Essay The Abortion Arguments of Cider House Rules
The Abortion Arguments of Cider House Rules
I am writing this essay on a Saturday evening, not with any real contemplation, or even planning. I am
writing this because I was just minutes ago watching the movie Cider House Rules. I won t go into the
plot of the movie, but, to explain my motivation for writing this, I will simply describe one portion of
the movie.
The scene at issue in my mind right now is one where a fourteen year old girl comes to the orphanage
which is the setting for part of the movie. This girl came to the orphanage because it was known in the
region as a place that performed abortions. She had had a crude abortion performed in such a way that
she had been severely injured (her uterus was punctured by a crochet ... Show more content on

In the movie, Homer is an orphan, and this may provide an interesting perspective in regards to the
status of the fetus. As an unwanted child himself, he empathizes with the unborn children that he
refuses to destroy.
So far, all we have talked about really is the emotion of the question of abortion. The purpose of this
essay (which will not be very long), is to examine these lines of reasoning, and to come to some
conclusion about the differing philosophies of these two characters.
The doctor s argument is, as I mentioned, very much a utilitarian one, and as you know, this sort of
argument doesn t sit well with me (see my Truth essays). Regardless of my perspective, though, the
doctor s first argument is one which many people (including some that I greatly respect) accept as a
good reason for legalized abortion. The doctor is making the very simple assessment that one death is
preferable to two. If the mother dies along with the baby, this is a waste and a shame, therefore he
feels as though he is obligated to perform an abortion that will not likely harm the young woman at
issue. Homer, on the other hand, takes a deontological stance he believes that his performing an
abortion is wrong, and that is as far as his reasoning has to go.
So far, the choice between philosophies is simple deontology or utilitarianism. In order to make the
choice a bit more relevant, allow me to

The Current Water Usage Of The Refugee Settlement Essay
The Zambian Refugee Settlement in Mayukwayukwa, which established by the United Nations in
1966, currently has no system for harvesting rain water or for storing water in bulk. Zambia has a
monsoonal climate thus it receives all of its rain water in one small section of the year and is dry and
arid for the rest. This review will focus specifically on the water usage of the refugee settlement. This
area of research will prove to be invaluable for the specifications of the water harvesting and bulk
storage system as it will be the basis for which the required volumes of water are calculated. The
development of the Mayukwayukwa settlement will be stunted if they do not have access to sufficient
amounts of water for the refugees who live there or for the crops and animals. The objectives of this
paper are to assess the current water usage of the Mayukwayukwa Refugee Settlement and to predict
what the minimum volume is that will meet their basic requirements. The questions that I intend to
answer are: What is the current water usage of the refugee settlement in Mayukwayukwa? What is the
minimum volume that will meet the basic requirements of the people in the refugee settlement? An
accurate data set of water usage of the Refugee Settlement in Mayukwayukwa is impossible to find as
there have been no previous attempts to measure it for any reason. The total water usage of the
Mayukwayukwa Refugee Settlement is 64,240,000 Litres/Year. This total can be

How To Write An Essay On The Nuremberg Trials
Nuremberg Trials Final Draft
J.E.B. Spredemann once said, Choices made, whether bad or good, follow you forever and affect
everyone in their path one way or another. This is especially true for the war criminals that were
involved in the Holocaust. The Nuremberg Trials were a series of trials that consisted mostly of
criminals that led Nazi Germany during World War II with a goal to punish them for the crimes they
had committed. The trials are named after the place at which they were held: Nuremberg, Germany.
(Writers at United States Holocaust Memorial Museum) This was the place chosen for this due to the
Nazi roots that led to this place. They were held within the years of 1945 to 1949.(Writers at World

Spoon River Poetry Analysis
The 1915 poetry collection, Spoon River Anthology, by Edgar Lee Masters, offers a portrait of daily
life in a fictional Illinois town, Spoon River. As is evident from the poems Spoon River was an
economic boom town which profited greatly from its proximity to rail roads and a major waterway.
Regardless of its prosperity, Spoon River seems to have remained a demographically small town, and
the neighbors all knew each other very well, and a clear social hierarchy formed. One of the more
interesting aspects of the Spoon River Anthology is that the poems contained therein are a series of
grave epitaphs that tell a story about each deceased resident. Often, graveyards themselves can serve
as reminders of social hierarchies in the world of the living. Typically, only those decedents who had
family members and a community who cared for them would be laid to rest in the community grave;
the potter s field and the crematorium awaited those who passed away without family, in debt, or with
a criminal record. Thus, the initial assessment of the deceased within the Spoon River graveyard
would be that they were
good people in their lives.
Indeed, many of the epitaphs depict the decedents as moral, hardworking, and decent people.
However, when cross referencing the epitaphs from each citizen, it becomes clear that the prominent
members of Spoon River were incredibly corrupt in their day to day behavior. Ultimately, Masters
explores ethics in Spoon River Anthology by studying the fine

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory as Judeo Christian Allegory
In the classic children s film, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, which is based on the novel
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the author and writer of the screenplay, Roald Dahl presents the
viewer with a strikingly vivid metaphor that compares fundamental Judeo Christian beliefs with, that s
right, candy. The basic figures in the religion are given representational roles in the film that do not
hide, but instead sugar coat their meaning. Even the basic concepts of the religion are cleverly placed
in the film so that their symbolism is both recognizable and utilitarian. Overall, the film

