Types of Cataract Surgery
Cataract surgery is among the most common procedures performed in older people and is one of
the oldest procedures known. It is done due to the lens becoming cloudy and leads to the vision
being affected. This happens when proteins in the lens clump together causing the cloudy area to
become larger, affecting vision more over time. The most common cause is age related, but it could
also be due to other reasons such as traumatic, diabetic, radiation, secondary and congenital.
The first type of cataract treatment done was known as couching. This technique could only be
performed on lenses that were completely opaque, rigid and heavy to the point where the zonules
were fragile. The eye would then be struck with a blunt object with enough force to cause the
zonules to break causing the lens to dislocate and lie in the vitreous cavity, restoring limited,
completely unfocussed vision. Centuries later, this technique was modified where a sharp
instrument was inserted into the eye to break the zonules.
In 1748, the first surgical cataract removal occurred in Paris. Topical anesthetic was instilled and an
incision was made that went halfway around the cornea and the entire opaque lens was removed. It
was important that the lens was ripened meaning completely hardened so that the lens would not
break into pieces when being removed. Thus this surgery was restricted to only the most advanced
cataracts. Fine sutures weren t available at that time so patients were immobilized with

The Benefits Of The Humane Society
The Humane Society began in America in 1954 with the goal of ending animal cruelty. The
multiple founders were trying to save many animals and get society to end abuse to animals. A
question often appearing what will be done with these animals in the shelter. Research has been
done proving the help of pets in therapyhomes or a support for the mentally ill. Humane Societys
play many roles in the community as it not only holds the animals that have no homes, it offers a
place for community members to give back and volunteer. Giving your time to an organization
like this has proved to be beneficial as people see how good they really have it, and it brings out the
go good, feel good in an everyday person.
Humane Society popularity has been growing rapidly in the past decade, but the nation as a whole
does not know enough. The benefit that the humane society plays in society is large, as they keep
animals off the streets and alive, but also gives community members an opportunity to volunteer.
These animals reported usually are friendly and can help in society as therapy dogs or just an
everyday pet. The benefits of the Humane Society are abundant and the founder had a great cause.
The Humane Society of the United States has been around since 1954 and has made a big impact on
the United States in fighting animal cruelty. The founders of the humane society founded the
program on the foundation of animal protection. Their beliefs from the beginning were to seeking

Frederik Schiller s Letters On The Aesthetic Education Of Man
The role of art in human life has been studied by several philosophers throughout time. Frederik
Schiller (1795 1805), in his Letters On the Aesthetic Education of Man develops the theory of the
drives to explain the fragmentation of the human being and places art in a reconciliatory role
between man s personal nature and the community. The present essay will discuss in some detail
Schiller s theory of the drives, placing the main focus on the role and importance of the play drive
in humanlife, to finally discuss the features in Schiller s theory of play that help elucidate the role
of art in human life.
According to Schiller, men in modern society experiment a conflict between the cultivation of
individual talent and the welfare of their community as a single being. This conflict results in an
alienation of the being and its consequent fragmentation. Taking this into account, Schiller states
there are two aspects of human nature to be considered: the sense drive and the form drive. The
sense, or sensuous drive, is born from man s physical existence, and thrives to achieve constant
change of matter within a limit of time (finite). It is man s most primitive state . On the other hand,
the form drive, born from man s rational nature, thrives to free man and maintain his person despite
all the changes of his condition overlooking a limited time frame (infinite).
This duality of human nature brings forth an imbalance in man s nature when one of the senses
overpowers the

Statement of Purpose for an Education at Full Sail...
Some may find that collage is the most suited of paths to take, many problems may exist, many
questions in need of answering. With Fordham University and Full Sail University is a way to
reach opportunities that may motivate, excel, and improve the future as a student, and as a
working member of society. Fordham University can be a very impressive offer with its many
majors, goals, and challenges that can be explored and viewed. Restrictions of certain G.P.A
levels can be present and reviewed by the administration of both the schools, as well as the A.C.T.
and S.A.T scores. There are in schools of Fordham and Full Sail University ways to break the
walls of regulation by attending various scholarships the colleges offer, even the role that may have
been placed in the community oriented groups like F.C.C.L.A or even ILC can be very
beneficial. The location of both Fordham University and Full Sail University reside in heavy
populated urban cities which may pose a problem with for example prices as well as the
likelihood of being accepted may diminish. Each pro and con of the college s of Fordham and Full

The Effects Of Capitalism On The Relationships People
Durkheim perhaps provides the most analysis specifically on the effects of capitalism on the
relationships people have. In general, he argues that the Expansion of the division of labour led to a
change in social solidarity and thus the relations people had with each other. In terms of the change
in social solidarity he argues that pre capitalism society was less individualistic, as can been in his
statement that It was because men were grouped, and thought of themselves in the forms of groups,
that in their ideas they grouped other things, and in the beginning the two modes of grouping were
merged to the point of being indistinct (Durkheim, E Emirbayer, M.2003.pg.93). Durkheim refers
to this kind of social solidarity as Mechanical solidarity which means society is thus divided into
quite small components which completely envelop the individual (Durkheim,E.1902.as quoted in.
Lukes,S.1992.pg.149) therefore creating no room for individual interests and actions in societies
characterized by this form of solidarity. Durkheim further argues that this is done through the
conscience collective which is extensive and strong and harmonizes men s movements in detail
(Durkheim.1902 as quoted in.Lukes,S.1992.pg.151/152). Most importantly, Durkheim explicitly
states that Segmented social structures were further characterized by a low degree of
interdependence (Durkheim 1902 as quoted in Lukes,S.1992.pg.150). However, this form of
solidarity is not what characterizes

Leading Change Is Never Easy
Leading change is never easy. Many individuals want to reach their goals fast, but the process of
change takes time. It needs patience, persistence and learning from mistakes (MarhГЎnkovГЎ,
2010). The centre for the aging needs a change in the activities that take place. Currently, the events
that are scheduled in the center are not serving the purpose they should. The members feel that they
do not personally associate with the events like bingo, trivia, and reading the newspaper. The
individuals needto have a sense of belonging, and the right activities will helpthem with their
socialization. As the director of activities, I have developed a vision statement for the change that I
want to implement in the center. The vision statement is;... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There needs to be a variety of activities and not just the three that are currently being offered. The
range gives the members an array of activities to choose from, and they can go for one they love
and not just engage in an activity because it is the only one available. The staff members will have
an easier job because the patron will be occupied and happy with the new events, which means that
the staff is not so engrossed in what is happening with the patrons.
The theories of aging especially disengagement, modernization, and activity theories emphasize
on the importance of the social aspect in those who are aging (Charles, Carstensen, 2010). The
members have had to change their lives and have lost some roles they used to undertake
especially now that they are at the center. Provision of other social activities means that the
individuals can get a replacement for the roles they have lost by being away from their homes and
families (Jin, 2010). These activities will help establish a positive sense of self because they feel
useful, and it usually matters to them that they can still engage in such activities. The change will
ensure that the seniors are able to develop a positive self concept because they will feel useful. The
change will also help them develop a sense of belonging because they will be engaging in an
activity of their choice, which means it is something they love doing. They will also socialize with

Why I Want To Be A Bartender Essay
Life as a bartender, all started when I was stationed in Germany in 1997. I went to the NCO club
at lunch time, after work, and on weekends to play the slots machines, until the club section for
dancing opened. Nonetheless, being at the club constantly made people asked me if I worked
there. It made sense to me to work, have fun, and get paid. I love to be surrounded by all different
types of people. Positions were needed to be filled, so I applied for the bartender position.
Everyone knew me by name.
Since I was in the military, permission from my Commander and supervisor was need. My
supervisor SFC Weathersby vouched for me to Captain Sorenton assuring that my bartender duties
would not interfere with my military duties as a Soldier. SFC Weathersby verified that if it
interfered with my military whatsoever, that I would relinquish my job at the NCO club

