2. Equitherm Training.
Who are we?
Equitherm Training are
the ‘World Leaders’ in
the field of Equine and
Veterinary Digital
Infrared
Thermography, also
known as Thermal
Imaging. We offer
unparalleled Training
and ongoing support
to all our students.
We have trained over
900 students worldwide
including Vets from the
FEI as well as World
Class.
Our trainers are not only
experts in the field of
Equine and veterinary
Thermography but also
in the Veterinary, Equine
Sport injuries and
Performance Sciences.
We teach students how
to scan accurately using
correct environmental
protocols,
standardisation of the
subject and report
standardisation with
comparison to bilateral
areas at the heart of our
analysis.
We offer students the
opportunity to train at our
Training Centre in the UK
and also the option to train
online for those with
restricted ability to attend
our live training courses.
All our student technicians
go through a thorough
process of assessment
upon finishing their training.
This includes a written
exam, assignments, case
studies submission and
practical examination.
On completion and
successful assessment our
students will receive
Certification as Equitherm
Equine Thermography
Technicians and will be
able to go out and
practise as professionals.
3. What is Thermography?
A pictorial
representation of
the surface
temperature of an
object as taken by
an infrared
camera.
A Thermogram
represents the
measured heat
emitted from the
skin surface.
The Skin of an
animal is
approximately 5
degrees cooler
than core body
temperature.
Variations in skin
temperature result
in tissue perfusion
and blood flow in
superficial veins
Circulatory pattern &
relative blood flow
dictate the thermal
pattern
The Basis For
Thermographic
Interpretation
Thermographic
images measure
only skin surface
temperature (up to
5mm in depth) – Also
reflects alteration of
the circulation in
deeper tissues so
detects areas of
inflammation.

4. Thermography Defined
Splint and navicular
pathology
Active Splint Pathology Superficial Digital Flexor
Tendon Tear.

Inflamed tissue has
increased circulation
and heat, therefore
characteristically
shows up as a
“hot spot”
5. Thermography Defined
Cold Spots & Patterns
In the case of Oedema
(abnormal
accumulation of fluid) or
Infarction (tissue death
caused by obstruction of
the tissues blood supply
resulting in lack of oxygen)
Nerve Damage
The tissues reduces the
circulation resulting in
“COLD SPOTS”
Oedema /Nerve damage

6. Symmetry in anatomic structures.
Pattern Analysis
The temperature of a region is reflected as a
certain colour pattern, this pattern is then
compared to the same region on the opposite
side of the body for evaluation.
What does thermography
determine?

7. Multiple thermographic images of a suspect area should be taken
from at least two views of 90° degrees apart before an area is
considered abnormal
What does Thermography
determine ?
SDFT Tear identified from multiple angles

8. Thermography has a wide range of
clinical applications
Evaluating the tendons and
the ligaments of the distal
limbs are the most common
uses with great potential for
preventative applications.

9. Careers and training with
Equitherm
Technicians Certificate
This Certificated Technicians training
programme is designed to provide the
appropriate training and certification
to prospective Students wishing to
achieve employment in the Equine
Rehabilitation and Performance sector
as a Equine & Veterinary Infrared
Thermographer.
This course will give the student
the opportunity to develop the
core skills and an advanced
understanding of Infrared
Thermography (also known as
Thermal imaging) for the equine.
Additionally it will allow the
student to understand, build a
specific focus on the following
areas:
Student Area of focus
Thermoregulation of the equine &
successful Equine Imaging.
Factors that determine skin
temperature, Inflammation, the
Physiology of blood flow.
Clinical use and the mechanics by
which the horse exchanges heat.
Injuries in the equine during exercise,
training and performance and what
types of injuries to look for in horses
doing different disciplines.
Accidental injuries in different sports.
The use of thermography as a
monitoring tool for the equine
10. Student Area Of Focus
This course aims to provide students
with the ability to:
To study the principles and practise of Equine
and Veterinary Infrared Thermography.
To understand the process and physics of
Infrared and heat relating to the subject &
thermography application.
Understand the environmental factors that
can affect scanning results. Best practise to
ensure correct protocols are adhered to at all
times.
Understand how to scan systematically,
standardise scanning techniques and other
factors.
How to transfer scan images to the reporting
software and manipulate the level and span
to highlight areas of interest.
How to produce a report for clients using
comparative analysis and to critically
articulate ones findings to ensure a
professional, articulate and accurate report
based on standards and protocol.
Exercise and the effects of
exercise on physiology
Recovery and monitoring horses
during rehabilitation/
Pathophysiology
Correct scanning
Correct report procedures
Environmental factors
Physics of Infrared
Applications of thermography in
the equine

Careers and Training
11. Training with the best.
New Career
Whether you are
looking to start
working in the
Equestrian Industry or
would like to develop
your career further,
here you will find
options for training in
the modality of
Equine & Veterinary
Thermography.
Training in this field
will bring many
rewards such as
working within an
industry that is
dynamic and fast
paced, working
hours to suit yourself
and doing a job that
you are passionate
about.
A career you are
passionate about.
Firstly becoming an
Equine Infrared
Thermographer takes
more than just
picking up an
infrared camera and
taking a picture.
Like any diagnostic or
monitoring tool within
the veterinary
industry it takes
practical skill and an
understanding of the
theory behind the
application. It also
means an
understanding of
standardisation and
protocol is necessary
to achieve reliable
and consistent results
always
12. Equine Thermography
Technicians Programme
All our study options for the Equine Thermography
Technicians Certificate are three months in duration and
start with the following initial training options:

Accreditation
Technicians Certification.
The Equitherm Technicians
programme is a three month
programme from start to finish
with the following as part of the
accrediting process.

Accredited Technicians Certification.
Once you have gained your ‘Technicians Certificate’
with Equitherm, it is important to maintain the highest
standards in your work as an Equine Thermographer.
To show you are maintaining those standards Equitherm
offer an Accredited Thermographer status.
To achieve this status you can take an annual
assessment for the nominal fee of £125, starting at the
beginning of your second year.
The re-assessment requires you to submit 2 recent case
studies and take an online exam. These will be assessed
by our expert trainers and once passed you will gain
Accredited Thermography status.
The Accredited Thermographer assessment is not
mandatory because your initial technicians certificate
will always remain valid but we highly recommend you
take the annual assessment so that you can
demonstrate you are maintaining the highest standards
in your work.
