It was January 7th, 2017, the weather alert had been right, there was a pretty darn big snowstorm
outside, but inside, of the Boston Latin School auditorium, the 10th Annual MMEA Eastern Senior
District Festival were filled with excited spirits that were much bigger. There was a smattering of
students from each school in the Eastern District, and many BLS students were part of them. A
feeling of awe and admiration floated through me as I saw them enter the stage. In 4 years, I would
be just like them, I hoped.
There were 4 fantastic music ensembles that would perform: Concert Band, Orchestra, Jazz Band,
and Chorus. Each group had a particular conductor, but all performed with much skill, gusto, and
professionalism.

The hippocampus is smaller in patients with depression. The smaller hippocampus is thought to be
diminished because of a persistent exposure to stress hormones, like cortisol, which impacts the
growth of nerve cells. The hippocampus is highly susceptible to stress, perhaps because the
protracted ontogeny or the high amount of glucocorticoid receptors (Uma Rao et al.; 2010). The
longer the patient has depression, or the more episodes of depression the patient experiences, the
smaller the hippocampal volumes become. Stress correlates with the smaller hippocampus,
researchers used twenty nine patients with depression, twenty two patients with severe
depression and thirty two control patients. All patients were around the same age, physically
healthy, alcohol and drug free, and did not have any other kind of mental illness like bi polar
disorder, autism, or schizophrenia. Structural imagery was used to obtain the images of each
patients entire brain. Then an image was aligned with the anterior commissure and posterior
commissure as well as the borders of the left and right hippocampus. From the MRI scans and
using a formula the hippocampal volumes were figured. All of the patients were followed up on,

This project is about analyzing the voice signals and computing the MFCC i.e (Mel frequency
Cepstral Coefficient) and the VQ (Vector Quantisation) to be carried out.
So, as you can see there are nine steps carried out in here. The first one is about taking our own
voice signal and storing that in the database. So, this step is basically the most vital of all because
we as human beings can distinguish and recognize each other s voice. For ex. If four of us speak
in a group we can easily distinguish who spoke first and who finished at the last. Now, for a
computer to distinguish individual voice signals are not an easy task as everyone has their own

So, now collectively organizing all the data points and using them for comparison purposes is
quite hectic. So, what we do we use VQ. You can see the red circles and the speaker 1 and the
crosses and for the speaker 2 and both of the data points don t coincide. What we are using here

Let me show you the user database in which my friend s voice is stored. As you can see the
crosses show the speaker 5 points and the delta shows the centroid values. Now how can we
calculate the centroid values is the main function here. Now what we have done we calculate the
mean and it is splitted in two parts and orthogonal to the two parts a line is drawn and the mean
is calculated for both the areas and the process goes on and on an in the end for comparison
purposes these centroid values their distances are calculated and those found with the minimum
distances their match is found with the user. Likewise here for speaker 4 and 5 are shown where
red crosses and blue crosses represent the signals of the speakers and similarly for these speakers
the centroid values and mean are calculated and minimum distance is found
