How could someone sort through all these recordings to find the elephant voices

• In 1888, the Census Bureau held a contest: using samples of population
statistics from St. Louis, it asked challengers to invent new ways of
processing data. To general amazement, a twenty-eight-year-old former
census employee won easily.
• This son of a German immigrant grew up in Buffalo, tinkering with
machines. He especially liked trains—he had already pioneered an
“electro air brake” for them—and it was this passion that led to his idea for
tabulation. He knew, from his census work, that it took too long for an

• On the eve of Second General Elections in 1957, the Election Commission
received an interesting suggestion to tackle impersonation – instead of
marking the left forefinger of a voter with indelible ink, he should undergo a
procedure compulsorily before receiving any ballot paper.
• The reasoning was that it would remain prominent for well over a week and
a voter would not be able to personate another voter for that period. The
suggestion came following criticism that the mark made on a voter's finger
by indelible ink is not, in fact, indelible and is capable of being removed.