Who Is To Blame For Romeo And Juliet s Death
Romeo and Juliet Romeo and Juliet is a play written by William Shakespeare in the 14th century.
It is a beautiful tragedy about two star crossed lovers and their journey together despite their
feuding families protests. As a result of said feud, both Romeo and Juliet ended their lives, as a
result of thinking that the other was dead. If we take this kind of situation and put it into the
modern world, someone would be blamed for these tragic deaths. The only question is who.
Their parents are to blame the Montagues and the Capulets. Of course, to craft your opinion on
this topic, you must first understand the fictional background of the Montagues and the Capulets.
Although the play doesn t offer a backstory, readers can easily see how much tension there is
between the two families. They acknowledge it too, but most of the evidence for my conclusion
comes from characters other than the Capulet and Montague head of households. Verona, where
this play takes place, has a prince that notices all the conflict going on between the families. He
says, right after a fight scene from which Tybalt (a Capulet) and Mercutio (a Montague) emerge
dead, Romeo slew him; he slew Mercutio. Who now the price of his dear blood doth owe?
(3.1.175 176.) The prince is pretty much fed up with the fighting between the Montagues and the
Capulets. After this scene, readers of Romeo and Juliet can safely infer that the death of a
Montague and the death of a Capulet will not be the last. There did not

Male Underachievment Ia
Introduction. Male Underachievement continues to be a major part of academics, not only in the
Caribbean but worldwide. It has been heavily encouraged through negative stereotypes as well as
media. For example in some television series, the protagonist is shown as being too cool for school
and in some cases has failing grades. The problem of maleunderachievement is becoming more
prevalent within our society today, and can be seen as result due to a vichyssoise of problems
such as peer pressure, negative portrayal by the media and lack of proper upbringing in homes.
This problem continues to be detrimental to our society, not only in terms of the short term but also
in the long run. The best solution for the lack of performance in... Show more content on

Therefore we can see that in Trinidad the marginalization of the father figure role is leading to not
only an increase in male underachievement but also eventually an increase in other social problems
such as crime.
Singh S. (2007) sees underachievement as occurring even at higher levels of education. For instance
she has noted that females have yet again outshone males with 65 percent of the first degrees and
63 percent of higher degrees being secured by females. This presents a worrying situation as it
means that there would be less men who are educated and employable within the country, what this
could lead to is an eventual labour vacuum, due to the inability to fill positions. This she argues is
based mainly on cultural factors, which must be addressed. If this is not done, the performance of
males may continue to spiral downwards leading to disastrous results.

The Drug Of Red Blood Cells
Erythropoietin is a hormone that is produced by the kidneys in response to a decrease in the
oxygen carrying capacity of red blood cells in circulation (2). From the kidneys, erythropoietin
(EPO) enters the blood stream and enters the bone marrow where it stimulates an increase in the
production of red bloodcells (1, 2). This mechanism functions as a negative feedback loop since
the signaling of an increase in the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood due to an increased
number of red blood cells inhibits further production of EPO. The release of EPO is very sensitive
to the level of oxygen carrying capacity in the blood. The simple occurrence of red blood cells
death will trigger its release to ensure normal levels are maintained (1).... Show more content on

An important aspect to producing synthesized EPO is the use of mammalian cells. EPO contains
40% carbohydrates which are important to the stability and biosynthesis of recombinant EPO (5).
In 1984, EPO was able to be cloned and synthesized for use by using recombinant DNA
technology (1, 3, 4, 5). The biological properties of synthesized EPO are very similar to the original
hormone found naturally in the body (3). The importance of the mammalian cell carbohydrate
composition allowed for the carbohydrate portions of recombinant EPO to be almost identical to
the carbohydrate portions of native EPO (3). Success in creating synthetic EPO on a large scale that
mimics native EPO in humans allowed for the implementation of synthesized EPO for medicinal
purposes. Synthesized erythropoietin became the first hematopoietic growth factor to be used in
clinical settings (1). The discovery of synthesized EPO has provided patients with renal failure
and severe anemia the ability to reverse the effects of these disorders and improve the oxygen
carrying capacity of their circulatory system (1, 5). Individuals with kidney damage or renal
failure are in need of EPO the most. Since adults make EPO in their kidneys, any damage to the
renal system will alter the ability to produce enough EPO to sufficiently restore red blood cell levels
(1, 5).

Persuasive Essay About Running
Running is a physically demanding sport. If you are looking for a way to get in shape, then you
should consider running. Running uses every muscle in your body because you are engaging every
aspect of yourself in the activity. Also, running is a great way to incorporate more cardio into your
workout. Runningis not just about getting in shape and staying shape; but running involves many
fun activities and sports.
Some sports that involve running are track and cross country. If you are a competitive individual,
then you should consider track or cross country. If you are a more laid back individual, then you
can take into consideration mud runs or glow/color runs. Those events are always fun, and you get
dirty while participating in the event. Running is a good way to get in shape and have fun doing
so, but before you begin running, you need to know the basics of how to begin.
The first step to begin running is to start with runs/walks. You will start by adding one minute of
running for every four minutes of walking. Gradually increase your running time, so that eventually
you will be running for twice the amount of time that you spend walking. Also, interval running is a
good beginners workout. You start by jogging for one minute, then walking for one minute, then
you should increase the time by one minute each time until you are running for five minutes and
walking for five minutes. The technique you choose should be most comfortable to you.
However, you need to be

Caryl Phillips The Nature of Blood Essay
Caryl Phillips The Nature of Blood
On its most immediate level, Caryl Phillips The Nature of Blood narrates several stories of the
Jewish Diaspora, using the familiar Shakespearean character Othello to provide a counterpoint to
the others experiences of displacement. The Nature of Blood thus initially seems to fit awkwardly
among texts by other West Indian authors who use the Caribbeanas the setting of their work or
incorporate West Indian characters into their work. Through his multi stranded narrative, however,
Phillips creates a geographical setting that mirrors the multi regional influence of the Caribbean.
The triangular space of Europe, the Middle East, and Africa shaped by the character s stories
parallels the historical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This triangular situation of spaces in turn allows Phillips, while not specifically addressing the
region, to explore the condition of the Caribbean diaspora.
The first narrative of The Nature of Blood unsettles the existence of geographical home by
questioning optimistic views of settlement. Stephan opens the novel, explaining plans for the
creation of the new state of Israel to Moshe, a Romanian Holocaust survivor. Their dialogue
reveals Moshe s unease with the claim to Israel as a new Jewish state, even as Stephan expresses
optimism: Tell me, what will be the name of the country? Our country, I said. The country will
belong to you too (Phillips 3). While Stephan insists upon claiming Israel both for himself and
Moshe, Moshe resists this possessiveness, hence his inquiry about the country rather than his
country. Even after Stephan asserts that Moshe has as much stake in Israel as the other settlers,
Moshe hesitates, failing even to remember the name of the new country. At the same time that
Stephan and Moshe s dialogue questions resettlement, the prose of the novel s opening establishes
Moshe as part of a diasporic population. The narrator describes Moshe as one of the

Analysis Of A Pair Of Tickets By Amy Tan
A Pair of Tickets by Amy Tan uses unpretentious yet intense symbolism and imagery to make a
wonderful story with layers of importance and significant profundity that one can t completely
acknowledge unless you read it more than once.
The story is around an American conceived Chinese lady, Jing mei, who goes to Chinato meet her
twin stepsisters that her mom was compelled to relinquish numerous prior years. Since her mom
had passed away just a couple of months prior, the meeting is full of vulnerability and bitterness.
Jing mei battles with self character issues and what it truly intends to be Chinese. En route, she
takes in reality about the reasons her mom deserted her sisters and the significance behind their
names. At last, she at last associates with her sisters and makes the passionate association with her
Chinese legacy.
With regards to symbolism and imagery, Amy Tan seasons her story with words like dark, dull,
and desolate which passes on to the peruser a feeling of how Jing mei felt about her life after her
mom s demise. Dim and boring suggest an absence of warmth and a fundamental pity that appear to
pervade the story. Jing mei has clashing sentiments about her late mother, her Chinese self, and her
relatives, hence adding to the general grayness of the story.
Adding to that fundamental bitterness is Jing mei s own feeling of uncertainty which can be set up
when she sees the general population on the bamboo platform. The laborers standing unharnessed on

