Types of Sports Fans
Professional sports has become one of the most popular industries in the world today. The media
spends billions of dollars on advertisements and teams spend millions of dollars on professional
athletes all for one reason, the fans. The fans ticket sales and merchandise purchases are what keeps
all the sport teams around and prevents professional athletes from losing their jobs. There are three
types of fans in the sports world, average fans, fanatics, and fair weather fans.
Fans that are fanatics are the ones who are diehard and will put their favorite team before almost all
other priorities. Their lives revolve around their favorite team and they will do ... Show more content

Usually they will know all or the majority of the people on their team, but will not know every aspect
about them. This type of fan is the most common and will root on and follow their favorite team, but
their life is not completely consumed by it by any means. Other priorities still come before their sports
team and will not let their favorite team consume all of their time.
The last type of fan is a fair weather fan. This is the least liked fan and these fans irritate many people.
Fair weather fans will like one team one year and switch their favorite team the next year because of
recent success by the other team. These people are not truly sports fans, and will just root for who is
popular or whoever their peers like so they can fit in. Fair weather fans root for teams that they do not
follow because of excitement revolving around a team or because there are some big names on the
team that they have actually heard of. These people will like a team, but will not follow them very
closely and may only attend one or two sporting events a year at the most. Fair weather fans will know
the names of the star people on their team, but will not know the majority of their favorite team.
Usually they will not have much merchandise with their favorite team on it either because they switch
teams so much that they do not have tome to accumulate many goods with their team on them.

Analysis Of Brent Hartinger s The
Author Brent Hartinger has written an interesting novel that explores the duality of man in reference
to an individual s outward appearance compared to their inward appearance. A strong point of this
novel is Middlebrow s willingness to explore new and exciting things, such as going The Geography
Club A.K.A (The Gay Straight Alliance). A weak point of this novel is when Middlebrow meets
random strangers online and engages in sexual activity. Teen s who are searching for their own
identity may find Middlebrow s tale of not only discovering himself, but elevating himself extremely
interesting. The plot of two teens hiding not only their true identity, but an entire Gay Straight Alliance
club from their outside world, until they are labeled outcasts, proves to be the most interesting aspect
of this novel. Although there are numerous good role models within this novel, I believe that Min s
selfless actions of forming the The Geography Club to offer a safe haven for homosexual students
establish her as the novel s true role model. Since this novel deals with heavy drinking and extreme
sexuality exploration, this novel should only be read by fifteen year olds to adults.

Since 1977, the anti bribery provisions of the FCPA have applied to all U.S. persons and certain
foreign issuers of securities. With the enactment of certain amendments in 1998, the anti bribery
provisions of the FCPA now also apply to foreign firms and persons who cause, directly or through
agents, an act in furtherance of such a corrupt payment to take place within the territory of the United
States. The FCPA also requires companies whose securities are listed in the United States to meet its
accounting provisions. See 15 U.S.C. § 78m. These accounting provisions, which were designed to

Roman Skepticism
Skepticism
Skepticism is the Western philosophical tradition that maintains that human beings can never arrive at
any kind of certain knowledge. Originating in Greece in the middle of the fourth century BC,
skepticism and its derivatives are based on the following principles:
There is no such thing as certainty in human knowledge.
All human knowledge is only probably true, that is, true most of the time, or not true.
Several non Western cultures have skeptical traditions, particularly Buddhist philosophy, but properly
speaking, skepticism refers only to a Greek philosophical tradition and its Greek, Roman, and
European derivatives.
The school of Skeptic philosophers were called the Skeptikoi in Greece. The word is ... Show more

While Socrates never claimed that knowledge is impossible, still, at his death, he never claimed to
have discovered any piece of knowledge whatsoever.
After its introduction into Greek culture at the end of the fourth century BC, skepticism influenced
nearly all other Greek philosophies. Both Hellenistic and Roman philosophies took it as a given that
certain knowledge was impossible; the focus of Greek and Roman philosophy, then, turned to
probable knowledge, that is, knowledge that is true most of the time.
Christianity, however, introduced a dilemma into Greek and Roman philosophies that were primarily
based on skeptical principles. In many ways, the philosophy of Christianity, which insisted on an
absolute knowledge of the divine and of ethics, did not fit the Greek and Roman skeptical emphasis on
probable knowledge. Paul of Tarsus, one of the original founders of Christianity, answered this
question simply: the knowledge of the Romans and Greeks, that is, human knowledge, is the
knowledge of fools. Knowledge that rejects human reasoning, which, after all, leads to skepticism, is
the knowledge of the wise. Christianity at its inception, then, had a strong anti rational perspective.
This did not, however, make the skeptical problem go away. Much of the history of early Christian
philosophy is an attempt to paste Greek and Roman philosophical methods and questions onto

Entrepreneurship in the Brazilian offshoring industry Essay
Case 1: Entrepreneurship in the Brazilian offshoring industry
Brazil is one of the nations included in BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, and China). In the past, Brazil s
outsourcing industry has been the smallest of the four BRIC nations. This is very surprising due to the
close proximity to the United States and the current trend of near shoring . However, due to recent
governmental backing and inflows of capital Brazil has begun to improve and could possibly overtake
Russia, India and China in the offshoring industry. The most promising sector in Brazil is their IT
sector.

Access to Research Development
One reason for Brazil s success is due to their rapid spending in science and government incentives.
However, concerns over rising inflation and an overheated economy has led Brazil s newly elected
President to implement across the board government spending cuts, totaling close to $30 billion.
Resulting from the cut was a $577 million reduction in funding for the Ministry of Science
Technology, which was about 11% of the previous year s budget. This lack of R D spending could
become a weakness for the future of Brazil[4].
In response to the growing concern, Brazil s government established a new panel to study the future of
science in the country. The panel will draw up long‑term plans for sustaining R D within the
country[4].
Technology
In IT technology Brazil is well staffed with its 250,000 IT professionals, 23,000 annual IT graduates,
and infrastructure capable of supporting double digit growth. According to the Brazilian Association
of Information Technology and Communication Companies (BRASSCOM), Brazil s offshore
outsourcing market hit $1.4 billion in 2008, rising 75 percent in a single year. An October, 2009 report
from Gartner states that Brazil s economic footprint combined with having the largest domestic IT
consumption in all of Latin America, as well as international recognition as one of the most promising
and rapidly emerging economies, makes it a natural