Reflection On Good Life
With help from Socrates, Aristotle, and Mill, we have recently developed many well informed
outlooks on what a good life is capable of looking like. What is your understanding of the good life?
This is an interesting question because the term good life is taken subjectively by many people. The
word good itself means morally excellent, while the word life refers to a living being. Put the two
words together and it becomes more of a decision making process than a modified and opinionated
noun. It is essentially building your foundation as a person, and can reward you with many benefits.
The good life is a series of actions in which you accomplish in order to make yourself happy, wise,
and well cared for in the future. In the text, Selections from APOLOGY, by Plato, translated by
Benjamin Jowett, we learn about Socrates view on the good life. He taught his philosophy and ways of
thinking, to people for free, as he deemed happiness did not come from material things, like money.
Socrates, instead, believed that an active mind is a happier mind. He was all about thoughtfulness, and
questioning everything. He did a lot of self examination and became completely aware of who he was,
and wanted to be in the future. On page fourteen, Socrates states ... a man who is good for anything
ought not to calculate the chance of living or dying; he ought only to consider whether in doing
anything he is doing right or wrong acting the part of a good man or of a bad. Socrates

Descriptive Essay About A Swishy
It was my sophomore year. The weather was partially cloudy and felt just right. It was not too hot nor

football team wasn t the best in the district. The marching band is getting ready to perform our field
show for maybe the second time. Of course, band members including me stay after school just to hang
out and prepare ourselves to perform. They invited me to 7 Eleven to buy snacks, I tagged along
because I was craving Cheetos at that time. Juan and Andre, which were both freshmen at that time

how to cross the street stoned. If you were one of those cars passing by at that time you ll probably

We got our snacks and drinks from the store, as we came back I felt sluggish. The marching band

had went home to take a nap which they were dumb enough to believe my story. The band started to
warm up and as I anticipated, there was no way I was able to play or function. Dozing off every
second, made it hard for me to follow the director s instructions. Marching into the stadium and
playing a fanfare every chance we had, time went by faster. Gaining back my conscience, I then
realized we had 5 minutes to warm up for the field show. It was officially half time, we all got in our

The Recipe for Nature
The Recipe for Nature
Missing Works Cited
Nature is a fluid coalescence of complex magnificence resulting from an algorithmic mastery of
simplicity. It is no doubt an awe inspiring entity that invokes both great curiosity and bafflement in
those who attempt to account for its existence and splendor. It is often seen as overly reductionistic, if
not ¥§dangerous¥š, to try to condense the (mindless?) brilliance of nature through any sort of
mechanistic or logical means. And here we are faced with what Daniel Dennett calls Darwin¥Šs
dangerous idea: ¥§that all the fruits of evolution can be explained as the products of an algorithmic
process¥š (Dennett, 1995 p.60). It is no surprise that this idea might present a problem for the Homo
sapien ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, chance and randomness might disallow for the concept of ¥§survival of the fittest¥š and
instead allow for otherwise less adept members of the species to have increased reproducibility and
thus an increased genetic impact on subsequent generations. The fact that events can alter or in part
determine which members of a species are more likely to survive and reproduce, leads to the fact that
the specific outcome (e.g., which particular genes will be passed onto the next generation) of an
algorithmic process is not fixed, just that the inherent nature of the causal procedure is. For instance,
the algorithmic process of natural selection does not provide a certain mold by which to predict the
most viable members of a species, only that it is guaranteed that the most well adapted members of a
species will necessarily correspond to the most viable.
We now return to the question of how the complexity and intricacy of nature can be accounted for by
an algorithmic process constituted by an inundation of simple steps. William Paley¥Šs well known
watchmaker analogy is particularly useful here, in that it illustrates the problem of complexity of
design (i.e., of a watch) independent of a purposeful designer (i.e., a watchmaker). If a watch
represents a complexity in design that could not have possible arisen out of purposeless chance or
randomness alone, it must therefore have required a significant amount of ¥§design work¥š (i.e., work
done) (Dennett,

Question #1: After careful deliberation and analysis of the Reed Supermarkets case, the marketing
team has concluded that Mr. Jack Morrissey s goal of attaining a market sales share of 16% as being
achievable. It is important to note that market sales share is calculated in terms of dollar sales

The notion of our concept is to change the ways in which prices are perceived by customers while
maintaining the same quality products. The goal here is to offer products that are a bit more expensive
but within the dollar range from our competitors. More specifically, for a same sized item sold at the
dollar store, Reed will be charging a higher price for our product, but within a one dollar range. For
the same product in a smaller size than the dollar store item, Reed will be charging the same price. To
illustrate this point, take for instance, a 300 mL ketchup bottle sold at the dollar store for $1. That
same product will be sold at Reed for $1.30 or alternatively, $1.00 for a 200 mL bottle. Another
adjustment Reed can adopt is to price products in a way that the tens decimal place is moved down. So
instead of charging the regular $2.25, we can charge $2.19 before taxes. The figures vary slightly and
are fairly hard to detect. As a result, the price differences become negligible and easy to for customers
to disregard.
A third strategy is the increase in product varieties and introduction of new items with different
features. Also recommended is the use of reference pricing, or the fair price consumers expect to pay.
If ketchup prices are generally deemed to hover around $2.00 for a 300 mL bottle, the

Comparing Wilfred Owen And Jarrell
War Poetry: Analysis
Both Owen and Jarrell share the pains of war. Using literary devices such as diction, imagery, and
inner thoughts. Besides just the basics of literary devices the poets also use their close affiliation of
war to help express the true disasters that not many people knew of. They possessed unusual
sensibility. When digging a little deeper you are fully able to compare Owen s Dulce et Decorum Est
and Jarrell s Death of the Ball Turret Gunner.
At first glance Wilfred Owen s Dulce et Decorum Est is blatantly organized. In fact, it is comprised of
multiple stanzas. But that is Owen s purposeful structure. When delving further into the poem you
truly start to see Owen s intentions. While some poets romanticized war, Wilfred