Framing Effects the Sales Promotion by Referring to the...
The concept of framing which is a part of prospect theory (Kahneman and Tversky 1979) is
closely related to the formation of reference price in the consumer s mind. Outcomes above the
consumer s reference point are presented as gains and it affects choice, judgment, and risk taking
differently than the same alternatives which are below the reference point and are coded as losses
by the consumer. In extant literature, there have been efforts to explain the framing effects of sales
promotionby referring to mental accounting theory. Thaler and Johnson (1986) have proposed that
consumers use hedonic rules to edit their mental accounts, therefore when they see a small gain
(e.g., pricediscount) relative to a big loss (e.g., purchasing cost), they prefer to separate them
psychologically into two different accounts rather than integrate them. This is the silver lining
principle (based on prospect theory) and it also says that utility functions are concave for gains
and convex for losses, and the curve for losses is steeper than that for gains. Because the size of a
promotionis usually small relative to the purchasing cost, consumers should create a new account
for the promotion rather than integrate it into the purchasing cost, regardless of the promotional
types.
This proposed study aims to use mental accounting theory and sales framing concepts to upgrading
promotions and compare the attractiveness of non monetary promotions versus price discount
promotions in a

The Stereotypes Of Disney PrincessesBamboozling Young Girls
Disney Princesses Bamboozling Young Girls Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, and
Ariel are all names almost every young female can recall. These are just a few of Disney s most
memorable characters, the Disney princesses which are idolized by young girls everywhere.
These princesses are portrayed to be strong willed, optimistic, and hardworking women who
overcome various hardships throughout their life. Talk about being the perfect role models for
little girls everywhere but are they really? Although they may seem to have admirable qualities,
by the end of these Disney movies, each princess receives their happy ending with their prince
charming at their side. This concludes that happiness is obtained only by finding your prince
charming . A princess happily ever after , that is repeated in these iconic Disney movies, distorts
what true happiness is and could be for girls around the world. This perceived reality promoted
by Disney then becomes engraved in our young girls minds through ways that are much like
propaganda in the political arena. Propaganda is a form of language commonly used to
manipulate intended audiences. In Disney s case, their intended audience consists of young
girls around the world. These Disney films display methods of propaganda, such as doublespeak
(Lutz) and the two extremes fallacy (Cross), which result in our young girls believing in a false
reality. There needs to be attention brought about this flawed perception of a sole happiness that
is continuously depicted by Disney and shared through ways of propaganda, as it is damaging
the minds of our young girls the future contributors of our society. Propaganda can be displayed
in many ways as it, ...is simply a means of persuasion... (Cross 247). You can persuade someone
by giving them few options, sugar coating the truth, lying, or even by misleading them.
Doublespeak is an art of language that is used to manipulate, therefore making it a notable
example of a way propaganda may be portrayed. William Lutz describes doublespeak in his
article, The World of Doublespeak , as the product of clear thinking and is carefully designed and
constructed to appear to communicate but in fact to mislead. This art of persuasion

The Universal Law Of Nature
The Formula of the Universal Law (of Nature) is the first formulation of the categorical
imperative in Kant s Grounding for the Metaphysics of Morals, in which he proposes to act as if
the maxim of your action were to become through your will a universal law of nature. (Kant,
421) For example, telling the truth is considered a universal law. However, many skeptics argue
that it is illogical because of human behavior, we as a society are put into dire situations in
which lying is necessary to protect life. I will argue that the categorical imperative is an ideal for
humanity that has been deeply misunderstood and is valid in relation to the Kingdom of Ends
formula. During the Nazi era, many were subjected to their religious beliefs and citizens were
being asked whether or not he or she were a Jew. In a hypothetical response, due to the nature of
the question, if you were to say yes, you would then be executed under the law of a harsh
dictator. It is obvious to say that, the duty to preserve your own life would be threatened in
regards to the murderer asking the question. We can infer that although lying is morally wrong in
regards to the categorical imperative, it is not wrong to the murderer who is not conforming to the
moral requirements. Therefore, we shall look into the necessary moral requirements for categorical
imperative to be a reasonable obligation for us to follow. In addition to the universal law of nature,
there are two other principles: the formula of

DescartesMeditations, To What Extent Are We Able To...
With reference to Descartes Meditations , to what extent are we able to distinguish between reality
and illusion?
Meditations outlines Descartes method of justifying, through reasoning alone, his initial beliefs
concerning the existence of reality as he perceives it. This challenge of scepticism is itself
achieved through adopting a temporary sceptical approach in meditations 1 and 2. By way of
mental deconstruction and evaluation of all that he had previously considered true, Descartes is left
with only the elements that he is able to ascertain are certain and indubitable . He first asserts our
apparent inability to distrust our senses in distinguishing reality from illusion. This process forms
the foundations from which he may ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the first meditation, through providing three arguments (waves) as to the nature of our inability
to distinguish reality from illusion, Descartes makes a convincing argument as to why we would,
prior to his reasoned proof of existence of God, disregard all a posteriroi knowledge as a viable
source of information abou the world. In the first wave Descartes questions the legitammacy of the
information provided by the senses. He provides the example of the way in which our sense of
perspective funtions, stating senses occasionally decieve us about things that are veru small or
very far away , to call into question that which we so often rely on to provide us with an accurate
account of reality . Descartes method demands that if reason is to doubt a foundation then all
knowledge based on that foundation should be rejected; of the senses he articulates having
occcasionlly found that they decieved [him] following with the statement that it is prudent never to
trust those who have decieved us . In this way Descartes is seeking to undermine empiricism, his
abandoning of he sense principle is utilied to porve that senses are our main soucrce of error.
A possible contradiction of this could perhaps be Descartes

The Role of Themistocles in the Greek Defeat of the Persians in 480 479 BC.
At the beginning of the 5th century BC, the Persian Empire extended from modern day India to
western Turkey and as far south as Egypt. The Persian ruler, Xerxes, fuelled by his father Darius
past defeats, vowed to extend the empire further west into the lands of Greece though was
unsuccessful. His failure is largely attributed to the foresight and strategies of a respectable, wealthy
Athenian citizen, Themistocles. Themistocles strengthening of the Athenian navy and unification
of Greek states in the Panhellenic League along with his strategies in the battles of Thermopylae,

Themistocles played on the enmity and the jealousy the people [Athenians] felt towards the
Aeginetians with no need to terrify the Athenians with the threat of Darius and the Persians
according to Plutarch, to convince Athenian citizens how a large Athenian navy was vital if Greece
wished to control sea areas.
Herodotus comments the outbreak of this war [with Aegina] at that moment saved Greece by
forcing Athens to become a maritime power . This indicates that due to the far sighted vision of
Themistocles who saw that the future of Athens lay in its naval force in contrast to the traditional
view that the Athenian land army, was the in the best interest of the defense of Athens. The
significance of Themistocles plan to build this naval force was, according to Bradley, is that the
navy was ultimately not used against Aegina but in the battle of Salamis where the Persians were
defeated in September 23, 480 BC.
Themistocles revolutionary policies were frowned upon and rejected by the conservative Arepagus
with Bradley believing it was only through careful propaganda that Themistocles convinced people
to ostracize his political opponent Aristides in 483BC who felt the wealth from the silver mines
should be evenly distributed amongst Athenian citizens. 542 of the 1500 ostraka excavated bear the

Two Reasons Why Mother Teresa Is A Hero
Attention Grabbing Device
Imagine people everywhere, lining alleyways. Homeless families begging for food and diseases
running rampant on the streets. These are the slums of Calcutta, India. Life in this city is miserable,
desperation pervades this hopeless environment. But within there s still some optimism to be found.
Strangely enough, it comes in the form of a woman, barely five feet tall, and armed with nothing
but kindness.
Thesis
Mother Teresa is a hero because she is selfless, courageous, and has strong leadership abilities.

