Our Secret By Susan Wideman Analysis
Non fiction can be a misleading genre for many because at a young age students are taught that this
word relates solely to biographies, historical events or nature; however, this is very untrue. A vast
variety of prose writings that can be about nearly anything as long as the events, people and facts are
authentic would be considered as non fiction. Two pieces of writing that effectively prove this claim
are Our Secret by Susan Griffin and Our Time by John Edgar Wideman. Each of these essays take a
unique path to emphasize their points whilst keeping their audience on the edge of their seats.
Comparison: While the authors cause confusion for the readers by switching between viewpoints, they
still create an intimate connection between reader ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By utilizing such different introductory sentences, it lures readers in because the ideas presented are
new and unheard of before and the originality is refreshing. The lesson on the nucleus is critical
because it becomes the center of the essay; it is where identity is formed. Every story in Our Secret
relates back to the core idea of identity and how it is formed and shaped. Griffin writes, Like the stone
in a cherry, it is found in the center of the cell, and like this stone, keeps its precious kernel in a shell
(Griffin 233). It demonstrates that the nucleus is a vital part of life because without it, humans would
amount to nothing and our existence would be for naught. The human race revolves around something
so trivial yet so significant. In addition, Wideman s introduction forces readers to face the racial issues
presented in the essay and to understand why it began like this. In his writing, Wideman states, ...their
world is the GHETTO...all the the praise and attention is given to the slick guy (Wideman 422). In the
first paragraph, Wideman attempts to justify and explain the actions of a black man and to ensure

Themes of Sexism in Cleopatra and Plutarch s The Life of...
Similar to the 1963 film Cleopatra, in Plutarch s The Life of Antony, sexism is maintained in the
passage and compatible with its message. Through the author s portrayal of Cleopatra and Antony, he
spreads the message that obsession with power is bad and the idea that manipulation and attempts at
domination are signs of a bad ruler. Sexism is compatible with such messages because as indicated by
Plutarch, Cleopatra utilizes sexist expectations of women in order to manipulate Antony through her
aspirations of domination. Therefore, similar to the films Cleopatra and Quo Vadis, because Cleopatra
is unsuccessful as she commits suicide in the end and is found lying dead upon a golden couch, as
well as is portrayed as an immoral ruler in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Such statements make readers question whether Cleopatra had ever even loved Caesar or Antony or
whether it was fake in order to get power. After reading Plutarch Life of Antony, I began to view
Cleopatra as a manipulative character. Even the statements that some could take as compliments
towards Cleopatra, to me, were insults by the author. For example, when the author states there was
sweetness also in the tones of her voice; and her tongue, like an instrument of many strings, she could
readily turn to whatever language she pleased, so that in her interviews with Barbarians she very
seldom had need of an interpreter, but made her replies to most of them herself and unassisted,
whether they ere Ethiopians, Troglodytes, Hebrews, Arabians, Syrians, Medes or Parthians. Nay, it is
said that she knew the speech of many other peoples also, although the kings of Egypt before her had
not even made an effort to learn the native language, and some actually gave up their Macedonian
dialect. (Plutarch, Life of Antony, 27) Although, it appears as though the author is complimenting
Cleopatra, to me, the author is simply pointing out language as one of her manipulative techniques.
Plutarch appears to blame Cleopatra for Antony s weakness as well when he mentions how she served
as a distraction for Antony for he became fearful lest Cleopatra should throw away her life, and went
back to Alexandria, putting off the Mede until the summer season, although Parthia was

The Transmission Line Cable Model
Thus, components like a mast or bridge girder can be analysed more comprehensively with
compartively with lesser degrees of freedom. Advancement of such basic transmission line cable
models is the concentration of the present work. a simple but efficient model discussed for describing
motion of a vibrating cable utilized in a transmission line [20]. The model has been created for a
transmission line cable with each of the end at a similar height, and by neglecting inertia in the
longitudinal direction. Since the displacement of the every end have been restricted, the model can t
be connected for analysis of cable supported structures. A simple transmission line cable model was
basically created in the present work, which can be used efficiently to determine a different kind of
types of cable structures like suspension bridges , guyed towers , , cable stayed bridges etc . The
dynamic response of the whole} cable used in a structure was defined with the assistance of only nine
degrees of freedom , viz . Three translations at each one end and also three general co ordinates for
demonstrating motion of an middle level on a cable . Due to the fact that the movements of the end
points are considered in the design} , it may be merely utilized with every displacement dependent ,
finite element model .The accurateness of the recent formulation was shown by checking} the free and
forced responses of transmission line cable with accessible} analytical data .

Gas Station
Filling Station by Elizabeth Bishop heavily relies upon diction and word choice to create imagery to
supports the main theme of the poem, which is that love can be found everywhere, even in unlikely
places. In the second stanza of the poem, the author starts to discuss some of the inhabitants of the gas
station. The describes the sons of the station owner as quick and saucy , using words with generally
positive connotations. Quick gives a lively, and thus warm, feeling to the station, and saucy can
literally mean lively when used in this context. Saucy can also inspire the same warm feelings as the
word quick does, if not even more so. Saucy recalls home cooked foods, adding to the overall message
of familiar love to the poem. Another ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Popular perception says that usually a maternal person performs this type of work, and this implies
that there is some maternal presence in the gas station. The idea that there is some maternal presence
is at the station is further supported by the presence of daisies and marguerites found in the doily
itself. These flowers normally have feminine

