The island was famous for its copper and for its excellent wood (cypress in particular) which
was exported to Tire, on the Phoenician coast, for the construction of ships. (Eze 27: 2, 6.)

There is a long-standing
historical conflict between
Greece and Turkey, due to the
endless struggles to dominate
the many islands of the Aegean
Sea, including Cyprus.
The great power of the Ottoman
Empire managed to break
the Hellenic hold
The Government of Cyprus only controls two-thirds of the island.
The remaining third (the north of the island) was occupied by
Turkey in 1974, establishing the Turkish Republic of N. Cyprus

Annita Demetriou
Meeting with priests, men and women religious, deacons,
catechists, associations and ecclesial movements of Cyprus
in the Maronite Cathedral of Our Lady of Graces, Nicosia
“The cedars of Lebanon are cited numerous times in
Scripture as models of beauty and greatness. But even a
great cedar springs up from the roots and grows slowly."
You are these roots, transplanted in Cyprus to spread
the fragrance and beauty of the Gospel. Thanks!"
“Cyprus - an island caressed by the waves of the sea, but above all a
history that is a crossroads of peoples and a mosaic of encounters. This is
also the Church: catholic, that is to say, universal, an open space in which
all are welcomed and reached by God's mercy and his invitation to love "
“The Catholic Church is a common home, it is the place of relationships, it is the
co-existence of diversity…. And who makes the unit? The Holy Spirit. And who
makes the diversity? The Holy Spirit. Understand this whoever can”
“It is no use being impulsive, it is no use being aggressive, nostalgic or
complaining, it is better to continue reading the signs of the times and
also the signs of the crisis. - It is necessary to start over and announce
the Gospel with patience, to take the Beatitudes in hand, especially
to announce them to the new generations ”.
"The Church does not want to standardize, but to integrate all
cultures, and all people's psychologies, with maternal
patience, because the Church is mother."
“Bernabas took Paul with him and presented him to the community
…… This is an attitude of friendship, an attitude of sharing life. "Taking
with oneself", "taking on oneself" means taking charge of the other's
story, taking time to get to know them without labeling them "
“Barnabas had above all the patience to
accompany, he lets him grow, accompanying "
“This is the fraternity of the Church: you can discuss visions, sensitivities, different ideas,
and in some cases say things frankly. This is helpful, when not saying them in secret with a
criticism that does no good to anyone. Discussion is an opportunity for growth and change.
But let us always remember that we don’t discuss in order to wage war, or to impose oneself,
but to express and live the vitality of the Spirit, which is love and communion ”.
“Here in Cyprus there are many spiritual and ecclesial sensibilities,
various histories of provenance, rites and different traditions;
but we should not feel diversity as a threat to our identity "
Ceremonia de bienvenida en el Palacio
Presidencial de Nicosia
Welcome ceremony at the Presidential Palace of Nicosia
Conversation and exchange of gifts
with President Nikos Anastasiadis
Meeting with the authorities, civil society and
the Diplomatic Corps in the “Ceremonial Hall”
of the Presidential Palace of Nicosia
“Cyprus, a land whose limit
is the sea; a place that represents
the eastern gate of Europe and
the western gate of the Middle East ”.
"We have just honored the
first President of this Republic,
Archbishop Makarios, and by
making this gesture I have
wished to honor all the
citizens of Cyprus."
“The Beatitudes, dear friends, are the perennial constitution
of Christianity. Living them, makes the Gospel always young
and enriches the hope of society. The Beatitudes are the
compass that guides, in all latitudes, the routes that
Christians take on the journey of life ”.
“Cyprus shines with beauty over its land, which
should be preserved and protected with appropriate
environmental policies in relation to its neighbours.
This Beauty is also reflected in architecture,
and in art, particularly in sacred art "
I am also thinking of
various Catholic entities
that would benefit from
timely institutional
recognition, so that the
contribution they make
to society through their
activities, particularly
educational and
charitable, is adequately
defined from a legal
point of view.
“The commitment to promote the recovery of society,
particularly through a determined fight against corruption
and plagues that threaten the dignity of the person;
I am referring, for example, to human trafficking "
commitment to sincere debate that puts the
demands of the population first, and to an
increasingly active involvement of the
international community, to the safeguarding of
religious and cultural heritage ... "
- Religious Track of the Cyprus Peace Project, promote by the Swedish Embassy
“We need dialogue, without which suspicion and resentment grow ...-
Cyprus, a geographical, historical, cultural and religious crossroads,
is in a position to launch an peace process. Let it be an open work
in which peace is built in the middle of the Mediterranean "
“For me it is exciting to walk in the footsteps of the
great first missionaries, in particular of the saints Paul,
Barnabas and Marcos…."They crossed the whole island
until they reached Paphos" (Acts 13: 6). For me it is a
source of joy to go through the history and soul of this
land during these days, hoping that your desire for
unity and their message of beauty continue to guide
your path. O Theós na evloghí tin Kípro!
[May God bless Cyprus!] "
FRIDAY 3 DEC 2021 Courtesy visit to his Beatitude
Chrysostom II, Orthodox Archbishop of Cyprus in Nicosia
"We trust in this Mother Church, who brings us all together and who, with patience,
tenderness and courage, leads us forward on the path of the Lord"
“The Holy Spirit invites us not to resign ourselves to the divisions of the past and to