Mother Teresa was born in Skopje, Macedonia in 1910. At the age of 18 she joined a group of nuns
in Ireland. After months of training with the Sisters of Loreto, she traveled to India. She took her

Mother Teresa gave up everything just to help those less fortunate. For example, in 1979 she won
a Nobel Peace Prize with $192,000 worth of prize money and instead of keeping she used it to
create multiple homes for victims of leprosy. She was commemorated with the highest honor, yet
she was still thinking of others.
The second reason Mother Teresa is a hero is because she is courageous. For instance, many
people could have shunned her for helping the unwanted, but she found the courage and strength in
her heart to help those in need. Also, she helped a particular group that had leprosy, which is a
very contagious disease. She set up many clinics in order to help these people even though she put
herself at risk of catching the disease.
The final reason Mother Teresa is a hero is because she was a strong leader. This trait can be
exemplified because she had a relentless focus on her mission helping the poor. She effectively
implemented her plan and cared for the people of Calcutta. Mother Teresa was a situational
leader, for example she helped people according to their situation, if they were starving she would
give them food, if they were homeless she would provide a home for them to say at, or if they
were sick she helped them to heal. If a situation came, she would find a solution to help them in

Nathan Price s Religious Beliefs
The Price family is a big symbol for ignorance and arrogance of religious beliefs in Africa.
Nathan Price is blinded to the beliefs of Africa by his own beliefs and consistently tries to force
his own beliefs on the people of Africa without accepting their own. He insists on baptizing the
children despite the dangers of the river, tries to give sermons in Kikongo instead of letting Anatole,
the translator, do it and frequently messes up words, ignores the beliefs of the African people, and
subsequently ignores and mistreats his family to accomplish his mission. Likewise, the Europeans
ignore African customs, and mistreat the African citizens on a daily basis. Their ignorance and
arrogance blinded them to the true nature of Africa. Africa... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Nathan and Anatole got into a fight about the differing religious beliefs between the Price family
and the chief of the village, and Nathan decided to give his sermons in Kikongo himself.
However, Nathan didn t fluently speak Kikongo. He frequently pronounced words wrong giving
them different meanings. His most common mispronunciation is Tata Jesus is baМ€ngala!

he pronounces it, it means the poisonwood tree (Kingsolver 276). He thinks that he can do

more modern things like malaria pills. Like Nathan, the Europeans see themselves as superior.
They see the people of Africa as slaves to do their work for them with little to no pay. If they don t

During the prohibition era of the 1920 s, if one wasn t an enemy of Alphonse (Al) Scarface
Capone, was he, in many eyes, a hero? Due to his savvy street smarts and the corrupt rebellion of
the decade, Al Capone was not only a popular commentary of the time, but is now a legend. His
classic boy from the ghetto turned generous multi millionaire story only adds to the heroism seen in
this most famous Chicagomobster. Chicago s industries, open spaces and four seasons were an
enormous magnet for the 19th century Europeans looking for a home and opportunity. The frontier

These statistics are probably sensationalized, however, no man has ever brought forth the proof
that Capone touched a trigger in any of them. The most that can be said is that Capone s
enemies (mainly other mob leaders trying to cash in a little too much, in Capone s territory, on
the prohibition law) died, that Capone s friends lived longer than the friends of other gangsters;
Capones power, influence, income, and the scope of his operations grew with the hammer blows
of death. It was not illegal in the 1920s to own a machine gun, so the Chicago piano quickly
became one of the key tools that gangs used to maintain their influence. The situation quickly got
out of control, and deteriorating became an open warfare. Hundreds of soldiers were killed on
Chicago s streets, in cars and at home, and the concept of being taken for a ride took on a new
meaning. Al Capone is said to have had more to do with this than any other, only because he was
the main mobster around and had so much control over all the illegal practiced doings of the
city. As there were many wars between the peasants and the king, there were many wars between
Chicago mobs over who had control and who didn t. Robin Hood was the peasants leader, as
Capone was the Chicago residents, but Chicago s king was not hated, in fact, he was adored and
respected by many! Capone was often seen with many highly regarded political

Everything ranging from education, religion to the media usually affects the individual s point of

through open mindedness and awareness. At a first glance, the Ancient philosophies appear
irrelevant to the contemporary times, but by media analysis and personal revelation, it is the
modern thought backbone. Fundamentally, Human perception shall be at most times limited. To
experience nature entirely one must take into consideration all the idols that hide them that
govern the incapability of a person of possessing infinite knowledge appears unrealistic.

One cannot undertake any study of the 1960s in America without hearing about the struggles for
social change. From civil rights to freedom of speech, civil disobedience and nonviolent protest
became a central part of the sixties culture, albeit representative of only a small portion of the
population. As Mario Savio, a Free Speech Movement (FSM) leader, wrote in an essay in 1964:
The most exciting things going on in America today are movements to change America ( Takin it to

The rebellion against automation and middle class prosperity of the sixties is portrayed in Kerouac
s The Dharma Bums. Ray and the other dharma bums lived on little money and enjoyed nature.
Ray traveled cross country hitchhiking and jumping on trains from California to North Carolina
and back more than once on only a few dollars and while at home in North Carolina for
Christmas he sat in the woods with his dog much of the time and preferred to sleep in a sleeping
bag outside on the porch rather than inside his mother s home. This love of nature and desire to
live a very meager lifestyle in opposition to the working class prosperity seems to be more in
opposition to the changing culture, which was becoming more automated and industry driven, than
it was trying to illicit change. Regarding automation and middle class prosperity, it seems that
Kerouac and others feared the loss of nature to industry as well as one s time to be able to enjoy
nature.
The fight against automation was however, somewhat subservient to the goal of social change
regarding individual rights. The civil rights movement sought changes to the system of racial
injustice. Resistance to this movement helped bring about the FSM and the fight for one s rights to
free speech and assembly. The FSM was a movement dedicated to promoting equality and individual
rights, yet it maintained the

Geochemical Tracers Essay
4.2 Geochemical tracers
Due to recent advances in both quick analytical techniques for large numbers of samples and
numerical source apportioning models that allow a more detailed and quantitative understanding of
the uncertainty associated with estimated results, the geochemical tracers are extensively used in
recent sediment fingerprinting studies (Franz et al. 2013; Grimes et al. 2007). Such as rare earth
elements (REE; e.g., La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Lu), major
elements (e.g., Fe, K, Na, Al, Ca and Mg) and trace elements (e.g., As, Ba, Co, Cr, Cs, Hf, Sc, Ta,
Ti, Th and Zr), in both source soil and sediment samples, have been used in sediment fingerprinting

