordwell 2010, p. 131). As much as the lighting in this scene is used to state Franco s character s state of mind it is also used to dramatize the scene and character s struggle. This applies throughout the whole film and not just in this particular scene. Lighting intensifies Franco s character s facial expressions as well as during his run through the canyon the lighting is darkened and more shadowy most of the time to create realistic condition but it also adds the feeling of length to the run. In the part of the scene where the character is running through the canyon the lighting changes constantly between darker and lighter. It is darker when he struggles and lighter on the easier parts of the distance between his trap and freedom. In the shots that are taken in the canyon the light is colder than in the ones that are taken outside. The fill light is used to soften the contrast of shadows on characters face while he is in the canyon (Pramaggiore and Wallis 2011, p. 111). For the first half of the scene, placed in the canyon, light is constantly coming from above as sunlight between the cracks of the earth to the canyon. Women with histories of anorexia or bulimia and those who met the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition, reported some childhood abuse. Sexual abuse without physical abuse was not associated with eating disorders, whereas physical abuse without sexual abuse was still associated with a 2 fold increased risk of eating disorders. In the waste management literature there has been a move away from trying to describe the recycler by means of their attitudes and towards identifying them in terms of concrete actions. In the marketing literature, a different approach has been taken. Here, one response to these problems is to focus on consumers perceptions of green issues, rather than their identifiable characteristics. This is a key point, which, if understood, would allow marketers to take a different perspective on segmentation, based less on the mass market approach of demographics and more on consumer beliefs. One example of such an approach is a study by Straughan and Roberts (1999), who focused on perceived consumer effectiveness (PCE) as an insight into ecologically conscious consumer behaviour (ECCB). PCE was found by Straughan and Roberts to be a key indicator in explaining ECCB. Although there is much criticism directed towards millennials and younger generations when it comes to texting, Crystals makes it clear that text like abbreviations have been used in English for centuries. The history of abbreviations can be dated back to Anglo Saxon tribes. Humphrys argument poses that texting poses a threat to literacy in our society, Crystal refutes this by giving examples of how word alterations and abbreviations similar to that of texting have been used for centuries by those with an adequate understanding of language for sake of brevity and creativity. In addition, Eric Partridge published a Dictionary of Abbreviations in 1942. Containing many text like examples, such as agn again , mth mouth , and gd good . Ernest Hemingway and Masculinity Essay Ernest Hemingway and Masculinity Ernest Hemingway, viewed as an American hero of his time, wrote novels that enrich the minds of his readers, creating a lasting image that goes far beyond the actual content of the story. But while reading Hemingway, I learned that his style was far from complex. Through pre meditated sentence structure, he creates a rhythm that parallels the action in the story. He wants the sentences themselves to be easy to understand, so the reader can use more energy focusing on the symbolism Hemingway s stories create. He skillfully places symbols and metaphors throughout his novels. In his own writing, Hemingway doesn t explain in detail his metaphors. Rather, he forces the reader to discover the ... By having his main character Jake Barnes impotent, Hemingway depicts a loss of masculinity that is common throughout his novels. He also contrasts men and women who hold onto their masculinity and men who lose it. Through his metaphors Hemingway uses empathy to draw the reader closer to the characters as they feel for their suffering. War, usually thought of as a masculine fight for glory, is reversed in Hemingway s writings. Instead of men showing their masculinity, he portrays a war that takes away men s masculinity through injuries that deprive them the rest of their lives. Truly, A Farewell to Arms and For Whom the Bell Tolls force the reader to question the need for sacrificing a man s life for a war. Is war worth dying over? The reader should note Robert Jordan s suicide mission in trying to make this decision for himself. Jordan understood that there was little hope of survival, and he cringed at the thought of not getting to live out his life with his new love Maria. But in the end, he takes the heroes path and blows up the bridge, which costs him his life. • 32. Persuasive Essay On Prohibition Of Drugs Laws that prohibit the possession and use of street drugs are important as their aim is to protect the user, those around them, and society in general from undue harm. There has been a great push during the last 10 years to legalize marijuana and decriminalize other drugs such as cocaine and heroin on the basis that the recreational user, and even the hard core addict, may not be causing significant harm to anyone, beyond their own personal health. In this sense, drug use is viewed as a personal choice and drug laws trample on personal freedoms without sufficient reason. Additionally, minorities are found to be arrested and convicted of drug crimes at disproportionate rates when compared to the demographics of those who use illegal drugs, which some see these type of laws