Benefactors In Great Expectations
Benefactors
In the British classic Great Expectations, Charles Dickens uses a pair of benefactors who greatly
contrast each other to represent the dual social mindsets of society. Elusive convict Abel Magwitch
appears hostile to readers in the beginning of the story, but he later reveals himself as a selfless
laborer, working vigorously to finance young Pip s journey into becoming a gentleman. In contrast,
Miss Havisham is a venerable old woman who was jilted on her wedding day and raises her adopted
daughter to break the heart of adolescent Pip using her beauty. Dickens uses both of these wealthy
donors to display different aspects of morality, life experiences, and individual personality.
While Magwitch and Miss Havisham may both seem ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Miss Havisham also displays some gratitude towards Pip during his visits, saying, Thank you. Thank
you [for coming] most times he arrives a the Satis house. However, while Miss Havisham may have
truly been grateful for Pip s presence occasionally, most of these greetings are suggested to not be
sincere. This lack of sincerity proves that Miss Havisham thinks she is socially above Pip and
confirms the fact that she is unappreciative and her morals are corrupted. Magwitch s good morals
prove to lead him to a satisfying life while even though Miss Havisham starts to show signs of
reformation near her demise, her morally defunct lifestyle causes her to die heartbroken, regretful, and
lonely.
The second way the benefactors differ is through there past life experiences. Because Magwitch was
In jail and out of jail all his life, he learned to make the most of life and not dwell on things of the past

Contradicting to this, Miss Havisham secludes herself from the world after her fiancé most heartlessly
broke the marriage off on their wedding day (153). Dwelling on this event for the rest of her life, Miss
Havisham loses the determination to do anything but make Pip s life miserable. She accomplishes this
by pushing Pip to pursue Estella, saying If she favors you, love her. If she wounds you, love her. If she

Success And Success In George Gladwell s The Trouble With...
I think Gladwell s purpose for writing The Trouble with Geniuses, is to open our minds to a topic that
a lot of us have a major misconception about. Gladwell presents his ideas with great examples
throughout chapters 3 and 4 of the outliers. His topic is about success and how it is obtained. He talks
about a scientist by the name of Turmin who did an experiment and selected a group of geniuses and
watched their progress and downfalls throughout their lives.
Turmin did not get the results he expected he thought they would be exceptionally successful in
winning the Nobel prize or coming up with major inventions. But that was not the case, yes some of
them did well but then again some of them did not. So Gladwell brings this experiment to show us that
our idea about the connection between geniuses and success is incorrect, that they are not
automatically going to be successful because there are other factors that either help or prevent
geniuses from being successful.
In my opinion, Gladwell s target audience is all genders from the age group of teens up till young
adults. This book and these chapters specifically are great for those who just about embrace the world.
The book can give them guidance and encouragement about being successful and how you have to
work at things, that being a genius is not enough and there are some things that are not genetic and
you have to acquire them. An example from the book is
Oppenheimer and Langon both were geniuses but only Oppenheimer was

Metaethics, Normative, And Applied Ethical Theories
Ethical theory which can also be called moral philosophy is defined as the drive to analyze or
construct a system which can be anything that follows some type of rules. Defending and
recommending ideas of right and wrong behavior, ethical theories are usually divided into three
different subject areas which are metaethics, normative ethics, and applied ethics. Metaethics goes into
looking at where we get the ethics even come from and what do they mean, are they something that
we just made up, does it have do with more than just own emotions and feelings. The metaethical
answers that come out of this usually has to do with what God wants, universal truths, and what these
ethical terms mean within themselves.
Applied ethics usually looks at things that are widely give rise to public disagreement, these issues can
be things like animal rights homosexuality, capital punishment or things like that. There are things in
metaethics and normative ethics that are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This way usually tells us the good things that we should do what we should follow, and how we treat
others effects people. Even though there are three different ways of ethics it can be very foggy to
navigate because issues in ethics can be so similar you have to look at everything.
The reason that metaethics is important for determining moral judgements is because it is important
for everyone to be able to correctly tell you with logic Their metaethics position. Metaethics allows
you to dive deeper into what ethics is, it s important to go into the why something may be good or bad,
right or wrong. The real question is even if we got are ethics from different places weather you be

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Photodegradation
The applications of homogeneous photodegradation (single phase system) to treat contaminated water,
involves the use of an oxidant to generate radicals, which attack the organic pollutants to initiate
oxidation. The major oxidants used are:
Hydrogen peroxide (UV /H2O2)
Ozone (UV /O3)
Hydrogen peroxide and Ozone (UV /O3/H2O2)
Photo Fenton system (Fe+3 /H2O2)
1.2.1.4. Hydrogen peroxide
The use of hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant brings a number of advantages in comparison to other
methods of wastewater treatment. Commercial availability of the oxidant, thermal stability and storage
on site, infinite solubility in water, no mass transfer associated with gases. The most accepted
mechanism for this H2O2 photolysis is the rupture of the O O bond by the action of ultraviolet light
forming two hydroxyl radicals.

public issues, even when they are alone together. This is shown by their persistent talk about duty and
honor of Antony with his wife Octavia and the fact that it was not common for the husband and wife
to talk about their public life, whereas Antony only discusses private life with Cleopatra. The fact that
Octavia acts as the reconciler between Antony and Caesar also indulges her into their public life that
further justifies the point that there is an inversion of private life with Octavia and that even in the
only private scene of the play, they talk about public affairs. The inversion is further shown by, O my
good lord, / Believe not all, or, if you must believe, / Stomach not all. From this line we see that
Octavia cares about Antony, nonetheless the fact that she means the news, justifies the point that there
is an inversion and that even when they are alone together, Octavia talks about the news and public
affairs around them. Furthermore, the effect that Octavia says this privately to Antony, refers to the
fact that their relationship is only based and was made due to public affairs, when Antony married
Octavia to sign and agree to bond to Caesar closely, as they were against the same enemy, whereas
with Cleopatra, Antony discusses private issues as he is in love with her. This is showcased by, There s
beggary in the love that can be reckoned. Shakespeare shows through these words Antony s love to
Cleopatra, that he does not want to measure the extent of love. The significance of putting this in the
first scene of the play is to shows the strong love and bond between Antony and Cleopatra and that the
play ends with them dying together, signifies that the whole play is actually revolving around their
relationship and the relationship of Antony and