Special Interest Personal Statement
My goal in applying to the Master s in Education with a concentration in Special Interest is to expand
upon the skills and knowledge I have acquired through my work in the fields of education and social
justice in order to effectively foster a sense of agency among those in the adult learner population,
particularly those availing themselves of programs offered through public institutions, such as
libraries. The flexibility of the Special Interest concentration, as well as the program s wide offering of
courses available, specifically those that examine issues of culture and equity, will allow me to tailor
my studies so as to gain new strategies and develop deeper insight into how to best effectively
facilitate adult learning.

through the incarceration of my own child) I have insight into the unseen needs those who were
formally incarcerated. Theses experience have served me well. Working the Berkeley Reads Adult

Electroconvulsive Theraphy Should Be Used in Psychiatric...
ECT Should Be Used in Psychiatric Treatment
In contemporary psychiatry worldwide, Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) continues to be useful.
However, researchers, the general public and practitioners have not yet understood this therapy.
Controversies continue to surround the application of this therapy, especially the long term
consequences of its legality and use in the management of some severe major depression,
schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and mental illness. Particularly, a few mental health service users
report adverse effects that are associated with ECT for instance, severe memory loss. Some
researchers claim that the Electroconvulsive therapy is the utmost controversial treatment in the field
of psychiatry. Arguably, ECT should be used in physiatrist treatment.
Randomized Controlled Trial (RCTs) demonstrates that the use of ECT is effectual when treating
major depression. However, it quickly resolves all mental problems. When controlled in a setting that
is safe, the treatment becomes comfortable. Some researchers argue that Genuine ECT is more
effective in treating acute treatment caused by depression rather than sham ECT. In addition, ECT is
also more effective in comparison with standard antidepressant medication treatment (Sienaert 8).
Clinical trials that compare ECT with optimal pharmacotherapy are yet to be conducted. There is no
evidence that demonstrates the ECT effectiveness in the treatment of Schizophrenia. Genuine ECT has
been more effective in

The And I Do Not Bode Well Together
Kayaking and I do not bode well together. I despise the icy water that leaks into the tiny boat along
with everything else involved in this activity. Relentlessly trying to remain in my kayak as the freezing
cold water sprays my face no matter which way I turn, I watch my fellow grade 8 friends as they too
struggle to stay inside. After hopping into the wobbly kayak, burning cold water already spritzing my
face, I could tell the next 45 minutes would be absolutely dreadful. Paddling around the same section
of lake, my hands are fully numbed by the cold and I am bored to bits. Eagerly waiting for the camp
instructor to whistle us back to shore, I give up on paddling all together and bob along the water.

Crashing into the shallow waters, screaming as the cold hits and stings my entire body, I immerse

water, I try making my way back to shore, however, water fills my boots and slows me down. There is
so much water inside my boots that the cold is getting the best of me so I lunge towards land, losing a

Informative Essay On Needle Abuse
We Know in this Modern World everyone one is finding a way to get relief from their stress. Their
many ways to cope with it, however that include good ways and bad ways. Good ways Would
basically include going on a vacation or spending time with their family and bad ways would include
taking synthetic drugs that ultimately would start the destruction of their lives. There are also many
harmful ways people take drugs which might even put a scar on their lives forever or even give them
some chronic diseases that would take their life. One of that phenomenon is exchanging needles or
using the same needle over and over again while doing drugs. In order to prevent chronic diseases like
HIV and AIDS, in some countries their government has started a program called a needle exchange
where drug users get the new and clean needles for their drug use. Basically, Needle and syringe
programs (NSPs) are a type of harm diminution imagination that provides clean needles and syringes
to people who have an addiction to inject drugs (referred to as PWID) to reduce the chances of getting
the diseases of HIV and other harmful blood borne viruses (hepatitis B and C). This Needle Exchange
program has helped and identified many drug users from chronic diseases. The World Health
Organization (WHO) suggest the distribution of 200 sterile needles and syringes per drug injector per
year, in order to tellingly tackle HIV transmission via this route. There are many arguments for and
against the needle

Meditation Analysis
Before I take this class, I know that meditation is just sitting on the floor, close eyes and meditating.

Standard Scores
2. What is a standard score?
A standard score is a scores that enables us to refer to the performance of an individual pupil in
relation to the whole population where the mean is 100 and the standard deviation is usually 15. It also
allows schools to base their assessments per school year. This is due to standarised scores taking into
account the age of the pupil. A pupil in year 9 that has a date of birth of September would generally be
expected to get a higher raw score than a pupil born in July, both pupils being in the same academic
year. However, when calculating the standard score the age will be taken into account. This ensures
that relevant interventions/arrangements can be put in place for pupils based on the standard score.
3. What scores are considered to fall within the average range?
Standardised scores that are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One standard deviation is usually represented by 15 points from the mean. 2 standard deviations are
calculated usually by 30 points from the mean.
One standard deviation away from the mean in either direction represents around 68% of the
population that took that test. Two standard deviations away from the mean represent 95% of the
population.
8. What is reliability? What reliability should we choose when selecting a test?
Reliability of a test is measured by how accurate and consistent that test is when measuring a target
skill. For a test to be reliable it must have reliability of 0.8 or over. A reliable test should give us a
consistent score every time it is completed, i.e. if it a pupil was to complete the same test that was
delivered by 2 different assessors on 2 different days, a reliable test should still give us the same
outcome on both tests on both days.
9. What is validity? Name and describe the three mains types of validity.
Validity is a measurement of how well a test measures the skill that needs to be

Research Paper On Arthur Eddington
Arthur S. Eddington was an English astronomer, born on Dec. 28, 1882, at Kendal, United Kingdom.
His father Arthur Henry Eddington was a school teacher, died when Eddington was just two years old.
His family had to move to Weston, where he was raised. From 1893 to 1898, Arthur Eddington had
attended Brynmelyn School, where Eddington quickly distinguished himself, mainly in mathematics
and English literature. As a child Eddington was very intelligent, and by his own account had
mastered the multiplication table before he could read. He received his bachelor s degree in 1902 from
Owens College, Manchester, and later he immediately proceeded to Trinity College, Cambridge. At
Cambridge Eddington placed first in the mathematical examination in his second year, for him it was
an unprecedented achievement. According to NY Times, In 1905 he took his bachelor s degree from
Cambridge University; in 1907 he became Smith s Prize winner and was elected a fellow of Trinity

The summer of 2017, a couple months before my senior year, presented an opportunity that initiated

