X is a sitcom that aired in the early 2000s. It was originally
named ‘Teenage Wasteland’ and then later ‘The Kids Are
Alright’ but both names were references to songs by The
Who, so there was a legal issue preventing the use.

Graham Vivian Sutherland was a well respected English artist whose surreal
works with watercolours and oils established him as a leading modern artist.
Sutherland was commissioned to paint several portraits during the 1950s, but
perhaps the most famous was that of X. Sutherland spent months working from
the preliminary materials to create the final work on a large square canvas at his
studio. He didn’t give X any sneak peeks, as he wanted to capture who the real X
as he was, not merely in the way he wished to be portrayed. But when it was
unveiled, X and his family hated it.
The portrait should have hung in the House of Parliament after X’s death, but
when he finally accepted it it was taken to Chartwell. It was never displayed there
and never seen again.
Sonia Purnell wrote the biography of X’s wife and the hence fate of the portrait
was revealed in 2015. X’s wife had told her loyal secretary at Chartwell “we’ve got
to get rid of it”. Her secretary then with the help of her brother, burned the portrait
in a secret bonfire in the dead of the night, and the portrait became one of the

Jay-Z has been known for thinking outside of the box when it comes to his music videos. For his single
“Moonlight” from the album 4:44 he did a reimagining of X.The video featured an all star cast (Issa Rae,

African-Americans re-enacting a specific scene from an episode of X, saying the exact same lines as the
