Watching the TED talk that Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie gave on The Danger of a
Single Story was powerful. A single story has insufficient primary sources to have
the full comprehension of the real story. Seeing Adichie verbalize issues that I
have discovered in myself allowed me to reflect deeply regarding my perception of
others. Adichie spoke on how her childhood was filled with English stories and
how she gained a perspective on their culture through books. Books are truly
powerful storytellers and is often forgotten about in a society where books are
taken for granite. A book in another one of my classes was based on Adichie s idea
of how English stories only told one side of the story; this book explored the lives an
Igbo society and how English stories portrayed them differently than who they
actually were. This proved that I am not alone in making a single story, furthermore...
I have always been the person to want to hear both sides of an argument, therefore,
allowing myself to be impartial. After learning the concept of a single story, I can

Kathryn Stockett s, The Help, introduces two main characters in the novel who
reveal their drastic experiences of the day to day life of an African American
during the early 1960 s. These hard working ladies, Aibileen Clark and Minny,
dedicate and spend their lives taking care of white families and raising their innocent
children. Discrimination played a big role in the society during this era, and was
considered normal; however, these tough and independent women took every day as
a new challenge to look for the the best outcome. In the novel, Kathryn Stockett
interprets nature imagery to symbolize the traumatic experiences and struggles each
black minority undergoes.
Stockett incorporates nature imagery in the book to symbolize the bitterness
which grows internally day by day. Aibileen, one of the most important characters
in the novel, refers to a bitter seed that was nourished inside of her after the horrific
death of her son, Treelore. I feel that bitter seed grow in my chest, the one planted
after Treelore died, (Stockett 14). Since the tragic death, the seed planted inside of
her began flourishing after every time she was degraded for the color of her skin. As
sweet and genuine Aibileen s character is, the racism she experienced from her own
boss and the cruel remarks about her appearance has made Aibileen use this bitterness
in an essential way. As bitter as she was, the seed implanted within Aibileen, giving
her the motivation to prove the white people wrong.

RAT has been a great experience for me, not only benefiting me in ROBLOX, but
actually effecting the way I interact with others. During my time in RAT I can admit,
I was critied in the past, but continued to stay active within the community. I had

RAT has to offer for us.

transportation which would connect them from the Western to Eastern states. The

Transcontinental Railroad could be defined as the most significant change in
America, during the 19th Century. During the years the tracks were being made, the
first settlers began to move westward. Once gold was discovered in these areas,
people started to travel across the nation to find gold in California. Chinese
Immigrants soon began discovering the gold while mining. Traveling overland
before the railroad was completed, took approximently five to six months.
Travelers were through rugged mountains and arid desert. The transcontinental
railroad would make it possible to complete the trip in five days at a cost of $150 for

Going from $1,000 and a five to six month trip, to an $150 and five day trip was

Peer pressure, the social acceptability of drinking, and a desire to escape from