Natural geogenic REE signatures sometimes may be a potential proxy for identifying lacustrine
sediment sources and soil erosion rates (Wen et al. 2014). Though REEs has many advantages,
owning its relatively high cost, REEs have not been extensively used.
There are three approaches that can account for potential differences in sediment geochemistry
relating to particle size and mineralogy. One commonly used way of normalization is to use
measured bulk concentrations in the total sediment sample to account for differences in sediment
geochemistry. The diluting effects of non reactive constitutes (e.g., coarse sediment, quartz and
feldspar grains) can be removed. The second way of normalization is to divide the concentration of
the potential tracer by the concentration of the conservative element (e.g., Al, Ti and Li). The third
method is to incorporate a correction factor into the mixing model (Collins et al. 1998). Moreover,
the geochemical tracer method can also be applied to contemporary and historic sedimentary
deposits for reconstructing temporal changes in sediment provenance at the catchment scale
(Thevenon et al. 2013).
4.3 Radionuclides
Atmospheric fallout radionuclides(FRN), such as 7Be, 10Be, 137Cs, 210Pb, 239Pu and 240Pu,

sentimentality, untamed nature, diversity, and the supernatural. The arts, in general, are the most
obvious product of this time. Untamed nature had been an interest for quite some time, carrying
over from the transcendental movement, notably from authors such as Henry David Thoreau. The
interest in the supernatural was inseparable from Romanticism, appearing in every art form.
Novels such as Bram Stoker s Dracula demonstrated the curiosity in the occult. Notable musical
that also concern this topic include Hector Berlioz s opera Faust, the Witches Sabbath from
Symphonie Fantastique (which also includes a demonic version of the Dies irae chant), Franz Liszt
s Mephisto Waltz, and Modest Mussorgsky s Night on Bald Mountain. Much of the Romantic
Movement in music also involves the portrayal of human emotions, such as Hector Berlioz s
affections for Irish actress Harriet Smithson through his Symphonie Fantastique. The social
constructs also began to evolve during this period. Carrying over from the late Classical period
was a large middle class. Coupled with improvements in printing

Comparing Willowdean s Connection To IllГ©a
Connection As this book has several references, the most important connection I found in the
book was, when Willowdean had to deal with her Aunt s death. Willowdean s Aunt, Lucy, had
passed away by the cause of a heart attack. She was about 300 pounds at the age of thirty.
Willowdean loved her Aunt dearly, and it was difficult for her to push through that phase. This
specific part of the book relates to another book I ve read, called The One, by Kiera Cass. This
book is about a country name IllГ©a, with thirty five different provinces, and eight casts. A
Selection between thirty five different girls, from all the differents states of IllГ©a was held to
determine to new Queen. America Singer, a fortunate girl from the fifth cast, was chosen

students succeed or fail in these online courses. To obtain answers to the concerns previously listed,
an 8 week study of students in an online class was conducted. This study consisted of monitoring
online communication and classroom activity among students with different backgrounds with
geographical location and age being two of the main contributing factors. From this study, results

Analysis Of The Play Macbeth
Abigail Castillo
WHUM
December 2014
Final exam
Macbeth
There are many conflicts found in the play Macbeth by Shakespeare both external and internal.
There is man vs. society, man vs. self, man vs. man, and even man vs. supernatural. In my opinion, I
believe that the central conflict in Macbeth s plot is man vs. self, an internal conflict. This internal
conflict begins when Macbeth overhears the three witch sisters, also known as the Weird Sisters,
making a prediction that one day he will be become King and rule. From this point on in the
play, he (Macbeth) is conflicted about murdering Duncan, King of Scotland, in order to gain
power. Macbeth starts of the play as a good, honest warrior and the well trusted captain of King
Duncan. Macbeth begins to experience the conflict of man vs self because of his wise to become
king (as well as his trust in the witches prediction) which directly goes against his loyalty to King
Duncan. Even though he goes through internal conflicts with himself over committing this crime
many times his ambition wins, and he becomes a killer. His conscience seems to overcome
everything else by the end, and this is also true for other characters in the play. This ambition
combined with guilt creates a man vs self conflict all throughout the play. Ambition has severe
consequences as seen when Macbeth is slain and branded a tyrant. Shakespeare does not give his
character the chance to enjoy what he has done as a way possibly to imply that it is more

Worst Actions Of Professionalism Analysis
Stealing from a organization you work for is one of the worst actions of professionalism. In my
opinion there are many forms of negativity to determine the quality of an individual and their
professionalism, but the act of theft has to be one of the worst. In my perspective this is morally
and ethically wrong. This was the first time I encountered a negative example of professionalism
was when I was employed as a grocery Bagger at a commissary located on a U.S. Department of
Defense base while I was in high school. Being a bagger for the U.S. DeCA Commissary in
meant for individuals to follow a set of guidelines that were required The duties required for
being a bagger consisted of bagging goods for customers who requested helped. While working
alongside fellow students from school and Korean locals who obtained work visas for the U.S.

opportunities with customers. The objective of the job was to take store goods that were bought by

Eyewitness Identification Evidence Essay
Witness identification evidence is the second most incriminating type of evidence bar a
confession (Brandon Davies, 1973 as cited by Valentine Heaton, 1999). However, The Innocence
Project reports it is also the leading cause of wrongful convictions in the US, more specifically,
72% of DNA exoneration cases since 1989.
The aim of line ups is to give the witness a fair test of recognition. Additionally, the suspect (who
may be innocent) must also be given a fair chance. In the 1976 the Devlin Report was created
following an investigation into a signification number of wrongful convictions. The aim of the
report was to minimise convictions based on solely eye witness testimony. However, this rule is
not specified in law indicating that false identifications are still a likely possibility. The Police and
Criminal Evidence Act (1984) (UK code of practice) aims to increase the likelihood of accurate
identifications by providing guidelines to law enforcements. Although PACE provides guidelines
for how to conduct line ups, the incidence of false identifications is still common.
It is of great importance to ensure that eyewitness identification of suspect s can be as accurate and
reliable as possible, especially considering the frequency and importance of its use. Factors that
affect the accuracy of eyewitness identification must be addressed and ameliorated to avoid future
miscarriages of justice (i.e. prosecuting the wrong person). Whilst law enforcements may not have

Should Clowns Be Allowed To Wear On Halloween
Clowns costumes shouldn t be allowed to wear on Halloween, especially with all the rumors and
scare tactics that are going on today about them. Clowns are supposed to be someone who
participates in the circus and wears funny makeup and try to make people laugh. The more you
look at their creepy grinning faces, the more it twists into something more evil. In recent years,
films such as Stephen King s It have highlighted those fears, and the killer clowncraze currently
sweeping the UK hasn t helped. (Goldhill, 1) Before the movie It came out people weren t as
spooked out about clowns as they are now. Clowns can come off as happy as they want, yet
regardless it attempts to hide their true feelings.
Kids are scared of clowns because they are creepy, and portray a confusing image. On Halloween
a lot of kids will be out trying to have fun and collect candy, if clown are out there scaring kids
and setting a bad image that will most likely run the kids off. You have to worry about their
parents getting involved to make sure they re kids are not in danger. Clowns can display being

Odyssey
After the ancient Greeks adopted the Phoenician alphabet around 800 BCE, they began to write
down the stories from and about their past, known as their archaiologia (Sayre, 115). For
generations these stories were pasted down by word of mouth, the two most important being the
Iliad and the Odyssey, created by an author history knows as Homer.
Widely considered the first and greatest epic poet by the ancient Greeks, Homer is credited as the
author of the epic poems the Iliad and the Odyssey. He is believed to be a bard, a singer of songs
about the deeds of heroes and the ways of the gods. His stories were part of a long standing oral
tradition that dated back to the time of the Trojan War, which is believed to have taken place around
1200 BCE (Sayre, 115).
Homer s poems have also been a source of controversy among scholars. Until the discovery of
Troy by archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann, his poems were believed to be fiction. Further
evidence was found in a Mycenaean vase known as the Warrior Vase, which bared... Show more

of the Odyssey include fate and free will, pride, justice and pity. The Iliad and the Odyssey laid
out the individual values and responsibilities that all Greeks believed to be their personal
obligations if they were to ever fully realize their goals (Sayre, 119). While the true nature of these
epic poems may remain in question, there important will forever remain a staple in the ancient

What Is The Tone In The Odyssey
Homer s The Odyssey, arguably the best and most well known epic poem there is, is full of
literary elements that bring the story it s fame. With its events being told by Odysseus after he
already experienced them, Homer has the opportunity to write with a level of dramatics that isn t
often seen in other literary works. He uses this to his advantage, developing tone and theme and
other literary elements in the best possible way. Homer uses diction in The Odysseyto create a tone
of anticipation. In The Land of the Dead, Homer s use of the word somber creates an anticipating
tone. In line 630, Homer writes ...he bent down to the somber blood, depicting the moment when
the prophet, Tiresias, drinks the offering Odysseusset out to be able