The Topic Of Sex Trafficking
Introduction
This review of the literature will be about the topic of sex trafficking. My research process involved
searching for information on sex trafficking and also human trafficking as a whole. I investigated a
great deal of different sources and used many websites of organizations dedicated to spreading
awareness on sex trafficking and working toward hindering it. I also researched using non fiction
books regarding sex trafficking, including works sharing the experiences of real victims and survivors
of trafficking. A common frustration that I had when researching was finding sources with accurate
information pertaining the male victims of sex trafficking. Since Male victims of trafficking
commonly go unseen, unheard and forgotten, this information was a bit more difficult to find. Some
themes that arouse during my research process were background information, the global problem,
victims, effects, and solutions. Some questions that drove my research process were: How do
traffickers lure their victims in?, Who are the most common victims of sex trafficking?, Where does
sex trafficking happen?, and How can sex trafficking being stopped?
Background Information The modern day slavery, that is what many people will refer to sex
trafficking as. Sex trafficking is defined as the act of forcing, coercing, or conning an individual into
performing any sexual act. (Behnke, 2015 Shared Hope, 2016) The term sexual act can be very broad
and include many activities. These

Tree Octopuses Research Paper
In the Pacific Northwest on the Eastern side of the Olympic mountain range there can be found an
animal that you would normally think would be found in the waters of the oceans, but here they are in
trees, this is where you can find the Tree Octopus. They can be found on the Northwest side of the
United States in on the Eastern side of the Olympic mountain range, adjacent from the Hood Canal.
They live in this area because of the moistness of the trees and how their skin is they are able to easily
adapt to the conditions of the rainforest. They also have the largest brain to body ratio compared to
any mollusk of its kind (Zapato). Theses tree octopuses have some similarities to humans and

Egoism Vs Altruism
Egoism and Altruism are two ideas widely known in philosophy as two opposing ideas based on the
actions of individuals. Egoists believe that act for their own self interest. Altruists believe that
individuals act for the welfare of others. These two ideas highlight the differences between two
extreme natures. People by nature are egoists. This will be proven by exploring philosophers such as
Ayn Rand, Thomas Hobbes, Henry Sidgwick and their theories on egoism involving rational and
ethical egoism. Additionally, it will be proven using philosophers such as Derek Parfit and Jean
Jacques Rosseau who criticize these ideas, but are ultimately wrong.
There has been much controversy around the ideas of egoism and altruism as many philosophers have

Descriptive Essay About A Wedding
Growing up, one of my favorite movies to watch was Cinderella. It shows a classic fairy tale wedding
that almost every girl, including me, fantasizes about. Fortunately for me, I was given an opportunity
to be a part of one. It was 8 o clock in the morning on a fresh fall day. My mom and I arrived at Ulta
Beauty to meet with my sister to get our hair and makeup done. As soon as we walked in I could smell
the hairspray and saw all the makeup we had to choose from. I choose to do a classic bun with a braid
while my sister chose to do a loose bun with hair framing her face. For our makeup, we both chose to
do a classic fall, but light look. This consisted of using Clinique foundation with a light orange
eyeshadow and finishing the look with fake eyelashes. Our next task of the day was to meet at the
Best Western Hotel in New Ulm to get ready. I put on my bridesmaid dress and assisted my sister with
any final touch ups. She stepped into her cinderella, lace, full, cream colored ball gown and I laced her
up. My eyes have never seen anything more gorgeous than her. She glistened like snow on a sunny
day. To get more natural and clear looking photos, the wedding party headed downstairs to a room
with natural lighting to set up for pictures. Kara stood by the window while we all took turns fixing
her veil, or buttoning her dress, all while pictures were being taken. After an hour or so, we all made
our way down to German Park, where the wedding would take place. The park was

In the Introduction to Free Will Robert Kane explains freedom of will is having nothing preventing a
person from making their own choice or decision with full freedom (6). There is an inevitable relation
between accountability, free will, and personal responsibility. According to free will, individuals are
able to make their own decision regardless of outside or higher powers. Therefore, free will would
make Cosby accountable for his actions because he chose to commit the crime and was not force to by
external powers.
On the other hand, hard determinist would support determinism to explain why an individual is not
personally responsible for their actions. Kane explained that there is freedom to make choices but the
choices made are in fact manipulated by other factors (2). Determinism is the belief that all events are
fate bound and everything that happens is because other forces are at play. Determinism is the only
possible thing that could happen and they only happen because it is how they are meant to be.

Landing the Helicopter of Hovering Moms Essay
Parents usually have the best intentions like protecting their children from life s hardships and
preparing them for adulthood. However as with many other aspects of parenting, the results do not
always match the intentions. Overprotective parents generally want to protect their children from
harm, hurt, pain, failure, unhappiness, bad experiences, rejection, and disappointment (Lindsey 1).
However, parents must realize that overprotective parenting has certain side effects. Parents believe
that they are doing a favor for their children by keeping them safe without realizing that this parenting
style can have severe effects on children such as robbing children of the essential life skills that they
need in order to have a healthy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As an adult, he might find it hard to take care of himself because he never developed coping skills to
deal with life s challenges (Agadoni 3). This causes a child to be dependent on his or her parents; it
creates the illusion that no matter what the situation, mommy or daddy will be there to fix it. This
mind set is extremely crippling because eventually children leave the nest and venture out in life
without the capability dealing with situations by themselves.
Helicopter parents often send the unintentional message to their child saying that they are incompetent
of doing things on their own like the things they attempt to accomplish independently are wrong.
Instead of letting their children experience a sense of autonomy by allowing them to accomplish
things on their own, an overprotective parent would step in and take control; again promoting
dependency. A lot of times, such dependency carries on into adulthood (Sade 1). Instead of being a
mature, responsible adult and taking things into their own hands; they call on their parents whenever
things get strenuous in their lives. Likewise, adults who still depend on their parents for everything do
not mature mentally and sometimes do not have the skills needed to become successful on their own.
For statistical understanding, the graph above shows the percentage of parents who admitted to
helping their adolescent and

