The Crucible Of Life By Timothy Crutcher
The Crucible of Life, by Timothy Crutcher, is a book that explains: the interrelationship of theological
method and religious epistemology, the function of experience as an authority, the specific
epistemological grounds, and the usefulness today of John Wesley s theological method (17). The
book begins by explaining an important distinction in Wesley s usage of the word experience in
comparison to our contemporary common use of the word. That is, Wesley uses the word experience
to describe an outward, active process rather than a subjective and passive interpretation (23).
Furthermore, it is noted that Wesley should not be assumed to be a Lockean philosopher due to his
variety of philosophical roots (25). Then, the book explains in ... Show more content on

In other words, subjective experience offers no grounds to be tested against in Wesley s view (82).
Then, the authority of scripture and its a priori usage is presented. Scripture provides a positive a
priori, which is information that is useful when approaching new experiences (98) and negative a
priori, which is that which provides boundaries to our understandings (102). Furthermore, our
interpretation of scripture is monitored by reason. Reason (as logic) is necessary for a correct
interpretation of scripture to Wesley (110). Without it, we would be unable to acquire tools for proper
interpretation of scripture. In addition, reason may only be utilized when provided with experience
(115). However, experience, at times, can exceed that which reason has the power to evaluate (117).
And so, when reason is unable to be utilized to evaluate a particular experience, the hermeneutical
process between reason and experience becomes useful. We can evaluate our experiences via reason
continually until our experiences eventually point in a direction that can, perhaps, issue analyzable
knowledge on issues that were, at first, merely subjective (120). If an experience never arises in an
objective, rather than subjective, way throughout the hermeneutical, then Wesley admits that not even
his concept of spiritual senses can resolve the issue and the experience

History of the Battle of Shiloh
Introduction The Battle of Shiloh is historically known as one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War.
Part of the Western Campaign, Shiloh came on the heels of Union victories at Fort Henry and Fort
Donelson, primarily as a Confederate attempt to halt the Union s advance into the deep South. Though
causes of the Union victory at Shiloh may be disputed, the significance of this Battle to the War s
outcome is undeniable. Analysis When, Where and Why the Battle of Shiloh Took Place The Battle of
Shiloh took place on April 6 7, 1862 (Daniel, 1997, p. 319) in southern Tennessee s Hardin County,
particularly at Pittsburg Landing (Groom, 2012, p. 41). The short answer to why this Battle took place
is that the Confederacy wanted to stop the Union s advance far into Tennessee and eventually into
Mississippi by a surprise attack on Ulysses S. Grant s Army of the Tennessee before Union Major
General Don Carlos Buell s Army of the Ohio could arrive and join Grant s forces (Groom, 2012, p.
141). The long answer to why this Battle took place can be found in the two prior Confederate losses
at Fort Henry and Fort Donelson in February, 1862, and the consequences of those losses. The
captures of Fort Henry and Fort Donelson were the first two Union victories since the beginning of the
War on April 12, 1861 (Woodworth, 2011, p. 89). The Union capture of Fort Henry in western
Tennessee on February 6, 1862 allowed Union forces to move 12 miles east overland to Fort Donelson

Analysis Of Donovan Campbell s A New York Times...
Donovan Campbell, a New York Times Bestselling author as well as a former Captain of the United
States Marine Corps offers unique insight on what it means and what it takes to become a remain a
strong leader; in fact, he offers 8 chapters of insight, each one representing a different key concept on
leadership. Each concept is different, however each one builds onto one another as the book
progresses. While reading this book, I took careful notes on each concept as well as how I could
incorporate each one into my own life. The first concept is mission. Campbell opens this chapter by
telling a story about his time in the Marine Corps. The point of his anecdote was that understanding
his own mortality is what helped him strive to do ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Humility is not denying that we are good at or have done a good job on things. Campbell says that if
we do that then we lose a realistic view of ourselves, which is what humility really is. When trying to
think about how this could apply to my current life, the best example I thought of what working on
group projects in school. When I thought about Campbell s words and then applied them to that
situation, I felt I understood what he was saying. When working in a group, everyone has their
strengths and weaknesses. If I know that I could use one of my strengths to help the project, then
denying that I could do a good job will only hurt the team in the end. Instead, by utilizing that skill
properly, the team will benefit. and having a realistic view of the teams strengths, then we could all
use them to help the project. After reading Campbell s chapter on humility, I understood that everyone
acknowledging their own strengths and weaknesses is much better than everyone putting themselves
down to try to appear humble. The term excellence is daunting. If you asked me, before I read this
book, how I could achieve excellence daily, I would have told you simply: I can t. Before reading the
chapter about the third pillar of leadership, I thought that excellence was something reserved only for
great presidents, and people in the military

Summary Of Globalization
Globalization Textbook Readings (Chapters 19 20) Chapter nineteen elaborates on the big picture of
globalization and discusses the many definitions; contested meanings; and both cultural and economic
aspects of the term. In this chapter, the authors argue that defining the term globalization is difficult,
and stress the importance of understanding the spatial and temporal aspects that parallel its
geographical scope. Furthermore, this chapter emphasizes that globalization is more than
understanding global, national, regional, and local relationships; it is also critical to consider the
uneven development, networks, flows, and interconnectedness in the world. In Key Concepts of
Geography (KCG), chapter twenty discusses aspects of globalization that relate to the physical and
environmental sciences. The chapter emphasizes four key themes related to this: (1) the technologies
for enhancing scientific knowledge; (2) the role physical geographers and environmental scientists
have in the politicization of the environment; (3) the relationship of physical geography with science
and related activity; and (4) the historical and contemporary nature of physical geography. Chapter
twenty also mentions the globalization syndrome and highlights the relationship between politics,
environment, and development; the participation of geography within modern conservation efforts and
historical resource exploitation; and the difficulties that geography has had with concepts which
integrate a wide range of different knowledge of the world. Both chapters address the broadness of
globalization, but chapter twenty stresses that it is not a term which has been frequently applied in the
environmental and physical sciences and it certainly has a place there. In contrast to this, chapter
nineteen places much emphasis on the social aspects of globalization. While this is a notable
difference, both chapters nineteen and twenty do acknowledge temporal and spatial factors, and also
the interconnectedness that globalization often attempts to define.

