You’ve already perfected your LinkedIn profile, why bother doing anything else with social media? No one cares what you had for lunch or how many miles you jogged this morning.
… you are revealing things about yourself that can expand your network on a variety of social media channels. What types of content am I talking about?
This list is meant to spark some ideas for content you can share via LinkedIn, Twitter, Pinterest, or any number of social networks. To make connections that open doors, I suggest three guidelines for sharing content.
You need to LISTEN Actively, RESEARCH Expertly and PUBLISH Thoughtfully . Let’s look at examples of each…
… starting with listening actively . Here are some quick ways to do that with LinkedIn that you may not have tried before. For instance…
… Your HOME page on LinkedIn has an UPDATES section that lets you see what your connections are sharing, if they’ve changed companies, if they’ve connected with new people, etc., which gives you opportunities to reach out with a quick reply or a simple congratulations.
Then there’s LinkedIn’s Advanced Search. Why “listen” with advanced search? Because once you’ve fine-tuned your selection criteria…
… you can SAVE that search and have LinkedIn automatically email you results weekly or monthly. That can keep you abreast of who’s new to an industry, a company, a particular job title, and so on. Speaking of Search…
… try searching for GROUPS using keywords relevant to your favorite industry. Join as many as you can, not just for the connections…
… but also so that when you’re doing an advanced search, your RESULTS can include or exclude people in groups you belong to. Of course LinkedIn isn’t the only social network for active listening…
There’s also Twitter. Natural, easy and yet underused for business networking. Don’t underestimate its value, because with Twitter you can LISTEN ACTIVELY for the answer to a very important question.
This isn’t a Twitter course, but I do want to quickly share some tips, starting with the seemingly obvious…
… you’re more likely to attract followers if you complete your twitter profile page and start tweeting some CRAVABLE stuff that reflects who you are. THEN you can try these tactics…
Getting people to follow you: Start following people – many do follow back if you profile and tweets look interesting Email your close contacts Include as part of your email signature (“follow me on Twitter”) Add your twitter name to your LinkedIn profile and notify your LinkedIn contacts
Getting people to follow you: Add yourself to Twitter Listing sites like Twellow [?] Tweet consistently on your topics and industries of professional interest (make sure these keywords are in your bio); add value to conversations When people start following you, follow back and send them a personal DM thanking them; ask who else you should follow introduce your followers to other people. Let others know about your followers, and they will do the same for you. (mention #FF follow Friday tradition?) The LISTENING truly happens when you get people to follow you. How?

RESEARCH EXPERTLY. You can do this by tying school projects to specific companies, industries, and business leaders.
Data collection/analysis · Seek expert input · Request data sources · Ask for advice on data analysis · Share findings
Sharing your insights. You can use a number of publishing media…
Regardless of the format in which you publish, you’ll get the most mileage from it if you share your content on multiple social media networks. For instance, you can tweet a link to your blog post, or you can embed your video on your LinkedIn profile. But that’s just striking the match…
Start with one content match at a time . . . .
Make your “content campfire” an inviting, approachable destination. Fuel the flame by being warm and welcoming to all opinions, and you’ll be amazed at the connections you can make.
