Is this old expression in the Bible? Can Christians say that this expression is true? Moses told Joshua to be strong and courageous. Jesus told us to fear not. Paul faced persecution.
2. God Tells Leaders to be Courageous
Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of
them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave
you nor forsake you.”
Then Moses summoned Joshua and said to him in the presence of
all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you must go with this
people into the land that the LORD swore to their ancestors to give
them, and you must divide it among them as their
inheritance. The LORD himself goes before you and will be with
you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.
Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”
Deuteronomy 31:6-8
3. The Prophets were Not Cowards
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed,
for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you;
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Isaiah 41:10
4. Brave Enough to Pay the Price
And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon, Barak,
Samson and Jephthah, about David and Samuel and the prophets, who
through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was
promised; who shut the mouths of lions, quenched the fury of the flames, and
escaped the edge of the sword; whose weakness was turned to strength; and
who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies. Women received
back their dead, raised to life again. There were others who were tortured,
refusing to be released so that they might gain an even better
resurrection. Some faced jeers and flogging, and even chains and
imprisonment. They were put to death by stoning; they were sawed in two;
they were killed by the sword. They went about in sheepskins and
goatskins, destitute, persecuted and mistreated— the world was not worthy of
them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, living in caves and in holes in
the ground.
Hebrews 11:32-38
5. Courage: Evidence You’ve Been With Jesus
But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
Matthew 14:27
When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were
unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that
these men had been with Jesus.
Acts 4:13
6. An Example and Reason of Paul’s Courage
Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has
actually served to advance the gospel. As a result, it has become clear throughout
the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ. And
because of my chains, most of the brothers and sisters have become confident in
the Lord and dare all the more to proclaim the gospel without fear.
. . .
I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient
courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or
by death.
. . .
Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.
Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know
that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the
gospel without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign
to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved—and that by God.
Philippians 1:12-28
7. Paul’s Command
Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous;
be strong.
Do everything in love.
I Corinthians 16:13, 14
8. How to be Brave?
My son, do not let wisdom and understanding out of your sight,
preserve sound judgment and discretion;
they will be life for you, an ornament to grace your neck.
Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble.
When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your
sleep will be sweet.
Have no fear of sudden disaster or of the ruin that overtakes the
wicked,
for the LORD will be at your side and will keep your foot from being
snared.
Proverbs 3:21-26
9. “God Hates a Coward”
No, verbatim, it isn’t in the Bible.
But the Bible does say that cowards will go to hell!
But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers,
the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the
idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake
of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”
Revelation 21:8