Why Is Constitutional Law Important To The Development Of...
According to the development of British Constitution, Parliament gained its power over the monarchy
in 1688, meaning that under UK constitutional law, it is recognised that parliament has the power to
enact, revoke or alter such, and any, law as it sees fit. The Human Rights Act (HRA) 1998 also
reaffirms this by saying that its recognition of the power of parliament to make primary legislation
that is incompatible with the rights provided under the European Convention on Human Rights
(ECHR). Even though judges must abide by the will of Parliament, there are some cases were statutes
have to be amended for a number of reasons and in this essay these will be discussed. In order to show
why same cases need to be amended, the three main rules used which include the Literal, Golden and
Mischief rule will be discussed. A number of different cases will be discussed in order to better
interpret these rules. Next the different interpretations and presumptions used by judges will be
explained. Lastly a conclusion about amending statutes will be discussed and why this is more
beneficial to the courts.
Case law involves using legal precedent in order to solve cases that have come to court, refers to the
creation and refinement of law in the course of judicial decisions. Since the doctrine of binding
precedent, or stare decisis, lies at the heart of the English legal system, this means that when judges

Analysis Of Lemony Snicket s Series Of Unfortunate Events
Reader Response
I first read Lemony Snicket s Series of Unfortunate Events when I was 10 years old. Having little
patience, I planned to just skim through but found myself immediately immersed in the story and the
writing style. The author uses clever techniques to appeal to both children and older readers, which
allowed me to remain engaged with the text. Snicket warns that, if you are interested in books with
happy endings, you would be better off reading some other book. I found myself attracted to the
gothic elements and darker nature of the text. I found it to be uniquely different to the traditional fairy
tales with a cliché happily ever after . A Series of Unfortunate Events has no typical happily ever after,

As a child, I often felt frustrated that adults would not always take me seriously. I felt empowered by
the idea that perhaps I too was capable of solving my own problems as a self reliant and independent
being.
Snicket is a clever and humorous narrator. He assists the reader with more advanced words, explaining
them in their given context. As a young reader, this was very educational and helpful and allowed me
to further understand and enjoy the series. As an older reader, I came to realise that he did this in a
comedic way. For example, Snicket writes, It is now necessary for me to use the rather hackneyed
phrase meanwhile, back at the ranch. The word hackneyed here means used by so, so many writers
that by the time Lemony Snicket uses it, it is a tiresome cliché. Snicket also introduces children to
important concepts and ideas. He notes, your initial opinion of things may change over time, and the
children knew, as I m sure you know, that the worst surroundings can be tolerated if the people in
them are interesting and kind. He also addressed more serious issues, acting as a moral guide, but
ensured these issues were not too overwhelming by maintaining a sense of humour. He writes, stealing
is not excusable if, for instance, you are in a museum and you decide that a certain painting would
look better in your house... But if you were very very hungry, and you had no way of obtaining
money, it might be excusable to grab the painting, take it

Greeks and Africans Americans
Native American religions are very closely connected to the land in which Native Americans dwell
and the supernatural. While there are many different Native American religious practices, most
address the following areas of supernatural concern: an omnipresent, invisible universal force,
pertaining to the three life crises of birth, puberty, and death , spirits, visions, the medicine people and
communal ceremony. Greek religion encompasses the collection of beliefs and rituals practiced in
ancient Greece in the form of both popular public religion and cult practices. These different groups
varied enough for it to be possible to speak of Greek religions or cults in the plural, though most of
them shared similarities. Africa ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first arrivals were young boys bought by American naval officers and philanthropists on the
Turkish slave block. They were sent to the United States for education and freedom and many
distinguished themselves as teachers or naval officers.
It was not until the turn of the century that the yearly Greek immigrants numbered a thousand or more.
They were mostly young men and boys escaping poverty by sailing towards the bright light of
America. Some came to avoid the compulsory three year military service in the Greek army where a
peasant youth could seldom rise above a menial. A great many came from those parts of Greece still
under Ottoman domination which conscripted Greek youths into the dreaded Turkish infantry.
From Ellis Island they made their way about the streets of New York, searching for someone with the
same ethnic characteristics as their own who could help them find work. Sometimes they wandered
about, lost in the city s maze, until a labor agent, through signs, offered them work in mills, factories,
or road gangs elsewhere. The more fortunate ones, who knew countrymen already working in the
textile cities, went directly to them. But some of these men could not adapt to the noise and confusions
of the factories and their spirit of adventure led them to climb freights and travel over the plains and
mountains to the west.

Society As An Outsiders
In William Faulkner s A Rose for Emily and Sherwood Anderson s Hands, both authors present main
characters who is isolated in their respective societies. In Faulkner s work, Emily is an outsider
because she chooses to remove herself from mainstream society by not interacting with other people.
Similarly, in Anderson s work, Wing Biddlebaum chooses to remove himself from society since he has
been falsely accused of being a child molester. In this way, both characters are outsiders in their
communities by choosing to remove themselves of their own free will. First, there are several types of
outsider based on different reasons. A person who decides to take himself away from the society, or
one who different from most people can be said to be an outsider. a person not belonging to a
particular group, set, party, etc. An outsider can also mean someone who is not within boundary or
enclosure. a person not belonging to a particular group, set, party, etc. (OutsiderDictionary.com. Web.
Pg.1). Though the dictionary has already described what an outsider meant, an outsider can also be
when one is trying really hard to succeed at a particular thing but is having difficulty doing that; like
in the case of a student who is having difficulty in passing a course while most of the students seem to
be having no problem with the class. Such student can be said to be an outsider. While this is the case
for students, a homeless is said to be an outsider too. There are various kinds of

Components Of The Worm Drive Gearbox
2.0 Component Analysis The worm drive gearbox is comprised of a worm screw running off the input
shaft and engaging the worm wheel perpendicularly1. Bonfiglioli states in their quality standards that
they are committed to supplying effective products and go on to say they will never compromise on
safety, compliance or quality2. As a business, it is in their best interests to do so as cost effectively as
possible; keeping both these points in mind will help to analyse the various parts of the gearbox and
assess possible materials used, as well as manufacturing processes performed. 2.1 Worm shaft 2.1.1
Function The input shaft has a keyway cut which enables the motor to rotate the worm; this in turn
results in the worm wheel rotating due to contact between the worm thread and the teeth of the worm
wheel3. In order for the gearbox to continuously perform this function smoothly and efficiently over
time it is important that the worm shaft s material is carefully considered to avoid the three principle
factors that will influence performance1. 2.1.2 Materials With the worm screw being in constant
contact with the worm wheel, there has to be consideration of wear due to friction when selecting the
material. In order to avoid amounts of wear that will be detrimental to performance, the shaft s
material must have a high surface hardness1. It s important that this is achieved without the hardening
of the entire thread because this will result in the material becoming more brittle. A

