We do not have a radical new invention, which triggered Web 2.0. Many technologies simply have evolved to an innovation in user communication. Web 2.0 is not just another buzz. The numbers are simply mindblowing. Myspace and Facebook are growing by the population of Austria every 10 days. And every minute, we are uploading 20 hours of video material to Youtube. This would be an equivalent for the cinema industry to release more than 100.000 full-length movies every week.
In traditional media consumers were recipients, in social media they are producers. This has generated a shift from institutional control to management by users. Conventional Media is first filtered and then published. The social web first entails publishing and then filtering. Since inumberable users are generating vast amounts of content every second of the day, more bandwidth is desperately needed, not only for downloading, but also for uploading content.
Today we have about 1,6 billion Internet users. What are they doing? Ok, they write e-mails, they surf the web, they watch videos. But most of them are having one or more additional identities. We estimate, that we have already 10 billion identities in web 2.0 platforms. Best networked users are in the U.S., with an average of 10 identities per user. We estimate, that in 2014 we'll have 100 billion identities.
Dell is following a crowdsourcing strategy with their customers.
@DellOutlet has been one of the biggest success stories amongst big companies using social media. @DellOutlet is a Twitter account owned by Dell that tweets out major discounts for Dell computers and products. All of the deals on @DellOutlet are Twitter-exclusive. It has gained q 620,000 followers and sold a lot of computers - at the end of last year, they surpassed $1 million in revenue, after about a year. As of end of May 2009, they have pushed sales from Dell Outlet to over $2 million.
Crowdsourcing works perfectly for designing T-shirts. Simply let users upload designs and let the comunity vote and pre-order.
