The Impact Of Paul Gustave Dore s 1869 Oil On Canvas,...
Around two months ago, I posted an image of Paul Gustave Dore s 1869 oil on canvas, Andromeda, to
a large Internet forum called Reddit. If you re unfamiliar with the website Reddit , it is simply a site
that is heavily run by the contribution of users, providing open discussions about specific ideas and
news. To my amazement, the post made it to the front page, receiving much attention, but along with it
came other ethical discussions that related to art as a general consensus and how the idea of beauty has
influenced current viewers with their expectations for museums and galleries.
With comments on my post such as Actual art on [Reddit!?] and Art isn t art unless it s old it was at
this point that I became more aware of Thomas Horsfall s view of, what he put as, arts bitterest
enemies. To elaborate further, Horsfall suggested in his paper, Art in Large Towns... dated 1882,
historical and modern art visually entices the average viewer and their knowledge about its context,
but people who only recognise a piece for its visual aesthetics have poor knowledge of the true
approach to art. So, do we, the viewers go to museums and galleries in hope of finding beautiful
imagery? Are we, as suggested by Horsfall, positively influenced on our ideas of beauty and taste by
our viewings?
Well, firstly... What is beauty? By Oxford dictionary s definition, beauty is defined by the combination
of qualities, such as shape, colour, or form, that pleases the aesthetic

Costco Is An American Wholesale Corporation
Costco is an American wholesale corporation that operates based on the membership warehouse club,
while Target is a retailer corporation that specializes in discount merchandise. Even though both
Costco and Target have different target operation, they are the top two largest companies in the retailer
industry in the United States. In order to analyze and compare the financial health of these two
company, it is important to recognize these three key terms: liquidity, solvency, and profitability.
Liquidity is a financial term used to determine the ability of a company to pay off its short term debts,
which will be due within the next year or in an operating cycle. In another word, liquidity is a very
important indicator to evaluate a company s financial health. Liquidity ratio shows a comparison
between the most liquid assets and short term obligations of a company. A higher liquidity expresses
that the company has not only a better ability to pay off its short term debts but also a greater amount
of cash for an unexpected needs. In another word, when a company has a low liquidity, the company
may face a risk to pay its short term debt and struggle to fund its long term operation. The current ratio
is one of the most common and useful terms used to measure the liquidity of a company. It suggests
the capability of a company to pay back its liabilities with its assets. The current ratio is computed by
dividing current assets by current liabilities. According to a financial

Mass Incarceration And Overcrowded Jails
Research Questions
Research Question No. 1 Did Three Strikes You re Out contribute to the problem of mass
incarceration and overcrowded jails and prisons? The slogan ?Three Strikes You re Out? was for a
toughening stand on crime endorsed by the federal government in the 1980 s. Historically speaking,
this rhetoric stood as the ideology behind the War on Drugs as a logical and necessary response to a
rise in drug crime and the emergence of crack cocaine in inner city communities (Alexander, 2011).
The problem to be identified for the purposes of this report was the lack of an actual rise on crime.
Nonetheless, the results were an increase in drug convictions. Those ... Show more content on

Recruitment Proposal For Senior Level Talent
MEMORANDUM
TO: CEO, HSS
FROM: Alyise Johnson, HR Director
DATE: April 29, 2015
SUBJECT: Recruitment and Staffing Proposal for Senior Level Talent As requested during our last
meeting, you shared with me your personal desire and HSS s need to establish a new recruitment and
selection process for employing senior level staff. Below I have provided a few of the top options that
the organization can easily put in place for the use of recruiting and selection new senior level staff.
Recruitment Methods Recruiting suitable candidates that are able to adequately handle and manage
senior level positions of the organization takes a great deal of time and patience. Placing
inexperienced individuals into advanced positions within HHS could ... Show more content on

2. Recruiters. For organizations that do not have the time or the resources to find suitable candidates,
they hire headhunters and recruiting companies to do the searching for them. These headhunters and
recruiters hunt down the best individuals in their particular fields, having thoroughly researched their
complete background, including their experience and accomplishments, and basically sell these
individuals to the appropriate organization. (Sutton, 2009) These companies also certify the candidates
they recommend, providing a money back guarantee if an organization is not completely satisfied after
a specific period of time.
3. Gamification. Gamification is the use of gaming principles and design in non gaming situations and
identifies potential employees by posing virtual challenges that require the skills necessary for a given
job. Gamification is effective because it can test a skill set, associate the company with something
people enjoy and produce a virtual feel for the culture of a particular workplace.
Selection Methods Selecting suitable candidates for senior level positions of the organization is also
an essential undertaking. There are several considerations an organization must take into an account
about a candidate before hiring them.
1. Credentials Assessment. It is very important to know what experience and skillset a candidate
brings with

Comparing Of Mice And Men And What s Eating Gilbert Grape
What s Eating Gilbert Grape Dir. Lasse Hallstrom and Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck are two
very similar pieces of storytelling about caring for the misfortunate. In Of Mice and Men George cares
for his mentally challenged friend Lennie, and in, What s Eating Gilbert Grape, Gilbert takes care of
his mentally disabled brother Arnie. Both George and Gilbert care more for the well being and defence
of their loved one, than they do for their own well being in most cases. In the end of What s Eating
Gilbert Grape, Gilbert s mother dies; in a dramatic and tangible gesture to rid himself of his past,
Gilbert burns their house down. In a symbolic similarity, at the end of Of Mice and Men George kills
Lennie in an effort to release him of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
George kills Lennie not because he doesn t like Lennie but because he s tired of dealing with him, and
he wants to be able to start over and have a good life, and he knows he can t if Lennie is around.
George is always saying how he wants him and Lennie to live on a farm but is always doubting if
Lennie can stay on track, and he is always wondering if Lennie is gonna mess up their chances.
Comparably Gilbert s decision to burn down his house is his way of proclaiming his starting over, and
symbolically saying that nothing good ever came of that house and that nothing ever would. Gilbert is
talking to Becky and is saying how much he hates living in his house and that he hates how lazy and
fat his mom is. This is more obvious for Gilbert because throughout the whole movie he is completely
selfless and only cares about taking care of his family. Both of their decisions were very important to
show that they were finally taking control of their lives, and that they decided to finally do something
for themselves. Unfortunately in order to do this both characters looked to destructive and violent
ways of freeing themselves. Perhaps these burdens were so great that they had to take destructive
measures to alleviate themselves from them, or perhaps they simply never learned another away and
had to take extreme measure to enact any change in their

Pascal s Wager Analysis
I came up with an extension of Pascal s Wager.
Pascal never addressed other religions (which makes his thesis as is very flawed), so I improved upon
it a risk calculus that included all other religions.
The idea is: in the perspective as a gambler, and the afterlife as form of gambling (in which the player
was trying their best to not receive any form of suffering), it would be the most beneficial to believe in
a religion which claims 100% hell for unbelievers while also not being mutually exclusive in benefits
from other kinds of religion.
(For example, if you are Christian, and the thesis of Buddhism is actually true, you ll still be in an
advantageous position in reincarnation if you follow Christianity out by loving others and in

FIFA Controversy
Based in Zurich, The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) is the international
governing body of association football, futsal, and soccer. It has been recognized as the United
Nations of Football , affiliated with 209 associations across the globe (FIFA, 2015). Like any other
sport organization however, FIFA has long experienced allegations following the decision of Russia
being awarded the 2018 World Cup and Quatar having the 2022 hosting rights. According to the
reports, the United States Department of Justice reviewed the contracts related to the 2014 Brazil
World Cup involving FIFA, commercial partners, and suppliers.