In this report, we examine the market for streaming music through the internet. I discuss five
successful companies and possible segments for each of them that solidify the growing market for
internet radio. Specifically, the customer segment of females who are teens to their early 20 s who are
mid to high class college students would be targeted from Spotify. The beginnings of the new service
have started less than a decade ago but has already been a huge factor of how people listen to their
music. Instead of buying physical, hard copies of an artist s album, people either buy the song digitally
or now use a specific software that will allow them to stream and listen to any song they want for free.
The use of applications on smartphones also aid in this world wide domination of internet radio.
Normally, the trial versions of this software will include advertisements by companies who pay the
streaming music companies. If someone has an aversion to all of the commercials, there is a monthly
payment subscription where no advertisements will interrupt the streaming of their music. One of the
most powerful forms of art and expression has gone digital. There is no secret that music can influence
millions. The music industry has always contributed to society s biggest icons and created revenues
that exceed lottery numbers. Key players of this new wave of streaming music would be Spotify,
Pandora, Apple Music, SoundCloud, and Tidal. These five

Flowers For Algernon By Daniel Keys
To begin with, the text, Flowers for Algernon, by Daniel Keys, shows an abundant amount of
examples when it comes to asking others for guidance or lack thereof. The story follows a man named
Charlie, a mentally impaired 37 year old who has decided to undergo a newly tested surgery,
performed by two neurosurgeons, Dr. Strauss and Dr. Nemur, that will theoretically increase his
intelligence. The surgery has already been tested on other animals, like Algernon the mouse. Although
the surgery initially seemed to be successful resulting in a huge peak in Charlie s intelligence, these
effects were temporary. The lasting outcome of the surgery leaves Charlie in ruins; with Charlie losing
his job, one of his closest friends Algernon the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Strauss said that Dr. Nemur was more interested in the Chair of Psychology at Princeton than he was
in the experiment. Dr. Nemur said that Dr. Strauss was nothing but an opportunist who was trying to
ride to glory on his coattails (295). This argument between the two doctors proves that Dr. Nemur
especially was only invested in the surgery for his own personal gain and not for the benefit of
Charlie. Because he was so eager to get his results out to the world and so paranoid that someone may
discover a way to complete the surgery before him, he decided to rush into the surgery and didn t take
the guidance given to him by Dr. Strauss who said that they should wait. Instead, he goes ahead with
the surgery and ruins Charlie s life. REASONING? Additionally, we witness Algernon s strange
behavior which is concluded as a side effect of the surgery. May 23 It happened today. Algernon bit
me. I visited the lab to see him as I do occasionally, and when I took him out of his cage, he snapped
at my hand. I put him back and watched him for a while. He was unusually disturbed and vicious.

decreased. Everyone is upset about what this may mean. May 25 They re all pretending that Algernon
s behavior is not necessarily significant for me. But it s hard to hide the fact that some of the other
animals who were used in this experiment are showing strange behavior. I ve got to find the

Robert Borden Analysis
Tommy Douglas, Pierre Trudeau, and Robert Borden
Borden, Douglas, and Trudeau all remain resilient in the face of political obstacles under their
leadership, kept Canada as a united nation. After their involvement in local communities, Borden,
Douglas, and Trudeau reach Canada s national community. Borden was elected into politics through
his partner, which soon changed his lifestyle causing him to be the prime minister. As a staunch
imperialist opposing Sir Wilfred Laurier he spoke up for what was right and always brought the best
for Canada. Later on being elected to the upper hand he took matters into own hand and prepared for
World War 1. Tommy Douglas knew since his severe injury with his leg that he had to do something

Naked Egg Lab Experiment
Naked Egg Lab
Frances Jose
Redmond High School Biology, Period 3
Mrs. Sinclair
7 November 2014
Introduction
The objective of the Naked Egg Lab is to soak the egg in a solution and determine if that solution is
isotonic, hypertonic, or hypotonic in relation to the egg. A solution is a mixture of two or more
substances in which the molecules of the substances are evenly distributed (Miller/Levine 2000). The
substances in a solution are solutes, the substance that is dissolved (Miller/Levine 2000), and solvents,
the substance in which the solute dissolves (Miller/Levine 2000). In this case, the egg will be put in a
salt water solution, where salt is the solute and water is the solvent. This lab is looking for three
different types of solutions; isotonic, hypertonic, and hypotonic. An isotonic solution is when the
concentration of two solutions is the same (Miller/Levine 2000). When a solution has a higher
concentration of solutes than the solution on the other side of the membrane, it is hypertonic.
Hypotonic solutions are the opposite, and have a lesser concentration of solutes than the solution on
the other side of the membrane.
Diffusion is the process by which molecules tend to move from an area where they are more
concentrated to an area ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After the shell is finally gone, the egg will be placed in the salt water solution. Since only water can
move in and out of the egg, the semipermeable membrane allows for an exploration for the concepts
of diffusion and osmosis (Ryczkowski 2014). If the solution is hypotonic, the egg s mass (quantitative
data) will increase because the water will pass from an area with high concentration (water), to an area
with low concentration (egg). It is predicted that the egg will gain mass and look larger (qualitative
data) because of

Myths Of The Knife
The knife is one of the oldest tools used by humanity so it should come as no surprise that there are
almost as many myths about knives as there are types of knives. These myths are not just some old
folk tales told around a camp fire but myths that are actually thought to be true in the present day time.
There are myths about how to care for knives and myths about how to use them. They all have
something that sticks in the mind or they would not have lasted long enough to become myths. Any
buyer looking to purchase knives should know why these myths are false so that you can make wise
buying decisions when purchasing your very own knife.
Myth 1: Some Knives don t need to be sharpened
Some manufacturers give absurd claims that their knives ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When you get injured by a knife, it means you got cut buy it in some form or another. Thinking like
this would mean that knife that does not cut well is less likely to injure the user. The problem with this
thinking is that dull knives require more force to actually complete the cutting action, which in turn
makes the user more likely to lose control and accidentally injure themselves because the knife went
somewhere it should not have gone.
Myth 3: Harder Blades Stay Sharp Longer
While hardness definitely is a factor in how sharp an edge a blade can hold, there is thing as a blade
being too hard. The problem is that blades that are only hard also are brittle and hence prone to
breaking. Brittle blades can easily chip, losing their original edge and so become jagged and dull. If
your blade will last long then it needs to be resilient. Hardness alone is not enough.
Myth 4: Giving a Knife as a Gift Severs Relationships
This is one of the oldest and dumbest knife myths that are still around. The idea behind this thinking is
that because a knife is a cutting implement, giving one to someone means that the giver is cutting the
ties that bind people (them) together. Needless to say, there is no grain of truth to this myth; It is a
perfect example of the kind of magical thinking that symbols can have a direct effect in the real

