Describing Myself Essay
1. Describing Myself Essay
Crafting an essay about oneself, a "Describing Myself Essay," might seem like a straightforward
task, but in reality, it is a complex and challenging endeavor. The challenge lies not only in
presenting an accurate and compelling portrayal of oneself but also in striking a delicate balance
between self-confidence and humility. It requires introspection, self-awareness, and the ability to
articulate personal experiences, traits, and aspirations in a coherent and engaging manner.
The difficulty intensifies as one navigates the fine line between self-expression and the
expectations of the audience. Too much self-promotion may come across as boastful, while
excessive modesty might obscure the essence of the individual. It demands the writer to critically
evaluate their strengths and weaknesses, selecting the most pertinent details to create a well-
rounded image without appearing self-indulgent.
Moreover, the challenge extends to the creative aspect of storytelling. A well-crafted "Describing
Myself Essay" not only conveys information but also captivates the reader's attention. It requires
the use of vivid language, anecdotes, and a compelling narrative structure to make the essay
memorable and relatable.
Furthermore, the difficulty is compounded by the inherent subjectivity of self-perception. One
may grapple with the question of how accurately personal qualities and experiences are being
portrayed, as well as how they may be perceived by others. Striking this delicate balance can be
emotionally taxing, as individuals navigate their own complexities and vulnerabilities while
striving to present a positive and authentic image.
In conclusion, writing a "Describing Myself Essay" is a challenging task that demands a
harmonious blend of self-awareness, storytelling skills, and an understanding of audience
expectations. It is an exercise in introspection and communication, requiring the writer to
navigate the intricate nuances of self-perception. However, through careful consideration and
skillful expression, one can create a compelling narrative that not only captures the essence of
oneself but also resonates with the reader.

2. Skywalker Tragic Hero
As we progressed through this year of sophomore english, we encountered many
tragic heroes. Grendel, Victor Frankenstein, Beowulf and now Macbeth and Walter
White. A tragic hero is one who has heroic qualities but all goes to waste as the hero
experiences downfall, suffering or death. The tragic hero I am analysing is Anakin
Skywalker; more prominently known as Darth Vader. This is my choice because he
was born with the skills to become a jedimaster but with the temptations of Darth
Sidious, used his powers incorrectly and become the most well known villain in the
Star Wars universe.
When the first trilogy of Stars Wars films were released, Darth Vader was seen as

3. An Analysis Of The Adaptation Of Stephen King s
You ll Float Too....
(An analysis of the 2017 adaptation of Stephen King s It using Aristotle s Poetics)
When the word poetics is used, poetry and roses are often what come to mind.
However, poetics can be any form of entertainment. Aristotle is talking about drama
and plays specifically, and in today s world, he would be talking about movies.
Several movies are released in theaters every week. There is a variety of genres,
including drama, thriller, horror, comedy, and romance. Aristotle creates the basis for
all critiques and judgments of drama in his essay Poetics. Aristotle creates this idea of
a good drama that still can be applied to modern film today. After Aristotle s death, his
philosophy continued to be taught at the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These kids are indeed the protagonists of the storyline. They are extremely relatable
characters in both their fears and tribulations. In the beginning of the film, Georgie is
afraid of the dark, and must conquer his fear to retrieve some wax from the cellar.
Nothing was there when Georgie went into the cellar, but he thought there was
something there because his fear made his brain imagine that something was
hiding in the dark. The movie does not start off with jump scares and creepiness
like a majority of horror movies. Rebecca Lewis praises the movie when she writes,
Director Muschietti uses horror tropes such as the young boy afraid of the dark
empty cellar and the pouring autumnal rain to put you on the edge of your seat
before you ve even met Pennywise the Dancing Clown, (Lewis). By starting the film
off this way, Muschietti creates an environment that almost every person to watch the
film could relate to. Most people used to be afraid of the dark when they were young.
Georgie s fear of the dark enticed the audience, bringing them into the experience and
reminding them of their own fear of the dark. This is an extremely clever device used
by King and Muschietti to captivate the audience. Aristotle comments in Poetics that
the audience can relate to the protagonist through fear. Joe Sachs comments that, Fear
can obviously be an insidious thing that undermines life and poisons it with anxiety,
(Sachs).
4. Understanding Education And The School System
I think my biggest shift in understanding education and the school system is just
how political it is. I ve worked in other systems such as the criminal justice system
and I knew things were political but for some reason I just never thought of the
school system as being as political as it is. I guess I was living in some type of
fantasy world where I thought that what is best for students was the driving force.
However, from the Ted talk information as well as the Legislative presentations, I
see just how much politics is involved. For example, several of the Ted Talks had
proven ways, backed by data on how to make effective changes in schools. So I can t
help but wonder why haven t some of these solutions trickled down into other... Show

However, we are still getting the same results when it comes to student achievement.
First, it was Closing the Achievement Gap, then came No Child Left Behind, then
Common Core and now it s Read to Achieve. It appears that the powers to be are
more interested adopting a new initiative instead of adapting to something that works.
As Dr. Canada stated, certain students consistently show a decline in achievement
over the summer breaks , then why do we continue to operate on the calendar we do
instead of operating schools in a year round manner (Canada, 2013). Or instead of
funding another initiatives, fund more summer programs or reading camps for all
students so that they won t lose so much educational ground during the summers.
Although, these strategies have been proven time and time again to be overall
effective in dealing with students I wonder sometimes are these thing overlooked
because of their simplicity and ease of implementation. Dr. Canada was not the only
one with some relatively simple and easily implemented ideas which can bring about
effective change in our schools.
School administrator Linda Cliatt Wayman open my eyes to the power of just how
much the concept of perception can impact an environment. The phrase perception is
reality , which was coined by a political strategist, Lee Atwater comes to mine when I

5. Consumerism And Free Market Economy
In today s society, it is becoming increasingly impossible for one to be watching
television, reading a magazine, or watching a sporting event without being flooded
with the images of commercialism. Messages in our televisions and print sources that
encourages us to buy are created by people who uses their talent to speak to both our
conscious and subconscious desires. The products that we buy, the food that we
consume, the clothes and shoes that we wear, and our everyday lives are influenced
by commercialism. Proponents for commercialism can argue that commercialism as
essential in the enhancement of capitalismand free market economy. It can also lead
to innovation competition of companies in meeting the needs of consumers.
However, Commercialism can lead to an increase in wasteful consumption or
consumerism. It can also lead to the depletion of natural resources in trying to meet
the consumption needs of the people.
Although commercialism have it draw backs, it is not all bad; commercialism
promotes capitalism and free trade both of which are very essential in our
American Society. Only by producing and selling goods and services does
capitalism work. Commercialism allows for the free flow of information between
producers and consumers about good and services, and as a result, consumers are
having the ability to make preferences about their purchasing choices. It can lead to
more equal and a wider distribution of goods and services from which people can
choose from.

