Distinctively Visual Descriptive Writing
Sitting listlessly at the back of the bus, a rock flies inside from the window and nearly passes
my eye. We have been going so fast that sand particles and rocks are being thrown into the bus
by the wind. I look outside only to look at the red rocks and sand of the soil that of which made up
the road. There are only one or two gum trees on a slope in the distance, which are at a standstill
like lifeless soldiers.
Are we there yet? Someone from behind me asks the teacher. The teacher ignores the comment
thinking that that would put a stop to it but instead for a solid five minutes they keep ask non stop.
Finally, the teacher responds to them with a stern yet aggravated voice, We will get there when we
get there but for now BE QUIET.

We sit in the bus for a while for the bus driver to come back and to tell us what had happened and
why we stopped. To pass my time, I stare out in the window and distract myself. For once I can
concentrate. I notice the bright blue sky that hangs over the emptiness of the bare open flatness
which stretches out, over the horizon. Its rugged beauty is like looking at a child s painting where
at first glance, it s nothing more than lines and colours but when you pay close attention you can
see its beauty described through the imagination of the artist. On the wide spread landscape, you
can see the animals roaming about almost like their trying to escape the harsh and unforgiving sun.
The driver comes back. He tries to explain that a part of the bus is broken down due to nearly
collapsing into the tree.
One of the students suggests to push the bus or to walk all the way to Bourke, but the driver
disagreed and said that the wouldn t even be able to make it halfway with the scorching sun glaring
down at us.
For a moment, everyone is trying to come up with a solution to get us out of here. I propose the
idea to communicate with another bus driver nearby, to the teacher. She then goes to tell the

Learning Online And Traditional Classroom Setting
During my educational journey I have experienced learning online and in a traditional classroom
setting. Working in a classroom allowed me to receive a more hands on approach with my
learning from my instructor. Learning in person helped me to seek help if I was confused, ask
questions, and receive a response immediately. Upon completing my work assignments, I was
able to work side by side with my classmates and collaborate, and work as a team. Most
importantly, everything is at your fingertips such as your class material and a physical textbook. In
addition, in a classroom setting you are able to take quizzes and tests that will help you retain the
information by answering the questions.
However, learning online is totally a different ball game. When learning online most of the time
there is no test or quizzes involved, you work at your own pace, and the only material you will
need is your computer. Working at your own pace helps because, it allows you to work ahead
and complete your assignments according to your own schedule and not having to wait on your
instructor. A great advantage to learning online is, not having to travel to a physical classroom.
Your work is available at any time of the day. Everything I needed was in my computer so I didn t
have to keep up with any material or purchase any. However, learning online, helps you to focus
more with fewer distractions around you, but leaves you limitless to help when you need it.

Slavery Tribulation In American History
Throughout World History, many atrocious and abominable things have happened to human beings
throughout time. Babies have been slaughtered in wars, people have been killed by severe natural
disasters, and people have even been eaten by cannibals. But nothing seems to come close in
comparison to the Transatlantic Slave Trade and what those people had to toil through. They were
mercilessly beaten, branded, and even considered less than human by their fellow humans. The
slaves of this horrific time in American History, from the 1400s to the 1860s, went through possibly
the worst tribulation in human history. Although slaverywas more of an economic institution, was
the brutal treatment of slaves in the Americas necessary to keep them in line?... Show more content

These sadistic practices were needed to make sure that the slaves made it to their final
destination alive, whether or not they were in the best shape. Although the women were not
chained down like the men, they were horribly abused by the slave traders. The traders were
allowed to rape them which led to the women committing suicide by jumping overboard and
drowning. Rape was not necessary to scare those people into submission. Slave traders went
beyond what was necessary to keep slaves. Although at some points the slaves fought back and
rebelled, the treatment of the slaves on ships broke them down psychologically and physically.
Robert Walsh reports that The height sometimes between decks was only eighteen inches, so
[they] could not turn round or even on their sides [because] the elevation [was] less than the
breadth of their shoulders; and here they are usually chained to the decks by the neck and legs.
This made the conditions so bad that many of the enslaved people would try to kill each other by
strangulation or stabbing nails into each other s heads in order to make more space for themselves .
Slave traders believed that these inhumane conditions were the appropriate way to transfer these
people because they did not think that they were fellow human

Howard Schultz Strategy with Starbucks
When Howard Schultz first experienced Starbucks Coffee, Tea and Spice he was immediately
smitten by the operations and business culture, and actively pursued a job with them. At that time,
Starbucks Coffee, Tea and Spice was an 11 year old coffee shop with six stores in Seattle
specializing in high quality coffeebeans. StarbucksCoffee, Tea and Spice desired to bring fine
coffee to their customers, so to that end, they imported quality coffee beans, roasted them to their
own exacting specifications and sold the beans and high end coffeemakers to their customers, so
customers could make superb coffee at home. The only coffee brewed onsite was the sampling of a
roast, in order for a customer to determine if they wanted to buy that... Show more content on

Starbucks discovered that the connections we make in communities create[d] a loyal following.
(starbucks.com) Customers spent afternoons at Starbucks. They brought their work to Starbucks.
They dated at Starbucks. And they came back! Sometimes daily.
Schultz s strategy was a success. Starbucks became the number 1 retailer of specialty coffees.
When Schultz took a break from everyday operations as CEO in 2000, Starbucks had grown to
3,501 stores. What a growth from a start of 11 stores and 100 employees in 1987.
Two CEOs followed Schultz s tenure and Jim Donald, the second one, put increasing the number
of stores and store efficiencies as his strategy above customer service driving the business.
Complaints surfaced that Starbucks felt more like a fast food restaurant than a coffeehouse. (New
York Times ~ Business Day, 2012) This pursuit, along with the Great Recession, created havoc in
Starbucks finances, driving stock price from a high of $40 (5/1/2006) to $8 (11/17/2008). (Living
Economics) At that point, the Board ousted Jim Donald and asked Schultz to come back as CEO
and lead a major restructuring and revitalization initiative. (Thompson amp; Shah, 2010)
Just like the first time he walked into Starbucks in 1981, Schultz wanted to be transported by the
aromas and the ambience. He found the corporation he came back to missing those points. Making
of breakfast sandwiches, added to compete with

The Rise Of Birth Control
In 1965, President Johnson said, Less than five dollars invested in population control is worth a
hundred dollars invested in economic growth (Bailey, 2013). The rise of contraception in the
United States was controversial and highly debated in court. But, once the movement got rolling, it
was hard to stop. When a Gallop Poll in 1936 asked if United States citizens favor the birth control
movement, 61 percent answered yes. This was a shocking discovery, because until that time
contraception seemed like a taboo topic. Today, the manufacturing and selling of birth control is
legal in all 50 states. Family planning services are now subsidized by federal and state governments
and nonprofit and private organizations (Goldin and Katz, 2000). This nationwide movement
enables women to choose when they start families. By allowing women to have the authority to
utilize contraception, positive trends have been seen in economic advancement, education
attainment and population trends.
The Rise of Birth Control The first oral contraception, Envoid, was introduced in 1957. Although
introduced, state laws prohibited physicians from prescribing the Pill and pharmacists from selling
it. Fifty years ago, two major shifts in the access to birth control occurred. In 1965, the trial
Griswold versus Connecticut ended restrictions on the sale of contraceptives. Secondly, federal
government boosted funding for family planning from 1964 to 1973, these changes are still making
a positive impact

Examples Of Cross Cultural Conflict In The Tiger s Daughter
Introduction The Tiger s Daughter by Bharati Mukherjee is a realistic novel of the dual culture
based identity of the author who faces the mental duality due to the changes in the culture in the
long left India. She found difficult to adapt to the culture, customs, and traditions, which she depicts
through her female protagonists cultural crisis. The proposed study is an attempt to throw light on
to the cross cultural conflict of the 22 year old Tara when she revisits India after a seven year stay
in the United States. It highlights the cultural turmoil faced by Tara when she refuses to accept
Calcutta as her home again. This study also attempts to portray how the novelist herself intimately
projects her own self through the novel. The Tiger s Daughter and wife are about two different
problems of expatriates. The Tiger s Daughter, Mukherjee s first novel, is about the cross cultural

The Healthcare Industry of America; An investigative look...
The Healthcare Industry of America: An investigative look at HMO s
It s no secret that Health Maintenance Organizations, known as HMO s, have made healthcare
affordable for many Americans, but at what risks? Most employers offer some type of health care
plan that is an HMO. Let s face it, given the choice among insurance coverage through your
employer, in which he pays half the costs, or acquiring private insurance coverage outside your
employer, most Americans choose to go with employer provided HMO s. Why then, has there been
so much controversy with HMO s?
An HMO is an organization whereby the subscriber, or patient, is allowed to choose a medical
provider from a list of doctors within a certain medical group. Each physician ... Show more content