Most people would rather learn how to cope with certain issues on their own. Behavior therapy is
pretty effective in teaching people how to cope with some of life s common problems. Some selected
problem areas that behavior therapy is particularly effective in is anxiety disorders, depression,
substance abuse, eating disorders, domestic violence, sexual deviance, pain management, and
hypertension (Corey, 2005, p. 228). The therapy sessions are well defined and procedural. Both the
therapist and the client have clearly defined roles, and the importance of client awareness and
participation in the therapeutic process is stressed. The therapist teaches concrete skills to the client
utilizing instruction, modeling, and performance feedback (Corey, 2005, p. 235). According to the
text, the client engages in rehearsal with feedback until skills are well learned. The client also often
receives homework assignments to complete between therapy sessions (Corey, 2005, p. 235). In order
for therapy to be successful, the client must be fully cooperative and motivated to change and fully
carry out therapeutic activities. If the clients are not involved in this way, then chances are slim that
therapy will be successful (Corey, 2005, p. 235). References Corey, G. (2005). Theory and practice of

Steps Involved In Muscle Contraction
There are many steps involved in muscle contraction. The first being where the action potential starts
in the brain and travels to the muscle where it meets at the neuromuscular junction. This is where a
chemical synapse is formed. The motor neuron from the brain connects with the muscle fiber.
Acetylcholine is a chemical neurotransmitter used at the neuromuscular junction that the motor
neurons of the nervous system release in order to activate muscles causing contraction. There are
diseases that wreak havoc on the connection at the neuromuscular junction; tetanus, botulism, and
myasthenia gravis.

While droopy eyelids and difficulty swallowing are also common symptoms in diseases caused by the
toxins mentioned above. And while the neuromuscular junction and acetylcholen are also affected in
this disease as with tetanus and botulism, there is a difference in they effect they have. With
myasthenia gravis the receptors that receive the neurotransmitter acetylcholine at the neuromuscular
junction are blocked or destroyed by the body s own immune system. This, rather than causing
constriction of muscles when there is excessive neurotransmitter created, there is actually weakness.
(NIH 2016) Categorized as an autoimmune disease it is an acquired immunological abnormality, but it
not considered genetic. It is worsened by stress, sickness (especially viral respiratory illness),
pregnancy, hypo/hyperthyroidism. (Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America 2015) This disease is
often over looked as weakness is a common ailment from the flu, to syndromes, to simply being
overworked or poor sleep. The symptoms can also come and go and may fluctuate in severity. People
already tend to be poor historians when it comes to their own health and this simply makes that even

 Resource Sharing Computer resources can be shared in the network such as the printer, scanner,
modem etc. This allows us to track down the uses of resources. For example, a network administrator
can set up a printer server and share it in the network. Then the user can use printer server for printing.
Now administrator needs only to monitor the print server instead of individual workstations. This is
economically better.  Application Sharing Application sharing is the most common in companies.
Companies may have a business application that needs to be updated by several users. Sharing make it
possible. It allows several users to work together on a single application.  Economic benefits With
computer networking, you can use a lot of software and hardware available on the market which can
just be stored or installed on a server and can be used by various workstations. Dis Advantage: 
Need of Technicians The network should be checked frequently monitored for good performance and
no problems on its physical and logical component. The expert technicians are required to do so it cost
a lot of money to hire them for all time  Network failure If any server like the file, print etc. fail then
the whole network is affected. If any hardware fails the nodes cannot be used.  Expensive It is
expensive to build and run the network. Expensive hardware like a router, cables, hub,

Essay On Flag Desecration
The flag of the United States of America isn t only just a piece of cloth, it is a symbol of hope and
freedom that represents our entire nation and the brave men and women who serve to protect it. As
American citizens, we must protect our flag from any harm. I love my flag, and the country that it
represents, but I know as much as anyone that America isn t perfect. That is why if I believe that
something is wrong or needs to be changed in our country, then I can speak up, I can protest, I can
make my elected officials hear my voice and listen to what I have to say. It is my constitutional right
and a blessing to do so; but using the flag as a torch is a form of protest that should be illegal, and that
I will not tolerate. It is our duty as American citizens to protect the flag and remind everyone of the
freedoms and liberties that it represents. The American Flag is a symbol of hope and freedom in our
country. It glides high, reminding us of the freedoms that we have. It gives hope to all of life, liberty,

Prestige Telephone Company Case Study
In April 2003, Daniel Rowe, president of Prestige Telephone Company, was preparing for a meeting
with Susan Bradley, Manager of Prestige Data Services, a company subsidiary. Partial deregulation
and an agreement with the state Public Service Commission had permitted Prestige Telephone to
establish a computer data service subsidiary to perform data processing for the telephone company
and to sell computer service to other companies and organizations. Mr. Rowe had told the commission
in 1999 that a profitable computer services subsidiary would reduce pressure for telephone rate

