The Pepsi Cola Company
The industry I have chosen is the Pepsi Cola Company. Pepsi is one of the world s leading food
and beverage companies. The company was founded by Caleb Davis Bradham, a New Bern,
North Carolina pharmacist in the 1890s. Mr. Bradham became the first president of the
company. Pepsi Cola was formulated in 1898. He believed the drink was more than a
refreshment but a heathy cola. In late 1902, the Pepsi Cola Company was formed due to the
rising popularity and demand for the Pepsi Cola syrup. On June 16, 1903, Pepsi Cola became an
official trademark. In 1910 Pepsi Cola Company held their first Bottle Convention in ... Show more

There is always competition in the market. It is possible for a company to cater both the
consumer and the company. Capitalism plays a large part in our society today. Capitalism require
a constantly expanding market for selling its products and sometime consist of having large groups
of cheap labor. In the real world, competitors compete to get rid of competition. Recently a number
of questions have been raised about capitalism and how it serves the consumer. Pepsi competes
constantly with other beverage companies which is part of Capitalism. PepsiCo is one of the world s
leading food and beverage companies with over $66 billion in net revenue in 2014 and a global
portfolio of diverse and beloved brands.

Causing death by negligence is punishable by imprisonment of up to two years, a fine, or both.
Other crimes similar to manslaughter include punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to
murder, addressed in S. 304 of the Indian Penal Code:
Whoever commits culpable homicide not amounting to murder shall be punished with
imprisonment for life, or imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to ten
years, and shall also be liable to fine, if the act by which the death is caused is done with the

It is true that sentencing is not like baking a cake; you cannot lay down in advance, for every case,
the exact ingredients and proportions, the exact temperature required... In sentencing, courts are not
dealing with standards and ingredients but with an infinite variety of offences, offenders and
situations. Nevertheless, there ought to be some definite criteria to decide the sentence. Taking a
lead in this direction, the Federal Authorities in U.S.A. established sentencing Institutes in 1957 to
impart some sort of training for magistrates in matters of sentencing. Sentencing Councils are also
set up in USA to discuss the problem of sentencing and adopting a uniform policy on judicial
sentencing. In England, vigorous efforts have been made by Lord Chief Justice ever since 1970 to
ascertain definite principles of sentencing. The length of the prison sentence is usually
commensurate with the seriousness of the offence as provided under the Criminal Justice Act,
1991. S.2(2) of the Act further empowers the court to imprison a person convicted of a violent or
sexual offence for longer than the seriousness of the case requires, but not exceeding the maximum
in any case. Another Act passed by the British Parliament, namely, the Crime(Sentences) Act, 1997
has removed the provision of remission from the penal code. In order to provide safeguard against
the arbitrary use of judicial discretion, efforts are being made to introduce computerized sentencing
system ever since

Halogenated Organic Compounds Used as Flame Retardants
Among all the different types of flame retardants, halogenated organic compounds are most
commonly used in flame retardant industry. These halogenated organic compounds contain
bromine or chlorine attached to their carbon atoms. Major uses of theses flame retardants by
volume in United States are():
пѓ Electronics
пѓ Building Insulation
пѓ Polyurethane Foam
пѓ Wires and Cables
Out of all the flame retardants, the brominated flame retardants are used extensively used in the
market because of their high performance efficiency and low cost(). There are 75 different types of
brominated flame retardants which are recognized commercially. On the basis of highest
production volume, the five major brominated flame retardants with their properties are classified
as:
A) Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBA) Chemical Structure:
It is mainly used as a reactive in products such as printed circuit boards, but could be also found
as an reactive in several polymers. It is highly lipophilic and therefore has a low water solubility.
Most of the Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBA) is excreted in bile with little retained in tissues().
Health effects of Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBA):
пѓ The oral lethal dose LD50 is approximately 5g/kg in rats and therefore it has low acute
toxicity().
пѓ It inhibits the activation of T cells which directly affects immune system. Therefore, it is
considered as immunotoxic.
пѓ It is hepatotoxic as it destroys mitochondria by uncoupling oxidative phosphorylation.

Case Study Honesty Testing At The Carter Cleaning Company
Introduction Career planning is the process in which somebody becomes conscious of their skills
(knowledge, motivations, and interests) or other characteristics to achieve a definite goal. In this
particularly case study Honesty Testing at the Carter Cleaning Company, the main concern is
stealing. When it comes to HRM or Human Resource Management, small business usually take
the full force of the problem. Usually, the manager or director has no Human Resource employees
that he/she can trust or rely on. The screening process that the company uses is been causing
problems, and find themselves with issues with honest and reliable personnel. The proprietors of
the establishment, Jennifer and her father are trying to figure it out a way to diminish the
turnover. For example, according to the Department of Labor, Job openings, hires, and separations

In my opinion, that is the main purpose of dishonesty tests. Every single manager wants an
employee that they feel they can trust. However, a disadvantage is that some of these tests are
expensive and since Jennifer has a small business than these tests are a bit out of her league. Once
in a while she can use those tests, but is not something that can be done every time she wants to
hire somebody. Backgrounds checks are the most effective ways to separate theft prone people from
the ones that are not. With these types of tests Jennifer can differentiate which individuals are
trustworthy. When an employee is caught stealing or in the process of stealing products,
merchandise and/or cash that individual should be fire immediately. Jennifer would have to make
an immediate decision as to call the police or handle the matter

Romance In Nathaniel Hawthorne s Blithedale Romance
Nathaniel Hawthorne s Blithedale Romance, rather than being considered a novel, should be
considered with the distinction of a romance. The beginnings of the book are heavily laden with
symbols and allusions to the supernatural along with romantic interests, both characteristic of a
romance. Coverdale consistently discusses the Veiled Lady and claims Zenobia is an enchantress,
actually saying in Chapter Six that Zenobia is an enchantress! He continues, she is a sister of the
Veiled Lady! That flower in her hair is a talisman. If you were to snatch it away, she would vanish;
or be transformed into something else (45)! The presence of the supernatural is anything but
lacking in this romance. Coverdale in his narration believes Zenobia s

It is therefore very essential for all to realize that public outcry for increased social responsibility
will not disappear if business organizations fail to respond to the challenges these had posed for
the society. In view of the perceived information gap, it is therefore worthwhile collating and
aggregating in a more organized manner, the contributions of Nigerian corporations [using banking
and communications industries as a focus] to the well being of the society. This is necessary if
only to show, in a graphic and mathematical ways that the industries seriously identify with the
aspirations of the communities and the general public. In the early years of this century, two
Americans independently and without knowing of each other were among the first businessmen in
the world s history to initiate major community reforms. Andrews Carnegie preached and financed

Tatro v. University of Minnesota refers to a case of the University of Minnesota bringing
disciplinary action against a student for several Facebook posts. In 2009, Amanda Tatro was a
junior at the University of Minnesota, enrolled in the mortuary science program taking a class
with a lab working with cadavers. Since Tatro was working in a cadaver lab through the
Anatomy Bequest Program, she had to sign a discloser form acknowledging that she understood
and agreed to comply with the program rules, as well as additional laboratory policies stated in
the course syllabus. Additional laboratory policies being, the course syllabus for the anatomy lab
included rules set up to promote respect for the cadaver. The anatomy lab rules allowed respectful
and discreet conversational language of cadaver dissection outside the laboratory, but prohibited
blogging about the anatomy lab or cadaver dissection (Tatro v. University of Minnesota, 2012).

