2. WHAT IS A
DIGITAL SIGNATURE
CERTIFICATE (DSC)
A cryptographic key that authenticates the identity
of the sender in digital transactions
Ensures data integrity and security
A Digital Signature Certificate represents a secure
digital credential issued by certifying authorities to
verify and authenticate the identity of the certificate
holder. Digital Signatures employ public key encryption
techniques to generate these unique signatures.
A digital signature certificate (DSC) includes details
such as the user's name, postal code, country, email
address, certificate issuance date, and the certifying
authority's name.

3. HOW DOES
DSC WORK
Digital signature solution providers adhere to a specific
protocol known as Public Key Infrastructure (PKI).
PKI involves using mathematical processes to generate
two long numbers: one public and one private key.
When a signer electronically signs a document, they utilise
their securely stored private key.
Through a mathematical process, data matching the
signed document is created, called a hash, and
subsequently encrypted to form the digital signature.
The digital signature also includes a timestamp indicating
when the document was signed.
Any alterations to the document after signing render the
digital signature invalid.
Digital signatures, much like handwritten signatures, are
distinct for each signer.
-Private Key: Held by the owner, used for signing
documents
- Public Key: Available to anyone, verifies the signature

4. TYPES OF DSC
WHAT ARE THE
Class 1
Class 2
Class 3
Used by both individuals and businesses. This certificate provides fundamental
assurance and is regarded as the lowest level of security. Basic email verification
is required.
Individuals and organisations, whether they are Indian or foreign, can avail of
this certificate. Identity and address verification is required. Anyways the
issuance of class 2 DSC in India has been stopped since, 2021.
This certificate is suitable for both individuals and organisations and is
renowned for its exceptionally high level of security. It finds primary application
in online trading and e-commerce, especially in scenarios that involve a
significant volume of sensitive data. Obtaining a Class 3 certificate is important
for individuals who wish to engage in online auctions and participate in e-
tendering processes.

7. VALIDITY & RENEWAL
DSC
The validity of a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) in
India is subject to certain conditions and regulations.
1. Certificate Expiry: DSCs have a predefined validity
period, typically one year to three years. The exact
validity duration is determined at the time of issuance
by the Certifying Authority (CA) and is specified in the
certificate.
2. Renewal: To continue using a DSC beyond its validity
period, it must be renewed. Renewal involves the
issuance of a new certificate with an extended validity
period. The renewal process may require re-verification
of the subscriber's identity.