All accounts of Prestige Data Services were separated from those of Prestige Telephone, and each paid
the other for services received from the other.
From the start of operations of Prestige Data Services in 2000 there had been problems. Equipment
deliveries were delayed. Personnel had commanded higher salaries than expected. And most
important, customers were harder to find than earlier estimates had led the company to expect. By the
end of 2002, when income of Prestige Telephone was low enough to necessitate a report to
shareholders revealing the lowest return on investment in seven years, Rowe felt it was time to
reassess Prestige Data Services. Susan Bradley asked for more time, as she felt the subsidiary would
be profitable by March. But when the quarterly reports came (Exhibits 1 and 2), Rowe called Bradley
to arrange their meeting.
Rowe received two reports on operations of Prestige Data Services. The Summary of Computer

Analysis Of Lord Of The Flies And Hunger Games By...
The concept of civil culture is one often glorified within society, yet its power depends wholly on the
ethical nature of those who uphold it. The novels, Lord of The Flies by William Golding and The
Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, demonstrate this prospect as through the narrative techniques of
characterisation, plot, setting and style, they exemplify the moral decline of man under pressure to
survive, ultimately resulting in savagery. Characterisation plays a major role in both texts as each
character serves as a representation humanity and the faults within it. Throughout Lord of the Flies
there is a developing inequality among the characters as social order is established based on the
strength and ability of each. Consequently the weakest of those characters are placed at the mercy of
the strongest, in essence giving them the power that motivates their transformation from well
mannered British boys to unrestrained savages. Likewise inequality is demonstrated to the same extent
within the Hunger Games as the weaker, less experienced tributes are hunted by the Careers , a pack
of brutal children who become natural and effective killers. Throughout both novels, the characters
place great significance on appearance, as how they are perceived by others factors into their survival.
In The Hunger Games a certain appearance wins the support of sponsors, who may well mean the
difference between life and death, If you appeal to the crowd,

That is why it is time for a change. That is why it is time for qualified people and people who want to
be role models to be given a chance to be role models. Athletes such as Charles Barkley have
recognized this need for a change. Dave Winfield, a former major league baseball player with such
teams as the New York Yankees and the former California Angels, recognizes this need for a change.
He believes that athletes should not be the primary role models in a child s life. Instead parents, not
athletes, entertainers or politicians, should claim the position of being a role model (Berlow 31). This
statement not only speaks for itself, but it also poses an interesting question. If athletes themselves
continue to declare themselves ineligible to be a role model, then why do people continually allow
their children to admire these athletes for more than his/her sports abilities? At this point in time, the
parents should know better. Parents would not allow their kids to admire some hoodlum on the street,
but because sports are in a controlled atmosphere, they do not see the dangers in athletes being role
models. As Charles Barkley puts it, There are a million guys in jail who can play ball. Should they be
role models? Of course not (Berlow 35). Yet, many parents do not realize or do not want to admit that
many athletes have a good amount of time on the other side of the law. The big message here is that

This past weekend witnessed a trifecta of momentous anniversaries. Katrina happened 5 years ago,
Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his I Have a Dream Speech on the Washington Mall 47 years ago,
and Mother Teresa was born a century ago.
Monday: Katrina; Tuesday: I Have a Dream; Today: Mother Teresa
After spending a great deal of time on and devoting a good deal of space to the two previous subjects
in this series on recent anniversaries, 2005 s devastating Hurricane Katrina and the world changing

The Battle of Philippi was the last fought battle of the wars of the second Triumvirate. These wars

forces of Marcus Junius Brutus and Gaius Cassius Longinus. Brutus and Cassius were the
assassinators of Julius Caesar, Marc Antony and Octavian were very close allies with Julius Caesar
and Octavian would become the heir to his throne after the assassination. Because of this, Marc
Antony and Octavian would wage a war against Brutus and Cassius to avenge their ally Julius Caesar.

With the arrival of Republican admiral Gnaeus Domitus Ahenobarbus, communications back to Italy
were made very difficult because of the large fleet of ships that he brought with him which blockaded
the triumvirate. These fleets of the Liberators did not wish to engage in a physical battle with the
Triumvirate, but only to block their communications with their supply base back in Italy. With this
swarming fleet they were able to outflank the Triumvirate and set up their own defensive positions
forcing Norbanus and Saxa to retreat from their positions moving west giving the Liberators the upper
hand at this spot. Brutus and Cassius were able to gain position on the Via Egnatia on each side with
this fleet. To the north and south were impassable marshes and mountains. Brutus and Cassius then
split their forces each manning a North and South defensive position of the Via Egnatia. After arriving
to the scene, Marc Antony put his troops to the south while Octavian put his troops to the north,
preparing for battle with the Liberators. Marcus Junius Brutus was always known in history as being
too soft of a general. Although he had little successful battle victories in Thrace and Lycia, he had
always been judged as being lacking in authority when it came to the generalship of his troops.
Because of this, Brutus was commonly referred to as a statesman than a military commander. The

They included in the book the real life example of Dr. Bob Pyle, who had stress induced disseminated

experienced vast improvement in his disease over the course of time, an occurrence that shocked his
physician (Hatey Hagerman, 2008, p. 81). This story motivated me to want to consistently incorporate
regular exercise into my own life in hopes of reducing stress, and, thereby, lowering my risk of
disease.
Aging
With aging come numerous changes within the human body. Yet as a nurse, I see more of the
devastating effects that aging has on the brain. Patients can have perfectly strong bodies yet be
incapacitated with cognitive decline. Ratey and Hagerman (2008) discussed an interesting study using
mice that had been genetically modified to be more likely to develop Alzheimer s