Being About Our Father s Business
Being About Our Father s Business Jennifer Butler PT Summer 2014 Dean Lee August 16, 2014
When looking at the three dimensions of worship, our first instinct is to put them in order of priority
for ourselves. This is what I did. I remember a pastor saying once in a sermon that if your relationship
with God is right, then you, your relationships, and your service/ministries will fall in line. I truly
believe that. So, I believe that the most important of the three is Upward Worship. Our main purpose
in life is to give God all of our praises and all of our honor. It s not about me. It s about living in God
and for God. Colossians 1:16 says For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth,
visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created
through him and for him. This means that we should be about our Father and not about ourselves. This
doesn t mean that on Sunday, we spend a couple of hours in church, it means that in everything we
think, say, or do we do to glorify and honor God. Some examples of Upward Worship would be
prayer, praise and thanksgiving, listen to his word in study and meditation. It is when we dedicate
ourselves to His will and His edification that we have the security of knowing that this upward form is
fulfilling. The Inward dimension of worship refers to our relationships with others. We are called to
serve, and serve with humility. When we are serving

How Organizations Can Move Beyond The First Steps Of...
ABSTRACT
Change is best carried through by the many, not by just the hero leader. Ten challenges to the initiation
and sustaining of change are elaborated, illustrated by a rich range of case studies and supported by a
practical checklist.
We all know that change and innovation are of the essence for organisations today and in future. The
bad news, according to Peter Senge, is that most change initiatives fail. The good news is that Senge
and his co authors think they know why and what to do about it.
Senge is the guru of the learning organisation whose previous book The Fifth Discipline was hailed as
a groundbreaking book about organisational transformation. Senge and his co authors, all of them
change experts, call this new book a Fifth Discipline resource . The aim of the book is to show how
organisations can move beyond the first steps of corporate change and sustain the momentum.
The problems that cause the failure of change projects cannot be solved by more expert advice, better
consultants or more committed managers, say Senge and co. They stem from our most basic ways of
thinking. Unless these change, new initiatives will only produce the same unproductive types of
action. The fundamental problem is that most change initiatives deal only with growth processes and
not with the limiting processes. We need to change our way of thinking so that we can understand the
forces that impede progress and develop strategies for dealing with them.

Communicative Language Teaching ( Clt ) Approach
The field of second language learning has undergone, in the past few decades, many changes.
Nonetheless, from a variety of methods that have come and gone, one has been adopted as pioneer,
which is the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) approach. Nowadays, in fact, Communicative
Language Teaching is one of the most common teaching methods adopted by teachers of second and
foreign languages all over the world. Its origin can be found in the late 1960s early 1970s in the
British academic system, which was undergoing a serious of changes that reflected, none other than,
the changes that were occurring in society. The aim of this paper is to give an overview of what
Communicative Language Teaching is, what are its main distinguishing and ... Show more content on

On the other hand, American linguists, based on Chomsky s language acquisition theory and concept
of linguistic competence, started rejecting the Oral Approach. This was the contingent cause for a shift
in Britain s language teaching method, SLT. In fact, also Britain s linguists began questioning SLT s
practical and theoretical foundations. Therefore, both Chomsky s studies as well as the criticality
British linguists had towards the more traditional methodologies led to the advent of the
Communicative Language Teaching approach.
This approach was very advanced for the time. It revolutionised the strategies of language learning
and also changed the role of the language teachers as well as the language learners. In contrast with
some of the methodologies previously adopted, its main goal is to teach the scholars the ability to
communicate. Thereby, Communicative Language Teaching bases itself upon the concept of language
competence, which is considered the actual basis of proficiency in a language. Hence, teaching
activities involve students in real life communicative situations in which the communicative task is of
more importance than the grammatical accuracy. Other exercises such as games, songs, problem
solving and role plays also are used in classrooms. It must be said that each of these activities are
sowed on the learners needs, therefore, if the class

Essay On Great Expectations
Dickens Great Expectations follows and examines the life of a fictional character, Pip, who lives in
and falls victim to a world that despises the common man. Ever since his parents death, his
overbearing sister and conceited uncle instilled in him the belief that he was worthless as a poor youth.
He initially sought refuge with his sister s affectionate husband, Joe, until the beautiful Estella made
him feel a deep inferiority for the first time, in which he began to see an inferiority in Joe and his work
as a blacksmith. Pip continues to struggle with his self esteem until he becomes an educated
gentleman, and becomes just as condescending as Estella, and to some extent, Mrs. Joe. Even with a

Joe and, later, Pip. It is important to note that it would be incorrect to say that all commoners are
completely worthless since then they would boast the same rank as those who are considered even less
than common, especially thieves and prisoners. For example, Magwitch, whose first memory is one of
theft, is the true embodiment of a worthless man; he even describes himself as a wretched warmint or
a bloodhound. Those who know that society only has hurt them still succumb to its degrading system.
Dickens also points out that, other than Biddy, Joe is the only early influence on Pip who does not fall
victim to the widespread hate of commonness. Mrs. Joe s side clearly has the majority: at Christmas
dinner all the guests, especially that swindling Pumblechook, ridiculed Pip, associating his nature with
that of a pig. When Pip went to become apprenticed to Joe, onlookers believed he would be tried as a
criminal: He s a young un, too, but [he] looks bad, don t he? In the scene, words such as bound, red
handed, and custody convey a sense that simply the way Pip appears on the outside makes the trip to
the court feel like a criminal trial. Dickens also applies this argument to the wealthy. The first time Pip
met the beautiful Estella, who spoke to him with disdain, and made him ashamed of my hands. If Pip s
childhood did anything for him, it convinced him that beauty,

developments within central science and its growth is ongoing. Both positive and negative effects
have occurred from the technology working in our criminal justice system. In this paper we will cover
the different options for new technology that helps stop crime.
Automated Fingerprint Identification System In the 1980 s there were a lot of unsolved criminal case