African American Veterans Issues
Sue Kelly once said that The sacrifices made by veterans and their willingness to fight in defense
of our nation merit deep respect and praise and to the best in benefits and medical care
(BrainyQuotes). When it comes to a person lacking civil rights, it is most common for the general
public to picture an African American, a gay or queer person, or someone else in the minorities.
However, statistics have shown a surprising rise in veterans with limited health care, no house, and
no job. It is under these numbers, that in which I instate my belief that there lies a major civil rights
issue in the veterancommunity to which American civilians must answer to.

However, he Veterans for America have taken to a less popular choice. Instead of completely
doing away with the VA, the Veterans for America request a change in them instead. The priorities
have been sorted in a list of ten that also serve as instructions. First off is the rule that veterans
must come first, not the VA. This is the most important rule. They believe that the care and funding
of veteran health should be the first priority. The second priority refocuses on veteran service for
those with disabilities and specialized needs. The third is the improvement of the VA, or more
specifically the improvement of how the VA work such as dealing with the timing and quality of
care. The fourth and fifth priorities deals with the allowing of choice concerning from who and
where the veterans receive their health care from. They believe the veteran has a right to choose.
Following suit, the sixth, seventh, and eighth priorities again drills upon the Veteran Affairs by
suggesting reform on thing such as the possibilities of health care on their budget, veterans
demographics, and the cycle of their standard operating procedures. They also note that the reform
of such things will require bipartisan vision, courage, and commitment to which they state in their
ninth priority and how to implement it. The tenth but by far not the least important priority is to

Marcus Aurelius And Stoicism
After the death of Aristotle, philosophy that targeted greater complex depths was outrun by
philosophy that focused on mere everyday lives. With the rise and fall of Skepticism, Cynicism,
and Epicureanism there was an influence that survived years impacting life and that was Stoicism.
Zeno of Citium who believed that the world had an ultimate plan and everything including nature,
animals, and humans, were there for a reason (Hergenhahn Henley, 2014, p. 66). The reason
Stoicism was easily used is because it was well suited with the way Romans highlighted their law
and order giving the extensive coverage displayed by many philosophers, including Marcus Aurelius
. Marcus Aurelius, was born in 121 C.E. Growing up his focus of education was overseen by
Emperor Hadrian and soon taken over by Emperor Antonius teaching him more of a rhetoric
(Sellars, 2002). As the years progressed he shifted in to a study of philosophy leading to him
becoming what we know as one of the most important Stoic philosophers. Marcus Aurelius
became an emperor in A.D. 160 lasting to A.D.180. he was working closely with Lucius Verus in
169 and his son Commodus in 177 (Crook, 2017). Marcus Aurelius later passed away in A.D. 180,
yet his most personal literature is still read today, Meditations. Marcus Aurelius and his
philosophies were composed down in a collection of his intimate writings titled Meditations. The
compilations and stories that Meditations follows are the influence of Stoicism along with

Reverend Hale Beliefs
The Changing Of Moral Beliefs
Arthur Miller has his own ideas of tragic hero and he says that a tragic hero is someone who
stands up to there own person dignity and has a flaw (Miller 1). Truth is when someone does not
lie and only says what is true. In reality truth can cause problems with people in a society. Identity
is who someone is there qualities and beliefs. In the real world many people change who they are
for others. The important thing is to only change for ourselves and not for others. Our identity is
who we are and we have the power to change our own beliefs for ourselves only. The character
Reverend Hale is symbolized as a tragic hero in order to preserve his integrity by changing his
identity and being truthful because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Reverend Hale was a priest so he was all about honesty and did not want anyone to lie. Hale once
said, cleave to no faith when faith brings blood (Miller 132). In this quote Reverend Hale warns
Elizabeth and tells her that she should not lie because that is bad and it could lead to death. This
connects to Reverend Hale as a tragic hero because he changed his beliefs as he left the court
and left Salem. Then Reverend Hale returned to Salem because he wanted to help save the rest
of the people of Salem since he was not there to directly help John Proctor. Hale went from being
someone all about honesty to basically a liar. The only way to help save the people of Salem
would be to tell them to lie. Reverend Hale was only able to do this because he left the court. If
he was still part of the court he would have to follow what they do and he would not have a voice
or a say. When it came to John Proctor s trial, he decided to tell the truthbut that unfortunately did
not work out for him. This is because they sent Elizabeth into the court and asked he the same
question they asked John Proctor, however, Elizabeth lied for her husband. Because he did not
say the same thing as John Proctor he would most likely be killed for this. When this was
happening, Reverend Hale was still part of the court so he did not have say about what would
happen to John Proctor. This is one of the reasons why Reverend Hale

Five Platonic Solids
The Five Platonic Solids The five platonic solids are the tetrahedron, cube, octahedron,
dodecahedron, and the icosahedron. They are named for the Greek philosopher Plato. Plato wrote
about them in The Timaeus (c.360 B.C.) in which he paired each of the four classical elements,
earth, air, water, and fire with a regular solid. Earth was paired with the cube, air with the
octahedron, water with the icosahedron, and fire with the tetrahedron. The fifth Platonic solid, the
dodecahedron, Plato says that, ...the god used for arranging the constellations on the whole heaven

element, but he had no interest in matching... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some people credit Pythagoras with their discovery. Others say he may have been only familiar
with them and that the octahedron and icosahedron belong to Theaetetus. Theaetetus was the
first to give a mathematical description of all five and could have been responsible for the first
piece of proof that no other regular polyhedra are out there. A net is the shape that is made by
unfolding a 3D figure. A net is made up of all the faces of a figure. For a solid to be considered a
platonic it needs each face to be a regular polygon and each vertex must come together because if
only two came together the figure would collapse on itself. The sum of each interior angle of the
faces meeting at a vertex must be less than 360 degrees. A polyhedra solid must have all flat
faces, whilst a non polyhedra solid has a least one of its surfaces that is not flat. Regular means
all angles are of equal measure, all faces are congruent or equal in every way, and all edges are of
equal length. 3D means that shape has width, depth and height. A polygon is a closed shape in a
plane figure with at least five straight edges. A dual is a Platonic Solid that fits inside another
Platonic Solid and connects to the midpoint of each

The Argument Of The Chinese Room ( CR )
The Chinese Room (CR) is a thought experiment intended to prove that a computer cannot have a
mental life with a strong sense of intelligence alike to one that humans possess because a computer
does not have a genuine understanding. Rather, a computer is a mere simulator of understanding,
and by extension, a simulator of intelligence. According to John Searle, because computers lack a
true understanding they are rendered incapable of possessing mental life as we know and
experience it (Searle 2004). In the following paper, I intend to explain and philosophically examine
John Searle s argument of CR and will then proceed to reject his theory based on a series of
objections. I will do this by examining the concept of human intelligence through a filmic analogy,
put forth the Systems Reply objection, and examine how the CR argument is foregrounded in
anthropocentric bias that presupposes only humans are capable of true intelligence. Overall, I argue
that CR fails to convincingly argue that only humans can possess a human intelligence because it is
an argument based more on intuitive claims, than sound reasoning. As promised, I begin by
outlining the main crux of the Chinese Room argument. If you imagine a sealed room where
through a slot you can submit questions written in Chinese and you can receive answers in Chinese,
your inclination is more than likely going to be to assume that whomever resides within the room
understands, and is able to, communicate in Chinese.