The Drummer Boy Of Shiloh
Learning History in Different Ways Exasperating can describe the way siblings fight. They both have
a different side of the story and different information from the situation. The constant back and forth
of who is right. Not to mention, some kind of justification or maybe a different approach is happens a
lot between siblings. The same way siblings may fight connects to the topic of learning history
through literature compared to informational text. The way two authors may write or how they see
something is just one way informational text and literature text can be different. In the fictional story
The Drummer Boy of Shiloh by Ray Bradbury, Joby an young 14 year old drummer boy is a run away.
Also in the informational text, Battle of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As an example from The Drummer Boy of Shiloh by Ray Bradbury, In the April night, more than
once, blossoms fell from the orchard trees and lit with rustling tops on the drumskin. At Midnight a
peach stone left miraculously on a branch through winter flickered by a bird, fell swift and unseen.
Struck once like panic, which jerked the boy upright (Bradbury 318). Already stated from the text is
how the literature information is not accurate. Nothing from this is facts from the Civil war.
Throughout the text it tells a story from that time and what it could be like, the actual story does not
have the basic facts as would a informational text would. On the other hand, from an informational
text, Battle of Shiloh , The Battle of Shiloh began at sunrise on April 6, 1862 the Sabbath as 44,000
Confederate soldiers swooped down on an unsuspecting Union Army encampment near Pittsburgh
Landing, a nondescript hog and cotton steamboat dock on the Tennessee River. This is a clear fact
with numbers involved. So this tells the reader what was going on and does not have any made up
people to fill in the story. It is just simply what had happened. So all in all when comparing two texts
one from literature and and informational text they differ in how the reader can learn about the

Left Ventricular Hypertrophy
Left ventricular hypertrophy is defined as the increase in muscle mass of the left ventricle; It can be
hypertrophy of the muscle leading to a systolic HVG or a dilation of the muscle leading to diastolic
HVG. The diagnosis is suspected on the ECG and confirmed by ultrasound.
Among the causes of left ventricular hypertrophy are age, intensive practice of one or more sports,
obesity, prolonged hypertension.
The seriousness of hypertension arises from its impact on a number of organs (target organs). The
complications that can develop at their level explain the increased morbidity and mortality associated
with hypertension. The heart is one of the main target organs, and one of the first consequences of
elevated blood pressure (PA) is left ventricular

Central Park In The 19th Century
Our day was coming to an end but we had made just one last stop to Central Park. Around the 19th
century the city had doubled in size and it was developing into the city we know today. Immigrants
were forced to move into tenement buildings and the city began to see an influx of people in the
streets. The city realized it was time for the city to change and so they bought 700 acres from 58th to
106th Street in order to create a new park. We began our stroll around the park and visited the
Conservatory Garden. The garden is known to be the only formal garden in the park. The garden is
also divided up into three distinct formal gardens: English, French, and Italian style. We had a chance
to visit the English style garden. The garden was absolutely

The Role Of Women During History Throughout The 20th Century
The role of women in history has changed dramatically over time, especially in the past century. Most
of the time, she is presented as a victim of society, helpless and hopeless. Blamed and accused of
being the root of all the problems. She is often sidelined because of being a confused being, not
knowing what she wants and at the same time, she is the center of attention and the subject of man s
fantasy (the male gaze). History is full of evidence and stories of violence against women, who are
subject to the cruel tortures in the male dominate society. It was not until the 20th century when
women got the right to vote after several years of protests and movements. It is of great interest to me
to notice, observe and analyze what the role ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Piano is the story of a woman an artist, who is the victim of society. Ada McGrath, the mute
pianist, who is already the mother of a little girl, is married to a man who she has never seen. She is
dropped at the coast of New Zealand unwillingly and spends the night in the little hut she and her
daughter had made. Next morning, her husband and his men come to take them home. She has her
piano with her too but that is not carried as her husband claims they do not have enough men as she
had a bunch of suitcases with them already. One thing to be noted is that when Ada McGrath appeared
for the first time in front of his new husband, he gave a slight repulsive or disapproving look. Later in
the scene, he is seen asking his friend What do you think? to which his friend tells him she looks tired.
Until this moment, Ada has been denied her wish twice. She is dropped at the coast against her wish,
and her husband leaves her piano at the coast even though she insisted. On the top of that, she has
been judged as a property and an object. Clearly, she is not like what her husband had expected. He
must have expected a more beautiful and young wife and therefore he looked a bit disappointed.
The story continues and the piano is left at the coast and the newly formed family reaches home
making their way through the deep mud and woods. On reaching her new home, she is seen not
adjusting in the new family and their ways. She remains quiet all the

MADDOX V. MONTGOMERY United States Courts of Appeals, Eleventh Circuit 718 F.2d 1033
(11th Cir. 1983) Facts:
Jimmy Maddox was convicted of rape in a Georgia state court and sentenced to life imprisonment.
Having unsuccessfully pursued his direct appeal and the state post conviction remedy, Maddox filed a
federal habeas corpus petition alleging prosecutorial suppression of exculpatory evidence in violation
of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Maddox had appealed the denial of habeas relief.
Decision of the Court:
The United States Court of appeals ruled that the suppressed evidence is purely impeaching evidence
and no defense request has been made, the suppressed evidence is material only if its introduction
probably would have resulted in acquittal. Given a minor role of Phillips testimony and the limited
impact that Phelps statement had on the jury s assessment of Phillips credibility, Maddox could not
demonstrate that so the evidence probably would have resulted in an acquittal. Also, the evidence was
immaterial under United States V.Blasco; the defendant filed a joint motion to suppress all physical
evidence gathered by the officers and any statements made by the defendant. The magistrate found
that the defendant did not have to raise a fourth amendment challenge and its suppression did not
violate his (Maddox s) due process right. For ongoing reasons, the district court s dismissal of Maddox
s habeas petition was affirmed.
Reasoning of the Court:
The United States Court of Appeals first determined that Brady doctrine did not apply because the
Maddox defense team had not requested the information be disclosed. It was only after unsuccessfully
pursuing his direct appeal did he bring up this post conviction habeas corpus petition. In the United
States v. Agurs the Court stated that such a failure to