Sql Injection Paper
SQL Injection
Recently, Aim Higher College has seen several cases of sensitive information being stolen from a
student information system and posted on the Web. After reviewing Web server and database logs, you
believe that the source of the problem is a SQL injection vulnerability. The vulnerability appears to
exist in a Web application used by students to register for courses. SQL injection is a technique where
malicious users inject SQL commands into an SQL statement, via web page input. Injected SQL
commands can alter SQL statement and compromise the security of a web application. SQL injection
is one of the oldest, most prevalent and dangerous of web application vulnerability. I believe attackers
could steal information by following methods. Most web pages have users or given user id to login,
and original idea ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some web developers use blacklist of words and characters, but some words like delete and
semicolons should be allowed in many types of input. I think the best way to prevent is combination
of protection. I would recommend to use SQL parameters. SQL parameters are values that are added
to an SQL query at execution time, in a controlled manner. I would use patches and updates in
exploited database and application as soon as possible. The firewall should be in place to help to filter
out malicious data. Adding new rules regarding SQL injections to firewall will help to detect and
patch. Also, use appropriate privileges and keep password hash and encrypted. Password should be
change regularly, which overlook most of the time. In addition, I would not display a lot information
about database architecture from error messages and use the Remote Only custom Errors mode, so
external hacker will not get any additional information. After all, SQL injection is most popular tool
for hackers to obtain and manipulate data, because it is easy to use. However, combination of the
protections can keep secure and monitor

Bed Bath And Beyond s Weaknesses
The weakness factor from SWOT has the main task of exposing and recording the faults of a
company. Derived from SWOT analysis, weaknesses are part of the subject that focuses on the
negative aspects of a company (Hellman, 2016). When analyzing Bed Bath Beyond, their weaknesses
can be associated with factors such as a company s popularity, customer satisfaction, profitability,
production, expansion, etc. One of Bed Bath Beyond s weaknesses relates to its reliance on third party
vendors and manufacturers, which focuses on product quality. Since a majority of Bed Bath Beyond s
products are manufactured within various facilities, there is always a risk of manufacturing errors

Struggle Of Funding During The Nineteenth Century Essay
Struggle of Funding In the early 17th century colonist was required to teach their children how to read
the bible. During this period, the Puritans in Massachusetts enacted the Old Deluder Act, forcing
communities of fifty families or more to establish funds, and operate schools. Many didn t follow the
law because they were not privileged as the wealthy communities were; therefore, many poor children
remained uneducated unless they were taught by their families. According to Bayer Sampat, (2016),
the Land Ordinance of 1875, and the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 were passed requiring areas to
establish schools. Thomas Jefferson and Dr. Benjamin Rush spoke in favor of a public education
system, unfortunately it wasn t established until the nineteenth century.
Moving forward, the United States public schools funding comes from the state, the federal
government, and local communities. The appropriation of these funds varies according to several
factors; however, the federal government only gives a fraction of these funds compared to the local
and state governments. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, in the United States,
about 93% is funded via the state and local governments (Bayer Sampat, 2016).
As world economy changes defining and reshaping educational policies, goals were set to make global
organizations efficient by decreasing spending to promote cost effectiveness and encouraging
establishments to do better with less. School districts in the

Taking a Look at Educational Psychology
This course has taught me many new things about teaching. I have gained knowledge about topics
such as moral education, expertise, decision making, and classroom management, just to name a few.
Through the reading and portfolio essays, my desire to teach has strengthened throughout the
semester. Because of this course, I now have a better understanding of the educational and
psychological needs my future students, as well as myself, will have and how to meet them. The
portfolio essays that I have completed throughout this course have taught me several things. Each
week, the essay reviewed and allowed me to think more in depth about the content in the chapter. I
was forced to think critically about each topic and even occasionally do further research in order to
write the essay. An example of this, and also one of my favorite portfolio essays, was the essay from
Chapter 7. I chose to write the portfolio essay on the television show Sesame Street. I greatly enjoyed
writing this essay, as it was very interesting to watch an episode of Sesame Street while analyzing it
for educational material. Writing this essay opened my eyes to many educational opportunities outside
of school that I can utilize in my future classroom. The portfolio essay from Chapter 14 allowed me to
ponder the relationship between teacher and student. This is an area in which I have slight concern. I
fear that as a teacher I will be too nice and possibly overstep my boundaries or under estimate my

What To Sacrifice Research Paper
To sacrifice is to give up something important for something even better, which may cause pain; but,
in the end, it will be totally worth it. I have witnessed my own friends performing such a damaging act
that hurt me as individual, mentally, and has made me begin to struggle in daily activities. I have
allowed myself to become stressed out, ignore the healthier relationships in my life, and have noticed
a great decrease in my self esteem. However, I have learned that these problems were or can be
created due to the reaction and response I express. This reaction has both hurt me and helped me build
as an individual. Some people respond by getting revenge on the other person, which ends up making
him or her just as disrespectful as the other; while I have realized it is better to forgive rather than hold
a grudge. I also have realized forgiving someone makes me appear more respectable, and it ultimately
places me in a higher place than the individual I am dealing with; forgiveness may be a painful thing
to go through, but in the long run, I have benefited from it in numerous ways. ... Show more content

I begin to create a constant fear in my head that the person who hurt me once will most likely do it
again. I have learned that allowing someone a second, third, or sometimes fourth chance, creates an
image that does not show respect for myself. It has shown the person that is hurting me that they can
do whatever they please because I will forgive them anyways; which is not how I want to be viewed in
society. I fear the same occurrence will remain and that I will appear weak to others; appearing weak
in society is not the type of person I am. I have learned that even though I may get hurt again, I have
to do what is right and remove that person from my life, which will eliminate my fear and allow me to

One thing that I learned from this story is that you cannot always believe what you see you have to
believe what you feel. Morrie stated, And if you are ever going to have other people trust you, you
must feel that you can trust them too even when you re in the dark. Even when you re falling. I also
learned that you should always look at life in a unique way. During the story Morrie is always looking
at life through a different perspective such as when he realized that he is becoming incapable of doing
everyday things. ...I have to look at life uniquely... I can sit here with my dwindling days and look at
what I think is important in life. I have both the time and the reason to do that. Also through this story
I learned that the most important thing in life is to learn how to give out love, and to let it come in.
Sometimes we think that we do not deserve to be loved and sometimes we think that love is
meaningless. In the story Morrie suggests Let it come in... Love is the only rational act.
By meeting with his former professor, Mitch Albom is able to take a look in on his life and learn
things that took Morrie years to learn. Overall I thought that Tuesdays with Morrie was a great and

