Cardiff beat Brive but it was a safe knockout game.pdf
1. Cardiff beat Brive but it was a safe knockout game
Cardiff's place in the last 16 of the European Challenge Cup is
secure, but they ended their pool campaign with a 37-24 defeat
at the Bridge.
The Blue and Blacks will play at home in the next round of the
competition, but rugby boss Dai Young will face defeat in south-
west France.
Rhys Priestland gave Cardiff a 3-0 lead but after that it was a
one-sided first half.
2. Brive had threatened in the previous 10 minutes but finally broke
Cardiff's resistance when ex-Gloucester player Motu Matu headed
home from close range for a fine drive.
The hosts won the clash, with the impressive winger Said Hirece
dominating the contest. Cardiff looked vulnerable as the French
outfit got the ball open and a brace from Arthur Bonneval put the
French club on the front foot.
They won the ball quickly and a good goal from Argentina
international Nicolás Sánchez was put into the corner by Mathis
Ferte on the left. A brilliant strike from Brive Sanchez in behind
the Cardiff defense allowed Kevin Fabien to score the third goal.
Sanchez was successful with the conversion which
meant Cardiff 17-3 at the interval. Argentina grabbed three more
points after the break, but Cardiff weren't ready to throw in the
towel just yet.
New Wales signing Mason Grady put Cardiff on the front foot with
a strong performance. Rice then burst onto the ball, after being
brought down by Carew Wales and Teddy Williams.
3. After a big key, the ball went wide for James Botham's converted
try. A haul of 50/22 from Priestland then put the visitors in a
prime attacking position.
James Ratty headed the ball through Tomos Williams
and Priestland added to the ball with the Wales international.
The young lock Williams for Cardiff was in trouble when he was
sent down to make direct contact with Brive's striker's head, thus
Sanchez sealed another three points for the French club.
But Cardiff was not done and when Gradi beat a little less Brive
tackle, Jason pulled out the last defender and put Harry
through. Priestland wants Cardiff to progress.
But Cardiff's hopes of a comeback were dashed when Setareki
Bituniyata combined with Setariki Tuicuvu to try for Brive's bonus
point.
4. England's Wesley Douglas came in the final match of Brive to send
the French club into the last 16 of the Challenge Cup and gave
Cardiff a lot to think about.