Broken Windows Theory
Broken Windows Theory When George L. Kelling and James Q. Wilson first proclaimed the Broken
Windows Theory, it states that maintaining an orderly environment law enforcement needs to enforce
a zero tolerance policy on disreputable people who commit small crimes like public drinking and
vandalism, thereby ultimately prevent bigger crimes from occurring. In the mid 70 s Newark, New
Jersey had implemented aspects of the Broken Windows Theory in order to improve the quality of
community life. By having police officers patrolling the city on foot instead of driving, they hoped it
will reduce crime rates. There was no difference in the way people committed crimes rather police are
patrolling on foot or in vehicles (Cullen, 498 499). The program

  • 2. Our Secret By Susan Wideman Analysis Non fiction can be a misleading genre for many because at a young age students are taught that this word relates solely to biographies, historical events or nature; however, this is very untrue. A vast variety of prose writings that can be about nearly anything as long as the events, people and facts are authentic would be considered as non fiction. Two pieces of writing that effectively prove this claim are Our Secret by Susan Griffin and Our Time by John Edgar Wideman. Each of these essays take a unique path to emphasize their points whilst keeping their audience on the edge of their seats. Comparison: While the authors cause confusion for the readers by switching between viewpoints, they still create an intimate connection between reader ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By utilizing such different introductory sentences, it lures readers in because the ideas presented are new and unheard of before and the originality is refreshing. The lesson on the nucleus is critical because it becomes the center of the essay; it is where identity is formed. Every story in Our Secret relates back to the core idea of identity and how it is formed and shaped. Griffin writes, Like the stone in a cherry, it is found in the center of the cell, and like this stone, keeps its precious kernel in a shell (Griffin 233). It demonstrates that the nucleus is a vital part of life because without it, humans would amount to nothing and our existence would be for naught. The human race revolves around something so trivial yet so significant. In addition, Wideman s introduction forces readers to face the racial issues presented in the essay and to understand why it began like this. In his writing, Wideman states, ...their world is the GHETTO...all the the praise and attention is given to the slick guy (Wideman 422). In the first paragraph, Wideman attempts to justify and explain the actions of a black man and to ensure ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Themes of Sexism in Cleopatra and Plutarch s The Life of... Similar to the 1963 film Cleopatra, in Plutarch s The Life of Antony, sexism is maintained in the passage and compatible with its message. Through the author s portrayal of Cleopatra and Antony, he spreads the message that obsession with power is bad and the idea that manipulation and attempts at domination are signs of a bad ruler. Sexism is compatible with such messages because as indicated by Plutarch, Cleopatra utilizes sexist expectations of women in order to manipulate Antony through her aspirations of domination. Therefore, similar to the films Cleopatra and Quo Vadis, because Cleopatra is unsuccessful as she commits suicide in the end and is found lying dead upon a golden couch, as well as is portrayed as an immoral ruler in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Such statements make readers question whether Cleopatra had ever even loved Caesar or Antony or whether it was fake in order to get power. After reading Plutarch Life of Antony, I began to view Cleopatra as a manipulative character. Even the statements that some could take as compliments towards Cleopatra, to me, were insults by the author. For example, when the author states there was sweetness also in the tones of her voice; and her tongue, like an instrument of many strings, she could readily turn to whatever language she pleased, so that in her interviews with Barbarians she very seldom had need of an interpreter, but made her replies to most of them herself and unassisted, whether they ere Ethiopians, Troglodytes, Hebrews, Arabians, Syrians, Medes or Parthians. Nay, it is said that she knew the speech of many other peoples also, although the kings of Egypt before her had not even made an effort to learn the native language, and some actually gave up their Macedonian dialect. (Plutarch, Life of Antony, 27) Although, it appears as though the author is complimenting Cleopatra, to me, the author is simply pointing out language as one of her manipulative techniques. Plutarch appears to blame Cleopatra for Antony s weakness as well when he mentions how she served as a distraction for Antony for he became fearful lest Cleopatra should throw away her life, and went back to Alexandria, putting off the Mede until the summer season, although Parthia was ... Advancement of such basic transmission line cable models is the concentration of the present work. a simple but efficient model discussed for describing motion of a vibrating cable utilized in a transmission line [20]. The model has been created for a transmission line cable with each of the end at a similar height, and by neglecting inertia in the longitudinal direction. Since the displacement of the every end have been restricted, the model can t be connected for analysis of cable supported structures. • 5. Gas Station Filling Station by Elizabeth Bishop heavily relies upon diction and word choice to create imagery to supports the main theme of the poem, which is that love can be found everywhere, even in unlikely places. In the second stanza of the poem, the author starts to discuss some of the inhabitants of the gas station. The describes the sons of the station owner as quick and saucy , using words with generally positive connotations. Quick gives a lively, and thus warm, feeling to the station, and saucy can literally mean lively when used in this context. Saucy can also inspire the same warm feelings as the word quick does, if not even more so. Saucy recalls home cooked foods, adding to the overall message of familiar love to the poem. Another ... • 6. The Topic Of Sex Trafficking Introduction This review of the literature will be about the topic of sex trafficking. My research process involved searching for information on sex trafficking and also human trafficking as a whole. I investigated a great deal of different sources and used many websites of organizations dedicated to spreading awareness on sex trafficking and working toward hindering it. I also researched using