Global Innovation Roundtable
Platforms for collaboration and networking can have a
significant impact on driving innovation in the knowledge
economy.
To foster collaborations on innovation, exchange ideas and
to create a platform for knowledge sharing and collective
solution building, the National Innovation Council has
been hosting Global Roundtables on Innovation.
The Roundtables bring together heads of innovation policy
from Governments across the world, as well as innovation
experts, to share learnings and outline potential
collaborations.

GIR 2011
The First Global Innovation Roundtable (GIR) was hosted in
New Delhi on 14th-15th November 2011, in collaboration
with the World Bank Institute
The key objective was to explore the need for broad-basing
innovations to meet key development challenges, share
cross-country experiences and develop a paradigm for
inclusive innovation to address the needs of the Bottom of
the Economic Pyramid (BoEP).
The countries represented included the U.K., the United
States of America, Australia, France, Canada, Mexico, Israel,
Sweden, Netherlands, Brazil, Germany, Japan, South Africa,
and EU.

GIR 2011: Discussions
The Sessions over two days included: 'Global Innovation Eco
systems,' 'Dreaming It and Doing It,' 'Learning from Global Good
Practices,‘ 'Developing an Innovation Eco system,’ 'Taking
Innovations to Scale,' 'Innovation and Intellectual Property,' and
'Global Collaboration on Innovation’.
On the second day the Prime Minister of India released NInC’s
First Annual Report to the People detailing the Council’s activities
in the past year
The discussions in GIR outlined the need for a long-term approach
to fostering innovation and the need for public sector, private
enterprises, social sector and venture capital industry to partner
and support programmes and policies that enhance the national
innovation capacity.

GIR 2011: Discussions
The GIR also underlined that universities, industry and
research institutes need to play a multi-faceted role in
cultivating innovation by creating public knowledge
exchange platforms, promoting problem solving skills,
and fuelling innovative research.
The Roundtable concluded with various global
participants proposing further collaboration and
knowledge exchange and convening a Second Global
Innovation Roundtable in a year.

GIR 2012
As a follow up effort, NInC hosted the second Global Innovation
Roundtable (GIR) on 1st
and 2nd November 2012 in New Delhi, India.
The Roundtable saw participation from heads of Innovation policy from
20 Governments across the world and leading global Innovation experts
and aimed to create a global platform for sharing experiences, best
practices and enabling collaborations
The key objective of the Roundtable was once again to develop a
paradigm for inclusive innovation and share experiences among
stakeholders
The Roundtable also saw the presentation of the National Innovation
Council’s annual ‘Report to the People’ 2012 to the Hon’ble President of
India Shri Pranab Mukherjee at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

GIR 2012: Discussions
Discussions in the Global Innovation Roundtable 2012 focused on
a range of issues related to nurturing the innovation eco system
and outlining deeper collaboration on innovation among nations.
The work of the National Innovation Council in realising the
‘Decade of Innovation’ agenda of the Government was also
shared with the participants.
The Council’s commitment to inclusive development through its
initiatives such as the India Inclusive Innovation Fund to finance
enterprises at the Bottom of the economic pyramid; seeding
innovation in regional SME clusters; efforts in nurturing
innovation in the education system; and the Open Government
Platform for placing Government data in the public domain were
also highlighted

The Roundtable focused on innovations related to meeting the
needs of inclusion, access and equity; and leveraging new tools and
technology in the 21st
Century to scale and sustain innovative
solutions.
In this context, the sessions covered topics such as ‘Crowdsourcing
Innovations’; ‘Financing Inclusive Innovation’; ‘Learning from Global
Good Practices’; ‘Towards an Innovation Eco system’; ‘Innovations
for the Bottom of the Economic Pyramid’; ‘Enhancing Productivity
through Innovation in Clusters’; ‘Industry-Academia Interface for
Driving Innovation’; ‘IPR and Innovation’; and ‘Innovations in
Government’.
The Roundtable was followed by a Global Twitter Press Conference
to reach out to Indian and international media.

GIR 2012: Collaborations
The following areas were outlined for collaboration:
Open Government: The Platform already developed
by India and the US for this could be adopted by
other countries, and India could help implement.
Crowdsourcing Innovation Platform: The Open Source
Drug Discovery Platform developed by India for
tuberculosis drug discovery could be used as a
template for crowdsourcing in new areas of drug
discovery.
10. Adviser to the Prime Minister on Public Information Infrastructure and Innovations
GIR 2012: Collaborations
The following areas were outlined for collaboration:
Innovation for Education: Existing educational
content could be aggregated, filtered and indexed,
under the guidance of global domain experts and
made available on mobile devices like “Aakash”
Innovation for Health: Health content could also be
aggregated and made available, just like educational
content. Further, India’s initiative for an Open Source
Electronic health records system and tele-medicine
could be adopted by other countries.
GIR 2013 is now being planned for November 2013