7. Literature Review Of Opioids
The next section is a Literature review of the history of opioids, Addiction of
opioids, and the description of emergency care.
Historical Overview of Opioids The term Opioid is derived from the opium poppy.
It is an annual herb that contains about eight capsules with different color flowers.
The seeds are cut out from the stem and used for different purposes. Descriptions
from the Egyptians shows the opium seeds to be used to prevent excessive crying
while the Greeks used it for a sleep inducing substance. (Khademi, 2015, p.870)
Opium is the starting material for an array of medications. It is synthesized and then
is an opioid used for mainly the treatment of pain in anesthesia, cancer, acute pain,
osteoarthritis, limb pain, sickle cell anemia, and more. (Khademi, 2015, p870)
Opioids came from an opium plant from seeds and poppies before there was even a
written history. There is record of the Sumerians cultivating it around 3400 B.C.
(Alam, 2015,63) They called it, hul gil meaning plant of joy. It is the oldest known
drug. (Heroin Helper) With the cultivation of opium beginning in Europe, it is
interesting that Spain, Greece, and Egypt are the ones thought to have the oldest
poppy fields. (Wright, 2012, 512) Hippocrates and Galen are the early physicians that
used its properties to treat internal bleeding and woman s diseases. Galen had a list of
treatments including headache, deafness, asthma, coughs, fever, tightness of breath,

A Splendid Little War A Splendid Little War was an alternative title to the Spanish
American War named by Ambassador John Hay to his good friend Theodore

but by dying of diseases such as Yellow Fever, Malaria and other diseases. Only
9,413 Spaniards were killed by wounds and combat and 53,540 were killed by many
diseases. In this Splendid Little War America was able to free Spain s overseas
empire which included Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. The United Stateswas
also hungry for foreign good that weren t available to them in the homeland. After
an easy victory over Spain, American was able to control islands in the seas such as
Cuba, The Philippines and Guam. After this war, Spain was no longer a world
power and the United States was on its way to the top. America was very eager to
go in this war because they noticed how countries in Europe were becoming
imperialists. America thought in order to become a world power, they had to do the
same. They saw the opportunity to do so with Cuba. Although Spain was controlling

9. Comparing Lord Of The Flies And Beowulf s Death
9/11, Sandy Hook, Orlando, Boston Marathon, Hurricane Katrina, and Iraq
/Afghanistan war; all these events revolve around death and destruction. When Time
magazine asked Americans to rank the most significant event in their lifetime those
were the events they choose. Death... the biggest impact and influence in people s life
and minds. We see deathtake place in Lordof the Flies and Beowulf. Both stories have
appalling and perplexing events that take place throughout the novel. Many of the
events that take place result in death. While these stories revolve around death, Piggy
and Simon s death, in Lord of the Flies, were much more influential to the other
characters, plot, and the overall theme than Beowulf s death.
Death can be influential to any story by the way it impacts a character. One
character in Beowulf who was affected by death was Wiglaf. Our glorious king! By
almighty God, I d rather burn myself than see Flames swirling around my lord
(Unknown 725 727) Wiglaf broke down emotionally at the sight of Beowulf s
death. This shows Wiglaf s loyalty to Beowulf, and how he truly cared about
Beowulf s well being. Just like Beowulf had Wiglaf, Simon and Piggy had Ralph
on their side. Ralph was emotionally distressed after Simon s death specifically
because of how it happened. Ralph was never able to fully let it go; that s one
reason why he breaks down in front of the soldier at the end of the novel.
After Piggy and the conch were destroyed, Ralph, with no hope left, was worried
he would be next and actually had to run away from the rest of the boys on the
island. The boys left on the island could care less about the fact that those two boys
were killed and that blood was on their hands. Those boys were even excited about
the possibility of killing Ralph. This happens to be a way more influential and
important fact to know about the characters in Lord of the Flies because they
started to enjoy death. The boys would chant and sing songs about slitting the pig s
throat as if it were a game. In contrast, Wiglaf was very distraught over the death of
his king. After Beowulf s death the soldiers set up a tower to overlook a creek and
they buried jewels in his honor. Typically, Beowulf was only treated one way
10. Dbq Bound Man
Tollund Man is a 2400 year old naturally mummified body that was discovered in
1950 in a danish bog. Tollund Man was most likely a low class slave from the Iron
Age, who was killed as a result of being hung by a rope noose, because he believed
in another god than his community, which suggested he was rebelling against his
own community. According to Source A, the Danish police report, Tollund Man wore
an iron neck ring, which was typically what slaves wore during the Iron Age.
Furthermore, Tollund Man was found with no clothes on, which indicates that he
might have been immensely poor. We could infer that the Tollund Man, therefore,
was most likely a slave due to the fact that he was found with no clothes on and with
an iron neck drawn tight
11. Analysis Of Ezra Pound s
Ezra Pound s (1885 1972) Homage to Sextus Propertius has stirred controversies
after its first publication in Harriet Monroe s Poetry magazine in March 1919. The
poem is consisted of twelve sections and it was based on Propertius, a great Latin
elegiac poet who lived during the first century. Pound s poem provides a new
interpretation of Propertius that differs from his predecessors. Pound finds a voice
to critique the corrupted politics of his time. The poem, However, has enraged the
Classicists for they viewed it as an utter mistranslation of Propertius. Such differing
views over the poem have been, for quite long, the source of contention in the
academic circles. This paper, therefore, discusses the views of the Classicists and...