It was not until 1901 that Mr. Walgreen was able to put together enough money for the down payment
on his pharmacy. He wanted to buy the pharmacy that one of the top pharmacists Isaac Blood owned.
However, Mr. Blood wasn t that eager to sell to Mr. Walgreen. Although, they had a good working
relationship and Mr. Walgreen was a trusted employee, Mr. Blood was skeptical to sell. Mr. Blood
decided to sell at $6,000 instead of the original selling price of $4,000. Mr. Walgreen thought the new
selling price was a little steep for his pockets, but he decided to take a loan a buy it any way.
Walgreen s drugstore was located in Barrett s Hotel at Cottage Grove and Bowen Ave on Chicago s
Southside. The neighborhood was prospering but Walgreen s wasn t. Mr. Walgreen decided to add
brighter lights, expand the aisles (since the other pharmacies were dull and cramped), and add variety
like pots and pans (unheard of in a drugstore. The quality of Walgreen s pharmaceutical compounds

dramatic change Mr. Walgreen instituted was a lever of service and personal attention unequaled by
virtually any other pharmacy in Chicago. And this was exemplified by Walgreen s famous Two

Marie Maynard Daly
Throughout Gender and Race in the Physical Sciences, I have been struck by how rarely in STEM we
shed a light on the women of color that already exist and thrive in the sciences. Often, when we
discuss diversity in the sciences, we only discuss it in the frame of a problem. More specifically, we
tend to focus on the problem of there not being enough of these women in the field. As a result of the
lack of attention paid to pioneering women in STEM, many young people of all backgrounds are
inclined to believe that there are no women of color doing great things in the field that there are no
role models. With this paper, and an on campus event to be held in the spring, I hope to challenge
people s assumptions about what a scientist looks like, and inspire people through a discussion of
innovative women of color.

Unlike Many Poets Around The World, Gerard Manley Hopkins
Unlike many poets around the world, Gerard Manley Hopkins follows a very unique style of poetry.
Instead of using the same old style of writing that every poet uses, Gerard created his own way to
express his thoughts and feelings. Using a unique method, Gerard could write poems that became
extremely popular starting in the late nineteenth century. In Gerard s The Windhover, he uses various
symbols, rhetorical devices, and strategies to help support his thoughts and to help strengthen his
argument that something like a bird, that one sees every day, could be totally, mind blowingly amazing
if looked at the correct way. Throughout the poem, Hopkins is describing a certain animal, the
windhover. The windhover is a bird with this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Buckle is the verb in the previous sentence, which is either a fastening such as of a belt, or when
something collapses all at once, such as the buckling of the knees. In either definition, a unification
takes place. With this unification, a fire occurs, which is like the crucifixion of Christ, though not as
grave. Along with the beautiful descriptions Hopkins illustrates this poem with is the structure of the
poem itself. First, this poem is identified as a Petrarchan sonnet, where the fourteen lines are split into
an octet with eight lines and a sestet with six lines. These types of sonnets are usually structured with
the octet presenting some sort of problem and the sestet offering a solution to that problem. The rhyme
scheme of a Petrarchan sonnet rhymes: ABBAABBA CDE CDE. However, Hopkins decided to use
the pattern CDC CDC instead of CDE CDE. Starting at the beginning of the poem and looking at the
end of each line, all the A s are king, wing, swing, and thing. All the B s are riding, striding, gliding,
and hiding. Hopkins uses the word kingdom in the first line but then spreads the second part of the
word to the second line to create king rhyming with A s scheme. If looked at closer, the B rhymes
almost rhyme with the A rhymes, however, all the B sounds end in ing. This use of ing with the B
rhymes help identify that the bird is in the air right now. In the sestet, the rhyme scheme is easier to

A Seminar On Education And Poverty
In September of 2013, my sister passed away, leaving our family with more questions than answers
and challenges that parallel with heartbreak. As a freshman trying to find my way at the University of
Georgia, it seemed that I was going backwards compared to my peers and my grieving put more of a
strain on my will to continue my studies. Pursuing any actions for bettering myself or my counterparts
tended to feel overwhelming. Feelings of loneliness engulfed my state of mind, but what was most
unbearable was my realization that I had no idea of how I was going to overcome this. I usually have a
plan of what I would like to accomplish and who I strive to become, but at this stage of life, I felt as
lost as ever. As months passed, I had the opportunity to attend a seminar on education and poverty.
Although I was not interested in education, I attended to gain information for a class project. Through
this seminar, I found the beginning of passion that I did not know I possessed. The presenters exposed
the significant fact that students often times do not finish school due to their lacking in resources to
finish. These self and material doubts affect students at every level of education. While focusing on
my own challenges, I lost sight of the present, daunting challenges that others, whether they be my
peers or younger students, face on a daily basis. Pity for these other students had not crossed my mind,
but rather, an urgency to take action. Students must work so relentlessly

Symbolism In Raskolnikov s Nightmare
He had not an instant more to lose. He pulled the axe out completely, swung it with both arms,
scarcely conscious of himself, and almost without effort, almost mechanically, brought the blunt side
down on her head... Then with all his strength he dealt her another and another blow with the blunt
side, and on the same spot (Dostoyevsky 77). Relating the following passage to previous events in the
book, a symbolic connection can be made between the murder to Raskolnikov s nightmare (55 59).
Whenever Raskolnikov is out on a walk, he thinks of disturbing circumstances, only to come across
something beautiful in his eyes. Horses are generally described to be both majestic and beautiful,
which would apply to Raskolnikov s attraction towards them. Horses are also often used to symbolize
freedom and strength, which is what he vaguely hopes for. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

community (as displayed whenever Raskolnikov was in the bar). During a certain bar visit,
Raskolnikov overhears a conversation that basically brings up murder, as the old woman served no
real purpose to society and would make things better if she were to disappear. Raskolnikov proceeds
to construct a plan of action to kill the old woman with an