This process could take weeks due to cumbersome paperwork and the limited number of specialist
per each group or health plan. Again, many doctors only accept these plans to supplement their
practices. It is common for them to stop accepting your HMO after only a few years which leaves
the patient a choice of either paying cash, or changing doctors or insurance companies. One can see
why this might be a frustrating process.
Managed care reduces cost by keeping a pool of doctors and specialist to a minimum, and at the
same time keeping the volume of patients high. This often means that a patient may not receive the
same amount of attention and care as they should, or were accustomed to. Consumers have long
grumbled that HMO s have done too much too keep health costs down by stinting on patient
care.(1).
Healthcare expenditures have more than doubled since 1965. Americans spend over a trillion
dollars a year on health care. (2). As of 1996, 110 million Americans were enrolled in HMO s.
More than three fourths of all individuals in HMO s are covered by job based insurance. More
than 13 million Medicaid recipients have been put into managed care plans. Managed care and
HMO s have been the subject of many negative stories in the press and are constantly being charged
with endangering the health and lives of their enrollees. As a result, congressional hearing, state,
and federal regulation, and action by the

Comparison Of Catch-22 And Joseph Heller s Idea Of War
What s the Catch?: An Examination of Catch 22 and Joseph Heller s Idea of War Joseph Heller s
Catch 22 is a comical novel of bombardier named Yossarian and his attempt to escape the war
effort of War World II. The novel does not contain a linear plot, which creates some confusion and
uncertainty in the story. Also, the conclusion is not a complete resolution, as Yossarian
finally
manages to escape to Sweden by the end of novel, but that is not the resolution to the war.
Therefore, if Yossarian escaping the war is not the ultimate objective of Catch 22, then what is
Heller trying to convey in his novel? In Catch 22, Heller strives to have his audience understand the
realities of war, which includes the corruption of authority, absurdity,... Show more content on

What did matter was that everyone thought it existed and that was much worse... , since Catch 22 is
not real but people believe it is, it cannot be altered. (Heller 409) Heller also uses Catch 22 to
demonstrate the corruption of authority in war, for example, Colonel Cathcart is responsible for
the number of missions his squadron must fly but under Catch 22 he can continue to raise the
number of missions without a concrete reason. Heller further elaborates on the corruption of
authority in war through other elements of the novel. The hierarchy of authority in Catch 22 is
parallel to a military chain of commands, general, captain, private and etc, but one particular
character holds much more power than his authoritative title grants him, that is Ex. PFC
Wintergreen, a multi demoted private who is in charge of distribution and communication.
Wintergreen is the lowest of low, yet he is able to alter documents and mail to cause
miscommunication between generals and higher ups. Through the ironic characterization of
Wintergreen, Heller conveys that the title position and its authority does not always correspond to
its proportional amount power. Most of the men in high command are selfish and are only
interested in themselves. As Colonel Cathcart expresses ambition to ascend up the authorial ladder,
he continues to increase

Ada Lovelace born Augusta Ada King Noel, Countess of Lovelace in 1815 is widely considered
to the world s first programmer. Being the daughter of the famous poet Lord Byron and Lady
Byron, Ada Lovelace was afforded the ability to study math and science from a young age. This
was a rare affordance, even for women from aristocratic families. At 17, Ada met another famous
figure of computer science, Charles Babbage, who helped shape the work she would do.
Unfortunately, Ada spent much of her life in poor health due to contracting cholera at the age of

Science Stemming from Cellular Research Since the discovery of stem cells, scientist have been
studying new ways
Scientists have been using stem cells since their discovery to improve research and treatments. One
type of organ improvement stem cells have played an important part in recently is the heart. There
can now be a reduction in cardiovascular disease morbidity rates through the utilization of stem
cells, and worrying about compatibility and time can become a thing of the past. Through the use
of stem cells, repair, rehabilitation, and transplant can help or even cure myocardial necrosis. A

For example, scientists at the Texas Heart Institute extracted stem cells and anti inflammitory from
fat tissue from a patient that had had a myocardial infarction. Scientists then injected the stem cells
into the damaged area of the heart. They then studied patients with stem cell injections and without
stem cell injections. From baseline to six months, they noticed patients without stem cells damage
area increased by 5.1%, and patients with stem cells damage area decreased by 3% (Texas Heart).
This study had positive affects, as did a similar one. Other scientists induced rats to have myocardial
infarctions. They then extracted cardiac stem cells from the rats themselves and injected them back
into the damaged area of the heart. Mortality rates decreased, and scientists noticed the aortic and
myocardial walls became thicker to protect themselves from future problems (Beltrami, Barlucchi,
Torella). From the use of stem cells, cardiovascular repair can greatly decrease mortality rates and
increase quality of life for survivors. After patients have gone through heart disease, like any other
injury, therapeutic steps must be taken. Therapy and rehabilitation of damaged hearts has been
improved through the utilization of stem cells. Therapy includes strengthening of the damaged area
as to prevent the incident from reoccurring and getting the patient back to their normal life.
Scientists, again, used rats that had had induced myocardial infarctions. This

The strength of Khattam Shud s shadow, explained according to Mudra when he says, In the land
of Chup, a shadow very often has a stronger personality than the person, or self, or substance to
whom or to which it is joined (pg 132), can serve as a parallel to modern governments who have a
ruler with more power then the government itself. In Haroun, Khattam Shud represents the
government and his shadow, the ruler. We see this in the way of the government does not have
as much power as the individual ruler or the shadow. Along with being stronger, according to
Mudra shadows can change shape, and living in the dark, a Shadow doesn t have to be one
single shape all the time. Some Shadows... learn how to change ourselves (pg 132). This serves as
a parallel to the same government in the way in which the powerful ruler can morph or change the
rules, laws, and pretty much anything they wants because of their immense power, something the
regular people, or the government, are unable to do. These aspects add to the danger of the
shadows because it adds power to them and with great power can come great danger. For instance,

As a research from International Journal of Business and Management about a company stopped its
automatic salary increments says that the employees of the company were not happy with that
scheme and the company tries to give training to them about that bonus scheme. So the company
ordered all the HODs (Head of Departments) to educate their respective departments on the benefits
of the new bonus scheme. After the training those employees get enough education about the new
bonus system and they agreed to the new system. And they were motivated to work harder
(Akinlolu Ayodeji Agboola amp; Rafiu Oyesola Salawu 2011).
Participation can be used to satisfy the workers, as when workers are participated and involved
in decision making process then they will have understanding that the organization needs them
and value their work. If the people actively participate they will be more likely to feel ownership
of the change and will be less likely to resist. When the employees are involved and participated in
planning and implementing the change process will have better understanding towards the
changes. Participation of managers and employees to the change approach will be able to manage
resistance to change quicker (Rosemond Boohene amp; Asamoah Appiah Williams 2012). When
employees are involved in the change effort they are more likely to buy into change rather than
resist it. This approach is likely to lower resistance

Prescription Drug Abuse And Prescription Drugs
Prescription Drug Abuse Prescription Drug Abuse has increased in an alarming rate over recent
years! Prescription drug related deaths now outnumber those from heroin and cocaine combined.
The abuse in prescription drugs in America goes back more than a hundred years ago. Prescription
drug abuse is the use of a medication without a prescription, in a way other than prescribed, or for
the experience or feelings elicited. Although prescription medications are intended to help
individuals, they can sometimes become addictive and can induce serious side effects, changes in
behavior, and even death. From personal experience I know how dangerous Prescription Drug
Abusecan be. When I was younger, my brother Clay overdosed on Prescription Drugs. He went to
a pharm party, also known as a pill party. He was found passed out in a bedroom, and was put in
a car and taken to the hospital. He was then found to have no heartbeat and they had to cut off his
clothes and had to do the difibulizer. He is now in rehab doing much better. Everyday in the United
States 2,500 youth abuse a prescription pain reliever for the first time. Prescription drugabuse, while
most prevalent in the U.S., is a problem in many areas around the world including Europe, Southern
Africa, and Freesmeier 2

Sympathy For The Devil Summary
The scholarly article Sympathy For The Devil by Lin Haire Sargeant was a very informative and
persuasive article. This article focused on the evaluation of the movies of Wuthering Heights, and
the differences between the characters, more specifically Heathcliff. It talked about how most of
the movies made the viewer have sympathy for the devil, or sympathy for Heathcliff. In the first
movie that was spoken about, the 1939 adaption, they portray Heathcliff not as the one who is
sinning, but the one who has been sinned upon. She states that this movie almost makes it seem
that Heathcliff is really a good guy, but he has just had a streak of bad luck. Her evaluation of
Heathcliff in this matter is very persuasive, and since I have not seen any of the movies,... Show