Our airports are the largest point of entry along with travel in general. This is a main reason why all
the technology and systems are put into the airports to keep high security. New technology is growing
every minutes of every day. There is always someone working on a better way or a faster way. Facial
recognition is essential as persons cannot accurately contain the same facial features this technology
will assist identify. This leads to capturing of the criminals and lessens the chances of convicting the
wrong person in someone else s criminal act.
Positive and Negative Effects to Technology There are a lot of non technical reasons to cautiously
look at how these older and more recent technologies are used inside our criminal justice system. Most
of the newest technical and science based technology include some of the similar effects which may
possibly down rank our own human rights and defense levels. * Our government could gain the

God s Predestination
In the articles, The Decree: Trinity and predestination , Creation: God s Time for Us , and Providence
God s Care for all He has made by Michael Horton we learn that the doctrine of God s predestination
of all things is clearly taught in scripture. Creation is not the result of primordial violence or conflict,
but the free decision, and generous, outgoing activity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in covenant love.
God s providence is his sustenance and governance of all things, including sin and evil, for good of his
people and the glory of his wisdom and grace in Christ. The author will provide several arguments for
each of the following terms: decree, creation, and providence.
To begin with, the author states that predestination is clearly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The creation narrative is not a myth, but an account of God s free historical act and his claim upon all
reality. The pattern of ex nihilo creation is a constant biblical parallel for the new creation language of
redemption. The doctrine of creation is at the heart of the sharp contrast between the biblical
worldview and the various monisms and dualisms of pagan ontologies. The author talks about creative
communication and the integrity of creation. He said that the Bible represents God s personal effective
speech. Humans were created as communicative partners in this covenant, to lead the rest of creation
in its hearing of God s speech and response of praise. He also presented beyond God of the gaps in
which he developed the God of the Gap apologetic and design and contingency. Finally in chapter ten,
he addressed I am the alpha and the omega : original, continual, and new creation in which he said that
God s act not only of preserving creatures but continually bringing about their fruitfulness and their
ongoing diversity. Furthermore in chapter eleven, he stated that providence is based on scripture.
There are three classes of scripture passages regarding providence such as soteriology, common grace,
and theodicy. Many Christians who have trouble accepting divine sovereignty in salvation
nevertheless recognize God s absolute lordship over nature and history. The author mention that
scripture does not say that God does all things himself, or that everything that happens is good in
itself, but that God works all things together for our good. He talks about concursus, or concurrence
which refers to the simultaneity of divine and human agency in actions or events. In permitting evil,
God not only lets it happen; he determines how far it will go and how he will work it for

Scuba Diving And Physics Of The Underwater World
Scuba Diving and Physics
Introduction
Exploration of the underwater world is fascinating; both from an aesthetic and scientific point of view.
One must have a passion for adventure and the knowledge and skills that come with a diving
certification. Diving with a Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus, S.C.U.B.A., remains the
ultimate way in which we can experience this wondrous environment and explore the scientific
principles behind humans delving into the expanse of the largest unexplored area on our planet. The
application of key fundamental tenets of science allows us to venture into a world in which we are,
without question, out of our element. The development of modern day scuba equipment is a
compelling one.

A significant breakthrough was not seen until 1943. Captain Jacques Cousteau and Emile Gagnan
finished development of the Aqua Lung. The Aqua Lung used a similar on demand valve that drew
from two to three cylinders that each contained over 2500 psi of breathable gas. Some years later, the
Lambertsen Amphibious Respiratory System was completed. This was later named S.C.U.B.A. This
was developed and used by the military of several countries. It remains in use by the military and
civilians all over the world. (2)
The invention of scuba permitted divers freedom of movement and granted them access to deeper
depths due to the longer dive times that it allowed. Without the need for very expensive support
devices in order to dive with contained air, the cost to dive in such a manner decreased drastically,
which gave rise to the community of recreational scuba divers.
Discussion
Although buoyancy is a concern for scuba divers; the main focus, and science, behind scuba diving
lies in pressure. On land, air is exerting a constant, imperceptible pressure on our bodies. This pressure
is not felt because the human body is comprised mainly of liquid. This liquid evenly distributes the
pressure throughout the body. There are three air spaces in the human body. These are the lungs,
sinuses and ears. The air in these spaces is equal to the pressure of

The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe, And Adolf Hitler
The White Witch or The Queen Of Narnia from C.S. Lewis book The Lion, the Witch, and the

Obviously, as mentioned earlier, the first trait Adolf Hitler and the White Witch share is cunningness.
The first piece of evidence that shows that the Witch is cunning is, While he was prince he would wear

She tricks him to bring his siblings so that she can kill them. To do this, she said she does not have an

Fantasies from Lucid Dreaming
Lucid Dreaming
When fantasies of the wider vistas of life is spoken about, dreams are what pops into the minds of
mostly everyone as every human being is free in their dreams. Deep within each and every one lie
infinite possibilities, and abilities to experience anything imaginable with the state of consciousness
while sleeping that each human holds that are yet to be discovered. The realisation of knowing that
you are dreaming also creates another world to escape to. The simple thought of being able to take
imagination to another level by taking action on it may simply be exciting and fascinating. However
how terrifying is the thought of losing control of your imagination and become torn apart in a dream?
Would a dream cause the same impacts as it would if it was in real life? There are always two sides to
everything and although there may be endless advantages to mastering this ability, just like the real
world, the journey of lucid dreaming may also have its up and downs. While this may be the case,
there is nothing in this world that does not involve risks and as much as it might be slightly scary
when it first gets a little bit out of control, there are hardly any real dangers and more advantages than
one can imagine.
The official term that is connected to this phenomenon is called lucid dreaming which was given to by
a Dutch psychiatrist named Federik van Eden in a 1913 article called A Study of Dreams . However,
people were exposed to this concept for