cultivate together the field of the Kingdom, with patience, assiduity and in a concrete
way. Because if we put aside abstract theories and work together side by side - for
example, in charity, in education and in the promotion of human dignity - we will
rediscover brotherhood and communion will mature by itself, to the glory of God "
"Let us not allow traditions - in the plural and with a lowercase" t "- to prevail over
Tradition —in the singular and with a capital “t”. Barnabas exhorts us to practise this,
and to leave aside even good things, if they threaten the fullness of communion,
the primacy of charity and the need for unity "
Meeting with the Holy Synodin the Orthodox Cathedral of
Nicosia“You have to follow the path of personal encounter, pay
attention to people's questions, to their existential needs. To be
children of consolation, before saying anything, it is necessary to
listen, allow oneself to be questioned, discover the other, share:
because the Gospel is transmitted through communion "
“May we console each other with the very
consolation that we receive from God" (cf. 2 Cor 1,3-5)
"In the church of “Our Lady of the Golden City”, the temple,
dedicated to the Panaghia Chrysopolitissa, is currently a
place of worship for several Christian confessions
-within the complex
a column is
preserved where,
according to
tradition, Saint Paul
suffered thirty-nine
lashes for having
announced the
faith in Paphos"
“Centuries of division and distancing that have led to assimilate, even
involuntarily, too many hostile prejudices regarding others. These
preconceptions were often based on deficient and distorted information,
promoted aggressively by a controversial attitude. All this has twarted
the way of God, which is oriented towards harmony and unity "”
“Let us ask for unity through the intercession of the saints. Leontios Machairas, a
15th century chronicler, defined Cyprus as the "Holy Island" due to the number of
martyrs and saints that this land has known throughout the centuries;
along with Barnabas, Paulo and Mark, Epifanio, Barbara, Espiridón,
there are many others, innumerable multitudes of saints who, united
in the onle heavenly Church - the Mother Church - they urge us to sail
together towards the port for which we are all yearning”.
Holy Mass
at the GSP
Stadium in
Nicosia
Homily - The first step:- “go to Jesus for healing.
Jesus is the doctor. Only He is the true light that illuminates
every man (cf. Jn 1,9), gives us light, warmth and love
in abundance. Only He frees the heart from evil ”.
The second step is to support the sufferings together.
“Healing comes when we carry wounds together, when we face
problems together, when we listen to each other and we talk
to each other. And this is the grace of living in community, to
understand the value of being together, of being a community "
And the third step is
to announce the Gospel with
joy -"The joy of the Gospel,
which is unstoppable,
"fills the hearts and entire
lives of those who meet Jesus
"...Brothers and sisters,
enlightened Christians are
needed, but above all
luminous ones, who tenderly
touch the blindness of the
brothers, who with gestures
and words of comfort shine
like lights of hope in the dark;
Christians who sow shoots of
the Gospel in the arid fields
of daily life, that bring
caresses to the lonely, the
suffering and the poor"
I thank Patriarchs Pizzaballa
and Béchara Raï,as well as
Mrs. Elisabeth of Caritas.
ECUMENICAL PRAYER
WITH MIGRANTS
- Parish Church of the Holy Cross,
Nicosia - Friday, Dec 3. from 2021
"I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have revealed all this
to the little ones and have hidden it from the wise and cunning" (Mt 11:25).
God reveals his Kingdom to the little ones: Kingdom of love, justice and peace ”.
"You are no longer strangers or strangers, but fellow citizens of the saints and family of
God" (Eph 2:19. ”This is the prophecy of the Church, a community that embodies - with all
human limits - the dream of God. We are not numbers, we are not individuals to be
cataloged: We are “brothers”, “friends”, “believers” and “neighbors” of one another ”.
"You are no longer strangers,
but fellow citizens of the saints and
family of God" (Eph 2:19. ”This is the
prophecy of the Church, a community
that embodies – within all human limits
- the dream of God. We are not
numbers, we are not individuals
to be cataloged: We are "brothers",
"friends", "believers" and
"neighbors" of one another ".
our journey towards full unity can advance to the extent
that we all have our gaze fixed on Jesus, on Him, which
is "our peace", which is the “corner stone"
God also calls us not to resign ourselves
to living in a divided world, nor to
resign ourselves to divided Christian
communities, but to walk in history,
attracted by the dream of God, of a
humanity without walls of separation,
free from enmity, no longer as outsiders
but as fellow citizens
- 1st is the effective recognition of the dignity of each human person
- the 2nd condition is the openness and trust in God, Father of all,
and this is the "fermentation" that we are called to be as believers "
"We regret when we read the stories of the concentration camps of the last
century, those of the Nazis, those of Stalin, we regret when we see that and
we say:" But how could that have happened? " Brothers and sisters: it is
happening today, on the nearby shores. Places of slavery. I have seen some
recorded testimonies of that: places of torture, of the sale of people ”.
“It is a present day war. There is the suffering of brothers and sisters that
we cannot silence; of those who have given everything they had to get on
a boat, at night without knowing if they would ever arrive. And later,
so many of them are rejected and end up in concentration camps,
truly places of confinement, torture and slavery ”.
"But the barbed wires…. are put up to prevent the
refugee from entering, the one who comes to ask for
freedom, bread, help, brotherhood, joy, who is
fleeing from hatred and is faced with hatred"