In the next movie evaluation, the spanish adaption is mentioned from 1954. In this adaption, the
author of the article shows the sympathy for Heathcliff through the dislike of Edgar. In this
movie apparently, Edgar is displayed as a cruel man, and his symbolism through insects is a lot
harsher and worse than Heathcliff s symbolism of light. I agree with the author s evaluation in
the fact that this symbolism makes the viewer more sympathetic towards Heathcliff than Edgar.
In the 1970 version, Lin Haire Sargeant makes a point to evaluate the tidiness of not only the set,
but the cast and the clothing also. She says that this adaption has Heathcliff more as an Edgar
type, which could contribute to sympathy the viewers have for Heathcliff. I do agree with this. In
the more modern cinema, people like to see more clean, presentable people, and the cleaner and
cookie cutter they are, the more the viewers will like them. This was a very good and effective
point to bring up in this article, because I would not have previously thought of evaluating this type
of thing

How Does Edna Committed Suicide
In 1898 Kate Chopin wrote a novel titled The Awakening that took place in a Louisiana Setting.
The main character Edna experiences an awakening physically and emotionally. The ending to
Chopin s novel is ambiguous and leaves the reader to make their own conclusion as to whether
Edna committed suicide willingly or not. By Edna committing suicide, it can be justified as a way
for her to escape from the society in which she lives and the situations she faces.
In the beginning of Chopin s novel the setting starts in Grand Isle, Louisiana and gradually changes
to New Orleans, Louisiana. During the time Chopin wrote the novel women were suppose to be
motherly and submissive to their husbands. Edna did not posses either of those characteristics and
was not considered a mother woman (Chopin 9) and she longed for a life that she would struggle
to have. Edna went through many stages to reach the freedom she wanted. Chopin used symbols
such as the Caged Bird in the beginning of the novel to represent Edna. A Green and Yellow

Romeo And Juliet Essay On Death
Throughout the play Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare shows Romeo s infatuation with two things:
death, and Juliet, one overpowering the other. Romeo is suicidal; everything related to eternal
rest peaks his interest. Juliet causes Romeo to die which reveals that Juliet did what death itself
could not. She helped Romeo forget about the harsh realities of the world, whereas death allowed
Romeo an option in the end where he could be alongside his one and only true love. Whether it be

I am content, so thou wilt have it so/Come, death, and welcome! Juliet wills it so (3.5.17 18 and
24). Romeo is content with dying if Juliet wills it so. This brings light to the fact that Romeo
does not worry about himself or about anything other than Juliet when he is with her. When he
goes to Mantua, Romeo quickly becomes depressed. He complains that, heaven is here, where
Juliet lives, and every cat and dog and little mouse, every unworthy thing, live here in heaven
and may look on her, but Romeo may not (3.3.29 32). Romeo reveals that anywhere outside
Verona is a place of purgatory if the unworthiest of creatures are able to gaze upon Juliet s beauty
while he is stuck in Mantua. As a result, he believes that the banishment is worse than dying as
he is tortured by the fact that he may never be able to see her again without the risk of being
killed. The only way for Romeo to be together with Juliet is through the means of dying. As
Romeo heard of Juliet s deceasement, he rushes to go to Verona despite the evident threat to his
life, with poison, to kill himself alongside Juliet. He kills himself just before Juliet woke up.
Juliet then kills herself so that they may be together in the afterlife regardless of if it is hell or
heaven. Suicide is considered an utmost sin in Christianity and by killing himself, he rescinded his
beliefs and religion to be with the one he loved. They both revoke their religion in order to be with

Analysis Of The Village Of The Mermaids
Delvaux s painting consist of a eight nearly identical woman sitting in chairs outside the
doorways of grey rowhomes which head down a thin, long road. Towards the background of the
painting, the houses are replaced by a lengthy, white wall and the road starts to bend
dramatically. At the bend there is a black hatted man walking away from the viewer and on the
other side of the wall there are mermaids. Both the man and the mermaids are miniscule due to the
extended perspective of the painting. The Village of The mermaids is confusing for many
reasons. It has no central subject and uses size and perspective to minimize key figures and
symbols that help the viewer form a holistic conclusion about it s meaning. The Village of the
Mermaids is not unlike a hydra, for every question answered two arise in its place. The painting has
mysterious, eerie sentiment that plays on the viewer s discomfort with the unknown. The Village of
the Mermaids uses subtly unconventional geometry and positioning to achieve contradictory
symbolism and ultimately a sense of discombobulation, but Mueller s poetic analysis of the the
painting fails to capture the full depth of this state of quiet disarray because people often feel the
need to ground surrealist work in reality.
The author begins her poem with the question ... ( author, Line number) this figure has a unique
symbolic value as he is one of the few things in the painting that isn t replicated. His singularity is
one of the only attempts the composition makes to draw attention to him. It s apparent that The
artist seeks to minimize the man s presence using compositional tools like placement and depth
of field. In the scale of the painting the man only occupies a miniscule amount of space. He is
placed in just close enough for the viewer to clearly identify him as a man wearing a black hat
and a coat. In a more subtle attempt to reduce the man s visibility, the artist arranges various
guiding lines to direct the eye away from the man. Perhaps the most profound example of this can
be found in the sky s color gradient, which creates intense depth that directs the viewer towards the
horizon line and away from the position of the man. For all of it neglect, the painting does

How Subliminal Messaging Affects Consumer Behavior
How Subliminal Messaging Affects Consumer Behavior
The subject of subliminal messaging in relation to consumer behavior presents an interesting
dichotomy between the scientific community and the general public. The purpose of this paper is
to discover what, if any, effect subliminal messaging has on consumer behavior, as well as shed
light on the differing positions regarding this controversial subject, and provide a brief historical
background on the material.
Before the topic of subliminal messaging can be addressed, one must first understand subliminal
perception. Subliminal perception is defined as the processing of stimuli presented below the level
of the consumer s awareness. (Solomon, p.629) Subliminal messaging is ... Show more content on

The statements made by Keys in concert with the findings of Vicary would appear to paint a
very clear picture of subversive forces at work compelling the consumer to make purchasing
decisions that are driven by inexplicable urges outside of their conscious realm. The scientific
facts, however, indicate that much of the positions of Keys and Vicary are, at best, hyperbole. The
president of the Psychological Corporation, Dr. Henry Link challenged Vicary to reproduce his
findings in another study, but Vicary was not able to do this. (Adams) Since Vicary made his
claims about projected messages, his claims have failed to stand up to scientific scrutiny. Research
has shown that strong stimuli yields strong response, and the weaker stimuli produce the weakest
responses. (Rogers, p. 15) Furthermore, Vicary admitted in 1962 interview with Advertiser Age
magazine that the entire program had been nothing more than a gimmick. (Danzig) It is estimated
that Vicary had made millions of dollars from working as a consultant during his В‘research.
(Rogers, p. 15)
Dr. Key s positions were not above critical review from his peers as well. Jack Haberstroh took Key
s hypothesis to task in his book Ice Cube Sex when he states, Subliminal advertising does not affect

Correlation Between Age Structure And The Level Of Mortality
The value of 0.000681 found for the micro region of SГЈo Paulo can be broken down into 0.001602

the effect of the interaction between age structure and the level of mortality.
Figures 2 (effect of age structure) and 3 (effect of mortality level) present the results of the
decomposition for the 2006 2010 period for males. We use them to answer the following question:
which contribution is greater, that from changes in the level of mortality or that from changes in
the age distribution of the population? If the contribution of the mortality level is higher than that
estimated for the changes in the age structure, then variables that affect the level of cardiovascular
mortality, such as socioeconomic, environmental, cultural and behavioral conditions, for example,
can represent some of the main risk factors for deaths from cardiovascular disease. In this case, the
age structure contributes less to fall than other associated factors. Otherwise, that is, the
participation of the age structure prevail on the level of mortality, the importance of the first to
explain the variation between the crude mortality rates would be higher than the second. Check and

Compare And Contrast Paleolithic And Neolithic
Historians have many ideas which differ but all divide history into two periods, the Paleolithic
Period and the Neolithic Period. In the Paleolithic period, there was little to no evidence of political
activities and a government, while the Neolithic period had agriculture which led to advancements
in political structures, activities, etc., increase of populations and the creation of professional
managers. There is also a difference in economy as seen when the Paleolithicpeople had a foraging
economy while the Neolithicpeople had an agriculture economy which allowed the creation of
specialized jobs and large systems of trade. The Paleolithic people also had a religion where they
worshipped Venus figurines in hope of fertility and painted