The Most Common Type of Medical Errors Essay
Cognitive errors of omission and commission are the most common types of medical errors that will
happen in the workplace environment. The omission is an error that will occur when action has not

performing a correct action at the wrong time or vice versa. For example, a worker subtracting figure

In US, to turn something on there is an expectation of control movement up, to the right, forward, or
clockwise. The table below shows most common stereotypes: Redundancy The reliability of a system
can be improved through the introduction of redundancy in the system. Some of the examples of
redundancy in the operation are as below: Two or more workers need to agree on certain action before
the action is executed Two or more signals should be present from the machine before a worker can
take action. Feedback Feedback is one of the essential aspect to detect faults in a system. In an
industrial setting, the operator s task is to classify items as good or faulty according to pre established
criteria. Executing an action and receiving feedback are two important variables affecting our ability
to carry out continuous tasks. These are some of the examples of feedback which every individual
receives in their daily life: Bank Statement Bills Receipts The design of feedback requires careful
consideration. Major trends may be obscured by minor variations if the grain size of the feedback is
too small. Alternatively, the patterning of feedback over time may be just too complex for the user to
extract meaning from it. If the grain size is too big or large, people may not be able to map the
information in the feedback onto specific behaviours amenable to self modifying.

Zeitoun Fight or Flight
Is it worth risking your life to protect your belongings and property when a Category 5 hurricane is
barreling towards your city? Is it right to disregard reports about a storm because in past experiences
the news has been wrong? In Zeitoun by Dave Eggers, a man named Zeitoun decides to let his family
evacuate New Orleans without him so that he can stay behind and protect his several homes, business,
and personal belongings from Category 5 hurricane Katrina. Once the hurricane passes, and he
survives, the city turns into chaos. The streets turn violent and the great city turns into a third world
country. The power goes out for weeks, and there is no water. The breakdown of all authority gets him
arrested and he is soon thrown behind bars. Zeitoun should have evacuated New Orleans with his
family for not only did he put his business in front of them, but also his shortsightedness almost left
his children without a father. Zeitoun s belongings and business items are all replaceable, but a father
is not.
Zeitoun s stubbornness blinds him from the true power of the storm for he constantly dismisses reports
on how strong Hurricane Katrina is. A couple of days before the hurricane his wife decides it is time to