non fiction books regarding sex trafficking, including works sharing the experiences of real victims and survivors of trafficking. A common frustration that I had when researching was finding sources with accurate information pertaining the male victims of sex trafficking. Since Male victims of trafficking commonly go unseen, unheard and forgotten, this information was a bit more difficult to find. Some themes that arouse during my research process were background information, the global problem, victims, effects, and solutions. Some questions that drove my research process were: How do traffickers lure their victims in?, Who are the most common victims of sex trafficking?, Where does sex trafficking happen?, and How can sex trafficking being stopped? Background Information The modern day slavery, that is what many people will refer to sex trafficking as. Sex trafficking is defined as the act of forcing, coercing, or conning an individual into performing any sexual act. Altruists believe that individuals act for the welfare of others. These two ideas highlight the differences between two extreme natures. People by nature are egoists. This will be proven by exploring philosophers such as Ayn Rand, Thomas Hobbes, Henry Sidgwick and their theories on egoism involving rational and ethical egoism. Additionally, it will be proven using philosophers such as Derek Parfit and Jean Jacques Rosseau who criticize these ideas, but are ultimately wrong. • 9. Descriptive Essay About A Wedding Growing up, one of my favorite movies to watch was Cinderella. It shows a classic fairy tale wedding that almost every girl, including me, fantasizes about. Fortunately for me, I was given an opportunity to be a part of one. It was 8 o clock in the morning on a fresh fall day. My mom and I arrived at Ulta Beauty to meet with my sister to get our hair and makeup done. As soon as we walked in I could smell the hairspray and saw all the makeup we had to choose from. I choose to do a classic bun with a braid while my sister chose to do a loose bun with hair framing her face. For our makeup, we both chose to do a classic fall, but light look. This consisted of using Clinique foundation with a light orange eyeshadow and finishing the look with fake eyelashes. Our next task of the day was to meet at the Best Western Hotel in New Ulm to get ready. I put on my bridesmaid dress and assisted my sister with any final touch ups. She stepped into her cinderella, lace, full, cream colored ball gown and I laced her up. My eyes have never seen anything more gorgeous than her. She glistened like snow on a sunny day. To get more natural and clear looking photos, the wedding party headed downstairs to a room with natural lighting to set up for pictures. Kara stood by the window while we all took turns fixing her veil, or buttoning her dress, all while pictures were being taken. Therefore, free will would make Cosby accountable for his actions because he chose to commit the crime and was not force to by external powers. On the other hand, hard determinist would support determinism to explain why an individual is not personally responsible for their actions. However as with many other aspects of parenting, the results do not always match the intentions. Overprotective parents generally want to protect their children from harm, hurt, pain, failure, unhappiness, bad experiences, rejection, and disappointment (Lindsey 1). However, parents must realize that overprotective parenting has certain side effects. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As an adult, he might find it hard to take care of himself because he never developed coping skills to deal with life s challenges (Agadoni 3). This causes a child to be dependent on his or her parents; it creates the illusion that no matter what the situation, mommy or daddy will be there to fix it. This mind set is extremely crippling because eventually children leave the nest and venture out in life without the capability dealing with situations by themselves. Helicopter parents often send the unintentional message to their child saying that they are incompetent of doing things on their own like the things they attempt to accomplish independently are wrong. Instead of letting their children experience a sense of autonomy by allowing them to accomplish things on their own, an overprotective parent would step in and take control; again promoting dependency. A lot of times, such dependency carries on into adulthood (Sade 1). Instead of being a mature, responsible adult and taking things into their own hands; they call on their parents whenever things get strenuous in their lives. Likewise, adults who still depend on their parents for everything do not mature mentally and sometimes do not have the skills needed to become successful on their own. Behavior therapy is pretty effective in teaching people how to cope with some of life s common problems. Some selected problem areas that behavior therapy is particularly effective in is anxiety disorders, depression, substance abuse, eating disorders, domestic violence, sexual deviance, pain management, and hypertension (Corey, 2005, p. 228). The therapy sessions are well defined and procedural. Both the therapist and the client have clearly defined roles, and the importance of client awareness and participation in the therapeutic process is stressed. The therapist teaches concrete skills to the client utilizing instruction, modeling, and performance feedback (Corey, 2005, p. 235). According to the text, the client engages in rehearsal with feedback until skills are well learned. The client also often receives homework assignments to complete between therapy sessions (Corey, 2005, p. 235). In order for therapy to be successful, the client must be fully cooperative and motivated to change and fully carry out therapeutic activities. Acetylcholine is a chemical neurotransmitter used at the neuromuscular junction that the motor neurons of the nervous system release in order to activate muscles causing contraction. Essay On Flag Desecration The flag of the United States of America isn t only just a piece of cloth, it is a symbol of hope and freedom that represents our entire nation and the brave men and women who serve to protect it. As American citizens, we must protect our flag from any harm. I love my flag, and the country that it represents, but I know as much as anyone that America isn t perfect. That is why if I believe that something is wrong or needs to be changed in our country, then I can speak up, I can protest, I can make my elected officials hear my voice and listen to what I have to say. It is my constitutional right and a blessing to do so; but using the flag as a torch is a form of protest that should be illegal, and that I will not tolerate. It is our duty as American