However, after almost four years of being awarded, reports of corruption, vote buying, and human
rights abused has surfaced the news (Chi, 2014). The Telegraph reported that the former FIFA Vice
President, Jack Warner, and his family were paid millions from a company controlled by a former
Quatari football official in order to sway the vote on the 2022 World Cup. Supporting documents have
showed that payments totaling $750,000 were made to Warner s sons, and additional $400,000 was
paid to one of his employees (Claire et al, 2014). According to writer Samuel Chi from the Diplomat,
he resigned from the organization in June 2011, but not before votes were cast in December 2010.
Investigations from the FBI took effect immediately regarding the issue of Mr. Warner and his links to
the Quatari bid. Russia was also subject to controversy of breaking FIFA rules. Allegedly, the Sunday
Times reported that the president of Russia, Vladmir Putin, was a suspect of engaging in vote trading
and vote buying to win the support of FIFA voters (Sunday Times, 2014). The allegations were
contained within a database. Both Russia and Quatar have denied accusations, but US and Swiss
authorities continue to investigate the organization s bidding process. Although Domenico Scala, the
head of FIFA s audit and compliance committee has not found real evidence against Russia and
Quatar, he warns

Chomsky s Theory Of Human Language
In the 1960s, Empiricism and Behaviorism reigned, yet these views are now commonly mostly
considered absurd due to Chomsky. Noam Chomsky, a prominent cognitive linguist and a great
contributor to analytical philosophy, is in awe of the concept of human language. The properties of
language enable humans to combine individual concepts together in indefinitely many ways, making
the range of human thought virtually unlimited. Chomsky is fascinated that language enables humans
to say virtually anything and cooperate to make plans with each other. The faculty of language is
arguably what makes human beings cognitively distinct from other creatures. Through narrowing the
scope of human language, adopting a rationalistic influence, proposing his Cognitive Development
Theory, and including essentialist aspects in his philosophy, Chomsky gives linguistics a respectable
place in the greater sphere of epistemology.
Noam Chomsky creates a narrow scope of linguistics, reducing the focus of its study. Chomsky
believes studying the meaning, reference, and use of language should be excluded from the field of
linguistics. He insists the study must be focused toward the capacity of humans to acquire, to utilize,
and invent languages as well as the abstract structural patterns found in a particular language under
some idealization . Chomsky, apart from narrowing the scope, narrows the faculty of language itself.
Previously, the focus was centered on the diversity of linguistic performance and

The Leadership Practice Of A Nursing Student
As a nursing student, I have had great success forming therapeutic relationships with my clients and
have received positive feedback from clinical instructors about my patient communication. However, I
experience uncertainty when interacting with peers or colleagues. My lack of confidence translates
into difficulty forming effective professional relationships. This assessment is reflected in my Clinical
Leadership Survey as a deficit in the leadership practice of Encouraging the Heart. This practice
includes behaviors such as recognizing contributions, celebrating accomplishments, and providing
feedback (Patrick, Laschinger, Finegan, and Wong, 2011).
The results of my baseline survey support the theory that my weakness is in interprofessional
communication. Alternatively however, I recorded equal strength of fourteen out of fifteen in the other
four leadership practices. Each of these four practices incorporates an element of Emotional
Intelligence and reflective practice. Based on my clinical experiences and feedback from instructors, I
agree with these results and can identify that interprofessional communication is the skill I must
develop to become an effective leader.
Personal Strategies Over the Term
Throughout this semester, I worked through the Unfreeze and Move stages of Lewin s Force Field
Model for change. Similar to the Assessment and Planning steps of the Nursing Process, the

Bribing Corrupt Bureaucrats Might Not Be a Terrible Idea...
This is an excellent way to show that as a human race we are constantly looking for a mode of
perfection but that mode is never there because we can never find it. What we can do is to get as close
as possible to the ideal situation. This ideal situation should mean that there is some form of Pareto
efficiency in the system and most people stand to benefit. If the value system allows for the existence
of some classes to gain more than others this will create inequality. In such a case the government will
always try to change policies to make the shift. But then the problem is that sooner of later another
class will prevail of the current ruling classes will continue to hold some positions of power that will

The exposition of the IT is also a contributor towards this. The Gandhian morality of not showcasing
your wealth no longer holds true when a certain business man in Mumbai builds a 27 storied building
for a family of 5. The economic prowess of the nation is hence showcased by such successful
entrepreneurs. The height of the positives of economic reforms took place when India can acheievd a
growth rate of 9% in 2007 . Today India is known as among the 10 largest economies of the world.
But having stated all this, it needed to note that India still stands poorly in world social parameters. We
still are amongst the pooter nations of the world. Poverty ranks are still high. We are one of the most
corrupt nations in the world and indexes do not rank us well. Socially our parameter are not high. This
will sooner or later reflect upon our economics as well. This will be demonstrated in the rest of the
essay. Corruption is considered bad and after the several scams that have hit India over the apst 4 5
years we have clearly not changed things. But there are studies that suggest otherwise.
The 2005 paper suggests that bribing bureaucrats might not be such a bad idea. This is because the
corrupt bureaucrats can force the government into talking helpful measures. The need for these
measures might be a result of the demands from the bribers who expects some changes from the
corrupt bureaucrats. The economy could benefit

Ever since I was a child I have an inclination towards mathematics, physics and computers. These
three fields of study used to fascinate me a lot. From a very early age I started reading about the
scientists and their work. Over the years I read about some famous engineers and scientists in field of
mathematics, physics and computers. Among all the scientists, I found Dennis Macalistair Ritchie s
work very interesting and influential.
He is not only the father/creator of the C programming language, but also the co creator of the UNIX
operating system. He is undoubtedly, the biggest innovator and creator in the field of Computer
science. He worked with his longtime colleague Ken Thomson to create UNIX and for that they won
the Turing award from ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) in 1983. He had a Bachelors

Surveys and Experiments
Introduction Surveys and experiments can prove to be an extremely valuable tool that organizations
can use to gain pertinent information. In order to effectively utilize these tools firms must pay careful
attention to the design, methodology, and ethical issues of the experiment chosen. Among these issues
are variables in conducting experiments with human subjects, design elements affecting the accuracy
of the experiment, and questions of methodology. The information below addresses each of these
concerns and describes how experiments can become a valuable tool for organizations to plan for the

Analysis Of Daniel Kahneman s The Surety Of Fools
Voltaire once said, Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is an absurd one. We live in a world
that is constantly changing and does not grant the certainty that people desire. But, people want the
stability of knowing what is going to happen; this is why certainty is absurd. In his essay The Surety
of Fools, Daniel Kahneman provides examples of people using a phenomenon he calls the illusion of
validity. These people strongly believe their actions cause a specific outcome, when in reality there is
statistical evidence that shows their actions have no direct correlation with the outcome. While
Kahneman argues the illusion of validity comes partially from people s tendency to make quick
decisions without fully conveying the causes, it really stems from people s fear of uncertainty from
having a lack of knowledge. Other fields of academia, such as science and economics, have admitted
that uncertainty grounds their thinking processes. Kahneman is inaccurate in neglecting to mention
that it is the fear of uncertainty that really causes the illusion of validity. Kahneman argues that the
illusion of validity comes from fast thinking because it is prone to doubt. Meaning, people naturally
think quickly because they need a reason and so they do not have time to question their explanation.
However, Kahneman neglects to mention that fast thinking roots itself in the fear of uncertainty.
Kahneman begins his essay by describing his experience in evaluating