Pope Francis in Cyprus

  • 1.
  • 2. The island was famous for its copper and for its excellent wood (cypress in particular) which was exported to Tire, on the Phoenician coast, for the construction of ships. (Eze 27: 2, 6.)
  • 3.
  • 4. Greek Orthodox: 78 % Muslim: 18 % Others: 4 % Monastery of Kikkos in Pedoulas
  • 5. There is a long-standing historical conflict between Greece and Turkey, due to the endless struggles to dominate the many islands of the Aegean Sea, including Cyprus. The great power of the Ottoman Empire managed to break the Hellenic hold
  • 6. The Government of Cyprus only controls two-thirds of the island. The remaining third (the north of the island) was occupied by Turkey in 1974, establishing the Turkish Republic of N. Cyprus
  • 7. APOSTOLIC JOURNEY OF POPE FRANCIS TO CYPRUS 2 – 6 Dic 2021 Thursday, 2 December 2021 ROME - LARNACA - NICOSIA 11:00 - Departure by airplane from Rome/Fiumicino International Airport for Larnaca Greeting to journalists on the flight to Cyprus 15:00 - Arrival at Larnaca International Airport 15:00 - OFFICIAL WELCOME at Larnaca International Airport 16:00 - MEETING WITH PRIESTS, CONSACRATED PERSONS, DEACONS, CATECHISTS, ECCLESIAL ASSOCIATIONS AND MOVEMENTS OF CYPRUS at the Maronite Cathedral of Our Lady of Grace in Nicosia 17:15 - WELCOME CEREMONY at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia 17:30 - COURTESY VISIT TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC in the private office at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia 18:00 - MEETING WITH AUTHORITIES, CIVIL SOCIETY AND THE DIPLOMATIC CORPS in the “Ceremonial Hall” of the Presidential Palace in Nicosia Friday, 3 December 2021 NICOSIA 8:30 - COURTESY VISIT TO HIS BEATITUDE CHRYSOSTOMOS II, ORTHODOX ARCHBISHOP OF CYPRUS at the Orthodox Archbishopric of Cyprus in Nicosia 9:00 - MEETING WITH THE HOLY SYNOD at the Orthodox Cathedral in Nicosia 10:00 - HOLY MASS at the “GSP Stadium” in Nicosia 16:00 - ECUMENICAL PRAYER WITH MIGRANTS at the Parish Church of the Holy Cross in Nicosia
  • 8. He was met by the President of Parliament, Annita Demetriou
  • 9.
  • 10. Meeting with priests, men and women religious, deacons, catechists, associations and ecclesial movements of Cyprus in the Maronite Cathedral of Our Lady of Graces, Nicosia
  • 11. “The cedars of Lebanon are cited numerous times in Scripture as models of beauty and greatness. But even a great cedar springs up from the roots and grows slowly."
  • 12. You are these roots, transplanted in Cyprus to spread the fragrance and beauty of the Gospel. Thanks!"
  • 13. “Cyprus - an island caressed by the waves of the sea, but above all a history that is a crossroads of peoples and a mosaic of encounters. This is also the Church: catholic, that is to say, universal, an open space in which all are welcomed and reached by God's mercy and his invitation to love "
  • 14. “The Catholic Church is a common home, it is the place of relationships, it is the co-existence of diversity…. And who makes the unit? The Holy Spirit. And who makes the diversity? The Holy Spirit. Understand this whoever can”
  • 15. “It is no use being impulsive, it is no use being aggressive, nostalgic or complaining, it is better to continue reading the signs of the times and also the signs of the crisis. - It is necessary to start over and announce the Gospel with patience, to take the Beatitudes in hand, especially to announce them to the new generations ”.