citizens to protect the flag and remind everyone of the freedoms and liberties that it represents. The American Flag is a symbol of hope and freedom in our country. • 17. Analysis Of Lord Of The Flies And Hunger Games By... The concept of civil culture is one often glorified within society, yet its power depends wholly on the ethical nature of those who uphold it. The novels, Lord of The Flies by William Golding and The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, demonstrate this prospect as through the narrative techniques of characterisation, plot, setting and style, they exemplify the moral decline of man under pressure to survive, ultimately resulting in savagery. Characterisation plays a major role in both texts as each character serves as a representation humanity and the faults within it. Throughout Lord of the Flies there is a developing inequality among the characters as social order is established based on the strength and ability of each. Consequently the weakest of those characters are placed at the mercy of the strongest, in essence giving them the power that motivates their transformation from well mannered British boys to unrestrained savages. Likewise inequality is demonstrated to the same extent within the Hunger Games as the weaker, less experienced tributes are hunted by the Careers , a pack of brutal children who become natural and effective killers. Throughout both novels, the characters place great significance on appearance, as how they are perceived by others factors into their survival. In The Hunger Games a certain appearance wins the support of sponsors, who may well mean the difference between life and death, If you appeal to the crowd, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 18. Essay on The Importance of Good Role Models The Importance of Good Role Models Charles Barkley stands in a dimly lit gym with a basketball squeezed between his beefy hands. He is only filming a commercial. Or is he? As he looks squarely into the camera, he declares, I am not a role model...I am paid to wreak havoc on the basketball court (Smith 1). After he says this, a question begins to form in the minds of the viewers. Who, then Charles, should be a role model? Now, just because this is a commercial for a basketball shoe does not mean Charles Barkley does not have a reply floating around in that shiny bald head of his. He retorts, Parents should be role models. Just because I dunk a basketball, doesn t mean I should raise your kids (1). Whether many people care ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... That is why it is time for a change. That is why it is time for qualified people and people who want to be role models to be given a chance to be role models. Athletes such as Charles Barkley have recognized this need for a change. Dave Winfield, a former major league baseball player with such teams as the New York Yankees and the former California Angels, recognizes this need for a change. He believes that athletes should not be the primary role models in a child s life. Instead parents, not athletes, entertainers or politicians, should claim the position of being a role model (Berlow 31). This statement not only speaks for itself, but it also poses an interesting question. If athletes themselves continue to declare themselves ineligible to be a role model, then why do people continually allow their children to admire these athletes for more than his/her sports abilities? At this point in time, the parents should know better. Parents would not allow their kids to admire some hoodlum on the street, but because sports are in a controlled atmosphere, they do not see the dangers in athletes being role models. As Charles Barkley puts it, There are a million guys in jail who can play ball. Should they be role models? Of course not (Berlow 35). Yet, many parents do not realize or do not want to admit that many athletes have a good amount of time on the other side of the law. The big message here is that being a ... These wars were a fight between the forces of Marc Antony and Octavian of the Second Triumvirate, and the forces of Marcus Junius Brutus and Gaius Cassius Longinus. Brutus and Cassius were the assassinators of Julius Caesar, Marc Antony and Octavian were very close allies with Julius Caesar and Octavian would become the heir to his throne after the assassination. Because of this, Marc Antony and Octavian would wage a war against Brutus and Cassius to avenge their ally Julius Caesar. With the arrival of Republican admiral Gnaeus Domitus Ahenobarbus, communications back to Italy were made very difficult because of the large fleet of ships that he brought with him which blockaded the triumvirate. These fleets of the Liberators did not wish to engage in a physical battle with the Triumvirate, but only to block their communications with their supply base back in Italy. With this swarming fleet they were able to outflank the Triumvirate and set up their own defensive positions forcing Norbanus and Saxa to retreat from their positions moving west giving the Liberators the upper hand at this spot. Brutus and Cassius were able to gain position on the Via Egnatia on each side with this fleet. To the north and south were impassable marshes and mountains. Brutus and Cassius then split their forces each manning a North and South defensive position of the Via Egnatia. After arriving to the scene, Marc Antony put his troops to the south while Octavian put his troops to the north, preparing for battle with the Liberators. Marcus Junius Brutus was always known in history as being too soft of a general. Although he had little successful battle victories in Thrace and Lycia, he had always been judged as being lacking in authority when it came to the generalship of his troops. Because of this, Brutus was commonly referred to as a statesman than a military commander. The other Liberator commander, Gaius ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Decision of the Court: The United States Court of appeals ruled that the suppressed evidence is purely impeaching evidence and no defense request has been made, the suppressed evidence is material only if its introduction probably would have resulted in acquittal. Given a minor role of Phillips testimony and the limited impact that Phelps statement had on the jury s assessment of Phillips credibility, Maddox could not demonstrate that so the evidence probably would have resulted in an acquittal. Also, the evidence was immaterial under United States V.Blasco; the defendant filed a joint motion to suppress all physical evidence gathered by the officers and any statements made by the defendant. The magistrate found that the defendant did not have to raise a fourth amendment challenge and its suppression did not violate his (Maddox s) due process right.