Henry David Thoreau, And Frederick Douglass
Americas Reformation Many early writers and authors were able to focus on reform itself or the idea
of reforming America. In some cases, these writers focused on advocating for strong social or political
reforms. In other cases, these writers argued for a reform in their own personal perspective. Frederick
Douglass, Henry David Thoreau, and Frances Ellen Watkins Harper all had specific reforms that they
each pushed for individually through their writings. While these three authors had different reasons for
pushing for reformation, they all seem to blend into one overall goal for America and all that is known
to be American. Frederick Douglass was an early American writer that pushed heavily for personal
reform throughout his text, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. In his writing, he goes
through his personal life and all the hardships that he was confronted with. In the very first chapter of
his writing he states, I never saw my mother, to know her as such, more than four or five times in my
life; and each of these times was very short in duration, and at night (Douglass 1182). This explains
that Douglass was taken away from his mother at a very young age, as most slaves in this time were.
This affects Douglass and his mother personally and pushes him to strive for change and freedom
among himself and his family. As a slave, Douglass also realizes that he couldn t pursue the education
that he desired to have. Douglass quotes, I did not, when a slave,

Analysis Of The Book Dostoevsky
Xiaolu Wu In the beginning of Five Articles, Dostoevsky talks about how Russia remains an enigma
to the western world, and how the European view of Russia is narrow, stereotypical, superficial and
largely imaginary. Dostoevsky claims that for Europeans, Russians seem to be barbarians and
Europeans at the same time and their identities remain ambiguous for the Europeans, sometimes even
for themselves. But generally, the idea of Russians for Europeans is that Russians are inferior to other
Europeans, are unfaltering in battles, but are not intelligent and mostly uneducated. But this idea
comes from a detached way of observation even for those Europeans who spend time in Russia
studying this country.
According to Dostoevsky, the Germans come to Russia and judge the Russians by the standard of a
perfect German without realizing that Russians have completely distinct characters. Therefore the
Germans assume an arrogant attitude towards the Russians. While the Frenchmen who go to Russia
bring their stereotypical view of Russia along with them and see everything through the lens of their
preformed stereotypes, like how Russian culture is replaced by the invading new western culture.
However, Dostoevsky refutes this Frenchmen s idea by claiming that the Russians have already taken
the fruit of western civilization and have gone beyond it. The products and ideas coming from western
civilization only serve as a new element, a new force in Russia s process of returning to

the different types out there, almost everyone is connected to the Web in some way. We use social
media to keep up to date with our friends and family, share interesting events that are happening in our
lives, check up on celebrity gossip and world news, and so much more. With Facebook, Twitter,
Instagram, and all the other social media websites out there, the way of life when we had to write

question is, is social media ruining our social skills and personal relationships with people? In this

Out of the six of us, we rarely post a status or picture that portrays ourselves in a negative way or
show the disappointing and unexciting sides to our lives. We want people to think that we are
adventurous, happy, and have amazing experiences all the time, but we do occasionally voice our
stress or anger because we feel that we need at least one person that agrees with us to support our
opinions. Also, all six of us know all of our friends on Facebook in some sort of way. We may have
gone to school together, had a college class together, work together, or just met through mutual
friends, but because we know these people I do not think we over share because we do not talk about
every detail of our lives, especially people we don t know unlike some people. As for being pathetic in
constantly seeking approval through likes and comments, I believe this is something that we grow out
of. I remember in high school, my friends and I would delete a status or picture if it did not get enough
likes in a certain amount of time. As for Sheryl and Carrie, they tend to share important parts of their
life, such as the success their children have, pictures of family, and interesting and funny stories about
the experiences they had. They do not seem to care how many likes they get because the post is
important to them and that is all that matters. As for the four of us that are still in our college years, we
are more careful with what we post because we want people to see our experiences and be jealous of
them. We want people to know we have fun and show off how many friendships we have. Obviously
by looking at the 10 item scale, it is evident that Danielle and I care much more about this than

Jason Before A Fall Essay
Jason of Golden Fleece fame was on the run for his life. Multiple other Argonauts, jealous of Jason s
glory and riches, had chased him away from his home and family, and he was trying to get away from
their fury, hatred, and most of all their murderous jealousy. All he had was a small dagger and a
broken spear shaft to stay alive in an unforgiving land filled with angry Argonaut conspirators. Jason
had previously disappeared in the night when his friend and fellow Argonaut, Orpheus, had warned
him of his dire plight. Now, Jason was alone on the rocks by the seashore, waiting for the dark to grow
so he could travel once more. When night finally fell, Jason crawled slowly over the rough rock
surface to a grove of olive trees. He took a moment to pray to the goddess Athena for wisdom and
protection, then began a westward journey leading him further from his home, flocks, and lands. Jason
had nothing to do but run. His pursuers always struck late at night, when Jason tried to get a few hours

Symbolism Lord Of The Flies
William Golding s Lord of the Flies has many significant symbols that represent the emotions and
thoughts of the castaways in the novel. The meaning of the symbols change along with how the
characters think and act, starting as something innocent and turning dark and sinister. Three important
symbols within the novel are: the conch shell, the signal fire and the beast. The meaning of these
symbols are significantly impacted by the growth of savagery and loss of civilization on the island,
and the change in symbolism allows the reader to better understand the changes among the boys
throughout the novel. Near the beginning of the novel, readers are introduced to the conch shell. The
shell was found accidentally, but was seen as very valuable from the start. Most obscurely, yet most
powerfully, there was the conch. The being that had blown that...was set apart (chapter 1, page 21). It
was used to congregate the castaways to meetings and designate who could speak; in short, the conch
represented order, civility, and authority among the characters. As the novel progresses, this symbol of
civilization loses its power. A majority of the castaways embrace savagery and turn away from order,
there are a few characters however, who remain faithful to the conch and its meaning. The meaning
changes from just a sign of order to a reminder of civilization and a way for characters to hold on to
reality. For example, Ralph, after admitting that he had joined in the

The contemporary foreign policy of the United States represents an evolving continuum of principles,
conceptions and strategies that in part, derived from the particularistic American Cold War experience.
As such, United States foreign policy is neither a static entity, nor is its intentions or direction
uncontested. This essay will examine the underlying issues of identity and how, beginning with the
Truman Doctrine, a distinct articulation of the national interest was evinced that has defined America s
role in the world. In doing so, focus will be given to the development of alliance policy, containment
and its effect on transforming the US posture in the post Cold War international order.
Firstly, it is pertinent to reconsider the traditional narratives that underpin American identity. Inherent
in this is Manifest Destiny, which asserts that Anglo Saxon American s are God s chosen people, with
a superior culture and who are pre ordained to spread civilisation to inferior peoples (Hollander 2009,
169). This tradition offers instructive themes for the formulation of American exceptionalism and its
manifestation into a missionary foreign policy (Hoffmann 1968, 369). It also raises to the forefront the
Manichean character of American policy, its solipsism and tendency to justify geopolitical objectives
in moralistic terms (Lepgold 1995, 372). Thus, US foreign policy is a discourse for reproducing
American identity, containing threats to its core principles and legitimating

Mother Teresa: The Life and Dignity of the Human Person Life and dignity of a human person is the
basis for all Catholic Social Teaching. Mother Teresa embodied this statement throughout her entire
life as she served the poorest of the poor throughout the world. Mother Teresa built schools to teach,
hospitals to cure, orphanages to love, and hospice homes to comfort. All of these projects were based
on the Catholic Church s proclamation human life is sacred and the dignity of the human person is the
foundation of society. ( ) By establishing Missionaries of Charity in 1948, which served society s poor
and marginalized, Mother Teresa influenced world leaders by living the social teachings of the
Catholic Church. Mother Teresa grew up in a very loving family that was committed to their Catholic
faith. Her mother always told her children that they should never eat a bite of food without sharing it
with another. Mother Teresa recalls that her mother often invited the poor of the their town to come
and dine with her family. Her mother s commitment to the needy was deep rooted. She didn t waver
from this commitment even after her husband died leaving her with three young children including
Teresa, who was only eight years old. This family commitment to serve among many experiences in
her homeland of Macedonia is what set the stage for Mother Teresa s life of charity. In

The Rating System Is Entirely Voluntary
The MPAA likes to advertise that their rating system is entirely voluntary. Virtually, their system is

overall life span of a film. The is no realistic alternative other than going through the process of
receiving a rating by the MPAA, editing the film to their liking or taking your chances with the

This board of individuals is almost like the gatekeeper for all films where they can decide the fate of a
film with a label. As a nation we are being robbed of our right to choose the films we want to see and
have our children see, but as individuals what can we do? As an individual one might feel
overwhelmed when discovering an unsettling aspect that may affect our lives. One may think to
themselves what can only one person do to impact a big organization? A way that you can take a step
towards change is to demand it by using your power as a consumer. Take your business away from the
members of the MPAA until they make the changes we need and want. Invest in watching films by
independent distributers, like Sundance. In the world of business, the goal is to profit, we as
consumers hold that power to influence where the market goes, so if we are unhappy they must fix it.
Once the MPAA realizes where their market lies they will make changes to meet consumer need. This
is a key step towards change. One individual making a move leads many more to do the same.