Symbolism In Stephen King s Movie It
Due to how interested I am with this captivating film, I once again decided to research a review on the
movie IT directed by Andy Muschiettie. Specifically looking for an article discussing symbolism I
stumbled upon Stephen King s It is the rare monster movie with too much monster written by Tahsa
Robinson. Collectively, the passage discusses many elements of symbols in the film, but ultimately
leads back to how the title monster makes appearance too often (Robinson). However, I disagree with
this statement because the creature is presented to remind the audience that It is always there;
terrorizing its prey before consumption as one would season a piece of meat before a meal. This
directing style of presenting the monster in the beginning and often throughout is different from that
of other movie that keep the monster hidden to build suspense and fear. Having It on screen in
multiple scenes allows terror to build for the victims or, in the case of the film, for the victims to
develop bravery in the face of fear. I do agree with the author s analysis on the aspects of the film and
the symbols presented to the audience. In particular, I whole heartedly agree with what she states
about one of the adolescent characters: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Happy New Year s Eve everyone!
Now going back to my previous blog, I promised to start off each blog with a story from my life, so
here goes nothing.
Now there was a time where, we were all kids. For some of you that might have been ten years ago,
and for others of you, that might have been last year aha! There was a time when I was about 7 years
old. Now, after my parents divorced, my mother, my sisters and I lived in an apartment complex. My
younger sister, Alexis (age 6), and I were quick to make friends with our neighbors, a girl named
Madison (age 6), and her younger brother named Parker (age 5). They were a little younger than us,
but they were just as animated and active as we were. Now, Parker was quite the character, I would ...

All of a sudden, Parker loses control of the bike and starts to head down the hill. Alexis immediately
jumps off of the bike, and tells Parker to jump off, with Parker screaming, I can t leave my Harley!
Parker ends up at the bottom of the hill in the bushes of thorns crying, but still trying to push his
Harley up the hill. Madison runs home, and their parents come and takes Parker s Harley out of the
bushes and up the hill. His parents were very understanding when we told them what happened, but
Parker goes to say, I m not sure I can marry that gal after this!
Now thinking back on this story, I couldn t do anything except laugh! This story definitely put a lot of
things into perspective for me, when I relate it to my life experiences now. This story allows me think
about how I will approach things, going into the New Year. How I will approach conflict, how I will
approach drama, how I approach negativity. When thinking about those things, it gave me three main
points on how I can better myself, but also better the core of my heart.
1. Don t treat people how they treat you.
 Going into 2016, this being one of the most important things you need to remember to grasp onto.
This was one of the biggest lessons I ve ran into this past year on multiple occasions. Romans 12:18