  • 16. "The Church does not want to standardize, but to integrate all cultures, and all people's psychologies, with maternal patience, because the Church is mother."
  • 17. “Bernabas took Paul with him and presented him to the community …… This is an attitude of friendship, an attitude of sharing life. "Taking with oneself", "taking on oneself" means taking charge of the other's story, taking time to get to know them without labeling them "
  • 18. “Barnabas had above all the patience to accompany, he lets him grow, accompanying "
  • 19. “This is the fraternity of the Church: you can discuss visions, sensitivities, different ideas, and in some cases say things frankly. This is helpful, when not saying them in secret with a criticism that does no good to anyone. Discussion is an opportunity for growth and change. But let us always remember that we don’t discuss in order to wage war, or to impose oneself, but to express and live the vitality of the Spirit, which is love and communion ”.
  • 20. “Here in Cyprus there are many spiritual and ecclesial sensibilities, various histories of provenance, rites and different traditions; but we should not feel diversity as a threat to our identity "
  • 21. Ceremonia de bienvenida en el Palacio Presidencial de Nicosia Welcome ceremony at the Presidential Palace of Nicosia
  • 22. Conversation and exchange of gifts with President Nikos Anastasiadis
  • 23. Meeting with the authorities, civil society and the Diplomatic Corps in the “Ceremonial Hall” of the Presidential Palace of Nicosia
  • 24. “Cyprus, a land whose limit is the sea; a place that represents the eastern gate of Europe and the western gate of the Middle East ”.

  • 36. "Let us not allow traditions - in the plural and with a lowercase" t "- to prevail over Tradition —in the singular and with a capital “t”. All this has twarted the way of God, which is oriented towards harmony and unity "”
  • 42. “Let us ask for unity through the intercession of the saints. Leontios Machairas, a 15th century chronicler, defined Cyprus as the "Holy Island" due to the number of martyrs and saints that this land has known throughout the centuries; along with Barnabas, Paulo and Mark, Epifanio, Barbara, Espiridón, there are many others, innumerable multitudes of saints who, united in the onle heavenly Church - the Mother Church - they urge us to sail together towards the port for which we are all yearning”.

And the third step is to announce the Gospel with joy -"The joy of the Gospel, which is unstoppable, "fills the hearts and entire lives of those who meet Jesus "...Brothers and sisters, enlightened Christians are needed, but above all luminous ones, who tenderly touch the blindness of the brothers, who with gestures and words of comfort shine like lights of hope in the dark; Christians who sow shoots of the Gospel in the arid fields of daily life, that bring caresses to the lonely, the suffering and the poor"

" Brothers and sisters: it is happening today, on the nearby shores. Places of slavery. I have seen some recorded testimonies of that: places of torture, of the sale of people ”.
  • 55. “It is a present day war. There is the suffering of brothers and sisters that we cannot silence; of those who have given everything they had to get on a boat, at night without knowing if they would ever arrive.