Dual Language Learners Essay
Although all the strategies help me further understand dual language learners, there are a couple that
stand out. Let me start with strategy, planning 5. This strategy helped me to better understand that it is
not only beneficial to pick a book that is related to the academic objective, but also a book that the

A Long Time Citizens
For a long time citizens have always respected the soldiers who stand to protect the nation, but none
care about how they do it or the psychological traumas they go through. After the Iraq War several
disturbing photos were released to the public. People who were distraught like Susan Sontag spoke up
and demanded an explanation for the events that took place in Abu Ghraib prison. Many have
questioned why no punishment was given to the perpetrators, but were disappointed when no direct
answer was given. Sontag tries to make a connection between the photos the military and their leaders,
and what they portray about the American society in her piece Regarding The Torture Of Others. She
displays acts of the military and their leaders showing justification in their act of torture to enemies
outside the United States. The act of generalizing a nation by an event in its history is not effective and
weakens her argument. This even has shaken the nation s image to the world, creating a different
interpretation about America and its citizens, which might not be accurate. The photographs of the
events that occurred in Abu Ghraib prison shows torture and abuse done to the prisoners by American
soldiers. The photos taken show how the military took pride in abusing and torturing victims. The act
of torturing prisoners gave the military a sense of achievement a memorable event that needed to be
recorded. Susan Sontag observed that, the perpetrators posing, gloating, over their helpless

There are many different definitions of management. The classical authors considered the
management is a role that aims to achieve effective operation, make regulations, provide directions

management as a communication job in order to finish the work (Williams, 2010). Daft (2011) adds

Types Of Strategies For Foreign Locations Essay
There are two types of strategies for foreign locations, a centralized location from which a facility can
serve the world market and a decentralized location where facilities are set up in various regional or
national locations close to major markets. A centralized location is chosen when there is a substantial
difference among various countries in manufacturing costs due to each country s costs, political
economy, and culture. It s preferred when trade barriers are low, exchange rates are expected to remain
stable, the product s value to weight ratio is high, and the product serves universal needs. If the
production technology used by the firm has high fixed costs and high minimum efficient scale relative
to global demand they can benefit from a centralized location. Centralizing is also favored when
externalities arise from the concentration of like enterprises that favor certain locations. Conversely,
decentralization is preferred when trade barriers are high, location externalities aren t important,
exchange rates are volatile, the product s value to weight ratio is low, and the product does not serve
universal needs. If production technology has low fixed costs, low minimum efficient scale and
flexible manufacturing technology is not available, decentralizing is favored. Decentralization is also
chosen if manufacturing costs in various countries are not substantially impacted by differences in
factor costs, political economy, and culture. There are

Hinduism Research Paper Shiva is one of Hinduism s Supreme Beings, the god of the destroyer of evil
and the transformer within the Hindu Trimurti, that also includes Brahma and Vishnu. Shiva is known
as the Lord who is half woman, thus implying Shiva is androgynous for there is a masculine Shiva and
a feminine Shiva that are together as one, known as ardhavari ishvara. Shiva as ardhavari ishvara is
one of many examples of androgyny of Hindu gods in the Vedic literature. From scholarly analysis,
androgyny of Hindu gods, with the focus of this paper on Shiva as ardhavari ishvara, creates a positive
aspect with the presence of non gender conformity of the divine within the Hindu faith system. This
also causes problems and confusion from the Western world perspective and within the Hindu
worshipping communities in the that this lack of gender conformity can lead to the mislabeling of the
identity of Hindu worshippers and the divine. This paper will strive to discuss the positive and
negative benefits of worshipping androgynous gods, especially in today s society where there are still
gender inequalities, misinterpretations and many varying definitions surrounding what constitutes
gender within social context or even religion. Most other religions require followers to refer to their
God with gendered terms, but this is an interesting and positive quality that the Hinduism faith does
not adhere to.

Ukuthwala Custom
Benign accommodation? Ukuthwala, forced marriage and the South African Children s Act
Lea Mwambene and Julia Sloth Nielsen(
Abstract
In this article, we evaluate the implications of the Children s Act 38 of 2005 for ukuthwala. Ukuthwala
is a practice whereby, preliminary to a customary marriage, a young man, by force, takes a girl to his
home. Questions arise relating to the impact of constitutional principles upon customary law and
practice. It is suggested that instead of a prohibitionist stance towards customs that seem to violate
human rights norms, a benign accommodation of aspects that promote the positive aspects of culture
be adopted. This approach leads to a conclusion that South African law should recognise those forms

The main aim of ukuthwala is to force the girl s family to enter into negotiations for the conclusion of
a customary marriage.[18] (Underlining supplied).
The procedure for ukuthwala is as follows: The intending bridegroom, with the help of the one or two
friends, will waylay the intended bride in the neighbourhood of her own home, quite often late in the
day.[19] They will then forcibly take her to the young man s home. Sometimes the girl is caught
unawares, but in many instances she is caught according to prior plan and agreement. In either case,
the girl will put up a show of resistance to suggest to onlookers that it is against her will, when in fact,
it is seldom so. As Bekker

Listening For A Recording Of An Opera
Listening to a recording of an opera is an altogether different beast, than seeing one in person. While
you can get a sense of the music and the style behind a piece from a recording, there is something
special about hearing it performed in person. Feeling the vibrations of the voices and orchestra,
observing the characters moving on stage, the variable highs and lows of every different performance;
all combine to form an experience vastly more complex and nuanced than simply listening to a
recording. The opera I saw was Verdi s Falstaff, as performed by the UW Madison University Opera,
on Sunday, November 13th. Falstaff is the last opera Verdi wrote and his interpretation of a
Shakespearean comedy. Originally set in the 1400s, this production of Falstaff was reimagined by
director David Ronis and dramaturg Steffen Silvis in 1930s Hollywood. It is the goal of this recreation
to make the opera more relatable and interesting for a more modern audience. This review will cover
how the performance did and did not meet my expectations, along with how resetting of the opera in
the 1930s worked in my eyes.
Falstaff was performed in the UW Music Hall, A small, unremarkable building near the base of
Bascom Hill that I have passed hundreds of times but never payed much attention to. When I use to
think of an opera theater, the picture I had in mind was a giant, gilded arena for the high end of
society. Even after learning the truth of early opera theatres build, the image persists.