The perception of the poem continued raveling to other classicists. L.P. Wilkinson, a
Cambridge classicist, harshly criticized the poem and he concluded that Homage to
Sextus Propertius purged of the perversities of Ezra Pound (viii). Similarly, Professor
Gilbert Highet wrote in Horizon magazine that Homage was an insult both to poetry
and to scholarship, and to common sense (viii). Highet accused Pound of bad taste
and a disgusting misinterpretation of Propertius. Later, Robert Graves, a classical
translator, attacked Pound s inaccuracies in the poem. In the Times Literary
Supplement, he published a comical short play called Dr. Syntax and Mr. Pound
mocking Pound s ignorance of Latin and the radical distortion he made and his claim
of producing a free verse translation of the poem. He concluded that Pound has no
respect for Propertius and that he should learn the moral principles in translation, a
reference to his article published in 1965. And finally, Robert Nicholas, a
Gregorian poet, who echoed Hale s review over Pound s mistranslation of
Propertius. In Pound s essay, Date Line, he identifies five different modes of literary
criticism and one of them is criticism by translation (Literary Essays 74). This type
12. The Influence Of The Mayan Calendar
Since the beginning, time has been an important factor in our everyday lives. For
example, the seasons, years and months were determined by the Ancient Calendars.
The Ancient Calendars used Celestial bodies like the Sun, Moon, Planets and Stars
to keep track of time. As the years go on the Calendar has been fixed to the Julian
Calendar and to the Gregorian Calendar which we use today.
The earliest calendar to keep track of the cycles of the celestial bodies was an
Ancient Calendar known as the Egyptian calendar that was based on the moon s
cycles and is thought to have been created in 4236 B.C.E. This is the way that
Ancient civilizations determined the seasons, months, and years. Approximately, five
thousand years ago the Sumerians in the Tigris Euphrates valley had a calendar that
divided the year into 30 day months, divided the day into 12 periods, and divided
these periods into 30 parts. Subsequently, the earliest Egyptian calendar was based on
the moon s cycles, but soon the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

way than we do today. The Mayans might have not specifically invented the calendar

coincidence considering Arnold betrayed the American Colonies during the American

history. However, before he sided with the enemy, Arnold was one of the greatest
generals in the Revolution. Many may say the British may have won the war without

Obviously, Arnold was dedicated to his army and the colonial states even though
he was injured with a bullet wound in his leg at the time (Aaseng 21). Arnold had
a bold plan to build the first navy on Lake Champlain to prevent the British from
splitting the colonies in two, giving the British control of not only the colonies, but
also all of North America (Aaseng 21). Arnold boldly decided to go over the head
of his commanding officer to bring in carpenters and sailors in order to build ships
(Aaseng 22). Later during the battle, the American forces soon realized they would be
defeated, but they continued to persevere in the seven hour battle. The British
expected to complete the defeat of the Americans the next morning, but at dawn the
British found all the American vessels gone (Aaseng 22). During the night, Arnold
slipped the American ships one by one fooling the clueless British fleet (Aaseng 22).
Although the British ended up catching up to the Americans and another battle was
fought, Arnold and his men escaped. Arnold s navy ended up in shambles, but this
selfless act slowed down the British advance which could have possibly saved the
American country (Aaseng 24). After being appointed to the rank of major general,
Arnold led the American army in the Battle of Saratoga. This battle lifted the morale

15. Yixing Teapots During The Late-Ming Dynasty
Shi s relationship with Xu s family represented an important phenomenon in the
development of Yixing teapots during the late Ming dynasty. Some scholar official
tea connoisseurs passionately invited Yixing potters to their household, in which
Yixing potters continuously making teapots under the patronage of scholar official
families, similar to the interaction between the Wu family of Yixing and their
servant Gong Chun. Art historians have illustrated the lives of some Ming
professional painters whose livelihood depended largely upon commissions from
their patrons. For example, painter Qiu Ying (1494 1552), known today as one of
the Four Great Masters of the Ming dynasty, had at least three patrons in whose
houses he lived and worked
16. Symbolism, And Tone In Anne Of Green Gables
In the novel Anne of Green Gables, by Lucy Maud Montgomery, Matthew and
Marilla Cuthbert were planning on adopting a young boy to help them with chores,
only to find a girl, Anne Shirley, waiting for them at the train station. They wanted to
send her back to the orphanage, but the longer she stayed with them at Green Gables,
the more they could not picture life without her. The three literary elements addressed
in this charming book are characterization, symbol, and tone. First, the author uses
characterization to exhibit the personality of each character. She had a good chance to
do so, for the said Gilbert Blythe was absorbed in stealthily pinning the long yellow
braid of Ruby Gillis, who sat in front of him, to the back of her seat (110). This is
characterization because it shows Gilbert loves to trick others, even if it hurts them.
This is important because this was one of Anne s first impressions of him and she
did not like that he acted this way. I can t go through the Haunted Wood, Marilla,
cried Anne desperately (103). This is characterization because it shows that Anne has
a large imagination and she... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Oh, Marilla, how can you be so cruel? sobbed Anne. What would you feel like if a
white thing did snatch me up and carry me off? (165). This is tone because Anne
has a dismal tone in her voice, showing that she is heartbroken. This is important
because tone helps the reader understand how a character is reacting to a certain
situation. Did anybody ever see such a temper! exclaimed the horrified Mrs.
Rachel (65). One can see by this that the tone of Mrs. Rachel s voice was surprised
and shocked because she didn t believe that such a temper could be within such a
young girl. In addition, she was startled that Anne snapped at her and was unclear of
what had just happened. Therefore, the author uses tone to show how a character is
feeling during a specific time or
17. The Theory Of Mind Mechanism ( Tomm )
Though many of us may not realize it, humans have a remarkable set of abilities
that allows us to understand, empathize with, and predict others thoughts and
feelings. In other words, the average person is able to put himself in another s
shoes. In our daily lives we tend to take this skill for granted. It is only when
something goes wrong that we realize how important it actually is. For autistic
individuals, this mindreading deficit is all too real. In fact, an inability to engage in
this type of understanding of other s mental states is often taken as the hallmark sign
of autism. Mindreading is defined as the ability to make sense of other people and to
coordinate our behavior with theirs (Bermudez, 354). Many cognitive scientists
believe the theory of mindmechanism (TOMM) is important to mindreading. These
scientists contend that autistic individuals suffer from an impairment to this theory
of mind module. However, others have argued that theory of mind, which is the
ability to form beliefs about the mental states of others , is not a modular ability, but
instead the result of the interaction of many different cognitive skills. In their paper
Generous or Parsimonious Cognitive Architecture? Cognitive Neuroscience and
Theory of Mind, Philip Gerrans and Valerie E. Stone take this view of theory of
mind. I will review this paper and its arguments, then address the response to Gerrans
and Stone made by Carl Hildebrand. Gerrans s and Stone s argument consists of
18. Essay on Response to Savage Inequalities by Jonathan Kozol
Response to Savage Inequalities by Jonathan Kozol In Savage Inequalities, Jonathan
Kozol describes the conditions of several of America s public schools. Kozol visited
schools in neighborhoods and found that there was a wide disparity in the conditions
between the schools in the poorest inner city communities and schools in the
wealthier suburban communities. How can there be such huge differences within the
public school system of a country, which claims to provide equal opportunity for all?
It becomes obvious to Kozol that many poor children begin their young lives with an