Vitamin C Scurvy
C.Scurvy
Scurvy is less likely differential diagnosis that may be associated with the signs and symptoms of
this patient. Scurvy is associated with a state of dietary deficiency of vitamin C. Although it is
uncommon, it still occurs and can affect children who have chronic dietary vitamin C deficiency.
Vitamin C is relevant for the triple helix formation of collagen; a vitamin C deficiency results in
impaired collagen synthesis, which typically typical manifest by poor wound healing that is noted
in collagen tissues and in organs such as skin, cartilage, dentine, osteoid, and capillary blood
vessels (McCance Huether, 2014). Pathologic changes in affected children are associated with bone

The disorder is a syndrome that is found in newborns and children that consisted of osteoporosis
with fractures and skeletal deformities (Mccance Huether, 2014). Its classification is based on
both inheritance and clinical findings. In the most severe form of this disorder, the child is
usually stillborn or dies soon after birth, but some may survive into childhood. In its more severe
forms the signs and symptoms are evident at birth because fractures and deformity have occurred
in utero. The less severe forms may be evident until the child starts to walk. Clinical
manifestations of this disease are osteoporosis and increased rate of fractures, possible bony
deformation, triangular faces, possible vascular weakness, possible blue sclera, and poor dentition
(McCance Huether, 2014). The main errors in this disease is due to the synthesis of collagen, a
triple helix that contains two matching alpha chains and one beta chain. Collagen is mostly present
in bone, cartilage, eye tissue, skin, and the vascular system. The severity of this disorder
phenotype along the related anomalies are primarily dependent on the severity of the genetic
anomaly and the part of the triple helix that is affected (Greeley, et al., 2013). Moreover,

Technology Assisted Reproduction Essay
Technology Assisted Reproduction
Introduction
Reproduction is fundamental for the perpetuation of a species and therefore is a trait all species
possess. Human reproduction is usually not viewed in this context. Extinction of humans is not
considered a threat, but the ability to reproduce is an issue of meeting social expectations.
Psychologist Dr. Helen Fisher states that society tends to pressure women into feeling that
motherhood is their sole connection to being female (Rutter, 1996). Likewise, men are influenced
by society into feeling that they need to perform their part by planting the seed (Rutter, 1996).
Fisher s insight may only represent parts of the reason humans feel the need to reproduce. However,
it is evident that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Both sexes seem to be more than adequately equipped by biology for parenthood. However,
infertility affects 12% of American couples or approximately 4.5 million couples a year (Fertility,
1998).
Infertility is technically defined as the inability to conceive after having regular intercourse for
one year without using any form of birth control. Surprisingly, the odds against conception are
strong most of the time. A woman has just a 20 35% chance of conceiving during each menstrual
cycle, even at the peak of fertility (Infertility, 1996). These odds decline slightly in the women s
late 20 s and early 30 s and more sharply after the age 35. Male fertility also decreases with age,
although more slowly than female fertility.
Fertility is impaired in as many men as women. The problem lies within the man a third of the
time, another third of the time within the women, and the remaining third is usually a combination
of the two (Youngkin, 1997). Health professionals emphasize the need for infertile couples to
recognize the problem as our problem instead of mine or your problem. It is less emotionally
damaging this way. For these reasons, both partners should be evaluated when a decision is made to
make an attempt at conceiving.
Common Causes of Infertility
There are many known causes of infertility. In men, low sperm count and poor sperm motility are
usually the culprits. An undescended testicle or dilated veins in the scrotum both contribute to

Douglas Mawson Contributions
I believe that Douglas Mawson endured the most adversity while contributing to science, he
suffered in many ways, including losing his friends and his sled dogs, he also had a lack of food
and energy, and lastly he had his soles of his feet were actually beginning to fall off. The seasoned
explorer, Douglas Mawsonhad suffered a lot through his race; he contributed to science, yet still
was able to survive. Henrietta Lacks had her cells taken for scientific purposes without permission
from her family. Phineas Gagesurvived an extreme dynamite accident which resulted in him
having a hole in his head made by an iron rod. Although you can make a good argument on who
endured the most adversity while contributing to science, Douglas Mawson did suffer a lot; and
there are many ways to support it. Mawson suffered in tons of ways while he was in the race.
The first way he suffered is that he lost his two close friends and his sled dogs which caused him
to grieve, this slowed him down in the race. In the article it states at 2 a.m. on January 8, Mertz
died in his sleep. Mawson buried his friend, still in the sleeping bag, beneath a mound of snow
blocks at atop. While he was busy grieving, it slowed him down a lot and distracted him from the
race. The second way he suffered is from lack of food. When you do not eat you get hungry and
start to lose energy, this just made him slow down in the race even more. The third way that he

What Happens During A Retreatment
A root canal retreatment is very similar to a root canal treatment. The area around the affected
tooth will be numbed and dental dam will be placed in your mouth in order to stabilize the surgery
location.
The biggest different between a retreat and a regular root canal occurs during the next step. Any
crowns, posts or filling material that have been installed in your tooth will need to be removed.
The first time your tooth was worked on, there should not have been any crowns or posts to
remove. This adding process makes the retreatment process a little longer than the original process.
Next, any additional material that may obstruct the dentist from doing their job will be removed
with a very small tool that vibrates loose any additional tooth debris. Then, your dentist will use
very small tools in order to clean out all of your roots. If you have any curves or twists in your

Short Story On Seeing The 100 % Perfect Girl One Beautiful...
On Seeing The 100% Perfect Girl One Beautiful April Morning, the protagonist was a young
Japanese man who didn t know how to approach a girl who he believed is perfect. The reason I
choose this story is that I went through a similar event my first year in college. The only
difference is I didn t have the guts to ask the girl out. Tell you the truth, she s not that good
looking. She doesn t stand out in any way. Her clothes are nothing special. The back of her hair
is still bent out of shape from sleep . (Literature, Murakami, page 143) My first year at UCR I
had a crush on a girl by the name of Sage. She was short, pretty, and had an amazing personality.
One of my friends Roger told me Adrian what are you thinking, this girl is ugly, she s like 4 out
of 10 even you can do better. I told Roger that I don t know what is but there something special
about this girl that makes me want her. I couldn t figure it out, if her smile, voice, personality,
looks or just being able to spend time and talk to her. As the quarters went by I didn t think I
have a chance with a girl like her since she was really bright. She used to tutor me during World
Politics and always did much better than me during the exams. When the second quarter came I
didn t see her at all, it was during the first day of spring quarter where I saw her again. I was

Gimpel the Fool
The Pain in a Simple Man s Life
Primary motives are described as needs that a person must meet in order to survive. The most
widely recognized of these motives are the needs for food, water, sleep, air, and regulation of body
temperature. However, one motive that is commonly overlooked by society is that of pain
avoidance. The undesired pain may be stemmed from either physical or emotional situations or a
combination of the two. If one is not prepared to eliminate the source of the pain, then he/she may
choose to ignore the painful situation rather than allow him/herself to become upset. The character

life, even if the happiness is at his personal expense.
Gimpel avoids pain not only from the townspeople, but from his wife as well. His wife, Elka, is
a very promiscuous woman by nature and she chooses to be unfaithful to Gimpel. However
again, Gimpel chooses to evade the truth of the matter to keep from being hurt. One way he
[Gimpel] shows the reader how he avoids emotional pain is when he caught Elka in bed with
another man. At first, he could not accept what his wife was doing to their marriage and his
reputation. However as the pain of being alone increased each day, Gimpel decides to forget the
entire incident and forces himself to lie about what he saw. Gimpel says to himself, Hallucinations
do happen. And if that s so, I m doing her [his wife] an injustice, proving that he twists the truth into
something that he can accept (416). Gimpel s mind works in a way that he allows himself to think
that he is suffering from a kind of dementia to avoid the painful truth regarding his wife. He also
avoids the embarrassment and humiliation of recognizing that the children are not his. Elka had
birthed six children, none of which had been fathered by Gimpel. Gimpel knows that the children

Noam Chomsky Consent
Journal on The Manufacture of Consent
In Noam Chomsky s film I have learned quite a few things about life in a
democratic society. This film has made think in a three dimensional way for whom is
really right, Noam Chomsky or those who he calls quot;Elites quot;. I have come to the
conclusion that Noam Chomsky is right, for his claim is very convincing which is
that the media is controlled by the elites who determine what the public should
know. How exactly does Chomsky prove all this to make sense? Well, he
explained that the governments, corporations and the other elites manufacture the
consent of the public to serve their own interests.