Functionalism In Sociological Discipline
Sociological theories are the core and underlying strength of sociological discipline (Hammond,
Thompson and Hickey, 2004).Theories are concepts and ideas that have been tested and combined to
give a set of ideas and explanations for people s thoughts and behaviours. Functionalism is one of the
oldest and most established theories in sociology. Functionalism is a top down theory. Individuals are
born into society and become the product of all the social influences around them , these are the
institutions such as the criminal justice system, education, family and religion (Trueman, 2015).
Postmodernism is a sociological theory that was founded in the late 20th century founded by
Baudrillard and Lyotard (Locher, 2015). Functionalists and postmodernists have contrasting opinions

Recently, I discovered a new way to make a few cents per day. It doesn t involve a savings account, or
some form of investment such as a 401k. Instead, all it takes is an hour long stroll throughout the

means of literally collecting money from the ground. And, there s plenty to be found, if you know
where to look. Most often, I find pennies. Sometimes, I ll only find one. Other times, I will hit a
jackpot. What is certain is that there s something there every time I take my walk. And surprisingly,
one can make a small fortune. To date, I found about five dollars worth of coins. It may not sound
much, but consider this: at home I have a change jar where I place all the coins I acquired after
making a purchase. Once this jar fills up I go to my bank and convert those coins into a check and
deposit into my savings. Often, it takes me a year to collect over $100 worth of coins. The coins I
collect off the campus and street speed up that process. It s possible now to turn the coins in within six

The Pardoner s Prologue Sparknotes
Does the way the story describes the Pardoner makes it seem as if he is a wholly vicious man? I
believe it does, from the start you can easily notice he is a very selfish person, yet he is supposed to be
a pastor and someone who tries to benefit the people of the church. Instead of fulfilling the role God
has put him in he would rather preach for his own benefits and bring sin upon the church. In The
Pardoner s Prologue, the story begins by explaining that the Pardoner is a man who preaches and tries
to sell his community salvation. He speaks on cupidity majority of the time which is saying that greed
is the root of evil. This is the first example of why he is a cruel man. He is preaching lies to his people
to make them feel bad and tricking them into giving money to the church, telling people not to be
greedy yet he is being greedy himself. Later on, he tells us that he preaches only to gain money, he
doesn t preach to try and bring the congregation salvation or freedom from their sins. He even gets to
the point where he thinks his sermons are intended to be evil, to offend God and the community.
Anyone who disagrees with what the Pardoner says is believe to be wrong and influenced by evil
intent. The reason the Pardoner does ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It goes on to say that the Pardoner s tongue will be a dagger to the people who hear his message, he

person, he is basically described as a snake and when people think of snakes it s not a positive picture.
A snake is something that is dangerous and scary, not happy and glorious. The Pardoner is viciously
coming for the pockets of the congregation and if anyone interferes, there will be problems. There is

The Arrival Of Islam And Islam
The arrival of Islam brought many changes to Arabian life and society as it then existed. One of these
changes was among the treatment of women and their place in society. Before the coming of Islam in
the 7th century, women were thought to be inferior servants to men. The arrival of Islam throughout
Arabia opened many opportunities for women that allowed them more rights and more influence on
the basis of equality.
The arrival of Islam is what was crucial for women to be seen as human beings. Women were thought
to have the same capabilities as men and seen to have the same chance as men at a fulfilling religious
life. Islam confirmed her capacity to carry out Allah s commands, her responsibilities and observation
of the commands that lead to heaven. Islam considered the woman as a worthy human being, with a
share in humanity equal to that of the man. Men and women also possessed equality within the context
of religious duties required by Islam. Both genders shared the same responsibilities. The woman is
also required to perform religious ordinances and forms of worship the way the man is. Praying,
fasting, Zakat (the alms sanctifying tax), pilgrimage and all the other fundamental practices in Islam
are required of Muslims in their capacity, both men and women, as responsible humans. While women
were given many responsibilities to carry out, having equal humanity also gave them more rights than
they had before.

strong and keep fight for equality. Consequently, we feel pride for her strength and respect for her
actions. The metaphors of oil wells , gold mines and diamonds represent how valuable Angelou
distinguishes herself to be and is proud of herself, she is worth just as much as everyone else hence
she deserves respect and love alike others. We feel respect for her great accomplishments. The nature
of winning is the pride won in one s self and also the respect by societies which are the best prizes.
The poem s perspective of winning explored in this poem is not a moment of glory as that is little
compared to a lifetime admirable

Obergefell Vs Hodges
As a general rule, constitutional law examination differs depending on the nature of the right that is
being asserted in a case. In the Constitution people have various rights such as freedom of speech,
freedom of religion, etc. Other rights in the Constitution are not presented in the Constitution, but they
are arguably stated within its context. In this paper I will agree that the Supreme Court case Obergefell
v. Hodges was right in affirming the equal rights of same sex couples based on the due process clause
of the fourteenth amendment. The Court s ruling in this case has an effect on the legal rights of
children of same sex couples, the rights of people who identify as gay, and the states sovereign right to
enact legislation that defines ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hodges concluded that the right to marry is a fundamental right inherent in the liberty of a person
protected by the Constitution. The Court has long afforded the right to marry constitutional protection.
But the standard test for identifying a fundamental right under the Due Process Clause is that the right
must be deeply rooted in this Nation s history and tradition (Washington Post) . However, the majority
opinion went further to find that the liberties implied within the Fourteenth Amendment Due Process
Clause have stretched to certain personal choices central to a person s dignity and autonomy, including
their intimate choices that define personal identity and beliefs (Washington Post) . Using this idea, the
majority opinion concluded that the liberty interest to marry extends to same sex couples. The ruling
has helped gay rights advocates fight more than a hundred and fifteen pieces of legislation that were
introduced in state legislatures that were targeting gay people. The majority opinion agreed that the
Constitution contemplates that democracy is the appropriate process for change. In addition to
clearing the way for same sex marriage nationwide, Friday s decision may help end discrimination
against gays and lesbians in other matters, such as adoption and custody rights, legal experts say
(LATimes) . Gay couples can now have no problem matters when wanting to start a family because of
the great decision made by the Supreme Court. Justice Kennedy s majority opinion in the United
States v. Windsor, which struck down a federal law denying benefits to married same sex couples, and
exactly twelve years after his majority opinion in Lawrence v. Texas, which struck down laws making
gay sex a crime. In all his decisions Justice Kennedy embraced a vision of a living Constitution, one
that evolves with societal changes (NYTimes) . Kennedy makes a great point that the generations
before wrote and ratified the Bill

Public Mass Shootings And Suicide Bombings
On the evening of Friday, 13 November 2015, a massacre including of public mass shootings and
suicide bombings occurred in the capital of France, Paris. The attackers killed 130 people and
wounded 368 serious injuries. Just 10 months previous, on January 7, 2015 two terrorists attacked
Charlie Hebdo, an office of a Parisian satirical magazine. They killed eleven and wounded eleven
people. During the attacks in Paris, no one victim was armed. They didn t have any chance to defense
for themselves. When police arrived, it was too late to save the innocents. The world today is full of
dangerous with terrorism, criminals, mass shootings, and so forth. We re not safe from anything.
Today, I am going to tell you about the right to carry concealed gun and why we need it. I have
researched both sides of this controversy, and the need to carry concealed gun is the stronger
argument. According to Deborah Homsher, author of Women Guns: Politics and the Culture of
Firearms in America, when states passed the laws which give adults the right to carry concealed guns
if they don t have a criminal record or mental illness, the number of multiple victim shootings
declined by 84 percent (265). Furthermore, a 2015 report from the Crime Prevention Research found
that the number of concealed guns permits has soared, growing from 4.6 million in 2007 to over 12.8
million in 2014 (6). First, I m going to tell you effective of carry concealed gun. Second, I ll tell you