communities. Savage Inequalities provides strong evidence of the national... Show

December 8, 1953), which supposedly mandated the desegregation of schools in
America. Towns close enough to easily integrate face almost total segregation with
abysmal conditions in the Black and/or Latino schools and tremendously good
resources in the white schools.
Although the statistics are more than 10 years out of date, the reality of America
school segregation has not changed. The barely functional buildings, lack of up to
date text books (or in many cases any text books), overcrowded classes, non
existent lab and computer equipment, and low paid teachers create a situation of
despair that leads to a drop out rate of more than 50% in many districts. And even
those who graduate are often barely literate. Kozol draws the clear link between
these schools and the imprisonment of the oppressed nations who, after dropping out
of a dead end education, end up locked behind bars.
The overt racism of this system is exposed when districts with little money run out of
space for their kids and try to rent empty space from wealthier districts. Those that
agree require the kids to stay entirely segregated from the white student body,

Contrary to other cities that outsourced their systems to outside operators, Montreal
was to run the system itself. A system run and operated by the city could provide
greater coordination with the bus and subway system, which was perceived as an
important advantage. The program was also to be funded through membership fees:
opportunities for advertisement revenues (which are typically used to cover the
operating expenses of bike sharing systems) were estimated to be too limited in
Montreal to offer a viable option. The mandate for the bike sharing system was given
to the Montreal Parking Authority.
The Montreal Parking Authority was considered less bureaucratic than other city
departments, and it was believed that they were in a position to move the project
forward within a short timeframe. It also had the advantage of being knowledgeable
about the transit system.
It was Roger Plamondon, President and CEO of the Montreal Parking Authority, who
was in charge of the project. To fulfill his mission,
20. Ancient Egypt And Gizeh Similarities
The great Ancient Egypt civilization is filled with magnificent architecture that
made its culture rich. The Stepped Pyramid by Imhotep, Mortuary precinct of
Djoser 2630 2611 BC, and the Great Pyramids of Gizeh 2490 2228 BC, are an
important part of the Ancient Egypt culture. Also the Ka and Maet played a vital
role in making these monuments. Ancient Egyptians really cared about their
Pharaohs and Gods and did anything to keep them satisfied, even if it meant to
carry a 2.5 ton block up 450 feet. The Pyramids of Gizeh and the Stepped Pyramid
have some similarities, many differences, and have a major influence in keeping the
Ka of the pharaoh happy .

Starting off, the Stepped Pyramid is the first pyramid made from permanent lime
stone. In addition, the Stepped Pyramid was made by a very respected artist
Imhotep. Imhotep used fiance and engaged columns in the stepped pyramid to
give respect to the old architectures, and the Stepped Pyramid walls mimics walls
that surround the royal palace. At the same time, Imhotep wanted to stack mastaba

climb to heaven. Even more, the corridor walls block all light and the fake
buildings represent shrines of the upper and lower kingdoms. More over, the

21. Gerald Graff
The thought of incorporating personal interests in traditional academic studies is
certain to conjure images of an exciting and creative learning environment. These
images can leave individuals with a different perception of what true academic
structure may be. For American author Gerald Graff, re developing traditional
academic courses to attract personal learning styles is the best way to gain the
interest of students and increase their ability to retain knowledge. In contrast,
traditional educators argue that learning is best accomplished through academic
resources and successfully fulfilling core requirements. By ignoring the complex
relationship between personal interest and academic knowledge, traditional educators
negatively impact academiaby rejecting the opportunity to develop a diverse and
creative student population, isolating students that lack academic knowledge and
dismissing effective techniques that have educational merit in augmenting critical
thinking skills.
Graff insinuates that critically analyzing and writing about personal interests is a
creative way to develop a diverse student population. When it comes to learning,
rather it be in a traditional grammar school or the more contemporary classrooms of
colleges and universities, there is no argument stronger than incorporating personal
interests in academic work that appeals to students. This type of learning engages a
student because it encourages curiosity with regards to exploring the main ideas

24. Art Analysis Of Thomas P. Anshutz s A Rose
The image I chose for this paper is titled A Rose. The image is a painting painted in
oil on a canvas and was painted by Thomas P. Anshutz. The painting was produced
in Pennsylvania during 1907. I researched this image on ARTstor by using the term
realism and then I narrowed down my search by selecting a filter to return paintings
as well as setting the geography filter to North America. The painting belongs to The
Metropolitan Museum of Art s collection and is on display in the American Wing in
the gallery of Images of Womanfrom 1880 to 1910.
I selected this painting because the colour contrast of the pink dress against the dark
background caught my eye. I also found the expression of the young woman to be
interesting.
The painting depicts a young woman in a pink dress sitting down. The background
is very dark but three things can be made out by the viewer. Starting with the
ground plane of the painting, an orange carpet can be seen covering the entire
floor. It is patterned and contains yellows, greens and blues. The cool toned colours
are darker in hue than the warm toned. Secondly, there appears to be a cabinet or a
desk lining the wall behind her. The wood of the cabinetry is carved with detailed
designs and is made of a dark stained wood. Despite the dark background a single red
rose can be seen on top of the cabinetry. The rose looks freshly picked and shows no
signs of withering in its petals. It is painted in a muted red colour that allows it to
stand out on

