Henry VIII sought to divorce his first wife Catherine of Aragon in order to marry Anne Boleyn, but the Pope refused to grant an annulment due to the political influence of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, Catherine's nephew. In response, Henry established himself as the Supreme Head of the Church of England through the Acts of Supremacy, separating the English church from papal authority. This began the English Reformation and established Henry as the new head of the Anglican Church in England.