The Definition Of Blind By Texas State University
Diversity is usually portrayed as the acceptance of many different races and geographical cultures. It is
not as common to hear the lack of diversity towards the blind community but it exists. The attendance
of Texas State University has opened up the doors to one of the most diverse places I have had the
chance to experience first hand. Although Texas State has become somewhat of a safe haven, that does
not displace the fact that there is stereotyping everywhere against the blind.
According to the Oxford Dictionary, the definition of blind is unable to see; sightless (Definition of
Blind in English, 2015). However, I do not like to be put in such a box. I define blindness as merely a
heightening of other senses. What do you think of when you hear the word sight? More than likely
you think of shapes, colors, and objects. My idea of sight consists of many senses; smell, touch,
sounds, those are the things that I see with. How about the word blind; what do you think of then? The
most common relation to the word blind is disabled; however, we are a very abled people. Even
though I carry a cane among my person I get through my daily life just as any other able bodied
human being (Question 1).
My name is Melony Fey Harper and I am blind. I am just another girl on just another campus getting
through just another day. There are a few differences, however, in the structure of a typical person s
day and my own. I wake up, brush my teeth, put on my makeup, and head downstairs

According to the Quantitative Distribution and Characteristics of Neuston Plastic in the North Pacific
Ocean (1985), the usual way to find the plastic objects are brought by ships such as lines, nets, and
floats. In addition, it is possibly any kind of plastic package or object would be discarded and lost to
the sea. Plastic objects would suffer natural division to turn into small fragments. Moreover, the
plastics density, or trapped gas will lead to plastic fragments float on the ocean and cannot sink.
2.2 The Great Pacific Garbage Patch characteristic The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is the massive
and immovable region of the North Pacific Ocean bound by the North Pacific Gyre. The gyre s
rotational pattern attracts waste debris across the North Pacific Ocean. Moreover, when the waste
debris imprisons in the currents, wind driven surface currents move floating fragments slowly toward
the center, and trapping them in the section. The garbage patch s size is still unknown because large
and visible waste items are uncommon to see and lots of small fragments are suspended at or just
below the surface that they are difficult to measure by aircraft and satellite. Sea Studio Foundation
reports that the garbage patch s is roughly twice the size of Texas, and containing approximately 3.5
million tons of