as a tool of legal oppression, instead of a valid punitive function. Still, there remains sufficient reasons to maintain laws against the possession and use of controlled substances, such as marijuana, cocaine, and heroin; though there is a compelling argument for the lessening of the amount punishment of the majority of users that are caught with small amounts of street drugs. This paper seeks to put forward valid reasons for the continued prohibition of drugs, while also making a case for the softening of incarceration policies. Some argue that the use of mind or mood altering substances is a matter of personal expression. They assume the philosophical stance that what one individual finds enlightening as a means of helping them to reach their best personal self, may be a hindrance to others (Mill, 2014). They view the consumption of a substance as a personal freedom, in their pursuit to find fulfillment and contentment in life. The argument that drug use is a personal choice has some merit, but loses traction when it is compared to the reasons societies were formed, how they function, and the benefits the individual obtains from membership. A society is where individuals and groups come together to establish rules, accomplish common goals, and provide for the public welfare, while also allowing space for the pursuit of personal interests (Stone, 2002). Histone Code Hypothesis The replacement of somatic histones with testis specific variants in early haploid germ cells is undoubtedly an essential step for promoting chromatin remodeling during spermiogenesis, and it is believed to involve the histone code. The histone code hypothesis proposes that combinations of histone modification could serve as specific signals that recruit protein domains to alter chromatin structure to either promote or suppress gene transcription (Turner, 2002). There is evidence for the involvement of the histone code in chromatin remodeling as stage specific histone modifications have been reported to occur during spermiogenesis, namely histone H4 acetylation, histone H3 methylation and phosphorylation, and histone H2A ubiquitination (Song ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Protamines are 50 amino acid long, cysteine and arginine rich proteins that bind tightly to the negative DNA backbone. As with TPs, PRMs are transcribed in round spermatids and only appear in late spermiogenesis to complete chromatin condensation. Their positive charge stabilizes the chromatin as it abolishes electrostatic repulsion between proximal chromatin strands, forming toroids loops (Cho et al., 2003). Further chromatin compaction occurs during epididymal transit during which PRMs form disulfide bridges between cysteine residues to form a semi crystalline chromatin (Carrell et al., 2007). Two PRMs have been identified, PRM1 and PRM2, both of which are present in human and mouse germ cells, but only PRM1 exists in the rat. There are two critical differences dissociate the two protamines, both structurally and functionally. First, PRM2 binds longer stretches of DNA, which renders the chromatin less compacted. Second, PRM2 coordinates one zinc atom, which in the case of humans makes zinc deficiency an important issue (Balhorn, 2007). However, this difference does not make one PRM more essential than the other. It is this debate of being in a state of modernity or post modernity that will lead me to describe the shifts in cultural, economic and political views and values that demonstrates a shift in values from modern to post modern views sociy. This shift to post modernity has been highly influenced through the works of postmodern artists and architects and academics such as Focult (Venn, C., Featherstone, M. 2006), Burroughs, Barthelme, Rauschenberg and Cage (Clarke, S. 2006), who all describe modernity being an exhausted idea, due to the shift of values changing society to a period of post modernity. Committing this crime can result in imprisonment and cause the defendant to be charged with a felony even if they weren t previously aware of the age of the victim at the time in which the act was done. When a statutory rape case is being evaluated, the victim must be under the age of 18 or under the age of consent and the one presenting the case must have proof that sexual intercourse occurred. The reason why this law was put into play was because in the eyes of the government it is believed that unless one is over the age of consent, they are physically and mentally incapable of giving consent to any sexual activities. Although the amendment states that all men are created equal, there is still an existing gender bias favoring women when it comes down to who commits the crime. Statement Of Purpose For A Robot STATEMENT OF PURPOSE Motion Engaged , as it displayed, the robot turned around and moved towards the fourteen year old, whose fathomless curiosity waited for answers to a thousand questions regarding the mysterious object. Just one thought kept coming back to me which one of them was a miracle, the components that made the robot alive, or the man who knew exactly what to do with them. Both, I finally concluded. If god has blessed us with semiconductors, it is man, who in his conquest for progress has discovered in these materials the means of putting his dreams to shape. My interest in VLSI is deep rooted. Even before I began studying it as a Science I remember reading about the gadgets in magazines. From the invention of the first silicon transistor to the microchip invented by Texas Instruments, from the first vacuum tubes and integrated circuits, to the Intel microprocessor and the present day C.P.U. every event has been a milestone which I have not only read about but also savoured for how it has ...
