Effect of Sound on a Film Scene Sound and music in the cinematic context is an effective means of
means of communication. Motion picture soundtrack, sound effects, background music, diegetic
and non diegetic sound can supplement, enhance and expand upon the meaning of the film s
narrative. The overlap and interaction of dialogue, sound effects, atmospheric sound, score music
and silence create a harmonious and synchronized counterpoint to the image of the scene. Music
in a film creates a point of experience for the spectator. Patterns of tension and release
exemplified by the sound of the scene provide a sense of organization, connection and meaning to
the audience. In my short clip from 12 years a Slave I have used music as a part of cinematic
diagesis as well as a means of communication to my audience the psychological drama of the
narrative at the subconscious level.
Sound in a scene can communicate meaning and give life to a moving image. As I created the
music for the scene I had certain intentions as a director and composer which required the
construction of a multifaceted soundtrack to convey the narrative of the scene. The music is

INTRODUCTION
Indonesia is by far the largest Southeast Asian nation, both in population and land area with the
majority of the population, Muslim (OMF International, n.d). Indonesia, also has one of the
strictest laws regarding drug offences and has demonstrated to not be afraid or be persuaded by
neighboring states not to enforce it (Aquino, n.d). Eight out of the eleven countries within
Southeast Asia still retain the death penalty for drug related offences in which Indonesia is the
only country within Southeast Asia that still carries out its executions by firing squad (Death
Penalty Information Centre, 2013) (see Table 1). The death penalty was extended to include drug
offences and only introduced into Indonesian law in 1997 (Berman, 2013). However, Indonesia
continues to enforce this penalty in the wake of the 2013 execution of a Malawian national
becoming the first execution in some years (see Table 2) (Delaney, 2013, В¶23).

The English colonists were under British rule while in North America before the mid to late 18th
century. They were under such rule considered salutary neglect. This meaning British rule was not

South Park wanted to show homage to the French satirical paper that published comedic pictures
of Muhammad. The creators dedicated 200 and 201 to the paper after their own convictions;
both episodes would feature Muhammad as well. Comedy Central received threats of extreme
violence if the prophet Muhammad was displayed in any way on the show. The creative group
behind South Park was prepared to endure the repercussions of their comedy. In 200,
Muhammad is in a truck to include, but exclude the character from vision. I think they were
concerned about the approach of giving in to the ultimatum, and essentially backing down
altogether. The boundaries regarding freedom of expression should not adjust to the whims or
threats of bullies otherwise known as terrorists. The network received more threats of terror and
the morning of the airing of 201, the network censored Muhammad with a giant box all over his
face with CENSORED written on it. There are no copies of 201 uncensored available whatsoever
and you can only watch the episode on the commemorative DVD package of the season. There is
still absolutely no streaming of any kind for either episode, almost 10 years