  • 2. Types of Cataract Surgery Cataract surgery is among the most common procedures performed in older people and is one of the oldest procedures known. It is done due to the lens becoming cloudy and leads to the vision being affected. This happens when proteins in the lens clump together causing the cloudy area to become larger, affecting vision more over time. The most common cause is age related, but it could also be due to other reasons such as traumatic, diabetic, radiation, secondary and congenital. The first type of cataract treatment done was known as couching. This technique could only be performed on lenses that were completely opaque, rigid and heavy to the point where the zonules were fragile. The eye would then be struck with a blunt object with enough force to cause the zonules to break causing the lens to dislocate and lie in the vitreous cavity, restoring limited, completely unfocussed vision. Centuries later, this technique was modified where a sharp instrument was inserted into the eye to break the zonules. In 1748, the first surgical cataract removal occurred in Paris. Topical anesthetic was instilled and an incision was made that went halfway around the cornea and the entire opaque lens was removed. It was important that the lens was ripened meaning completely hardened so that the lens would not break into pieces when being removed. Thus this surgery was restricted to only the most advanced cataracts. Fine sutures weren t available at that time so patients were immobilized with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Frederik Schiller s Letters On The Aesthetic Education Of Man The role of art in human life has been studied by several philosophers throughout time. Frederik Schiller (1795 1805), in his Letters On the Aesthetic Education of Man develops the theory of the drives to explain the fragmentation of the human being and places art in a reconciliatory role between man s personal nature and the community. The present essay will discuss in some detail Schiller s theory of the drives, placing the main focus on the role and importance of the play drive in humanlife, to finally discuss the features in Schiller s theory of play that help elucidate the role of art in human life. According to Schiller, men in modern society experiment a conflict between the cultivation of individual talent and the welfare of their community as a single being. This conflict results in an alienation of the being and its consequent fragmentation. Taking this into account, Schiller states there are two aspects of human nature to be considered: the sense drive and the form drive. The sense, or sensuous drive, is born from man s physical existence, and thrives to achieve constant change of matter within a limit of time (finite). It is man s most primitive state . On the other hand, the form drive, born from man s rational nature, thrives to free man and maintain his person despite all the changes of his condition overlooking a limited time frame (infinite). This duality of human nature brings forth an imbalance in man s nature when one of the senses overpowers the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. The Effects Of Capitalism On The Relationships People Durkheim perhaps provides the most analysis specifically on the effects of capitalism on the relationships people have. In general, he argues that the Expansion of the division of labour led to a change in social solidarity and thus the relations people had with each other. In terms of the change in social solidarity he argues that pre capitalism society was less individualistic, as can been in his statement that It was because men were grouped, and thought of themselves in the forms of groups, that in their ideas they grouped other things, and in the beginning the two modes of grouping were merged to the point of being indistinct (Durkheim, E Emirbayer, M.2003.pg.93). Durkheim refers to this kind of social solidarity as Mechanical solidarity which means society is thus divided into quite small components which completely envelop the individual (Durkheim,E.1902.as quoted in. Lukes,S.1992.pg.149) therefore creating no room for individual interests and actions in societies characterized by this form of solidarity. Durkheim further argues that this is done through the conscience collective which is extensive and strong and harmonizes men s movements in detail (Durkheim.1902 as quoted in.Lukes,S.1992.pg.151/152). Most importantly, Durkheim explicitly states that Segmented social structures were further characterized by a low degree of interdependence (Durkheim 1902 as quoted in Lukes,S.1992.pg.150). However, this form of solidarity is not what characterizes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Leading Change Is Never Easy Leading change is never easy. Many individuals want to reach their goals fast, but the process of change takes time. It needs patience, persistence and learning from mistakes (MarhГЎnkovГЎ, 2010). The centre for the aging needs a change in the activities that take place. Currently, the events that are scheduled in the center are not serving the purpose they should. The members feel that they do not personally associate with the events like bingo, trivia, and reading the newspaper. There needs to be a variety of activities and not just the three that are currently being offered. The range gives the members an array of activities to choose from, and they can go for one they love and not just engage in an activity because it is the only one available. The staff members will have an easier job because the patron will be occupied and happy with the new events, which means that the staff is not so engrossed in what is happening with the patrons. The theories of aging especially disengagement, modernization, and activity theories emphasize on the importance of the social aspect in those who are aging (Charles, Carstensen, 2010). The members have had to change their lives and have lost some roles they used to undertake especially now that they are at the center. Provision of other social activities means that the individuals can get a replacement for the roles they have lost by being away from their homes and families (Jin, 2010). These activities will help establish a positive sense of self because they feel useful, and it usually matters to them that they can still engage in such activities. The change will ensure that the seniors are able to develop a positive self concept because they will feel useful. The change will also help them develop a sense of belonging because they will be engaging in an activity of their choice, which means it is something they love doing. I went to the NCO club at lunch time, after work, and on weekends to play the slots machines, until the club section for dancing opened. Nonetheless, being at the club constantly made people asked me if I worked there. It made sense to me to work, have fun, and get paid. I love to be surrounded by all different types of people. Positions were needed to be filled, so I applied for the bartender position. Everyone knew me by name. Since I was in the military, permission from my Commander and supervisor was need. • 9. Who Is To Blame For Romeo And Juliet s Death Romeo and Juliet Romeo and Juliet is a play written by William Shakespeare in the 14th century. It is a beautiful tragedy about two star crossed lovers and their journey together despite their feuding families protests. As a result of said feud, both Romeo and Juliet ended their lives, as a result of thinking that the other was dead. If we take this kind of situation and put it into the modern world, someone would be blamed for these tragic deaths. The only question is who. Their parents are to blame the Montagues and the Capulets. Of course, to craft your opinion on this topic, you must first understand the fictional background of the Montagues and the Capulets. Although the play doesn t offer a backstory, readers can easily see how much tension there is between the two families. They acknowledge it too, but most of the evidence for my conclusion comes from characters other than the Capulet and Montague head of households. Verona, where this play takes place, has a prince that notices all the conflict going on between the families. He says, right after a fight scene from which Tybalt (a Capulet) and Mercutio (a Montague) emerge dead, Romeo slew him; he slew Mercutio. Who now the price of his dear blood doth owe? (3.1.175 176.) The prince is pretty much fed up with the fighting between the Montagues and the Capulets. After this scene, readers of Romeo and Juliet can safely infer that the death of a Montague and the death of a Capulet will not be the last. There did not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Male Underachievment Ia Introduction. Male Underachievement continues to be a major part of academics, not only in the Caribbean but worldwide. It has been heavily encouraged through negative stereotypes as well as media. For example in some television series, the protagonist is shown as being too cool for school and in some cases has failing grades. The problem of maleunderachievement is becoming more prevalent within our society today, and can be seen as result due to a vichyssoise of problems such as peer pressure, negative portrayal by the media and lack of proper upbringing in homes. This problem continues to be detrimental to our society, not only in terms of the short term but also in the long run. The best solution for the lack of performance in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore we can see that in Trinidad the marginalization of the father figure role is leading to not only an increase in male underachievement but also eventually an increase in other social problems such as crime. Singh S. (2007) sees underachievement as occurring even at higher levels of education. For instance she has noted that females have yet again outshone males with 65 percent of the first degrees and 63 percent of higher degrees being secured by females. This presents a worrying situation as it means that there would be less men who are educated and employable within the country, what this could lead to is an eventual labour vacuum, due to the inability to fill positions. This she argues is based mainly on cultural factors, which must be addressed. If this is not done, the performance of males may continue to spiral downwards leading to disastrous results. Data Collection Sources This study enlisted the use of both primary and secondary sources of data. Primary sources refer to data that has been collected by the researcher themselves, while secondary sources refers to all data collected from through another person s work. The population surveyed consisted of twenty (20) teenagers, who were chosen at random. This was done to eliminate any bias. The purpose of this project ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. The Drug Of Red Blood Cells Erythropoietin is a hormone that is produced by the kidneys in response to a decrease in the oxygen carrying capacity of red blood cells in circulation (2). From the kidneys, erythropoietin (EPO) enters the blood stream and enters the bone marrow where it stimulates an increase in the production of red bloodcells (1, 2). This mechanism functions as a negative feedback loop since the signaling of an increase in the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood due to an increased number of red blood cells inhibits further production of EPO. The release of EPO is very sensitive to the level of oxygen carrying capacity in the blood. The simple occurrence of red blood cells death will trigger its release to ensure normal levels are maintained (1).