Having information and access to family planning, abortion services, maternal and child health (such
as knowing what to do after giving birth) and/or preventing and treating diseases to anyone and

women were able to control when they wanted to give birth and how many children they wanted to

there was access to all that information, specifically in poorer countries and third world countries

the property that is the invention or a creative work by one s own idea or knowledge. There is law that
protects this intellectual property by giving some restrictions to the persons who use it; these laws are
called copyright laws. When a person who is using the creative work of another person and when that

In Today’S Global Market, China Is One, If Not The World’S
In today s global market, China is one, if not the world s most important player. When China s
economy is doing well, the majority of the world s economies tend to do the same. When China s
economy is slow, the rest of the world usually follows. At the start of the 2016 year, China s stock

the trend. It is clear that when China slows down, its trade partners follow. China affects a lot of

After the war, Mao Zedong took over China in 1949 (BBC History Mao Zedong). Shortly after, China
s influence in the global economy declined. China s involvement in the global economy was only 5%
during his rule (Holodny). This happened as a result from Mao Zedong implementing The Great Leap

modernize China s economy so that it could match up with the economy of the United States by
around 1988 (Trueman). He saw potential growth in agriculture and industry. His reasoning for
choosing agriculture and industry was that one could not blossom without the other. Agriculture
needed industry because they needed the best machinery and equipment to succeed, while the industry
would prosper if it was fed well by agriculture. To do this, the government took complete control.
Schools, tools, retirement homes, entertainment, and healthcare were all provided by the government

The Unified Effect In The Fall Of The House Of Usher
During the whole of a dull, dark, and soundless day in the autumn of the year, (412) is the first
sentence in The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe. This beginning sentence sets the tone
of dark. Gothic Literature s style has elements of fear, horror, gloomy and death; it gives the feeling of
suspense and fear. This story is a great example of Gothic Literature. In this story the narrator goes to
Usher s house, which is mysterious, and becomes aware that the house is like Usher who is sick. Poe s
technique of the unified effect accomplishes its intended purpose through the setting, plot
development and imagery. One way Poe accomplished the unified effect was by the way he described
the setting. Poe used very descriptive words, Feeble gleams of encrimsoned light made their way
through the trellised panes, and served to render sufficiently distinct the more prominent objects,
(416). This sentence gives a certain dark tone Poe was achieving. This simply means that a dim,
reddened light was shining only on the important objects. The light being encrimsoned suggest that
there is blood or death. This is foreshadowing the ending of the story which contributes to the plot
development for Poe s technique. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

us that this would be the last time the narrator would see the lady and that she would be dead by the
end. On top of that, this lets the readers know that there is death involved, gives the feeling of
suspense, which helps with imagery, and sets a dark

The Differences Between The Renaissance Era And Baroque Era
To help one differentiate between the Renaissance Era and Baroque Era Heinrich Wolfflin created the
Wolfflin Method. The Wolfflin Method compares the two eras in a masterful way that helps one
simplify the differences between the Renaissance and Baroque Eras. The Renaissance Era is
represented by linear, planar, closed, and multiplicity elements. All of these elements combined to
create a crisp painting where lines and shapes are distinguished. The Baroque Era is represented by
painterly, recessional, open, and unity elements. These four elements help create a painting that uses
shadows to create dimension and depth within the piece giving the viewer an overall sense of unity.
The Wolfflin Method assists the viewer in understanding the differences between the Renaissance and
Baroque Era.
The first painting to be analyzed is The Last Days of Pompeii, by Karl Bryullov. This painting
distinctly displays elements from the Baroque Era. Although this painting has a linear element, which
comes from the Renaissance Era, it s still Baroque. The white building that is quickly crumbling has
clear defined lines with sharp edges. All of the people displaced in the painting also has defined edges
and can be differentiated from one another. This example demonstrates how the linear element is
displayed. There are a few groups of people that are on different levels, kneeling, standing, or laying
on the floor, creating diagonal lines throughout the painting, showing the recessional element.

As individuals the lovers are ignored by mostpeople whose routine lives reflect the passage of time.
The only to notice the lovers and stray their attention from life s normal routine are the children, who
maintain their innocence, but who soon grow up and forget. Cummings has been noted for this regular
indulgence in the themes of love, birth, growth, dying, and their antithesis, (Wegner 48) as found not
only in this specific poem playing the parts of the cycle of time but also in many other of his works.
The poem is expressing the concrete and paradoxically its opposite through a play on pronouns.
Anyone lives in a pretty how town is the story of mostpeople and individuals, simultaneously a joyous
and sorrowful song (Turco 93). The title s ambiguity plays on the use of a hypallage: rearrangement of
syntax word order in a sentence (Turco 92). The title could be interpreted as either anyone lived in a
pretty how town or anyone lived in how pretty a town or how anyone lived in a pretty town. The
anyone could be nobody in particular or that particular person capable of love. As Robert Wegner

Thrasymachus Vs Plato
Friedrich Nietzsche and Thrasymachus both depict their account of justice and morality. On the
Genealogy of morals and The Republic of Plato share similarities but express different views on the
genesis of justice and morality. The first account on the genesis of justice and morality, Thrasymachus
expresses that justice and morality are naturally beneficial to the ruling class. In a similar manner,
Nietzsche states that the genesis of justice and morality is created by the people in power, and the
weaker are forced to accept it. The second account on the genesis of justice and morality, Friedriche

Thrasymachus supports the view that the views of true morality are devised as a reflection of
particular political communities. Thrasymachus believes that the definitions of good morality and bad
morality set forward by the ruling class are not necessarily correct. In addition, Thrasymachus argues
that this is disadvantageous to everyone else and only beneficial to those in power, each ruling group
sets down laws for its own advantage (Republic I, 338d). The argument states that by acting morally
benefits those in power, and acting immorally negatively affects people in power and benefits the
oneself. In a similar manner, Nietzsche states that the genesis of justice and morality is created by the
people in power, and the weaker are forced to accept it. The people in power refer to the ruling class
and the weaker refer to the slave classes. On the Genealogy of Morals states that the ruling class

judgement good does not derive from those whom goodness is shown! Rather, the good themselves
that is, the noble, the powerful, the superior, and the high minded were the ones who felt themselves

characteristics of the ruling class and bad morality refers to people who are concerned with what is