Joe will let the elites control on what they hear and how they will be controlled

Another thing I would like to talk about is that Noam Chomsky is a type of
person who wont let nothing get in his way, for example: It was said that he risked
his career and life for the sake of other people. This is one of the reasons why I
would respect him. He could have put his whole family down the drain, but
somehow he came out on top. I could tell he was a man who is not only itelligent,
but also a man of great courage and caring for those in need, like those of East
Timur. If it wasnt for him, I would bet that more than half the class would of
never heard about what was going on in East Timur. The reason why I believe he
made film was that he wanted to help the people of East Timur or else he wouldn t
have put it on the film. He wanted the viewers to see the tragedy of East Timur,
for he believed that the only way to work out problems was from the outside and
this I think, he meant us the viewers to spread the word for we are a democratic
society and we control the government and not the government control us.

Personification In The Pink Car
In recent generations, typical looks or ideas have dominated fashion. People write about this topic
through articles, newspapers, and papers. While models style and display the most recent styles,
they also represent what women should look like. Not until very recently, people have realized
that not all women look like models, unless they starved themselves or worse. In the poems, Fat is
Not a Fairy Tale and The Pink Car , the authors convey their main message of the poem as the
social aspect of the world and what they believe has the characteristics of the ideal person by using
imagery and personification. Admiration for individuality, a common theme throughout The Pink
Car , is constantly mentioned through the words of the Mark Halliday. Halliday personifies the cars
in the poem as people; specifically focusing in on the pink car. He repeatedly describes the other
cars in a jaundiced way; for example, he would characterize these cars as boisterous, rowdy, and
big. However, he identifies the pink car as disparate, one who does not worry or care about other
cars perspectives. The author wrote, Other cars might honk their horns to seem big // the pink
car doesn t honk and doesn t worry (Halliday 25 26). Halliday symbolizes the car as pink because
society commonly construes the color as feminist, sweet, playful, the color of love, flowers and
romantic. His intention of this poem was to help one find peace within themselves. The author
wanted the reader to see that pointing out one s flaws and blemishes cause people to become
someone who is arrogant and too self confident by referring to the other cars who did not have
the characteristics of the pink car. This poem definitely delineates what one wants to find in
themselves, the satisfaction and happiness they eventually discover. The author characterizes the
pink car with a certain type of satisfaction and pride which helps people look at themselves in a
much more positive and confident way. He wanted people to read this poem, and have people
realize that appearance does not define one s personality. He wanted people to grasp, that in a
similar way, pink should not let society define what it is.

Corn Vs Corn
Although cows evolved to survive on grass, farmers are now feeding them corn for rapid growth
to benefit the U.S. Economy. After six months, calves are weaned off grass, put into pens, and
forced to eat corn. While this does not make sense from an environmental, health, or humane
treatment of animal s viewpoint, economically it does, as a corn enriched diet enables cows to
reach slaughter weight faster and produce more to meet demands. Corn is a cheap commodity to
purchase compared to the farmer s cost to produce. The industrial farmer relies on the large

The introduction of chemical fertilizers and other technological inputs created a surplus of corn on
American farmland. In the early 1900 s farmers were only able to grow small bushels of corn but
today there is an excess amount. Although such an overabundance represented a great achievement
in American agriculture, the excess corn needed some use and one way to reduce overage is to
feed it to farm animals; especially cows. Corn does not require a lot of space to store and it is
extremely easy to collectively feed a considerable number of cows. Feeding cows low priced corn
as required by the Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation s CAFO is economically efficient and
enables the production of large quantities of marbled meat that was once a luxury for many

Human Rights Campaign Analysis
On April 4, 2016 Governor Phil Bryant of Mississippi signed House Bill(HB) 1523 known as the
Protecting Freedom of Conscience from Government Discrimination Act or more popularly known
as the Mississippi religious freedom act. The bill is set to take effect July 1, 2016 and is meeting
criticism nationwide for its alleged legal discriminationof the Lesbian Gay Bisexual
Transgender(LGBT) community. Many are saying that the bill itself is outdated and only further
goes to stimulate hatred and discrimination against a non protected class of people. However, those
in favor of the bill continue to proclaim the bill is meant to safe guard those who do not agree with
the recent ruling of the Supreme Court of the United States(SCOTUS) on gay marriage.... Show

The congressmen of Mississippi represent their constituents whether it be indirectly or directly.
A majority of Mississippians claim to be of the christian faith, which as whole generally does not
believe in same sex marriage. When the SCOTUS ruled to legalize same sex marriage many
people felt that it was not their issue to rule on but rather the states . This being the case, states
that did not currently allow same sex marriage were forced to begin issuing marriage licenses.
This change of law begun to affect the constituents as usually there was a consensus against
same sex marriage. For people who oppose same sex marriage whether it be religious or moral,
we must respect that belief. The idea that as a country we disavow First Amendment rights in
favor to be more inclusive is provoking. The bill clearly states what is and what is not
discrimination, and the belief that marriage is between one man and one woman should not be
considered bigotry if you choose to follow your

Foot Locker Retail, Inc. is an American footwear and sportswear merchandiser that was established
in 1974, but founded as a separate corporation in 1988. Foot Locker s headquarters is located in
Midtown Manhattan, New York City and operates in 23 countries worldwide with over 3,000 stores
located throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.
Foot Locker s full fiscal year ended January 28, 2017. At the end of the fourth quarter, the net
income was $189 million, or $1.42 per share in comparison to the net income of $158 million, or
$1.14 per share of the previous year, 2015. As for the fiscal year results, the sales were $7,766
million for 2016, a 4.8 percent increase from the 2015 sales, which were $7,412 million. The stores

In addition, there are 59 franchised Foot Locker stores operating in South Korea and the Middle
East, as well as 15 franchised Runners Point stores in Germany. Runners Point is a specialty
athletic store and online retailer based in Recklinghausen, Germany. On July 10, 2013, Foot Locker
had announced that is had completed the acquisition of Runners Point Group. 2016 was the seventh
consecutive year of sales growth and profit growth for Foot Locker. After further research, an
interesting fact that I learned is that in 1963, the F.W. WoolworthCompany purchased the Kinney
Shoe Corporation. In the early 1960 s Kinney had branched into various specialty shoe stores,
including Foot Locker. The Woolworth Company incorporated a separate company in 1988, called
the Woolworth Corporation. The new company, Woolworth Corporation was responsible for the
operations of the Foot Locker stores. Being a frequent customer of Foot Locker, it is intriguing to

Tracing Narrative Threads in Life of Pi Essay examples
Tracing Narrative Threads 1) Father s admonitions to stay away from the tiger in the zoo.
During this part of the novel, Pi s father is teaching him a lesson by letting a tiger brutally kill a
goat right in front of him. He is trying to teach Pi to not go near an animal such as tigers because
they are incredibly dangerous. I believe this thread represents the foreshadowing of what is to
come for Pi.
When Pi and Ravi s father was telling them about staying away from tigers he said Tigers are
very dangerous. I want you to understand that you are never under any circumstances to touch a
tiger, to pet a tiger, to put your hands through the bars of a cage, even to get close to a cage. Is that
clear? (37) This evidence indicates that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The name Pi is also symbolic because as Pi stated: I was named after a swimming pool (8) The
word Piscine in French translate to swimming pool in English. The significance of his name is
because he spends 227 days in a huge swimming pool (the ocean) fighting for his life.
The thread develops during the novel because as the novel goes on and he s stuck on the lifeboat,
Pi starts to question who Pi really is. When he starts questioning who he is, he finds it hard to
learn who he truly wants to be. The message the author is trying to get across is be true to
yourself. 3) Young Pi s dedication to three religions
As explained in the book, Pi follows three different religions; Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity. Pi
is extremely interested in all three religions and tries to find himself through religion. Although,
he does not understand why he can t follow all three religions. But he can t be a Hindu, a
Christian and a Muslim. It s impossible. He must choose. (76) This thread represents that he
dedicates himself to the things he believes in and will fight for what he believes in. Even when
his family disagreed with his decision of following all three religions, he still fought for what he
believed.
This thread develops during the novel because while he is on the lifeboat Pi starts questioning who
truly he is and wants to be. The young boy who was once dedicated to vegetarianism, which was
rooted in his religion, must make a life changing decision.