Rhetorical Situation: Memoirs tend to delve into all aspects of the writer s life
surrounding a historic event. Laura Hillman holds this true in her memoir: I Will
Plant You a Lilac Tree. She writes about all aspects of her experience as a survivor
of Schindler s list. As Hillman pours her life onto the pages for the audience, she
conveys herself as an emotional and vivid author as she recounts the tragedies of the
holocaust. Effectively, the context, audience, author, and subject of her memoir stand

The title of Laura Hillman s memoir, I Will Plant You a Lilac Tree, plays a
significant role in her love life. As the promise the man she met in the
concentration camp, she holds onto that little promise to help her survive the
horrors she endured. From her childhood, Hillam grew up with the lilac tree
blooming around her mother s birthday. After her father s death, her family moves
into their grandmother s house for fear of deportation. She sits with her mother
and brothers And I wanted to see the lilac tree, imagining it full of blossoms. I had
always liked the fragrance of lilacs...There was no lilac tree, and Papa was not here
to sing his songs of love (36). She associates the lilac tree with the happiness of her
old life. She misses her father and wants desperately to get back to the time where
they were all together and life was normal. Over time, she falls deeper into her
depression and longing for a time that no longer exists. Yet, she finds a man who
treats her like gold and brings her all the food and clothes that he can smuggle to
her. When Dick asks her what she misses most about home, she responds with the
lilac tree and all the memories associated with it. In turn, he vows One day, when this
is over, I ll plant you a lilac bush. Perhaps it will grow old and become a tree, like the

Increased productivity as a result of training and development within a sheriff s
organization Introduction Training and development is one of the fields in human
resource management. It is concerned with the activity of the organization that is
aimed towards bettering the performance of the individual members of the
organization as well as groups and teams in the organization. It also has other names
such as learning and development and human resource development. It encompasses
three main activities. These are training, development and education. Training is the
activity which involves focusing on and evaluating the job that is held by the
individual. Development refers to the activities which focus on the activities taken by
the organization which employs the staff to better the working environment. These
activities are next to impossible to evaluate. Education refers to focusing on the jobs
that individuals hold in future and it is evaluated against these jobs. When an
organization undertakes these training and development activities, they led to

Oskar Schindler grew up in a prosperous Catholic family with all the privileges
money could buy. He grew up to be a German industrialist, spy, and a member of the
Nazi Party, who outwitted Hitler and the Nazis to save more Jews than any other
from the deathly events of World Warа
ҐҐ. With the help of his wife, Emilie Schindler,
Oskar Schindlersaved the lives of 1,200 Jews during the Holocaustby employing them
in his ammunition and enamelware factories, spending millions bribing the SS,
and eventually risking his life to rescue the Schindler Jews ( The Oscar Schindler
Story ) Oskar Schindler was not one to pass up an opportunity to make some
money. He marched into Poland with the SS and dove head first into the black
market. He soon began to make friends with the Gestapo, the secret state police, by
softening them up with women, money and alcohol. His newfound connections
helped him to acquire a factory, which he ran with the cheapest labor around, Jews.
At first, it seemed like he was another German money driven industrialist but
somewhere along the way something changed. In December 1939, as the German
occupied Poland was being torn up by the events of the Holocaust, Schindler took
his first steps in becoming a Holocaust hero. If you saw a dog going to be crushed
under a car, he said later of his wartime actions, wouldn t you help him? ( Oskar

Kim Kardashians of the wild? Exaggerated sexual swellings in non human primates:
mechanisms and functions
Oedemas of sexual tissue with extracellular water retention and swellings of the skin
of the circumanal, subcaudal and paracallosal regions (Krohn Zuckermann, 1937;
Dixson, 1998a) are observed in many species of non human primates, baboons being
famous for their large bright behinds. We know that this engorged feature has
evolved independently 5 times as different tissue areas are involved in each of the
species exhibiting the trait (Dixon, 1998b). Multiple independent evolutions of this
trait suggests that the exaggerated swellings serve an adaptive purpose. (Tecumseh