Women In The Laboratory
Explore the presentation of female voices in Shakespeare s Macbeth, Duffy s Medusa and Havisham
and Robert Browning s poem (The Laboratory)
Throughout history women have been expected to obey and serve men , especially their husbands.
These ideas have been developed in society because of the powerful influence of religious doctrine.
As a consequence, females have been subject to very narrow gender definitions. However, as
presented in poems Havisham, Medusa and The Laboratory and the play Macbeth, certain women
wish not to adhere to these idealised views. In fact, all the women in these texts display some anti
female traits. In this essay, I wish to explore how Shakespeare, Duffy and Browning all give these

Quotes like hissed and spat on my scalp expose the snake like thoughts Medusa holds. The use of
sibilance also adds aggression to what s said by Medusa as saying the words make you spit. To add,
the description of Medusa s mouth being Yellow fanged and foul shows us how unclean medusa is and
the how her teeth are Fanged implement animalistic characteristics and aggression into Medusa herself
as words like fanged and foul are usually associated with animals specifically lions and snakes
meaning that she can cause a lot of harm with her mouth. The idea of foul ness comes from the
witches during act 1 scene 1 when they say fair is foul, and foul is fair. The idea of something bad
being good creates the idea that doing the wrong thing is the right thing. So by the female protagonist

her mouth as a weapon, this is scene in the quote chastise with the valour of my tongue . The fact that
she uses her tongue as a weapon completely contrasts with her husband as during the opening scenes
of the play we see that Macbeth s weapon is his brandished steel this shows us how Lady Macbeth

Bruce Chatwin s What Am I Doing Here
Walking is a virtue, tourism is a deadly sin. These are some of the words uttered by Bruce Chatwin,
the famous author of the book, What Am I Doing Here.? International tourism is one of the fastest
growing industries in the word, and brings over 111 billion dollars annually in the U.S.A., and
employs 1 out of 9 people in developing countries. However, despite the fact these are impressive
statistics, and benefits, International tourism isn t without drawbacks.

one thing, International tourism can open job opportunities for the native citizens. To demonstrate,

One prominent problem is that historic sites could lose their value, and get damaged. In other words,
once a tourist visits a historic site, it s most likely he or she won t be back to that site for a long period
of time. Thus, the tourist ends up taking a small piece of wood, or anything that is related to the place
as a memory. Subsequently, if millions of people do the same, then the historic site will lose its value,
and eventually become worthless. Moreover, because of the pollutant gasses the cars, and the planes
release into the air, the tourists could contaminate the locations they visit, especially remote places,
such as islands. Secondly, the tourists might make the native inhabitants uncomfortable. To provide
explanation, because the tourists don t share the same values as the natives, worship different deities,
or cloth in an un desirable fashion the native people can end up feeling offended. Lastly, the
government might decide to focus resources on tourists rather than its citizens. This phenomenon is
largely thanks to tourism bringing a lot of revenue compared to many other industries. Therefore,
making the government spend more money on making the country tourism friendly rather than
improving the lives of the residents. To recap, international tourism can damage historic sites, offend
the natives, and result in the government focusing more on tourism.

Music in the American Revolution
In the American Revolution, music played an important part of American culture no matter what
sector of society. The music of the era served as a social commentary on the political concerns of the
period aside from entertainment. The music was expressed through many forms, songs, hymns and
varied instrumental musical traditions that reflected the social conditions which created it. Church
music was an important source of spiritual inspiration and expression of the patriotic sentiment. The

The southern colonies were different; they were less homogenous with multiple religious views. The
agricultural geography made up of large portions of land owned allowed for more individualism as the

tradition, in the same way that the economy was more individualistic the music too, was more
individualist and amateur mostly for private enjoyment. Music making in the south was more of a
private affair taking place in the residences of the upper class. Mid eighteenth century elite class
amateur musicians often ordered books and musical scores from England, the music was often that of
the European masters of the period.
We do not think often of Thomas Jefferson as a musician, but he used to practice the violin three hours

of the musical culture of the land owner amateur musician of the south. The same pattern of music

metropolitan life, comparable to London. The city boasted of more of a public musical culture with

Feminism In Persepolis
All women in their lifetime go through an experience that makes them feel proud and dignified to be a
woman. Marjane Satrapi strives to find this feeling of self worth and the satisfaction of being a woman
in Iran as she grows up during her war torn childhood in her bildungsroman, Persepolis. Marjane
experiences both positive and negative moments throughout the memoir such as growing up alone in
Austria, speaking against women s dress codes, and her constant struggle to make her grandma proud,
all which help her learn independence and help form her into a strong feminist woman.
As Marjane experiences new ideas and culture once she moves to Austria as a teenager, she finds that
there are many things she doesn t agree with or understand. Fitting in as a teenager is hard enough
without having to deal with being stranded all alone, which is exactly what Satrapi had to endure for
years on end. During those years of growth, Marjane ran into many obstacles including her
relationship with boys and smoking. One of Marjane s first friends that she made while living in
Austria was the influence for much of her confusion when it came to social activities. Marjane was
surprised when she attended a party and it was the opposite of what parties were like in Iran where
there was dancing and food, instead people preferred to lie around and smoke (Satrapi 185). Almost
everything Marjane experienced in Austria was against how she was raised in Iran. Marjane thought to

Virtual Schooling Is A Viable Entity For Educating Students
Virtual Schooling is a viable entity for educating students ranging from kindergarten to graduate

educating students. Additionally, having virtual schooling as a choice, rather than a requirement for all
classes, enables educational institutions to maintain and, in some cases, increase their retention and
graduation rates. Recent trends in school reporting data supporting the benefits of virtual schooling

Today, online learning is used in the K 12 setting to provide courses the local school is unable to offer,

as well as those who don t thrive in traditional classes. As virtual schooling increases and access to
technology grows, the areas of need that it addresses continue to expand.. There are several key steps
that must be addressed in order for successful virtual schooling to take place: Be realistic about
technology. Outdated computer labs are not going to support virtual schooling. Technology has to be
up to date in order to support the online learner, including computers and internet service. Programs