  • 2. The Impact Of Paul Gustave Dore s 1869 Oil On Canvas,... Around two months ago, I posted an image of Paul Gustave Dore s 1869 oil on canvas, Andromeda, to a large Internet forum called Reddit. If you re unfamiliar with the website Reddit , it is simply a site that is heavily run by the contribution of users, providing open discussions about specific ideas and news. To my amazement, the post made it to the front page, receiving much attention, but along with it came other ethical discussions that related to art as a general consensus and how the idea of beauty has influenced current viewers with their expectations for museums and galleries. With comments on my post such as Actual art on [Reddit!?] and Art isn t art unless it s old it was at this point that I became more aware of Thomas Horsfall s view of, what he put as, arts bitterest enemies. To elaborate further, Horsfall suggested in his paper, Art in Large Towns... dated 1882, historical and modern art visually entices the average viewer and their knowledge about its context, but people who only recognise a piece for its visual aesthetics have poor knowledge of the true approach to art. So, do we, the viewers go to museums and galleries in hope of finding beautiful imagery? Are we, as suggested by Horsfall, positively influenced on our ideas of beauty and taste by our viewings? Well, firstly... What is beauty? By Oxford dictionary s definition, beauty is defined by the combination of qualities, such as shape, colour, or form, that pleases the aesthetic ... • 3. Costco Is An American Wholesale Corporation Costco is an American wholesale corporation that operates based on the membership warehouse club, while Target is a retailer corporation that specializes in discount merchandise. Even though both Costco and Target have different target operation, they are the top two largest companies in the retailer industry in the United States. In order to analyze and compare the financial health of these two company, it is important to recognize these three key terms: liquidity, solvency, and profitability. Liquidity is a financial term used to determine the ability of a company to pay off its short term debts, which will be due within the next year or in an operating cycle. In another word, liquidity is a very important indicator to evaluate a company s financial health. Liquidity ratio shows a comparison between the most liquid assets and short term obligations of a company. A higher liquidity expresses that the company has not only a better ability to pay off its short term debts but also a greater amount of cash for an unexpected needs. In another word, when a company has a low liquidity, the company may face a risk to pay its short term debt and struggle to fund its long term operation. The current ratio is one of the most common and useful terms used to measure the liquidity of a company. It suggests the capability of a company to pay back its liabilities with its assets. The current ratio is computed by dividing current assets by current liabilities. According to a financial ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Mass Incarceration And Overcrowded Jails Research Questions Research Question No. 1 Did Three Strikes You re Out contribute to the problem of mass incarceration and overcrowded jails and prisons? The slogan ?Three Strikes You re Out? was for a toughening stand on crime endorsed by the federal government in the 1980 s. Historically speaking, this rhetoric stood as the ideology behind the War on Drugs as a logical and necessary response to a rise in drug crime and the emergence of crack cocaine in inner city communities (Alexander, 2011). The problem to be identified for the purposes of this report was the lack of an actual rise on crime. Nonetheless, the results were an increase in drug convictions. Those ... Below I have provided a few of the top options that the organization can easily put in place for the use of recruiting and selection new senior level staff. For organizations that do not have the time or the resources to find suitable candidates, they hire headhunters and recruiting companies to do the searching for them. These headhunters and recruiters hunt down the best individuals in their particular fields, having thoroughly researched their complete background, including their experience and accomplishments, and basically sell these individuals to the appropriate organization. (Sutton, 2009) These companies also certify the candidates they recommend, providing a money back guarantee if an organization is not completely satisfied after a specific period of time. 3. Gamification. Gamification is the use of gaming principles and design in non gaming situations and identifies potential employees by posing virtual challenges that require the skills necessary for a given job. Gamification is effective because it can test a skill set, associate the company with something people enjoy and produce a virtual feel for the culture of a particular workplace. Selection Methods Selecting suitable candidates for senior level positions of the organization is also an essential undertaking. There are several considerations an organization must take into an account about a candidate before hiring them. 1. Credentials Assessment. • 6. Comparing Of Mice And Men And What s Eating Gilbert Grape What s Eating Gilbert Grape Dir. Lasse Hallstrom and Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck are two very similar pieces of storytelling about caring for the misfortunate. In Of Mice and Men George cares for his mentally challenged friend Lennie, and in, What s Eating Gilbert Grape, Gilbert takes care of his mentally disabled brother Arnie. Both George and Gilbert care more for the well being and defence of their loved one, than they do for their own well being in most cases. In the end of What s Eating Gilbert Grape, Gilbert s mother dies; in a dramatic and tangible gesture to rid himself of his past, Gilbert burns their house down. George is always saying how he wants him and Lennie to live on a farm but is always doubting if Lennie can stay on track, and he is always wondering if Lennie is gonna mess up their chances. Comparably Gilbert s decision to burn down his house is his way of proclaiming his starting over, and symbolically saying that nothing good ever came of that house and that nothing ever would. Gilbert is talking to Becky and is saying how much he hates living in his house and that he hates how lazy and fat his mom is. This is more obvious for Gilbert because throughout the whole movie he is completely selfless and only cares about taking care of his family. Both of their decisions were very important to show that they were finally taking control of their lives, and that they decided to finally do something for themselves. Unfortunately in order to do this both characters looked to destructive and violent ways of freeing themselves. Perhaps these burdens were so great that they had to take destructive measures to alleviate themselves from them, or perhaps they simply never learned another away and had to take extreme measure to enact any change in their ... • 9. Chomsky s Theory Of Human Language In the 1960s, Empiricism and Behaviorism reigned, yet these views are now commonly mostly considered absurd due to Chomsky. Noam Chomsky, a prominent cognitive linguist and a great contributor to analytical philosophy, is in awe of the concept of human language. The properties of language enable humans to combine individual concepts together in indefinitely many ways, making the range of human thought virtually unlimited. Chomsky is fascinated that language enables humans to say virtually anything and cooperate to make plans with each other. The faculty of language is arguably what makes human beings cognitively distinct from other creatures. Through narrowing the scope of human language, adopting a rationalistic influence, proposing his Cognitive Development Theory, and including essentialist aspects in his philosophy, Chomsky gives linguistics a respectable place in the greater sphere of epistemology. Noam Chomsky creates a narrow scope of linguistics, reducing the focus of its study. Chomsky believes studying the meaning, reference, and use of language should be excluded from the field of linguistics. He insists the study must be focused toward the capacity of humans to acquire, to utilize, and invent languages as well as the abstract structural patterns found in a particular language under some idealization . Chomsky, apart from narrowing the scope, narrows the faculty of language itself. Previously, the focus was centered on the diversity of linguistic performance and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Leadership Practice Of A Nursing Student As a nursing student, I have had great success forming therapeutic relationships with my clients and have received positive feedback from clinical instructors about my patient communication. However, I experience uncertainty when interacting with peers or colleagues. My lack of confidence translates into difficulty forming effective professional relationships. This assessment is reflected in my Clinical Leadership Survey as a deficit in the leadership practice of Encouraging the Heart. This practice includes behaviors such as recognizing contributions, celebrating accomplishments, and providing feedback (Patrick, Laschinger, Finegan, and Wong, 2011). The results of my baseline survey support the theory that my weakness is in interprofessional communication. Alternatively however, I recorded equal strength of fourteen out of fifteen in the other four leadership practices. Each of these four practices incorporates an element of Emotional Intelligence and reflective practice. Based on my clinical experiences and feedback from instructors, I agree with these results and can identify that interprofessional communication is the skill I must develop to become an effective leader. This is an excellent way to show that as a human race we are constantly looking for a mode of perfection but that mode is never there because we can never find it. What we can do is to get as close as possible to the ideal situation. This ideal situation should mean that there is some form of Pareto efficiency in the system and most people stand to benefit. If the value system allows for the existence of some classes to gain more than others this will create inequality. In such a case the government will always try to change policies to make the shift. • 14. Analysis Of Daniel Kahneman s The Surety Of Fools Voltaire once said, Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is an absurd one. We live in a world that is constantly changing and does not grant the certainty that people desire. But, people want the stability of knowing what is going to happen; this is why certainty is absurd. In his essay The Surety of Fools, Daniel Kahneman provides examples of people using a phenomenon he calls the illusion of validity. These people strongly believe their actions cause a specific outcome, when in reality there is statistical evidence that shows their actions have no direct correlation with the outcome. While Kahneman argues the illusion of validity comes partially from people s tendency to make quick decisions without fully conveying the causes, it really stems from people s fear of uncertainty from having a lack of knowledge. Other fields of academia, such as science and economics, have admitted that uncertainty grounds their thinking processes. Kahneman is inaccurate in neglecting to mention that it is the fear of uncertainty that really causes the illusion of validity. Kahneman argues that the illusion of validity comes from fast thinking because it is prone to doubt. Meaning, people naturally think quickly because they need a reason and so they do not have time to question their explanation. However, Kahneman neglects to mention that fast thinking roots itself in the fear of uncertainty. Kahneman begins his essay by describing his experience in evaluating ... • 15. Henry David Thoreau, And Frederick Douglass Americas Reformation Many early writers and authors were able to focus on reform itself or the idea of reforming America. In some cases, these writers focused on advocating for strong social or political reforms. In other cases, these writers argued for a reform in their own personal perspective. Frederick Douglass, Henry David Thoreau, and Frances Ellen Watkins Harper all had specific reforms that they each pushed for individually through their writings. While these three authors had different reasons for pushing for reformation, they all seem to blend into one overall goal for America and all that is known to be American. Frederick Douglass was an early American writer that pushed heavily for personal reform throughout his text, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. In his writing, he goes through his personal life and all the hardships that he was confronted with. In the very first chapter of his writing he states, I never saw my mother, to know her as such, more than four or five times in my life; and each of these times was very short in duration, and at night (Douglass 1182). This explains that Douglass was taken away from his mother at a very young age, as most slaves in this time were. • 16. Analysis Of The Book Dostoevsky Xiaolu Wu In the beginning of Five Articles, Dostoevsky talks about how Russia remains an enigma to the western world, and how the European view of Russia is narrow, stereotypical, superficial and largely imaginary. Dostoevsky claims that for Europeans, Russians seem to be barbarians and Europeans at the same time and their identities remain ambiguous for the Europeans, sometimes even for themselves. But generally, the idea of Russians for Europeans is that Russians are inferior to other Europeans, are unfaltering in battles, but are not intelligent and mostly uneducated. But this idea comes from a detached way of observation even for those Europeans who spend time in Russia studying this country. According to Dostoevsky, the Germans come to Russia and judge the Russians by the standard of a perfect German without realizing that Russians have completely distinct characters. Therefore the Germans assume an arrogant attitude towards the Russians. While the Frenchmen who go to Russia bring their stereotypical view of Russia along with them and see everything through the lens of their preformed stereotypes, like how Russian culture is replaced by the invading new western culture. However, Dostoevsky refutes this Frenchmen s idea by claiming that the Russians have already taken the fruit of western civilization and have gone beyond it. Also, all six of us know all of our friends on Facebook in some sort of way. We may have gone to school together, had a college class together, work together, or just met through mutual friends, but because we know these people I do not think we over share because we do not talk about every detail of our lives, especially people we don t know unlike some people. All he had was a small dagger and a broken spear shaft to stay alive in an unforgiving land filled with angry Argonaut conspirators. • 21. Symbolism Lord Of The Flies William Golding s Lord of the Flies has many significant symbols that represent the emotions and thoughts of the castaways in the novel. The meaning of the symbols change along with how the characters think and act, starting as something innocent and turning dark and sinister. Three important symbols within the novel are: the conch shell, the signal fire and the beast. The meaning of these symbols are significantly impacted by the growth of savagery and loss of civilization on the island, and the change in symbolism allows the reader to better understand the changes among the boys throughout the novel. Near the beginning of the novel, readers are introduced to the conch shell. The shell was found accidentally, but was seen as very valuable from the start. Most obscurely, yet most powerfully, there was the conch. The being that had blown that...was set apart (chapter 1, page 21). It was used to congregate the castaways to meetings and designate who could speak; in short, the conch represented order, civility, and authority among the characters. As the novel progresses, this symbol of civilization loses its power. A majority of the castaways embrace savagery and turn away from order, there are a few characters however, who remain faithful to the conch and its meaning. The meaning changes from just a sign of order to a reminder of civilization and a way for characters to hold on to reality. For example, Ralph, after admitting that he had joined in the ... This essay will examine the underlying issues of identity and how, beginning with the Truman Doctrine, a distinct articulation of the national interest was evinced that has defined America s role in the world. In doing so, focus will be given to the development of alliance policy, containment and its effect on transforming the US posture in the post Cold War international order. Firstly, it is pertinent to reconsider the traditional narratives that underpin American identity. Inherent in this is Manifest Destiny, which asserts that Anglo Saxon American s are God s chosen people, with a superior culture and who are pre ordained to spread civilisation to inferior peoples (Hollander 2009, 169). This tradition offers instructive themes for the formulation of American exceptionalism and its manifestation into a missionary foreign policy (Hoffmann 1968, 369). It also raises to the forefront the Manichean character of American policy, its solipsism and tendency to justify geopolitical objectives in moralistic terms (Lepgold 1995, 372). Thus, US foreign policy is a discourse for reproducing American identity, containing threats to its core principles and legitimating ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