Problems Associated with Drought in Africa, and Proposed...
Africa is a continent that suffers from many problems in many areas. The name of the continent has
become synonymous with poverty, hunger and disease. These problems are connected with each
other significantly. Many observers believe that the successive African crises are because of some
reasons such as violence in most African countries, corruption that is rooted in the majority of
African governments and stagflation which puts the continent in the mouth of hunger and
unemployment(Stewart, 2004). However, there are other factors which are responsible for Africas
crises such as unstable environment, the growing population and agricultural difficulties (African

Drought, which is a clear manifestation of global warming, has severe effects on the African
arena. Large parts in Africa has turned into deserts in a short period; for example, within two
decades, around 6700 hectares of forest, which contained different animals such as monkeys,
deer and buffalo, have become a barren area (Ogodo, 2006, p2). Indeed, More than 300000
people died because of drought in the Sahel in the seventies (Scott, 2005, p2). The fact that 40%
of African income depends on agriculture, and 70% of the African workers are engaged in
agriculture means that the drought is certain death to the continent (Scott, 2005, p2). In the
future, some believe that around 66% of African space could be dry because of deforestation
and grazing (African ecology, 1990). In addition, many observers believe that the drought is the
origin of all the African crises (Brown, 2006). Over the history of the continent, different tribes
and races have fought over water sources , which lead some times to genocides (Scott, 2005, p5)
For example, the conflict in Darfur between the Sudanese government backed militia and rebels,
which has left more than 300000 dead is mainly due to drought. This problem can be solved partly
or even totally by the provision of water (Block, 2010). Global warming is mainly produced by the
industrial countries. There is growing evidence that shows the steady

Antimicrobial and Other Therapeutic Properties of Spices
Spices are natural compounds derived from different parts of a plant which are commonly used as

Dietary flavines and flavones exert their effects on signal transduction enzymes such as protein
tyrosine and focal adhesion kinases present on the cell surface, causing them to act as an

spices are known to exert antioxidant properties against oxidative stress. In addition, the presence
of phenolic content such as phenolic acids and flavonoids allow spices to act as natural food

Businesses are facing increasing difficulty to recruit both skilled as well as unskilled workers
Evaluation of Market Potential Thailand is facing an increase competition in labour intensive
industries because of growing population at faster pace in neighbouring. To have competitive
advantage, Thailand must improve its quality of education and also develop the necessary skills
to improve the value added chain. The growth of real GDP is expected to range from 4.0% to
5.0% in medium term. The government is also trying to tackle the increasing differences in the
income distribution to ease the political tensions. Government s increased spending on flood
prevention programme and development of basic infrastructure should drive the economy, at least
by the year 2013. Constructions Sectors, building material manufacturers and the banks are likely
to benefit from the government spending plans. It is expected that potential output can rise from
3.5% in 2011 to 5% in the medium term only if infrastructure is improved and if development
potential in the lagging areas is tapped. Thailand is already experiencing a shift in retail buying
habits in urban areas. Buddhist temples and mosques serves as centre of community life in rural
Thai areas, but large cities like Bangkok have experienced a retail revolution which has witness
large department malls and also more recently hypermarkets which now emerges as primary focus

However there are additional threats and limitations that might affect foreign businesses,
particularly retailers. Especially, taking into consideration a significant role that local government
plays in the Chinese market.
The growing concern for retailers is that the Chinese government is discussing adopting
protectionist regulations in the retail industry. New regulations are showing signs already as the
local government has selected a group of local retailers and is giving them financial support. It is
the first stage of formation of the national champions local retail companies which are expected to
become the leaders of the retail industry. There are many reason why the Chinese government is
compelled to undertake these actions such as the retail industry is expanding at a fast rate and from
the local population s perspective the key industry players that benefit from it the most are foreign
companies. This viewpoint pressurises the government to protect the local retail chains, which are
not able to compete against international retail giants because of the insufficient financial resources.
Therefore these regulations are expected to favour domestic retailers in allocation of strategic
locations and have been highly welcomed by national retailers. Under these circumstances it is of
utmost importance for foreign retailers to re assess their future strategies. As it was mentioned

which is also called the Age of Reason . It was an intellectual movement in the development of
modern thought. Usually referred to the European culture of the 17th and 18th centuries. It s the
period in history of the western culture, stretching through the country. Where centuries of
traditional thoughts in the sphere of politics, education, natural rights, etc. were now subject to
investigation, to see whether changes were possible. By dramatic revolutions in society, politics,

My Application For South Africa
My Application for South Africa 2016 The first time I was introduced to South Africa was last year
during choir. For choir we sang a South African ritual. This enticed me to look into the culture of
South Africa to find out more things about my new found interest. During this investigation I found
out that South Africais prominent for their unique wild life, it is the only country which has hosted
the world cup for cricket, rugby, and soccer, the vast history due to the colonialization of Africaby
Europe, and the luxurious bodies of water found in South Africa. Also during my research, I found
out that Woodberry offers an exchange program in South Africa. I became extremely interested in
this program. I would love to do this program so... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These include Nelson Mandela s house, Robben Island, Groot Constantia, The Company s Garden,
and the Bartholomeu Dias Museum Complex. These places entice me due to the fact that history is
one of my favorite subjects.
Another major part of South Africa is the sports seen there. South Africa s main sports are rugby,
cricket, and soccer. I am a huge sports fanatic, however I am not as interested in South African
sports as I would like to be. South Africa has such a dedication to its sports that it is the only
country which has hosted the world cup in rugby, soccer, and cricket. South Africa hosted the rugby
world cup in 1995, the cricket world cup in 2003, and the soccer world cup in 2010. I would love
to see the locations of where these important games were played, which brings me to my next
point, South Africa s unique sights. South Africa is also known for its breathtaking sights which
include the Kruger National Park, Table Mountain, Blyde River Canyon, and the Hluhluwe
Umfolozi Game Reserve just to name a few. At these sights you can either see the unique animals
of South Africa in their natural habitat, or look over all of South Africa from the mountain and
the canyon. The culture of South Africa is one of the major reasons why I would love to be able
to participate in this unique opportunity. I also think I would be the right choice for this program
due to the person that I am. If I am chosen St Johns would be

Rhetorical In The Death Of The Moth By Virginia Woolf
It is often said that death is an inescapable inevitability in life. In Virginia Woolf s narration The
Death of the Moth, the struggle between life and death is depicted exactly as such a battle that is
not, in the end, ever won. Woolf utilizes rhetorical devices such as tone, fragmentation within the
narration, and metaphors to convey this message and invoke the feeling of pity in her reader. As the
tone shifts throughout the piece, Woolf s metaphors and stylistic choices strengthen and drive
home the idea that death is the one fight that can t be won.
A desperate and hopeless underlying tone is maintained throughout the piece, and is skillfully
developed in relation to the surface tone of idle indifference and fascination from the speaker. ...