Owls Research Paper
Owls are almost freakishly flexible. Owls necks can swivel up to 270 degrees without tearing tendons
or rupturing a blood vessel (8). Scientists from John Hopkins University School of Medicine have
information to explain how owls are able to perform the feat that has endlessly confused birders.
People and most animals can move their eyes to see their surroundings, owls have fixed eyes, which
means that they are immovable (8). Because of this, owls need to move their necks in order to be able
to see anything. Owls bodies are more flexible than humans, because unlike humans, who have two
socket pivots, owls only have one. This allows them to twist more freely (8). According to Eric

These birds can fly right above their prey s noses without being spotted, simply because of their
wings. Their silentness is due to their unique wings. In other birds, when air flows over their wings, it
creates a gushing noise as large areas of air turbulence build up (4). Unlike the other avian creatures,
the owl has a way of silencing this gush of air. At the owl s wing edge, there are small bows and hooks
that split up rushing air into miniature turbulences (4). These miniature turbulences flow down the
wing toward the trailing edge (4). The trailing edge is attached to special, pliable trimming feathers.
These feathers split the air even farther as it rolls off the trailing edge, making the flight of the bird
almost noiseless. However, if there s the tiniest bit of noise left, it gets absorbed into the down, or
short and soft, feathers. Even though the owl is equipped with numerous noise cancelling flight tools,
it is still complicated for them to make a catch because their wing has to be at the perfect angle when
the bird dives for its prey in order for the special silent feathers to work. However, when used
correctly, all of these feathers combined reduce noise so efficiently that even humans can t hear flying

Analysis Of The Pardoner
My initial reaction to the work was one on astonishment. Everything that the Pardoner was saying and

examples from history and the Bible. However, the Pardoner himself states For I ll have money, wool,

meaning that he would rather take from the starving and destitute than give up his creature comforts.
In Flanders, there were three young hooligans who loved to amuse themselves by gambling, being

silly looking, or have bad attitudes or behavior, and usually have a lot of problems, but they re still
amazing. I never used to like them, but after getting one, I love them! First of all, French bulldogs are

dog. There are all kinds of different colors of Frenchies, like blue, cream, red, red and black mask, pie,

their fur, and also have blue eyes. My dog is a cream, which are usually white, with cream brown
colors. There are many more colors, and too many to explain. I think the reason these dogs are so
popular and expensive is their appearance. Aside from being lovable, I think the appearance of the
French bulldog is a very important detail. Women usually like small dogs, right? Well, men usually
don t care for those tiny, girly looking dogs. However, French bulldogs are tiny dogs, but they re big,

The Benefits Of College Education
At the present time, college education in our society is no longer an alternative or a privilege but a
necessity. We have raised it in practice and are convinced that we need higher education to succeed in
life. There is a saying that says, If you think education is precious, try to ignore it. But since our times
and career needs are in constant motion college is an absolute necessity. There are people who never
walk in college and do better than those who have a Master s degree. There are opinions from both
sides that contain valid arguments. College is worth the price and duration because it generates more
financial opportunity which leads to a more stable and happy life.
A college degree can indeed translate to personal happiness, is it a coincidence? Bryan Cohen, author
of The Post College Guide to Happiness, thinks there s a connection. Higher education gives people
the opportunity to explore their passions, be they writing, engineering, or even magic, Cohen explains.
Graduates can use their educational experience to pursue what they love to do. That s why, Cohen
says, educational attainment can lead to some serious happiness. This is true college grads will have a
happier life due to better job conditions, as well as higher career fulfillment. Leonhardt stated only
27% of Americans can say they have a bachelor s degree or higher(41) This shows how rare a college

Congress Dysfunctions
Dysfunction can be found within the U.S. government. For the purpose of this paper I will argue that
the dysfunction is largely rooted and caused by U.S. culture and also caused by the political system.
Furthermore, I will conclude that through the culmination of a dysfunctional culture the dysfunctions
found within the political system has resulted in a dysfunctional government. Congress currently has
the lowest approval rating they have ever had, however, the incumbent reelection rates are over 90%.
This points to a culture where cooperation and compromise are no longer the prime objective. People
expect their congressman to force their issue and not compromise on issues that may be contrary to
their beliefs. According to America s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For instance, Wyoming has as many votes in the Senate as California. This disproportionate
representation allows for the rule of the minority. In a Democracy it seems entirely contrary to allow a
minority to influence the direction of the country, however, that is where we are at. In Madison s
Federalist 10, he expresses his concern for the rule of factions and also the rule of the minority. It
appears that through institutions like the Senate and the Electoral College we have allowed, to a
certain extent, the ability of minorities to sway major decisions. Furthermore, because of our
attachment to past institutions that at one point provided a certain service which has now become
completely arbitrary, we add to the rule of the minority. The Electoral College at one point provided a
service to the nation wherein people would vote their conscious if they felt the Republic was under
threat, however, this institution has become entirely arbitrary and unnecessary in the modern day. This
institution exhibits the diagnosis given in America in Decay wherein the institution has failed to adapt
to changing external circumstances. External circumstances pushed the Electoral College to become a
mouthpiece to the people s easily swayed minds. Arguably the Senate did not adapt well to external
circumstances as well. External forces pushed the Senate to become more democratic through the 17th

Hunger Banquet
The concept of a hunger banquet is to provide awareness of global hunger and poverty to the
privileged by making the wealth disparity among different social classes visible and how it affects
their daily life including meals. Our overall purpose of this experiment was to show the class how
subsidies correlate with poverty and hunger. Throughout our investigation we analyzed the reaction
and behaviors of our peers when peers to class differences, the Nixon deficiency payment program,
and international policy in regards to the WTO and commodity dumping. In our experiment, we used a
lottery to divide the the peers into two groups, the Big Farmers and the Small Farmers. The Big
Farmers were representative of the large crop producing countries, ... Show more content on