  • 2. Types of Sports Fans Blake Feldmann Orlet English 101 OL01D 16 June 2010 Types of Sports Fans Professional sports has become one of the most popular industries in the world today. The media spends billions of dollars on advertisements and teams spend millions of dollars on professional athletes all for one reason, the fans. The fans ticket sales and merchandise purchases are what keeps all the sport teams around and prevents professional athletes from losing their jobs. There are three types of fans in the sports world, average fans, fanatics, and fair weather fans. Fans that are fanatics are the ones who are diehard and will put their favorite team before almost all other priorities. Their lives revolve around their favorite team and they will do ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Usually they will know all or the majority of the people on their team, but will not know every aspect about them. This type of fan is the most common and will root on and follow their favorite team, but their life is not completely consumed by it by any means. Other priorities still come before their sports team and will not let their favorite team consume all of their time. The last type of fan is a fair weather fan. This is the least liked fan and these fans irritate many people. Fair weather fans will like one team one year and switch their favorite team the next year because of recent success by the other team. These people are not truly sports fans, and will just root for who is popular or whoever their peers like so they can fit in. Fair weather fans root for teams that they do not follow because of excitement revolving around a team or because there are some big names on the team that they have actually heard of. These people will like a team, but will not follow them very closely and may only attend one or two sporting events a year at the most. Fair weather fans will know the names of the star people on their team, but will not know the majority of their favorite team. Usually they will not have much merchandise with their favorite team on it either because they switch teams so much that they do not have tome to accumulate many goods with their team on them. • 3. Analysis Of Brent Hartinger s The Author Brent Hartinger has written an interesting novel that explores the duality of man in reference to an individual s outward appearance compared to their inward appearance. A strong point of this novel is Middlebrow s willingness to explore new and exciting things, such as going The Geography Club A.K.A (The Gay Straight Alliance). A weak point of this novel is when Middlebrow meets random strangers online and engages in sexual activity. Teen s who are searching for their own identity may find Middlebrow s tale of not only discovering himself, but elevating himself extremely interesting. The plot of two teens hiding not only their true identity, but an entire Gay Straight Alliance club from their outside world, until they are labeled outcasts, proves to be the most interesting aspect of this novel. Although there are numerous good role models within this novel, I believe that Min s selfless actions of forming the The Geography Club to offer a safe haven for homosexual students establish her as the novel s true role model. Since this novel deals with heavy drinking and extreme sexuality exploration, this novel should only be read by fifteen year olds to adults. Awards: N/A Challenges: University Place school official decided to remove The Geography Club from the district s library shelves after parents complained. Superintendent Patti Banks banned The Geography Club, saying she was alarmed by the romanticized partial of a teen meeting a stranger at night in a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Roman Skepticism Skepticism Skepticism is the Western philosophical tradition that maintains that human beings can never arrive at any kind of certain knowledge. Originating in Greece in the middle of the fourth century BC, skepticism and its derivatives are based on the following principles: There is no such thing as certainty in human knowledge. All human knowledge is only probably true, that is, true most of the time, or not true. Several non Western cultures have skeptical traditions, particularly Buddhist philosophy, but properly speaking, skepticism refers only to a Greek philosophical tradition and its Greek, Roman, and European derivatives. The school of Skeptic philosophers were called the Skeptikoi in Greece. The word is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While Socrates never claimed that knowledge is impossible, still, at his death, he never claimed to have discovered any piece of knowledge whatsoever. After its introduction into Greek culture at the end of the fourth century BC, skepticism influenced nearly all other Greek philosophies. Both Hellenistic and Roman philosophies took it as a given that certain knowledge was impossible; the focus of Greek and Roman philosophy, then, turned to probable knowledge, that is, knowledge that is true most of the time. Christianity, however, introduced a dilemma into Greek and Roman philosophies that were primarily based on skeptical principles. In many ways, the philosophy of Christianity, which insisted on an absolute knowledge of the divine and of ethics, did not fit the Greek and Roman skeptical emphasis on probable knowledge. Paul of Tarsus, one of the original founders of Christianity, answered this question simply: the knowledge of the Romans and Greeks, that is, human knowledge, is the knowledge of fools. Knowledge that rejects human reasoning, which, after all, leads to skepticism, is the knowledge of the wise. Christianity at its inception, then, had a strong anti rational perspective. This did not, however, make the skeptical problem go away. Much of the history of early Christian philosophy is an attempt to paste Greek and Roman philosophical methods and questions onto ... Entrepreneurship in the Brazilian offshoring industry Essay Case 1: Entrepreneurship in the Brazilian offshoring industry Brazil is one of the nations included in BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, and China). In the past, Brazil s outsourcing industry has been the smallest of the four BRIC nations. This is very surprising due to the close proximity to the United States and the current trend of near shoring . However, due to recent governmental backing and inflows of capital Brazil has begun to improve and could possibly overtake Russia, India and China in the offshoring industry. Access to Research Development One reason for Brazil s success is due to their rapid spending in science and government incentives. However, concerns over rising inflation and an overheated economy has led Brazil s newly elected President to implement across the board government spending cuts, totaling close to $30 billion. Resulting from the cut was a $577 million reduction in funding for the Ministry of Science Technology, which was about 11% of the previous year s budget. This lack of R D spending could become a weakness for the future of Brazil[4]. In response to the growing concern, Brazil s government established a new panel to study the future of science in the country. The panel will draw up long‑term plans for sustaining R D within the country[4]. Technology In IT technology Brazil is well staffed with its 250,000 IT professionals, 23,000 annual IT graduates, and infrastructure capable of supporting double digit growth. ECT Should Be Used in Psychiatric Treatment In contemporary psychiatry worldwide, Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) continues to be useful. However, researchers, the general public and practitioners have not yet understood this therapy. Controversies continue to surround the application of this therapy, especially the long term consequences of its legality and use in the management of some severe major depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and mental illness. Particularly, a few mental health service users report adverse effects that are associated with ECT for instance, severe memory loss. Some researchers claim that the Electroconvulsive therapy is the utmost controversial treatment in the field of psychiatry. Arguably, ECT should be used in physiatrist treatment. Randomized Controlled Trial (RCTs) demonstrates that the use of ECT is effectual when treating major depression. However, it quickly resolves all mental problems. When controlled in a setting that is safe, the treatment becomes comfortable. Some researchers argue that Genuine ECT is more effective in treating acute treatment caused by depression rather than sham ECT. In addition, ECT is also more effective in comparison with standard antidepressant medication treatment (Sienaert 8). A standard score is a scores that enables us to refer to the performance of an individual pupil in relation to the whole population where the mean is 100 and the standard deviation is usually 15. A pupil in year 9 that has a date of birth of September would generally be expected to get a higher raw score than a pupil born in July, both pupils being in the same academic year. According to the development of British Constitution, Parliament gained its power over the monarchy in 1688, meaning that under UK constitutional law, it is recognised that parliament has the power to enact, revoke or alter such, and any, law as it sees fit. • 25. Flowers For Algernon By Daniel Keys To begin with, the text, Flowers for Algernon, by Daniel Keys, shows an abundant amount of examples when it comes to asking others for guidance or lack thereof. The story follows a man named Charlie, a mentally impaired 37 year old who has decided to undergo a newly tested surgery, performed by two neurosurgeons, Dr. Strauss and Dr. Nemur, that will theoretically increase his intelligence. The surgery has already been tested on other animals, like Algernon the mouse. Although the surgery initially seemed to be successful resulting in a huge peak in Charlie s intelligence, these effects were temporary. The lasting outcome of the surgery leaves Charlie in ruins; with Charlie losing his job, one of his closest friends Algernon the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Strauss said that Dr. Nemur was more interested in the Chair of Psychology at Princeton than he was in the experiment. Dr. Nemur said that Dr. Strauss was nothing but an opportunist who was trying to ride to glory on his coattails (295). This argument between the two doctors proves that Dr. Nemur especially was only invested in the surgery for his own personal gain and not for the benefit of Charlie. Because he was so eager to get his results out to the world and so paranoid that someone may discover a way to complete the surgery before him, he decided to rush into the surgery and didn t take the guidance given to him by Dr. Strauss who said that they should wait. Instead, he goes ahead with the surgery and ruins Charlie s life. REASONING? Additionally, we witness Algernon s strange behavior which is concluded as a side effect of the surgery. May 23 It happened today. Algernon bit me. I visited the lab to see him as I do occasionally, and when I took