Analysis on faecal matter showed that turgescence of baboon ano genital swellings
links to the follicular phase of the ovarian cycle, while deturgescence links to the
luteal phase, leading to the conclusion that the swellings are under the influence of
hormonal control in primates (Gillmann and Gilbert, 1946). This suggests that the
role of sexual swellings is to visually indicate the onset of ovulation to male non
human primates. It is observed that swellings indeed attract males independently of
olfactory or behavioural cues (Bielert 1982; Saayman 1970) suggesting evolution of
this attraction to larger swellings occurred due to the reproductive success associated
with it. Males that are able to recognise swellings, discriminate between them and to
mate with the female when hers are largest, would have higher chances to sire an
infant, resulting in high selection pressure on males to react to swelling state.
Ulterior motives
Examples have been found where swellings also occur in other situations where
ovulation is highly unlikely. For example in chimpanzees (Wallis, 1972) tumescence
was observed in an irregular pattern throughout pregnancy, and in Sooty Mangabeys a
swelling virtually identical in size to maximum conception swelling was observed
consistently in the first trimester. (Hadadian Bernstein, 1979) This
29. Power In The Prince By Machiavelli
A Prince, who is the ruler of a state, faces many challenges in holding power. He is
put to the test with the many choices made as a ruler. This includes choosing
whether to be loved or feared, and choosing if the conquered shall be ruined. In
addition, he must find a way to have the support of the people. In order to be a
successful ruler, a prince has to have public order based on the rules of morality. On
the other hand, in order to gain more power and keep power he has to break the
same rules. This includes being ruthless, dishonest, and using people. In his book The
Prince, Machiavelli suggests ways in which someone can acquire and hold power.
He does this by urging that a prince be bold, and that at times he should be cruel, or
else he will lose the support of his subjects resulting in the government being
overthrown. In addition, he states that a prince should lie to his subjects, then lie
again when caught. Besides that, he says a prince should lure others into trusting
him then murder them. Machiavelli also says that a prince should hide behind
others when he is caught for his offenses. In one section, while discussing mixed
monarchies, Machiavelli discusses how it s easier to conquer land that is similar
culturally than to conquer land that isn t similar culturally. There are problems that
arise with a culturally different land. He writes about how changes are needed to be
made if the area has a different language or way of life. To fix differences, he
30. The Social Determinants Of Health
Conditions of birth and people s growth, lifestyles, occupations and age strongly
influence their health. This essay focuses on children between the ages of zero to 19
and examines what the social determinants of health are. Firstly, it attempts to analyse
poverty, family violence, addiction and the impacts on the health of younger New
Zealanders who are exposed to those determinants. Secondly, strategies, initiatives and
prevention services are identified at national, regional and local levels to investigate
what the government and other non government organisations are doing to ensure
that the rights of children are being upheld. Children deserve to have the best start in
life to enable healthy growth and development of their own special skills and talents.
They need warm, healthy homes to live in, good nutritious food to give them energy
to grow and learn, and opportunities for education, along with other activities that
help them progress through life. They need the support and care of their parents,
whanau and communities that have their best interests at heart. The circumstances
in which people live are shaped by the distribution of resources, power and money
at global, national and local levels. Economics, social policies and politics all have a
part to play (World Health Organisation [WHO], 2016). Social determinants look at
key aspects of peoples living and working circumstances, and what the implications of
these circumstances are on their long term health.
31. Burmese Days Analysis
Burmese Days was the book that took the history lecture and made it real life. To
me, there is a big difference between being told something happened and realizing
that it happened. History gives you a look back perspective. You have all the
information so you are able to make an educated decision and judge the people of
the time for what they did. Burmese Days allowed for a glimpse into the time period
without that the rose covered glasses. We were in the middle of a British Colony and
seeing everything that it could entail. In Burma, much like the other colonies, the
British have made themselves the superior race. In Burmese Days Orwell
showcases two native characters that have high ranks vocationally one Burmese, U
Po Kyin, and one Indian, Dr. Veraswami, but because of their race are seen as
inferior. Throughout the novel, these two have the goal of being elected a member of
the English club, where the British people spend most of their free time avoiding the
natives and pretending to be in England. The thing about either native being elected
though, neither one of them planned on being an active member of the club. In fact,
they knew it would be more of a symbolic membership.
This idea of a symbolic membership inside of a little British society inside of Burma
seemed to contradict the idea of the white man s burden that the British had been
forcing down the world s throat as the built their empire. It was their duty to help
these savages and children of
32. The Domestic Factors Of Brazil
Analysis of the relevant domestic factors
Brazil ranks as the fourth largest exporter in the world excluding export of cotton
fibre and the second largest employer in the country. The Brazilian textile and
fashion industry has 30,000 companies and it is worth up to $63bn. This industry
produces 9.5 million garments every year. There is a higher demand for Brazilian
designers such as Oskelin, Carlos Miele, and Alexander Herchcovich within the
growing middle class society. Brazilian Fashion Designers Association (ABEST)
was started less than 10 years and now they have 54 members exporting textile to
48 countries. However, Brazilian Textile and Garment Association (ABIT) imports
60% of the garments worth up to $1.450bn from China and it is a 500% increase
since 2006. The board of ABIT has raise awareness about the Brazilian textile
industry at a governmental level and offer assistance to become more competitive.
The problem is the production cost levels and the cost of labour in Brazil is higher. In
addition, the international trade rules and procedures of Brazil are more complex and
the international trade is not supported by any international agreements. As a result,
the domestic market of Brazilian textile industry only produces for local retailers and
customers. Brazil is an interesting case among the developing huge producers of
textile around the world with its solid local business sector (Pasquinelli, 2012).
The Brazilian fashion industry appears to have in constructed

Moreover, from chapters 13 18, the first few paragraphs each revolve around Mr.
Rochester, leading many to claim that Jane had become too focused on marriage
and had lost her feminist will. Bronte was further critiqued for how Jane reacted to
Mr. Rochester s proposal, after their near wedding, that Jane should become his
mistress. Unsurprisingly, Jane immediately refused, but claimed that it was
because she was unhappy with how society would perceive her should she become
a mistress, a decision which put pride before her own happiness. It could be
argued, however, that Jane was merely unhappy with the idea of being a mistress
for her own reasons and simply chose to console Mr. Rochester with her diplomatic
response. If this is in fact the case, readers may wonder why Jane felt compelled to
spare Mr. Rochester s emotions when he so clearly betrayed and misused her.
While Jane Eyre is a novel that is composed of many different themes and elements,
the story principally revolves around the romance between Mr. Rochester and Jane.
Although romance novels were very common during the 19th century, Bronte s novel
differed by incorporating issues into the romance that relate to the

everyone is cut out for the leadership role. A major leadership role that most
organizations have is a Chief Executive Officer (CEO). CEOs are considered the

Employment growth will vary by industry and is largely dependent on the rate of
industry growth. Top executives should face very strong competition for jobs. With
strong competition being predicted between executives, it would be advantageous to
further the level of education above the required minimum by completing a master s
or doctorate program.
Many aspiring CEOs choose to pursue a Master of Business Administration (MBA)
or a similar graduate degree. These programs can be pursued before finding work
within an industry or after having been employed for some time. Those who are
currently working in a corporate or managerial position can enroll in a part time
professional or executive MBA program that integrates practical employment
knowledge into the curriculum. MBA students might take classes in strategic
management, finance, organizational theories and managerial economics. For
individuals who may have an interest in leading a global organization, pursuing study
abroad options allows the study of international business and the development of
different cultural and societal skills. Most MBA programs require students to select a
concentration to focus on. Individuals can take advantage of this opportunity by
selecting an emphasis that relates to the industry they wish to advance in. Many
programs allow students to specialize in fields like marketing, finance, information
technology,