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An important aspect to producing synthesized EPO is the use of mammalian cells. EPO contains 40% carbohydrates which are important to the stability and biosynthesis of recombinant EPO (5). In 1984, EPO was able to be cloned and synthesized for use by using recombinant DNA technology (1, 3, 4, 5). The biological properties of synthesized EPO are very similar to the original hormone found naturally in the body (3). The importance of the mammalian cell carbohydrate composition allowed for the carbohydrate portions of recombinant EPO to be almost identical to the carbohydrate portions of native EPO (3). Success in creating synthetic EPO on a large scale that mimics native EPO in humans allowed for the implementation of synthesized EPO for medicinal purposes. Synthesized erythropoietin became the first hematopoietic growth factor to be used in clinical settings (1). The discovery of synthesized EPO has provided patients with renal failure and severe anemia the ability to reverse the effects of these disorders and improve the oxygen carrying capacity of their circulatory system (1, 5). Individuals with kidney damage or renal failure are in need of EPO the most. Since adults make EPO in their kidneys, any damage to the renal system will alter the ability to produce enough EPO to sufficiently restore red blood cell levels (1, 5). • 13. Persuasive Essay About Running Running is a physically demanding sport. If you are looking for a way to get in shape, then you should consider running. Running uses every muscle in your body because you are engaging every aspect of yourself in the activity. Also, running is a great way to incorporate more cardio into your workout. Runningis not just about getting in shape and staying shape; but running involves many fun activities and sports. Some sports that involve running are track and cross country. If you are a competitive individual, then you should consider track or cross country. If you are a more laid back individual, then you can take into consideration mud runs or glow/color runs. Those events are always fun, and you get dirty while participating in the event. Running is a good way to get in shape and have fun doing so, but before you begin running, you need to know the basics of how to begin. The first step to begin running is to start with runs/walks. You will start by adding one minute of running for every four minutes of walking. Gradually increase your running time, so that eventually you will be running for twice the amount of time that you spend walking. Also, interval running is a good beginners workout. You start by jogging for one minute, then walking for one minute, then you should increase the time by one minute each time until you are running for five minutes and walking for five minutes. Caryl Phillips The Nature of Blood Essay Caryl Phillips The Nature of Blood On its most immediate level, Caryl Phillips The Nature of Blood narrates several stories of the Jewish Diaspora, using the familiar Shakespearean character Othello to provide a counterpoint to the others experiences of displacement. The Nature of Blood thus initially seems to fit awkwardly among texts by other West Indian authors who use the Caribbeanas the setting of their work or incorporate West Indian characters into their work. Through his multi stranded narrative, however, Phillips creates a geographical setting that mirrors the multi regional influence of the Caribbean. The first narrative of The Nature of Blood unsettles the existence of geographical home by questioning optimistic views of settlement. Their dialogue reveals Moshe s unease with the claim to Israel as a new Jewish state, even as Stephan expresses optimism: Tell me, what will be the name of the country? Our country, I said. The country will belong to you too (Phillips 3). While Stephan insists upon claiming Israel both for himself and Moshe, Moshe resists this possessiveness, hence his inquiry about the country rather than his country. Even after Stephan asserts that Moshe has as much stake in Israel as the other settlers, Moshe hesitates, failing even to remember the name of the new country. Analysis Of A Pair Of Tickets By Amy Tan A Pair of Tickets by Amy Tan uses unpretentious yet intense symbolism and imagery to make a wonderful story with layers of importance and significant profundity that one can t completely acknowledge unless you read it more than once. The story is around an American conceived Chinese lady, Jing mei, who goes to Chinato meet her twin stepsisters that her mom was compelled to relinquish numerous prior years. Since her mom had passed away just a couple of months prior, the meeting is full of vulnerability and bitterness. Jing mei battles with self character issues and what it truly intends to be Chinese. En route, she takes in reality about the reasons her mom deserted her sisters and the significance behind their names. At last, she at last associates with her sisters and makes the passionate association with her Chinese legacy. With regards to symbolism and imagery, Amy Tan seasons her story with words like dark, dull, and desolate which passes on to the peruser a feeling of how Jing mei felt about her life after her mom s demise. Dim and boring suggest an absence of warmth and a fundamental pity that appear to pervade the story. Jing mei has clashing sentiments about her late mother, her Chinese self, and her relatives, hence adding to the general grayness of the story. Adding to that fundamental bitterness is Jing mei s own feeling of uncertainty which can be set up when she sees the general population on the bamboo platform. The concept of framing which is a part of prospect theory (Kahneman and Tversky 1979) is closely related to the formation of reference price in the consumer s mind. Outcomes above the consumer s reference point are presented as gains and it affects choice, judgment, and risk taking differently than the same alternatives which are below the reference point and are coded as losses by the consumer. In extant literature, there have been efforts to explain the framing effects of sales promotionby referring to mental accounting theory. Thaler and Johnson (1986) have proposed that consumers use hedonic rules to edit their mental accounts, therefore when they see a small gain (e.g., pricediscount) relative to a big loss (e.g., purchasing cost), they prefer to separate them psychologically into two different accounts rather than integrate them. This is the silver lining principle (based on prospect theory) and it also says that utility functions are concave for gains and convex for losses, and the curve for losses is steeper than that for gains. Because the size of a promotionis usually small relative to the purchasing cost, consumers should create a new account for the promotion rather than integrate it into the purchasing cost, regardless of the promotional types. This proposed study aims to use mental accounting theory and sales framing concepts to upgrading promotions and compare the attractiveness of non monetary promotions versus price discount promotions in a ... The Stereotypes Of Disney PrincessesBamboozling Young Girls Disney Princesses Bamboozling Young Girls Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, and Ariel are all names almost every young female can recall. These are just a few of Disney s most memorable characters, the Disney princesses which are idolized by young girls everywhere. These princesses are portrayed to be strong willed, optimistic, and hardworking women who overcome various hardships throughout their life. Talk about being the perfect role models for little girls everywhere but are they really? Although they may seem to have admirable qualities, by the end of these Disney movies, each princess receives their happy ending with their prince charming at their side. This concludes that happiness is obtained only by finding your prince charming . A princess happily ever after , that is repeated in these iconic Disney movies, distorts what true happiness is and could be for girls around the world. This perceived reality promoted by Disney then becomes engraved in our young girls minds through ways that are much like propaganda in the political arena. Propaganda is a form of language commonly used to manipulate intended audiences. In Disney s case, their intended audience consists of young girls around the world. These Disney films display methods of propaganda, such as doublespeak (Lutz) and the two extremes fallacy (Cross), which result in our young girls believing in a false reality. There needs to be attention brought about this flawed perception of a sole happiness that is continuously depicted by Disney and shared through ways of propaganda, as it is damaging the minds of our young girls the future contributors of our society. Propaganda can be displayed in many ways as it, ...is simply a means of persuasion... (Cross 