The appeal to pathos is strong and maintained throughout the piece as the reader can almost sit in
the speaker s place and visualize the moth s activities for themselves, which works in
correspondence with the tone in creating a feeling of pity. In retrospect, it helps to illustrate the
indifference of the outside world to the individual, as seen through not only the scene depicted from
out the window in the first paragraph, but the speaker s simple and mild curiosity towards the moth.
The latter is the stronger of the two pieces of evidence, as it speaks through the personal connection
developed through the narration. The speaker only ever watches the moth, providing no real
intervention or attempt to save it only once does she ever make even a minuscule attempt to help,
which is quickly abandoned as she recognizes the approach of death and [laid] the pencil down to
continue watching. She utilizes the word looked in the fifth paragraph after doing so, making her
curiosity sound passive and mild as if she no longer cares much whether or not the moth lives or
passes on. For the reader, such a choice of wording only strengthens the feeling of pity maintained
towards the moth. The speakers actions, though, foreshadow the acceptance conveyed in the end to
the reader through the moth s death and the final line o yes, he seemed to say, death is stronger than
I am. Within the narration, Woolf utilizes fragmentation to intensify certain points in the piece. In
the beginning, she illustrates the insignificance but fascination the moth holds in the world through
sentences such as one could not help but watch him, what he could do he did, and he was little or
nothing but life. Such fragments set the tone of the piece and gives meaning to the moth s
character. As the piece progresses, the fragmentation used is more intense and purposely takes away
from the pathos

Leo Tolstoy The Three Hermits
In the short story The Three Hermits Leo Tolstoy illustrates how faith in God does not derive
from the complexity of one s prayer or doctrine, but rather from the simplicity and humbleness in
one s heart to be genuinely faithful and all serving to him. The story consists of three religious
hermits, who have chosen a life of simplistic isolation. Also, there is this bishop on a pilgrimage to
spread the word of god, he hears about these hermits that live on a small island in search of the
salvation of their souls (275). As a holy man himself, the priest had no choice but to see these
hermits for himself and educate them about true doctrine. The three hermits were men who had
sacrifice their entire lives to God. Tolstoy portrays their sacrifice by the men s descriptions. They
were extremely old, the fisherman stated that one s must have been at least hundred years old. They
were wearing tattered peasant clothes. One was even described to have a beard to his knees. They
lived in their humble island without the need of materialistic possessions. They showed no signs of
greed, lust, gluttony, they were true men of god. Also, the men showed great humbleness through
their charity. When the fisherman got stranded on the Hermit s island they welcomed him. The
hermits helped him mend his... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The bishop believed the only right way to serve God was through the holy scriptures. The humble
men repeated each doctrine until it was implanted in their brains, but they did not understand why
they were saying those things. They repeated, but did not truly feel it in their hearts. They only
knew one way to pray, a simple verse three are ye, three are we, have mercy upon us (277). It was
simple, yet it was something they truly believed in. They wanted a greater connection to God,

Essay on Revenge, Insanity, Murder Poe
Ending in death most foul, The Cask of Amontillado and The Tell Tale Heart feature revenge and a
painstaking cruelty. Pushed to the point of insanity and retribution sought over trivialities, the
narrators tell each story by their own personal account. The delivery of their confessions gives a
chilling depth to the crimes they have committed and to the men themselves. Both men are
motivated by their egos and their obsessions with their offenders. Prompted by their own delusions,
each man seeks a violent vengeance against his opposition in the form of precise, premeditated
homicide.
Carefully, cautiously the Montresor plotted precisely how he would exact revenge upon Fortunato.

by which he is consumed and that eye that sends him into madness. It pushes him to wish to never

The point of view each story is told from is a key factor to the unfolding of the events. Had they

personality. No real regret is ascertainable, save for the very end when the Montresor tells us that

My Best Friend s White Analysis
HOW Have Indigenous Australian Voices Transformed the Way We Respond to Indigenous Issues?
As more and more Australians become interested in texts created by Indigenous Australians, they
are influenced by the authors voices and become more aware of the issues that Indigenous
Australians face today. Two such texts are BabaKiueria, a mockumentary by Don Featherstone and
My Best Friend s White, a poem by Oodgeroo Noonuccal. The authors explore issues that they
have faced in the past and in the present and endeavor to make their audiences join them in trying to
address these issues.
One of the issues most blatant to Indigenous Australians, yet mainly unnoticed by European
Australians, is discrimination. BabaKiueria shows this through many techniques which are often
present in mockumentaries. One of the most obvious is segregation, or us vs. them . This is one of
the basis techniques of the film, as the entire point of the mockumentary is the black settlers
investigating the lives and habits of the white indigenous people. One example of this is when the
mockumentary presenter visits a ritual of violence , or a football game. She states that they (the
white natives) love violence , and describes the tribes wearing the colours of their totems as their
teams battle with each other.

ironically contributing to the very problem that they are trying to distance themselves from. One
example of this is the repeated use of the phrase I m not racist/My best friend s white . The
repetition of a phrase that is commonly heard when people are trying to separate themselves from
racism makes the audience notice it more. Many people reading the poem may realise that they
themselves use or have used this phrase. In this way, it draws attention to the

The First Film Of The Dardenne Brothers
The first film of the Dardenne Brothers relates a story about Igor, a fifteen year old boy, whom
his main priority is to complete the construction of his kart. He lives with his father, who does
not see any problems in smuggling illegal immigrants as he exploits them unscrupulously. To
Igor, this only seems the natural order of things, however, things eventually start to crumble
when he promises an African man, who fell from a scaffolding during construction work and is
about to die, to look after his wife and son. This is Igor s first step away from the omnipotence of
his father. The realism of the Dardenne brothers is eximious to an extent that his characters are
completely human, rowdy, and intense with a thought provoking moral fight between what s
right and wrong. The Dardenne brothers presented a world providing a silent revolution inside
the art film with an unmistakable mark, humanist realism. A hand held film following the
characters as we dive to discover more of the narrative as the conflicts start to unfold. A sordid
story about illegal immigration, moral failure of principles, a tutorial about social dilemmas
faced by a new Europe and an emotional odyssey of a boy who seeks to acknowledge his own
awareness when evolves his own code of values. Olivier Gourmet and JГ©rГ©mie Renier, who
returned in other works of the directors, father and son, respectively, wrestling with immigration. As

Legalization of Marijuana Research Paper
Marijuana is a very popular drug that many people have used. Over 98 million people over the
age of 12 in the United States have smoked marijuana. It is known under many different names
such as: weed, bud, ganja, hashish, doobie, reefer, mary jane and grass. It plays quite a
substantial role in modern day pop culture and almost everyone over the age of 16 knows what it
is. Despite all this, marijuana is illegal and in most states a person can be sent to jail for the

There have been 0 recorded deaths caused by smoking marijuana. Even though smoking marijuana
cannot kill a person, a common argument is that smoking cannabis can cause cancer. But in a study
done by Donald Tashkin at the UCLA School of Medicine, he showed that people who smoke
marijuana are at less risk of developing lung cancer than tobacco smokers. In fact, he concluded
that people who smoke marijuana are just as likely to get lung head or neck cancer as those who
do not smoke anything at all. In a study done by the Wisconsin University of Medicine and Public
Health in 2008, investigators found that cannabinoids (chemical compounds found in marijuana)
stopped the spread of brain cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, skin cancer,
pancreatic cancer, and lymphoma. A method to eliminate the harm caused to a person s lungs
from smoking marijuana is by cooking food containing oil with marijuana. It is possible to
transfer THC (the chemical compound in marijuana that gives a person the sensation of getting
high ) and other cannabinoids from the plant into food, still giving a person the desired feeling
without any of the lung damage. When a person drinks alcohol, they usually have a hangover the

hours of that time was on office equipment, that he deserved compensation for at least 1,800

Hacker deserved to be compensated for his time in the amount of $34,000. Our optimal outcome
was to concede most Powerscreen royalties to HackerStar in order to receive payment for time
invested, since that would help dissolve tension between Hacker and Star and be more
financially beneficial to Hacker. We determined our BATNA to be compensation for at least
some of the hours invested in Powerscreen and HackerStar receiving 100% of the royalties.