avoid them. New buyers may also need to consider bringing a mechanic to make an
inspection on the car. Gorham says, A suggestion that the consumer have the car
inspected by a mechanic before buying it (Gorham 2). Mechanics will know what
problems are major or minor and can help the buyer decide if the car is worth the
price. Result If the steps were followed correctly, the car should last a long time and
still satisfy the buyer. No major repairs should be
40. The World s Largest Type Of Earthquake
The Pacific Northwest is often viewed is at risk for a megathrust earthquake of nine
magnitudes; the amount of destruction caused by this earthquake can be limited with
adequate preparation of infrastructure and comprehensive earthquake education. The
collision of the Juan de Fuca and North American plates make the Cascadia
Subduction Zone a potentially hazardous area. There has not been a megathrust
earthquakein the last 300 years or so in the northwest. The last megathrust
earthquake occurred on January 26, 1700. While there are no written records of the
earthquake, the tsunami it caused was recorded by villages in Japan. The rings of
surviving spruce trees from this earthquake provide evidence of a large natural
disaster in 1700. A... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Without a recent earthquake to study the effects before and after, an accurate
prediction cannot be made. The Cascadia Subduction Zone differs from other plate
boundaries in a number of ways, including its age, thermal structure and the
character of the seismogenic portion of the plate interface (e.g. Hyndman and Wang,
1993; 1995). It would therefore be helpful if further long term studies, such as those
referred to in this paper, are undertaken at other sites in the Pacific Northwest. (Long,
12) Using previously published data from Washington and Oregon, we find that the
analysis of Hyndman and Wang (1995) has greater support from the geological
record compared with that by Mitchell et al. (1994) However, both models must
address the significant differences which exist between their predictions and the long
term geological evidence for earthquakes and RSL change in Washington and Oregon.

There have been other efforts made to predict the next megathrust earthquake in the
northwest, one of those being the study of slow earthquakes. These earthquakes are
consistent and have the potential to predict large earthquakes. They release fault
pressure over a period of weeks or months, rather than minutes like typical
earthquakes. The Cascadia Subduction Zone has some of the most periodic slow
earthquakes, and is thus the best studied in the world. The average rate of motion
along the plate boundary is 4 cm/yr, but as GPS measurements of surface deformation
revealed,
41. The Amazon. Com
Amazon.com is widely regarded as the first significantly successful enterprise to sell
traditional consumer goods over the Internet and the epitome of retail electronic
commerce. According to analyst Lauren Cooks Levitan, when you think of
Web shopping, you think of Amazon.com first.
Customers shop by visiting www.Amazon.com, a World Wide Web site where they
can search among more than 3 million book titles and purchase ones they like by
entering a shipping address, credit card number, and other information. After the first
purchase, the customer s shipping and credit card information are stored securely in
Amazon.com s information system. The next time, it only takes a single mouse click
to complete an order. Amazon.com makes it very easy to buy a book on line.
Making the customer s on line experience warm and pleasant is a key
Amazon.com strategy. The site retains information on each customer and even uses
an information technology called collaborative filtering to recommend books based
on the past purchases of buyers with similar histories. In addition to the
personalization afforded each shopper, the site allows readers to post their own
reviews of books, offers profiles of authors, and includes staff recommendations. The
result has been a perception among customers that they share a relationship with the
company one they value so highly that in February, 1999, when it was revealed
Amazon.com accepted payment from publishers to have books placed on
recommended lists,
42. Postpartum Depression On The Mother And Parenting
For this research paper, I decided to focus on postpartum depression. While being a
listening ear, I was introduced to the reality that not every mother has the attachment
to her child that almost every movie in Hollywood portrays. After hearing the story
and not sure if it was a real thing, I began to search the web for information, stories,
and news coverage related to the rarely discussed category of depressed known as
Postpartum Depression(PPD). I wanted to find solid proof that this was an actual
diagnosis and what the long term effects would be, as well as what was being done to
reduce the amount of women that suffer from this. This research should allow me to
better understand the causes and effects of postpartum depression on the... Show more