247). You can persuade someone by giving them few options, sugar coating the truth, lying, or even by misleading them. Doublespeak is an art of language that is used to manipulate, therefore making it a notable example of a way propaganda may be portrayed. William Lutz describes doublespeak in his article, The World of Doublespeak , as the product of clear thinking and is carefully designed and constructed to appear to communicate but in fact to mislead. The Universal Law Of Nature The Formula of the Universal Law (of Nature) is the first formulation of the categorical imperative in Kant s Grounding for the Metaphysics of Morals, in which he proposes to act as if the maxim of your action were to become through your will a universal law of nature. (Kant, 421) For example, telling the truth is considered a universal law. However, many skeptics argue that it is illogical because of human behavior, we as a society are put into dire situations in which lying is necessary to protect life. I will argue that the categorical imperative is an ideal for humanity that has been deeply misunderstood and is valid in relation to the Kingdom of Ends formula. During the Nazi era, many were subjected to their religious beliefs and citizens were being asked whether or not he or she were a Jew. In a hypothetical response, due to the nature of the question, if you were to say yes, you would then be executed under the law of a harsh dictator. It is obvious to say that, the duty to preserve your own life would be threatened in regards to the murderer asking the question. We can infer that although lying is morally wrong in regards to the categorical imperative, it is not wrong to the murderer who is not conforming to the moral requirements. Therefore, we shall look into the necessary moral requirements for categorical imperative to be a reasonable obligation for us to follow. Meditations outlines Descartes method of justifying, through reasoning alone, his initial beliefs concerning the existence of reality as he perceives it. This challenge of scepticism is itself achieved through adopting a temporary sceptical approach in meditations 1 and 2. By way of mental deconstruction and evaluation of all that he had previously considered true, Descartes is left with only the elements that he is able to ascertain are certain and indubitable . In the first wave Descartes questions the legitammacy of the information provided by the senses. She was commemorated with the highest honor, yet she was still thinking of others. The second reason Mother Teresa is a hero is because she is courageous. For instance, many people could have shunned her for helping the unwanted, but she found the courage and strength in her heart to help those in need. Also, she helped a particular group that had leprosy, which is a very contagious disease. She set up many clinics in order to help these people even though she put herself at risk of catching the disease. The final reason Mother Teresa is a hero is because she was a strong leader. Mother Teresa was a situational leader, for example she helped people according to their situation, if they were starving she would give them food, if they were homeless she would provide a home for them to say at, or if they were sick she helped them to heal. Such as rare earth elements (REE; e.g., La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Lu), major elements (e.g., Fe, K, Na, Al, Ca and Mg) and trace elements (e.g., As, Ba, Co, Cr, Cs, Hf, Sc, Ta, Ti, Th and Zr), in both source soil and sediment samples, have been used in sediment fingerprinting studies (Horowitz et al. 2012; Hughes et al. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Natural geogenic REE signatures sometimes may be a potential proxy for identifying lacustrine sediment sources and soil erosion rates (Wen et al. 2014). Though REEs has many advantages, owning its relatively high cost, REEs have not been extensively used. There are three approaches that can account for potential differences in sediment geochemistry relating to particle size and mineralogy. One commonly used way of normalization is to use measured bulk concentrations in the total sediment sample to account for differences in sediment geochemistry. The diluting effects of non reactive constitutes (e.g., coarse sediment, quartz and feldspar grains) can be removed. The second way of normalization is to divide the concentration of the potential tracer by the concentration of the conservative element (e.g., Al, Ti and Li). The third method is to incorporate a correction factor into the mixing model (Collins et al. 1998). Moreover, the geochemical tracer method can also be applied to contemporary and historic sedimentary deposits for reconstructing temporal changes in sediment provenance at the catchment scale (Thevenon et al. 2013). 4.3 Radionuclides Atmospheric fallout radionuclides(FRN), such as 7Be, 10Be, 137Cs, 210Pb, 239Pu and 240Pu, effectively tag surface sediments and the concentration declines markedly with depth and are preferentially absorbed to clay minerals and organic matter due to their high specific surface area which renders them chemically ... • 40. A General Sense, By Bram Stoker s Dracula 1. Romanticism, in a general sense, was an artistic movement that began at the end of the eighteenth century, and, particularly in music, dominated the nineteenth century. Artistically, many traits of Romanticism directly contrast Classicism. While the Classicism reflects balance, logic and reason, universality, allusion, and a strong sense of the physical world, Romanticism thrives on sentimentality, untamed nature, diversity, and the supernatural. The arts, in general, are the most obvious product of this time. Untamed nature had been an interest for quite some time, carrying over from the transcendental movement, notably from authors such as Henry David Thoreau. The interest in the supernatural was inseparable from Romanticism, appearing in every art form. Novels such as Bram Stoker s Dracula demonstrated the curiosity in the occult. Notable musical that also concern this topic include Hector Berlioz s opera Faust, the Witches Sabbath from Symphonie Fantastique (which also includes a demonic version of the Dies irae chant), Franz Liszt s Mephisto Waltz, and Modest Mussorgsky s Night on Bald Mountain. Much of the Romantic Movement in music also involves the portrayal of human emotions, such as Hector Berlioz s affections for Irish actress Harriet Smithson through his Symphonie Fantastique. The social constructs also began to evolve during this period. Carrying over from the late Classical period was a large middle class. Coupled with improvements in printing ... • 44. Analysis Of The Play Macbeth Abigail Castillo WHUM December 2014 Final exam Macbeth There are many conflicts found in the play Macbeth by Shakespeare both external and internal. There is man vs. society, man vs. self, man vs. man, and even man vs. supernatural. In my opinion, I believe that the central conflict in Macbeth s plot is man vs. self, an internal conflict. This internal conflict begins when Macbeth overhears the three witch sisters, also known as the Weird Sisters, making a prediction that one day he will be become King and rule. From this point on in the play, he (Macbeth) is conflicted about murdering Duncan, King of Scotland, in order to gain power. Macbeth starts of the play as a good, honest warrior and the well trusted captain of King Duncan. Macbeth begins to experience the conflict of man vs self because of his wise to become king (as well as his trust in the witches prediction) which directly goes against his loyalty to King Duncan. Even though he goes through internal conflicts with himself over committing this crime many times his ambition wins, and he becomes a killer. His conscience seems to overcome everything else by the end, and this is also true for other characters in the play. This ambition combined with guilt creates a man vs self conflict all throughout the play. Ambition has severe consequences as seen when Macbeth is slain and branded a tyrant. Shakespeare does not give his character the chance to enjoy what he has done as a way possibly to imply that it is more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 46. Eyewitness Identification Evidence Essay Witness identification evidence is the second most incriminating type of evidence bar a confession (Brandon Davies, 1973 as cited by Valentine Heaton, 1999). However, The Innocence Project reports it is also the leading cause of wrongful convictions in the US, more specifically, 72% of DNA exoneration cases since 1989. The aim of line ups is to give the witness a fair test of recognition. Additionally, the suspect (who may be innocent) must also be given a fair chance. In the 1976 the Devlin Report was created following an investigation into a signification number of wrongful convictions. The aim of the report was to minimise convictions based on solely eye witness testimony. However, this rule is not specified in law indicating that false identifications are still a likely possibility. The Police and Criminal Evidence Act (1984) (UK code of practice) aims to increase the likelihood of accurate identifications by providing guidelines to law enforcements. Although PACE provides guidelines for how to conduct line ups, the incidence of false identifications is still common. It is of great importance to ensure that eyewitness identification of suspect s can be as accurate and reliable as possible, especially considering the frequency and importance of its use. Factors that affect the accuracy of eyewitness identification must be addressed and ameliorated to avoid future miscarriages of justice (i.e. prosecuting the wrong person). For generations these stories were pasted down by word of mouth, the two most important being the Iliad and the Odyssey, created by an author history knows as Homer. Widely considered the first and greatest epic poet by the ancient Greeks, Homer is credited as the author of the epic poems the Iliad and the Odyssey. He is believed to be a bard, a singer of songs about the deeds of heroes and the ways of the gods. His stories were part of a long standing oral tradition that dated back to the time of the Trojan War, which is believed to have taken place around 1200 BCE (Sayre, 115).