The small farmers who were crowded out as a result of the Nixon deficiency payment plan, the poor
who were given commodity corn, and those who died as a result of famine exhibited similar reactions
to those of the poor farmers when first divided. When we announced to the rich agribusiness farmers
that they could donate their food to their peers they were very generous with what they shared.
Afterward during our discussion the class was engaged showed understanding of the issues we had
presented to them and were asking insightful questions such as Why is it that water is cheaper than
soda? . In essence the class showed predictable reactions to our banquet, specifically the Nixon

Manipulation In Sister Carrie
The novel, Sister Carrie , is full of much drama and manipulation. The protagonist seeks living in the
high class way and is determined to do so. In order to get what she wants, she uses others to get it for
her. She is so obsessed with fame and wealth that she manipulates whoever and whenever with her
charm and grace.
The protagonist, Carrie, was an intriguing character. She appeared to be very emotional and unstable
in her feelings. She was over the moon at certain times of the day and depressed during others, but one
thing never changed: the way she felt about money. Carrie traveled to Chicago to begin a life that she
had always dreamed of. She wanted to buy expensive clothes and dine in the fanciest of restaurants,
but she was introduced ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They would only say that things would get better for her and that she would be able to make it .
Throughout Carrie and Drouet s relationship, Drouet was gone for the majority of the time, and
although Mr. Hurstwood stepped in to keep her company, she still felt isolated. Carrie is also lonely
when she is famous as well. You would think since she had so many admirers, she would feel loved
and appreciated. However, the readers are left with Carrie rocking in her chair by herself at the end of
the novel. This small lesson teaches us that loneliness is not just sitting by yourself at a lunch table or
staying at home on a Friday night, but it can also come from a state of feeling misunderstood and
underappreciated no matter how many people you keep in your

The Orson Welles Show
Orson Welles career took place in the mid thirties to late eighties in the twentieth century. He began
his career at age fifteen, starting in Ireland, making his acting debut in the Gate Theater in Dublin. By
eighteen, Welles started to appear in off Broadway productions. It was then that he also launched his
radio career. By age twenty, he had presented alternate interpretations of certain well known plays and
movies. At age twenty two he was the most notable Broadway star from Mercury Theater and, because
of this, BBC radio gave him an hour each week to broadcast whatever he pleased. That s when, at age
twenty five, he broadcast War of the Worlds, which caused panic due to the Martian invasions . By the
time he came into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His Mercury Theater of the Air also set high and new standards for future radio drama productions.
His directing philosophy was that his way was the best way. Welles work was solely self reliant and
dependent on his representation of guise. This style/philosophy contributed to the way modern artists
presently direct their films and movies. He began his most notable movie, Citizen Kane, with multiple
test shots and killed his own character by using a very low angle, as if the viewer was right there,
dead, with his character. Welles loved to introduce his films by starting with mysterious, bleak worlds.
His main goal was to show future directors that deeply focused camera shots, shadows, askew angles,
multiple action points, sound techniques borrowed from radio, and deeply focused shots worked in the
favor of the production.
Orson Welles didn t just impact the filming realm, but, by being an actor himself, showed that he
possessed a very strong standpoint on what an ideal actor was. Orson said that, to him, acting was like
a sculpture. It s what you take away from yourself to reveal the truth of what you re doing that makes
a performance. A performance deserves to be considered great or important. It s always entirely made
up of the actor itself and entirely achieved by what he has left in the dressing room before he came
into the camera s view. There s no such thing as becoming another character by

Macbeth And Robin Talley s As I Descended By William...
Throughout the history of literature, classic tales have been adapted and rewritten by various authors.
While this practice is more conspicuously noted in popular culture, it has existed for centuries. For
instance, while Gil Junger s 1999 romantic comedy 10 Things I Hate About You is obviously a
retelling of William Shakespeare s Taming of the Shrew, Shakespeare s own Romeo and Juliet is an
adaptation of Ovid s Pyramus and Thisbe from Metamorphoses. As a result, retellings are only a
natural occurrence in literature and can oftentimes convey the basic story in new and exciting ways.
On the other hand, retellings can also miss the mark, failing to produce a story that can triumphantly
stand on its own as a work of art. For example, Robin Talley s As I Descended is a modern retelling of
William Shakespeare s Macbeth, being adapted to fall within the genre of young adult literature. When
evaluating As I Descended as a retelling, the characters and basic plot of Macbeth can be identified,
but an added underlying story that introduces unnecessary plot points both causes frustration and
overcomplicates the novel. In Talley s As I Descended, any reader who possesses background
knowledge of Macbeth can easily identify the play s principal characters and overall plot. Without a
doubt, Lord and Lady Macbeth are personified by Maria, the story s main protagonist who carries out
evil deeds for her own success, and Lily, the mastermind who manipulates Maria, respectively.