Problems such as breastfeeding, marital or relationship issues, feeling inadequate, and
not having the social support can all add to the stress factors that could potentially
lead and contribute to postpartum depression (Postpartum Depression, 357). Primary
Care Physicians are ultimately more likely to make the diagnosis of PPD over their
obstetrician since they usually have a more solid foundation and trust built up after
being seen there more frequently. A test is given to women around eight to twelve
weeks postpartum in order to determine the likelihood of postpartum depression and
overall health of the mother (Postpartum Depression, 358 359). Another scholarly
journal I found was Disorganized attachment in early childhood: Meta analysis of
precursors, concomitants, and sequelae by Marinus H van Ijzendoorn, Carlo
Schuengel, and Marian J. Bakermans Kranenburg published by Cambridge
University. The journal describes how a mother s postpartum depression affects the
mental development of the child as well as their own attachment issues that can result
in educational delays as well as behavioral issues (Development and Psychopathology,
228). Children develop attachments with anyone who gives them steady care,
disregarding the quality of that care. The effect on infants whose mother went
through postpartum depression (PPD) can impact the development and quality of life
that child will have (Child Development, Feb 1993). A long term effect
43. Using Moving Averages in Stock Trading
A way to use moving averages is to use them as dynamic support and resistanceWe
like to call it dynamic because it s not like your traditional horizontal suppo
resistance lines. They are constantly changing depending on recent price
action. There are many traders out there who look at these moving averages as key
sup resistance. These traders will buy when price dips and tests the moving averagif
price rises and touches the moving average. Watch the blue line as support.
It looks like it held really well! Every time price approached 20 EMA and tested it, it
acted as resistance and price bounced back down. Amazing, huh?
One thing you should keep in mind is that these are just like your normal support and
resistance lines. This means that price won t always bounce perfectly from the
moving average. Sometimes it will go past it a little bit before heading back in the
direction of the trend.
There are also times when price will blast past it altogether. What some traders do
is that they pop on two moving averages, and only buy or sell once price is in the
middle of the space between the two moving averages. You could call this area the
zone .(figure 11) In an uptrend, as with an uptrend line, the moving average line
shows more instances where the average coincided with or acted as, support and in a
downtrend, similar to what happens using a down trend line, there are many
instances where the moving average coincided with resistance.
There are some traders who use intraday
44. Coronal Mass Ejection Essay
Coronal Mass Ejection also known as CME is usually created around the sun s
surface by magnetic reconnection. CME is a large bubble of gas and magnetic field
lines that are emerged from the sun. There isn t a full proven understanding of how
CME s occur but Astronomers have come to a theory that because the sunis a fluid,
the turbulence gets kinks that get shot out into space in any direction as a
superheated gas. The gas that is ejected from the sun is made of protons and
electrons carried through solar winds. This gas is known as plasma and can
accelerate over 1 million miles per hour and reach Earth that is 93 million miles
away in less than 4 days. When the sun is most active Coronal Mass Ejections can
happen multiple times per day however, it usually occurs once every 5 days. Its
definition is the effect on earth if a massive event in the result of struggling to
survive. This refers to a specific form of continuing education that helps those in
the medical field, maintain competence and learn about the new and developing
area in their own field of work. Content for these programs is developed, reviewed,
and delivered by faculty who are experts in their individual clinical areas. These
activities may take place in live events, written applications, electronic media, online
programs, video, or audio. Any potentially conflicting financial relationships for
faculty members must be both disclosed and resolved in a useful way. A CME drives
a shock wave which could
45. Slacker By Nathan Rabin Summary
Many may view a slacker as one who will procrastinate on everything meaningful,
one who is ignorant, lazy, incompetent, or even uneducated. Nathan Rabin argues
statistically that men ranging from their late teens to late 20s happen to be in the
prime time when you re too young to realize your limitations, or even to know that
limitations exist (Rabin 482). The author argues that no man should have a limit
but to realize our potential as human beings as a whole to perceive red lights from
green lights, and to keep going when someone else said STOP. This essay
influences its readers to believe Rabin s assertion that being a so called slacker is
not so bad through its anecdotal evidence, appealing to the opposition, and societal
values. Nathan Rabin affectively uses anecdotal evidence to make readers
understand what he means when he says that no man should be declared a slacker
because he s dressed in a baggy... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Men are not created with the same mind set nor the same motives as one another,
but we all had the same thought of becoming a billionaire at age 20. The author
mentions Mr. Zuckerberg as a 26 year old scruffily dressed Jewish kid who started a
cultural revolution in his dorm room and inspired a movie that may just win an
Oscar for best picture (Rabin 482). Also another way he effectively appeals to the
opposition by the opinion of other people, because no one in their right minds would
guess a person who dresses in their pajamas in the middle of broad day could be the
next 26 year old billionaire. But that s the flaws of judging a book by its cover. One
can say that Mr. Zuckerberg had a clarity to be successful, there s a saying in which
goes for everyone who is striving to be successful If you don t help build your own
dream, someone else would hire you to build theirs . Not all men are like Mr.
Zuckerberg, but we sure can be inspired to be like
46. Nt1310 Unit 3 Data Analysis Paper
Over the past few years, the needs for special purpose applications that could
handle large amount of data have increased dramatically. However, these
applications required complex concepts of computations such as parallelizing the
tasks, distributing data, and taking care of failures. As a reaction to this problem, a
new abstract layer that allows us to express the simple computations we were
trying to perform but hides the complex details was designed, MapReduce. This
paper is an influential paper in the field of large scale data processing. It simplifies
the programming model for processing large data set. The paper describes a new
programming model based on lisp s map and reduces primitives for processing
large data set. In addition, the paper also describes a framework to automatically
parallelize the map tasks across various worker machines. Each map task produces
an intermediate data set that is used by the reduce task to combine the map task
results. This paper also proposes various extensions to the framework to allow the
users to customize the data partitioning as well as combiner. Also, the framework
provides a mechanism for the user programs to track relevant metrics and publish
them. This paper describes the various error scenarios that happen in a large cluster of
commodity hardware machines. Fault tolerance to handle various map tasks... Show

This paper proposes backup task mechanism to improve the straggler tasks which are
the final set of MapReduce tasks that take unusually longer time to complete. The
simplified programming model proposed in this paper opened up the parallel
computation field to general purpose programmers. This paper served as the
foundation for the open source distributing computing software Hadoop as well as
tackles various common error scenarios that are encountered in a compute cluster and
provides fault tolerance solution on a framework
47. I Want To Pursue A Degree In Kinesiology
I have always been interested in physical activities and how it can influence an
individual s mental and physical health. My passion towards athletics developed at a
young age as I have been involved in various sports including swimming and tennis.
Moreover, my desire to study Kinesiology stems from the technological development
and its impact on modern society. As technology advances, it allows for many
individuals to become dependent on their devices thus proposing healthrisks. I wish to
pursue a Bachelor of Kinesiologydegree in hopes to promote a healthier lifestyle
amongst society and gain a greater understanding of how physical movements can
affect the human body. Furthermore, my experience as a cooperative education
student at Humber... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition, I have received a certificate for completing a customer service and
leadership training where we explored how factors like words and physical gestures
can contribute to becoming an effective leader and service provider. Likewise, other
circumstances that helped me pursue leadership opportunities lies within my
association with the dramatic arts council where we promoted dramatic art related
activities. Specific occasions that enabled me to present my leadership skills include
events where we invited students from different elementary schools to show them the
high school and dramatic arts environment. My leadership potential is evident
through my interactions with the students because I have to organize activities and
think of solutions for possible issues that may arise. In doing so, we also wanted
students to understand that dramatic arts includes writing creative pieces and
technological effects like sound and lighting, not just

Compare and contrast nursing interventions for patients with knee replacements, hip
replacements, and fractures
Joint replacements are among the most common and successful orthopedic surgeries,
giving more people the opportunity to remain active well into their golden years.
(American) The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons estimates there are
more than 300,000 total hip replacements (THRs) and 600,000 total knee
replacements (TKRs) performed every year numbers that will only increase in the
future. Most patients who undergo total joint replacement, or arthroplasty, experience
a dramatic reduction in pain and a significant improvement in their ability to function
in daily life. (American Hip)

One of the most significant factors in the patient s recovery is family involvement
and support. Family acceptance and support can help a patient deal with issues the
patient may have during the rehab process. Positive attitudes and reinforcement
from loved ones often help the patient work towards recovery. Family contribution,
flexibility, and open communication can overcome various barriers. Families who
inspire hope can help the patient to adjust and become more confident in his or her
own abilities. Finally, family and friends can also offer practical support, such as
rides to the doctor or pharmacy, going to the grocery store, and offering to babysit
during health care visits. The encouragement of family and friends can motivate
people who have been having difficulties in their rehabilitation to take steps to be
more active and get back to work more quickly than those who do not have a strong
support