The Key Role Of Muscles In The Human Body
The spinal column, and muscles around it play a key role in our lives. Most of our structural
support in our back comes from structures called vertebrae. In total the human has 33 vertebrae.
The bodies of the vertebrae rest on intervertebral discs. These discs have a ring of fibrocartilage
called annulus fibrosus with a substance in the center called pulposus. These tissues provide
flexibility within the spinal column. The spinal cord runs through the vertebral foramen of each
vertebrae. Some vertebrae have spinous processes that are located on the posterior of the
structures. Within the vertebral foramen there is fat, areolar connective tissue, and blood vessels.
These tissues provide cushioning for the spinal cord which is a vital part of our survival. The

The rotatores are located on the spinous processes of the vertebrae superior to the one of the origin.
Its purpose is to extend the vertebral column and to rotate the column from side to side by

vertebrae and then connects to the spinous processes of two to three vertebrae above it s origin (
Transversospinalis Multifidus. ) This continues all of the way down the spinal column. Its main
function is to extend the column and laterally flex the column while rotating the head to the side
by contracting opposite muscles. The semispinalis thoracis is on the spinous process of the
superior four vertebrae and the last two cervical vertebrae. The semispinalis cervicis, on the other
hand, is on the spinous processes of the first and fifth cervical vertebrae. The purpose of these two
muscles is similar to the others. They too extend the column in their respective regions along with
rotating the head to the opposite side of the contracting

The Role Of Abortion In America Today
Although abortions in America today are both effective and accessible procedures, it has not
always been that way. Precedent to the 1860s abortions were legal, but also very dangerous.
However, during the nineteenth century when new procedures were invented and more people
became educated in the medical field, abortions could, for the first time ever, be performed safely.
What instead came along was the criminalization of abortion. The procedure was now seen as the
unethical taking of another person s life.
Approximately a hundred years later, in the 1960s, women started recognizing how the state was
controlling their bodies by either forcing them to stay pregnant or face unsafe methods in order to

We got to town and I bought the steam engine I had been wanting. I did not really care, just tossed

In Films And Television, There Are Many Different Ways
In films and television, there are many different ways the filmmakers choose to create their films
to be hegemonic or counter hegemonic. For an example, the movie The Blind Side is created to
remove stereotypes focused around race and economic class. In many movies and television shows,
writers challenge stereotypes and use counter hegemony to remove stereotypes around social
groups like raceand economic class.
There are many articles that talk about race and social class in movies. One article is, How The
Blind Side Blinds Us: Post racism and the American Dream by Jeffery Bineham. This article
mentions how the movie fights against racism. The author of this article explains how this film
uses counter hegemony to display public ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Within the movie The Blind Side there are many different ways that the film writers challenge
hegemonic beliefs. For example, one of the main characters in the movie is an upper class
southern white woman. The women adopted a low class large black man, which represents the
removal of stereotypes around upper class southerners being racists towards blacks. The women s
friends challenged her with stereotypes comments. The friends comment saying that she should not
be taking in any black men into her house. They say he is going to steal her belongs to sell them
because he is a poor black man, which reinforces the stereotypes around poor black men. There are
racial and economic class stereotypes in the south because of the southern history of slavery. The
woman removes the stereotypes with her acts in the movie, which shows how the movie represents
counter hegemony.
The Blind Side represents counter hegemony in many different ways. Following the example
previously stated the filmmakers remove the stereotype of black people are only good at sports . In
the movie, the high class, white women adopted the low class black man. The man was
recruited to play football by the high school coach, and then by colleges. He was a large black
male, which fits the stereotype of black football players. The movie shows the stereotype
representing that he is only good at football and not academics. His grades were very low, and he
was told he wouldn t get into college. He proved this

Argumentative Essay About Freemason
No one really knows what happens when Masons have meetings unless you re a Mason yourself.
Because people are ignorant on the topic of the Masons many different conspiracies are out
there. The fraternity has been around since ancient Egypt. People think all different things on
what the Freemasons are or what they do. You must believe in a God to join but they are non
denominational. To become a Mason you have to learn a coded language. Some people think
they are a satanic group or are trying to take over the world. People all over the world believe
different theories about the Masonry group. People are usually afraid of what they don t know.
The Freemasons are a secret organization so unless you re a member you can t know what going
on. Everyone is a little curious of what they do at meetings. Many people believe that they are
trying to take over the world. People believe this for many reasons. Fourteen of the forty three U.S
presidents were Masons. Masonic Presidents were George Washington, James Monroe, Andrew
Jackson, James Polk, James... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first proof of Masons date back to ancient Egypt. This is why many of the masonry symbols
are pyramids. Masons are not a secret society but they are secretive. Members can tell anyone
they are a Mason they just can t release the secrets of the order. Only men who are members can
be apart of the meetings. Women and children can join but they each have separate groups. They
aren t permitted to recruit people to become members either, you have to go to a lodge and ask
to become a member. There are over 2 million Masons in North America and nearly 5 million
worldwide. They are the largest and oldest fraternity in the world. The many conspiracy theories on
the Masons will continue on due to the continued unknown of the organization by the general
public. Being around for over 5,000 years and growing every day they will not be disappearing

Salisbury Sage Diner s Character Analysis
I had just turned ten when my mom first took me to the Salisbury Chess Club. The dilapidated
Sage Diner dressed as if it were in the 50s (Absolute), I was immediately enamored by the chess
pieces. Soon, I established a reputation for myself as a capricious, impatient tactician able to beat
all but the most experienced players. I played with one of the better players, Phil (Appositive),
almost every week. Through those games, I learned many values, like patience and carefulness, that
not only apply to chessbut also to life. One late Autumn Wednesday night, after my mom and I had
just settled in the Sage Diner (Preposition), I noticed that there were only a few players. Two of
them had already began a game, so I asked Phil for a chess game.

Journey s End Journey
20th Century Drama The name of this play is Journey s End, written by R. C. Sherriff.
Introduction
The name of this play is Journey s End, written by R. C. Sherriff. The play was first preformed on a
Sunday night in December 1928. By 1929 it was being shown at the Savoy Theatre where it ran
for two years.
Later I will be studying the characters of Stanhope and Osborne, and how they link in with the title
Journey s End , and I will also examine the idea of journeys. I will also study the impact the play
had, why it was so successful and journeys of the minor characters,
Hibbert, Raleigh and Trotter.
Journeys
The subtext of the play is about journeys, mental, physical and emotional. Each character in the play