  • 2. The Crucible Of Life By Timothy Crutcher The Crucible of Life, by Timothy Crutcher, is a book that explains: the interrelationship of theological method and religious epistemology, the function of experience as an authority, the specific epistemological grounds, and the usefulness today of John Wesley s theological method (17). The book begins by explaining an important distinction in Wesley s usage of the word experience in comparison to our contemporary common use of the word. That is, Wesley uses the word experience to describe an outward, active process rather than a subjective and passive interpretation (23). Furthermore, it is noted that Wesley should not be assumed to be a Lockean philosopher due to his variety of philosophical roots (25). Then, the book explains in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In other words, subjective experience offers no grounds to be tested against in Wesley s view (82). Then, the authority of scripture and its a priori usage is presented. Scripture provides a positive a priori, which is information that is useful when approaching new experiences (98) and negative a priori, which is that which provides boundaries to our understandings (102). Furthermore, our interpretation of scripture is monitored by reason. Reason (as logic) is necessary for a correct interpretation of scripture to Wesley (110). Without it, we would be unable to acquire tools for proper interpretation of scripture. In addition, reason may only be utilized when provided with experience (115). However, experience, at times, can exceed that which reason has the power to evaluate (117). And so, when reason is unable to be utilized to evaluate a particular experience, the hermeneutical process between reason and experience becomes useful. We can evaluate our experiences via reason continually until our experiences eventually point in a direction that can, perhaps, issue analyzable knowledge on issues that were, at first, merely subjective (120). If an experience never arises in an objective, rather than subjective, way throughout the hermeneutical, then Wesley admits that not even his concept of spiritual senses can resolve the issue and the experience ... • 3. History of the Battle of Shiloh Introduction The Battle of Shiloh is historically known as one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War. Part of the Western Campaign, Shiloh came on the heels of Union victories at Fort Henry and Fort Donelson, primarily as a Confederate attempt to halt the Union s advance into the deep South. Though causes of the Union victory at Shiloh may be disputed, the significance of this Battle to the War s outcome is undeniable. Analysis When, Where and Why the Battle of Shiloh Took Place The Battle of Shiloh took place on April 6 7, 1862 (Daniel, 1997, p. 319) in southern Tennessee s Hardin County, particularly at Pittsburg Landing (Groom, 2012, p. 41). The short answer to why this Battle took place is that the Confederacy wanted to stop the Union s advance far into Tennessee and eventually into Mississippi by a surprise attack on Ulysses S. Grant s Army of the Tennessee before Union Major General Don Carlos Buell s Army of the Ohio could arrive and join Grant s forces (Groom, 2012, p. 141). The long answer to why this Battle took place can be found in the two prior Confederate losses at Fort Henry and Fort Donelson in February, 1862, and the consequences of those losses. The captures of Fort Henry and Fort Donelson were the first two Union victories since the beginning of the War on April 12, 1861 (Woodworth, 2011, p. 89). The Union capture of Fort Henry in western Tennessee on February 6, 1862 allowed Union forces to move 12 miles east overland to Fort Donelson ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Donovan Campbell, a New York Times Bestselling author as well as a former Captain of the United States Marine Corps offers unique insight on what it means and what it takes to become a remain a strong leader; in fact, he offers 8 chapters of insight, each one representing a different key concept on leadership. Each concept is different, however each one builds onto one another as the book progresses. While reading this book, I took careful notes on each concept as well as how I could incorporate each one into my own life. The first concept is mission. Campbell says that if we do that then we lose a realistic view of ourselves, which is what humility really is. When trying to think about how this could apply to my current life, the best example I thought of what working on group projects in school. When I thought about Campbell s words and then applied them to that situation, I felt I understood what he was saying. When working in a group, everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. If I know that I could use one of my strengths to help the project, then denying that I could do a good job will only hurt the team in the end. Instead, by utilizing that skill properly, the team will benefit. and having a realistic view of the teams strengths, then we could all use them to help the project. After reading Campbell s chapter on humility, I understood that everyone acknowledging their own strengths and weaknesses is much better than everyone putting themselves down to try to appear humble. The term excellence is daunting. If you asked me, before I read this book, how I could achieve excellence daily, I would have told you simply: I can t. • 5. Summary Of Globalization Globalization Textbook Readings (Chapters 19 20) Chapter nineteen elaborates on the big picture of globalization and discusses the many definitions; contested meanings; and both cultural and economic aspects of the term. In this chapter, the authors argue that defining the term globalization is difficult, and stress the importance of understanding the spatial and temporal aspects that parallel its geographical scope. Furthermore, this chapter emphasizes that globalization is more than understanding global, national, regional, and local relationships; it is also critical to consider the uneven development, networks, flows, and interconnectedness in the world. In Key Concepts of Geography (KCG), chapter twenty discusses aspects of globalization that relate to the physical and environmental sciences. The chapter emphasizes four key themes related to this: (1) the technologies for enhancing scientific knowledge; (2) the role physical geographers and environmental scientists have in the politicization of the environment; (3) the relationship of physical geography with science and related activity; and (4) the historical and contemporary nature of physical geography. Chapter twenty also mentions the globalization syndrome and highlights the relationship between politics, environment, and development; the participation of geography within modern conservation efforts and historical resource exploitation; and the difficulties that geography has had with concepts which integrate a wide range of different knowledge of the world. Both chapters address the broadness of globalization, but chapter twenty stresses that it is not a term which has been frequently applied in the environmental and physical sciences and it certainly has a place there. In contrast to this, chapter nineteen places much emphasis on the social aspects of globalization. While this is a notable difference, both chapters nineteen and twenty do acknowledge temporal and spatial factors, and also the interconnectedness that globalization often attempts to define. During this period, the Puritans in Massachusetts enacted the Old Deluder Act, forcing communities of fifty families or more to establish funds, and operate schools. Many didn t follow the law because they were not privileged as the wealthy communities were; therefore, many poor children remained uneducated unless they were taught by their families. According to Bayer Sampat, (2016), the Land Ordinance of 1875, and the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 were passed requiring areas to establish schools. Thomas Jefferson and Dr. Benjamin Rush spoke in favor of a public education system, unfortunately it wasn t established until the nineteenth century. Moving forward, the United States public schools funding comes from the state, the federal government, and local communities. The appropriation of these funds varies according to several factors; however, the federal government only gives a fraction of these funds compared to the local and state governments. