Aspirational rant Tongue in cheek
The idea that geeks should rule us all started in the pub Power of the pub Politics, religion, unification of physics
The boss: Wasn't in touch with project Wanted to hurt other parts of the company
Books dealing with bad bosses We have names like: PHB Corporate Psychopath Bad bosses seem to be an epidemic
So why should the geeks inherit the earth? No one else is stepping into the void Talked to other geeks Because bad things happen when good people do nothing
Why is it that geeks would make better leaders? Teamicidal behaviours like: Excessive bureaucracy Destroying co-operation
If bosses are bad individually then collect them together in an organisation Yet many of us work for these orgs
Sadly there some things we can;t do as small organisaitions Gas or electricity supply
So if we're all in this together: We need to change our perception of ourselves We need to let the geeks help
Why geeks? Hate dealing with politics Refreshing openness Literal by nature
Geeks are used to dealing with non-geeks We love saving ourselves and others labour Computing is about collaborating with other people
Geeks can deal with the unknown In fact best determinant of programming aptitude is the ability to quantify and accept the unknown
We deal with failure at multiple levels We know humans are fallible We laud startups even though they fail in large numbers We like recovery from failure
Modern geeks are innately holistic The systems we depend on are layered There are ecosystems and communities which we bridge and participate in
We even have a well trodden leadership model! We understand how to get results without pissing people off.
Some no-geeks or even uber-geeks with nasty streaks run successful companies. But these are exceptions that merely prove the rule
The rise of the internet has allowed geeks to collaborate more regularly We've anointed benevolent dictators and had good things come out of them We've even founded orgs like the Apache Software Foundation run by and for geeks
Time to evangelise the geek Call out the bad behaviour Find and support your geeks for leadership roles
You too can be a geek ruler Collaborate Be open Don't try to shaft others
Geek rule is good for you and good for others Trapped 40+ hours per week together, might as well be pleasant You won't find a better class of person