It starts at the beginning of the play, with him complaining of neuralgia. Stanhope doesn t believe
that Hibbert really has neuralgia, but thinks he is using it as an excuse to get out of the front line.
Later, Hibbert tries to leave, to go see the doctor so he can go home, but Stanhope confronts
Hibbert who still tries to leave. Stanhope threatens to shoot Hibbert, who stands there and shows
courage by telling Stanhope to shoot him.
This is a turning point in Hibbert s journey. Stanhope has realized that Hibbert may not actually
have neuralgia, but may just be terrified of what may happen in the war. Stanhope tells Hibbert
that he is terrified of what may happen, and in that moment, Hibbert decides to stay, and to fight
on. That is the major event in Hibbert s journey. Hibbert s journey went from being scared to
showing courage and bravery by staying. His journey ends in the big German attack at the end of
the play.
Trotter s journey is simpler, and mostly revolves around food, and where his next meal is coming
from. Back home trotter is a keen gardener, and has grown a prize Hollyhock. His journey ends in
the big
German attack at the end of the play.
Raleigh s journey is, and has been, strongly influenced by Stanhope, and his presence in Raleigh s
life. Stanhope knew Raleigh before the war, as their fathers were friends. When he first arrives in
the trenches, at the beginning of the play, he is very enthusiastic about
being

Managing Diversity in the Workplace Essay
Managing diversity and demographical changes in the workplace presents many dilemmas.
Confronted with constant change, management, business educators, and organizational consultants
continue to meet the challenges of a new and diverse workforce in a number of ways. Diversity
can be defined in numerous ways. Diversityincludes all the ways in which people differ, and it
encompasses all the different characteristics that make one individual or group different from
another. It is all inclusive and recognizes every individual and every group as part of the diversity
that should be valued. A broaddefinition includes not only race, gender, ethnicity, age, national

That unceasing mockery made me feel insecure about who I was and where I came from.
As I got older, my insecurity changed to a positive nature because of the sense of belonging in
an environment where everyone came from the very same ethnic background at the private
yeshiva for girls where I was enrolled for the duration of my high school years. I was constantly
exposed to the multifarious cultures in our society due to leading a life of living in two worlds,
my religious environment with my family in one and my socialization with my deaf friends who
came from a variety of ethnic background in another. For what I was exposed with growing up
has brought my sense of understanding and respect for ethnicity into perspective. I love learning
about others and sharing about mine as well as long as the feelings are mutual. The way I behave
affects others behaviors towards me. This allows for an amicable and friendly relationship with my
fellow peers personally and professionally.
With respect to the differences in maintaining skills and abilities, an individual s behavior can be
impacted by its own capabilities or lack thereof. Awareness of one s physical ability and skill can
enhance how one behaves. Maintaining skills is a learned power of doing something competently
such as speaking fluently using proper form of language or the memory of mixing drinks.

Summary Of Origins Of The Final Solution By Christopher...
The Origins of the final solution by Christopher Browning gives a comprehensive review of what
led up to the final solution. He belongs to the school of thought of moderate functionalism, that the
final solution was led up to, and that policies enacted led up to it, with no premeditation. He argues
that the final solution happened because of previous attempts to create a Judenfrei Europe that did
not have enough success. It uses multiple types of evidence to prove this thesis. First it talks about
Jewish policy in Poland, involving deportation and in turn the resettlement of Volksdeutsche. The
problem with this is that it does not have enough success, with deportation rates at a low 40% on
average. In addition, many government officials were

Jerks Is An Original Dark Comedy
HYPNIC JERKS is an original dark comedy/horror script that features a very likable protagonist
with a very intriguing sleep disorder. The idea of hypnic jerks is very refreshing as a flaw and it
s a disorder not often talked about. It s nice to see it in the script. The tone combines dark comedy
with horror elements. The script explores themes about life choices and destiny. The script offers a
couple of nice twists.
The highlight is the main character of Ray. He s a charming, yet troubled man, but one can t help
but like him and his dog, Bonham. Equally likable and intriguing is Ambrosia.
As much as one enjoys the characters, the script would benefit from more development in the areas
of structure and plot.
The main concern about the presentation is the lack of a well identifiable goal for Ray. The
plotline isn t entirely clear. Ray transforms himself into a vampire, which appears to be motivated
by the idea of the Vampire Festival, but that doesn t feel like a strong enough motivation.
In addition, the link between Ray transforming into a vampire and his sleep disorder isn t
entirely well connected. He s trying to write, but this too, unfortunately never feels like Ray s
true, actionable goal. Now, if Ray were trying to write about vampires and felt he needed to live
his life like a vampire to help him write to make the world more believable, this would connect his
behavior to his objective.
In addition, there s a subplot about women being stalked and then

Let us also assume that the company has done enough research and study to jot down the problem
areas and the areas where there is a scope of development
Now based on the assumptions and case facts some of the suggestions are as follows:
пѓ The company can focus on underprivileged children who don t have the chance of getting
education due to unavailability of paper, pencils, pens etc. and other expenses. They can provide
such stationeries to the underprivileged students in rural areas.
пѓ The company must come out with cheaply priced toothpastes, tooth brushes, tongue cleaners in
order to provide oral hygiene to the rural sector and launch an awareness program to make them
aware about the necessity of oral care in keeping yourself healthy.
пѓ As done by lifebuoy they can also make the villagers realize the importance of hygiene and
using soaps on a daily basis, in order to stay clean and healthy. Free samples must be provided to
the rural and semi urban people. This free sample distribution will make them use the product of
the company and sales will increase.
пѓ Hygiene is an important issue throughout the country, and women s hygiene is something that
one needs to be extra careful about, as women are more prone to diseases such as ovarian cancer,

Racism And Sexism In Sula
Toni Morrison, a Nobel Laureate, is considered one of the foremost figures in contemporary
American fiction whose award winning novels have won her international acclaim. Toni
Morrison has earned a reputation as a gifted storyteller and masterful stylist who has created
haunting images of humans isolated by their failures in love and their problems with identity. In
her novels, she presents black women as subjects who try to cultivate positive identity in a very
hostile world. Morrison s black female characters challenge all the stereotypical negative images
which are associated with black women. Toni Morrison s Sula is a fine work of art, well planned
and well executed, without losing any human interest. Sula was well received critically. The novel

This is confirmed by bell hooks who argues that: Sexism and racism intensified and magnified the
sufferings and oppressions of black women (22). Nevertheless, for many African American
women, motherhood presents a symbol of power and is an empowering experience (Collins 132
7). Motherhood is also seen as the standard of womanhood (Christian, Black Feminist Criticism
76). And according to this standard, women should live their lives to sacrifice for others.
However, in Sula, Toni Morrison creates a strong female character who not only refuses the role
[the standard role assigned for a woman], she steps outside the caste of woman, beyond any class
or definition [and] insists on making herself (Christian, Black Feminist Criticism 76). Sula will not
surrender to the assigned role and she counts on her friendship bond with Nel because this bond
allows both Nel and Sula to fight against oppression; but the two women separate in their adulthood
because of the different roles they take up in their

How I Have A Good Life
Most days I spend happily completing my homework and hanging out with my new friends and
loving family. I have a good life. Yet... There are those staggering moments, when I find myself
alone, and the memories and feelings of the past come to me with a wave of quiet emotions. It
was only a few months ago that my very best friend became my ex bestfriend. His name was,
Seth Kauffman, a student at Clayton Valley. He was not perfect, but who is? A while back, I had
lost a good friend and instead of being there for me, he bullied me, and made my life miserable...
But all wounds heal, and I gave him a second chance. We had become very close again. We

behind, to shy to contribute to the conversation. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Branden
skipped off to go find food. Who was that? I inquired with a raised eyebrow. That was Branden
Busby. He is extremely obsessed with you. Seth flatly replied. What?! Are you serious? My
mind buzzed with curiosity. Yes, but I want you to stay away from him. He is creepy. I obeyed
with the nodd of my head, and we both walked off to class together. *** Later that night on my
bed, wrapped in a soft, warm blanket I sat, pondering How could a boy I had never seen or met
before be obsessed with me? . I picked up my smooth phone and texted my other friend the latest
news. Hey guess what? I posed. Within seconds she replied. Wot? Today I discovered that some

Flag and Cross Burning as Free Speech Issues Essay
The first ten amendments to the Constitution better known as The Bill of Rights were developed
by the Founding Fathers in order to protect specific rights of the people of that time. The First
Amendment protected speech, religion and expression. The First Amendment was most probably
protecting scientific discourse, music, literature and the arts of elite white males. In 1791, there
was no protection implied or otherwise for women or black slaves. The cross burning of the Ku
Klux Klanor flag burning of American citizens was not a consideration of the Founding Fathers.