All of these projects were based on the Catholic Church s proclamation human life is sacred and the dignity of the human person is the foundation of society. ( ) By establishing Missionaries of Charity in 1948, which served society s poor and marginalized, Mother Teresa influenced world leaders by living the social teachings of the Catholic Church. Mother Teresa grew up in a very loving family that was committed to their Catholic faith. Her mother always told her children that they should never eat a bite of food without sharing it with another. Mother Teresa recalls that her mother often invited the poor of the their town to come and dine with her family. Her mother s commitment to the needy was deep rooted. She didn t waver from this commitment even after her husband died leaving her with three young children including Teresa, who was only eight years old. A Long Time Citizens For a long time citizens have always respected the soldiers who stand to protect the nation, but none care about how they do it or the psychological traumas they go through. After the Iraq War several disturbing photos were released to the public. People who were distraught like Susan Sontag spoke up and demanded an explanation for the events that took place in Abu Ghraib prison. Many have questioned why no punishment was given to the perpetrators, but were disappointed when no direct answer was given. Sontag tries to make a connection between the photos the military and their leaders, and what they portray about the American society in her piece Regarding The Torture Of Others. She displays acts of the military and their leaders showing justification in their act of torture to enemies outside the United States. The act of generalizing a nation by an event in its history is not effective and weakens her argument. This even has shaken the nation s image to the world, creating a different interpretation about America and its citizens, which might not be accurate. Types Of Strategies For Foreign Locations Essay There are two types of strategies for foreign locations, a centralized location from which a facility can serve the world market and a decentralized location where facilities are set up in various regional or national locations close to major markets. A centralized location is chosen when there is a substantial difference among various countries in manufacturing costs due to each country s costs, political economy, and culture. It s preferred when trade barriers are low, exchange rates are expected to remain stable, the product s value to weight ratio is high, and the product serves universal needs. If the production technology used by the firm has high fixed costs and high minimum efficient scale relative to global demand they can benefit from a centralized location. Centralizing is also favored when externalities arise from the concentration of like enterprises that favor certain locations. Conversely, decentralization is preferred when trade barriers are high, location externalities aren t important, exchange rates are volatile, the product s value to weight ratio is low, and the product does not serve universal needs. Shiva is known as the Lord who is half woman, thus implying Shiva is androgynous for there is a masculine Shiva and a feminine Shiva that are together as one, known as ardhavari ishvara. Shiva as ardhavari ishvara is one of many examples of androgyny of Hindu gods in the Vedic literature. From scholarly analysis, androgyny of Hindu gods, with the focus of this paper on Shiva as ardhavari ishvara, creates a positive aspect with the presence of non gender conformity of the divine within the Hindu faith system. This also causes problems and confusion from the Western world perspective and within the Hindu worshipping communities in the that this lack of gender conformity can lead to the mislabeling of the identity of Hindu worshippers and the divine. This paper will strive to discuss the positive and negative benefits of worshipping androgynous gods, especially in today s society where there are still gender inequalities, misinterpretations and many varying definitions surrounding what constitutes gender within social context or even religion. Instead of fulfilling the role God has put him in he would rather preach for his own benefits and bring sin upon the church. In The Pardoner s Prologue, the story begins by explaining that the Pardoner is a man who preaches and tries to sell his community salvation. He speaks on cupidity majority of the time which is saying that greed is the root of evil. This is the first example of why he is a cruel man. He is preaching lies to his people to make them feel bad and tricking them into giving money to the church, telling people not to be greedy yet he is being greedy himself. One of these changes was among the treatment of women and their place in society. Before the coming of Islam in the 7th century, women were thought to be inferior servants to men. The arrival of Islam throughout Arabia opened many opportunities for women that allowed them more rights and more influence on the basis of equality. The arrival of Islam is what was crucial for women to be seen as human beings. Women were thought to have the same capabilities as men and seen to have the same chance as men at a fulfilling religious life. Islam confirmed her capacity to carry out Allah s commands, her responsibilities and observation of the commands that lead to heaven. Islam considered the woman as a worthy human being, with a share in humanity equal to that of the man. Men and women also possessed equality within the context of religious duties required by Islam. Both genders shared the same responsibilities. The woman is also required to perform religious ordinances and forms of worship the way the man is. Praying, fasting, Zakat (the alms sanctifying tax), pilgrimage and all the other fundamental practices in Islam are required of Muslims in their capacity, both men and women, as responsible humans. The Court s ruling in this case has an effect on the legal rights of children of same sex couples, the rights of people who identify as gay, and the states sovereign right to enact legislation that defines ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hodges concluded that the right to marry is a fundamental right inherent in the liberty of a person protected by the Constitution. The Court has long afforded the right to marry constitutional protection. But the standard test for identifying a fundamental right under the Due Process Clause is that the right must be deeply rooted in this Nation s history and tradition (Washington Post) . However, the majority opinion went further to find that the liberties implied within the Fourteenth Amendment Due Process Clause have stretched to certain personal choices central to a person s dignity and autonomy, including their intimate choices that define personal identity and beliefs (Washington Post) . Using this idea, the majority opinion concluded that the liberty interest to marry extends to same sex couples. The ruling has helped gay rights advocates fight more than a hundred and fifteen pieces of legislation that were introduced in state legislatures that were targeting gay people. The majority opinion agreed that the Constitution contemplates that democracy is the appropriate process for change. In addition to clearing the way for same sex marriage nationwide, Friday s decision may help end discrimination against gays and lesbians in other matters, such as adoption and custody rights, legal experts say (LATimes) . Gay couples can now have no problem matters when wanting to start a family because of the great decision made by the Supreme Court. Justice Kennedy s majority opinion in the United States v. Windsor, which struck down a federal law denying benefits to married same sex couples, and exactly twelve years after his majority opinion in Lawrence v. Texas, which struck down laws making gay sex a crime. In all his decisions Justice Kennedy embraced a vision of a living Constitution, one that evolves with societal changes (NYTimes) . • 46. The Definition Of Blind By Texas State University Diversity is usually portrayed as the acceptance of many different races and geographical cultures. It is not as common to hear the lack of diversity towards the blind community but it exists. The attendance of Texas State University has opened up the doors to one of the most diverse places I have had the chance to experience first hand. Although Texas State has become somewhat of a safe haven, that does not displace the fact that there is stereotyping everywhere against the blind. According to the Oxford Dictionary, the definition of blind is unable to see; sightless (Definition of Blind in English, 2015). However, I do not like to be put in such a box. I define blindness as merely a heightening of other senses. What do you think of when you hear the word sight? More than likely you think of shapes, colors, and objects. My idea of sight consists of many senses; smell, touch, sounds, those are the things that I see with. How about the word blind; what do you think of then? The most common relation to the word blind is disabled; however, we are a very abled people. Even though I carry a cane among my person I get through my daily life just as any other able bodied human being (Question 1). My name is Melony Fey Harper and I am blind. I am just another girl on just another campus getting through just another day. There are a few differences, however, in the structure of a typical person s day and my own. I wake up, brush my teeth, put on my makeup, and head downstairs ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

According to the Quantitative Distribution and Characteristics of Neuston Plastic in the North Pacific Ocean (1985), the usual way to find the plastic objects are brought by ships such as lines, nets, and floats. In addition, it is possibly any kind of plastic package or object would be discarded and lost to the sea. Plastic objects would suffer natural division to turn into small fragments. Moreover, the plastics density, or trapped gas will lead to plastic fragments float on the ocean and cannot sink. 2.2 The Great Pacific Garbage Patch characteristic The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is the massive and immovable region of the North Pacific Ocean bound by the North Pacific Gyre. The gyre s rotational pattern attracts waste debris across the North Pacific Ocean. Moreover, when the waste debris imprisons in the currents, wind driven surface currents move floating fragments slowly toward the center, and trapping them in the section. The garbage patch s size is still unknown because large and visible waste items are uncommon to see and lots of small fragments are suspended at or just below the surface that they are difficult to measure by aircraft and satellite. Sea Studio Foundation reports that the garbage patch s is roughly twice the size of Texas, and containing approximately 3.5 million tons of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