The Aegean Bronze Age Essay
The Aegean Bronze age displayed a proliferation of beliefs manifested in social practices, and
material culture. Among these practices, the display of idols became substantial in epitomizing
social realities. The Minoan civilization, being one of the most momentous urbanization formed
during this period, established the use of icons to exemplify their cultural and societal views.
Emblems in the form of deities, monstrous creatures, hybrids and composites were prominent,
alluding to the ways in which the Minoan populace endured the changing scope of their society. Yet
despite these emblems production, the notion of fantastic beings did not necessarily originate from
Cretealone. More often than not, cultural practices migrated and constantly moved allowing for
adaptations in material culture to materialize. Bearing this in mind, this essay will seek to probe the
ways in which fantastic creatures moved and were adapted in Minoan culture, specifically within
the ritualistic contexts of the Minoan Civilization. Three issues will be investigated by the essay
namely, how fantastic creatures were depicted within the Minoan setting, the roles these icons
played within the context of ritualistic practices of the Minoan period, and how the origins of these
creatures impacted the new society they belonged in.
The spread of material culture in Minoan society fundamentally reflect the ways in which its
citizens moved within their time and space. Various representations of otherworldly

How Did Galileo Contribute To The Scientific Revolution
Galileo was a mathematician, astronomer, physicist, and teacher who played a major role in the
scientific revolution during the Renaissance Era. Galileo put the concepts of experiments, theory
and mathematics together to advance the scientific world. He is often referred to the Father of
Science. Galileo was born February 15, 1564 in Pisa in the Duchy of Florence, Italy. He was the
first of six children born of Giulia Ammannati and Vincenzo Galilei, a musician and music
theorist. His family moved to Florence in 1574 where he started his education at the Camaldolse
Monastery in Vallombrosa. In 1583, Galileo attended the University of Pisa to study medicine; he
was exposed to an Aristotelian view of the world. In 1585, he left the University of Pisa before
earning his degree. After he left, he still continued to study mathematics while he was away from
the university. In 1586, Galileo published his first scientific book, The Little Balance , which
described Archimedes method of finding the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Galileo discovered the principle of inertia. He used the balls rolling on an inclined plane
experiment, which means that the balls on an inclined plan would roll to the same position as
the initial position. Galileo also experimented with free falling objects. Aristotle believed that
when two objects are dropped, the heavier object will hit the ground before the lighter object.
Galileo proved that theory to be incorrect when he dropped objects from the Leaning Tower of
Pisa, and noticed that objects fall to the ground at the same time if air resistance is negligible.
This experiment helped him come up with the concept of acceleration. Galileo also proposed the
first Theory of Relativity and stated that there is no physical way to differentiate between a body
moving at a constant speed and an immobile body. He also attempted to measure the speed of light,
but discovered that light moved to

Generalized Discontinuous PWM for Three Level T NPC Inverters Operating at Low
Modulation Index with Variable Power Factor
Subhadeep Bhattacharya, Student Member, IEEE, Diego Mascarella, Member, IEEE, Geza Joos,
Fellow, IEEE, and Jianhong Xu, Member, IEEE
Abstract Conventional three level discontinuous pulse width modulation (DPWM) techniques are
typically employed in variable frequency drive applications to reduce inverter switching losses and
provide maximum benefit for load power factor angles in the range from 30В° lagging to 30В°
leading. This paper proposes a series of DPWM templates for lower power factors and a
generalized DPWM strategy for three level T NPC inverters operating with modulation indices
lower than 0.5. With a change in the power factor, the proposed strategy adapts the inverter pulse
sequence by combining different portions of the proposed DPWM templates within one
fundamental cycle and ensures minimum switching instances during transitions. Consequently, the
strategy perfectly aligns the no switching durations of the inverter pulse patterns with the
respective load current peaks, achieving a 50% switching loss reduction for all operating power
factor angles (90В° lagging to 90В° leading) at modulation indices lower than 0.5. The paper
provides an analytical evaluation of the proposed strategy on the three level T NPC inverter
switching losses. The simulation and experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the
proposed three level generalized