The notion of cross burning has been a form of terror used to intimidate blacks and other
minorities for over a century. Cross burning started in Scotland in the 14th Century used as a
signal to their armies. In the United States, it was used by the Ku Klux Klan to signal impending
violence against blacks in the late 1800 s to the present day. The Supreme Court has dealt with
the matter of cross burning two times. In 1992 in R. A. V. v. City of St. Paul, the court struck
down an ordinance that criminalized the display of certain symbols (burning crosses, swastikas,
etc.) for arousing anger on the basis of race, color, creed, religion or gender . Again, in 2003 the
court revisited this issue in Virginia v Black this decision was a bit more specific and was a 5 4
decision. The Supreme Court upheld the Virginia Court decision upholding the unconstitutionality
of the Virginia law but added that a state has a right to ban cross burning when there is the intent to
intimidate but stopped short of banning cross burning of all types . What the Supreme Court did
was set a road map for future laws banning cross burning.

It is true that sentencing is not like baking a cake; you cannot lay down in advance, for every case, the exact ingredients and proportions, the exact temperature required... In sentencing, courts are not dealing with standards and ingredients but with an infinite variety of offences, offenders and situations. Nevertheless, there ought to be some definite criteria to decide the sentence. Taking a lead in this direction, the Federal Authorities in U.S.A. established sentencing Institutes in 1957 to impart some sort of training for magistrates in matters of sentencing. Sentencing Councils are also set up in USA to discuss the problem of sentencing and adopting a uniform policy on judicial sentencing. In England, vigorous efforts have been made by Lord Chief Justice ever since 1970 to ascertain definite principles of sentencing. The length of the prison sentence is usually commensurate with the seriousness of the offence as provided under the Criminal Justice Act, 1991. S.2(2) of the Act further empowers the court to imprison a person convicted of a violent or sexual offence for longer than the seriousness of the case requires, but not exceeding the maximum in any case. Another Act passed by the British Parliament, namely, the Crime(Sentences) Act, 1997 has removed the provision of remission from the penal code. The second priority refocuses on veteran service for those with disabilities and specialized needs. The third is the improvement of the VA, or more specifically the improvement of how the VA work such as dealing with the timing and quality of care. • 12. Marcus Aurelius And Stoicism After the death of Aristotle, philosophy that targeted greater complex depths was outrun by philosophy that focused on mere everyday lives. With the rise and fall of Skepticism, Cynicism, and Epicureanism there was an influence that survived years impacting life and that was Stoicism. Zeno of Citium who believed that the world had an ultimate plan and everything including nature, animals, and humans, were there for a reason (Hergenhahn Henley, 2014, p. 66). The reason Stoicism was easily used is because it was well suited with the way Romans highlighted their law and order giving the extensive coverage displayed by many philosophers, including Marcus Aurelius . Marcus Aurelius, was born in 121 C.E. Growing up his focus of education was overseen by Emperor Hadrian and soon taken over by Emperor Antonius teaching him more of a rhetoric (Sellars, 2002). As the years progressed he shifted in to a study of philosophy leading to him becoming what we know as one of the most important Stoic philosophers. Marcus Aurelius became an emperor in A.D. 160 lasting to A.D.180. he was working closely with Lucius Verus in 169 and his son Commodus in 177 (Crook, 2017). Marcus Aurelius later passed away in A.D. 180, yet his most personal literature is still read today, Meditations. Reverend Hale Beliefs The Changing Of Moral Beliefs Arthur Miller has his own ideas of tragic hero and he says that a tragic hero is someone who stands up to there own person dignity and has a flaw (Miller 1). Truth is when someone does not lie and only says what is true. In reality truth can cause problems with people in a society. Identity is who someone is there qualities and beliefs. In the real world many people change who they are for others. The important thing is to only change for ourselves and not for others. Our identity is who we are and we have the power to change our own beliefs for ourselves only. Reverend Hale was a priest so he was all about honesty and did not want anyone to lie. Hale once said, cleave to no faith when faith brings blood (Miller 132). In this quote Reverend Hale warns Elizabeth and tells her that she should not lie because that is bad and it could lead to death. This connects to Reverend Hale as a tragic hero because he changed his beliefs as he left the court and left Salem. Then Reverend Hale returned to Salem because he wanted to help save the rest of the people of Salem since he was not there to directly help John Proctor. Hale went from being someone all about honesty to basically a liar. The only way to help save the people of Salem would be to tell them to lie. Reverend Hale was only able to do this because he left the court. If he was still part of the court he would have to follow what they do and he would not have a voice or a say. When it came to John Proctor s trial, he decided to tell the truthbut that unfortunately did not work out for him. This is because they sent Elizabeth into the court and asked he the same question they asked John Proctor, however, Elizabeth lied for her husband. Because he did not say the same thing as John Proctor he would most likely be killed for this. When this was happening, Reverend Hale was still part of the court so he did not have say about what would happen to John Proctor. This is one of the reasons why Reverend Hale ... A net is the shape that is made by unfolding a 3D figure. A net is made up of all the faces of a figure. For a solid to be considered a platonic it needs each face to be a regular polygon and each vertex must come together because if only two came together the figure would collapse on itself. The sum of each interior angle of the faces meeting at a vertex must be less than 360 degrees. A polyhedra solid must have all flat faces, whilst a non polyhedra solid has a least one of its surfaces that is not flat. • 15. The Argument Of The Chinese Room ( CR ) The Chinese Room (CR) is a thought experiment intended to prove that a computer cannot have a mental life with a strong sense of intelligence alike to one that humans possess because a computer does not have a genuine understanding. Rather, a computer is a mere simulator of understanding, and by extension, a simulator of intelligence. According to John Searle, because computers lack a true understanding they are rendered incapable of possessing mental life as we know and experience it (Searle 2004). In the following paper, I intend to explain and philosophically examine John Searle s argument of CR and will then proceed to reject his theory based on a series of objections. I will do this by examining the concept of human intelligence through a filmic analogy, put forth the Systems Reply objection, and examine how the CR argument is foregrounded in anthropocentric bias that presupposes only humans are capable of true intelligence. Overall, I argue that CR fails to convincingly argue that only humans can possess a human intelligence because it is an argument based more on intuitive claims, than sound reasoning. As promised, I begin by outlining the main crux of the Chinese Room argument. If you imagine a sealed room where through a slot you can submit questions written in Chinese and you can receive answers in Chinese, your inclination is more than likely going to be to assume that whomever resides within the room understands, and is able to, communicate in Chinese. ... The name of the continent has become synonymous with poverty, hunger and disease. These problems are connected with each other significantly. Many observers believe that the successive African crises are because of some reasons such as violence in most African countries, corruption that is rooted in the majority of African governments and stagflation which puts the continent in the mouth of hunger and unemployment(Stewart, 2004). However, there are other factors which are responsible for Africas crises such as unstable environment, the growing population and agricultural difficulties (African ecology, 1990). Drought, which is a clear manifestation of global warming, has severe effects on the African arena. Large parts in Africa has turned into deserts in a short period; for example, within