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, in the United States, about 93% is funded via the state and local governments (Bayer Sampat, 2016). The Unified Effect In The Fall Of The House Of Usher During the whole of a dull, dark, and soundless day in the autumn of the year, (412) is the first sentence in The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe. This beginning sentence sets the tone of dark. Gothic Literature s style has elements of fear, horror, gloomy and death; it gives the feeling of suspense and fear. This story is a great example of Gothic Literature. In this story the narrator goes to Usher s house, which is mysterious, and becomes aware that the house is like Usher who is sick. Poe s technique of the unified effect accomplishes its intended purpose through the setting, plot development and imagery. One way Poe accomplished the unified effect was by the way he described the setting. Poe used very descriptive words, Feeble gleams of encrimsoned light made their way through the trellised panes, and served to render sufficiently distinct the more prominent objects, (416). This sentence gives a certain dark tone Poe was achieving. This simply means that a dim, reddened light was shining only on the important objects. The Wolfflin Method compares the two eras in a masterful way that helps one simplify the differences between the Renaissance and Baroque Eras. The Renaissance Era is represented by linear, planar, closed, and multiplicity elements. All of these elements combined to create a crisp painting where lines and shapes are distinguished. The Baroque Era is represented by painterly, recessional, open, and unity elements. These four elements help create a painting that uses shadows to create dimension and depth within the piece giving the viewer an overall sense of unity. The Wolfflin Method assists the viewer in understanding the differences between the Renaissance and Baroque Era. The first painting to be analyzed is The Last Days of Pompeii, by Karl Bryullov. This painting distinctly displays elements from the Baroque Era. Although this painting has a linear element, which comes from the Renaissance Era, it s still Baroque. The white building that is quickly crumbling has clear defined lines with sharp edges. All of the people displaced in the painting also has defined edges and can be differentiated from one another. The only to notice the lovers and stray their attention from life s normal routine are the children, who maintain their innocence, but who soon grow up and forget. Cummings has been noted for this regular indulgence in the themes of love, birth, growth, dying, and their antithesis, (Wegner 48) as found not only in this specific poem playing the parts of the cycle of time but also in many other of his works. The poem is expressing the concrete and paradoxically its opposite through a play on pronouns. Anyone lives in a pretty how town is the story of mostpeople and individuals, simultaneously a joyous and sorrowful song (Turco 93). The title s ambiguity plays on the use of a hypallage: rearrangement of syntax word order in a sentence (Turco 92). The title could be interpreted as either anyone lived in a pretty how town or anyone lived in how pretty a town or how anyone lived in a pretty town. The anyone could be nobody in particular or that particular person capable of love. Because of this, owls need to move their necks in order to be able to see anything. Owls bodies are more flexible than humans, because unlike humans, who have two socket pivots, owls only have one. These birds can fly right above their prey s noses without being spotted, simply because of their wings. Their silentness is due to their unique wings. In other birds, when air flows over their wings, it creates a gushing noise as large areas of air turbulence build up (4). Unlike the other avian creatures, the owl has a way of silencing this gush of air. At the owl s wing edge, there are small bows and hooks that split up rushing air into miniature turbulences (4). These miniature turbulences flow down the wing toward the trailing edge (4). The trailing edge is attached to special, pliable trimming feathers. These feathers split the air even farther as it rolls off the trailing edge, making the flight of the bird almost noiseless. However, if there s the tiniest bit of noise left, it gets absorbed into the down, or short and soft, feathers. Even though the owl is equipped with numerous noise cancelling flight tools, it is still complicated for them to make a catch because their wing has to be at the perfect angle when the bird dives for its prey in order for the special silent feathers to work. In a Democracy it seems entirely contrary to allow a minority to influence the direction of the country, however, that is where we are at. In Madison s Federalist 10, he expresses his concern for the rule of factions and also the rule of the minority. It appears that through institutions like the Senate and the Electoral College we have allowed, to a certain extent, the ability of minorities to sway major decisions. Furthermore, because of our attachment to past institutions that at one point provided a certain service which has now become completely arbitrary, we add to the rule of the minority. The Electoral College at one point provided a service to the nation wherein people would vote their conscious if they felt the Republic was under threat, however, this institution has become entirely arbitrary and unnecessary in the modern day. This institution exhibits the diagnosis given in America in Decay wherein the institution has failed to adapt to changing external circumstances. External circumstances pushed the Electoral College to become a mouthpiece to the people s easily swayed minds. Arguably the Senate did not adapt well to external circumstances as well. External forces pushed the Senate to become more democratic through the 17th ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In order to get what she wants, she uses others to get it for her. She is so obsessed with fame and wealth that she manipulates whoever and whenever with her charm and grace. The protagonist, Carrie, was an intriguing character. She appeared to be very emotional and unstable in her feelings. She was over the moon at certain times of the day and depressed during others, but one thing never changed: the way she felt about money. • 43. The Orson Welles Show Orson Welles career took place in the mid thirties to late eighties in the twentieth century. He began his career at age fifteen, starting in Ireland, making his acting debut in the Gate Theater in Dublin. By eighteen, Welles started to appear in off Broadway productions. It was then that he also launched his radio career. By age twenty, he had presented alternate interpretations of certain well known plays and movies. At age twenty two he was the most notable Broadway star from Mercury Theater and, because of this, BBC radio gave him an hour each week to broadcast whatever he pleased. That s when, at age twenty five, he broadcast War of the Worlds, which caused panic due to the Martian invasions . By the time he came into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His Mercury Theater of the Air also set high and new standards for future radio drama productions. His directing philosophy was that his way was the best way. Welles work was solely self reliant and dependent on his representation of guise. This style/philosophy contributed to the way modern artists presently direct their films and movies. He began his most notable movie, Citizen Kane, with multiple test shots and killed his own character by using a very low angle, as if the viewer was right there, dead, with his character. Welles loved to introduce his films by starting with mysterious, bleak worlds. His main goal was to show future directors that deeply focused camera shots, shadows, askew angles, multiple action points, sound techniques borrowed from radio, and deeply focused shots worked in the favor of the production. Orson Welles didn t just impact the filming realm, but, by being an actor himself, showed that he possessed a very strong standpoint on what an ideal actor was. Orson said that, to him, acting was like a sculpture. It s what you take away from yourself to reveal the truth of what you re doing that makes a performance. A performance deserves to be considered great or important. It s always entirely made up of the actor itself and entirely achieved by what he has left in the dressing room before he came into the camera s view. • 44. Macbeth And Robin Talley s As I Descended By William... Throughout the history of literature, classic tales have been adapted and rewritten by various authors. While this practice is more conspicuously noted in popular culture, it has existed for centuries. For instance, while Gil Junger s 1999 romantic comedy 10 Things I Hate About You is obviously a retelling of William Shakespeare s Taming of the Shrew, Shakespeare s own Romeo and Juliet is an adaptation of Ovid s Pyramus and Thisbe from Metamorphoses. As a result, retellings are only a natural occurrence in literature and can oftentimes convey the basic story in new and exciting ways. On the other hand, retellings can also miss the mark, failing to produce a story that can triumphantly stand on its own as a work of art. For example, Robin Talley s As I Descended is a modern retelling of William Shakespeare s Macbeth, being adapted to fall within the genre of young adult literature. When evaluating As I Descended as a retelling, the characters and basic plot of Macbeth can be identified, but an added underlying story that introduces unnecessary plot points both causes frustration and overcomplicates the novel. In Talley s As I Descended, any reader who possesses background knowledge of Macbeth can easily identify the play s principal characters and overall plot. Without a doubt, Lord and Lady Macbeth are personified by Maria, the story s main protagonist who carries out evil deeds for her own success, and Lily, the mastermind who manipulates Maria, respectively. ...