We have been going so fast that sand particles and rocks are being thrown into the bus by the wind. I look outside only to look at the red rocks and sand of the soil that of which made up the road. There are only one or two gum trees on a slope in the distance, which are at a standstill like lifeless soldiers. Are we there yet? Someone from behind me asks the teacher. Its rugged beauty is like looking at a child s painting where at first glance, it s nothing more than lines and colours but when you pay close attention you can see its beauty described through the imagination of the artist. On the wide spread landscape, you can see the animals roaming about almost like their trying to escape the harsh and unforgiving sun. The driver comes back. He tries to explain that a part of the bus is broken down due to nearly collapsing into the tree. One of the students suggests to push the bus or to walk all the way to Bourke, but the driver disagreed and said that the wouldn t even be able to make it halfway with the scorching sun glaring down at us. • 3. Learning Online And Traditional Classroom Setting During my educational journey I have experienced learning online and in a traditional classroom setting. Working in a classroom allowed me to receive a more hands on approach with my learning from my instructor. Learning in person helped me to seek help if I was confused, ask questions, and receive a response immediately. Upon completing my work assignments, I was able to work side by side with my classmates and collaborate, and work as a team. Most importantly, everything is at your fingertips such as your class material and a physical textbook. In addition, in a classroom setting you are able to take quizzes and tests that will help you retain the information by answering the questions. However, learning online is totally a different ball game. When learning online most of the time there is no test or quizzes involved, you work at your own pace, and the only material you will need is your computer. Working at your own pace helps because, it allows you to work ahead and complete your assignments according to your own schedule and not having to wait on your instructor. A great advantage to learning online is, not having to travel to a physical classroom. Your work is available at any time of the day. Everything I needed was in my computer so I didn t have to keep up with any material or purchase any. However, learning online, helps you to focus more with fewer distractions around you, but leaves you limitless to help when you need it. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Slavery Tribulation In American History Throughout World History, many atrocious and abominable things have happened to human beings throughout time. Babies have been slaughtered in wars, people have been killed by severe natural disasters, and people have even been eaten by cannibals. But nothing seems to come close in comparison to the Transatlantic Slave Trade and what those people had to toil through. They were mercilessly beaten, branded, and even considered less than human by their fellow humans. The slaves of this horrific time in American History, from the 1400s to the 1860s, went through possibly the worst tribulation in human history. Although slaverywas more of an economic institution, was the brutal treatment of slaves in the Americas necessary to keep them in line?... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These sadistic practices were needed to make sure that the slaves made it to their final destination alive, whether or not they were in the best shape. Although the women were not chained down like the men, they were horribly abused by the slave traders. The traders were allowed to rape them which led to the women committing suicide by jumping overboard and drowning. Rape was not necessary to scare those people into submission. Slave traders went beyond what was necessary to keep slaves. Although at some points the slaves fought back and rebelled, the treatment of the slaves on ships broke them down psychologically and physically. Robert Walsh reports that The height sometimes between decks was only eighteen inches, so [they] could not turn round or even on their sides [because] the elevation [was] less than the breadth of their shoulders; and here they are usually chained to the decks by the neck and legs. This made the conditions so bad that many of the enslaved people would try to kill each other by strangulation or stabbing nails into each other s heads in order to make more space for themselves . Slave traders believed that these inhumane conditions were the appropriate way to transfer these people because they did not think that they were fellow human ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Howard Schultz Strategy with Starbucks When Howard Schultz first experienced Starbucks Coffee, Tea and Spice he was immediately smitten by the operations and business culture, and actively pursued a job with them. At that time, Starbucks Coffee, Tea and Spice was an 11 year old coffee shop with six stores in Seattle specializing in high quality coffeebeans. StarbucksCoffee, Tea and Spice desired to bring fine coffee to their customers, so to that end, they imported quality coffee beans, roasted them to their own exacting specifications and sold the beans and high end coffeemakers to their customers, so customers could make superb coffee at home. When Schultz took a break from everyday operations as CEO in 2000, Starbucks had grown to 3,501 stores. What a growth from a start of 11 stores and 100 employees in 1987. Two CEOs followed Schultz s tenure and Jim Donald, the second one, put increasing the number of stores and store efficiencies as his strategy above customer service driving the business. Complaints surfaced that Starbucks felt more like a fast food restaurant than a coffeehouse. (New York Times ~ Business Day, 2012) This pursuit, along with the Great Recession, created havoc in Starbucks finances, driving stock price from a high of $40 (5/1/2006) to $8 (11/17/2008). (Living Economics) At that point, the Board ousted Jim Donald and asked Schultz to come back as CEO and lead a major restructuring and revitalization initiative. • 6. The Rise Of Birth Control In 1965, President Johnson said, Less than five dollars invested in population control is worth a hundred dollars invested in economic growth (Bailey, 2013). The rise of contraception in the United States was controversial and highly debated in court. But, once the movement got rolling, it was hard to stop. When a Gallop Poll in 1936 asked if United States citizens favor the birth control movement, 61 percent answered yes. This was a shocking discovery, because until that time contraception seemed like a taboo topic. Today, the manufacturing and selling of birth control is legal in all 50 states. Family planning services are now subsidized by federal and state governments and nonprofit and private organizations (Goldin and Katz, 2000). This nationwide movement enables women to choose when they start families. By allowing women to have the authority to utilize contraception, positive trends have been seen in economic advancement, education attainment and population trends. The Rise of Birth Control The first oral contraception, Envoid, was introduced in 1957. Although introduced, state laws prohibited physicians from prescribing the Pill and pharmacists from selling it. Fifty years ago, two major shifts in the access to birth control occurred. In 1965, the trial Griswold versus Connecticut ended restrictions on the sale of contraceptives. Secondly, federal government boosted funding for family planning from 1964 to 1973, these changes are still making a positive impact ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. The Healthcare Industry of America; An investigative look... The Healthcare Industry of America: An investigative look at HMO s It s no secret that Health Maintenance Organizations, known as HMO s, have made healthcare affordable for many Americans, but at what risks? Most employers offer some type of health care plan that is an HMO. Let s face it, given the choice among insurance coverage through your employer, in which he pays half the costs, or acquiring private insurance coverage outside your employer, most Americans choose to go with employer provided HMO s. Why then, has there been so much controversy with HMO s? An HMO is an organization whereby the subscriber, or patient, is allowed to choose a medical provider from a list of doctors within a certain medical group. Each physician ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This process could take weeks due to cumbersome paperwork and the limited number of specialist per each group or health plan. Again, many doctors only accept these plans to supplement their practices. It is common for them to stop accepting your HMO after only a few years which leaves the patient a choice of either paying cash, or changing doctors or insurance companies. One can see why this might be a frustrating process. Managed care reduces cost by keeping a pool of doctors and specialist to a minimum, and at the same time keeping the volume of patients high. This often means that a patient may not receive the same amount of attention and care as they should, or were accustomed to. Consumers have long grumbled that HMO s have done too much too keep health costs down by stinting on patient care.(1). Healthcare expenditures have more than doubled since 1965. Americans spend over a trillion dollars a year on health care. (2). As of 1996, 110 million Americans were enrolled in HMO s. What did matter was that everyone thought it existed and that was much worse... , since Catch 22 is not real but people believe it is, it cannot be altered. (Heller 409) Heller also uses Catch 22 to demonstrate the corruption of authority in war, for example, Colonel Cathcart is responsible for the number of missions his squadron must fly but under Catch 22 he can continue to raise the number of missions without a concrete reason. Heller further elaborates on the corruption of authority in war through other elements of the novel. The hierarchy of authority in Catch 22 is parallel to a military chain of commands, general, captain, private and etc, but one particular character holds much more power than his authoritative title grants him, that is Ex. PFC Wintergreen, a multi demoted private who is in charge of distribution and communication. Wintergreen is the lowest of low, yet he is able to alter documents and mail to cause miscommunication between generals and higher ups. Through the ironic characterization of Wintergreen, Heller conveys that the title position and its authority does not always correspond to its proportional amount power. It talked about how most of the movies made the viewer have sympathy for the devil, or sympathy for Heathcliff. In the first movie that was spoken about, the 1939 adaption, they portray Heathcliff not as the one who is sinning, but the one who has been sinned upon. In the next movie evaluation, the spanish adaption is mentioned from 1954. In this adaption, the author of the article shows the sympathy for Heathcliff through the dislike of Edgar. I agree with the author s evaluation in the fact that this symbolism makes the viewer more sympathetic towards Heathcliff than Edgar. In the 1970 version, Lin Haire Sargeant makes a point to evaluate the tidiness of not only the set, but the cast and the clothing also. She says that this adaption has Heathcliff more as an Edgar type, which could contribute to sympathy the viewers have for Heathcliff. I do agree with this. In the more modern cinema, people like to see more clean, presentable people, and the cleaner and cookie cutter they are, the more the viewers will like them. Whether it be in hell or heaven, Romeo would have followed Juliet anywhere. Despite Romeo s obsession with death, his constant references to Juliet suggests that it is not true. I am content, so thou wilt have it so/Come, death, and welcome! Juliet wills it so (3.5.17 18 and 24). Romeo is content with dying if Juliet wills it so. This brings light to the fact that Romeo does not worry about himself or about anything other than Juliet when he is with her. When he goes to Mantua, Romeo quickly becomes depressed. He complains that, heaven is here, where Juliet lives, and every cat and dog and little mouse, every unworthy thing, live here in heaven and may look on her, but Romeo may not (3.3.29 32). Romeo reveals that anywhere outside Verona is a place of purgatory if the unworthiest of creatures are able to gaze upon Juliet s beauty while he is stuck in Mantua. As a result, he believes that the banishment is worse than dying as he is tortured by the fact that he may never be able to see her again without the risk of being killed. The only way for Romeo to be together with Juliet is through the means of dying. As Romeo heard of Juliet s deceasement, he rushes to go to Verona despite the evident threat to his life, with poison, to kill himself alongside Juliet. He kills himself just before Juliet woke up. Juliet then kills herself so that they may be together in the afterlife regardless of if it is hell or heaven. • 21. Analysis Of The Village Of The Mermaids Delvaux s painting consist of a eight nearly identical woman sitting in chairs outside the doorways of grey rowhomes which head down a thin, long road. Towards the background of the painting, the houses are replaced by a lengthy, white wall and the road starts to bend dramatically. At the bend there is a black hatted man walking away from the viewer and on the other side of the wall there are mermaids. Both the man and the mermaids are miniscule due to the extended perspective of the painting. The Village of The mermaids is confusing for many reasons. It has no central subject and uses size and perspective to minimize key figures and symbols that help the viewer form a holistic conclusion about it s meaning. The Village of the Mermaids is not unlike a hydra, for every question answered two arise in its place. The painting has mysterious, eerie sentiment that plays on the viewer s discomfort with the unknown. The Village of the Mermaids uses subtly unconventional geometry and positioning to achieve contradictory symbolism and ultimately a sense of discombobulation, but Mueller s poetic analysis of the the painting fails to capture the full depth of this state of quiet disarray because people often feel the need to ground surrealist work in reality. The author begins her poem with the question ... ( author, Line number) this figure has a unique symbolic value as he is one of the few things in the painting that isn t replicated. His singularity is one of the only attempts the composition makes to draw attention to him. It s apparent that The artist seeks to minimize the man s presence using compositional tools like placement and depth of field. In the scale of the painting the man only occupies a miniscule amount of space. He is placed in just close enough for the viewer to clearly identify him as a man wearing a black hat and a coat. In a more subtle attempt to reduce the man s visibility, the artist arranges various guiding lines to direct the eye away from the man. Perhaps the most profound example of this can be found in the sky s color gradient, which creates intense depth that directs the viewer towards the horizon line and away from the position of the man. For all of it neglect, the painting does ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