  • 2. Essay The Abortion Arguments of Cider House Rules The Abortion Arguments of Cider House Rules I am writing this essay on a Saturday evening, not with any real contemplation, or even planning. I am writing this because I was just minutes ago watching the movie Cider House Rules. I won t go into the plot of the movie, but, to explain my motivation for writing this, I will simply describe one portion of the movie. The scene at issue in my mind right now is one where a fourteen year old girl comes to the orphanage which is the setting for part of the movie. This girl came to the orphanage because it was known in the region as a place that performed abortions. She had had a crude abortion performed in such a way that she had been severely injured (her uterus was punctured by a crochet ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the movie, Homer is an orphan, and this may provide an interesting perspective in regards to the status of the fetus. As an unwanted child himself, he empathizes with the unborn children that he refuses to destroy. So far, all we have talked about really is the emotion of the question of abortion. The purpose of this essay (which will not be very long), is to examine these lines of reasoning, and to come to some conclusion about the differing philosophies of these two characters. The doctor s argument is, as I mentioned, very much a utilitarian one, and as you know, this sort of argument doesn t sit well with me (see my Truth essays). Regardless of my perspective, though, the doctor s first argument is one which many people (including some that I greatly respect) accept as a good reason for legalized abortion. The doctor is making the very simple assessment that one death is preferable to two. If the mother dies along with the baby, this is a waste and a shame, therefore he feels as though he is obligated to perform an abortion that will not likely harm the young woman at issue. Homer, on the other hand, takes a deontological stance he believes that his performing an abortion is wrong, and that is as far as his reasoning has to go. So far, the choice between philosophies is simple deontology or utilitarianism. In order to make the choice a bit more relevant, allow me to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Current Water Usage Of The Refugee Settlement Essay The Zambian Refugee Settlement in Mayukwayukwa, which established by the United Nations in 1966, currently has no system for harvesting rain water or for storing water in bulk. Zambia has a monsoonal climate thus it receives all of its rain water in one small section of the year and is dry and arid for the rest. This review will focus specifically on the water usage of the refugee settlement. This area of research will prove to be invaluable for the specifications of the water harvesting and bulk storage system as it will be the basis for which the required volumes of water are calculated. The development of the Mayukwayukwa settlement will be stunted if they do not have access to sufficient amounts of water for the refugees who live there or for the crops and animals. The objectives of this paper are to assess the current water usage of the Mayukwayukwa Refugee Settlement and to predict what the minimum volume is that will meet their basic requirements. The questions that I intend to answer are: What is the current water usage of the refugee settlement in Mayukwayukwa? What is the minimum volume that will meet the basic requirements of the people in the refugee settlement? An accurate data set of water usage of the Refugee Settlement in Mayukwayukwa is impossible to find as there have been no previous attempts to measure it for any reason. The total water usage of the Mayukwayukwa Refugee Settlement is 64,240,000 Litres/Year. This total can be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This is especially true for the war criminals that were involved in the Holocaust. The Nuremberg Trials were a series of trials that consisted mostly of criminals that led Nazi Germany during World War II with a goal to punish them for the crimes they had committed. The trials are named after the place at which they were held: Nuremberg, Germany. They were held within the years of 1945 to 1949.(Writers at World Encyclopedia) The first parts of the trials was specifically reserved for only twenty four Axis nation criminals.(The History Learning Site) These are the most famous parts of the trials because it judged the people that were behind the mass murder known as the Holocaust. • 6. Spoon River Poetry Analysis The 1915 poetry collection, Spoon River Anthology, by Edgar Lee Masters, offers a portrait of daily life in a fictional Illinois town, Spoon River. As is evident from the poems Spoon River was an economic boom town which profited greatly from its proximity to rail roads and a major waterway. Regardless of its prosperity, Spoon River seems to have remained a demographically small town, and the neighbors all knew each other very well, and a clear social hierarchy formed. One of the more interesting aspects of the Spoon River Anthology is that the poems contained therein are a series of grave epitaphs that tell a story about each deceased resident. Often, graveyards themselves can serve as reminders of social hierarchies in the world of the living. Typically, only those decedents who had family members and a community who cared for them would be laid to rest in the community grave; the potter s field and the crematorium awaited those who passed away without family, in debt, or with a criminal record. Thus, the initial assessment of the deceased within the Spoon River graveyard would be that they were good people in their lives. Indeed, many of the epitaphs depict the decedents as moral, hardworking, and decent people. However, when cross referencing the epitaphs from each citizen, it becomes clear that the prominent members of Spoon River were incredibly corrupt in their day to day behavior. Ultimately, Masters explores ethics in Spoon River Anthology by studying the fine ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Reflection On Good Life With help from Socrates, Aristotle, and Mill, we have recently developed many well informed outlooks on what a good life is capable of looking like. What is your understanding of the good life? This is an interesting question because the term good life is taken subjectively by many people. The word good itself means morally excellent, while the word life refers to a living being. Put the two words together and it becomes more of a decision making process than a modified and opinionated noun. It is essentially building your foundation as a person, and can reward you with many benefits. The good life is a series of actions in which you accomplish in order to make yourself happy, wise, and well cared for in the future. In the text, Selections from APOLOGY, by Plato, translated by Benjamin Jowett, we learn about Socrates view on the good life. He taught his philosophy and ways of thinking, to people for free, as he deemed happiness did not come from material things, like money. Socrates, instead, believed that an active mind is a happier mind. He was all about thoughtfulness, and questioning everything. He did a lot of self examination and became completely aware of who he was, and wanted to be in the future. On page fourteen, Socrates states ... a man who is good for anything ought not to calculate the chance of living or dying; he ought only to consider whether in doing anything he is doing right or wrong acting the part of a good man or of a bad. • 11. The Recipe for Nature The Recipe for Nature Missing Works Cited Nature is a fluid coalescence of complex magnificence resulting from an algorithmic mastery of simplicity. It is no doubt an awe inspiring entity that invokes both great curiosity and bafflement in those who attempt to account for its existence and splendor. It is often seen as overly reductionistic, if not ¥§dangerous¥š, to try to condense the (mindless?) brilliance of nature through any sort of mechanistic or logical means. And here we are faced with what Daniel Dennett calls Darwin¥Šs dangerous idea: ¥§that all the fruits of evolution can be explained as the products of an algorithmic process¥š (Dennett, 1995 p.60). It is no surprise that this idea might present a problem for the Homo sapien ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, chance and randomness might disallow for the concept of ¥§survival of the fittest¥š and instead allow for otherwise less adept members of the species to have increased reproducibility and thus an increased genetic impact on subsequent generations. The fact that events can alter or in part determine which members of a species are more likely to survive and reproduce, leads to the fact that the specific outcome (e.g., which particular genes will be passed onto the next generation) of an algorithmic process is not fixed, just that the inherent nature of the causal procedure is. For instance, the algorithmic process of natural selection does not provide a certain mold by which to predict the most viable members of a species, only that it is guaranteed that the most well adapted members of a species will necessarily correspond to the most viable. We now return to the question of how the complexity and intricacy of nature can be accounted for by an algorithmic process constituted by an inundation of simple steps. William Paley¥Šs well known watchmaker analogy is particularly useful here, in that it illustrates the problem of complexity of design (i.e., of a watch) independent of a purposeful designer (i.e., a watchmaker). If a watch represents a complexity in design that could not have possible arisen out of purposeless chance or randomness alone, it must therefore have required a significant amount of ¥§design work¥š (i.e., work done) (Dennett, ... The goal here is to offer products that are a bit more expensive but within the dollar range from our competitors. More specifically, for a same sized item sold at the dollar store, Reed will be charging a higher price for our product, but within a one dollar range. For the same product in a smaller size than the dollar store item, Reed will be charging the same price. To illustrate this point, take for instance, a 300 mL ketchup bottle sold at the dollar store for $1. That same product will be sold at Reed for $1.30 or alternatively, $1.00 for a 200 mL bottle. Another adjustment Reed can adopt is to price products in a way that the tens decimal place is moved down. So instead of charging the regular $2.25, we can charge $2.19 before taxes. The figures vary slightly and are fairly hard to detect. As a result, the price differences become negligible and easy to for customers to disregard. A third strategy is the increase in product varieties and introduction of new items with different features. Also recommended is the use of reference pricing, or the fair price consumers expect to pay. If ketchup prices are generally deemed to hover around $2.00 for a 300 mL bottle, the ... I think Gladwell s purpose for writing The Trouble with Geniuses, is to open our minds to a topic that a lot of us have a major misconception about. Gladwell presents his ideas with great examples throughout chapters 3 and 4 of the outliers. His topic is about success and how it is obtained. He talks about a scientist by the name of Turmin who did an experiment and selected a group of geniuses and watched their progress and downfalls throughout their lives. Turmin did not get the results he expected he thought they would be exceptionally successful in winning the Nobel prize or coming up with major inventions. But that was not the case, yes some of them did well but then again some of them did not. So Gladwell brings this experiment to show us that our idea about the connection between geniuses and success is incorrect, that they are not automatically going to be successful because there are other factors that either help or prevent geniuses from being successful. In my opinion, Gladwell s target audience is all genders from the age group of teens up till young adults. This book and these chapters specifically are great for those who just about embrace the world. The fact that Octavia acts as the reconciler between Antony and Caesar also indulges her into their public life that further justifies the point that there is an inversion of private life with Octavia and that even in the only private scene of the play, they talk about public affairs. The inversion is further shown by, O my good lord, / Believe not all, or, if you must believe, / Stomach not all. From this line we see that Octavia cares about Antony, nonetheless the fact that she means the news, justifies the point that there is an inversion and that even when they are alone together, Octavia talks about the news and public affairs around them. Being About Our Father s Business Being About Our Father s Business Jennifer Butler PT Summer 2014 Dean Lee August 16, 2014 When looking at the three dimensions of worship, our first instinct is to put them in order of priority for ourselves. This is what I did. I remember a pastor saying once in a sermon that if your relationship with God is right, then you, your relationships, and your service/ministries will fall in line. I truly believe that. So, I believe that the most important of the three is Upward Worship. Our main purpose in life is to give God all of our praises and all of our honor. It s not about me. It s about living in God and for God. Colossians 1:16 says For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. This means that we should be about our Father and not about ourselves. This doesn t mean that on Sunday, we spend a couple of hours in church, it means that in everything we think, say, or do we do to glorify and honor God. Some examples of Upward Worship would be prayer, praise and thanksgiving, listen to his word in study and meditation. It is when we dedicate ourselves to His will and His edification that we have the security of knowing that this upward form is fulfilling. The Inward dimension of worship refers to our relationships with others. We are called to serve, and serve with humility. When we are serving ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Ten challenges to the initiation and sustaining of change are elaborated, illustrated by a rich range of case studies and supported by a practical checklist. We all know that change and innovation are of the essence for organisations today and in future. The bad news, according to Peter Senge, is that most change initiatives fail. The good news is that Senge and his co authors think they know why and what to do about it. Senge is the guru of the learning organisation whose previous book The Fifth Discipline was hailed as a groundbreaking book about organisational transformation. Senge and his co authors, all of them change experts, call this new book a Fifth Discipline resource . The aim of the book is to show how organisations can move beyond the first steps of corporate change and sustain the momentum. The problems that cause the failure of change projects cannot be solved by more expert advice, better consultants or more committed managers, say Senge and co. They stem from our most basic ways of thinking. Unless these change, new initiatives will only produce the same unproductive types of action. The fundamental problem is that most change initiatives deal only with growth processes and not with the limiting processes. We need to change our way of thinking so that we can understand the forces that impede progress and develop strategies for dealing with them. One of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Those who know that society only has hurt them still succumb to its degrading system. When Pip went to become apprenticed to Joe, onlookers believed he would be tried as a criminal: He s a young un, too, but [he] looks bad, don t he? In the scene, words such as bound, red handed, and custody convey a sense that simply the way Pip appears on the outside makes the trip to the court feel like a criminal trial. Dickens also applies this argument to the wealthy. The first time Pip met the beautiful Estella, who spoke to him with disdain, and made him ashamed of my hands. If Pip s childhood did anything for him, it convinced him that beauty, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