him out of his cage, he snapped at my hand. I put him back and watched him for a while. He was unusually disturbed and vicious. May 24 [Algernon] is less co operative; he refuses to run the maze any more; general motivation has decreased. Everyone is upset about what this may mean. May 25 They re all pretending that Algernon s behavior is not necessarily significant for me. Robert Borden Analysis Tommy Douglas, Pierre Trudeau, and Robert Borden Borden, Douglas, and Trudeau all remain resilient in the face of political obstacles under their leadership, kept Canada as a united nation. After their involvement in local communities, Borden, Douglas, and Trudeau reach Canada s national community. Borden was elected into politics through his partner, which soon changed his lifestyle causing him to be the prime minister. As a staunch imperialist opposing Sir Wilfred Laurier he spoke up for what was right and always brought the best for Canada. Later on being elected to the upper hand he took matters into own hand and prepared for World War 1. Tommy Douglas knew since his severe injury with his leg that he had to do something about this. • 27. Naked Egg Lab Experiment Naked Egg Lab Frances Jose Redmond High School Biology, Period 3 Mrs. Sinclair 7 November 2014 Introduction The objective of the Naked Egg Lab is to soak the egg in a solution and determine if that solution is isotonic, hypertonic, or hypotonic in relation to the egg. A solution is a mixture of two or more substances in which the molecules of the substances are evenly distributed (Miller/Levine 2000). The substances in a solution are solutes, the substance that is dissolved (Miller/Levine 2000), and solvents, the substance in which the solute dissolves (Miller/Levine 2000). In this case, the egg will be put in a salt water solution, where salt is the solute and water is the solvent. This lab is looking for three different types of solutions; isotonic, hypertonic, and hypotonic. An isotonic solution is when the concentration of two solutions is the same (Miller/Levine 2000). When a solution has a higher concentration of solutes than the solution on the other side of the membrane, it is hypertonic. Hypotonic solutions are the opposite, and have a lesser concentration of solutes than the solution on the other side of the membrane. Diffusion is the process by which molecules tend to move from an area where they are more concentrated to an area ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 28. Myths Of The Knife The knife is one of the oldest tools used by humanity so it should come as no surprise that there are almost as many myths about knives as there are types of knives. These myths are not just some old folk tales told around a camp fire but myths that are actually thought to be true in the present day time. There are myths about how to care for knives and myths about how to use them. They all have something that sticks in the mind or they would not have lasted long enough to become myths. Any buyer looking to purchase knives should know why these myths are false so that you can make wise buying decisions when purchasing your very own knife. Myth 1: Some Knives don t need to be sharpened Some manufacturers give absurd claims that their knives ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When you get injured by a knife, it means you got cut buy it in some form or another. Thinking like this would mean that knife that does not cut well is less likely to injure the user. The problem with this thinking is that dull knives require more force to actually complete the cutting action, which in turn makes the user more likely to lose control and accidentally injure themselves because the knife went somewhere it should not have gone. Myth 3: Harder Blades Stay Sharp Longer While hardness definitely is a factor in how sharp an edge a blade can hold, there is thing as a blade being too hard. The problem is that blades that are only hard also are brittle and hence prone to breaking. Brittle blades can easily chip, losing their original edge and so become jagged and dull. If your blade will last long then it needs to be resilient. Hardness alone is not enough. Myth 4: Giving a Knife as a Gift Severs Relationships This is one of the oldest and dumbest knife myths that are still around. The idea behind this thinking is that because a knife is a cutting implement, giving one to someone means that the giver is cutting the ties that bind people (them) together. Needless to say, there is no grain of truth to this myth; It is a perfect example of the kind of magical thinking that symbols can have a direct effect in the real ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 30. Marie Maynard Daly Throughout Gender and Race in the Physical Sciences, I have been struck by how rarely in STEM we shed a light on the women of color that already exist and thrive in the sciences. Often, when we discuss diversity in the sciences, we only discuss it in the frame of a problem. More specifically, we tend to focus on the problem of there not being enough of these women in the field. As a result of the lack of attention paid to pioneering women in STEM, many young people of all backgrounds are inclined to believe that there are no women of color doing great things in the field that there are no role models. With this paper, and an on campus event to be held in the spring, I hope to challenge people s assumptions about what a scientist looks like, and inspire people through a discussion of innovative women of color. • 31. Unlike Many Poets Around The World, Gerard Manley Hopkins Unlike many poets around the world, Gerard Manley Hopkins follows a very unique style of poetry. Instead of using the same old style of writing that every poet uses, Gerard created his own way to express his thoughts and feelings. Using a unique method, Gerard could write poems that became extremely popular starting in the late nineteenth century. In Gerard s The Windhover, he uses various symbols, rhetorical devices, and strategies to help support his thoughts and to help strengthen his argument that something like a bird, that one sees every day, could be totally, mind blowingly amazing if looked at the correct way. Throughout the poem, Hopkins is describing a certain animal, the windhover. The windhover is a bird with this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In either definition, a unification takes place. With this unification, a fire occurs, which is like the crucifixion of Christ, though not as grave. Along with the beautiful descriptions Hopkins illustrates this poem with is the structure of the poem itself. First, this poem is identified as a Petrarchan sonnet, where the fourteen lines are split into an octet with eight lines and a sestet with six lines. These types of sonnets are usually structured with the octet presenting some sort of problem and the sestet offering a solution to that problem. The rhyme scheme of a Petrarchan sonnet rhymes: ABBAABBA CDE CDE. However, Hopkins decided to use the pattern CDC CDC instead of CDE CDE. Starting at the beginning of the poem and looking at the end of each line, all the A s are king, wing, swing, and thing. All the B s are riding, striding, gliding, and hiding. Hopkins uses the word kingdom in the first line but then spreads the second part of the word to the second line to create king rhyming with A s scheme. If looked at closer, the B rhymes almost rhyme with the A rhymes, however, all the B sounds end in ing. This use of ing with the B rhymes help identify that the bird is in the air right now. In the sestet, the rhyme scheme is easier to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. A Seminar On Education And Poverty In September of 2013, my sister passed away, leaving our family with more questions than answers and challenges that parallel with heartbreak. As a freshman trying to find my way at the University of Georgia, it seemed that I was going backwards compared to my peers and my grieving put more of a strain on my will to continue my studies. Pursuing any actions for bettering myself or my counterparts tended to feel overwhelming. Feelings of loneliness engulfed my state of mind, but what was most unbearable was my realization that I had no idea of how I was going to overcome this. I usually have a plan of what I would like to accomplish and who I strive to become, but at this stage of life, I felt as lost as ever. As months passed, I had the opportunity to attend a seminar on education and poverty. Although I was not interested in education, I attended to gain information for a class project. Through this seminar, I found the beginning of passion that I did not know I possessed. The presenters exposed the significant fact that students often times do not finish school due to their lacking in resources to finish. These self and material doubts affect students at every level of education. While focusing on my own challenges, I lost sight of the present, daunting challenges that others, whether they be my peers or younger students, face on a daily basis. • 33. Symbolism In Raskolnikov s Nightmare He had not an instant more to lose. He pulled the axe out completely, swung it with both arms, scarcely conscious of himself, and almost without effort, almost mechanically, brought the blunt side down on her head... Then with all his strength he dealt her another and another blow with the blunt side, and on the same spot (Dostoyevsky 77). Relating the following passage to previous events in the book, a symbolic connection can be made between the murder to Raskolnikov s nightmare (55 59). Whenever Raskolnikov is out on a walk, he thinks of disturbing circumstances, only to come across something beautiful in his eyes. Horses are generally described to be both majestic and beautiful, which would apply to Raskolnikov s attraction towards them. Horses are also often used to symbolize freedom and strength, which is what he vaguely hopes for. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During a certain bar visit, Raskolnikov overhears a conversation that basically brings up murder, as the old woman served no real purpose to society and would make things better if she were to disappear. Specifically looking for an article discussing symbolism I stumbled upon Stephen King s It is the rare monster movie with too much monster written by Tahsa Robinson. Collectively, the passage discusses many elements of symbols in the film, but ultimately leads back to how the title monster makes appearance too often (Robinson). However, I disagree with this statement because the creature is presented to remind the audience that It is always there; terrorizing its prey before consumption as one would season a piece of meat before a meal. This directing style of presenting the monster in the beginning and often throughout is different from that of other movie that keep the monster hidden to build suspense and fear. Having It on screen in multiple scenes allows terror to build for the victims or, in the case of the film, for the victims to develop bravery in the face of fear. I do agree with the author s analysis on the aspects of the film and the symbols presented to the audience.