How Subliminal Messaging Affects Consumer Behavior How Subliminal Messaging Affects Consumer Behavior The subject of subliminal messaging in relation to consumer behavior presents an interesting dichotomy between the scientific community and the general public. The purpose of this paper is to discover what, if any, effect subliminal messaging has on consumer behavior, as well as shed light on the differing positions regarding this controversial subject, and provide a brief historical background on the material. Before the topic of subliminal messaging can be addressed, one must first understand subliminal perception. The president of the Psychological Corporation, Dr. Henry Link challenged Vicary to reproduce his findings in another study, but Vicary was not able to do this. (Adams) Since Vicary made his claims about projected messages, his claims have failed to stand up to scientific scrutiny. Research has shown that strong stimuli yields strong response, and the weaker stimuli produce the weakest responses. We use them to answer the following question: which contribution is greater, that from changes in the level of mortality or that from changes in the age distribution of the population? If the contribution of the mortality level is higher than that estimated for the changes in the age structure, then variables that affect the level of cardiovascular mortality, such as socioeconomic, environmental, cultural and behavioral conditions, for example, can represent some of the main risk factors for deaths from cardiovascular disease. In this case, the age structure contributes less to fall than other associated factors. Human reproduction is usually not viewed in this context. Extinction of humans is not considered a threat, but the ability to reproduce is an issue of meeting social expectations. Psychologist Dr. Helen Fisher states that society tends to pressure women into feeling that motherhood is their sole connection to being female (Rutter, 1996). Both sexes seem to be more than adequately equipped by biology for parenthood. However, infertility affects 12% of American couples or approximately 4.5 million couples a year (Fertility, 1998). Infertility is technically defined as the inability to conceive after having regular intercourse for one year without using any form of birth control. Surprisingly, the odds against conception are strong most of the time. A woman has just a 20 35% chance of conceiving during each menstrual cycle, even at the peak of fertility (Infertility, 1996). These odds decline slightly in the women s late 20 s and early 30 s and more sharply after the age 35. Male fertility also decreases with age, although more slowly than female fertility. Fertility is impaired in as many men as women. The problem lies within the man a third of the time, another third of the time within the women, and the remaining third is usually a combination of the two (Youngkin, 1997). Health professionals emphasize the need for infertile couples to recognize the problem as our problem instead of mine or your problem. It is less emotionally damaging this way. For these reasons, both partners should be evaluated when a decision is made to make an attempt at conceiving. Common Causes of Infertility There are many known causes of infertility. • 36. Personification In The Pink Car In recent generations, typical looks or ideas have dominated fashion. People write about this topic through articles, newspapers, and papers. While models style and display the most recent styles, they also represent what women should look like. Not until very recently, people have realized that not all women look like models, unless they starved themselves or worse. In the poems, Fat is Not a Fairy Tale and The Pink Car , the authors convey their main message of the poem as the social aspect of the world and what they believe has the characteristics of the ideal person by using imagery and personification. Admiration for individuality, a common theme throughout The Pink Car , is constantly mentioned through the words of the Mark Halliday. Halliday personifies the cars in the poem as people; specifically focusing in on the pink car. He repeatedly describes the other cars in a jaundiced way; for example, he would characterize these cars as boisterous, rowdy, and big. However, he identifies the pink car as disparate, one who does not worry or care about other cars perspectives. The author wrote, Other cars might honk their horns to seem big // the pink car doesn t honk and doesn t worry (Halliday 25 26). Halliday symbolizes the car as pink because society commonly construes the color as feminist, sweet, playful, the color of love, flowers and romantic. His intention of this poem was to help one find peace within themselves. The author wanted the reader to see that pointing out one s flaws and blemishes cause people to become someone who is arrogant and too self confident by referring to the other cars who did not have the characteristics of the pink car. This poem definitely delineates what one wants to find in themselves, the satisfaction and happiness they eventually discover. The author characterizes the pink car with a certain type of satisfaction and pride which helps people look at themselves in a much more positive and confident way. However, those in favor of the bill continue to proclaim the bill is meant to safe guard those who do not agree with the recent ruling of the Supreme Court of the United States(SCOTUS) on gay marriage.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The congressmen of Mississippi represent their constituents whether it be indirectly or directly. A majority of Mississippians claim to be of the christian faith, which as whole generally does not believe in same sex marriage. When the SCOTUS ruled to legalize same sex marriage many people felt that it was not their issue to rule on but rather the states . This being the case, states that did not currently allow same sex marriage were forced to begin issuing marriage licenses. This change of law begun to affect the constituents as usually there was a consensus against same sex marriage. For people who oppose same sex marriage whether it be religious or moral, we must respect that belief. The idea that as a country we disavow First Amendment rights in favor to be more inclusive is provoking. The bill clearly states what is and what is not discrimination, and the belief that marriage is between one man and one woman should not be considered bigotry if you choose to follow your ... • 44. Tracing Narrative Threads in Life of Pi Essay examples Tracing Narrative Threads 1) Father s admonitions to stay away from the tiger in the zoo. During this part of the novel, Pi s father is teaching him a lesson by letting a tiger brutally kill a goat right in front of him. He is trying to teach Pi to not go near an animal such as tigers because they are incredibly dangerous. I believe this thread represents the foreshadowing of what is to come for Pi. When Pi and Ravi s father was telling them about staying away from tigers he said Tigers are very dangerous. I want you to understand that you are never under any circumstances to touch a tiger, to pet a tiger, to put your hands through the bars of a cage, even to get close to a cage. Is that clear? The name Pi is also symbolic because as Pi stated: I was named after a swimming pool (8) The word Piscine in French translate to swimming pool in English. The significance of his name is because he spends 227 days in a huge swimming pool (the ocean) fighting for his life. The thread develops during the novel because as the novel goes on and he s stuck on the lifeboat, Pi starts to question who Pi really is. When he starts questioning who he is, he finds it hard to learn who he truly wants to be. The message the author is trying to get across is be true to yourself. 3) Young Pi s dedication to three religions As explained in the book, Pi follows three different religions; Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity. Pi is extremely interested in all three religions and tries to find himself through religion. Although, he does not understand why he can t follow all three religions. But he can t be a Hindu, a Christian and a Muslim. It s impossible. He must choose. (76) This thread represents that he dedicates himself to the things he believes in and will fight for what he believes in. Even when his family disagreed with his decision of following all three religions, he still fought for what he believed. This thread develops during the novel because while he is on the lifeboat Pi starts questioning who truly he is and wants to be. The young boy who was once dedicated to vegetarianism, which was rooted in his religion, must make a life changing decision. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. The Aegean Bronze Age Essay The Aegean Bronze age displayed a proliferation of beliefs manifested in social practices, and material culture. Among these practices, the display of idols became substantial in epitomizing social realities. The Minoan civilization, being one of the most momentous urbanization formed during this period, established the use of icons to exemplify their cultural and societal views. Emblems in the form of deities, monstrous creatures, hybrids and composites were prominent, alluding to the ways in which the Minoan populace endured the changing scope of their society. Yet despite these emblems production, the notion of fantastic beings did not necessarily originate from Cretealone. More often than not, cultural practices migrated and constantly moved allowing for adaptations in material culture to materialize. Bearing this in mind, this essay will seek to probe the ways in which fantastic creatures moved and were adapted in Minoan culture, specifically within the ritualistic contexts of the Minoan Civilization. Three issues will be investigated by the essay namely, how fantastic creatures were depicted within the Minoan setting, the roles these icons played within the context of ritualistic practices of the Minoan period, and how the origins of these creatures impacted the new society they belonged in. The spread of material culture in Minoan society fundamentally reflect the ways in which its citizens moved within their time and space. Various representations of otherworldly ... • 46. How Did Galileo Contribute To The Scientific Revolution Galileo was a mathematician, astronomer, physicist, and teacher who played a major role in the scientific revolution during the Renaissance Era. Galileo put the concepts of experiments, theory and mathematics together to advance the scientific world. He is often referred to the Father of Science. Galileo was born February 15, 1564 in Pisa in the Duchy of Florence, Italy. He was the first of six children born of Giulia Ammannati and Vincenzo Galilei, a musician and music theorist. His family moved to Florence in 1574 where he started his education at the Camaldolse Monastery in Vallombrosa. In 1583, Galileo attended the University of Pisa to study medicine; he was exposed to an Aristotelian view of the world. In 1585, he left the University of Pisa before earning his degree. After he left, he still continued to study mathematics while he was away from the university. In 1586, Galileo published his first scientific book, The Little Balance , which described Archimedes method of finding the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Galileo discovered the principle of inertia. He used the balls rolling on an inclined plane experiment, which means that the balls on an inclined plan would roll to the same position as the initial position. Galileo also experimented with free falling objects. Aristotle believed that when two objects are dropped, the heavier object will hit the ground before the lighter object. Galileo proved that theory to be incorrect when he dropped objects from the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and noticed that objects fall to the ground at the same time if air resistance is negligible. This experiment helped him come up with the concept of acceleration. Galileo also proposed the first Theory of Relativity and stated that there is no physical way to differentiate between a body moving at a constant speed and an immobile body. He also attempted to measure the speed of light, but discovered that light moved to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Conventional Three Level Discontinuous Pulse Width... пЂ Generalized Discontinuous PWM for Three Level T NPC Inverters Operating at Low Modulation Index with Variable Power Factor Subhadeep Bhattacharya, Student Member, IEEE, Diego Mascarella, Member, IEEE, Geza Joos, Fellow, IEEE, and Jianhong Xu, Member, IEEE Abstract Conventional three level discontinuous pulse width modulation (DPWM) techniques are typically employed in variable frequency drive applications to reduce inverter switching losses and provide maximum benefit for load power factor angles in the range from 30В° lagging to 30В° leading. This paper proposes a series of DPWM templates for lower power factors and a generalized DPWM strategy for three level T NPC inverters operating with modulation indices lower than 0.5. With a change in the power factor, the proposed strategy adapts the inverter pulse sequence by combining different portions of the proposed DPWM templates within one fundamental cycle and ensures minimum switching instances during transitions. Consequently, the strategy perfectly aligns the no switching durations of the inverter pulse patterns with the respective load current peaks, achieving a 50% switching loss reduction for all operating power factor angles (90В° lagging to 90В° leading) at modulation indices lower than 0.5. The paper provides an analytical evaluation of the proposed strategy on the three level T NPC inverter switching losses. The simulation and experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed three level generalized ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