God s Predestination In the articles, The Decree: Trinity and predestination , Creation: God s Time for Us , and Providence God s Care for all He has made by Michael Horton we learn that the doctrine of God s predestination of all things is clearly taught in scripture. Creation is not the result of primordial violence or conflict, but the free decision, and generous, outgoing activity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in covenant love. God s providence is his sustenance and governance of all things, including sin and evil, for good of his people and the glory of his wisdom and grace in Christ. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The creation narrative is not a myth, but an account of God s free historical act and his claim upon all reality. The pattern of ex nihilo creation is a constant biblical parallel for the new creation language of redemption. The doctrine of creation is at the heart of the sharp contrast between the biblical worldview and the various monisms and dualisms of pagan ontologies. The author talks about creative communication and the integrity of creation. He said that the Bible represents God s personal effective speech. Humans were created as communicative partners in this covenant, to lead the rest of creation in its hearing of God s speech and response of praise. He also presented beyond God of the gaps in which he developed the God of the Gap apologetic and design and contingency. Finally in chapter ten, he addressed I am the alpha and the omega : original, continual, and new creation in which he said that God s act not only of preserving creatures but continually bringing about their fruitfulness and their ongoing diversity. Furthermore in chapter eleven, he stated that providence is based on scripture. There are three classes of scripture passages regarding providence such as soteriology, common grace, and theodicy. Many Christians who have trouble accepting divine sovereignty in salvation nevertheless recognize God s absolute lordship over nature and history. The author mention that scripture does not say that God does all things himself, or that everything that happens is good in itself, but that God works all things together for our good. He talks about concursus, or concurrence which refers to the simultaneity of divine and human agency in actions or events. Without the need for very expensive support devices in order to dive with contained air, the cost to dive in such a manner decreased drastically, which gave rise to the community of recreational scuba divers. Discussion Although buoyancy is a concern for scuba divers; the main focus, and science, behind scuba diving lies in pressure. On land, air is exerting a constant, imperceptible pressure on our bodies. This pressure is not felt because the human body is comprised mainly of liquid. This liquid evenly distributes the pressure throughout the body. There are three air spaces in the human body. These are the lungs, sinuses and ears. Deep within each and every one lie infinite possibilities, and abilities to experience anything imaginable with the state of consciousness while sleeping that each human holds that are yet to be discovered. The realisation of knowing that you are dreaming also creates another world to escape to.