two decades, around 6700 hectares of forest, which contained different animals such as monkeys, deer and buffalo, have become a barren area (Ogodo, 2006, p2). Indeed, More than 300000 people died because of drought in the Sahel in the seventies (Scott, 2005, p2). The fact that 40% of African income depends on agriculture, and 70% of the African workers are engaged in agriculture means that the drought is certain death to the continent (Scott, 2005, p2). In the future, some believe that around 66% of African space could be dry because of deforestation and grazing (African ecology, 1990). In addition, many observers believe that the drought is the origin of all the African crises (Brown, 2006). Over the history of the continent, different tribes and races have fought over water sources , which lead some times to genocides (Scott, 2005, p5) For example, the conflict in Darfur between the Sudanese government backed militia and rebels, which has left more than 300000 dead is mainly due to drought. This problem can be solved partly or even totally by the provision of water (Block, 2010). Global warming is mainly produced by the industrial countries. • 23. Rhetorical In The Death Of The Moth By Virginia Woolf It is often said that death is an inescapable inevitability in life. In Virginia Woolf s narration The Death of the Moth, the struggle between life and death is depicted exactly as such a battle that is not, in the end, ever won. Woolf utilizes rhetorical devices such as tone, fragmentation within the narration, and metaphors to convey this message and invoke the feeling of pity in her reader. As the tone shifts throughout the piece, Woolf s metaphors and stylistic choices strengthen and drive home the idea that death is the one fight that can t be won. A desperate and hopeless underlying tone is maintained throughout the piece, and is skillfully developed in relation to the surface tone of idle indifference and fascination from the speaker. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The appeal to pathos is strong and maintained throughout the piece as the reader can almost sit in the speaker s place and visualize the moth s activities for themselves, which works in correspondence with the tone in creating a feeling of pity. In retrospect, it helps to illustrate the indifference of the outside world to the individual, as seen through not only the scene depicted from out the window in the first paragraph, but the speaker s simple and mild curiosity towards the moth. The latter is the stronger of the two pieces of evidence, as it speaks through the personal connection developed through the narration. The speaker only ever watches the moth, providing no real intervention or attempt to save it only once does she ever make even a minuscule attempt to help, which is quickly abandoned as she recognizes the approach of death and [laid] the pencil down to continue watching. She utilizes the word looked in the fifth paragraph after doing so, making her curiosity sound passive and mild as if she no longer cares much whether or not the moth lives or passes on. For the reader, such a choice of wording only strengthens the feeling of pity maintained towards the moth. The speakers actions, though, foreshadow the acceptance conveyed in the end to the reader through the moth s death and the final line o yes, he seemed to say, death is stronger than I am. Within the narration, Woolf utilizes fragmentation to intensify certain points in the piece. In the beginning, she illustrates the insignificance but fascination the moth holds in the world through sentences such as one could not help but watch him, what he could do he did, and he was little or nothing but life. Such fragments set the tone of the piece and gives meaning to the moth s character. As the piece progresses, the fragmentation used is more intense and purposely takes away from the pathos ... The story consists of three religious hermits, who have chosen a life of simplistic isolation. Also, there is this bishop on a pilgrimage to spread the word of god, he hears about these hermits that live on a small island in search of the salvation of their souls (275). As a holy man himself, the priest had no choice but to see these hermits for himself and educate them about true doctrine. The three hermits were men who had sacrifice their entire lives to God. Tolstoy portrays their sacrifice by the men s descriptions. They were extremely old, the fisherman stated that one s must have been at least hundred years old. They were wearing tattered peasant clothes. One was even described to have a beard to his knees. They lived in their humble island without the need of materialistic possessions. As more and more Australians become interested in texts created by Indigenous Australians, they are influenced by the authors voices and become more aware of the issues that Indigenous Australians face today. Two such texts are BabaKiueria, a mockumentary by Don Featherstone and My Best Friend s White, a poem by Oodgeroo Noonuccal. The authors explore issues that they have faced in the past and in the present and endeavor to make their audiences join them in trying to address these issues. One of the issues most blatant to Indigenous Australians, yet mainly unnoticed by European Australians, is discrimination. BabaKiueria shows this through many techniques which are often present in mockumentaries. One of the most obvious is segregation, or us vs. them . There are a total of 27 expressed powers listed in the Constitution. Congress retains a number of special powers. It can act as a judicial body to impeach and try a president or other civil officer for misconduct. For example, the House of Representatives impeaches the official and Senate does a trial. Computer Software and Hacker Essay Analysis of the Powerscreen Problem In our recent negotiation, my partner Dave and I assumed the roles of Alan Hacker, a computer software developer, and Alan Hacker s lawyer. Being the lawyer in the negotiation my objective was to avoid litigation with my client s partner Stanley Star and to aid in the continuation of my client s co owned company HackerStar. In addition, I would assist Hacker in coming to an agreement that would be satisfying for him both personally and financially. I felt that Dave and I presented a reasonable argument on Hacker s behalf and, since I was able to apply some of our class readings during the process, I was overall pleased with the outcome. We decided that since Hacker spent 2,000 hours working on the software, in which only 200 hours of that time was on office equipment, that he deserved compensation for at least 1,800 hours. We determined this to be a years worth of pay and we informed Star and his attorney that Hacker deserved to be compensated for his time in the amount of $34,000. Our optimal outcome was to concede most Powerscreen royalties to HackerStar in order to receive payment for time invested, since that would help dissolve tension between Hacker and Star and be more financially beneficial to Hacker. We determined our BATNA to be compensation for at least some of the hours invested in Powerscreen and HackerStar receiving 100% of the royalties. ...maintaining your ongoing relationship may be more important to you than the outcome of any one deal. An apology may be one of the least costly and most rewarding investments you can make. • 34. The Key Role Of Muscles In The Human Body The spinal column, and muscles around it play a key role in our lives. Most of our structural support in our back comes from structures called vertebrae. In total the human has 33 vertebrae. The bodies of the vertebrae rest on intervertebral discs. These discs have a ring of fibrocartilage called annulus fibrosus with a substance in the center called pulposus. These tissues provide flexibility within the spinal column. The spinal cord runs through the vertebral foramen of each vertebrae. Some vertebrae have spinous processes that are located on the posterior of the structures. Within the vertebral foramen there is fat, areolar connective tissue, and blood vessels. This blood flow continues through the right atrioventricular valve into the right ventricle. The right ventricle contracts forcing the pulmonary valve to open leading blood flow through the pulmonary valve and into the pulmonary trunk. When all these materials are available the computer was turned on and three of the electrodes were placed on the body of my teammate. Precedent to the 1860s abortions were legal, but also very dangerous. However, during the nineteenth century when new procedures were invented and more people became educated in the medical field, abortions could, for the first time ever, be performed safely. What instead came along was the criminalization of abortion. The procedure was now seen as the unethical taking of another person s life.
